This document discusses different types of valves. It defines a valve as a device that regulates the flow of fluid by opening, closing, or partially obstructing passages. The main valve types discussed are globe valves, gate valves, ball valves, needle valves, butterfly valves, diaphragm valves, check valves, and safety valves. Each type is described in terms of its design, function, advantages, and disadvantages.
Pressure Reducing Valve or simply PRV is a type of valve which is used to reduce the downstream pressure to the desired level in any piping system. It is generally used where the main line carries the fluid at very high pressure and it is advisable to reduce the pressure in the branch line to save the appliances from getting damaged due to the impact of high pressure. Not only the pressure, it also helps in reducing the water wastages, noise and vibration, water hammering effect thus minimizing the maintenance cost and maximizing the life of the appliances like pipe fittings, taps, water heater etc

DIFFERENT TYPES OF FLOW CONTROL VALVES
1. BALL VALVE
A ball valve is a form of quarter-turn valve which uses a hollow, perforated and pivoting ball to
control flow through it. It is open when the ball\'s hole is in line with the flow and closed when it
is pivoted 90-degrees by the valve handle. The handle lies flat in alignment with the flow when
open, and is perpendicular to it when closed, making for easy visual confirmation of the valve\'s
status.
Ball valves are durable, performing well after many cycles, and reliable, closing securely even
after long periods of disuse. These qualities make them an excellent choice for shutoff and
control applications, where they are often preferred to gates and globe valves, but they lack their
fine control in throttling applications.
The ball valve\'s ease of operation, repair, and versatility lend it to extensive industrial use,
supporting pressures up to 1000 bar and temperatures up to 752 °F (500 °C), depending on
design and materials used. Sizes typically range from 0.2 to 48 inches (0.5 cm to 121 cm). One
disadvantage of a ball valve is that they trap water in the center cavity while in the closed
position. In the event of a freeze, the sides can crack due to expansion of ice forming. Some
means of insulation or heat tape in this situation will usually prevent damage. Another option for
cold climates is the \"freeze tolerant ball valve\". This style of ball valve incorporates a freeze
plug in the side so in the event of a freeze up, the freeze plug ruptures, (acts as a sacrificial disk),
thus making for an easy repair. Now instead of replacing the whole valve, just screw in a new
freeze plug.
2.GATE VALVE
A gate valve, also known as a sluice valve, is a valve which opens by lifting a round or
rectangular gate/wedge out of the path of the fluid. The distinct feature of a gate valve is the
sealing surfaces between the gate and seats are planar, so gate valves are often used when a
straight-line flow of fluid and minimum restriction is desired. The gate faces can be parallel, but
are most commonly wedge-shaped. Gate valves are primarily used to permit or prevent the flow
of liquids, but typical gate valves shouldn\'t be used for regulating flow, unless they are
specifically designed for that purpose. Because of their ability to cut through liquids, gate valves
are often used in the petroleum industry. For extremely thick fluids, a specialty valve often
known as a knife gate valve is used to cut through the liquid. On opening the gate valve, the flow
path is enlarged in a highly nonlinear manner with respect to percent of opening. This means that
flow rate does not change evenly with stem travel. Also, a partially open gate tends to vibrate
from the fluid flow. Most of the flow change occurs near shutoff with a relatively high fluid
velocity causing gate and seat wear and eventual leakage if u.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.

Content
4. What is valve?
A valve is a device that regulates, directs or controls the flow of a fluid by
opening, closing, or partially obstructing various passageways.
5. Valve Functions
Stopping and starting fluid flow.
Varying the amount of fluid flow.
Controlling the direction of fluid flow.
Regulating downstream system or process pressure.
Relieving component or piping over pressure
7. Globe Valve
A Globe valves is a linear motion valve and are
primarily designed to stop, start and regulate flow.
The flow pattern through a globe valve involves
changes in direction, resulting in greater
resistance to flow, causing high pressure drop.
The globe valve is an excellent valve to use for
on-off service, but is highly suited for frequent
cycling and control of fluids anywhere in
amount or volume between the open and closed
positions
8. Gate Valve
Gate valve is a sliding type of valve.
The gate slides down to close the valve.
In fully open conditions, the flow area is equal to the area of the pipe and
hence, there is negligible pressure drop across the valve.
Gate valves operate slowly.
9. Ball Valve
Advantages
• Maintains and regulates high volume, high
pressure, and high temp flow.
• No lubrication requirements.
• Time of valve operation is minimized.
• Can handle fluids with suspended solids.
Disadvantages
• Have relatively poor throttling characteristics.
• Difficult to clean, leads to contamination.
A ball valve is a rotational motion valve that uses a
ball-shaped disk to stop or start fluid flow.
10. Needle valve
A needle valve is a type of valve having a small port and a
threaded, needle-shaped plunger.
Needle valves are usually used in flow-metering
applications, especially when a constant, calibrated, low
flow rate must be maintained for some time.
11. Butterfly Valves
Butterfly valve is a simple system which has a rotating thin disc
rotating across the flow.
Quick opening valve.
Pressure drop across a butterfly valve is small.
Used with chemical or corrosive media.
A butterfly valve can be operated manually and automatically.
The effect on the fluid by the closing and opening of the disc is shown.
12. Diaphragm Valves
Diaphragm valves get their name from a flexible disc which comes into contact
with a seat at the top of the valve body to form a seal.
The valve body may be constructed from plastic, metal, wood or other
materials depending on the intended use.
Advantages
Valve construction prevents leakage of the fluid without the use of a
gland seal (packing)
Disadvantages
These types of valves are generally not suited for very high
temperature fluids and are mainly used on liquid systems.
13. Check Valve
The check valves are non-return valves.
These valves allow the fluid to flow only in one direction.
Check valve will be open only when the fluid is flowing in the allowed direction.
If the fluid flows in the opposite direction, the pressure in the opposite direction
closes the valve automatically.
These valves are important for preventing backflow to systems.
14. Safety valve
Safety valve is also called a pressure relief valve (PRV), which
automatically releases a substance from a boiler, pressure
vessel, or other system, when the pressure or temperature
exceeds to reference value/limits.
The primary purpose of a safety valve is the protection of life,
property and environment.
A safety valve is not a process valve or pressure regulator and
should not be misused as such. It should have to operate for one
purpose only: overpressure protection.
