Hola! My name is Flaco,
and I want to give you a
                    tour of the types of
                    joints in the human
                            body.

by Amber Fuhrer
Let me tell you a little about myself.
I live in a cemetery…
… and this year it is my job
to get everyone ready for the
Dia de los Muertos dance!
We celebrate every
year around the same
time as Halloween.
Since everyone here is a skeleton,
I have studied a lot about joints,
so I can tell them how to move
to the music!
OK, let’s talk about
movement and the
purpose of your joints…
What if we didn’t have joints?
If we tried to MOVE,
we would fall on our faces
like a stack of dominoes!
So, first of all, we have fixed, semi-
moveable, and moveable joints.
What good are fixed joints?
Fixed Joints

The skull has fixed joints.
As you grow, the bones come
together and become stronger to
protect your brain.
The pelvis is
also fixed.
Semi-moveable
     Your spine has semi-moveable joints
Joints give your body support and shape,
     that
but they still let you move a little.
Spongy tissue between vertebrae
keeps the bones from scraping
against each other…
Ouch!
…and lets you
sway to the music!
moveable Joints
are also known as synovial joints.
The space between the bones is
  filled with synovial fluid, which
  protects and lubricates the joints.
For dancing, moveable joints
are the most important
because they let us move our
arms, legs, and hips.
There are five types
of moveable joints.
1

    Hinge
The knee joint works like the
hinge on a door. It brings the
upper and lower leg bones closer
together so we can bend!
Sometimes hinge joints are
also called angular joints
because they form angles
like the letter V.
This is what happens
when your hinge joints
don’t work anymore.
You have to get a
replacement.
2
Shoulders
(compressed)
Ball and sockets joints are
the most moveable. You
can move your leg bone
around like this pestle or
stick in the bowl.
3
Basketball players can pivot
around on one foot to
reposition their bodies.
The pivot joint in your neck lets you
move your head from left to right
and back the same way a car tire
can be steered left to right.
…Or like the way an
oscillating fan moves
back and forth!
Did you know you have
two bones in the first part
of your arm?
You use small pivot joints
in your forearms to twist
the lid off a jar.
4
    Sadd
    le
The saddle joint lets
me cross my thumb
over my palm to help
hold things…
… and to show
the number four
with my hand!
OK. Now for the last type…
5
Gliding joints allow the small bones in
your wrists and ankles to easily glide
past each other for flexible movement.
Click the hand x-ray
for a review of the
types of moveable joints.

                     Que bueno!
Happy Dia de los Muertos!
Thanks for watching!
See you at the dance!
