David Hume Morality
Hume on Morality and Reason In book three of A Treatise of Human Nature, David Hume writes
about the nature of morality and its connection to our faculty of reason. He argues that our moral
evaluation is not based solely in reason, though still influenced by the conclusions reason
produces. In this essay, I will explain Hume s argument against reason as the base of our moral
evaluation, and the assumptions on which it relies. This will be followed by explaining what,
according to Hume, moral evaluation is based on and how it resolves the difficulties that a reason
based moral system would raise. Finally, I will explain why Hume s moral requirements have some
issues, particularly with objectivity, and explain why such a system is not actually... Show more

In sufficiently large groups, there is enough diversity that it is nearly impossible to sympathize
with the ideals and desires of everyone else. Of course, Hume says that one should sympathize
with the general point of view , but, if that is the case, it needs to be determined how general this
point of view should be. Sympathizing with just ones immediate family, friend group, or clique
could fracture society into moral factions. Nearby societal groups may hold similar moral traits
as virtuous; however, enough distance may result in incredible variance that would cause society
to be difficult to govern at a large scale. This situation does not reduce moral relativism, but
simply shifts it to a larger scale, resulting in morals relative to small groups. Rather than solving
the problem of relativism, it eliminates any moral objectivity at all, since each group would
decide on moral traits that work best as subjective to that group. In the opposite case, one may
sympathize so generally that alternative views may be suppressed so as to avoid being insensitive
to others. Such a scenario could result in an extensive hive mind in which nonconformists are
viewed as unsympathetic or immoral, rather than merely being in a natural state of justified
disagreement. This situation appears to be easily exploitable, since it promotes groupthink by
means of a near universal objective morality. In both cases, the plausibility of the system is likely
tarnished. If the narrow circle is too narrow, it will likely result in small scale collectives with
almost no moral objectivity, but if the narrow circle is too large, then the system appears to be
oppressive and entirely objective. There is the possibility of a middle ground for the size of the
narrow circle, but finding and maintaining such a state seems entirely impractical and still

Twelfth Night Conventions
A people, without the knowledge of their past, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.
Marcus Garvey, and such is the case with Shakespearean English comedy in particular. A
knowledge of comedic subgenres and conventions assists and informs one s understanding of the
stage drama, Twelfth Night. A knowledge of genre and generic features helps to develop and
broaden the meaning of many a play, and in particular, Twelfth Night. The play Twelfth Night,
written around 1600 BC, is one of the great Romantic Comedies comedyfocusing on love, marriage
and courtship of William Shakespeareand is still today regarded a literary classic. It is written in the
pastoral tradition,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Every major character in Twelfth Night experiences some form of desire or love. Duke Orsino
is in love with Olivia. Viola falls in love with Orsino, while disguised as his pageboy, Cesario.
Olivia falls in love with Cesario, causing an interesting love triangle, which is only resolved
when Olivia falls in love with Viola s twin brother, Sebastian, and, at the last minute, Orsino
decides that he actually loves Viola. Twelfth Night derives much of its comic force by satirising
these lovers. For example, Orsino s flowery love poetry is made fun of, demonstrating that
Orsino is more in love with the concept of being in love than his supposed beloveds, as
demonstrated in Act One If music be the food of love, play on; Give me excess of it, that,
surfeiting, the appetite may sicken, and so die. Also, by showing the particulars that govern how
nobles engage in courtship, Shakespeare examines how characters play the game of love.
Characters that claim to be of deep passions are often revealed as self absorbed, foolish, and
misguided, as they fall victim to unfortunate love. Twelfth Night, considers the relationship
between erotic desire and gender and examines more overt same sex desire, even as it steadily
works its way towards the completion of the play, which ends with heterosexual couplings and
marriage in a way for

What Makes a Just Society Essay
What Makes A Just Society?
Throughout history, people have been trying to create an improved, fair, and equal system of
justice, not only to better society in which one lives, but to also find a sense of meaning in what
responsibilities people should hold within their civilizations in order to create this just way of
living. As early as the Old Testament within the Bible, we see examples of how the Hebrews
formed their own justice. This can be seen in the in text of the Ten Commandments which were
written in a form of law. Laws were significant even in this basic form of context, such as the Ten
Commandments, which offered the ideas of right and wrongdoings and the sin for violating others
for one s own benefit. This not only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The idea then of a just society I contend, comes down to people living under a fair and common
law, order, political system, social organization, as well as everyone having personal and political
freedom. Many people, besides myself, have also contemplated this question, whether a utopian
society could exist, and have put forth their own theories. Karl Marx and John Rawls are two
thinkers that questioned what the theory of justice. Marx believed that history was always
moving forward towards a utopian ending. Marx disliked injustice and declared this in his
Communist Manifesto in 1846. His theory is centered on the idea that forms of society rise and
fall as they develop and then became an obstacle for the development of human productive
power and reality is governed by economic needs. This belief means that the present organization
of society must be destroyed. To establish this new society, people must be organized and take up
the struggle against the capitalists who take advantage of them. This struggle, according to Marx,
will end in victory for the workers. However, Marx was unable to discover what laws and
principles that would produce the just society in which he strived for. John Rawls was the second
most important political thinker of his time. His main contribution to the idea of a civil society is
his theory of justice. Rawls believed in social primary goods which included rights,

The Purpose of Theatre during the 20th Century
The Purpose of Theatre during the 20th Century Throughout centuries, theatre has been an
enormous impact throughout society. During the 18th century, theatre had played a significant role
to society because it emphasized Rationalism (The Age of Reason), which began to lead away from
the limitations of Neoclassicism. Then in the 19th century, theatrewas important because it
introduced Melodrama or music dramato increasingly emphasize the emotions and personalities of
the characters. And finally the 20th century, in which where it had transformed the whole ideology
of what theatre was truly represented. One purpose of theatre during the 20th century was to
emphasize realism. Realism had initially begun as an experiment to make theatre more impactful
to society. It was a reaction against the 19th century s ideology of theatre, melodrama. It had soon
become a well known innovation in mainstream theatre. Due to its common ideology, it had also
caused adventurous innovations to aspire as well. The reason for emphasizing realism was for
realistic artists to create an illusion of everyday life onstage.
A similar movement to realism that changed the ideology of theatre was naturalism; a movement
that had originally began in France in the 19th century and spread throughout Europe in the 20th
century. Naturalists rebut that the presentation should be represented as a slice of life . Many of the
naturalists believed that the most appropriate

Summary Of A Novel By Aldo Leopold
In this novel written by Aldo Leopold, he brings in a dreamy imagery ridden writing that entices the
reader. Along with photographs that go along with his journey and conservation. The book goes in
order of months starting with January and once it hits December, instead of months they are
replaced with locations. Leopold takes his stance to talk about conservation, but not only that he
goes on to make the point of the importance of trying to maintain harmony through what Leopold
termed as land ethics. Leopold takes a different route of explain things that are constructed in this
novel, in every observation he so vividly describes for the reader. Leopold takes his love and
respect for land and heartfully writes this novel to inform others about the beauty of land as well.
Although, Leopold s novel was in three sections, each serving its own purpose. Nevertheless, each
still all came together to connect with the same theme, which was to have harmony between nature
and humanity.
In the beginning of the novel Leopold begins by giving the reader the census of changing of
ecosystems, exploring the interactions among animals as well as plants and the impact of
interactions through the seasons. He widens the field, giving the reader a realistic idea of
landscapes. Leopold also goes on to share in the second section his journey to various farms and
places throughout the United States, not holding anything back. Leopold addresses the important
issues such as declining natural

Annie Get Your Gun By Ethel Merman And Ray Middleton
Anything you do, I can do better; I can do anything, better than you , in Annie Get Your Gun
performed by Ethel Merman and Ray Middleton, is one of many examples that are still battled
today on the topic of gender roles playing essentially to modern society. Historically, the
relationship between female and male has almost always been unequal and oppressive; but, a
feminist critic would aim to critique the nature of genderroles. In a feminist theory, it mainly focuses
women s role as well as their social standing in a society. In today s society, women empower
society to promote matriarchy whereas a female becomes the head of the family. Since the
nineteenth century up until today in the twenty first century, society has made assumptions about
female based on their gender. For instance, people often assume that men are strong and women are
weak and that women cannot control their emotions, and that men are better at hunting, and that
women belong in the kitchen. Oftentimes, books and movies can confirm such stereotypes of
males as action heroes and women as housewives; however, through the characters of Katniss and
Peeta in The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins tries to show her readers that these assumptions are
false.
Moreover, Katniss is an individual who breaks away from the typical gender stereotypes that one
would assume while reading. In fact, showing her feminine side to readers, Katniss is simply a
nurturer because of how she takes care of others like Rue and Peeta

Achoo Syndrome Research Paper
Have you ever sneezed two to four times or maybe 40 times when you went out for a walk, or
when you went to the picture studio to have your picture taken and just could not take a picture
without sneezing? Achoo Syndrome or Autosomal Dominant Compelling Helio Ophthalmic
Outburst Syndrome is a condition that causes uncontrollable sneezing because of bright light or
intense sunlight. Achoo Syndrome is also known as photic sneezing which means too much
sunlight or too much light can cause a person to sneeze multiple times or maybe once. This
syndrome is a dominant trait so therefore if one parent has the syndrome there is 50% chance that
their child could have it too. Achoo syndrome has not been yet evidentially or clearly researched.
Scientists do not understand how sunlight or light flashes can cause a person to sneeze, every time
a person is exposed to it. Some researchers think Achoo syndrome is caused by a malfunction in the
nerve which is connected to the trigeminal nerve, and that could be connected to the visual nerve
which makes people sneeze when exposed to direct sunlight or light. Achoo syndrome affects about
18 35% of the population in the world.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

To Build A Fire Literary Analysis
To Build a Fire by Jack London, is about a man who is unnamed, who travels from the Yukon trail
on a deathly cold morning with a wolf dog to meet up with his friends at a camp at Henderson
Creek. The man is advised by a wise old man to not travel alone in such weather when it is
extremely cold. But the man doesn t pay attention to the little things and disregards the warnings
and continues his journey. The central idea suggests a broad theme of man versus nature. Jackson
shows this idea through intellectual (traveler) versus instinctive (wolf dog). The travelers lack of
recognition for instinctive decisions leads him on the path of self destruction and death.

The old man at Sulphur Creek provides a supporting role in the story. He is repeatedly brought
up throughout the story when the traveler recalls the advice he was given. The man was
extremely serious when he said that no man should travel alone (Jackson ). His advice and
warning are what creates tension to the story. The traveler brushes off the old man s advice and
says the old man probably couldn t do handle it because old men are womanish (Jackson ). As the
traveler continues his journey he realizes that being alone and traveling in such cold weather is
dangerous. When he makes the fire the first time he makes it under a pine tree. The snow from
the tree falls on the fire taking away the warmth he needed to reheat his body. The second time
he tries to make the fire he couldn t hold on to the matches. The matches fell on the floor and he
says how if he had a companion on the trail he would be in no danger (Jackson ). He recalls how
if he was traveling with someone the companion could have built the fire. Now, he must build the
fire again, and this second time he must not fail (Jackson). Later, he says perhaps the old man on
Sulphur Creek was right. If he had a companion on the trail he would be in no danger now (Jackson
). He also understands how the world is more instinctual instead of intellectual. He doesn t realize
until later that there might be a situation which he cannot

Video Game Industry Has Undergone Significant Changes From...
The video game industry has undergone significant changes from the early days of Atari. It now
covers multiple sectors and generates more revenue than the movie and music industry. Last year
total revenue in the U.S. eclipsed $23.5 billion, jumping 5% from a year earlier. A big part of that
increase is due to a shift away from physical games towards digital software. In the past 5 years
video gamepublishers have focused on expanding their direct to consumer channels through robust
digital offerings. Meanwhile, the emergence of mobile gaming, eSports and virtual reality are
poised to take the industry by storm in the next few years. With the industry growing at a rapid
clip, it should be near the top of any investor s list.
Video Game Industry
For starters, the video game industry consists of three primary sectors; PC, console and mobile.
PC gaming is currently the biggest moneymaker followed by console and mobile. However,
mobile is poised to eclipse both PC and console sales in the next 5 years. Console gaming
remains a blue chipper in the industry with limited upside or downside potential. Despite the
booming popularity of PC games, computer sales continue to struggle. Names like HP (HPQ) and
IBM (IBM) continue to point to a weak PC market as the source of its problems. Both stocks are
down double digits in the past 12 months and should only be pursued as long term investments.
Console gaming, on the other hand, has become so advanced that they are essentially

Prohibition Of The Fourteenth Amendment Essay
Introduction: 21st Amendment Following the passage of the 18th Amendment in 1919, which
outlawed the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of alcohol, the United States entered a period of
time now known as Prohibition (U.S. Const. amend. XVIII). Immediately following the passage of
the 18th Amendment, consumption of alcohol, alcohol related injuries, and crime decreased
(Schaeffer, 2011, p. 402). However, it did not take long for the governmentto realize that Prohibition
came with many unintended consequences. According to Schaeffer (2011), state and local
governments were ill prepared to handle the vast responsibilities of enforcing the law, which led to
increased organized crime, corruption, and the failure of the law as a whole. 73% of Americans
favored the repeal of the 18th Amendment in its entirety by the time the 21st Amendment was
passed (Schaeffer, 2011, p. 408). The 21st Amendment was finally ratified in 1933 effectively
ending prohibition. Aside from repealing the 18th Amendment, it also granted the states the right to
regulate alcohol within their own borders and set a time limit for ratification of the law (U.S.
Const. amend. XXI). Overall, this amendment decreased the powers of the federal government by
delegating the authority over alcohol to the states. In relation to the 21st Amendment, it shows
several important aspects of public administration. First, it highlights some of the public values that
are integral to being an American citizen. According

Development Of Artificial Minerals And Its Effects
Development of Artificial Minerals
From the start of civilization, man has demonstrated intriguing interest in natural crystals including
gems (Kesler Simon, 2015). Later, man used natural minerals such as mica, diamond, corundum,
and quartz for different applications including cutting abrasion, and electrical appliances among
others (Kogel, 2006). During the Second World War, the demand for natural minerals in technical
applications increased significantly and endangered the supply. However, this situation alongside
technological advancements had a positive impact because it led to the birth of synthetic crystals
(Goodman, 2013). In the synthetic crystal industry, the disciplines of geology, physics, chemistry,
ceramics, and metallurgy merge to enable man create a wide variety of synthetic minerals (Degryse
Elsen, 2003). Over the years, scientists have used different methods to develop synthetic minerals.
The development of artificial minerals has many benefits as discussed in this report.
Artificial minerals are minerals made in the laboratory (Jayaraman, 2000). Despite being artificial,
these minerals have the same chemical, optical, and physical features associated with natural
minerals (Degryse Elsen, 2003). Even though large scale manufacture of synthetic minerals started
after the Second World War, the practice traces its history to the late 1800s when synthetic rubywas
first produced (Weldon, 2016). Different man made minerals have use in communications, laser

Wage Slavery Research Paper
When people hear the word slavery, they picture chains, shackles, and labor harder than any man
woman or child should ever have to endure. Slavery can be in many more forms than this however.
Many men, women, and children were slaves during the 19th and early 20th century, this type of
slavery they were in was wageslavery. Wage slavery is a person completely dependens on income
from employment. Many men were forced to work hard long hours, women were also expected to

Their idea of a solution was to hire children to be able to take care of parts that could not be
accomplished by larger men. Factories everywhere started taking in children ages 5 and up for

children either wanted to or were forced to go into work to help support their families. Many of
these children did not receive schooling; therefore ensuring them living out their lives in
factories. Because they were children, people sought to take advantage of them money wise,
causing them to work for close to nothing. Women were not immune to this type of unfairness.
Many women went to work in textile factories or domestic services. Having women work and
still being expected to raise a family had a very negative impact on the growing families. Because
women were still less than men during this time, no matter what job a women was put in, she
would receive less pay than a man. This inequality led to many members of the household going

The Story behind Diamonds
Diamonds are one of the most popular minerals in the world and yet people are not aware of the
circumstances it takes to acquire this such unique mineral. Many people would agree when I say
that this mineral is such a nice thing to look at, but few people actually know what it is made of
and how it was formed. These precious minerals are composed of Carbon. The process to making
this immaculate mineral is as following. First, you must bury Carbon dioxide deep into the earth;
approximately, 100 miles deep. Second, you must heat the substance at a temperature of 2,200
degrees fahrenheit. Next, squeeze or tightly compact the substance under pressure of 725,000
pounds per square inch. Finally, it must quickly rush to the earths surface to cool off. All this must
be done just to create diamond. Luckily for some men, scientist have created an alternative of the
mined diamonds, it is a synthetic diamond composed of the same things and look almost
identical. So if you re planning to pop the big question soon you have options with that part of the
proposal. When you think of the price of real diamonds you might think that they are pretty
expensive and what makes them so special. Along with its looks, it is a rare mineral that still has a
high demand. The places where you can find high concentrations are usually far away. As a matter
of fact, the location that has the largest concentration of diamonds is in central and southern Africa.
It is reported that they have 49% of

something that was an institution and was regularly watched every Sunday night. The reason
why it was such a celebrated part of all American families was because even with awkward

American families. The show had its first telecast in the summer of 1948, and was produced
with a limited budget of only $1375. The show was one of many quite similar to it that had very

they went for it anyway with only $375 set aside for talent and the two young stars of the show

what goes on in a person with BPD s brain, for their aggression and impulsivity to be triggered.
This study was conducted by neuroscientists and psychologists at University of Pittsburgh, and
Wayne State University in Detroit. The study was done on fifty six female patients from various
clinics who had met all or most of the criteria for having Borderline Personality Disorder. Their
ages ranged from 18 45. The reason given for only testing on women, is that women make up
seventy five percent of people with BPD an overwhelming majority. The subjects were
submitted to a series of tests, including an fMRI scan, a series of Go No Go tests which
incorporated different expressions from the Ekman faces test. The Go No Go test helped the
psychologists with behavioral data analysis, as they recorded the patients hit rates (correct
responses), and false alarm rates (errors.) Subjects were all told to remain on any medications they
had been prescribed, even during the fMRI scans. It was found that many people who suffer from
BPD also have other mental illnesses. Nineteen subjects reported having depression, while eleven

Poetry Research and Analysis Essay
Persuasive
Wouldn t it be great if everything was just black and white, unfortunately that s not always the
case? To me, the answer to the question regarding song lyrics being poetry is more complicated
than yes or no. I think it falls in the gray area in the middle. In respect to that, I will discuss the fact
that poetry and songs can be different in structure yet very similar in meaning; that without the
voice implemented in the music, songs loose poetic and emotional value; and that the amount of
literary merit does not define something as poetry and something that is not.

Despite the similarities, and plethora of areas to compare these two a distinction should be
made. While both are intertwined with the usage of literary devices they should not be

Charles Engen Chapter Summary
Charles Engen initiates us positively by encouraging us to think what if each church would begin
to see itself as God s Missionary People. There is much to commend in his book as Engen asks the
church to become in fact what it is by faith, a marvelous statement. Further insights come from
statistical analysis, probing questions of eccesiology directed at questioning if we superimpose
ourselves in areas of polity, form, structure or tradition upon the cultures we reach. I agree
completely that making cosmetic changes or restructuring the denomination may not translate into
crossing barriers from church to non church for the sake of the gospel. The church is compared
with the noble works of the para church which forces us to think about how... Show more content on

Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. 2 Corinthians 6:17 Now the world, in this
sense, is an enemy to the soul. There are three things which a baptized Christian must renounce
and give up, and three enemies which he must fight with and resist. These three are the flesh, the
devil, and the world. All three are terrible foes, and all three must be overcome if we would be
saved. It is clear to me that some of the churches quoted by Engen have made great strides in
technology and skill in planning and execution of management with wonderful music, yet are
astray. We would smile if only Engen would have saturated himself with Godly quotes from
within his bibliographic choices such as De Ridder as he speaks of (De Ridder, 1975) Matthew.
The designation of the sheep in Matt. 15:24 as lost has the strong sense of crisis in it. For one

The Crucible Reverend Hale Quotes
Reverend Hale in Salem Reverend Hale s faith and his belief in people divide him from others.
Hale comes to Salem to help with a need from the town. His job is to find evidence witch craft
and help. He is devoted to his faith and helping others. Through out the play he changes from a
confident and easily deceived man to a doubtful and unsure of his abilities. Since Hale is
motivated by faith, his decision to believe the towns people led to the death of many innocent
people. The action of the play severely test Hale s faith in God and understanding of people. Hale
is over confident in his work when he first comes to Salem. He states, Pray you, someone take
these! In that quote his attitude is determined and ready to start investigating. He wants the truth
and help the people of Salem. He is passionate about finding the issue in this town. While
interrogating Tituba, Hale states, You will confess yourself or I will take you out and whip you to
your death, Tituba. He is passionate about finding the devil in the townspeople that he has threaten
to beat them to death if they don t confess. And he will soon regret how much passion he has shown.

Followers, Fans And Fever Pitch
Looking at football from a perspective other than just the physical aspect of the game is such an
interesting topic because you can truly begin to see how the game has changed socially and
economically. The rules itself have stayed the same for many years, but the social aspect of the
game has changed dramatically. As I will talk about, in my opinion, there are fewer fans that have a
true connection with their club which relates to both of this weeks readings: Supporters, Followers,
Fans and Fever Pitch.
Connecting Supporters, Followers, Fans and Flaneurs by Richard Guilianotti and Fever Pitch by
Nick Hornby, it is clear to understand what type of fan Hornby was according to Guilianotti.
Hornby clearly displays a strong passion for his club, Arsenal, and based off the stories that he
tells he would be classified as a supporter. A supporter has a long term personal and emotional
investment in the club which results in a strong passion for anything involving their club
(Guilianotti 33). I thought how the three pieces of writing connected were interesting because it
seems to me today that in today s world you do not hear about people that are so strongly
passionate about clubs and teams anymore like Hornby. But why?
In my perspective there may be a multitude of reasons which include football not being as popular
here in the United States and that football appears to be so socially based compared to what it used
to be. Throughout Hornby s book Fever Pitch I constantly got

How Hip Hop Connects With Many Different Real World Problem
Chang writes in his book about how hip hop connects with many different real world problem
going on politically and socially in many different places. He tells a story of a beaten and
battered area of South Bronx. In this small area there was no law or order since many jobs were
lost and most of what was left there were people of color from different parts of the world,
including Puerto Rico and Jamaica. Due to the lack of protection Chang tells us that gangs were
created as a means of protection from the junkies and other scavengers. Their way of dealing with
things was very violent in nature, later on when more and more gangs started popping up they
became territorial. They attacked other members who wore their colors on another gangs turf. South
Bronx became a very dangerous place full of nothing but youthful gangs and gang related
violence. Socially it was the lack of jobs and other necessities that led to the creation of hip hop.
There became a treaty of sorts, although its terms weren t really discussed, but the gangs decided
instead of focusing on violence and other things maybe they could focus on music to show the
world their struggle. So all the different gangs started producing different strands of what we call
hip hop. Each had different roots in it that all became mixed into a sort of melting pot.
The four elements are DJing, B boying, MCing, and graffiti. The appeal of Hip Hop was how it
brought to light the struggle that was going on in South Bronx and all

The Waffle House Essay
The Waffle House
It s late one Friday night. You, accompanied by a select group of your closest friends, drive down
the interstate, wanting desperately to be at home in the warmth of your bed. Suddenly, the lot of
us sees the sign. Like a beacon it is, summoning us to it like proverbial moths to a flame.
Forgetting about the need for sleep, we turn onto the off ramp, a string of drool dripping down and
off of your chin. Waffle House, we say with a gleam in our eyes, we have arrived. What follows
will be one of the most important events of our adult lives: a tireless ritual continuing into infinity
all across the nation s good expanse.

Our struggle, however, is forgotten once the waitress finally arrives, casually sauntering over to us
with looks of total indifference. She stuffs her loose and falling hair back up into her gaudy,
burgundy cloth hat.
So, whaddyallhave? she asks, waiting for us to decipher her strange and jumbled dialect. More
often than not, the only reason we come here is to order what Waffle House is most famous for,
and that (as if you needed to be told) is coffee. Waffle House coffee is a mystical brew with high
caffeine content and an identifiable taste. No other restaurant s coffee is as desirable, because only
Waffle House s has that real man, industrial strength flavor. Grumpily, the waitress stomps away,
aware that her tip will be far less than generous.
Anyone who knows anything about the politics behind the Waffle House experience also knows
that there are definite rules and guidelines that dictate how the course of events is to be played out
during the span of a single visit. This routine begins with the arrival of the much anticipated cups of
coffee, continues with pleasant conversation and playful intercourse amongst the customers, and
culminates with the paying of the check and the inevitable departure. Our Waffle House chef makes
the claim that the people who frequent the restaurant are, for the most part, regulars and that they

A Country Using A Central Government
Running a country using a central government has always been a topic of debate.
How do a handful of people govern the free will of millions of others? The details of the
word govern used in the previous statement have evolved into a seemingly endless
quantity of laws, acts, policies, taxes, rules, parties, and on goes the list. Though
government is growing evermore punctilious in it s outward appearance, these
meticulously crafted rules or guidelines are the tools used by the government to
promote the well being of the nation. Whether or not these tools are used effectively and
frequently enough is a question that arises many different responses, often differing
vastly. Personally, I believe the government does well in some aspects of the well being
of our country but not so well in others.
At the very basis of the federal government s involvement in privacy lie the
Fourth and Fifth Amendments. The fourth amendment was composed with one sole
purpose: to guarantee security in one s rightful domain. So long as a citizen is law
abiding, this amendment provides legal privacy of their property. The Fifth Amendment
guarantees that private property shall not be taken for use of the public, without just
compensation. In regards to private property, these two Constitutional Amendments
create a crude yet stout foundation to protect one s property. The Federal Government
enforces these amendments through the due process ; typically meaning the

Meridian Plaza Fire
The One Meridian Plaza fire that took place on February 23, 1991 was an utter disaster in which
everything went wrong. Starting with the initial fire detection and continuing to the eventual
suppression of the fire, events unfolded in manner that heavily stacked the chips against fire
fighters of Philadelphia. Even though this was a tragedy of immense proportions, there are lessons
to be learned and behaviors to be rectified through a thorough study. With an examination of
multiple factors, including the building s construction, occupancy, fire protection systems, the
nature of the fire fighters response, and the fire growth and control to name a few, a clearer picture
of what happened February 23, 1991 can be realized. Furthermore, lessons... Show more content on

On arrival they witnessed smoke and flames on the mid level of the building. Two battalion
chiefs arrived on scene and one proceeded to set up incident command at the lobby, while the
other led fire fighters up the building for fire attack (Routley 8). One of the security guards then
informed the chiefs that the fire was on the 22nd floor, and at 2033 battalion chief 5 ordered a
second alarm (Routley 8). Due to insufficient fire protection around the utility lines all power
was lost to the building (Routley 8). At the loss of primary power the emergency generator didn t
kick in due to improper maintenance it was unable to start (Routley 8). This profoundly impacted
the fire operations for the remainder of the incident because the entire building was left without
electricity (Routley 8). As stated in the tactical report, This total power failure had a major impact
on the firefighting operations. The lack of lighting made it necessary for firefighters to carry out
suppression operations in complete darkness using only battery powered lights. Since there was no
power to operate elevators, firefighters were forced to hand carry all suppression equipment
including SCBA replacement cylinders up the stairs to the staging area that was established on the
20th floor. In addition, personnel had to climb at least 20 floors

The World Of Global Warming
The eighth Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki moon once said, The clear and present
danger of climate change means we cannot burn our way to prosperity. We already rely too heavily
on fossil fuels. We need to find a new, sustainable path to the future we want. We need a clean
industrial revolution ( Ban Ki moon ). Collectively, we burn fossil fuels without recognition of the
repercussions it has on the environment and our well being. Air pollution causes climate change,
shown through the increase in greenhouse gases, and environmental and health effects. Although
global warmingis a relatively newly found epidemic, it has the support of science and should no
longer be a topic of debate.

Although Keeling s research was conducted on carbon dioxide levels, other greenhouse gases have
seen a large increase since the industrial revolution. Water vapor is the most copious greenhouse gas
. Water vapor is only termed as a greenhouse gas for its strong correlation with the average
worldwide temperature. Similar to Earth s temperature, water vapor levels have gradually been
increasing, leading to an increase in precipitation. Another greenhouse gas is methane, a
hydrocarbon gas. Methane levels are heavily influenced by human activities, such as rice cultivation
and manure management. Methane is a deadlier gas to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide is, but
carbon dioxide is more abundant in the atmosphere ( Global Climate Change ). As these greenhouse
gases continue to permeate the atmosphere, they absorb heat normally radiated back toward space
and release this heat to the surface of the Earth.
Air pollution creates a variety of different effects on the environment. Many of air pollution s
effects are visible: the loss of ice on ice caps and the premature flowering of plants and trees. Air
pollution has a great effect on the weather forecast. As stated earlier, the warmer the Earth s surface
becomes the more water vapor is released into the atmosphere, this causes a variation of extreme
weather changes. Climate change affects every region

The Health Care System Of The United States As A Whole Essay
The primary focus of this article was to inform its readers of the multiple aspects of the health
care system in the United States as a whole. Within this article, the subjects of health care that are
reviewed are a) the US government s position as the insurer for roughly 60 percent of the
healthcare spending in the US via the public sector, b) the analysis of the funding for government
health care programs such as Medicare, Medicall, and Medicaid and c) the programs in place for
the health care of children and program administration for war veterans. The author discusses health
care policy being at the forefront of world economics and modern medical science as it sets in
motion governing policies and procedure associated with the financial funding and pharmaceutical
appropriation of health care insurance. In the article, Totic presents the notion of health policyin the
US and abroad as an irrefutable necessity as well as for health policies to be simple and in many
ways effective when it came to proper execution of health procedures and proper distribution of
both health information and other resources used in the health care setting. The author expresses
the goal of an effective health care policy as one that ultimately governs and helps maintain the
management of quality of life experienced by the citizens in the United States. The main focus of
the health care policy to be able to both assists in activities for consumption of tobacco, alcohol and

Nosocomial Infection Paper
When people go into hospitals, they expect to be treated from what illness they have. The US
Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that one in twenty five patients will obtain
nosocomial infections (Mercola No p). Readers may think that these statistics are not that bad, but
when readers become educated on how dangerous and how easy it is to acquire this infection they
will think twice. The most common ways to acquire nosocomial infections are central line
associated bloodstream, catheter associated urinary tract, surgical site after surgery, clostridium

the long run taking antibiotics is not always going to help a person. Some pathogens that antibiotics

How to Build a Cedar Raised Garden Bed
This first step in making your raised bed can range from being easy to intensive based on how

Keep in mind that you can use pretty much any type of wood for this. Cedar, Pine, Juniper, or
Redwood are the preferred types of wood for raised boxes due to their resistance to the elements
and long lifespan but you can certainly use any reclaimed or recycled wood. The one type of
wood I would stay away from is pressure treated lumber as the chemicals used to treat the wood
can leach into the soil. Regular pressure treated lumber sold today has a mixture of chemicals
applied to prevent the moist soil and weather from rotting it. Even though pressure treated wood
is certified as safe for organic growing, some people have reservations about using it, and there are
numerous eco friendly alternatives. More expensive woods, such as cedar, contain natural oils
which prevent rotting and make them much more durable. They are more expensive to buy, but
they will last many more years. Choosing thicker boards can make the wood last longer. For
example, 2 inch thick locally sourced larch should last 10 years, even without treatment.
The first step in this process is to select the area of your yard to place your raised garden. You
preferably want a level area that gets plenty of sunshine. Decide on the size of your bed, which can
be any size from a simple two by two foot box for spice plants or flowers to as large as you want. I
selected an eight by eight box, which I felt was large enough to fit a variety of plants but not too

75 mile trip crossing the Continental Divide the group was found by a group of Shoshones. The
Shoshone leader was Sacagawea s brother Cameahwait, and after 5 years Sacagawea was finally
reunited with her family. If it wasn t for Sacagawea, Lewis and Clark were able to purchase the
horses needed for their westward travel. Sacagawea proved as a valued interpreter and peacemaker
in the expedition s meetings with new tribes, who were ready to defend their land, and during
encounters with Shoshone speaking chiefs. She guided the expedition through her familiar
homelands and proved to be invaluable to the leaders. After the expedition, Sacagawea returned to
her Hidatsa Mandan home with her husband Charbonneau, and their son Baptiste. Six years later
she gave birth to her daughter Lisette on December 22, 1812. Although Sacagawea died at age 25,

Chinese Cinderella Yen Mah Character Analysis
How does Adeline Yen Mah, author of Chinese Cinderella, portray some character as nurturing
and other as neglectful? Chinese Cinderella, is an autobiography by the author herself, Adeline
Yen Mah. As a child her mother passed away, her new mother, Niang, has a cruel personality and
is disrespectful towards Yen Mah and her siblings. Yen Mah s Father is an extremely busy man
who neglects her at desperate times, and however he also is encouraging and supportive on some
occasions. Aunt Baba is the one who loves Yen Mah and, she also has a nurturing character toward
Yen Mah, when she need someone by her side. Niang stepmother of Yen Mah, who neglects her for
breaking the rules irresponsibly, and has set highly unreasonable sets of rules inside the house.

He forgets his own children s names and also their birthday as well, even kept sending them
away. However he did support Yen Mah in her education and encouraged her to do her best till
she succeeded. Now, give me you date of birth? (p. 140) Yen Mah was disappointed, even her
own father does not even know when her birthday is, however he gives his own birthday to her,
for her to share the same birthday with her father. Where are you? Father asked (p. 34), everyone
in the entire house had either forgotten Yen Mah or neglected her first time going to school,
eventually she had been picked up and she received a map: Read this map of Shanghai and find
where you are and where you need to go. This way you will never get lost again (p. 34). This
shows that Father has a nurturing character. Father disregards Yen Mah s feelings and asks Big
Brother to GO fetch one of those ducklings we will have some fun tonight! (p.94), when an
accident had happened, Father does not apologize and does not make eye contact with Yen Mah but
neglects her instead and completely ignores

Medea Reflection
The common event made me think differently of Medea. This was through having different
actors/actresses reading the same part of the play where Medea speaks to Jason. By having
different actors/actresses reading the same scene from Medea, it allowed me to see what the
purpose of the play was as well as the personal lesson it taught me. The purpose of this play was to
see the emotions of Medeaand to validate her reason for murdering her two kids. The personal
lesson it taught me was to stick up for yourself no matter how bad your situation/circumstance is.
Also, this presentation allowed me to also appreciate the character Medea. Initially, I thought
Medea was evil, strange, and cold hearted, but after the common event, I learned that Medea

Child Beauty Pageants Good For Children
Child beauty pageants are good for children and for society. Child beauty pageants give kids a
chance to express themselves and ability to show their talent. Child beauty pageants are known
for kid under 16 years of age to join, and have fun. Pageants it s an appearance that requires girls
to dress up and perform like pint size adults, complete with fake hair, spray tans, full makeup,
ornate costumes and even artificial teeth (known as flippers) (Healy). Maybe because of this
reason, children tend to be more motivate; therefore, children like to dress up and some children
like to dress up like adults. This is a good opportunity for children to feel how it is to dress like an
adult. Some parent report that their childseems to have more confident and they love dressing up
for the contest. Children are energetic and they love about beauty pageants is they get to travel.
Child beauty pageants help children be in shape because in order to fit in any costume, the
parent wants their kid to look as thin and in shape as possible. This is a good opportunity for
children, and it s good to force kid to be in shape at such an early age. Children can learn that by
being in shape can have many benefits as they get older.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sometimes, children like to participate in contest because they wanted to get prizes, and it s
good to travel the world, letting other people know who they are. They can begin to do charity
work and can get as much as benefits they can get. Pageants proved to be both a negative and
positive influence depending on their surroundings. Pageants that regulate make up usage,
sexuality and competition are recognized to be great experiences for children (Nussbaum). Not
only kid can win prizes and award, but they can also get all the experience that they will never get
to have. Child beauty pageants help children explore their inner self and be more

The Speed Force
Next in the long, tiresome quest for knowledge of The Flash, I decided to research The Speed
Force, because it will make it easier to understand the answers to the rest of my questions. The
Speed Force is the extra dimensional energy that once powered all of the Flashes superhuman
abilities. It is unknown to the people of the DC universewhere the Speed Force comes from, to
them it is a great and powerful force that affects everything. The Speed force can be used as a
way of transportation, a source of power or knowledge. Unfortunately, only some of the
speedsters are able to access it, for example Jay Garrick could not access the Speed Force later in
life, for Hermes did not have the authority to give him access to it. On the other hand,... Show more

Rose More states in her article 14 Things You Need To Know About Flashpoint (and The Flash
Season 3) (2016) Flashpoint was a huge crossover event that took place in 2011, involving every
single comic title that DC had out for sale at the time. The Flash (Barry Allen) was the central
character, but most of the other major DC super heroes were heavily involved, the repercussions
of Flashpoint affected every single character in the DC universe. After Flashpoint ended, DC
cancelled every single title, then relaunched their entire comic book universe. The new relaunch
of the company was named the New 52 , after the 52 new series that debuted in the early fall of
2011, and the 52 Earths that were in the new DC universe. As such, Flashpoint is one of the most
important events in the DC universe, wiping out all previous events, then allowing the comic
giant to effectively start from scratch. After finding out why they did it, I became curious. How
DC Comics pulled off this big stunt? They were able to completely trash all of their current work
that they were running, and not only did no one blink an eye, but they were very excited. It
definitely wasn t a hard thing to find out how they did it. After typing in Flashpoint into google the
computer screen is flooded with different people s opinions of the

An Article On The Good News
Are you feeling stuck or paralyzed in your life or business? Do you spend way too much time on
the internet, reading your email, drinking coffee or the equivalent because you just can t focus on
work? The fact is that many people are slackers and drifters, with mediocre lives...
The good news is that in the teleconference series on The Missing Link to Success, we look at the
five components that I have found are central to creating a prosperous life. Here s the formula:
PASSION + PURPOSE + POSITION + PRODUCTIVITY + PEACE OF MIND = PROSPERITY
As well as the article called The Missing Link to Success, which provides an overview of the
whole series, there is an article for each of these Five Ps , so look for them wherever you found
this article! I m going to assume you ve read the summary article plus the articles on Passion,
Purpose and Position, because each components builds on the previous ones. Once you have reset
the first three Ps, you are ready to improve your capacity to be PRODUCTIVE.
What does this mean? Why is it important to be productive? The main dictionary definition of
productive is: yielding favorable or useful results; being constructive; effective in achieving
specified results. (There are also specialized meanings in economics, medicine and linguistics, but
the main meanings will do.)
In work terms, productivity means being able to focus on your assigned (or assumed) tasks, and to
accomplish what you set out to do... whether as part of your job,

Essay The Use of Symbolism in the Film The Piano
Screen and Visual images are important in the film; The Piano directed by Jane Campion. The
screen and visual images are represented by Motifs. They are related to the dominating characters
which makes them important.
Firstly, Fingers as signifiers. The films very first image is a point of view shot looking through
Ada s fingers as if they frame her world. They are signifiers of expressiveness. Ada is mute and
her fingers are her tools of communication. She communicates using sign language with her fingers.
Ada also uses her fingers to play the piano. Without her fingers, Ada would not be able to continue
with her passion. Fingers are the chosen means of her affectionate sex play when she caresses her
husband, and Baine s fingers a hole ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He certainly identifies the piano with Ada. He strokes it and dusts it while naked, he tries to pry
into its secrets like a lover. Ada even snaps the lid shut on his fingers when they stray into its
recesses. It becomes the bargaining tool in their growing love affair and when she sends him her
love note it is written on a piano key. At the end, the piano is considered a coffin and Ada throws
it overboard of the Maori canoe, to get rid of her past. To start a new life.
Clothes also are important motifs. They are signifiers of Ada s restricted life and of her potentiality
for sexual expressiveness. The clothes represent Ada s time in life.
At times, her bonnets and skirts are heavy and encumbering, signs of the manner in which Victorian
women were held in tight to constrained social roles.
Later, they are easily removed when necessary at Baine s house. At the start of the film, Ada and
Flora look like peas from the same pod with their identical clothes, in Ada s case showing a quiet,
dark power. More positively, her petticoat becomes a tent for her and her daughter on the beach.
When Flora shifts allegiances, she takes to wearing angel s wings, a gift from the parson s
daughters, and a sign that she is now being judgemental of her Mother s sins.

Animal Testing Should Not Be Banned
Picture yourself applying your favorite make up or taking medicine prescribed to you by your
doctor, and ask yourself, how do you know it s safe? Have you ever wondered what goes in to
make sure that cosmetics and medicine isn t lethal? A majority of ensuring items such as medicine
and cosmetics are safe to use is done by testing the medicine and cosmetics on a multitude of
different kinds of animals (Abbott 1). Animal testingsaved many lives in the past ( Animal , par.7)
but as science bred new methods, much like in vitro, which uses human cells cultivated in a lab, the
potential for a replacement to animal testing arose (Abbott 1). Whether or not one is more effective
than the other has been a hot topic for years, and multiple studies... Show more content on

If the animal shows any irritation or damage, it is possible to decide whether or not the chemical is
permissible to use in consumer products. Experiments such as these are performed to test whether
or not items like mascara are safe for humans to use depending on the reaction of the animal (Abbott
1). Many of these experiments require hundreds of animals to get a clear result (Abbott 1). As
animal testing progressed throughout history, health organizations and industries started the
initiation of alternative tests, which involve a number of different approaches that do not involve
animals. Finding alternatives to testing with animals wasn t a main priority for many, until the
European Union initiated a program called REACH, which stands for Registration, Evaluation and
Authorization of Chemicals (Abbott 1). This initiative required European countries to document the
30,000+ chemicals that are used in experiments to measure the safety of cosmetics and medications.
Issuing this initiative caused many agencies to become concerned with how much it would cost to
go through all of these animal tests and document each chemical (Abbott 1). Due to this reason,
many began to implement the new alternatives that were presented to many agencies. These
different types of alternatives all stem from in vitro procedures. In vitro testing uses cells that are
cultivated in a lab to form different tissues for scientists to test. For example, the different

  • 2. David Hume Morality Hume on Morality and Reason In book three of A Treatise of Human Nature, David Hume writes about the nature of morality and its connection to our faculty of reason. He argues that our moral evaluation is not based solely in reason, though still influenced by the conclusions reason produces. In this essay, I will explain Hume s argument against reason as the base of our moral evaluation, and the assumptions on which it relies. This will be followed by explaining what, according to Hume, moral evaluation is based on and how it resolves the difficulties that a reason based moral system would raise. Finally, I will explain why Hume s moral requirements have some issues, particularly with objectivity, and explain why such a system is not actually... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In sufficiently large groups, there is enough diversity that it is nearly impossible to sympathize with the ideals and desires of everyone else. Of course, Hume says that one should sympathize with the general point of view , but, if that is the case, it needs to be determined how general this point of view should be. Sympathizing with just ones immediate family, friend group, or clique could fracture society into moral factions. Nearby societal groups may hold similar moral traits as virtuous; however, enough distance may result in incredible variance that would cause society to be difficult to govern at a large scale. This situation does not reduce moral relativism, but simply shifts it to a larger scale, resulting in morals relative to small groups. Rather than solving the problem of relativism, it eliminates any moral objectivity at all, since each group would decide on moral traits that work best as subjective to that group. In the opposite case, one may sympathize so generally that alternative views may be suppressed so as to avoid being insensitive to others. Such a scenario could result in an extensive hive mind in which nonconformists are viewed as unsympathetic or immoral, rather than merely being in a natural state of justified disagreement. This situation appears to be easily exploitable, since it promotes groupthink by means of a near universal objective morality. In both cases, the plausibility of the system is likely tarnished. If the narrow circle is too narrow, it will likely result in small scale collectives with almost no moral objectivity, but if the narrow circle is too large, then the system appears to be oppressive and entirely objective. There is the possibility of a middle ground for the size of the narrow circle, but finding and maintaining such a state seems entirely impractical and still ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A knowledge of comedic subgenres and conventions assists and informs one s understanding of the stage drama, Twelfth Night. A knowledge of genre and generic features helps to develop and broaden the meaning of many a play, and in particular, Twelfth Night. Duke Orsino is in love with Olivia. Viola falls in love with Orsino, while disguised as his pageboy, Cesario. Olivia falls in love with Cesario, causing an interesting love triangle, which is only resolved when Olivia falls in love with Viola s twin brother, Sebastian, and, at the last minute, Orsino decides that he actually loves Viola. Twelfth Night derives much of its comic force by satirising these lovers. For example, Orsino s flowery love poetry is made fun of, demonstrating that Orsino is more in love with the concept of being in love than his supposed beloveds, as demonstrated in Act One If music be the food of love, play on; Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting, the appetite may sicken, and so die. Also, by showing the particulars that govern how nobles engage in courtship, Shakespeare examines how characters play the game of love. Characters that claim to be of deep passions are often revealed as self absorbed, foolish, and misguided, as they fall victim to unfortunate love. Twelfth Night, considers the relationship between erotic desire and gender and examines more overt same sex desire, even as it steadily works its way towards the completion of the play, which ends with heterosexual couplings and marriage in a way for ... Throughout history, people have been trying to create an improved, fair, and equal system of justice, not only to better society in which one lives, but to also find a sense of meaning in what responsibilities people should hold within their civilizations in order to create this just way of living. As early as the Old Testament within the Bible, we see examples of how the Hebrews formed their own justice. This can be seen in the in text of the Ten Commandments which were written in a form of law. Laws were significant even in this basic form of context, such as the Ten Commandments, which offered the ideas of right and wrongdoings and the sin for violating others for one s own benefit. Many people, besides myself, have also contemplated this question, whether a utopian society could exist, and have put forth their own theories. Karl Marx and John Rawls are two thinkers that questioned what the theory of justice. Marx believed that history was always moving forward towards a utopian ending. Marx disliked injustice and declared this in his Communist Manifesto in 1846. His theory is centered on the idea that forms of society rise and fall as they develop and then became an obstacle for the development of human productive power and reality is governed by economic needs. This belief means that the present organization of society must be destroyed. To establish this new society, people must be organized and take up the struggle against the capitalists who take advantage of them. This struggle, according to Marx, will end in victory for the workers. However, Marx was unable to discover what laws and principles that would produce the just society in which he strived for. John Rawls was the second most important political thinker of his time. His main contribution to the idea of a civil society is his theory of justice. It had soon become a well known innovation in mainstream theatre. Due to its common ideology, it had also caused adventurous innovations to aspire as well. The reason for emphasizing realism was for realistic artists to create an illusion of everyday life onstage. A similar movement to realism that changed the ideology of theatre was naturalism; a movement that had originally began in France in the 19th century and spread throughout Europe in the 20th century. Annie Get Your Gun By Ethel Merman And Ray Middleton Anything you do, I can do better; I can do anything, better than you , in Annie Get Your Gun performed by Ethel Merman and Ray Middleton, is one of many examples that are still battled today on the topic of gender roles playing essentially to modern society. Historically, the relationship between female and male has almost always been unequal and oppressive; but, a feminist critic would aim to critique the nature of genderroles. In a feminist theory, it mainly focuses women s role as well as their social standing in a society. In today s society, women empower society to promote matriarchy whereas a female becomes the head of the family. Since the nineteenth century up until today in the twenty first century, society has made assumptions about female based on their gender. For instance, people often assume that men are strong and women are weak and that women cannot control their emotions, and that men are better at hunting, and that women belong in the kitchen. Oftentimes, books and movies can confirm such stereotypes of males as action heroes and women as housewives; however, through the characters of Katniss and Peeta in The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins tries to show her readers that these assumptions are false. Moreover, Katniss is an individual who breaks away from the typical gender stereotypes that one would assume while reading. • 10. Video Game Industry Has Undergone Significant Changes From... The video game industry has undergone significant changes from the early days of Atari. It now covers multiple sectors and generates more revenue than the movie and music industry. Last year total revenue in the U.S. eclipsed $23.5 billion, jumping 5% from a year earlier. A big part of that increase is due to a shift away from physical games towards digital software. In the past 5 years video gamepublishers have focused on expanding their direct to consumer channels through robust digital offerings. Meanwhile, the emergence of mobile gaming, eSports and virtual reality are poised to take the industry by storm in the next few years. With the industry growing at a rapid clip, it should be near the top of any investor s list. Video Game Industry For starters, the video game industry consists of three primary sectors; PC, console and mobile. PC gaming is currently the biggest moneymaker followed by console and mobile. However, mobile is poised to eclipse both PC and console sales in the next 5 years. Console gaming remains a blue chipper in the industry with limited upside or downside potential. Despite the booming popularity of PC games, computer sales continue to struggle. Names like HP (HPQ) and IBM (IBM) continue to point to a weak PC market as the source of its problems. Both stocks are down double digits in the past 12 months and should only be pursued as long term investments. Console gaming, on the other hand, has become so advanced that they are essentially ... • 11. Prohibition Of The Fourteenth Amendment Essay Introduction: 21st Amendment Following the passage of the 18th Amendment in 1919, which outlawed the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of alcohol, the United States entered a period of time now known as Prohibition (U.S. Const. amend. XVIII). Immediately following the passage of the 18th Amendment, consumption of alcohol, alcohol related injuries, and crime decreased (Schaeffer, 2011, p. 402). However, it did not take long for the governmentto realize that Prohibition came with many unintended consequences. According to Schaeffer (2011), state and local governments were ill prepared to handle the vast responsibilities of enforcing the law, which led to increased organized crime, corruption, and the failure of the law as a whole. 73% of Americans favored the repeal of the 18th Amendment in its entirety by the time the 21st Amendment was passed (Schaeffer, 2011, p. 408). The 21st Amendment was finally ratified in 1933 effectively ending prohibition. Aside from repealing the 18th Amendment, it also granted the states the right to regulate alcohol within their own borders and set a time limit for ratification of the law (U.S. Const. amend. XXI). Overall, this amendment decreased the powers of the federal government by delegating the authority over alcohol to the states. • 13. Development Of Artificial Minerals And Its Effects Development of Artificial Minerals From the start of civilization, man has demonstrated intriguing interest in natural crystals including gems (Kesler Simon, 2015). Later, man used natural minerals such as mica, diamond, corundum, and quartz for different applications including cutting abrasion, and electrical appliances among others (Kogel, 2006). During the Second World War, the demand for natural minerals in technical applications increased significantly and endangered the supply. However, this situation alongside technological advancements had a positive impact because it led to the birth of synthetic crystals (Goodman, 2013). In the synthetic crystal industry, the disciplines of geology, physics, chemistry, ceramics, and metallurgy merge to enable man create a wide variety of synthetic minerals (Degryse Elsen, 2003). Over the years, scientists have used different methods to develop synthetic minerals. The development of artificial minerals has many benefits as discussed in this report. Artificial minerals are minerals made in the laboratory (Jayaraman, 2000). Despite being artificial, these minerals have the same chemical, optical, and physical features associated with natural minerals (Degryse Elsen, 2003). Many people would agree when I say that this mineral is such a nice thing to look at, but few people actually know what it is made of and how it was formed. These precious minerals are composed of Carbon. The process to making this immaculate mineral is as following. First, you must bury Carbon dioxide deep into the earth; approximately, 100 miles deep. Second, you must heat the substance at a temperature of 2,200 degrees fahrenheit. Next, squeeze or tightly compact the substance under pressure of 725,000 pounds per square inch. • 23. Charles Engen Chapter Summary Charles Engen initiates us positively by encouraging us to think what if each church would begin to see itself as God s Missionary People. There is much to commend in his book as Engen asks the church to become in fact what it is by faith, a marvelous statement. Further insights come from statistical analysis, probing questions of eccesiology directed at questioning if we superimpose ourselves in areas of polity, form, structure or tradition upon the cultures we reach. I agree completely that making cosmetic changes or restructuring the denomination may not translate into crossing barriers from church to non church for the sake of the gospel. The church is compared with the noble works of the para church which forces us to think about how... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All three are terrible foes, and all three must be overcome if we would be saved. It is clear to me that some of the churches quoted by Engen have made great strides in technology and skill in planning and execution of management with wonderful music, yet are astray. We would smile if only Engen would have saturated himself with Godly quotes from within his bibliographic choices such as De Ridder as he speaks of (De Ridder, 1975) Matthew. • 25. Followers, Fans And Fever Pitch Looking at football from a perspective other than just the physical aspect of the game is such an interesting topic because you can truly begin to see how the game has changed socially and economically. The rules itself have stayed the same for many years, but the social aspect of the game has changed dramatically. As I will talk about, in my opinion, there are fewer fans that have a true connection with their club which relates to both of this weeks readings: Supporters, Followers, Fans and Fever Pitch. Connecting Supporters, Followers, Fans and Flaneurs by Richard Guilianotti and Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby, it is clear to understand what type of fan Hornby was according to Guilianotti. Hornby clearly displays a strong passion for his club, Arsenal, and based off the stories that he tells he would be classified as a supporter. A supporter has a long term personal and emotional investment in the club which results in a strong passion for anything involving their club (Guilianotti 33). I thought how the three pieces of writing connected were interesting because it seems to me today that in today s world you do not hear about people that are so strongly passionate about clubs and teams anymore like Hornby. But why? In my perspective there may be a multitude of reasons which include football not being as popular here in the United States and that football appears to be so socially based compared to what it used to be. How Hip Hop Connects With Many Different Real World Problem Chang writes in his book about how hip hop connects with many different real world problem going on politically and socially in many different places. He tells a story of a beaten and battered area of South Bronx. In this small area there was no law or order since many jobs were lost and most of what was left there were people of color from different parts of the world, including Puerto Rico and Jamaica. Due to the lack of protection Chang tells us that gangs were created as a means of protection from the junkies and other scavengers. Their way of dealing with things was very violent in nature, later on when more and more gangs started popping up they became territorial. They attacked other members who wore their colors on another gangs turf. South Bronx became a very dangerous place full of nothing but youthful gangs and gang related violence. Socially it was the lack of jobs and other necessities that led to the creation of hip hop. There became a treaty of sorts, although its terms weren t really discussed, but the gangs decided instead of focusing on violence and other things maybe they could focus on music to show the world their struggle. So all the different gangs started producing different strands of what we call hip hop. Each had different roots in it that all became mixed into a sort of melting pot. The four elements are DJing, B boying, MCing, and graffiti. The appeal of Hip Hop was how it brought to light the struggle that was going on in South Bronx and all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. A Country Using A Central Government Running a country using a central government has always been a topic of debate. How do a handful of people govern the free will of millions of others? The details of the word govern used in the previous statement have evolved into a seemingly endless quantity of laws, acts, policies, taxes, rules, parties, and on goes the list. Though government is growing evermore punctilious in it s outward appearance, these meticulously crafted rules or guidelines are the tools used by the government to promote the well being of the nation. Whether or not these tools are used effectively and frequently enough is a question that arises many different responses, often differing vastly. Personally, I believe the government does well in some aspects of the well being of our country but not so well in others. At the very basis of the federal government s involvement in privacy lie the Fourth and Fifth Amendments. The fourth amendment was composed with one sole purpose: to guarantee security in one s rightful domain. So long as a citizen is law abiding, this amendment provides legal privacy of their property. The Fifth Amendment guarantees that private property shall not be taken for use of the public, without just compensation. In regards to private property, these two Constitutional Amendments create a crude yet stout foundation to protect one s property. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although Keeling s research was conducted on carbon dioxide levels, other greenhouse gases have seen a large increase since the industrial revolution. Water vapor is the most copious greenhouse gas . Water vapor is only termed as a greenhouse gas for its strong correlation with the average worldwide temperature. Similar to Earth s temperature, water vapor levels have gradually been increasing, leading to an increase in precipitation. Another greenhouse gas is methane, a hydrocarbon gas. Methane levels are heavily influenced by human activities, such as rice cultivation and manure management. Methane is a deadlier gas to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide is, but carbon dioxide is more abundant in the atmosphere ( Global Climate Change ). As these greenhouse gases continue to permeate the atmosphere, they absorb heat normally radiated back toward space and release this heat to the surface of the Earth. Air pollution creates a variety of different effects on the environment. Many of air pollution s effects are visible: the loss of ice on ice caps and the premature flowering of plants and trees. Air pollution has a great effect on the weather forecast. The one type of wood I would stay away from is pressure treated lumber as the chemicals used to treat the wood can leach into the soil. Regular pressure treated lumber sold today has a mixture of chemicals applied to prevent the moist soil and weather from rotting it. • 43. Medea Reflection The common event made me think differently of Medea. This was through having different actors/actresses reading the same part of the play where Medea speaks to Jason. By having different actors/actresses reading the same scene from Medea, it allowed me to see what the purpose of the play was as well as the personal lesson it taught me. The purpose of this play was to see the emotions of Medeaand to validate her reason for murdering her two kids. The personal lesson it taught me was to stick up for yourself no matter how bad your situation/circumstance is. Also, this presentation allowed me to also appreciate the character Medea. • 45. The Speed Force Next in the long, tiresome quest for knowledge of The Flash, I decided to research The Speed Force, because it will make it easier to understand the answers to the rest of my questions. The Speed Force is the extra dimensional energy that once powered all of the Flashes superhuman abilities. It is unknown to the people of the DC universewhere the Speed Force comes from, to them it is a great and powerful force that affects everything. The Speed force can be used as a way of transportation, a source of power or knowledge. Unfortunately, only some of the speedsters are able to access it, for example Jay Garrick could not access the Speed Force later in life, for Hermes did not have the authority to give him access to it. On the other hand,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rose More states in her article 14 Things You Need To Know About Flashpoint (and The Flash Season 3) (2016) Flashpoint was a huge crossover event that took place in 2011, involving every single comic title that DC had out for sale at the time. The Flash (Barry Allen) was the central character, but most of the other major DC super heroes were heavily involved, the repercussions of Flashpoint affected every single character in the DC universe. After Flashpoint ended, DC cancelled every single title, then relaunched their entire comic book universe. The new relaunch of the company was named the New 52 , after the 52 new series that debuted in the early fall of 2011, and the 52 Earths that were in the new DC universe. As such, Flashpoint is one of the most important events in the DC universe, wiping out all previous events, then allowing the comic giant to effectively start from scratch. After finding out why they did it, I became curious. How DC Comics pulled off this big stunt? They were able to completely trash all of their current work that they were running, and not only did no one blink an eye, but they were very excited. It definitely wasn t a hard thing to find out how they did it. After typing in Flashpoint into google the computer screen is flooded with different people s opinions of the ... • 47. Essay The Use of Symbolism in the Film The Piano Screen and Visual images are important in the film; The Piano directed by Jane Campion. The screen and visual images are represented by Motifs. They are related to the dominating characters which makes them important. Firstly, Fingers as signifiers. The films very first image is a point of view shot looking through Ada s fingers as if they frame her world. They are signifiers of expressiveness. Ada is mute and her fingers are her tools of communication. She communicates using sign language with her fingers. Ada also uses her fingers to play the piano. Without her fingers, Ada would not be able to continue with her passion. Fingers are the chosen means of her affectionate sex play when she caresses her husband, and Baine s fingers a hole ... At the end, the piano is considered a coffin and Ada throws it overboard of the Maori canoe, to get rid of her past. To start a new life. Clothes also are important motifs. They are signifiers of Ada s restricted life and of her potentiality for sexual expressiveness. The clothes represent Ada s time in life. At times, her bonnets and skirts are heavy and encumbering, signs of the manner in which Victorian women were held in tight to constrained social roles. Later, they are easily removed when necessary at Baine s house. At the start of the film, Ada and Flora look like peas from the same pod with their identical clothes, in Ada s case showing a quiet, dark power. More positively, her petticoat becomes a tent for her and her daughter on the beach. When Flora shifts allegiances, she takes to wearing angel s wings, a gift from the parson s daughters, and a sign that she is now being judgemental of her Mother s sins. Baines and Stewart, ... • 48. Animal Testing Should Not Be Banned Picture yourself applying your favorite make up or taking medicine prescribed to you by your doctor, and ask yourself, how do you know it s safe? Have you ever wondered what goes in to make sure that cosmetics and medicine isn t lethal? A majority of ensuring items such as medicine and cosmetics are safe to use is done by testing the medicine and cosmetics on a multitude of different kinds of animals (Abbott 1). Animal testingsaved many lives in the past ( Animal , par.7) but as science bred new methods, much like in vitro, which uses human cells cultivated in a lab, the potential for a replacement to animal testing arose (Abbott 1). Whether or not one is more effective than the other has been a hot topic for years, and multiple studies... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the animal shows any irritation or damage, it is possible to decide whether or not the chemical is permissible to use in consumer products. Experiments such as these are performed to test whether or not items like mascara are safe for humans to use depending on the reaction of the animal (Abbott 1). Many of these experiments require hundreds of animals to get a clear result (Abbott 1). As animal testing progressed throughout history, health organizations and industries started the initiation of alternative tests, which involve a number of different approaches that do not involve animals. Finding alternatives to testing with animals wasn t a main priority for many, until the European Union initiated a program called REACH, which stands for Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (Abbott 1). This initiative required European countries to document the 30,000+ chemicals that are used in experiments to measure the safety of cosmetics and medications. Issuing this initiative caused many agencies to become concerned with how much it would cost to go through all of these animal tests and document each chemical (Abbott 1). Due to this reason, many began to implement the new alternatives that were presented to many agencies. These different types of alternatives all stem from in vitro procedures. In vitro testing uses cells that are cultivated in a lab to form different tissues for scientists to test. For example, the different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
