Dbq Barbarians Essay
Barbarians was a nickname given by the Romans to the various Germanic tribes, the settled
Gauls, and the raiding Huns because of their ferocious way of invading other tribes and empires.
Barbarians is a word given to a human who is perceived to be either uncivilized or primitive. The
barbarians during this ancient time frame, were able to conquer and defeat many empires for
many years because of their very strong and inhumane use of brute force to get the job done and
strike fear in peoples minds. One of the most well known barbaric tribes was the Mongols from
China, led by the powerful Genghis Kong. Accoring to Document A, Genghis Kong and his army
conquered the largest amount of land of any world conquest from the time period. They covered

The Juvenile Justice System Is The Primary System Used
The Juvenile Justice System is the primary system used to handle youth who are convicted of
criminal offenses. It is just over 100 years old. Over time it has gone through several changes and
its unlikely to disappear anytime soon. We as Americans are still trying to find different ways to
approach juvenile justice vs. approaching it as adult justice. Throughout most of history, young
adults and or children did not have a separate status between juvenile and adults. Once you
reached the ages of 5 or 6, you became apart of the adult society. There was no separate system for
dealing with youth offenders. In the early 1800s, problems with how to deal with youth offenders
began to come about due to society going through economical... Show more content on

All juveniles under the age of 16 could be handled by the court. Between 1960s and the 1980s,
attention and speculation began to rise about the concern of the juvenile delinquency and court
system. During this time, this era was characterized by distinctly harsh punishments for youths.
They were also wanting to focus on providing minors with due process and legal counsel in court.
Even though they were trying to provide help to youth offenders, criticism during this time, focused
on racial discrimination, gender disparities and discrimination towards children with mental health
problems or learning disabilities. Through out the years, crime rates rose and the misrepresentation
from the media began around the 1960s and went through the 1980s. Today in America, no
population poses a larger threat to public safety than juvenile offenders. Juvenile justice system deal
with three types of case; Delinquents, status offenders, neglected, abused or dependent youth. Over
the years, many states have established family courts to deal with offenders and cases with the
status of neglect. Throughout the years, there has always been some type of tension between police
and young offenders. In my personal opinion, I think this comes from the music that the youth
listens to. Most state statues provide some guidance for arrest procedures. As an officer, you have
the discretion in deciding when to arrest juvenile offenders.

The Just Exercise of Political Power
The just exercise of political power is conceived of as resting upon constitutional principles.
Constitutional principles are a position from which we operate justly. However, what constitutes as
just? Throughout history political power derived from many historical foundations that were
deemed just based on the society that upheld those principles. This notion is evident throughout the
development of constitutional doctrines in Greek democracy, Aristotle s political theory, Roman
Republicanism, and English Constitutionalism.
Due to society, cultural diversity troubles the mode of governess. This is because at times there are
circumstances where cultural ideologies oppress other cultures and limit the concept of a democratic

What Aristotle called Polity was based on political power and the best practical government. This
notion differed from Ancient Greek democracy.
During the 4th Century B.C, Aristotle rose as a critic of direct democracy based on two
grounds: are all individuals qualified to govern? Should we select a few individuals who are fit
for leadership? Bernard Crick writes, while democracy was for him a necessary condition for
good government, it was far from a sufficient condition (Crick 1). Aristotle had a negative
outlook on human nature. This led to his belief on how a government system should rule and the
dismissal of a direct democracy. Similarly to Ancients, Aristotle believed that a direct democracy
would only crumble. For this reason, he introduced Checks and balances . Checks and balances
gave limited power to each branch of power and to the people. He identified his a polity by
representative government, balanced government, and a mixed government. Representative
government is one ruled by a leader . And yet, he questioned the idea of placing trust in the hands
of the uneducated, incompetent. More importantly, he believed that in order to be a leader, one
must meet the five characteristics to be considered a leader . The characteristics required:
intelligence, knowledge, experience, wisdom, and virtue. It was especially important for one to
attain wisdom because that is the end result of knowledge

The Middle age or Medieval period lasted from the 5th to the 15th century. The medieval period

The Libation Bearers and Hamlet
The Libation Bearers and Hamlet
Many of Shakespeare s plays draw from classical Greek themes, plot and metaphors. The tragedies
of Sophocles, Aeschylus, Euripides and Homer have themes like royal murders, assassinations by
near relatives, the supernatural, ghostly visits, and vengeful spirits of the dead themes which
reappear in Shakespeare s tragedies with a difference.
Shakespeare s tragic hero Hamlet and Aeschylus s Orestes have a great deal in common. Both the
plays are set in a time when the society is going through transition. In Orestia gods are changing.
Furies turn into Eumenides or the Pacified Ones. Social and political norms are changing. The old
laws of revenge and retribution have to be re established. Similarly Hamlet s ... Show more content

Both the tragic heroes are troubled by supernatural visits and nightmares. Both have ethical and
moral dilemmas , nevertheless, Hamlet is much more scholarly and agonized than Orestes who
better fits in the robe of a Classical Greek revenge hero.
Jessica Price observes:
An onslaught of tragic elements appear in both Hamlet and The Oresteia. Hamlet s hamartia in
William Shakespeare s Hamlet leads to his succumbing to corruption and his eventual demise. In
The Oresteia by Aeschylus, Orestes hamartia takes a slightly different course, causing him to
stumble, but not completely fall.
While Orestes never indulges in long existential speeches or philosophical thinking Hamlet
delays the action in his endless quest for a right answer. Hamlet is not faced with the terrible
commitment of killing his own mother. He has to kill his uncle to whom one is not as dearly
related as a son is to his mother. Still he does not consider it right to kill his uncle on an
apparitions command. He puts him to test to affirm what his father s ghost said. He arranges a
play based on the actual event of king s murder to be performed before his uncle and mother and
note their responses to it. Even after his suspicion is validated he cannot bring himself round to kill
his uncle. He wants to heal what has been hurt, make right what is wrong, do the justice but deep
inside he does not want to kill Claudius. Orestes, on the other hand, right

Character Analysis Of Babamukuru In Nervous Conditions
In the story, Nervous Conditions, Babamukuru is Tambu, the main character s, uncle. He is an
essential character because his reactions dictate how all the other character s act and behave. He is
the father of two of the characters and the husband to another character, but always asserts himself
in everyone s life, because of his duty to the immediate and extended family. He is the disciplinarian
and parental figure to many of the characters. He is tough and not loveable to his kids, he
especially makes known his disappointment in his daughter. He acts more as if he is running a
business than raising his families status and overcome severe poverty. Babamukuru is the

He is never wrong and presents himself as very self righteous.
In this book, bias towards women is obvious. It is one of the main themes and is not hard to find.
Babmukuru at first suggests that Nhamo, Tambu s brother, be educated instead of Tambu
because he is a boy and she is a girl but after years at this school Nhamo has changed in a bad way
and rejects his family and learns a native language until eventually, he dies in a hospital away
from his family. Only then does Babmukuru offer Tambu to take the place of Nhamo and attend
the missionary school by his house. He becomes a prime example of discrimination in women s
education. He yieldingly lets Tambu go to a new school to higher her education even after she
received a scholarship. Babmukuru s alpha male dominance over all the other characters are,
according to him, his duty, but it ends up being crippling for the women s spirits. Another
example of this gender issue is when Tambu is visiting her family at the mission and discover
that her aunt serves her uncle dinner and lets him finish eating before serving herself or her
children. The main character, Tambu, is trying to find herself and her own voice but has a male
figure around her that doesn t accept her growth because he thinks everything should be done to
his approval and she is contradicting it. Also, Tambu s father doesn t like that she is going to
school to get an education because once she gets married her wealth will go to

Cereal at the Store Study
Introduction Breakfast cereal is a commonly eaten food in the United States. According to the
website CEEREAL of the European breakfast cereal Association, the first ever cereal was
granola which was invented by James Caleb Jackson in 1863 who was the operator of the
Jackson Sanitarian in the state of New York (Ceereal). It would not catch on due to the long prep
time needed to make the cereal edible. In 1889 two brothers W.K. Kellogg, and his brother, Dr.

location and the surrounding neighborhoods. This store can cater to traditional working class
urbanites to the affluent suburbanite who works downtown and stop at this location to buy
groceries before going home. Given this diverse clientele I concluded this store would be a good
store to observe. When I enter the store the first thing I did was walk towards the cereal Aisle
which is in the middle of the store. Once I was in the cereal aisle, I would notice that besides
cereal the also contained other breakfast foods such as Pop Tarts, breakfast bars, and oatmeal. The
aisle also contained products to make other breakfast food such as an egg poacher and a
breakfast sandwich maker. Finally I would observe that the area also was where the Tea and hot
chocolate is located which usually complement breakfast. I would next focus on the Cereal Aisle
I would first discover how the cereal was arranged. At this location the cereal was arranged
according to brands. One section of the aisle was dedicated to Kellogg products such as raisin brand

Reasons Why Guns Should Be Banned
Violence is out of control, and guns are a major cause Should Guns Be Banned? introduction. This
is a belief many Americans now share. This belief is fueling a nationwide movement that could
result in a total prohibition on private gun ownership in the near future. Just imagine if every
handgun owner was made to dispose of their gun, how much more peaceful the U. S. or rather the
world would be? Ownership of private guns is being banned one step at a time.
The recently enacted Brady Bill mandates a national five day waiting period and background check
for all handgun purchases (Wollstein par. 1). Maryland has just passed a law that requires a state
license for any handgun purchase and limits purchases to one per month. Also, President Clinton
banned the importation of most foreign made, semiautomatic rifles (Reynolds 1). On February 28,
1994, Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen announced that several 12 gauge semiautomatic shotguns
were being reclassified in the same category as machine guns (Wollstein par. ). The Bureau of
Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms simultaneously announced that they would trace the owners of
18,000 of these shotguns and order them to be fingerprinted and to register their guns with the ATF
within 30 days or face ten years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine (Wollstein par. 4). On the same
day that semiautomatic shotguns were reclassified, Senator Howard Metzenbaum introduced
legislation that would require all handgun owners to get a federal license, pass a safety test, and
register their weapons with police (Reynolds 3).
Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan has proposed legislation that would raise the tax on some
ammunition up to 10,000 percent. The price of a single box of Winchester 9 millimeter hollow
tipped cartridges would increase to $15,000( ). Would banning guns reduce crime? According to
recent polls, most Americans now support gun licensing as a way to reduce crime. Crime has
certainly been increasing particularly violent crime. Between 1960 and 1980, robberies nationwide
increased by 300 percent. In the same period, both the number of handguns and the national murder
rate doubled (Wollstein par. ). But is the proliferation of guns the cause of violence or a response to
violence?

The United States Vs. The Treaty Of Versailles
The United States vs. the Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles was a peace settlement between Germany and the Allied Powers signed
on June 28, 1919. The Treaty of Versailles officially ended World War 1. However, since the
conditions in the treaty were so punitive towards Germany many believe that it was also partly
responsible for starting World War 2. Before the treaty was signed President Woodrow Wilsonand
his opponent in congress, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge debated over the membership in the League
of Nations and about the mortality of the treaty. Many debated that the United States should have
signed the Treaty of Versaillesand joined the League of Nations while others oppose both the treaty
and the alliance. I believe that the United States did the right thing by rejecting the Treaty of
Versailles, and avoiding the entangling commitments overseas which the alliance would have
brought upon us.
Correspondingly, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge also held an anti Versailles position. Senator Lodge
viewed the treaty as suspicious and stated more than once that a matter this important should not be
rushed. My one desire is that not only the Senate, which is charged with responsibility, but that the
press and the people of the country should investigate every proposal with the utmost thoroughness
and weigh them all carefully before they make up their minds (Document 1). Lodge acknowledges
that treaties are long and serious documents pertaining to the nation and

Visual Illusions Are A Phenomena That Arise From...
Visual illusions are a phenomena that arise from misperception of the observed object s
properties. Visual illusions allow us to study the difference between the objective reality and our
interpretation of the perceived visual stimuli or the way our brains process visual information, in
order to develop a general understanding of our visual system (Carrasco, 1986); In spite of the
relevance of this issue, general concensus is yet to be reached on the origin of such phenomena
One representation is the Muller Lyer (1889) Illusion (MLI), a geometric size illusion classically
represented by modified perception of the length of a line, influenced by arrowheads or arrowtails
on its endpoints (Zeman et al, 2014). The MLI has been widely used attempting to explain the
underlying mechanism behind geometrical illusions; Gregory (1966) attributed the illusion to the
misapplied size constancy scaling influenced by depth cues; Carrasco (1986), argued that visual
channels are orientation and spatial frequency specific after presenting the MLI to eight participants
and observing a reduction on the illusion after exposure to a low spatial frequency grid. Although
evidence questioning this claim has been presented in many studies (Carlson, Moeller, Anderson,
1984) (GarcГa Garibay De Lafuente, 2015) (Zeman et al, 2014) (Zeman A. , Obst, Brooks, Rich,
2013) where the illusion persists in images absent of low spatial frequencies and has been assessed

A FARMER S PLIGHT: AN ANALYSIS OF THE HACIENDA LUISITA CONTROVERSY

INTRODUCTION
This paper aims to compare Rousseau s idea in his work Discourse on Inequality to the non ending
controversy regarding Hacienda Luisita, while the aim of Rousseau s Discourse is to examine the
foundations of inequality among men, and to determine whether this inequality is authorized by
natural law.
Inequality has always been a never ending trend topic in the Philippines, and we can see that there
is still widespread inequality throughout the country today, defined in sociology as the existence of
unequal opportunities and rewards for different social positions or statuses within a group or

We can see political inequality through the exploitation of the poor, which is represented by the
Farmers, by the rich, represented by the Cojuangco Aquino clan; this exploitation is present because
of the rivalry in property between the two groups.
The Cojuangcos, who owns the vast 6,000 hectare property, are the ones who control the people
who work and live there. The wealth that they amass from its produce gives them the power to hold
those who are deeply indebted to them in the palm of their hands.
The lack of the workers ability to finance and sustain their fight for the right to own the land that
they and their ancestors were cultivating continues to be the main problem. The unjust working
conditions has been an issue for years, but had these landlords put their feet in the workers shoes,
even for just a while, they would have heard and given the farmers what they were asking for a
long time ago.
To avoid the conflict, the Cojuangcos must lend an ear and open their eyes to what the workers are
saying, and perhaps both parties involved would be able to communicate and gain benefits

Working With Nursing And Healthcare Leadership
Throughout this communication course I have learned and attempted to apply new skills in
communication and group interactions. I have collaborated with nursing and healthcare
leadership professionals on a project to improve communication and health outcomes for a
specific population. As our group has formed and developed during this quarter, I have
identified strengths and weaknesses in my ability to work within a group. The four stages of a
group, as described by Connery and Vohs (2006) will be discussed as they pertained to my
perception of the group process and outcomes this quarter. My communication strengths,
weaknesses, and my adoption of the informal roles outlined by Connery and Vohs (2006) with
regard to group work will be analyzed as well as my plan for utilizing my strengths and
addressing my weaknesses for future interactions and group work. Group Phases During our
Forming phase, as described by Connery and Vohs (2006), we spent a little time getting to know
each other, but we stuck to the basics like names, work schedules and phone numbers. After these
initial introductions, we assigned the roles of coordinator and recorder and discussed some group
norms that we wanted to adopt for the quarter. We then started discussing the focus of our group
work and trying to devise a plan for how we will move through the quarter. I think it is a normal
reaction whenever anyone is meeting or working with someone for the first time to tend to be more

Walden Tone
Walden Tone The tone of the excerpt from Walden is critical of the way the American
population lives. This is seen by Thoreau s comparisons of the American lifestyle to people or
beings that do not live logically, such as the greedy man who was turned into an ant by Zeus in
one of Aesop s fables, or the pygmies and the cranes that fought a war until the pygmy population
was decimated. He states in the excerpt that he wanted to . . . live so sturdily and Spartan like as
to put to rout all that is not life, (Thoreau, 2). This quotation emphasizes that the American people
are not able to truly live life since they tend to live in extravagant excess. Thoreau moves from
American excess to the railroad swiftly. This could in part be to mirror... Show more content on

Thoreau criticizes his fellow humans when he states that they have somewhat hastily concluded
that it is the chief end of man here to glorify God and enjoy him forever, (Thoreau, 2). The
indicated quotation shows that Thoreau believes that his fellow citizens have not actually taken
the time to look at all the facts of life in order to make an educated decision about what life is for.
Thoreau intends to tell the world what life is about since he believes that many humans are in a
strange uncertainty about it, whether it is of the devil or of God, (Thoreau, 2). If people are
uncertain about who created life, Thoreau suggests that they take away all the superficial
aspects of it and examine its bare bones. However, many people wish to live extravagantly and
do not know who or what created life, nor do they wish to give up their material possessions to
find out. In the event that people did discern what life was and who created it, Thoreau would not
have to be critical of them as they would live the way he did and they would not have anything that
was not necessary for their survival, which would itself make them happy. Thus, if humankind cared
more about the basics of life rather than its extravagance, Thoreau might not have felt the need to
disapprove of

make requests for military support during his official visit, there is great evidence that shows he did
in private. On May 20, 1950, there was a large explosion at a harbor in South Amboy, New Jersey.
The explosion involved antitank and antipersonnel mines that the Pakistani Army had purchased

Pakistan was displayed when the Truman Administration requested that Pakistan join the UN

Visible Minority And Immigrant Racism
Visible Minority and Immigrant Racism in the Canadian Work Environment
In the ideal world, every person is treated equally in the workplace whether it be hiring, promotion,
assignments or termination. However in reality, racial discrimination and harassment remain
pervasive in the workplace, with 1 in 4 visible minority workers who reported that they had
experienced racial harassment or discrimination in the workplace [3]. In this essay, I will be
discussing the social history of racism in the workplace, the nature of racism in the labour force,
motives and factors, immigration policies, temporary programs and exploitation of employment,
the de skilling of individuals and non recognition of foreign credentials, the social history of racism
in the workplace, racism in the sociological conflict theory paradigm, and finally, policy
recommendations to aimed to eliminate and decrease racism in the work environment. In the
Canadian work environment, racism exists as a complex and multidimensional inequality for
visible minorities and immigrants, and can be examined socially, economically and politically using

The focus for this project will be to demonstrate a comprehensive product costing effort on pecans

Although the product itself is purchased from various producers across the United States and
Mexico (Edgar, 2015), Sanfilippo s manufacturing site for its pecan products demonstrates a well
informed decision making choice.
As a seasonally based product capable of being stored for up to 5 years based on storage conditions,
Sanfilippo could have realistically chosen any location within the US. After beginning its pecan
location in a small store front in Chicago (Sanfilippo, 2012), the company expanded in 1991 to
multiple locations strategic to the product produced. The Selma, Texas location used primarily to
produce pecans supports storage of the in shell product in an environmentally stable geographic
location (Sanfilippo, 2016). The small suburban community meets many of the most common
location decision making criteria with low labor and transportation costs, energy costs, low union
labor participation impacting labor and management costs (Kalantari, 2013).
Sanfilippo Product Pricing
When comparing a product to its competitors, it is desirable to use product cost and other
comparative factors that may feed into its stability in the marketplace. One of the primary
competitors for Sanfilippo s Fisher Pecan line is Diamond Pecans (Edgar, 2015). For a product

Postnatal Massage Therapy Research Paper
This article focuses on postnatal massage therapy and how it can be of enormous benefit to the new
mother. We will look at the top benefits, some traditional methods to administer post natal massage,
and also some precautions to consider.
Some pregnant mothers experience an easy birth while others go through a prolonged and difficult
process with many hours of labour. One thing is absolutely for certain, after the delivery process,
new mothers are tired or even exhausted. And then having to breastfeed and nurse a newborn
several times per night can add to the exhaustion.
The new mother today does not have much time to relax and rest during her postnatal confinement
period at home. Many mothers also need to return to work quickly which for some means facing
additional pressure to lose weight in order ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This treatment involves the use of massage oil applied to the stomach and a stomach wrap called
a bengkung made up of a cotton cloth several metres long. The bengkung is used to wrap the body
in order to push up the uterus, clear water retention, relieve wind and spasms, shrink the stomach
and help to reduce weight. Post natal massage is usually done within the privacy of one s home.
For a mother who has delivered her baby naturally, it is generally considered safe to go proceed
with postnatal massage. For those that delivered by caesarean, be sure to consult with your doctor
or professional massage therapist first. Most often it is recommended to wait a few weeks before
proceeding with post natal massage therapy after caesarean birth.
Postnatal massage therapy is widely practiced and has numerous benefits for the new mother. If

Forgiveness In The Sunflower Analysis
Forgiveness There is an abundance of ways that one might interpret forgiveness. Psychologists
might explain it as a conscious decision to pardon the actions of those who ve done wrong.
Religious people might identify it as an attribute that we should all have. Though there are many
ways in which forgiveness is seen, they all conclude that it leads people towards happiness and
peace. In Simon Wiesenthals book The Sunflower, forgivenessis an important concept. Forgiveness
is shown as an important concept to the story as it makes the reader questionthe forgiver s role, the
importance of forgiveness, and the reason people ask for forgiveness. In The Sunflower by Simon
Wiesenthal, he shares his story of when a dying Nazi soldier asked him for forgiveness. After that
incident, Wiesenthal goes on a journey through life trying to figure out if his actions were right in
not forgiving the soldier.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Going about life with a forgiving attitude tends to make us happier and more at peace. In The
Sunflower, forgiveness is the main and most important concept. Karl asks for forgiveness from
Simon on his actions and Simon goes through the rest of his life pondering whether or not what
he did was right and if he should try and forgive himself for what he did. After talking to Bolek,
Simon states, I became less and less certain as to whether I had acted rightly (Wiesenthal 83). This
statement shows how Simon does not know whether what he did was right and how every person
he talked to about his situation impacted his opinions. Forgiveness is such an important concept
that it makes Wiesenthal ponder about his actions and ask for input from multiple different people.
He felt as if he cannot be at peace until he comes to terms with his actions. This shows that
forgiveness is an extremely important concept in both life and The Sunflower as it can lead us onto
different paths and make us question our views and

Short-Term Memory Experience
The class was asked to do experiments on five different people who I know. We were asked to
test their short term memory. I thought it would be easy for my subjects to remember just 10
words. I wanted to see if age or education can change their short term memory outcome. On TV,
there is a reality game show Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader , well my son is in the fifth
grade. We sat at the kitchen table, I read aloud the words that were on the high value list. Then I
asked him to write the words that he could remember me saying. Then an hour later, I did the
next set of 10 words from the medium value list, then the low value list of words an hour or so
after. With my husband, I did the same thing has I did with my son. We sat at the table

The Industrial Revolution And The Evolution Of The...
Katie Rose Knoblock Professor Taylor AMH 2010 O1M 6 November 2017 Evolution of the
Industrial Revolution Many factories did this by targeting women and children as they could be
paid less than men with no repercussions. The workers that were hired to these positions,
especially women, were subject to some very harsh work conditions. They were subject to
terrible work environments including buildings called sweatshops, which were poorly lit and
ventilated for maximum productivity. They were forced to work in dangerous conditions where
a person could easily be maimed or even killed if they mishandled the equipment they used for
their work. It was not unheard of for the workers to be expected to work as much as 16 hours a
day under threats of being fired or even physically abused if they did not complete their work
with great speed. Even after all their effort in the workplace, it was not uncommon for a person
to be paid as little as a single dollar for their day s efforts. These poor working conditions gave
rise to labor unions in the 19th century to insure proper working conditions for all laborers. The
labor unions aided in workplace safety and fairness by using a large group of people to sway
greedy business owners in the right direction. The major advancement in the factory system
occurred in the early 20th century with what was called the assembly line. The assembly line
enabled a product being assembled to pass on a mechanized conveyor from one

Old Man and the Sea
There is never a simple key to any writer worth much attention, but in the case of Hemingway there
is something that looks so like a keyВ… that it cannot escape any informed and thoughtful reader s
notice (O Conner 153). Ernest Hemingway was one such author. Very rarely did he summarize
statements, therefore the only way to solve his puzzle was to take it apart and examine each
components. One of the hidden elements that the reader must analyzie closely is the parallel
between Santiago and JesusChrist. In the novel, The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway
creates connections between Santiago and Jesus Christ that adds religious coloration to the story.
Santiago can be compared to a Christ figure on the basis of his relationships ... Show more content

This later passage which details Santiago s painful climb up the hill to his shack, bearing the
mast of his boat on his shoulders is an allusion to Christ s last ascent (Wylder 91). William O
Conner believes The Old Man and the Sea can be classified as a Christian tragedyВ…especially
in several marked allusions to Christian symbolism, particularly of the crucifixion (O Connor
169). Following the example of Christ, he [Santiago] suffers unjustly and undergoes defeat. He
experiences his own type of crucifixion. But he accepts suffering, again following the model of
Christ (Auer 22). Carrying the mast (cross), Santiago struggles to his shack. At the shack,
Santiago goes to bed in a crucifixion pose: face down, arms out, palms up. He pulled the blanket
over his shoulders and then over his back and legs and he slept face down on the newspapers with
his arms out straight and the palms of his hands up (Hemingway 112). As a result of the precise
parallel between Santiago and Christ, the reader can infer that Santiago is Christ in disguise.
One critic Arvin Wells believes Santiago can be seen as a Christian saint (22). Wells concludes this
theory because Santiago has achieved the most difficult and saintly of all Christian virtues,
humility. There are reminiscences of Christianity present in the story sometimes as a symbol,
sometimes as direct allusion and sometimes merely as a

Religion and the legacy she hoped to leave her children
Ann Bradstreet was always very close with her father Thomas Dudley. Thomas Dudley wanted to
make sure she received a superior education and passed on his Puritan beliefs to her. Ann writes
that when she moved with her family to the new world, her heart rose in resistance towards this
new world and new manners . After I was convinced it was the way of God, I submitted to it and
joined the church at Boston (1). Unfortunately, Anne s daily life was hard because the rheumatic
fever she had as a child compromised her health and left her with frequent fatigue. Even so, she still
risked dying during childbirth which was a common issue at the time, and she did so eight times. ...

were true considering that she never saw any miracles. Ann wrote that she would be more
inclined to believe the Scriptures if she could see the miracles with her own eyes and took
pleasure in everyday life rather than how the future was written in the Scriptures. She wrote, that I
see, the vast frame of the heaven and the earth, the order of all things, night and day, summer and
winter, spring and autumn, the daily providing for this great household upon the earth, the
preserving and directing of all to its proper end (1). Anne regularly questioned her Puritan beliefs,

Verbal Short-Term Memory
General Topic and Hypothesis Verbal short term memory (STM) is better maintained when a
person has knowledge of the sounds and meanings of words presented. This semantic knowledge is
demonstrated by the impact of semantic manipulations (e.g. word perceptibility) and by
neuropsychological studies of word recall deficits. This can be explained either by redintegration or
languagebased accounts. Redintegration is the long term knowledge of lexical forms of words that
facilitate item reconstruction. Language based accounts suggest that STM is supported by
temporary activation of long term linguistic representations prior to recall. The present study
examines phoneme level errors to assess the predictions of the semantic binding hypothesis, which

The first experiment included participants categorizing spoken words based on either semantic or
phonological property, and the third experiment added the condition of categorization based on
perceptual property. Word properties combined with immediate serial recall (ISR) task were
matched with the type of categorization so that differences in ISR can be attributed to the encoding
condition. Experiment 3 was designed to retest whether semantic encoding resulted in better recall
than phonological encoding as in Experiment 1 and to test whether the semantic advantage
remained with the addition of a perceptual property, a high or low pitch, condition at encoding.
The same words used in Experiments 1 and 2 were used, but they were recombined to create a
third set of thirty words to test for the conditions of semantic categorization, phonological
categorization, or non linguistic pitch categorization. A total of 90 test lists in blocks of six words

categorization condition. Following the block of six words, participants participated in immediate

Undoubtedly, these wings represent the prominence of the Augurey bird in the book. The
Augurey bird, a magical bird whose cry is said to foretell the coming of rain, is the symbol of
Dephi Diggory in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. In an alternate universe, it was even her
title. Also on the cover is a rough nest, built like a robin s nest, and a child curled in the fetal
position, surveying the viewer with wide, vulnerable eyes. There are no direct nests in the text,
but the nest could easily represent a home and the safety a child needs as they grow. A nest is a
haven for baby birds, but at the same time it is their training base and it does not protect them from
the elements, which fits in with the story, particularly when the portrait of Albus Dumbledore says
to Harry, We cannot protect the young from harm... You re supposed to teach him how to meet life
(Thorne, 112). The wings attached to the nest may not only represent Delphi as the Augurey, but
they may also represent how Delphi, despite her ill intentions, gave Albus the power to fly above
the mundane life he lived for his first few years at Hogwarts. Lastly, the child in the nest mostly
likely represents Albus Potter, and not only him, but also his best friend Scorpius. Both of these
young boys have had unfortunate childhoods, and inwardly are curled in upon themselves to
protect themselves from further harm. Albus, like the child,

The economic landscape in Oman is continuously improving due to the development plans and
tighter regulation. Along with relatively low penetration levels compared to counterparts in the

Peace and political stability are basic preconditions to nurture the formation and growth of

Ancient Jews And Their Belief Of God
Ancient Jews and their Belief in God(s)
Throughout the centuries, the Jewish people have maintained their customs and religion. One of
the most common assumptions has been that the ancient Jews have always been monotheistic. Yet,
upon closer examination, this conventional wisdom is inaccurate. Ugaritic texts, archeological data,
and the Biblical narrative itself all demonstrate that the ancient Jews were not monotheistic,
contrary to what many believe. In fact, there is proof that they acknowledged and sometimes
worshipped other gods, as late as the seventh century CE. In order to grasp what this means,
there needs to be an understanding of who the ancient Jews were, who their neighbors were, and
what was worshipped at the time. To understand what the ancient Jews believed in, we first must
define who these ancient Jews were. The first mention of ancient Jews in history is in the year
1207 BCE. In the book, Ancient Inscriptions: Voices from the Biblical World, an Egyptian King
Merneptah tries to conquer many lands through his campaign to achieve greatness. He writes
about his conquests and mentions Israel by saying, Israel is laid to waste, his seed is no more.
Ronald Hendel, a Biblical scholar, cites this verse in his article, Israel among the Nations, and we
begin to see mention of the Jewish people in history. Up until this point, there is no historical
proof that a separate nation of Israel existed. This verse gives us evidence of the coexistence of
Israel and

The central role of enzymes is to function as biological catalysts. Since the fundamental tasks of a

The Problem Of Environmental Protection Essay
Theodore Roosevelt had once said, The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as
assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased, and not impaired in value . These
words have resonated since and have been an example as to why it is our duty as inhabitants of
this planet to provide protection to the ever so fragile environment. But what is Environmental
protection exactly? Well it is one of the most important, and expensive problems businesses and
society are facing today. Why you may ask? Since the industrial age all the countries around the
world have been burning an assortment of fuel to power factories, vehicles, heat homes, and even
to cook with and when these fuels are burned they emit carbon dioxide and various other
chemicals which over time add up and take a very long time to breakdown. As a result they trap
heat from the sun in the earth s atmosphere raising the global temperature and causing a domino
effect on the environment. Likewise companies produce hazardous waste and dump them illegally
in waters which kills vast amounts of marine life. Although laws are in place to protect the planet,
inventions are slowly being created to provide alternative sources of energy and agencies already
exist to protect the environment. However it is our duty as people in a society to act on our own by

and the measurements and design features of the school furniture they use (Yeats, 1997;
Panagiotopoulou et al., 2004).
As we noted earlier, furniture has a significant effect on human health. Thus, it is essential to use
anthropometric data to guide the design of school desks and chairs.
However, because anthropometric measures vary among nations and ethnic groups and change over
time as populations and their environmental conditions change.
As a result, the anthropometric data used in the design of the equipment used in Turkish higher
education are based on anthropometric data from other countries and thus do not represent the
average body measurements of the Turkish people (Kayis, 1988; Turgut et al., 2004).

Objective: 1 mark
(What is the purpose of this experiment?)
In this lab, spectrochemical technique was used to determine qualitively the product of a reaction.
The purpose was to learn what a SN1 reaction was with combining 2,5 dimethyl 2,5 hexanediol and
HCl and to learn how to use an infrared spectrum for analyzing the reaction. The infrared spectrum
determined the alcohol content present in the final product. If the IR of a molecule with an
alcohol is present, there will be an IR peak between 3400 and 3200 cm^ 1. However, if the
experiment was done successfully by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

1. Suggest at least one chemical reason why your percent yield is less than 100%. (Incomplete
reactions? Side reactions? Stability of reagents?)
Incomplete reactions could be a possible chemical reason to why the percent yield is less than
100%. During the procedure, the experiment might not have been mixed long enough for the Cl ion
to fully form.
2. SN1 and E1 reactions both involved the initial formation of a carbocation intermediate. In this
experiment, why is the SN1 product favoured over the E1 product?
The SN1 mechanism leads to substitution products, and the E1 mechanism leads to formation of
alkenes, therefore in this case, it is shown that this mechanism leads to a substitution of products
since the Cl ion is replacing the OH group by the addition of a strong acid (HCl). When the

Lou Gehrig Farewell To Baseball Rhetorical Devices
In Lou Gehrig s, Farewell to Baseball , he is addressing not only his loved ones, his fans, but the
American people who are witnessing his disease take it s course. Although Gehrig was suffering
from the terrible affects of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (later coined Lou Gehrig s Disease ), his
speech sounds more comforting than it does fearful. Gehrig uses rhetorical devices such as the
emotional appeal pathos in order to convey a positive connotation despite the bad break he is
addressing.
Lou Gehrig is most recognized for his achievements in baseball. He was the first baseman to play
17 consecutive seasons for the New York Yankeesand really made a name for himself in the world
of baseball. At a time when baseball was America s pastime, Gehrig s fan base was immense.
Unfortunately, at the age of 36 Gehrig was diagnosed with ALS which affects the body s nervous
and muscular abilities. Due to the rapid progression of the disease, Gehrig address his fans ... Show

When Gehrig speaks of all the influential people he has had the opportunity to work with, it is
apparent how grateful and appreciative he is of all the opportunities he has received through
baseball. He mentions receiving a gift from the New York Giants and how much that meant to
him. I, it makes it obvious that he feels honored and humbled. The that Gehrig speaking of these
things is so important to the speech as a whole is to convey that, although his career is coming to
a tragic end, he feels as though he has made great accomplishments. By mentioning important
figures of baseball it also builds Gehrig s credibility. This is an example of how the rhetorical
appeal of ethos can help to make it known to the audience that the speaker is knowledgable.
Especially when Gehrig mentions that he received a gift, from the very well known team, the New
York Giants, it makes it apparent that Gehrig is reputable in the work of

Unit 1 Assignment
Organizational Theory: Cross Cultural Work Environments
I will be researching a theory on the analysis of cross cultural management style and structure. In
researching this theory, it will help managers in a multinational company, or work environment,
interact with employees of a diverse background. In understanding, and getting a better idea of how
cultures interact in workplace environments, the manager can be more productive and avoid
various types of confrontations that may ultimately hurt productivity.
Analyzing the management styles and cultures of the world will enable managers to understand the
ideas of different cultures. By ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The economic development approach to comparative management research is one of the early
methods used for cross cultural management study. It is found that managerial input plays an
important role in achieving economic development, this approach focuses on the basic trends of
managerial development, rather than the analysis of organizational practices. (Negandhi, 1983)
The role of culture is said to be the most accurate approach to exploring and comparing management
and organizational styles. One of the most basic issues in cross cultural management research is to
determine what extent culture impacts an individual s behavior within the workplace. Various
cultures emphasize dimensions differently, and these are demonstrated in contrastive managerial
behaviors. Identifying the four aspects of culture that have specific implications for the workplace
is a very important task, and these implications include power distance, uncertainty avoidance,
individualism, and masculinity. An example of each are as follows, power distance, leadership
can be looked at as informal and loose, this is due to the fact that employees do not see their
superiors as that far ahead of them on the social scale. Uncertainty avoidance measures the extent to
which people in a organization tend to feel threatened by uncertain, ambiguous, risky, or

Apology On Apology Of Socrates
Saru Maharjan
Professor Nathan Poage
Philosophy 1301
March 2, 2017
Apology of Socrates Socrates was a Greek philosopher and the founder of western philosophy.
Plato was the student of Socrates who was very motivated by the life and teaching of Socrates.
Plato was also one of the greatest Philosopher of ancient Greece. Apology is the actual recorded
speech of Socrates by Plato, which was delivered at the trail to defend himself. Many people did
not agree with Socrates, so they made several charges against him, which is recorded in the
Apology. Some of the accusations made against him were studying the things in the sky and below
the earth, corrupting the young, making a worse argument into a strong argument and not believing
in the gods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But Socrates never charged the people for listening to him. Even though Gorgias doesn t fulfill the
need of philosophy, they were not charged. Socrates compares himself with Gorgias, Prodicus, and
Hippias and he proved that the false rumors about him were not true.
Another charge made against Socrates was corrupting the young, which Meletus claims he was
guilty of. He says I am guilt of corrupting the young, but I say that Meletus is guilty of dealing
frivolously with serious matters, of irresponsibly bringing people into court. (Cooper 28)
Meletus blamed that Socrates was guilty of corrupting a young man. He again asked logical
questions to the Meletus to defend himself. He says Meletus was not concerned about the young
man, he himself was concerned about and knows about the law. Law is the only thing that was
improving the young man. He again asked Meletus how he was corrupting the young man. He
was improving the young man, which everybody was doing. The members of the council,
audience, and members of the assembly everybody was making a good man. As per Socrates,
Meletus thinks everybody doing the same work was making good men but Socrates was corrupting
a young man by doing the same work
Socrates was also charged for not believing on the gods. I think he contradict himself in the
affidavit, as if said Socrates is guilty of not believing in gods

Swot Analysis Of Maria, Biological, And Family History Essay
Biopsychosocial Analysis of Maria
Biological
In the case of Maria, biological factors are to be postulated, for information with regard to the
medical, psychiatric, and family history, are not present within the case information. Currently,
Maria resides with her biological father. Maria s mother and father both lived in Puerto Rico, and
relocated to the United States when Maria was 2 years old. Shortly after this relocation, Maria s
mother left the family, and returned to Puerto Rico. The absence of Maria s mother bestows a trial
upon those who wish to understand her genetic makeup. Having information on the following
biological aspects could aid in the understanding of Maria:
Prenatal Health. Neither prenatal health, nor prenatal care, was cited within the case information.
Thus, it remains unknown as to what kind of care Maria s mother received advanced, adequate, or
inadequate. Advanced and adequate prenatal care could support the notion that Maria is medically
sound, while inadequate prenatal care could suggest the presence of an underlying health
condition. In the case of Maria, inadequate prenatal care could also explain her inability to
decipher fact from fiction. As evidenced by her outburst, it could be presumed that Maria is
incapable of recognizing this distinction, as she began to cry uncontrollably when her teacher
criticized, and coolly corrected, her birth story. The inability to consider another point of view, and
instead engage in defensive behavior,

Who Is Meursault s Irony In Albert Camus The Outsider
Albert Camus novel The Stranger follows the life of M. Meursault, a sales clerk in 1940 s Algiers,
from the death of his mother to his execution. Meursault, throughout the novel, embodies Camus s
absurdist philosophies: he disregards emotion, speaks his mind, and seems apathetic about his life.
Meursault s apathy is unusual, and thus, according to the incongruity theory of humor, is funny for
most readers. As the theory states, however, Meursault s apathy is only funny to the reader that
does not expect it, and thus the humor in the book only applies to a sect of the readers. Yet the
themes of rejection and hopelessness in the book appeal to all readers and diminish the humor in
the novel. Camus essay The Myth of Sisyphus furthers the idea... Show more content on

While waiting for his trial, a chaplain shoves a cross in Meursault s face and asks Do you know
what this is? (68) Meursault asserts his atheism and thus rejects religion. The humor in this scene
stems both from Meursault s character and the chaplain s conviction to convert Meursault. First,
Meursault is easily distracted and his comments are unexpected, and, following the incongruity
theory, are funny. While the chaplain is yelling at Meursault, Meursault says [it was] hard to
follow [the chaplain s] reasoning because it was hot and big flies kept landing on my face. (68)
Second, the chaplain is determined to reveal Meursault s [belief] in God ; thus, Meursault s
continual rejection of the God, according to the relief theory, is funny (69). The crucifix, in the
scene, symbolizes more than christianity: it represents the afterlife and the search for a higher
being, values that are deeply ingrained in society. Thus, Meursault s rejection of the crucifix, which
aligns well with Camus absurdism, serves as a shunning of hope for a better life in the moment and
an afterlife. In his essay, The Myth of Sisyphus, Camus exemplifies his point from The Stranger by
saying that the whole being is exerted toward accomplishing nothing. (1) The hopelessness and
meaningless nature that both The Myth of Sisyphus and The Stranger identify cannot, and does
not, make for comic or even humorous material; the big philosophical questions

Sexual Violence and The Adam Walsh Act
Sexual assault occurs every two minutes in the United States. Sexual violence against women is
still endemic in the United States. Statistics show nearly one in five women have been sexually
assaulted. Managing sex offenders is still an issue in the criminal justice system. Repeat offenders
are extremely difficult to monitor. The national legislature monitoring system contains an absence
of effective research in monitoring sex offenders. Sexual offender registration and notification Act
(SORNA) operates in all the US states and territories. The objective is to monitor and track sex
offenders by law enforcement. Also they provide information to the public and the communities
about the offenders. For example, the National registry allows the public to be informed of a
registered offender and their demographics.
The Adam Walsh Act (AWA) was instilled to create greater uniformity in SORNA systems in all the
US states and territories. SORNA is an essential component of the AWA. The act requires
standardizing the registration of sex offenders, and community notification practices. There are two
ways notification is practiced for registered sex offenders. Communities vary in which way to notify
residents. Some communities choose active notification. Active notification is where residents are
informed that a registered sex offender lives nearby. Residents are notified by phone, mail, or face
to face. The other form of notification that is practiced is called passive notification.

A Study On Low Back Pain Patients With Associated Leg Pain...
Abstract
Background: Low back pain patients with associated leg pain symptoms generally have a poorer
prognostic outcome compared to those with localised low back pain. Therefore, this study will
investigate the difference in clinical outcomes associated with low back pain patients with and
without self reported leg pain symptoms. This study will also address if additional co factors such
as age, sex, and occupation have an effect on the severity of these clinical outcomes. The clinical
outcomes which will be considered are pain rating, interference with active daily living (ADL)
rating, anxiety rating, depression rating and control of pain rating.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study compares adult low back pain patients with localised pain
(n = 58) to low back pain patients with self reported leg pain symptoms (n = 54) who presented for
chiropractic treatment. Patients completed the WIOC patient outcomes questionnaire as baseline
which consisted of the Bournemouth Questionnaire, recording responses from an 11 point
numerical scale (NRS). Demographic information was also collected. Differences between the two
groups using the data collected from this questionnaire were calculated using the Mann Whitney U
test. Differences between age and sex were also calculated using the test used.

Creon And Haimon In Sophocles Antigone
In the play Antigone, by Sophocles; Creon, the king of Thebes, created a law against the burial of
Polyneices. Polyneices is considered a traitor for attacking Thebes when his brother took the
throne. Antigone, Polyneices sister, decided to go against her uncle and almost father in law;
Creon, because she believed the god s law was more meaningful than Creons. Creon decides to
execute her in order to keep his own pride; this action upsets the citizens of Thebes and Creon s
son Haimon. Haimon is Creon s foil, Haimon enhances some of Creon s bad characteristics, and
their relationship takes up an enormous part of the play. Creon and Haimon are exceedingly
different people, which is why their relationship contributes to the play so much and... Show more

They brought up how women were treated, Haimon believes how Creon and some others treat
women is wrong, because he does not see them as objects. They also discussed Polyneices burial,
in which Creon was still too stubborn to listen to Haimons reasoning, and that the city folk
believed Creon was in the wrong. Another big scene was when Creon was repulsed by Haimon
being not only disobedient, but also by the fact that Haimon was choosing a women over him.
Creon sees his son choose Antigone over him, which he finds a horrible offence because Antigone
went against his orders, so he believes she is in the wrong and not himself. Creon stated to get
more outraged when Haimon accused him of being a blind ruler. Creon begin to get overly
suspicious by Haimon saying this because Creon thinks Haimon might overthrow him. This
argument during this scene becomes a big part of the tragic play, because if this argument never
happened, then Haimon would not have killed himself. In one day Haimon had lost his father and
his fiance because of his father s arrogance. If Creon had listened to Haimons opinion and concerns
on Polyneices burial and Antigone s punishment, Creon would have not been responsible for three
deaths. In Antigone, by Sophocles, Creon the king of Thebes is a foil to his son Haimon, Hiamon

Media Improve Communication
The Way Social Media Improve Communication Between People
The creation of social media is important technology that has positive effects on individual s life.
Also, It can help to people have a great communication with each other that is very useful. On the
other hand, some people argue that social media provide a negative effect in our lives. In
additional, they believe, some people might use these tools in the wrong way. For example, some
people use this tool for a long time that waste their time. However, I believe networking sites is a
very important innovation for having a better communication with other people. In my
opinion, there are several ways that prove social media improves the way that we communicate with
each other, including possibility of voice and video calls, improve business with build relationship
between people and ability share information to each other.
Some people argue that excessive use of social media is not acceptable, because it will lead to
waste their time. For example, some children might use social media for long hours, so this action
create some addiction between children, also they will waste their precious times of their lives. In
addition, many people spend much of their time to talk with their families with social media such
as, Facebook, Twitter and Telegram that cause individuals cannot appropriately use of their time.
Another reason that prove social media networking sites waste valuable our time is, unfortunately

Barbarians is a word given to a human who is perceived to be either uncivilized or primitive. The barbarians during this ancient time frame, were able to conquer and defeat many empires for many years because of their very strong and inhumane use of brute force to get the job done and strike fear in peoples minds. One of the most well known barbaric tribes was the Mongols from China, led by the powerful Genghis Kong. • 3. The Juvenile Justice System Is The Primary System Used The Juvenile Justice System is the primary system used to handle youth who are convicted of criminal offenses. It is just over 100 years old. Over time it has gone through several changes and its unlikely to disappear anytime soon. We as Americans are still trying to find different ways to approach juvenile justice vs. approaching it as adult justice. Throughout most of history, young adults and or children did not have a separate status between juvenile and adults. Once you reached the ages of 5 or 6, you became apart of the adult society. There was no separate system for dealing with youth offenders. In the early 1800s, problems with how to deal with youth offenders began to come about due to society going through economical... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All juveniles under the age of 16 could be handled by the court. Between 1960s and the 1980s, attention and speculation began to rise about the concern of the juvenile delinquency and court system. During this time, this era was characterized by distinctly harsh punishments for youths. They were also wanting to focus on providing minors with due process and legal counsel in court. Even though they were trying to provide help to youth offenders, criticism during this time, focused on racial discrimination, gender disparities and discrimination towards children with mental health problems or learning disabilities. Through out the years, crime rates rose and the misrepresentation from the media began around the 1960s and went through the 1980s. Today in America, no population poses a larger threat to public safety than juvenile offenders. Juvenile justice system deal with three types of case; Delinquents, status offenders, neglected, abused or dependent youth. Over the years, many states have established family courts to deal with offenders and cases with the status of neglect. Throughout the years, there has always been some type of tension between police and young offenders. In my personal opinion, I think this comes from the music that the youth listens to. Most state statues provide some guidance for arrest procedures. As an officer, you have the discretion in deciding when to arrest juvenile offenders. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Just Exercise of Political Power The just exercise of political power is conceived of as resting upon constitutional principles. Constitutional principles are a position from which we operate justly. However, what constitutes as just? Throughout history political power derived from many historical foundations that were deemed just based on the society that upheld those principles. This notion is evident throughout the development of constitutional doctrines in Greek democracy, Aristotle s political theory, Roman Republicanism, and English Constitutionalism. Due to society, cultural diversity troubles the mode of governess. This is because at times there are circumstances where cultural ideologies oppress other cultures and limit the concept of a democratic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What Aristotle called Polity was based on political power and the best practical government. This notion differed from Ancient Greek democracy. During the 4th Century B.C, Aristotle rose as a critic of direct democracy based on two grounds: are all individuals qualified to govern? Should we select a few individuals who are fit for leadership? Bernard Crick writes, while democracy was for him a necessary condition for good government, it was far from a sufficient condition (Crick 1). Aristotle had a negative outlook on human nature. This led to his belief on how a government system should rule and the dismissal of a direct democracy. Similarly to Ancients, Aristotle believed that a direct democracy would only crumble. For this reason, he introduced Checks and balances . Checks and balances gave limited power to each branch of power and to the people. He identified his a polity by representative government, balanced government, and a mixed government. Representative government is one ruled by a leader . And yet, he questioned the idea of placing trust in the hands of the uneducated, incompetent. More importantly, he believed that in order to be a leader, one must meet the five characteristics to be considered a leader . The characteristics required: intelligence, knowledge, experience, wisdom, and virtue. It was especially important for one to attain wisdom because that is the end result of knowledge ... • 6. The Libation Bearers and Hamlet The Libation Bearers and Hamlet Many of Shakespeare s plays draw from classical Greek themes, plot and metaphors. The tragedies of Sophocles, Aeschylus, Euripides and Homer have themes like royal murders, assassinations by near relatives, the supernatural, ghostly visits, and vengeful spirits of the dead themes which reappear in Shakespeare s tragedies with a difference. Shakespeare s tragic hero Hamlet and Aeschylus s Orestes have a great deal in common. Both the plays are set in a time when the society is going through transition. In Orestia gods are changing. Furies turn into Eumenides or the Pacified Ones. Social and political norms are changing. The old laws of revenge and retribution have to be re established. Similarly Hamlet s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both the tragic heroes are troubled by supernatural visits and nightmares. Both have ethical and moral dilemmas , nevertheless, Hamlet is much more scholarly and agonized than Orestes who better fits in the robe of a Classical Greek revenge hero. Jessica Price observes: An onslaught of tragic elements appear in both Hamlet and The Oresteia. Hamlet s hamartia in William Shakespeare s Hamlet leads to his succumbing to corruption and his eventual demise. In The Oresteia by Aeschylus, Orestes hamartia takes a slightly different course, causing him to stumble, but not completely fall. While Orestes never indulges in long existential speeches or philosophical thinking Hamlet delays the action in his endless quest for a right answer. Hamlet is not faced with the terrible commitment of killing his own mother. He has to kill his uncle to whom one is not as dearly related as a son is to his mother. Still he does not consider it right to kill his uncle on an apparitions command. He puts him to test to affirm what his father s ghost said. He arranges a play based on the actual event of king s murder to be performed before his uncle and mother and note their responses to it. Even after his suspicion is validated he cannot bring himself round to kill his uncle. He wants to heal what has been hurt, make right what is wrong, do the justice but deep inside he does not want to kill Claudius. Orestes, on the other hand, right ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He is never wrong and presents himself as very self righteous. In this book, bias towards women is obvious. It is one of the main themes and is not hard to find. Babmukuru at first suggests that Nhamo, Tambu s brother, be educated instead of Tambu because he is a boy and she is a girl but after years at this school Nhamo has changed in a bad way and rejects his family and learns a native language until eventually, he dies in a hospital away from his family. Only then does Babmukuru offer Tambu to take the place of Nhamo and attend the missionary school by his house. He becomes a prime example of discrimination in women s education. He yieldingly lets Tambu go to a new school to higher her education even after she received a scholarship. Babmukuru s alpha male dominance over all the other characters are, according to him, his duty, but it ends up being crippling for the women s spirits. Another example of this gender issue is when Tambu is visiting her family at the mission and discover that her aunt serves her uncle dinner and lets him finish eating before serving herself or her children. The main character, Tambu, is trying to find herself and her own voice but has a male figure around her that doesn t accept her growth because he thinks everything should be done to his approval and she is contradicting it. • 11. Reasons Why Guns Should Be Banned Violence is out of control, and guns are a major cause Should Guns Be Banned? introduction. This is a belief many Americans now share. This belief is fueling a nationwide movement that could result in a total prohibition on private gun ownership in the near future. Just imagine if every handgun owner was made to dispose of their gun, how much more peaceful the U. S. or rather the world would be? Ownership of private guns is being banned one step at a time. The recently enacted Brady Bill mandates a national five day waiting period and background check for all handgun purchases (Wollstein par. 1). Maryland has just passed a law that requires a state license for any handgun purchase and limits purchases to one per month. Also, President Clinton banned the importation of most foreign made, semiautomatic rifles (Reynolds 1). On February 28, 1994, Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen announced that several 12 gauge semiautomatic shotguns were being reclassified in the same category as machine guns (Wollstein par. ). The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms simultaneously announced that they would trace the owners of 18,000 of these shotguns and order them to be fingerprinted and to register their guns with the ATF within 30 days or face ten years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine (Wollstein par. 4). On the same day that semiautomatic shotguns were reclassified, Senator Howard Metzenbaum introduced legislation that would require all handgun owners to get a federal license, pass a safety test, and register their weapons with police (Reynolds 3). Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan has proposed legislation that would raise the tax on some ammunition up to 10,000 percent. The price of a single box of Winchester 9 millimeter hollow tipped cartridges would increase to $15,000( ). Would banning guns reduce crime? According to recent polls, most Americans now support gun licensing as a way to reduce crime. Crime has certainly been increasing particularly violent crime. Between 1960 and 1980, robberies nationwide increased by 300 percent. In the same period, both the number of handguns and the national murder rate doubled (Wollstein par. ). But is the proliferation of guns the cause of violence or a response to violence? ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The United States Vs. The Treaty Of Versailles The United States vs. the Treaty of Versailles The Treaty of Versailles was a peace settlement between Germany and the Allied Powers signed on June 28, 1919. The Treaty of Versailles officially ended World War 1. However, since the conditions in the treaty were so punitive towards Germany many believe that it was also partly responsible for starting World War 2. Before the treaty was signed President Woodrow Wilsonand his opponent in congress, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge debated over the membership in the League of Nations and about the mortality of the treaty. Many debated that the United States should have signed the Treaty of Versaillesand joined the League of Nations while others oppose both the treaty and the alliance. I believe that the United States did the right thing by rejecting the Treaty of Versailles, and avoiding the entangling commitments overseas which the alliance would have brought upon us. Correspondingly, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge also held an anti Versailles position. Senator Lodge viewed the treaty as suspicious and stated more than once that a matter this important should not be rushed. My one desire is that not only the Senate, which is charged with responsibility, but that the press and the people of the country should investigate every proposal with the utmost thoroughness and weigh them all carefully before they make up their minds (Document 1). Lodge acknowledges that treaties are long and serious documents pertaining to the nation and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Visual Illusions Are A Phenomena That Arise From... Visual illusions are a phenomena that arise from misperception of the observed object s properties. Visual illusions allow us to study the difference between the objective reality and our interpretation of the perceived visual stimuli or the way our brains process visual information, in order to develop a general understanding of our visual system (Carrasco, 1986); In spite of the relevance of this issue, general concensus is yet to be reached on the origin of such phenomena One representation is the Muller Lyer (1889) Illusion (MLI), a geometric size illusion classically represented by modified perception of the length of a line, influenced by arrowheads or arrowtails on its endpoints (Zeman et al, 2014). The MLI has been widely used attempting to explain the underlying mechanism behind geometrical illusions; Gregory (1966) attributed the illusion to the misapplied size constancy scaling influenced by depth cues; Carrasco (1986), argued that visual channels are orientation and spatial frequency specific after presenting the MLI to eight participants and observing a reduction on the illusion after exposure to a low spatial frequency grid. Although evidence questioning this claim has been presented in many studies (Carlson, Moeller, Anderson, 1984) (GarcГa Garibay De Lafuente, 2015) (Zeman et al, 2014) (Zeman A. , Obst, Brooks, Rich, 2013) where the illusion persists in images absent of low spatial frequencies and has been assessed with the latest technology. Rousseau s Discourse A FARMER S PLIGHT: AN ANALYSIS OF THE HACIENDA LUISITA CONTROVERSY ACCORDING TO ROUSSEAU S DISCOURSE ON INEQUALITY INTRODUCTION This paper aims to compare Rousseau s idea in his work Discourse on Inequality to the non ending controversy regarding Hacienda Luisita, while the aim of Rousseau s Discourse is to examine the foundations of inequality among men, and to determine whether this inequality is authorized by natural law. Inequality has always been a never ending trend topic in the Philippines, and we can see that there is still widespread inequality throughout the country today, defined in sociology as the existence of unequal opportunities and rewards for different social positions or statuses within a group or society. We can see political inequality through the exploitation of the poor, which is represented by the Farmers, by the rich, represented by the Cojuangco Aquino clan; this exploitation is present because of the rivalry in property between the two groups. The Cojuangcos, who owns the vast 6,000 hectare property, are the ones who control the people who work and live there. The wealth that they amass from its produce gives them the power to hold those who are deeply indebted to them in the palm of their hands. The lack of the workers ability to finance and sustain their fight for the right to own the land that they and their ancestors were cultivating continues to be the main problem. The unjust working conditions has been an issue for years, but had these landlords put their feet in the workers shoes, even for just a while, they would have heard and given the farmers what they were asking for a long time ago. To avoid the conflict, the Cojuangcos must lend an ear and open their eyes to what the workers are saying, and perhaps both parties involved would be able to communicate and gain benefits ... I have collaborated with nursing and healthcare leadership professionals on a project to improve communication and health outcomes for a specific population. As our group has formed and developed during this quarter, I have identified strengths and weaknesses in my ability to work within a group. The four stages of a group, as described by Connery and Vohs (2006) will be discussed as they pertained to my perception of the group process and outcomes this quarter. My communication strengths, weaknesses, and my adoption of the informal roles outlined by Connery and Vohs (2006) with regard to group work will be analyzed as well as my plan for utilizing my strengths and addressing my weaknesses for future interactions and group work. Group Phases During our Forming phase, as described by Connery and Vohs (2006), we spent a little time getting to know each other, but we stuck to the basics like names, work schedules and phone numbers. After these initial introductions, we assigned the roles of coordinator and recorder and discussed some group norms that we wanted to adopt for the quarter. We then started discussing the focus of our group work and trying to devise a plan for how we will move through the quarter. This is seen by Thoreau s comparisons of the American lifestyle to people or beings that do not live logically, such as the greedy man who was turned into an ant by Zeus in one of Aesop s fables, or the pygmies and the cranes that fought a war until the pygmy population was decimated. He states in the excerpt that he wanted to . . . live so sturdily and Spartan like as to put to rout all that is not life, (Thoreau, 2). This quotation emphasizes that the American people are not able to truly live life since they tend to live in extravagant excess. Thoreau moves from American excess to the railroad swiftly. Thoreau criticizes his fellow humans when he states that they have somewhat hastily concluded that it is the chief end of man here to glorify God and enjoy him forever, (Thoreau, 2). The indicated quotation shows that Thoreau believes that his fellow citizens have not actually taken the time to look at all the facts of life in order to make an educated decision about what life is for. Thoreau intends to tell the world what life is about since he believes that many humans are in a strange uncertainty about it, whether it is of the devil or of God, (Thoreau, 2). If people are uncertain about who created life, Thoreau suggests that they take away all the superficial aspects of it and examine its bare bones. However, many people wish to live extravagantly and do not know who or what created life, nor do they wish to give up their material possessions to find out. In the event that people did discern what life was and who created it, Thoreau would not have to be critical of them as they would live the way he did and they would not have anything that was not necessary for their survival, which would itself make them happy. Thus, if humankind cared more about the basics of life rather than its extravagance, Thoreau might not have felt the need to disapprove of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Katie Rose Knoblock Professor Taylor AMH 2010 O1M 6 November 2017 Evolution of the Industrial Revolution Many factories did this by targeting women and children as they could be paid less than men with no repercussions. The workers that were hired to these positions, especially women, were subject to some very harsh work conditions. They were subject to terrible work environments including buildings called sweatshops, which were poorly lit and ventilated for maximum productivity. They were forced to work in dangerous conditions where a person could easily be maimed or even killed if they mishandled the equipment they used for their work. It was not unheard of for the workers to be expected to work as much as 16 hours a day under threats of being fired or even physically abused if they did not complete their work with great speed. Even after all their effort in the workplace, it was not uncommon for a person to be paid as little as a single dollar for their day s efforts. These poor working conditions gave rise to labor unions in the 19th century to insure proper working conditions for all laborers. The labor unions aided in workplace safety and fairness by using a large group of people to sway greedy business owners in the right direction. One of the hidden elements that the reader must analyzie closely is the parallel between Santiago and JesusChrist. This later passage which details Santiago s painful climb up the hill to his shack, bearing the mast of his boat on his shoulders is an allusion to Christ s last ascent (Wylder 91). William O Conner believes The Old Man and the Sea can be classified as a Christian tragedyВ…especially in several marked allusions to Christian symbolism, particularly of the crucifixion (O Connor 169). Following the example of Christ, he [Santiago] suffers unjustly and undergoes defeat. He experiences his own type of crucifixion. But he accepts suffering, again following the model of Christ (Auer 22). Carrying the mast (cross), Santiago struggles to his shack. At the shack, Santiago goes to bed in a crucifixion pose: face down, arms out, palms up. He pulled the blanket over his shoulders and then over his back and legs and he slept face down on the newspapers with his arms out straight and the palms of his hands up (Hemingway 112). As a result of the precise parallel between Santiago and Christ, the reader can infer that Santiago is Christ in disguise. One critic Arvin Wells believes Santiago can be seen as a Christian saint (22). This semantic knowledge is demonstrated by the impact of semantic manipulations (e.g. word perceptibility) and by neuropsychological studies of word recall deficits. This can be explained either by redintegration or languagebased accounts. Redintegration is the long term knowledge of lexical forms of words that facilitate item reconstruction. • 32. Ancient Jews And Their Belief Of God Ancient Jews and their Belief in God(s) Throughout the centuries, the Jewish people have maintained their customs and religion. One of the most common assumptions has been that the ancient Jews have always been monotheistic. Yet, upon closer examination, this conventional wisdom is inaccurate. Ugaritic texts, archeological data, and the Biblical narrative itself all demonstrate that the ancient Jews were not monotheistic, contrary to what many believe. In fact, there is proof that they acknowledged and sometimes worshipped other gods, as late as the seventh century CE. In order to grasp what this means, there needs to be an understanding of who the ancient Jews were, who their neighbors were, and what was worshipped at the time. To understand what the ancient Jews believed in, we first must define who these ancient Jews were. The first mention of ancient Jews in history is in the year 1207 BCE. In the book, Ancient Inscriptions: Voices from the Biblical World, an Egyptian King Merneptah tries to conquer many lands through his campaign to achieve greatness. He writes about his conquests and mentions Israel by saying, Israel is laid to waste, his seed is no more. Ronald Hendel, a Biblical scholar, cites this verse in his article, Israel among the Nations, and we begin to see mention of the Jewish people in history. Up until this point, there is no historical proof that a separate nation of Israel existed. This verse gives us evidence of the coexistence of Israel and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since the fundamental tasks of a protein is to act as an enzyme, catalysts increase the rate of the activation energy within a cell. Cell contain thousands of different enzymes, and their activities determine what chemical reaction will take place within the cell. The enzymeand the activation energy function as a process within the cell, chemical reactions do not just occur spontaneously or sporadically. Enzymes control the productivity and speed of chemical reactions within our body, it s important to understand how they catalyze and function. There is a class of related enzymes known as Phenolases. These enzymes catalyze the oxidation of compunds that have hydroxyl groupds attatched to a benzene ring, recongized as phenols. • 39. The Problem Of Environmental Protection Essay Theodore Roosevelt had once said, The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased, and not impaired in value . These words have resonated since and have been an example as to why it is our duty as inhabitants of this planet to provide protection to the ever so fragile environment. But what is Environmental protection exactly? Well it is one of the most important, and expensive problems businesses and society are facing today. Why you may ask? Since the industrial age all the countries around the world have been burning an assortment of fuel to power factories, vehicles, heat homes, and even to cook with and when these fuels are burned they emit carbon dioxide and various other chemicals which over time add up and take a very long time to breakdown. As a result they trap heat from the sun in the earth s atmosphere raising the global temperature and causing a domino effect on the environment. Likewise companies produce hazardous waste and dump them illegally in waters which kills vast amounts of marine life. Although laws are in place to protect the planet, inventions are slowly being created to provide alternative sources of energy and agencies already exist to protect the environment. However it is our duty as people in a society to act on our own by demanding for our government to show greater concern for the environment by reforming environmental protection laws with stricter guide lines, ... It is found that managerial input plays an important role in achieving economic development, this approach focuses on the basic trends of managerial development, rather than the analysis of organizational practices. (Negandhi, 1983) The role of culture is said to be the most accurate approach to exploring and comparing management and organizational styles. One of the most basic issues in cross cultural management research is to determine what extent culture impacts an individual s behavior within the workplace. Various cultures emphasize dimensions differently, and these are demonstrated in contrastive managerial behaviors. Identifying the four aspects of culture that have specific implications for the workplace is a very important task, and these implications include power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism, and masculinity. Meursault, a sales clerk in 1940 s Algiers, from the death of his mother to his execution. Meursault, throughout the novel, embodies Camus s absurdist philosophies: he disregards emotion, speaks his mind, and seems apathetic about his life. Meursault s apathy is unusual, and thus, according to the incongruity theory of humor, is funny for most readers. As the theory states, however, Meursault s apathy is only funny to the reader that does not expect it, and thus the humor in the book only applies to a sect of the readers. First, Meursault is easily distracted and his comments are unexpected, and, following the incongruity theory, are funny. While the chaplain is yelling at Meursault, Meursault says [it was] hard to follow [the chaplain s] reasoning because it was hot and big flies kept landing on my face. The crucifix, in the scene, symbolizes more than christianity: it represents the afterlife and the search for a higher being, values that are deeply ingrained in society. Thus, Meursault s rejection of the crucifix, which aligns well with Camus absurdism, serves as a shunning of hope for a better life in the moment and an afterlife. In his essay, The Myth of Sisyphus, Camus exemplifies his point from The Stranger by saying that the whole being is exerted toward accomplishing nothing.
