A Definition of Collaborative vs Cooperative Learning
A Definition of Collaborative vs Cooperative Learning
Ted Panitz (1996)
[pic]
I have been searching for many years for the Holy Grail of interactive learning, a distinction between
collaborative and cooperative learning definitions. I am getting closer to my elusive goal all the time
but I am still not completely satisfied with my perception of the two concepts. I believe my confusion
arises when I look at processes associated with each concept and see some overlap or inter concept
usage. I will make a humble attempt to clarify this question by presenting my definitions and
reviewing those of other authors who have helped clarify my thinking.
Collaboration is a philosophy of interaction and personal lifestyle whereas cooperation is a ... Show

The major difference lies in the fact that cooperative deals exclusively with traditional (canonical)
knowledge while collaborative ties into the social constructivist movement, asserting that both
knowledge and authority of knowledge have changed dramatically in the last century. The result has
been a transition from foundational (cognitive) understanding of knowledge , to a nonfoundational
ground where we understand knowledge to be a social construct and learning a social process (Brufee,
Collaborative learning: Higher Education, Interdependence, and the Authority of Knowledge, 1993).
Rockwood states:
In the ideal collaborative environment, the authority for testing and determining the appropriateness of
the group product rests with, first, the small group, second, the plenary group (the whole class) and
finally (but always understood to be subject to challenge and revision) the requisite knowledge
community (i.e. the discipline: geography, history, biology etc.) The concept of non foundational
knowledge challenges not only the product acquired, but also the process employed in the acquisition
of foundational knowledge.
Most importantly, in cooperative, the authority remains with the instructor, who retains ownership of
the task, which involves either a closed or a closable (that is to say foundational) problem ( the
instructor knows or can predict the answer). In collaborative, the instructor once the task is set

Criminal Trial And The Judicial System Of England And Wales
In a criminal trial or a civil case, a jury or magistrate court in England and Wales is required to
determine and analyze the disputed factual issues. With such a requirement, expert witnesses in the
relevant field are called upon to assist the fact finding body interpret and understand evidence or
opinion with which such a body is unfamiliar. The current approach to the admissibility of expert
evidence within the judicial system of Wales and England is that of laissez faire (Akers, 2000). Within
laissez faire, a number of experts evidence or opinion are admitted in the jury or magistrate court

Hence, it gives equality in any decision made so after the hearing is adjourned, come different expert
opinion to enhance or influence the judge to make the right decision In the recent proposal for reform
in the admission of expert evidence, The Law Commission for England and Wales observed that the
the common law approach to the admissibility of expert opinion evidence is one of laissez faire, with
such evidence being admitted without sufficient regard to whether or not it is sufficiently reliable to be
considered by a jury (Akers, 2000). According to the Commission, this approach is unsatisfactory and
recommended that the admissibility of expert evidence should be considered in the criminal
investigation only if (1) it is provided beyond reasonable doubt that the person who is called upon as
an expert witness is skilled, experienced and qualified to give such evidence or testimonies and (2) the
court should properly scrutinize the expert evidence to ensure it contains scientific principles which
are admissible to the court and to the case in question. Under the proposal of the commission,
evidence, opinion or testimony over a crime will only be admitted if the strength of the evidence is
soundly based. For example, the experts evidence would not be admitted in the court of law if (a) it is
based on flawed data, (b) it is based on an unjustifiable assumption, (c)

Comparing The Story Of An Hour And Interlopers
The story of an hour and the interlopers are two completely different stories, most people would not
think that they had much, if anything in common. When I looked harder at these stories I noticed that
they have quite similar conclusions. In the story of an hour Louise Mallard is informed that her
husband has just died, she asks to be alone for a while and goes to her room. When she is in her room
she begins to have a strange sense of freedom. At first she does not want to accept this. Almost as soon
as she has embraced this new sense of freedom, she goes back down stairs and her husband walks in
the front door causing her new awakening to be dashed out of her reach. Which then causes her to die
of a heart attack. In the Interlopers Two

she being Brand / new by E. E. Cummings
In the poem, she being Brand/ new by E.E. Cummings, the writer has chosen to use symbols and
unique capitalization in parts of the poem to reference a sexual interaction with a woman. The opening
sentence using a capital B in she being Brand/ new (lines 1 2) leads the reader into the idea that the
woman he is with is a virgin and untouched. He never speaks of his actual sexual experience, but
gives readers an almost humorous ride of his sexual encounter. In lines 10 15, up, slipped the clutch
(and then somehow got into reverse she kicked what the hell) next minute I was back in neutral tried
and again slow ly; bare, l nudg. Ing readers will see the comparison of car parts not working correctly
and having to tinker with them to get them going with that of maybe a new sexual experience not
going right. The readers will see that the driver of the car would be considered a little self centered and
proud of his sexual abilities by the word choices of Cummings. In 1920 s when this poem was written
sex was seen as kind of a naughty, forbidden and sometimes hidden experience, Cummings uses the
car to exemplify how the rush of driving a car and the rush a sexual climax are similar. In using the
capital O in, her radiator made sure her springs were O (9) Cummings symbolizes the ultimate
orgasm. The poem continues throughout with stopping lines and pausing and starting lines much like a

Analysis Of Orson Welles And Herman Mankiewicz
Citizen Kane figures in one of the most influential, and greatest filmography works of all time.
However, the making of its fame was rather rough. Orson Welles and Herman Mankiewicz were the
screenwriters for this movie, Welles was the leading director; therefore, he had the final saying in the
contributions to the movie. Both writers worked separately when developing the story, only having the
main character defined: Charles Foster Kane it is pertinent to say that I think Foster is supposed to be
ironic considering his morose childhood . Welles had a rough childhood, which is portrayed in the
film, since he came from a broken home and lost his hardworking mother when he was nine. The
origins of Kane s personality is sort of like a mixture between allusions to Welles miserable childhood
due to his parents divorce, and later the death of his mother in his first ten years of life; and also an
exposé of William Hearst s life. Hearst is arguably one of the most influential American journalists
and main contributor of the creation of yellow journalism basically, headlines with information that
had almost no support for its claimings . Kane s character is mainly built out of these two pivotal
events, hence his childhood, passion for yellow journalism, and obsession with power over papers.
The category for this film is called film à clef, and just like roman à clef for novels, this means that the
work is describing real life situations, or characters are minimally changed

Chemotherapy In Children
Cancer starts when cells in a body start to grow out of control. Cells in almost any part of the body can
become cancer and can spread to other areas of the body. Cancer is challenging in both children and
adults and chemotherapy, how the cancer formed in the body, and getting diagnosed are some of the
difficult things. Compared to adults, children have a better response to chemotherapy. Children are
more responsive to chemotherapy than adults because children have vulnerable cancer cells which are
the ideal target for chemotherapy. The cells for the cancers more likely in children, like leukemia and
nervous system cancer, increase rapidly and they respond to chemotherapy in a more dramatic fashion.
Furthermore, most side effects of chemotherapy for children are temporary. ... Show more content on

Childhood cancers are often the result of DNA changes in cells that take place very early in their life,
sometimes before birth. Some children inherit DNA mutations from their parent which increases their
risks of cancer. Leukemia, a common childhood cancer, is caused by changes of DNA inside bone
marrow cells. There are two conditions that children can be born with that increase their chance of
getting cancer, Beckwith Wiedemann syndrome and Fanconi s anemia. Beckwith Wiedemann
syndrome is an overgrowth disorder and it can cause Wilms tumor, a type of tumor that starts in
kidneys. Fanconi anemia is inherited and it affects the bone marrow which can cause leukemia. Adults
can get cancer more ways than children. Environmental factors and lifestyle choices play a major role
in adults getting cancer. A major factor for cancer in America is obesity. Obesity will soon take over
tobacco as the number one risk for cancer. Obesity causes colon, rectum, kidney, pancreas and other
types of common cancers. Overexposure to UV lights increase the risk of melanoma. Finally, if a
woman is exposed to estrogen, she is more likely to get breast

Stakeholder for Staples
Introduction Stakeholders are individuals and constituencies that contribute, either voluntarily or
involuntarily, to its wealth creating capacity and activities, and who are therefore its potential
beneficiaries and/or risk bearers1. There are several different types of stakeholders associated with a
corporation, and those stakeholders can have different views and opinions on what corporation s goals
should be and how they should be running. I have interviewed three different stakeholders of Staples
Inc., an employee, a customer and a stock holder, to find their relationship between them and the firm.

Another question was whether or not they thought that the Staples Soul program was a good idea or
not. Again the customer and the employee had agreed that it was a good idea, but it was not important
to them. In fact Ms. Lam had stated that I don t really mind. Although I think that they should work on
their customer relations a little more. Mr. Esteves, the stockholder, found this program important due
to the fact that since it was instituted the stocks of Staples Inc. have been going up. Although all three
agree it is not a bad idea, Ms. Lam and Mr. Forgione do not find this type of program important to
them at all. The fact that they do not find this program of no importance is because it has absolutely no
affect on the customer or the employee stakeholders. The benefits of this program do not directly
impact a majority of its employees or its customers. It appears that the relationship between Staples
and its employee and customer stakeholders is a straight give take relationship, through the
perspective of the stakeholders. Ms. Lam, in answering about what type of relationship she had with
Staples said, I need supplies, they need money. They take my money, I take their supplies. While Mr.
Forgione stated, The only thing Staples has done for me is provide me with a paycheck every week
and some benefits. Next, I asked all three stakeholders to order which

Christianity Of Religion Essay
Religion: the best thing to ever happen to humanity or the one thing that is holding us back? While
there are many arguments and testimonies that support either side, there is a clear answer. Religion,
specifically judeo christianity, in the western world has an array of disastrous issues ranging from bias
teachings to abuse and hate crimes. There are countless examples of ways in which religion has, and is
continuing to regress society s views and morals. Ignorance and disdain from scientific fact, fear to act
upon natural human impulse, innumerable human rights violations and of course wars on religion, are
topics rarely discussed due to the concern of offending those who have a relationship with the creator.

Stephen Hawking, one of the greatest minds of our time said Before we understood science, it was
natural to believe that God created the universe, but now science offers a more convincing
explanation. He is absolutely correct. It is human nature to seek explanations for life s big questions.
Therefore, back when there was no understanding of much at all, the concept of God provided all the
answers. Now, however, with research and evidence to back up discoveries, it is irresponsible to
completely reject them. In history, an example of this is Galileo s theory of Heliocentrism. Because
society was ruled by a theocracy at the time, it was said that the earth was the center of the universe
and the sun revolved around it. Galileo s theory that the earth revolves around the sun and the sun was
the center of the universe, although not entirely correct, was an important breakthrough for science.
Galileo was convicted for having opinions that challenge scripture and was sentenced to house arrest
until he died. Although nothing this extreme occurs in the western world today, not much has changed
in terms of belief. Today, most churches have realized how ineffectual it is to fight science, and have
claimed that there are in fact no contradictions between science and religion. This is a case of telling
rather than showing. If churches still continue to believe in events such as God creating the universe in

Themes In The Bald Soprano
In this world where everyone seeks to be heard especially in an age of social media, words are
exchanged mechanically; words are spoken for the sake of speaking. People talk about unimportant
and pointless matters and treat them as one would the most important matters in the world. For
instance, many people spend a lot of time talking about gossips, money, social status, and other topics
of conversation that ultimately lack depth, significance, and meaning. This idea that people s priorities
are placed incorrectly emerges as one of the main themes of Eugene Ionesco s play The Bald Soprano.
Beneath the chaotic, hilarious, and seemingly nonsensical staging of the one act play Ang Sopranong
Kalbo, directed by Dexter M. Santos, which is Rolando Tinio s Filipino translation of Donald M.
Allen s English translation of Eugene Ionesco s The Bald Soprano, the play effectively emphasizes the
absurdity of people s preoccupations. By lessening its focus on other themes such as time and reality,
which are also fundamental themes of Ionesco s play, the adaptation depicts a stronger, more intense
absurdist play that questions the priorities of humans. In terms of characterization and plot, not much
has changed in the adaptation. This is probably because Ionesco s ... Show more content on

Defining Honesty Essay
Defining Honesty Winston Churchill once said, Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of

Honesty is classified as a noun in part of speech. Honesty has many similar meanings; such as
uprightness, morality, trustworthiness, goodness, scrupulousness, decency, rectitude, righteousness,
fairness, reliability and honor. These synonyms are all equal to truth. The meaning of honesty in this

never lies, respects others, and when she is tempted to cheat on her test, she overcomes with her power
of honesty. This fits the definition about truthfulness in everything.
There is also another different meaning of honesty, such as plants with flat papery seed pods: a hardy
European plant with purplish or white flowers and flat silvery seed pods that are often used for indoor
decoration. Its Latin name is Lunaria annua. It also called silver dollar, money plant, and satin flower.
This meaning is totally different than average people know about the honesty. Normally people won t
think honesty as a plant related thing. Many would be surprised by this definition. How many would
go and say honesty is a beautiful plant?
There can t be a society without any honest people, because that society would

for those who are starting out will have to work as hard to become successful in the robot industry.
Robots will be able to work around the clock if they are constructed to last a good amount of battery

to replace that individual. Thereby, everything will depend on how fast a machine can fuel back up.
There will not be fewer jobs, because every individual will have access to a robot as mentioned
earlier, although success will not from simply owning a robot but working with the robot in order to

Anonymous Anonymous, an infamous hacktivist group. Their slogan We are Anonymous. We are
Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us. Now, one can come to think that they kind of
sound like an underground rebel group. Which is what they are, but they do it all via the internet. Once
must also think, well how do they do it all via internet and not get caught? They tunnel all their nodes
and logs through private networks and encrypted chats. You may ask, what do they fight for? Well it s
obvious, they all fight for one thing: Freedom and a proper Government. You can come to this
conclusion just by taking a peek at their tweets, videos, speeches, and etc. It s obvious that
Anonymous s intended audience is anyone they can reach out to, not only does this hacktivist group

My Leadership Philosophy
With regards to leadership, my strength lies in my desire to help everyone. A leader has to put the
group first and make every decision with that principle in mind. When freshman approach me in the
hallway, eyes wide with terror and uncertainty, I stop and ask them what they need. If the track team
needs and extra runner for a race, even if I despise that race, I ll step up. My philosophy is to lead by
example, not by command. I ve found that simply telling people what to do is the most ineffective
way to actually get them to do it. For example, I am very passionate about track and want the track
team to do extremely well at state this year. Instead of giving a rousing speech about courage and
strength, I started training months in advance. By making myself better, I encourage others to be better
too. I m not the best on the team by a longshot, but by working hard I inspire others to be better than
me. My goal by the end of track season is not to be the best on the team, but for the rest of the team to
be better because of me. By doing that extra lap I hope to inspire others to do the same. ... Show more

Taking that final step and trusting that your decision is correct scares me. What if everyone suffers
because I m wrong? To overcome this, the only thing I can do is to take the leap. I will fail, and I have
failed many times already, but I ve also made the correct choices. By practicing failure, I m mastering
success. Another weakness of mine is the notion that my idea is always a good one. This sometimes
leads me to believe that, in a group project or something of the sort, we should always use my idea. In
a recent group project I took complete control without even realizing it. When I did realize it, I told
the group that I was sorry and stepped down in order to let everyone s ideas flow too. Instantly the

Poetry, By Billy Collins, The Writer
Poetry comes in many forms, rhythms, tones, and meanings whether metaphoric or realistic. One
thing, however, which is a common trait of poetry, is that they all carry a message to the reader. In
some poems the message appears very clear and understandable, while in others, the author may hide
the message within metaphors and imagery. In the poem Introduction to Poetry by Billy Collins, the
writer enlightens his reader with an important message that poetry is something to experience. He uses
this poem to instruct and challenge the reader to search line by line for deeper meanings and purpose
within the poetry they encounter. The reader can read more deeply by using critical and analytical
thinking rather than taking poem literally. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The last two stanzas, however, allude to a way of thinking that the message of poetry will simply and
vividly stand out and lead to a way that allows them to be taken literally or at face value. Also, the
writer s tone clearly shows in the last two stanzas: But all they want to do is tie the poem to a chair
with rope and torture a confession out of it. They begin beating it with a hose to find out what it really
means. (12 16) They emphasize the exact way of thinking that the writer is instructing against,
challenging the readers to use their critical thinking by example of the first five stanzas. Critical
thinking is what the poem Introduction to Poetry calls for the reader to draw on and is a skill that
people develop through time and experience. A report from The Institute for Academic Excellence
defines critical thinking as purposeful self regulatory judgment, which manifests itself in giving
reasonable consideration to the evidence, methods and conceptual structures within which a decision
is made about what to believe or what to do. Contingent on the learning condition of a classroom,
students should be acquainted with critical thinking and encouraged to begin practicing by the
instructors. To cultivate critical thinking, students need to be studying topics of interest. They need
meaningful discussions and exposure to others ideas in an atmosphere which supports the students
ideas and thinking. A topic of interest is most important

The Tasks Of A Freelancer
As 16th April is observed as Stress Awareness Day and April as Stress Awareness Month, I wish to
share a few tips that can help you all, specifically freelancers, to lead a stress free and happy life.
Nevertheless, stress is often contemplated as negative feeling, but preparing yourself to reducing and
pacing with it is the gateway to many great opportunities.
The tasks of a freelancer, is a slackly defined amalgam of projects, tasks, time, and a plethora of other
responsibilities to stretch you in all direction possible. There are times, it often happens to me, when it
all gets too much to handle and you burry under the weight of what seems to be almost impossible.
Any freelancer at some stage of his/her career is going to encounter such situation. But such moments
of anxiety are like water bubbles which fade away instantly. To alleviate stress and remain focused on
your business you can do a lot in your daily life. Here are some tips that have always worked as
panacea for me.
1. Optimistic Thinking: Positive thinking is a powerful weapon in weeding out the negative vibes.
Going Orwellian is not the solution, it means you appropriately address the negative and emphasize
the positive.
2. Take it lightly: Most of your worries are not within your control, especially if you are a freelancer.
Let the worries go. There is no point of worrying over something that is beyond your territory.
3. Relax: Take time off your schedule to learn some relaxation techniques and

Essay On Foreign Affairs
Trump s Travel Ban was halting immigration from seven dominantly Muslim nations. Trump wanted
to ensure that he is not admitting into our country the very threats our soldiers are fighting overseas.
Trump s Travel Ban put America in the danger of being isolated from other nations. On the other hand,
the American people flocked to international airports around the country to protest the order and show
their support for those affected by it. This indicates that the American people want to embrace
international relationships. This pattern of American attitude towards foreign affairs is very similar to
that from 1898 to 1945. American attitude towards foreign affairs has been gradually changing from

America did not want involvement, they just waited patiently and did not have the desire to fight back
after the explosion.
America started to increase its involvement in foreign affairs during World War l. On April 30, 1915,
Woodrow Wilson spoke in New York. Wilson said my interest in the neutrality of the United States is
not the small minded desire to keep out of trouble. To judge by my experience, I have never been able
to keep out of trouble. I have never looked for it, but I have always found it..... If a man is looking for
trouble that is the trouble of men in general and I can help a little, why, then I am in for it. Wilson s
words show that if a nation creates trouble for the whole world, he is willing to get involved and help
solve the problem. On May 27, 1916, Wilson spoke in Washington D.C. He said that the nations of the
world must in some way band themselves together to see that right prevails against any sort of selfish
aggression. Wilson realizes that it is important to connect with other nations to overcome aggression.
The United States would also do anything to secure their values. They are willing to become a partner
in any workable association of nations formed in order to realize these objects and make them secure
against violation. Americans are realizing that they need to work with other nations in order to make
sure American values are not violated. Throughout World War ll, America has moved more towards

How Has Space Exploration Changed Over The Years
Space exploration has changed drastically over the years. One of the main reasons for this is the
development of new technology. Scientists are constantly researching new topics and discussing ways
to improve spaceflight and space exploration. Not only has the design of various space crafts changed,
but the way space missions are carried out has changed. With new technology, scientists back at

The Ways We Lie And The World Of Doublespeak
In the essays The Ways We Lie by Stephanie Ericsson, and The World of Doublespeak by William
Lutz, there are two different angles on lying. They both have a different outlook on lying, Ericsson
believes that it is just a part of our language, and that these lies are not deliberate. Lutz believes that it
is more deliberate, and intentional. Both Ericsson and Lutz use anecdotes and stories as examples of
lies, while describing different kinds of lies.
The author s purpose in both of these essays are the same, to tell the world about lies people tell. In
The Ways We Lie Ericsson describes different ways people lie, while in The World of Doublespeak
Lutz goes into detail into one kind of lie, doublespeak, rather than multiple ways people

Dramatic Irony in the Crucible
English 10, essay
The Crucible, option 2
In The Crucible , Arthur Miller uses dramatic irony to create anxiety, frustration and to demonstrate
the tension between the people about the lies of witchcraft in Salem.
I. The author creates tension in the story by using Abigail who accuses innocent people of witchery.
1.) Abigail wants Elizabeth to get hanged so she can be back with John again.
2.) Abigail turns herself against Mary Warren after she confessed in court.
II. The author creates anxiety in the story by making the court so powerful.
1.) If the court thinks you are a witch, you can t defend yourself.
2.) The court believes the lies of Abigail which causes a lot of people to hang.

Abigail Williams, seventeen, enters a strikingly beautiful girl, an orphan, with an endless capacity for
dissembling. Here, the reader also knows that she is not always as she appears. The affair of John
Proctor and Abigail is another example of dramatic irony. We know what has happened between them
but the rest of the characters, except for Elizabeth, are still oblivious. Not only Abigail is lying about
this, but also John Proctor for the sake of his reputation in town.
A third instance of dramatic irony is the situation with the needle in the doll. With this, it was Abigail
´s goal to get Elizabeth Proctor accused of witchcraft. Mary Warren made this doll when Abigail was
sitting next to her. She left the needle inside. Mary gave the doll to Elizabeth as a gift. Abigail knew
the needle was in the doll, so she stabbed herself in the stomach with a needle. With this she made the
people believe Elizabeth used Voodoo on her and therefore used witchcraft. The audience knows this
is not true and that Abigail is a false and lying girl. We know she does this is because she wants to get
rid of Elizabeth. She is in the way of Abigail and that has still to do with the affair only the Proctors
and the audience know about.
When Elizabeth is asked to tell the truth about John Proctor being an adulterer is another part where
dramatic irony is used. She is a very honest woman but for the sake of her husband s good name she
lies and says that

Public Libraries Rethink Analysis
There are fact that we need to have a major rethink in how exactly the library should be serving the
public. Today, library still plays a vital role in the society. To survive in the digital age and stay
relevant, public libraries need to be brave and innovative. The advent of new technologies has
changed some of our reading habits. Some people think the traditional public libraries should develop
to E service libraries. But today, public libraries are at a turning point. To survive in the digital age and
stay relevant, they must embrace both the physical and virtual.

The first is the change in the bibliography. In the past, we must read the card catalog, due to the way
of a card catalog to find generally author, title, classification (or topics). Sometimes the reader has to
read large number of directories to find out several books. Today, the modern library has a computer
search directory; anyone can consult the library catalog with library networked at home or in office
terminal. People can check books name, author, category, theme, but also check the press, publication
year, ISBN, conference name, keywords, etc. So people save a lot of time to read the card.
In the rapid development of today s information superhighway, each library is connected to Internet.
People can experience high speed information now from the world s information highway libraries,
some libraries on the network also offers free text information, readers can see all kinds of plain text
or hypertext information on the computer. Thus, the scope of the library collection expanded, extended
to the every corner of the world industry, and has become a library without walls or virtual library.
Free library books borrowing are the most important function. However, compared to previous
readers, today s readers clearly expect that libraries must offer more than just books. Massive library
system reform means use of high tech; however, if lacking of overall strategy and clear goals, just

Police Enforcement Is An Evolving Agency Essay
Law enforcement has been an evolving agency just as many fields in the US. Most agencies have the
same goal, that is to prevent crime, investigate crime and apprehend criminals, maintain order, and
provide other miscellaneous services. The diversity in American cities is what makes law enforcement
unique, it has a huge impact and role as to how agencies operate with the citizens that live in those
communities. In the US police departments are more likely to use one of three or a combination of 3
police strategies: community policing, problem oriented policing and zero tolerance policing. With
that being said all of these serve a purpose and have negative and positives contributing effect onto
communities. Through my experience and knowledge I have learned from policing I would utilize a
combination of problem oriented policing and community policing if I were chief of police of a police
department. Although both styles of policing have their own goals and structures, problem oriented
policing seems to tie in with community policing. Utilizing these two styles would also help to bridge
the gap between the community and the police.
Community policing is a model of policing that stresses a two way working relationship between the
community and the police, in which the police become more integrated into the local community and
citizens assume an active role in crime control and prevention, as stated in the book The Police in
America. This concept of policing style involves

Bertolt Brecht was a German playwright, theatre critic,...
Bertolt Brecht was a German playwright, theatre critic, and director. He created and developed epic
theatre with the belief that theatre is not solely for entertainment but also tools for politics and social
activism. Previous theatre performances offered a form of escapism. The audience would become
emotionally invested in the performance. In contrast to the suspension of disbelief, Brecht never
wanted the audience to fall into the performance. He wanted the audience to make judgments on the
argument dealt in the play. The aim of epic theatre is to detach the audience from any emotional
connection in order for them to critically review the story. The ultimate goal of this theatre is creating
awareness of social surroundings and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to break the illusions Brecht used various techniques. Only the necessary props are used
during the play to portray themes or ideas to help indicate a character s status or profession. This
technique helps the audience acknowledge the idea of watching a play rather being emotionally
attached to the play. When there are few props prepared, the play itself does not look realistic causing
the audience to think about the situation. The performance seems realistic if minor props are also used
during the play. However, Brecht did not want this. He wanted the audience to be constantly aware of
the idea that they are watching a performance on stage. To prevent melodrama or emotion from
overtaking the audience, comic songs and music are often incorporated to provide emotional details.
This can be extremely disturbing to the audience unfamiliar to Theatre of Alienation yet it leads to
cheerful, upbeat tunes with disturbing lyrics. Musicians, lighting mechanics and changing costumes
are visible during the performance. This technique also allows that audience to be emotionally
detached from the story because they are aware of them watching a play. When audiences are not
suspended in disbelief, their intellectual response to the drama increases. The stage uses white light.

symbol of all we have learned this semester and our intent was to demonstrate that. This semester we
studied tribal dance, more specifically african dances, such as the Maasai Jumping Dance. We also
learned about war dances and the different reasons villages dance during times of war. We attempted
to include elements of all these different dance styles relating to our theme. This project is the only

Our dance supported this theme and story with the war dance we did in the beginning of the dance.
The warriors also got spears and supplies before waving goodbye and exiting the stage. The villagers
then performed a somber mournful dance. As the warriors come back onstage, the villagers were
looking around eager for the warriors return. Then we all came together and cheered then did a dance
celebrating the return. We emphasized the happiness of coming back from war safe.
We all worked well together and made equal contributions to the process. I choreographed the war
dance, and the elephant celebration dance movements. I also found the music for our performance.
London, Maddie, Keely, and Austin all worked together to choreograph the dance while the warriors
were off stage. Cody helped come up with the ideas of warriors and having spears and backpacks. I
don t remember all the details of what each group member did specifically, but we were all supportive
and also respectful. We worked off each others ideas and offered constructive comments rather than
bickering or being stubborn. I enjoyed working with my group and can say we are friends because of
it.
I feel our performance relates very well with the information we have learned in class. Our original

Gender Roles In The Daughters Of England
The text The Daughters of England , is a book written to provide guidance for young women,
pertaining to their character and behaviour; the book creates the framework for the role of women in
the household. It instructs that women must offer a virtuous influence on men as wives, mothers, and
daughters as part of their role within society. Estimated to have been written in 1842, in London,
Daughters of England was penned by Sarah Stickney Ellis; a popular author of Victorian conduct
literature. Ellis popularity implies that the source was widely circulated at the time, thus represents an
important view of contemporary society. This document reveals to us the ideals expected of middle
class women of the time, and the principles that were envisioned for them, relating in particular to the
separate spheres ideology.
This ideology outlines and endorses separate spheres for women and men, the domestic and public
spheres. This idea derived from the natural features of each gender. As women were considered to be
physically weaker than men, they were more suitable to belong to the private sphere. As Ellis writes,
women s strength is in her influence , demonstrating the view that, though physically fragile, women
were morally superior to men.
Raised in a single parent household, Ellis developed a strong sense of morals regarding home life.
Having helped raise her siblings, we can infer that this influenced her belief in the importance of
women in a matriarchal role. Ellis writes of the necessity to be educated properly, stating that school
education forms but a very small part of that which they will be expected to possess . This statement
can be reinforced from the Victorian notion that a woman of the upper or middle class, though did
receive an education, were expected to become accomplished as opposed to academically
knowledgeable. , thus Ellis s writings can be regarded as typical of the time.
The source tells young women that they must be content to be inferior to men , a statement that
corroborates with the contemporary laws of England. Society was deeply patriarchal, with men legally
authorised to use physical violence to chastise his wife as she belonged to him. Women who wanted to

Madison is a landmark Supreme Court case. Marbury v. Madison is one of the most influential and
groundbreaking legal proceeding in the history of the United States. The Marbury v. Madison case
was the first of its kind. Prior to Marbury vs. Madison, it was unclear whether the U.S. Supreme Court
had the power to determine the constitutionality of laws or what should happen when the Constitution
and a law were in conflict. Consequently the theory of every such government must be that an act of
the Legislature repugnant to the Constitution is void. With these words written by Chief Justice
Marshall, this case is significant because for the first time, the Supreme Court declared an act of
Congress unconstitutional because it was contrary to the Constitution. This decision was the
foundation for the Supreme Court s power of judicial review, the power by which the Court could
determine the constitutionality of laws passed by Congress. Marshall stated in the majority opinion
Court must either decide that case conformably to the law, disregarding the Constitution, or
conformably to the Constitution, disregarding the law, the Court must determine which of these
conflicting rules governs the case. This is of the very essence of judicial duty. Marshall is saying that
the Judicial has the decision on the two opposing laws and thus creating Judicial Review. Nothing in
the Constitution gave the Court this specific power. Marshall, however, believed that the

Objectivism And Cultural Relativism
1. a) Objectivism teaches that some morals will have a universal meaning essentially which is a good
point if it were not for social and cultural differences. One religious authority may believe that ritual
sacrifice is essential to the after life while another religious authority may believe killing of any kind
is a crime. Objectivism tries to validate everyone s morals which is a strength but fails to consider
moral view s can differ drastically such is the case in the ritual sacrifice. (P.22)
Cultural Relativism implies that culture decides what is moral or immoral. This belief defines in some
ways a boundary to morals where objectivism failed. Several religions homosexuals are considered
immoral and are judge according to the belief ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Individuals make their own morals can work except if a man takes a life based on the fact he does not
like them. Subjective relativism strength is that it listens to an individuals moral choice but fails to
acknowledge that not everyone will make the correct moral choice. (P.23 24)
Emotivism communicates that emotions are the highest authority on morals rather than
acknowledging logic. An angry nurse may shove a needle in a patients are on a bad day without
stopping to think about the patients pain emotions without logic can inflict harm. Emotions are never a
perfect science and can change radically from one instance to another. Emotivism has strength in that
it listens to emotions but emotions are often wrong when logic is taken away. (P.23)
b) I feel I relate best to cultural relativism. I was born into a Christian family and as such the bible is
my moral guide to life. I attempt to follow the laws of Christianity as I was raised into it similarly as I
follow the laws of the United States. I believe cultural relativism is very much for a passive person

Research Paper
Gerald Ford
What makes a great president? Being the President of the United States is one of the most difficult
positions to be in. And throughout history there has been presidents who faced crisis and made society
a better place, and then there were some who did not live up to their greatest opportunities. Gerald R.
Ford was the 38th President of the United States of America and was considered below average in all
aspects of his presidency including relations with foreign affairs, the economy and social/political
cases in our country. In fact, according to scores based on Fields of History, Law and Politics, he was
ranked as below average. This proves that he was not worthy compared to the levels of presidents
before his time. For the case of discussing Gerald Ford, one of the most important events of his time
as president is how he became one. After going into Republican politics at law school, he served in the
House of Representatives for decades being re elected twelve times. Even though he has never
achieved his main goal of becoming speaker of the House, he was still supported by many, even
including President Richard Nixon. In 1973, Spiro Agnew resigned the office of Vice President of the
United States. When there was no Vice President left, after pleading no contest to a change of income
tax evasion, President Richard Nixon was empowered by the 25th Amendment to appoint a new Vice

When Arjuna sacrifices his individuality, he sacrifices many things that make him human such as his
attachment towards his family and his emotions. Attachment toward loved ones is the natural state of
humans, we have a desire to protect and care for them. Additionally, emotions may be the source of
hardship for many people throughout their lives but they are a part of the human condition, without
emotions, we are nothing but unfeeling and cold. Even with adverse effects, it is these emotions that
allow us to define who we are and in turn make us individuals. Within The Hebrew Bible God
commands Adam and Eve to abstain from the fruit in Tree of Knowledge, however, after Eve is
enticed by the serpent she eats the fruit. By eating from the Tree of Knowledge Adam and Eve gain
awareness of their current situation, Lord God called to the human and said to him, Where are you?

develop emotions such as fear and a concept of right and wrong. Eve disobeys God because she falls
victim to her desires and curiosity, this very act grants her and Adam individuality. The traits that they
gain outweigh the punishment God enacts on them, while they are now subject to mortality, hunger,

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus And Mellitus
Introduction:
Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus is a disease that occurs when insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas are
damaged or are being destroyed (Mahan, Escott Stump Raymond, 2012). The gradual destruction of
the beta cells of the pancreas usually leads to complete insulin deficiency, which ultimately manifests
itself in the following symptoms at clinical onset: high blood glucose (hyperglycemia), frequent
urination (polyuria), excessive thirst (polydipsia), and a significant amount of weight loss,
dehydration, electrolyte disturbances and ketoacidosis , requiring dependency of exogenous insulin in
order to promote optimal glycemic control in order to prevent further more severe complications; such
as, ketoacidosis, microvascular diseases, macrovascular diseases, neuropathy, or worse Death (Mahan
et al., 2012). Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus can result from two existing forms: 1. Immune mediated
diabetes Mellitus, which is characterized by autoimmune destruction of the beta cells of the pancreas
and an idiopathic (unknown cause) commonly seen in ethnic groups of African or Asian descent
(Mahan et al., 2012). Of all diagnosed diabetes cases, prevalence of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus cases
account for 5% 10%, and although onset may present itself at any age, 70% of cases are diagnosed in
young adults (younger than age 30), with a peak in occurring incidences seen mostly in children and
adolescents (Mahan et al., 2012). In the United States, approximately 1 in every 400

Children Of God Through Faith
Beginning in 3:26, the NIV and NRSV translates, for you are all children of God through faith in
Christ Jesus. Here the word children translates in the Greek, téknon which means a child, descendant,
inhabitant. Téknon properly, a child; (figuratively) anyone living in full dependence on the heavenly
Father, i.e. fully (willingly) relying upon the Lord in glad submission. This prompts God to transform
them into His likeness. The NKJV translates, for you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
This word son translates in the Greek, hyiós. It emphasizes likeness of the believer to the heavenly
Father, i.e. resembling His character more and more by living in faith. The choice of the word son may
be in part because during biblical times a son was considered the inheritor of land, property, and
family wealth. Daughters were not typically ones to inherit anything. Further, each of the three
translations uses the word all . The word all in the Greek translates, pas . Pás ( each, every ) means all
in the sense of each (every) part that applies. The emphasis of the total picture then is on one piece at a
time. By all it is not excluding anyone or singling out one group of people (as described in 3:28).

Stylistic Prose Techniques In Cry, The Beloved Country By...
Stylistic prose technique 1: IMAGERY Authors who use imagery wish to give the readers a physical
feeling of literature while reading any sort of piece. It allows for the audience to connect to the
characters on a deeper level by having them experience the same feelings, smells, noises, etc, as did
the roles in the novel. Alan Paton uses a strong voice packed with imagery in his passage, For they
grow red and bare; they cannot hold the rain and mist, and the streams are dry in the kloofs. Too many
cattle feed upon the grass, and too many fires have burned it. Stand shod upon it, for it is coarse and
sharp, and the stones cut under the feet. It is not kept or guarded, or cared for, it no longer keeps men,
guards men, cares for men (Paton, 34). The overwhelming senses of touch and vision are more than
prevalent in this brief passage, with Paton perfectly conveying the atmosphere of rural South Africa in
the 1940 s. The reader gets a catholic impression of the arid climate as well as the deteriorated lands
on which it rests. By including this in his novel, Alan Paton establishes a thorough setting, one of
which the reader can fully understand for the remaining duration of Cry, The Beloved Country.
Stylistic prose technique 2: DRAMATIC IRONY In short, dramatic irony is in any given literary
scenario when future actions can be accurately anticipated by the readers but not the characters. It
often includes cliches and is used by authors wishing to give their audience insight that their
characters do not yet have. Powerful dramatic irony is demonstrated in the scene: Shall I get your
ticket for you, umfundisi? Then you need not lose your place in the line while I go to the ticket
office... As though he has suddenly though of something he left the line, and walked to the corner, but
there was no sign of the young man... Where is the ticket office my friend? You get your ticket on the
bus. There is no ticket office (Paton, 49). Alan Paton is able to show how vulnerable and naïve
Stephen Kumalo is to the big city; using something so predictable as a sly, nevertheless, predictable
con artist, he shows how foreign lies and deceit are to the pastor.
Stylistic prose technique 3: LOGOS Logos is a stylistic prose

Taking a Look at Virtualization
VIRTUALIZATION Virtualization is a concept in which access to a single underlying piece of
hardware, like a server ,is coordinated so that multiple guest operating systems can share that single
piece of hardware ,with no guest operating system being aware that it is actually sharing anything at
all. Working mechanism Virtualization software tackles the issue by empowering many operating
systems and applications to run on one physical server or host. Each independent virtual machine is
secluded from the others, and uses as a great part the host s computing resources. Contrast b/w (OS)
the Guest OS The host is the virtual machine host server; the underlying hardware that gives
computing resources, for example processing power, memory, disk and network I/O etc. The guest is a
totally separate and independent instance of an operating system and application software. Guests are
the virtual workloads that dwell on a host virtual machine and contribute in that server s computing
resources. Packages Hardware virtualization alludes to the production of a virtual machine that
demonstrations like a true computer with an operating system. Software executed on these virtual
machines is divided from the underlying hardware resources. Desktop virtualization is the idea of
differentiating the logical desktop from the physical machine .One type of desktop virtualization,
virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), could be thought as a more advanced form of hardware
virtualization.

Gandhi and the Journey of Independence
Intorduction
In History, we have always learned about heroes, leaders, and people who made accomplishments that
in a way have changed the world. We live for what others have done. Any courageous step taken by an
individual in order to achieve a goal, a belief, and seek for a right, comes only from a person with
leadership, huge spirit, and greatness. We have always looked back at leaders in our history that have
made life easier for us. For that, I would like to write about an extraordinary personality that has
achieved a big, difficult step for the good of Indians. Mohandas Gandhi is considered for many people
the man of the century. This poor man has done what powerful political rulers couldn t do. The
Mahatma had fought and joined many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He started thinking and planning based on his thoughts and ideas that he mostly had learned from
several thinkers, and this is where he planned his first Satyagraha. Influenced by a variety of writers
and thinkers, including Tolstoy, Thoreau and Jesus Christ, Gandhi developed the Satyagraha (
devotion to truth ), a new non violent way to redress wrongs. (BBC.co, 2006)
Success of Satyagraha
He was interested in religions and ethics early in his childhood, but he started studying them later in
life. In his first year in South Africa he read quite eighty books , most of them on religion. (BBC.com,
2006) Thoreau was among his favorite writers, as he remarked the idea of civil disobedience into
Gandhi s thoughts. Tolstoy as well had a big influence on Gandhi. Tolstoy s bold idealism and fearless
candour gripped him, his Christian anarchism dissipated the spell of institutional religion. Tolstoy s
emphasis on the necessity of an accord between moral principles and daily life confirmed his own
strivings for self improvement. (BBC.com, 2006) Gandhi started teaching Indians about the civil
disobedience, as they started to disobey and challenge the humiliating laws in a meant that the Indians
would disobey the fair laws in a peacefully, quite, and nonviolence way. If they were attacked,
punished or imprisoned, they would allow it

CASE FINDING AND EVALUATING FREIGHT FORWARDERS
FINDING AND EVALUATING FREIGHT FORWARDERS
This is a team assignment to be prepared in groups of 3 4 students. Some, probably not all but this
depends on timing, may be asked to present your findings to the group. Presentations should be
scheduled for roughly 5 (at most 10) minutes.
Growth in international trade has increased the importance of logistics and international transportation
as strategic tools for achieving competitive advantage. One solution is to take advantage of the
services of a freight forwarder. The evaluation and selection of a freight forwarder is a critical
strategic decision for managers involved in international operations. In this Management Skill Builder,
we focus on a basic approach for evaluating freight ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
8. What types of other services does the forwarder provide? Examples of these include customs
brokerage, logistics management, consulting on international shipments, and EDI services. For
example, using EDI, the exporter can transmit exporting documentation to the forwarder, and track the
location and status of international shipments.
Based on the information collected above, make a recommendation on which of the three freight
forwarders you believe your firm should employ. Be sure to justify your answer, by summarizing the
information gathered in response to the above questions.
When seeking a freight forwarder, the above questions address only some of the issues that you might
face in the real world of international business. In a real situation, you would likely seek answers to
other questions as well, depending on the firm s situation, regarding issues such as the type of product,
destination, size of shipment, and available exporter resources. Other issues to investigate include
product/service specialization, responsiveness and attention to exporter needs, financing capabilities,
financial position, and pricing, as well as the forwarder s efficiency and reliability. Many of the
evaluation criteria used in selection are subjective and therefore not easily quantifiable. It is critical to
evaluate potential freight forwarders in both quantitative and qualitative terms.

The Old Fairy Tale By Charles Perrault And The 1990s Movie...
In everyday life, people are given roles to play; doctors are to heal the wounded, officers are to
maintain order in society and teachers are to guide the youth onto the right path. In the past, each
gender had to behave a certain way, the men were the strong worker of the home, whom provided the
income for the family, while as the women were the gentle angels at home, whom took care of the
children and housework. If the women were to defy these roles, they would be look down upon and be
treated worse. However, time has change, these roles are no longer black and white; there is no longer
a certain way a woman is supposed to act, modern women are depicted differently from the way they
were in the past, this is due to the new norms in society that has been molded throughout time. This
can be proven with the old fairy tale Cinderella by Charles Perrault and the 1990s movie Pretty
Woman directed by Garry Marshall.
To begin with, these two story and film both revolved around a woman who goes through many
challenges and then found the love of their life, but the way they are depicted as are completely
different from each other. Perrault s tale of Cinderella is set during the olden time. The title named
protagonist of this story is portrayed as a pretty young woman whose daily life consisted of
housework and obeying her stepmother whom was quite wicked and haughty (Perrault 16). Cinderella
on the other hand was a woman of parallel goodness and sweetness (Perrault 16) who

Justice In The Wanderer And Beowulf
History has shown that during the Anglo Saxon time period, the ideals and values of the people were
very important to them. The Anglo Saxons were a people that inhabited modern day Britain. They
migrated from the western part of the continent of Europe to Britain during the 5th century. The time
period that Anglo Saxon people inhabited Britain became known as the Anglo Saxon period in English
history. This period lasted between 500 1066 AD. During this time period, stories had not yet begun to
be printed into books, so stories were spread by word of mouth, and became known as epic poems.
Later in history, a book was developed called The Exeter, which was a gathering of anonymous epic
poems from the Anglo Saxon period, and within the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During that time period, a king was the most important person to someone and he was regarded almost
as high as a god would be. Because of this high regard for a king, loyalty to that king and acting on his
behalf was extremely important. This is exemplified in The Wanderer when the narrator states I might
find one who in mead hall might accept my affection, or on me, friendless, might wish consolation,
offer me joy (Lines 27 29). This quote shows that the narrator in The Wanderer is searching for a king
to serve because he has lost his. It is also shown that he finds support and joy in having a king to look
towards for guidance. Likewise, in Beowulf his purpose is to serve a king that is not his own as stated
in lines 415 426, So every elder and experienced councilman among my people supported my resolve
come here to you, King Hrothgar, because all knew of my awesome strength. They had seen me
boltered in the blood of the enemies when I battled and bound five beasts, raided a troll next and in the
night sea slaughtered sea brutes. I have suffered extremes and avenged the Geats Now I mean to be a
match for Grendel, settle the outcome in single combat (Lines 415 426). This quotation exemplifies
Beowulf s need to help the king, Hrothgar, defeat Grendel, because loyalty and seeking justice on
behalf of the king was his

  • 2. A Definition of Collaborative vs Cooperative Learning A Definition of Collaborative vs Cooperative Learning Ted Panitz (1996) [pic] I have been searching for many years for the Holy Grail of interactive learning, a distinction between collaborative and cooperative learning definitions. I am getting closer to my elusive goal all the time but I am still not completely satisfied with my perception of the two concepts. I believe my confusion arises when I look at processes associated with each concept and see some overlap or inter concept usage. I will make a humble attempt to clarify this question by presenting my definitions and reviewing those of other authors who have helped clarify my thinking. Collaboration is a philosophy of interaction and personal lifestyle whereas cooperation is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The major difference lies in the fact that cooperative deals exclusively with traditional (canonical) knowledge while collaborative ties into the social constructivist movement, asserting that both knowledge and authority of knowledge have changed dramatically in the last century. The result has been a transition from foundational (cognitive) understanding of knowledge , to a nonfoundational ground where we understand knowledge to be a social construct and learning a social process (Brufee, Collaborative learning: Higher Education, Interdependence, and the Authority of Knowledge, 1993). Rockwood states: In the ideal collaborative environment, the authority for testing and determining the appropriateness of the group product rests with, first, the small group, second, the plenary group (the whole class) and finally (but always understood to be subject to challenge and revision) the requisite knowledge community (i.e. the discipline: geography, history, biology etc.) The concept of non foundational knowledge challenges not only the product acquired, but also the process employed in the acquisition of foundational knowledge. Most importantly, in cooperative, the authority remains with the instructor, who retains ownership of the task, which involves either a closed or a closable (that is to say foundational) problem ( the instructor knows or can predict the answer). In collaborative, the instructor once the task is set transfers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hence, it gives equality in any decision made so after the hearing is adjourned, come different expert opinion to enhance or influence the judge to make the right decision In the recent proposal for reform in the admission of expert evidence, The Law Commission for England and Wales observed that the the common law approach to the admissibility of expert opinion evidence is one of laissez faire, with such evidence being admitted without sufficient regard to whether or not it is sufficiently reliable to be considered by a jury (Akers, 2000). According to the Commission, this approach is unsatisfactory and recommended that the admissibility of expert evidence should be considered in the criminal investigation only if (1) it is provided beyond reasonable doubt that the person who is called upon as an expert witness is skilled, experienced and qualified to give such evidence or testimonies and (2) the court should properly scrutinize the expert evidence to ensure it contains scientific principles which are admissible to the court and to the case in question. Under the proposal of the commission, evidence, opinion or testimony over a crime will only be admitted if the strength of the evidence is soundly based. • 5. Comparing The Story Of An Hour And Interlopers The story of an hour and the interlopers are two completely different stories, most people would not think that they had much, if anything in common. When I looked harder at these stories I noticed that they have quite similar conclusions. In the story of an hour Louise Mallard is informed that her husband has just died, she asks to be alone for a while and goes to her room. When she is in her room she begins to have a strange sense of freedom. At first she does not want to accept this. Almost as soon as she has embraced this new sense of freedom, she goes back down stairs and her husband walks in the front door causing her new awakening to be dashed out of her reach. Which then causes her to die of a heart attack. In the Interlopers Two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Implications of the Literary Techniques Used in “she being... she being Brand / new by E. E. Cummings In the poem, she being Brand/ new by E.E. Cummings, the writer has chosen to use symbols and unique capitalization in parts of the poem to reference a sexual interaction with a woman. The opening sentence using a capital B in she being Brand/ new (lines 1 2) leads the reader into the idea that the woman he is with is a virgin and untouched. He never speaks of his actual sexual experience, but gives readers an almost humorous ride of his sexual encounter. The readers will see that the driver of the car would be considered a little self centered and proud of his sexual abilities by the word choices of Cummings. In 1920 s when this poem was written sex was seen as kind of a naughty, forbidden and sometimes hidden experience, Cummings uses the car to exemplify how the rush of driving a car and the rush a sexual climax are similar. • 7. Analysis Of Orson Welles And Herman Mankiewicz Citizen Kane figures in one of the most influential, and greatest filmography works of all time. However, the making of its fame was rather rough. Orson Welles and Herman Mankiewicz were the screenwriters for this movie, Welles was the leading director; therefore, he had the final saying in the contributions to the movie. Both writers worked separately when developing the story, only having the main character defined: Charles Foster Kane it is pertinent to say that I think Foster is supposed to be ironic considering his morose childhood . Welles had a rough childhood, which is portrayed in the film, since he came from a broken home and lost his hardworking mother when he was nine. The origins of Kane s personality is sort of like a mixture between allusions to Welles miserable childhood due to his parents divorce, and later the death of his mother in his first ten years of life; and also an exposé of William Hearst s life. Hearst is arguably one of the most influential American journalists and main contributor of the creation of yellow journalism basically, headlines with information that had almost no support for its claimings . Kane s character is mainly built out of these two pivotal events, hence his childhood, passion for yellow journalism, and obsession with power over papers. The category for this film is called film à clef, and just like roman à clef for novels, this means that the work is describing real life situations, or characters are minimally changed ... Cancer is challenging in both children and adults and chemotherapy, how the cancer formed in the body, and getting diagnosed are some of the difficult things. Compared to adults, children have a better response to chemotherapy. Children are more responsive to chemotherapy than adults because children have vulnerable cancer cells which are the ideal target for chemotherapy. Although I think that they should work on their customer relations a little more. Mr. Esteves, the stockholder, found this program important due to the fact that since it was instituted the stocks of Staples Inc. have been going up. Although all three agree it is not a bad idea, Ms. Lam and Mr. Forgione do not find this type of program important to them at all. The fact that they do not find this program of no importance is because it has absolutely no affect on the customer or the employee stakeholders. The benefits of this program do not directly impact a majority of its employees or its customers. It appears that the relationship between Staples and its employee and customer stakeholders is a straight give take relationship, through the perspective of the stakeholders. Ms. Lam, in answering about what type of relationship she had with Staples said, I need supplies, they need money. They take my money, I take their supplies. While there are many arguments and testimonies that support either side, there is a clear answer. Religion, specifically judeo christianity, in the western world has an array of disastrous issues ranging from bias teachings to abuse and hate crimes. There are countless examples of ways in which religion has, and is continuing to regress society s views and morals. Stephen Hawking, one of the greatest minds of our time said Before we understood science, it was natural to believe that God created the universe, but now science offers a more convincing explanation. He is absolutely correct. It is human nature to seek explanations for life s big questions. Therefore, back when there was no understanding of much at all, the concept of God provided all the answers. Now, however, with research and evidence to back up discoveries, it is irresponsible to completely reject them. In history, an example of this is Galileo s theory of Heliocentrism. Because society was ruled by a theocracy at the time, it was said that the earth was the center of the universe and the sun revolved around it. Galileo s theory that the earth revolves around the sun and the sun was the center of the universe, although not entirely correct, was an important breakthrough for science. Galileo was convicted for having opinions that challenge scripture and was sentenced to house arrest until he died. Although nothing this extreme occurs in the western world today, not much has changed in terms of belief. Today, most churches have realized how ineffectual it is to fight science, and have claimed that there are in fact no contradictions between science and religion. This is a case of telling rather than showing. If churches still continue to believe in events such as God creating the universe in six ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Themes In The Bald Soprano In this world where everyone seeks to be heard especially in an age of social media, words are exchanged mechanically; words are spoken for the sake of speaking. People talk about unimportant and pointless matters and treat them as one would the most important matters in the world. For instance, many people spend a lot of time talking about gossips, money, social status, and other topics of conversation that ultimately lack depth, significance, and meaning. This idea that people s priorities are placed incorrectly emerges as one of the main themes of Eugene Ionesco s play The Bald Soprano. Beneath the chaotic, hilarious, and seemingly nonsensical staging of the one act play Ang Sopranong Kalbo, directed by Dexter M. Santos, which is Rolando Tinio s Filipino translation of Donald M. Allen s English translation of Eugene Ionesco s The Bald Soprano, the play effectively emphasizes the absurdity of people s preoccupations. By lessening its focus on other themes such as time and reality, which are also fundamental themes of Ionesco s play, the adaptation depicts a stronger, more intense absurdist play that questions the priorities of humans. When freshman approach me in the hallway, eyes wide with terror and uncertainty, I stop and ask them what they need. If the track team needs and extra runner for a race, even if I despise that race, I ll step up. My philosophy is to lead by example, not by command. I ve found that simply telling people what to do is the most ineffective way to actually get them to do it. For example, I am very passionate about track and want the track team to do extremely well at state this year. Instead of giving a rousing speech about courage and strength, I started training months in advance. By making myself better, I encourage others to be better too. I m not the best on the team by a longshot, but by working hard I inspire others to be better than me. In the poem Introduction to Poetry by Billy Collins, the writer enlightens his reader with an important message that poetry is something to experience. The Tasks Of A Freelancer As 16th April is observed as Stress Awareness Day and April as Stress Awareness Month, I wish to share a few tips that can help you all, specifically freelancers, to lead a stress free and happy life. Nevertheless, stress is often contemplated as negative feeling, but preparing yourself to reducing and pacing with it is the gateway to many great opportunities. The tasks of a freelancer, is a slackly defined amalgam of projects, tasks, time, and a plethora of other responsibilities to stretch you in all direction possible. There are times, it often happens to me, when it all gets too much to handle and you burry under the weight of what seems to be almost impossible. Any freelancer at some stage of his/her career is going to encounter such situation. But such moments of anxiety are like water bubbles which fade away instantly. To alleviate stress and remain focused on your business you can do a lot in your daily life. Here are some tips that have always worked as panacea for me. 1. I have never looked for it, but I have always found it..... If a man is looking for trouble that is the trouble of men in general and I can help a little, why, then I am in for it. Wilson s words show that if a nation creates trouble for the whole world, he is willing to get involved and help solve the problem. On May 27, 1916, Wilson spoke in Washington D.C. He said that the nations of the world must in some way band themselves together to see that right prevails against any sort of selfish aggression. Wilson realizes that it is important to connect with other nations to overcome aggression. The United States would also do anything to secure their values. They are willing to become a partner in any workable association of nations formed in order to realize these objects and make them secure against violation. Americans are realizing that they need to work with other nations in order to make sure American values are not violated. Throughout World War ll, America has moved more towards ... Here, the reader also knows that she is not always as she appears. The affair of John Proctor and Abigail is another example of dramatic irony. We know what has happened between them but the rest of the characters, except for Elizabeth, are still oblivious. Not only Abigail is lying about this, but also John Proctor for the sake of his reputation in town. A third instance of dramatic irony is the situation with the needle in the doll. With this, it was Abigail ´s goal to get Elizabeth Proctor accused of witchcraft. Mary Warren made this doll when Abigail was sitting next to her. She left the needle inside. Mary gave the doll to Elizabeth as a gift. Abigail knew the needle was in the doll, so she stabbed herself in the stomach with a needle. With this she made the people believe Elizabeth used Voodoo on her and therefore used witchcraft. The audience knows this is not true and that Abigail is a false and lying girl. We know she does this is because she wants to get rid of Elizabeth. She is in the way of Abigail and that has still to do with the affair only the Proctors and the audience know about. When Elizabeth is asked to tell the truth about John Proctor being an adulterer is another part where dramatic irony is used. Most agencies have the same goal, that is to prevent crime, investigate crime and apprehend criminals, maintain order, and provide other miscellaneous services. The diversity in American cities is what makes law enforcement unique, it has a huge impact and role as to how agencies operate with the citizens that live in those communities. In the US police departments are more likely to use one of three or a combination of 3 police strategies: community policing, problem oriented policing and zero tolerance policing. With that being said all of these serve a purpose and have negative and positives contributing effect onto communities. Through my experience and knowledge I have learned from policing I would utilize a combination of problem oriented policing and community policing if I were chief of police of a police department. Although both styles of policing have their own goals and structures, problem oriented policing seems to tie in with community policing. He created and developed epic theatre with the belief that theatre is not solely for entertainment but also tools for politics and social activism. Previous theatre performances offered a form of escapism. The audience would become emotionally invested in the performance. In contrast to the suspension of disbelief, Brecht never wanted the audience to fall into the performance. He wanted the audience to make judgments on the argument dealt in the play. Only the necessary props are used during the play to portray themes or ideas to help indicate a character s status or profession. This technique helps the audience acknowledge the idea of watching a play rather being emotionally attached to the play. When there are few props prepared, the play itself does not look realistic causing the audience to think about the situation. The performance seems realistic if minor props are also used during the play. However, Brecht did not want this. He wanted the audience to be constantly aware of the idea that they are watching a performance on stage. To prevent melodrama or emotion from overtaking the audience, comic songs and music are often incorporated to provide emotional details. This can be extremely disturbing to the audience unfamiliar to Theatre of Alienation yet it leads to cheerful, upbeat tunes with disturbing lyrics. Musicians, lighting mechanics and changing costumes are visible during the performance. This technique also allows that audience to be emotionally detached from the story because they are aware of them watching a play. • 31. Gender Roles In The Daughters Of England The text The Daughters of England , is a book written to provide guidance for young women, pertaining to their character and behaviour; the book creates the framework for the role of women in the household. It instructs that women must offer a virtuous influence on men as wives, mothers, and daughters as part of their role within society. Estimated to have been written in 1842, in London, Daughters of England was penned by Sarah Stickney Ellis; a popular author of Victorian conduct literature. Ellis popularity implies that the source was widely circulated at the time, thus represents an important view of contemporary society. This document reveals to us the ideals expected of middle class women of the time, and the principles that were envisioned for them, relating in particular to the separate spheres ideology. This ideology outlines and endorses separate spheres for women and men, the domestic and public spheres. This idea derived from the natural features of each gender. As women were considered to be physically weaker than men, they were more suitable to belong to the private sphere. As Ellis writes, women s strength is in her influence , demonstrating the view that, though physically fragile, women were morally superior to men. Raised in a single parent household, Ellis developed a strong sense of morals regarding home life. Having helped raise her siblings, we can infer that this influenced her belief in the importance of women in a matriarchal role. Ellis writes of the necessity to be educated properly, stating that school education forms but a very small part of that which they will be expected to possess . This statement can be reinforced from the Victorian notion that a woman of the upper or middle class, though did receive an education, were expected to become accomplished as opposed to academically knowledgeable. , thus Ellis s writings can be regarded as typical of the time. The source tells young women that they must be content to be inferior to men , a statement that corroborates with the contemporary laws of England. Society was deeply patriarchal, with men legally authorised to use physical violence to chastise his wife as she belonged to him. Women who wanted to separate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus And Mellitus Introduction: Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus is a disease that occurs when insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas are damaged or are being destroyed (Mahan, Escott Stump Raymond, 2012). The gradual destruction of the beta cells of the pancreas usually leads to complete insulin deficiency, which ultimately manifests itself in the following symptoms at clinical onset: high blood glucose (hyperglycemia), frequent urination (polyuria), excessive thirst (polydipsia), and a significant amount of weight loss, dehydration, electrolyte disturbances and ketoacidosis , requiring dependency of exogenous insulin in order to promote optimal glycemic control in order to prevent further more severe complications; such as, ketoacidosis, microvascular diseases, macrovascular diseases, neuropathy, or worse Death (Mahan et al., 2012). Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus can result from two existing forms: 1. Immune mediated diabetes Mellitus, which is characterized by autoimmune destruction of the beta cells of the pancreas and an idiopathic (unknown cause) commonly seen in ethnic groups of African or Asian descent (Mahan et al., 2012). This prompts God to transform them into His likeness. The NKJV translates, for you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. This word son translates in the Greek, hyiós. It emphasizes likeness of the believer to the heavenly Father, i.e. resembling His character more and more by living in faith. The choice of the word son may be in part because during biblical times a son was considered the inheritor of land, property, and family wealth. Daughters were not typically ones to inherit anything. Alan Paton uses a strong voice packed with imagery in his passage, For they grow red and bare; they cannot hold the rain and mist, and the streams are dry in the kloofs. Too many cattle feed upon the grass, and too many fires have burned it. Stand shod upon it, for it is coarse and sharp, and the stones cut under the feet. It is not kept or guarded, or cared for, it no longer keeps men, guards men, cares for men (Paton, 34). The overwhelming senses of touch and vision are more than prevalent in this brief passage, with Paton perfectly conveying the atmosphere of rural South Africa in the 1940 s. The reader gets a catholic impression of the arid climate as well as the deteriorated lands on which it rests. By including this in his novel, Alan Paton establishes a thorough setting, one of which the reader can fully understand for the remaining duration of Cry, The Beloved Country. Stylistic prose technique 2: DRAMATIC IRONY In short, dramatic irony is in any given literary scenario when future actions can be accurately anticipated by the readers but not the characters. It often includes cliches and is used by authors wishing to give their audience insight that their characters do not yet have. Powerful dramatic irony is demonstrated in the scene: Shall I get your ticket for you, umfundisi? Then you need not lose your place in the line while I go to the ticket office... As though he has suddenly though of something he left the line, and walked to the corner, but there was no sign of the young man... Where is the ticket office my friend? You get your ticket on the bus. There is no ticket office (Paton, 49). Alan Paton is able to show how vulnerable and naïve Stephen Kumalo is to the big city; using something so predictable as a sly, nevertheless, predictable con artist, he shows how foreign lies and deceit are to the pastor. Stylistic prose technique 3: LOGOS Logos is a stylistic prose ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Taking a Look at Virtualization VIRTUALIZATION Virtualization is a concept in which access to a single underlying piece of hardware, like a server ,is coordinated so that multiple guest operating systems can share that single piece of hardware ,with no guest operating system being aware that it is actually sharing anything at all. Working mechanism Virtualization software tackles the issue by empowering many operating systems and applications to run on one physical server or host. Each independent virtual machine is secluded from the others, and uses as a great part the host s computing resources. Contrast b/w (OS) the Guest OS The host is the virtual machine host server; the underlying hardware that gives computing resources, for example processing power, memory, disk and network I/O etc. The guest is a totally separate and independent instance of an operating system and application software. Guests are the virtual workloads that dwell on a host virtual machine and contribute in that server s computing resources. Packages Hardware virtualization alludes to the production of a virtual machine that demonstrations like a true computer with an operating system. Software executed on these virtual machines is divided from the underlying hardware resources. Desktop virtualization is the idea of differentiating the logical desktop from the physical machine .One type of desktop virtualization, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), could be thought as a more advanced form of hardware virtualization. ... Tolstoy s bold idealism and fearless candour gripped him, his Christian anarchism dissipated the spell of institutional religion. Tolstoy s emphasis on the necessity of an accord between moral principles and daily life confirmed his own strivings for self improvement. Examples of these include customs brokerage, logistics management, consulting on international shipments, and EDI services. Based on the information collected above, make a recommendation on which of the three freight forwarders you believe your firm should employ. Be sure to justify your answer, by summarizing the information gathered in response to the above questions. When seeking a freight forwarder, the above questions address only some of the issues that you might face in the real world of international business. In a real situation, you would likely seek answers to other questions as well, depending on the firm s situation, regarding issues such as the type of product, destination, size of shipment, and available exporter resources. • 44. The Old Fairy Tale By Charles Perrault And The 1990s Movie... In everyday life, people are given roles to play; doctors are to heal the wounded, officers are to maintain order in society and teachers are to guide the youth onto the right path. In the past, each gender had to behave a certain way, the men were the strong worker of the home, whom provided the income for the family, while as the women were the gentle angels at home, whom took care of the children and housework. If the women were to defy these roles, they would be look down upon and be treated worse. However, time has change, these roles are no longer black and white; there is no longer a certain way a woman is supposed to act, modern women are depicted differently from the way they were in the past, this is due to the new norms in society that has been molded throughout time. This can be proven with the old fairy tale Cinderella by Charles Perrault and the 1990s movie Pretty Woman directed by Garry Marshall. To begin with, these two story and film both revolved around a woman who goes through many challenges and then found the love of their life, but the way they are depicted as are completely different from each other. Perrault s tale of Cinderella is set during the olden time. The title named protagonist of this story is portrayed as a pretty young woman whose daily life consisted of housework and obeying her stepmother whom was quite wicked and haughty (Perrault 16). Cinderella on the other hand was a woman of parallel goodness and sweetness (Perrault 16) who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Justice In The Wanderer And Beowulf History has shown that during the Anglo Saxon time period, the ideals and values of the people were very important to them. The Anglo Saxons were a people that inhabited modern day Britain. They migrated from the western part of the continent of Europe to Britain during the 5th century. The time period that Anglo Saxon people inhabited Britain became known as the Anglo Saxon period in English history. This period lasted between 500 1066 AD. During this time period, stories had not yet begun to be printed into books, so stories were spread by word of mouth, and became known as epic poems. Later in history, a book was developed called The Exeter, which was a gathering of anonymous epic poems from the Anglo Saxon period, and within the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During that time period, a king was the most important person to someone and he was regarded almost as high as a god would be. Because of this high regard for a king, loyalty to that king and acting on his behalf was extremely important. This is exemplified in The Wanderer when the narrator states I might find one who in mead hall might accept my affection, or on me, friendless, might wish consolation, offer me joy (Lines 27 29). This quote shows that the narrator in The Wanderer is searching for a king to serve because he has lost his. It is also shown that he finds support and joy in having a king to look towards for guidance. Likewise, in Beowulf his purpose is to serve a king that is not his own as stated in lines 415 426, So every elder and experienced councilman among my people supported my resolve come here to you, King Hrothgar, because all knew of my awesome strength. They had seen me boltered in the blood of the enemies when I battled and bound five beasts, raided a troll next and in the night sea slaughtered sea brutes. I have suffered extremes and avenged the Geats Now I mean to be a match for Grendel, settle the outcome in single combat (Lines 415 426). This quotation exemplifies Beowulf s need to help the king, Hrothgar, defeat Grendel, because loyalty and seeking justice on behalf of the king was his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
