Holding an MA in Education and International Development, she previously worked in education strategy for the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and, since 2010, has also acted as director of a gender equality in education programme in Togo through a Canada-Togo partnership.

Shaping Expectations: Defining and Refining the Role of Technical Services in...NASIG
From trial to implementation, technical services staff play an important role in shaping awareness of, and expectations for, new resources. Internally, technical services staff provide information and instruction to public services staff. Externally, they influence how new resources are integrated into the library website and other platforms. With appropriate “message control,” technical services staff can positively influence awareness of new resources while keeping everyone’s expectations in check.
During fall 2015, technical services staff at Georgia Southern University adopted a protocol for new resource rollouts that explicitly times and structures internal and external communications to ensure that all library staff are ready to support new resources as they go live. This protocol focuses on providing appropriate lead-time notifications to public services staff and “training the trainers” first, prior to releasing any external communications. Furthermore, this protocol integrates with activities of the library’s promotion committee, supporting smooth transition to public services promotion of new resources.
During this session, presenters will discuss this protocol in detail, with special emphasis on timing of internal and external communications, the importance of providing sufficient staff training and support materials early on, and the importance of maintaining objectivity and accuracy in all rollout communications and assets. Presenters will share protocol planning tools and worksheets, describe how these are integrated into implementation workflows, and engage participants in discussion about the role of technical services in new resource rollouts.

For higher education students, learning can happen anytime and anywhere, however not much is known about how students actually conduct research. A User eXperience (UX) approach, which deploys an anthropological lens, has typically focussed on how library users are interacting with space and services. In this paper I will present the findings of an ethnographic study which shifted the traditional focus of UX to understand how students are engaging with the research process. Using participant observation, behavioural maps, student diaries and retrospective interviews, I was provided with unique access that enabled me to capture the behaviours of these students in their own environments. The research examined the practice of undergraduate research both inside and outside the library walls and found that the research process can be influenced by a number of factors including age, experience, work commitments, family, peer, academic and library anxiety.
I was acutely aware of my responsibility as a researcher to build trust and honesty with the students. Working so closely with them enabled me to discover patterns in their research behaviour, discuss their approach to research and identify gaps in support. This was collaborative ethnography; as I observed research practice, I was able to provide instant advice to help them improve their research skills. In addition, I have discussed my findings with academic colleagues and together we have been making improvements to undergraduate study skills modules. This paper will discuss how an ethnographic approach has informed my professional practice and ultimately improved how I deliver research skills support to undergraduate students. I will also reflect on the role ethnography can play in empowering librarians to perform a leading research role within their own institutions.
Wrangling Cats: A Case Study of a Library Consortium MigrationNASIG
The Orbis Cascade Alliance is a consortium of 37 public and private academic institutions in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. In January 2012, the Alliance began a two-year process of migrating all 37 institutions to a single, shared ILS. Migrating in four cohorts every six months, the first cohort of six institutions went live with Alma and Primo in July 2013 with the final cohort migrating in December 2014. A representative from one of the six pioneering libraries will discuss the motivations for migrating to Alma/Primo as a consortium, the implementation process, key post-migration wins, lessons learned, and migration tips and tricks.

The Future of Information Literacy in the Library: An Example of Librarian/Pu...NASIG
The last decade has seen immense growth in information sources and information output, which in turn has changed the way students and researchers find and use information. Following this, we’ve also seen a shift from the traditional “librarian as expert” role to the “librarian as teacher” role, where the imparting of information literacy skills and their embedding into the curriculum is recognized as a primary responsibility of today’s academic librarian.
This session will explore how librarians are becoming more involved with information literacy curriculum and how publishers can assist them, particularly regarding access to information and the scholarly publishing process.
In 2015 and early 2016, Rebecca Donlan, Assistant Director for Collection Management at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), and Stacy Sieck, Library Communications Manager at Taylor & Francis Group, created and implemented an information literacy program for FCGU students and faculty that focuses specifically on navigating the scholarly publishing landscape.This collaborative project includes the creation and launch of webinars and online toolkits that provide tips and information on how to get published in academic journals, understanding the peer review process, navigating Open Access publishing, promoting and resuing your work, and more.
During this session, Rebecca and Stacy will provide an update on the status of their information literacy project, including user feedback, webinar usage statistics, and tips and best practices for recreating a similar program at different universities.

The presenters will share their research on politics in library publishing, published in 2016 in the book "Open Access and the Future of Scholarly Communication." Many libraries have forayed into the world of open access (OA) publishing, marking a major shift in the mission of libraries to move from providing access to content to generating and creating content. The presenters will discuss the politics and issues involved, highlight the approaches various libraries have taken—and the challenges faced—in selecting a platform, writing a business plan, planning for preservation, educating researchers about OA publishing, working with a university press, marketing, and navigating staff training issues. Recommendation for defining library roles in this new territory, areas of focus, and future research will be highlighted.

Open Access in the World of Scholarly Journals: creation and discoveryNASIG
Access to scholarly journals produced by commercial publishers is becoming more and more expensive, and open access to publicly-funded research results is increasingly mandated by funding bodies. In response to these and other motivators, the open access scholarly journal movement is growing. In the Canadian context, open access publishing has begun to get more traction in response to these factors, and in spite of some resistance by researchers. University and college libraries are getting involved in both the promotion and the creation of open access content. An example of this is the University of Lethbridge Journal Incubator, which publishes three open access journals from the University Library. We will explore some of the benefits and drawbacks of open access in scholarly communications.
One model of open access is the hybrid journal, which causes particular challenges for discovery and access. With access restricted at the article, rather than the journal level, it's surprisingly hard to get library users to OA content through catalogs, link resolvers, or even discovery tools. Chris will investigate some of the roadblocks and consult with publishers, librarians, and service providers to see what is currently being done to overcome this challenge. Are readers currently getting to OA content in hybrid journals through library systems and sites? Is the NISO License and Access Indicators Recommended Practice likely to change current practices? How are discovery tool vendors responding to this challenge? Can service providers outside of the traditional library content and software sector have an impact? After investigating all of these angles Chris will try to determine if there is a likely way forward and share what attendees can do to improve access to Hybrid OA journals in the short and long term.
Sandra Cowan is the liaison librarian for English, Modern Languages, Religious Studies and the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada. She has research interests in digital humanities, scholarly communications, and research methods of creative workers.
Chris Bulock is the Electronic Resources Librarian at California State University Northridge. His research has focused on perpetual access, e-resource evaluation, and the effect of Open Access on collection development and e-resource management. He writes a column on OA issues in the Serials Review, and he is an incoming NASIG Member at Large.

From the Cloud to the Reading Room: Mediating User Experience of Archival Col...CONUL Conference

Abstract
"Learning through encountering is a widening facet for archive collections and their users at present. Through teaching, independent research, online publication and exhibition of material as well of the digitised artefact, the integration of unique collections into the learning space is affording new opportunities and possibilities for projecting the archive to a new and widening user base. This is part of the commitment in developing user experience of learning through engagement in an embedded manner with unique archival collections.
From subject areas of theatre, literature, Northern Ireland conflict and society, the geography and culture of the West of Ireland, among others, this talk will explore the changing presence of archives as and in research from undergraduate to postgraduate and academic research and teaching, through digital and traditional means. Shifting methods of engagement, through cataloguing standards and access to finding aids, key-word cataloguing, digital access, linked-collections for research, outreach and advocacy, are all facilitating greater awareness of collections among researchers but also an awareness of the strategies and benefits of archival usage in research through various media. With such increasing volumes of material, data and modes of access, a greater emphasis must also come in mediating that deluge for the user.
Recent developments has seen the archives and archive service of the Hardiman Library become research partners with academic teaching, projects and planning but with the archivist as mediator between information content and user engagement. These interventions are key to ensuring relevancy of archives in research, at a time where we are witnessing a redefining of engagement Libraries and their services among users. Archive literacy, being the skillset of the researcher when encountering, navigating and utilising the collection content in varying media and format is also undergoing a radical change. This paper will address these current questions and issues and highlight the work of information professionals as curators of unique collections and the role of mediation between researcher and object.

Biography
Barry Houlihan is an archivist at the James Hardiman Library at National University of Ireland, Galway, where he has catalogued the archives of Professor Kevin Boyle, Human Rights Academic, Lawyer and Activist; the archive of Druid Theatre Company; the Galway Arts Festival, and others. He is a Project group member of the Abbey Theatre Digitisation Project. Barry’s interests include promoting new ways of engagement with archives, archives in research and digital access to collections. He is also currently working on a Phd focusing on the memory and archival record of theatre, politics and society in the 1960s and 1970s.”

This panel discussion will explore multiple uses and implementations of Islandora, an open source digital repository framework. Panelists will describe their digital projects, how Islandora was utilized and their overall experience.
Afternoon Session: Islandora Demonstration (Hands-on)
Islandora is an OAIS adherent and open source digital repository framework. It combines the Drupal CMS and Fedora Commons repository software, together with additional open source applications, the framework delivers a wide range of functionality out of the box.
This Islandora demonstration will provide users with an overview of how to ingest content, configure the discovery layer and restrict access to content.
