This document provides an overview of the State of the World's Waterbirds report from 2010. It discusses the following key points:
1. The Waterbird Index shows that the status of waterbird populations remains poor globally, with 44% decreasing and only 17% increasing.
2. There has been a marginal 5% decrease in the proportion of declining populations between 1975-2005, representing some progress towards biodiversity targets.

Diversity and species composition of mangroves species in Pilar, Siargao Isla...Innspub Net
Mangroves are considered as the most significant components of the coastal ecosystem and among the most productive and biologically complex ecosystems on the planet. Assessment of mangrove species plays a critical role in the preservation and protection of the mangroves forest. The study aimed to assess the mangrove species in Pilar, Siargao Island. The belt transect was employed with a dimension of modified 10 m x 12 m and was installed per quadrat. Eight mangrove species were identified under four families, and these are B. sexanguela, C. decandra, R. apiculata, R. mucronata, A. alba, A. marina, L. littorea, and X. granatum. One species, C. decandra is categorized by the IUCN as a near-threatened state. Results from the mangroves vegetation structure show that R. apiculata got the highest relative frequency (26.32%), density (35.46%), and dominance (55.08%) therefore; it has the highest importance value (116.85%). This further implies that R. apiculata is the most important and acclimated mangrove species in the study area. The species diversity in Pilar, Siargao Island falls under very low diversity (H’=1.63) which might be attributed to some human-related disturbances. Thus, further consideration in future planning and conservation to increase the resiliency of the mangrove ecosystem is needed.

Global warming influences have brought negative climate change consequences on global livelihoods and household food security of the world’s 36 million fisher folks and nearly 1.5 billion consumers who rely on fish for their dietary animal protein. The study concluded that lack of alternative livelihood opportunities options is the major constraints to adaptation for people living in the Lake Victoria region escalated with limitation of skills outside fishing industry, limitation of other employable professional skills including lack of capital. The study recommends a trans disciplinary consientization of adaptive strategies which can translate into flexible and sustainable CCA gender inclusive livelihood activities. Future research should explore participatory action research on environmental influences affecting CCA by comparing findings across other beaches. The 6 th World Parks Congress was organized in Sydney, Australia, in November 2014. More than 6,000 people from 170 countries attended this event which enabled conservation professionals to take stock of progress made since the previous congress, in Durban, South Africa, in 2003. And also to discuss the challenges that have emerged since then. From this point of view, Africa is particularly under pressure. The causes are many and have been the subject of numerous evaluations, some of them led by the IUCN Program on African Protected Areas & Conservation (IUCN-Papaco) since 2006. In addition to poor management effectiveness, one of these causes is the weak governance of most PAs, which negatively impacts on all activities that are conducted on the ground. That is why IUCN-Papaco focuses on governance in the context of a roadmap for Protected Areas: more ethical behavior, more legitimacy for decisions, accountability and transparency in the way they are made, more stakeholders involved, more professionalism for managers, more ownership of the tremendous assets that PAs offer, more recognition for those who succeed, more durability forconservation... these are the directions that this roadmap tries to promote for the future of conservation in Africa. To ensure a good participation of Africa at the congress, we launched a call for proposals open to stakeholders involved in and around PAs. The objective was to prepare key messages that would be brought to the congress by a team of conservationists coming from all over the continent. This was a great success and we received more than 150 proposals (from 33 African countries). After a rigorous selection process, 22 candidates were selected and became our "champions". Their messages cover all aspects of PA good governance, PA management efficiency and the sustainability of conservation. Together, they deliver a comprehensive and consistent message about the present and the future of protected areas on the continent and were to some extent "the voice of Africa" at the congress. All these champions indeed travelled to Sydney and were able to speak clearly and loudly about conservation in Africa. And they were listened to. This book is about this fantastic journey. It gathers all these experiences and tells you the story of our 22 champions, their messages and their hope. Whilst certainly not comprehensive, it gives you a good overview of what Africa can produce in terms of conservation when stakeholders, on the ground, commit themselves for the sake of African Nature.

This publication analyses the changes in the status of waterbird populations between 1976 and 2005 using the data collected for the four editions of Waterbird Population Estimates published by the organisation since 1994.
Fisheries and aquaculture are receiving increasing attention, not only because they represent an important source of livelihoods and food, but also because of our increasing understanding of aquatic ecosystems.
Many fish stocks are currently overexploited, and the international nature of the resources makes them difficult to manage. Is the current food supply in danger?
ABSTRACT: Philippines is known for its vast biodiversity as a mega diverse country. On a per-unit-area
basis, it boasts the most diversified life forms. Its biodiversity, which includes a diverse range of flora and
wildlife, provides supplies for human survival, fosters economic development, and provides environmental
services. However, the country's biodiversity may be threatened by inappropriate usage and management. The
country has been designated as a biodiversity hotspot and a high conservation priority worldwide. Policies to
protect and conserve biodiversity in the country have been implemented, including legislation on access and
benefit sharing.
The annual global production of fishmeal and fish oil is currently around five million tonnes of meal and one million tonnes of oil (Figure 1), except in years when the fishing in the South Pacific is disrupted by the warm waters of an El Niňo, most recently in 2010. Around 22 million tonnes of raw material is used, of which approximately 75 percent comes from whole fish and 25 percent from by-products of processing fish for human consumption (IFFO estimates).

The mangroves of Panamá store and sequester enormous amounts of organic carbon not only in their vegetation, but also in roots and soil. Wetlands International works together with UNDP and national governmental authorities to find out how much exactly and to make sure that these carbon pools and sinks are better managed and protected. For their contribution to climate change mitigation, but also to maintain their broad range of ecosystem services in support of local adaptation.

The Waterbird Index is based on the trend data compiled for the four editions of 1976–1985 1986–1995 1996–2005

636 had trend estimates in the periods of 1976–85, 1986–95 and 1996–2005,

across the whole time series, and these are not geographically and taxonomically -0.6

Relatively small decreases in rainfall in Africa have been shown to cause unexpectedly large drops in river flows20. It was
found that with a 10% decrease in rainfall, discharge would drop by 17% in regions where annual rainfall was 1000 mm,
but the impact was much greater (50%) in regions with only 500 mm of rainfall. Dams and irrigation schemes further
accentuate the impacts. If climate change does cause reductions in rainfall in Africa, the pressures on biodiversity and
people in already stressed environments will cause increasing competition for diminishing natural resources. This will be

Climate change is predicted to have disproportionate effects in Arctic regions, which are
intr
crucial breeding areas for many waterbird species. The Arctic is the source of a great
many flyways, with 279 bird species, a majority of them waterbirds, breeding in
significant numbers there, and spending the non-breeding period in significant numbers
outside the region. Of these, 30 species migrate as far as southern Africa, 26 species
reach Australia and 22 species reach southern South America21. The tundra zone
occupies the northernmost land on earth, and as the climate warms, its extent will
decrease as temperatures necessary to maintain its habitat shift north into the Arctic
pressure
Ocean. A study of 25 Arctic-nesting waterbird species predicted wide-scale loss of
breeding ranges. For example the Globally Threatened Red-breasted Goose which
breeds in Arctic Siberia and winters in south eastern Europe, would lose 67% of its
breeding habitat with moderate warming of 1.7 ˚C and 99% of this habitat with more
extreme warming of 5.0˚C. The Tundra Bean Goose would lose 76% of its breeding
habitat with moderate warming (1.7˚C) and 93% of this habitat with more extreme
warming (5.0 ˚C)22.

Invasive alien species
The introduction of non-native species is a common cause of
imbalance in ecosystems which can lead to population declines and even
cause extinctions. Interactions between a non-native species and its new
environment are often complex and unexpected, and are usually
detrimental.
Fish species are often introduced for sport and as an essential source of
food and the impacts can be catastrophic. For example, the Alaotra Grebe
in Madagascar was declared extinct in 2010, an important cause of which
was identified as competition with a species of introduced carnivorous
fish23. Grebes in South America are similarly threatened and the Hooded
Grebe is recognised as being especially threatened by introduced trout
and salmon24. Specialised island forms around the world have been over-AbundAnce
