Power lines can be used to transmit data through a technology called Power Line Telecommunications (PLT). PLT takes advantage of the fact that power lines already connect to nearly every building. It provides new services like remote electricity meter reading and broadband internet that are difficult for other technologies to implement. While power lines offer widespread connectivity and support growing information services, PLT has seen limited adoption due to a lack of standardization, unclear business incentives, and some interference and security concerns. Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) sends high-speed internet over power lines either within a home or as the main access method, but can face problems with equipment interference and responsibility for radio disruptions. More development is still needed to improve PLT
