• also called coleopteroid type
• axis of the head is horizontal
• in line with the axis of the body
• Mouth parts – foreword
• Eg: ground beetles.
2. HYPOGNATHOUS
• (Hypo – below, gnathous – jaw)
• also called orthopteroid type
• axis of the head is vertical
• Right angles to axis of the body
• Mouth parts - ventrally placed
& downwards
3. OPISTHOGNATHOUS
• (Opistho – behind ;
gnathous – jaw)
• also called hemipteroid
type
• Head is deflexed
• Mouth parts - directed
backwards & held in b/w
the fore legs
