This document describes a new drill design that reduces stress on diamond coatings. It summarizes: 1) Current drill designs suffer from adhesion problems and thickness limitations of diamond coatings due to residual stresses. 2) The new design lowers stress on the diamond coating through perfecting the geometry of the drill design at both the macro and micro levels. 3) This decreases delamination of the coating by reducing the amount of stress, extending drill life and increasing the number of holes drilled before failure.
