Story clearly indicates what went wrong and accountability is taken
Majority of the story focuses on lessons learned (i.e. personal and
professional development)
Student shows what they would do differently if faced with the situation
again, or what they already did since (comeback story)
Generally aim to be: authentic, humble, accountable

Editor's Notes

  • #10 -We’ve been working a lot on figuring out your strengths -When we shift to skills matrix and employment in general, we want to be talking more about SKILLS -SKILLS ARE DIFFERENT FROM STRENGTHS – SKILLS ARE YOUR STRENGTHS TRANSLATED! -These are my top five strengths, translated into skills -Strengths are like descriptors of an individual, skills are the attributes that someone brings to a job
  • #11 Preface with “not everyone has work experience, but talk about volunteer or school” but make sure that it’s EMPLOYER CENTRIC!!!! Story is an enhancement of the skill. NAIL THE ACTION!!! action has to be ALL OF THEM! Result can be a TEAM result Link is the learning piece, what are you taking away from the situation MAX TWO STORIES FOR EACH SKILL! Put yourself in the shoes of an interviewer- think about what stories they would need to hear in order to help get the job!
  • #12 It’s a pyramid because it shows how much detail you use- interview you use just as much detail as SM but in Resume you are very brief. When explaining, take them through the motions and deconstruct it to teach them
  • #16 Go into detail of what the buzzwords on this slide means ex: authenticity Weight is one the actions steps of what you learned. Ensure that the failure is not EXTERNAL CIRCUMSTANCE but something THEY did! “They didn’t pick me” is NOT A FAILURE
  • #17 Preface this section- “why do you think employers want failure stories”
  • #21 PUT ON CHILL MUSIC! Opportunity for students to ask me questions and get free “office hours”
