A joint is where two bones meet, and can be movable or fixed. We have joints so we can perform simple tasks like eating that require bending movements. There are three main types of movable joints - hinge joints like in the elbows and knees, ball and socket joints like in the hips and shoulders, and gliding joints between vertebrae in the spine. Each joint type allows for different ranges of motion.
