Frogs play an important role in ecosystems by controlling insect populations, serving as a food source, and facilitating nutrient cycling between aquatic and terrestrial environments. However, many frog species are now threatened by habitat loss, climate change, and the deadly chytrid fungus. The document outlines efforts to conserve endangered frog species in Haiti and the Dominican Republic through long-term monitoring programs, developing management guidelines, educating local communities, and establishing captive breeding populations. The goal is to prevent extinction of endemic frogs and protect the forest habitats in which they live.
The Designation & Management of Threatened Species: is there any point?Mario Balzan
The management of threatened species is an important practical way in which conservationists can intervene with extinction process and reduce the loss of biodiversity by ensuring some (high) probability of long-term species survival (Young, 1994; Norris, 2004). Though maintaining the whole ecosystem is often the target of conservationists, if a population is severely threatened this may not be sufficient. A more direct population management may be required (Hunter, 1996). To conserve such rare species there is a critical need to assess the impacts of threats on the long term survival of an individual population. This requires detailed information about the biology of the species concerned, the habitat it prefers, and the factors that might affect both of these (Root, 1998). Natural resource agencies worldwide develop species recovery plans that specify threats, propose targets required for recovery, and evaluate the extent to which habitat alteration and restoration may influence species decline and recovery (Good et al. 2003)

Invasive Alien Plant Species Assessment in Urban Ecosystem: A Case Study from...Surendra Bam
Invasive Alien Species (IAS) are the second most threat to biodiversity after habitat loss and fragmentation. Identifying the non-native species being naturalized in your region is the fundamental step for the upcoming management strategy in future.
IUCN is a globally important organisation for the conservation of nature and its resources. It is well known for Red data book. the species of organisms around the globe is grouped into several categories according to their need for conservation.
In this paper, I contend that non human animals are being subjected to torture and cruel experimentations by humans which are ongoing for centuries. This attitude which is ingrained in the thoughts of humanity is extended to other creatures in nature beginning with mankind and the non human world. Several endangered species are getting extinct in various ecological niches in an alarming rate. The pre colonial outlook of Africa did not experience these rapid ecological crises until the influence of phenomena such as colonization and globalization emanating from the Western culture. I argue that African countries have created a lot of ecological imbalances in their environment in an attempt to‘develop’. Also, factors like poverty and ignorance are germane in prompting Africans to over exploit and destroy their environment. Furthermore, in this paper I suggest that, Africans have to adopt an indigenous and Eco bio communitarian perspective to development based on effective African spirituality whereby man and nature commune together. Children must be thought African values from the primary to the university levels. This will enable them know that for human existence to be fruitful, there must be an interdependent relationship between man and nature. 2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

3. Introduction
– Why are they important?
– What role do they play in the ecosystem?
– How can a frog be useful to me?
4. Why are they important?
Phyllomedusa vaillanti
• Natural pest control (they eat a lot of insects)
• Food source for many animals. Societies like
China, France and some Amazon tribes eat frogs
• Amphibians that have an acuatic and terrestrial
life, help move nutrients in and out of acuatic and
terrestrial environments and food chains.
• In island ecosystems (like Haiti) frogs account for
the largest amount of vertebrate biomass
• They are part of our culture
5. Calls of some Haitian frog species
Mozart’s frog Lap-fè-lapli frog La Hotte land frog
6. What role do they play in the ecosystem?
Amphibians occupy every land ecosystem
7. How can a frog be useful to me?
They help public health by eating
mosquitos, that causes diseases
like malaria and dengue fever
They help the economy by eating pests
of crops, reducing harmful insects
and eliminating the need to use
pesticides
conservación a largo plazo; y
4) Estar preparado para responder de
inmediato a emergencias y crisis de
conservación (eventos de muertes masivas)
13. Causes of amphibian decline:
Chytrid fungus
• Identified in 1993 from tropical frogs
from Australia, Costa Rica, and US zoos
• Infectious disease that invades the
amphibian skin killing the frog
• Spread worldwide by introduced species
and humans.
15. Building Local Management Capacity
and Conservation Plans to Save
Endangered Frogs in Haiti and the DR
Macaya National Park
Macaya National Park
Sierra de Bahoruco
and
La Visite National Park
La Visite National Park Bahoruco Oriental
27. Philadelphia Zoo
Captive reproduction program to
save endangered frogs in Haiti
• Individual rooms for raising
frogs
• Each frog room has up to six
tanks to reproduce frogs by
species.
• One room for raising insect to
feed the frogs
• Additional for water filtration
and water storage tanks
35. Efforts to conserve amphibians and their habitat in the mountain ranges of
Massif de la Hotte and Massif de La Selle/Sierra de Bahoruco
36. LONG TERM IMPACT
• Help prevent the extinction of endemic frogs and their
habitats in the forests of Haiti and the Dominican Republic
• Help change attitudes towards these often feared
creatures
SHORT TERM IMPACTS
• 2-year species monitoring program to determine:
– habitat use, species assemblage, population size, structure and
recruitment, document breeding and foraging behavior
• Project will take place from October 2012 to September
2014.
37. WHAT WE AIM TO DO
1. Create awareness of the pressing issue of amphibian
extinction at the local and government levels.
2. Provide amphibian management guidelines to private and
government institutions.
3. Test for the presence of chytrid fungus
4. Understand how amphibians survive with deforestation and
extreme loss of habitat in fragmented habitats.
5. Incorporate our team to international amphibian
conservation initiatives.
38. HOW ARE WE GOING TO DO IT
1. Work with local NGO’s and government to develop
amphibian management guidelines that include in situ and
ex situ conservation measures.
2. Monitor amphibians populations to learn if:
• chytrid fungus is present
• Amphibians can maintain populations in degraded and
fragmented landscape
3. Provide our results to land managers and stakeholders in
Haiti and the Dominican Republic
39. Local Management Capacity and
Conservation Plans
• Round table discussion next week with government and
non government stakeholders from Haiti
• Ministry of Agriculture
Local Government • Ministry of Environment
• Université Quisqueya
Academic Institutions • Pennsylvania State University
• Société Audubon Haïti
