The University of Minnesota has emerged as a national leader through its Open Textbook Library, which is a searchable catalog of more than 100 open textbooks. The Libraries also partnered with other entities on campus for their Digital Course Pack project, which has helped streamline the course pack process and make materials more affordable for students.
Shan Sutton, Associate University Librarian for Research and Scholarly Communication, Oregon State University Libraries. The OSU libraries are partnering with the OSU Press for a pilot program to develop open access textbooks by OSU faculty members. The program issued an RFP in the fall, and recently announced four winning proposals that will be published in 2014-2015.

The internship program would place students in archives, galleries, museums or libraries for 11 weeks to gain experience in public history fields. Previous interns have helped prepare materials for exhibitions at the university library. The proposed program would enhance the experience with digitization training and having interns digitize a postcard collection. The internship benefits both the students and host institutions by providing sorted materials, online presentations for promotion, and ideas for training resources.

Wrangling Cats: A Case Study of a Library Consortium MigrationNASIG
The Orbis Cascade Alliance is a consortium of 37 public and private academic institutions in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. In January 2012, the Alliance began a two-year process of migrating all 37 institutions to a single, shared ILS. Migrating in four cohorts every six months, the first cohort of six institutions went live with Alma and Primo in July 2013 with the final cohort migrating in December 2014. A representative from one of the six pioneering libraries will discuss the motivations for migrating to Alma/Primo as a consortium, the implementation process, key post-migration wins, lessons learned, and migration tips and tricks.

For higher education students, learning can happen anytime and anywhere, however not much is known about how students actually conduct research. A User eXperience (UX) approach, which deploys an anthropological lens, has typically focussed on how library users are interacting with space and services. In this paper I will present the findings of an ethnographic study which shifted the traditional focus of UX to understand how students are engaging with the research process. Using participant observation, behavioural maps, student diaries and retrospective interviews, I was provided with unique access that enabled me to capture the behaviours of these students in their own environments. The research examined the practice of undergraduate research both inside and outside the library walls and found that the research process can be influenced by a number of factors including age, experience, work commitments, family, peer, academic and library anxiety.
I was acutely aware of my responsibility as a researcher to build trust and honesty with the students. Working so closely with them enabled me to discover patterns in their research behaviour, discuss their approach to research and identify gaps in support. This was collaborative ethnography; as I observed research practice, I was able to provide instant advice to help them improve their research skills. In addition, I have discussed my findings with academic colleagues and together we have been making improvements to undergraduate study skills modules. This paper will discuss how an ethnographic approach has informed my professional practice and ultimately improved how I deliver research skills support to undergraduate students. I will also reflect on the role ethnography can play in empowering librarians to perform a leading research role within their own institutions.

The topic of providing Open Educational Resources, OERs, as an alternative to costly textbooks for students in higher education is on the minds of educators, administrators, librarians, publishers, and faculty these days. All are eager to ease the cost burden of higher education by providing students with freely available, openly licensed learning materials, but each constituency faces specific barriers and has specific questions to be resolved.
At Emporia State University, faculty, librarians, and administrators are at the beginning of an exploration of the advantages and disadvantages that are part and parcel of creating, adopting, storing, maintaining, and licensing OERs. A task force has been formed to "establish a baseline for current OER efforts at ESU and to initiate a process of discovery to evaluate resources and infrastructure necessary to enlarge our OER efforts beyond the current baseline" (OER Task Force charge). Some of the topics that the Task Force may consider are
* Weighing the strengths and weaknesses of including OER as a strategic plan initiative;
* Analyzing faculty work conditions within an OER environment;
* Determining the need to adjust institutional intellectual property rights policies;
* Assessing student attitudes toward OER as well as preferences for digital or print resources;
* Exploring faculty incentives for assessing/adapting/authoring OER;
* Assessing the financial impact of OER to the bookstore and the Memorial Union;
* Developing an information campaign to educate faculty, students, and staff about OER;
* Exploring software systems, like Intellus, that might facilitate OER access;
* Cataloging ready-made resources, like Open Stax, for faculty availability.
One thing that is clear is that the collaborations among ESU constituencies, among institutions of higher education in Kansas and the Midwest, and among educators, administrators, librarians, publishers, and faculty are necessary to the success of an OER project at ESU. In this presentation, I propose to present the experiences of the OER task force, particularly their collaborations with both internal and external stakeholders, as well as the results of their work as a case study. I will focus on sharing how collaborations with stakeholders influenced the process, the choices, and the outcomes of the work of the task force; particularly those that are transferable and may have benefits for other institutions of higher education.

The UPR implemented a strategic plan called "Ten for the Decade" which included accreditation efforts and partnering with the Association of College and Research Libraries. As part of this, the UPR libraries developed CoPs to contribute to modifying institutional culture. The study found that the CoPs contributed to individual learning, collaboration, new practices and services. Key success factors included institutional support, voluntary participation, and use of technologies like blogs and Facebook for knowledge sharing. The CoPs influenced organizational culture by strengthening relationships within the university and increasing recognition of librarians as innovators.
