compulsion or reliance, particularly among the youngsters. Computers are advantageous gadgets
that a considerable lot of us utilize every day. Computers plays vital role of our lives, permitting us

Carnival Cruise Lines Case Study
Another corporation that turned into a learning organization is Carnival Cruise Lines, after the
Costa Concordia accident. There are several mistakes that occurred in succession to cause the
events to unfold as they did. The captain s first decision was to get close to the shore of Giglio as
a salute to the island, something that he had successfully accomplished several times. This
would have been another successful salute, but the Costa Concordia was moving too fast for
getting so close to shore. While the captain had consulted radar and maps, he seems to have been
navigating based on what he could actually observe by looking, which was his second mistake.
His third error was something that many people do: he was talking on the phone while driving.
The captain s next mistake came out of confusion, perhaps due to the bottle of wine he consumed
with dinner. He began his turn away from the shore by calculating the distance from a set of rocks
that lay about 900 yards off the harbor. He did not see another rock that was even closer. It was not
until they had turned that he saw the huge rock below them. He ordered another turn, this time
away from the rock. The bowand midsection cleared the rock, but the stern hit the rocks. The
problem was that I went to starboard trying to avoid it, and that was the mistake, because I should
not have gone starboard, Schettino told prosecutors. I made an imprudent decision. Nothing would
have happened if I had not set the

Tractor Poem Analysis
The poem Tractor is written by Ted Hughes is literally about a tractor. The season is winter and
the man is trying to start the tractor but is unable to do so because of the weather. Eventually, the
man is able to start the tractor. However, while reading it further, this poem seems to be telling us
that with determination, man can overcome many problems no matter how tough the problem is,
using nature as a form of trouble to humans. Moreover, it also tells us that the journey to solving
the problem is difficult. This poem is in nine stanzas, where the first four stanzas describe the
process of starting up the tractor while the last five stanzas, describe how the tractor finally starts
up and rejoices. The poet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hence, we can see that the poet has created negative impressions of anger and disappointment
through the use of the first person narrative point of view, while the persona is still determined to
start it up.
Next, I would be talking about the use of imagery to create impressions of success. Firstly, the poet
uses the simile like a demon that demonstrates a more than usually complete materialization . This
simile compares the characteristic of materialization to the starting of the tractor, where the phrase
more than usually complete emphasizes that the effort taken to start the tractor was immense and
tremendously difficult such that the ignition of the tractor s engine is more than usually complete ,
displaying the impressions of success. Furthermore, the poet uses the personification levers awake
imprisoned deadweight , where the word awake is used to cause someone to get up from sleep.
This word tells us that the tractor is awaken after a deep sleep, and that shows us that the persona is
successful in awaking the tractor. Additionally, the word imprisoned suggests that that the tractor
was locked away, but is now freed from imprisonment, suggesting triumph and victory in starting
the tractor. Hence, we can see that poet uses imagery to create impressions of success and victory.
Also, I will be discussing the use of contrast in the poem. The

Crisis In Flint
In a contemporary light, the crisis in Flint is viewed as one of the most abhorrent violations of
the right to clean water. But in our initial reactions of shock and awe, we must ask one
fundamental question: Is this crisis the beginning of a national catastrophe? To answer this
question, we don t have to look far. Last week, the Ithaca City School District shut off their water
supply after the detection of high levels of lead. In Newark, New Jersey, 17,000 children are
now being tested for lead poisoning. In Long Island, New York, dilapidated cesspools leaking
nitrogen have led to a mass die off of flora and fauna within the Long Island Sound. These
incidents represent a fraction of the growing disaster that is our nation s water infrastructure.
Experts on urban water infrastructure have characterized water mains as ticking time bombs. Their
characterizations are justified for the most part many aging water mains have pipes made from
wooden planks wrapped in metal coil. From 2004 to 2009, 316 contaminants were detected in
water supplied to the public.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of the 43 million people who use private water wells in the U.S., it is estimated that 20% of them
are drinking from water sources with contaminants capable of harming human health. What is the
end result? An insidious water system, only growing in its abilities to trigger a catastrophe. Flint
provides us with a glimpse of what may be the new normal: thousands of children poisoned from
lead contaminated water, hundreds of thousands of citizens dependent on expensive bottled water,
and a government that has refused to be accountable every step of the

Satellite Imagery Based Analysis Of Archaeological Looting
Many horrible and despicable acts have been committed during wartime. However, some of the
worst acts committed are not readily known, such as the destruction and looting of historical areas
and heritage sites. Published in Near Eastern Archaeology, an article named Satellite Imagery Based
Analysis of Archaeological Lootingin Syriatackles this issue. In it Jesse Casana, the author,
explains how his team is using satellite imagery (along with ground reports) to track the
widespread looting across Syria. Casana is currently an Associate Professor at Dartmouth
College, in the Department of Anthropology. He is also directing a survey project in the Diyala
River Valley in Iraq. His previous engagement was as director of an excavation at Tell Qarqur in
Syria. His specialization is in the development and implementation of geospatial technology and its
use in archaeology. The combination of his boots on the ground experience in Syria, along with his
specialization makes him a perfect candidate to lead the analysis on these looting sites. There are
many reasons that I chose to review this article, the foremost being that it simply sounded
fascinating. In addition to that, I wanted to gather more information as to where, why, and to what
extent, looting was occurring. /!/
Since the start of the Syrian War in 2011, archaeologists have run into roadblocks with tracking
specific damages and scope of the damage done to historical sites and artifacts. This destruction

Essay on Kenneth Branagh s Adaptation of Frankenstein for...
Kenneth Branagh s Adaptation of Frankenstein for the Cinema
The story of Frankenstein has been set in the Georgian period. The story line can be cut briefly to
a crazed scientist (Victor Frankenstein) thinking he can play God . He tries to bring a creation to
life and once succeeding he realises the terrible mistake he has made and sets about trying to correct
it by murdering it. The Monster sets out for revenge killing family members one by one, ending
with them both dying in ice covered mountains. Kenneth Branagh has re told this story from Mary
Shelley s novel, Frankenstein. Branagh has been very careful when creating this movie, and
because of it, the movie has said to be a movie that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a form of expressionism, of how Branagh has created this movie from the adaptation of a
novel and managed to make it very powerful emotionally to the viewer.
The class structure of the film plays a big part in the story line, from Victor being at the top of
the upper class scale then coming down to the middle class such as the Nanny working for
Victor s family and then ending right down towards the lower class, the poverty of the working
people in the town. Throughout the story Victor and the Monster are both shown to be
outsiders. Victor began to get ideas in his head about being able to create a new life, starting to
hide himself in his lab for weeks on end studying and experimenting. He begins to lose touch
with the outside world and becomes extremely isolated. I think the Monster becomes alienated
from the moment it is created. It breaks out of the lab, which is ironic as Victor tries to lock
himself in the lab, and roams the disease ridden streets. He is exposed in the town and the
townspeople immediately try to rid him from the town by chasing him and using physical violence
towards the Monster. The Monster fleas the town, actually wanting to exclude himself from the
outside world because of the way he looks and

The Challenges Of The Italian Unification Of Italy
The Italian Unification is a time period during which Italy becomes unified as one country. While
trying to unify the country there were obstacles faced and conquered by Mazzini, Cavour, and
Garibaldi as they continued to unify Italy. They pushed Nationalism on the people. The problems
that were faced during the time of the unification were the Austrian occupation of Lombardy and
Venice. Also, the land still belonged to the Pope and not the government which meant that it did not
really belong to everyone and didn t symbolize unification. The last problem is there is an existence
of many independent states which means there were states ruling themselves. One of the major
people involved in the unification of Italyis Giuseppe Mazzini.... Show more content on

He helped unite Italy into one country and was considered a revolutionary hero. Throughout his
time as a revolutionary hero he faces some challenges, for instance, when he was supposed to
take over a war ship and instead he ended up being caught by the police. He was supposed to be
sentenced to death but he managed to escape and flee to South America for twelve years.
Garibaldi decided to move to North America and in the same year went back to Italy. In Italy, they
started calling him Risorgimento which meant revival. He was called this because he came back to
help change Italy and make it one country. In Italy, he partners with the king of Sardinia, Victor
Emmanuel II and politically left Mazzani. In order to unite Italy, they forced the Austrians into the
Alps. France took the last territory, called the Papal states. With that Garibaldi was able to push the
unification to finally happen. The Italian Unification brought a rise to Nationalism. Nationalism is
when a nation is joined together in ways of government, leaders, or religion. Nationalism is Italy
gives freedom of press and power to the government or one ruler. This is exactly what had been
done in the Italian Unification. They united under one rule and became a singular country. They
also received freedom of the press and a new Parliament during the time of Camillo di Cavour.
Mazzini, Cavour, and Garibaldi all used their ideas to help with the unification witch

Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower is a puddle iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Marsin Paris. Built in
1889, it has become both a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable
structures in the world. The tower is the tallest building in Paris and the most visited paid
monument in the world; millions of people ascend it every year. Named after its designer, engineer
Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built as the entrance arch to the 1889 World s Fair.
The tower stands 324 metres tall, about the same height as an 81 storey building. During its
construction, the Eiffel Towersurpassed theWashington Monument to assume the title of the tallest

The tower was much criticized by the public when it was built, with many calling it an eyesore.
Newspapers of the day were filled with angry letters from the arts community of Paris. The pig
iron structure of the Eiffel Tower weighs 7,300 tones, while the entire structure, including non
metal components, is approximately 10,000 tones. As a demonstration of the economy of design,
if the 7,300 tones of the metal structure were melted down it would fill the 125 metre square base
to a depth of only 6 cm, assuming the density of the metal to be 7.8 tones per cubic meter.
Depending on the ambient temperature, the top of the tower may shift away from the sun by up to
18 cm because of thermal expansion of the metal on the side facing the sun.
Maintenance of the tower includes applying 50 to 60 tones of paint every seven years to protect
it from rust. The height of the Eiffel Tower varies by 15 cm due to temperature. In order to
maintain a uniform appearance to an observer on the ground, three separate colors of paint are
used on the tower, with the darkest on the bottom and the lightest at the top. On occasion the color
of the paint is changed; the tower is currently painted a shade of bronze. On the first floor there are
interactive consoles hosting a poll for the color to use for a future session of painting. The only non
structural elements are the four decorative grillwork arches, added in Stephen Sauvestre s sketches,

Critical Appreciation Of Dover Beach
Eternal Note of Elegy A sensitive mind can often feel the essence of The Times more deeply
than its peers. Matthew Arnold is an obvious example. When British empire was beguiled by the
prosperity of the surface of Victoria Time, as a poet and scholar, he wrote in his top ranking
poem Dover beach sang desperate elegy for the crisis in the whole western civilization. In nature,
Dover beach is a masterpiece recalling with emotion. It starts with a peaceful picture, and ends
with a feeling of reasoning, using a sense of the word. But it is different from traditional feeling
poetry, but it uses some dramatic treatment techniques, in the way of the poet s monologue. The
dramatic scene in the poem is the night of the moon, in a house on Dover s seashore, where people
sail across the English Channel to French ports. The poem started when the tidewas full, and the sea
was calm, and everything seemed so quiet under the moonlight. Such good night is a perfect time
for the lovers to date. So, the poet could not help but telling his lover, Come to the window, how
sweet the evening breeze is! But then came the waves at low tide from the gravel. It gently and
repeatedly chanted the beat, recalled the poet endless thoughts, turning the scenery into lyrical
poetry, giving the expression with the development of the poet s thoughts. The poet begins by
connecting the changes of the tides to the fate of the people, because the tides, though rising and
falling, are always the symbol of

My Indian Culture
I am an Indian who was born and raised in America. This means that I have been affected by both
American and Indian cultures. One of the biggest lesson imparted on me from Indian culture
was about language. In Indian culture, a person shows respect to everyone. We call adults not
related to us uncle and auntie as a sign of respect towards our elders. We even call kids older
than us Chetan and Chachi in the part of India that my family comes from since they are
technically our elders as well. Since the use of expletives would be considered disrespectful, it was
forbidden in my family. In fact, when I was a kid, the word stupid was considered taboo. To the
young me, saying stupid would be the same as saying f***. I remember one time when I was really
young, I was really mad. It was so insignificant that I don t even remember what I got so angry
over. So I said the word stupid while my dad. It was one of the less wise decisions I made my life.
Something you should know about my dad is that he very strict and takes showing respect to
everyone very seriously. So when I said stupid , he got really mad. He punished me by taking away
my privileges like watching TV which was already limited because my dad believed that I
should only be studying on school days. I was so sad when he limited my privileges that I even
cried. From then on, I learned to control my language for fear of losing those privileges. Even if
those privileges were pretty trivial, back then, those were

The Adventure Of The Speckled Band
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was the author of the story The Adventure of the Speckled Band . In The
Adventure of the Speckled Band the main characters are Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, Helen

The exposition is when Helen thoroughly explained her case to Sherlock Holmesand Dr. Watson.
The main conflict is Helen Stoner fears for her life and has suspicions about her sister s death on
the eve of her marriage. After Helen enlightened the two detectives on her predicament, Helen
was informed that her case was extremely dire and she should be aware of the dangers of being in
the house. The first rising action is when Sherlock Holmes tells Helen Stoner how important it is
that Dr. Watson and he go to investigate her residence that day. The following rising action is when
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are confronted by Dr. Roylott, who threatened Sherlock and told
him to stay away from the Roylott, Stoke Maron Manor. Helen became cautious and fearful after
becoming aware of the dangers of her situation. Sherlock became focused after the conference with
Helen Stoner. The characters understood that Dr. Roylott was insane and had the potential to have

The Right Pressure Cooker For Your Home
There are many important factors to consider when you are looking for the right pressure cooker
for your home. Whether you are a beginner to pressure cookers or have used them for years, there
are still many different functions and features to look for when you start your search.
Quality Materials Stainless Steel
It doesn t really matter how many new and improved features a pressure cooker and canner may
have if the unit itself isn t made of quality materials. Many well known cookware companies use
the best materials by default, but it is important to check this fact out yourself when you are
comparison shopping. A pressure cooker that is made of durable, high quality stainless steelis the
best type to look for. Check the bottom stamp or the label to see whether or not the product is 18
/10 Stainless Steel , which means it has a composition of 10% nickel and 18% chromium. A stainless
steel product has to have at least 10.5% chromium in order for it to label itself as stainless. More
chromium will add to the strength of the model, as well. Nickel helps to increase the protective
layers and also adds a shine to the appliance. Pressure cookers use heavy stainless steel in order to
keep the units intact under enormous amounts of heat. This is why anything less, like a pressure
cooker made from cheap aluminum materials, would not be a good idea to purchase.
Additionally, pressure cookers that are made from stainless steel will not stain, are much stronger
than aluminum and

Effects Of Advertising Cause Low Self-Esteem
Advertising is an over 100 billion dollar a year industry and affects all of us throughout our lives.
We are each exposed to over 2,000 ads a day, constituting perhaps the most powerful educational
force in society. The average American will spend one and one half years of his or her life
watching television commercials. The ads sell a great deal more than products. They sell images,
makeup, skin and hair care, diet pills, and cosmetic surgery as a means of normalcy.
In this paper, I will argue how the effects of advertisements on a person s identity can cause low
self esteem and lead to health issues. First, I will explain what a person s identity means. A person
s identity is who you are, the way you think about yourself, the way you are viewed by the world
and the characteristics that define you.
Media portrayals of women through advertising and characters who are then, airbrushed and
perfect, contribute to norms that reinforce this unattainable image of beauty. According to Maggie
Vlazny, a mental health professional, Self esteem is a core identity issue, essential to personal
validation and our ability to experience joy. Once achieved, it comes from the inside out. But it is
assaulted or stunted from the outside in. A woman with low self esteem does not feel good about
herself because she has absorbed negative messages about women from the culture and/or
relationships.
Based on the images seen in advertising, women often feel they should be thin and

Romeo And Juliet Tragedy Quotes
True Tragedy The parents sadly watch their children being carried into the family tomb. The
play, by William Shakespeare, displays the relationships of Romeo and Juliet. This drama takes
place in Verona, Italy, where the Capulets and Montagues are feuding. Poor relationships, deceit,
and poor advice leads to tragedy. The teenagers relationships with their families are soon tested.
Juliet, however, is resolute in her decision to die rather than enter into a false marriage: If all
else fail, myself have power to die (Shakespeare). This quote shows how young relationships are
more powerful than elders. Romeo and Juliet show how strong young relationships really are.
They ended many feuds and problems in their life because they don t have to worry about
anything. When you are young, you don t have bills to pay, a family to take care of, and most of
the time no job. Romeo and Juliet has nothing to worry about because they are young and free.
This means their life is easy and stress free, and elder relationships struggle sometimes because they
go in debt, care about themselves more than the other person, and they get tired of eachother. Friar

Greenpeace and Politics
Greenpeace is an organization which often collides with governments in countries all over the
world in its attempt to stop things like global warming, deforestation, overfishing and more.
Greenpeace tries to reach their goals by direct action and lobbying. This is the part where they often

My questions about this topic are:
What conflicts does Greenpeace have (or did they have) with the government and corporations in
the Netherlands and governments and corporations of other countries in the world?
How exactly does Greenpeace influence governments and corporations?

They did this in several ways, they for example placed warning signs under more than 64

spoke to councilors and they dumped nuclear waste in several places. By now, more than 75
cities said no to nuclear waste and the energy company Delta declared in January to have put the

Supply Side Economics Will Benefit the Economy Essay...
Supply Side economics and policies would best benefit the economy in the case of a recession next
year.
Supply side policies are made of several important points to regulate the economy. Supply side
policies consist of stimulating the economy by production, cutting taxes, and limiting government
regulations to increase incentives for businesses and individuals. Businesses then would invest
more and expand to create jobs for people who would save and spend more money. Thus, increased
investment and productivity would lead to increased output in the economy. With this increased
output the economy grows and unemployment goes down. Yet, this would not be the only policy to
bring the economy out of a recession.
A monetary policy must be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Along with moral suasion, persuasion to get consumers to buy, and open market operations, the
buying and selling of government securities in financial markets, the easy money policy can only
help supply side economics in it s route to ending a recession and gaining economic stability. All of
these policies combined, supply side, easy money policy, open market operation, and moral
persuasion, can all have an impact on important issues. Some of these issues are employment,
international trade, and inflation.
Employment may be greatly effected by a huge surge in supply that would cause businesses to
hire more workers to meet the need of this great surge in supply and production. This surge in
new employment would then put money in the pockets of consumers to buy products and create
a demand. International trade can be greatly affected by supply side policies. Businesses are
more likely to export their goods if the economy is good and they have the resources to do so.
Also businesses may import resources to produce their goods or services.
This in the long run could benefit other countries tremendously. It is even possible to cause the
same effects of the supply side policies in the US to occur in the other countries, like an increase in
employment. Unfortunately, there are limitations on supply side policies. In the case of the Laffer
Curve for the years 1981 through 1989, total tax collections when adjusted for inflation, actually
declined after 1981 tax

Manichaean Dualism In The Hobbit
J.R.R Tolkien s writing consists of a variety of different mythological influences ranging from
Greco Roman, Norse, and Scandinavian. Thought these sources do shape the narrative of Tolkien s
writing and of Middle Earth as a whole, most prominent inspirations of his mythos is derived from
Christian theology in the Bible. Traces of biblical influence can be found throughout The Hobbit,
The Lord of the Ringstrilogy and The Silmarillion, particularly in each of these texts conception of
good and evil. Some have argued that the morality presented in his works are akin to Manichaean
dualism. In this essay, I shall argue that though Tolkien s position on the dichotomies of good and

Kingdom of Madagascar was ruled as constitutional democracy following their independence until
2009 when their president Marc Ravalomanana was forced to resign. The resignation of the
kingdoms president was a result of pressure from the military and started the downfall of
economic stability for the country. The Portuguese first came to the island of Madagascar in the
1500 s and later became a French colony in 1869. The island did not gain independence until 1960

Sociology Of Education As A Social Institution
Sociology of education
The sociology of education is a diverse and vibrant subfield that features theory and research
focused on how education as a social institution is affected by and affects other social institutions
and the social structure overall, and how various social forces shape the policies, practices, and
outcomes of schooling (www.thoughtco.com). Sociology of education is the systematic study of
educational system within the broader social context. At the heart of sociology is a special point
of view called the sociological perspective of education. While education is typically viewed in

What is the purpose of schooling?
7.Does education really change the society?
Educational sociology
Educational sociology determines the initial tendency of educators to view education from a social
point of view. It included a vast array of contents taught for the purpose of teacher training and
others interested in education. Educational sociology is by definition a discipline which considers
education within the purview of needs and values of society, it starts with the premise that
education is a social fact, a process and an institution, having a social function and being determined
socially. These kind of tendencies could be found in earlier educationists like Plato, the father of the
philosophy of education, who had a deep insight into the social function of education, and most of
the great educationists, especially Comenius, Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Fichte and Dewey explored the
relations between education and society.
However, since Herbart established pedagogy as a systematic theory, the main trend of educational
theory for a long time has been individualistic, in that it took the completion of an individual being
as the aim of education, with teaching seen as a deliberate and planned process of formal
instruction. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, in opposition to this individualistic theory, a
pedagogy emerged which held that the nature of education should be considered from a

Wine Industry
Executive Summary The United States wine industry is a 12 billion dollar industry and is
composed of 7,000 wineries and around 1,800 different companies. The three major companies
within the industry are Constellation brands, E J Gallo, and The Wine Group Inc. The industry has
made its way through the economic crisis at a better rate than some of the other U.S industries
however in order for them to continue to see any type of growth it is important that they
acknowledge their issues and find ways in which they can rectify them. The majority of the issues
among the industry are problems that cannot be directly controlled by individual winecompanies.
Therefore it is imperative that wineries find away to use these issues to their... Show more content

Not only does the U.S. produce wine to be sold in the U.S. but last year they exported around 403
million liters of wine, the majority was exported to Canada and the United Kingdom.
The price of grapes depends based on how the grapes were treated prior to being sold. This has
an effect on how much it cost to produce the wine, but it also affects how much the wine will
cost to the consumer. There is a price different between fresh grapes and grapes that have been
processed. In 2009 the average price for one ton of grapes was around $505. When examining the
cost of producing wine there are many factors in which you have to look at. Factors many include
but are not limited to, the grapes, the process of fermentation, the storage, the labor and time, the
bottling/packaging, and of course the shipping of the products to the customers. The total cost of
wine in California in 2009 was around 1.7 billion dollars, which included the production of 3.4
million tons of wine grapes.
The pricing for the products themselves are harder to approximate. There are many factors that go
into deciding the price for a certain type of wine, with a certain name, from a certain company,
containing a certain type of grape, that was processed a certain way. Many wine companies
throughout the US have a high end wine and a low end wine. This allows the company to enter the
market at all angels. Especially with the down turn of the economy, many companies have had to

Doing Gender
In this essay I discuss that doing gender means creating differences between girls and boys and
women and men.... (West Zimmerman 2002:13) I am concentrating on the female perspective,
how societyputs forth expectations of what is natural or biological even though, in some cases, it
can be quite demeaning and degrading. I am using some examples from the local media and also
a few childhoodexperiences that have helped me to now strongly suspect that the quote from
Simone Beauvoir (1972) One is not born a woman, but rather becomes one most likely has quite a
bit of truth to it. There is continuing controversy about the differences between girls and boys, men

Chin A Democratic System
China is considered to be a democratic system however it has always heavily been ran by
Communist parties. This used to be successful, China was considered to be the largest and most
advanced economy all the way up to the 19th century. Their economy began to slow, then stagnate,
and then eventually begin to decline after the beginning of the 19th century. They had a small up
rise in the 1930 s however continued to decline thereafter. Chinese government attempted to run
China through a planned economy system however this method did not work efficiently at all and
left the Chinese economy stagnated. In 1949, Mao Zedong, the Chinese Communist Party, also
known as chairman Mao believed in Marxist Leninest theories, unique military strategies and
different political policies. Mao Zedong attempted a Great Leap forward in which he attempted to
rapidly transform China s economy from an agrarian economy to an industrial one. This change did
not pan out, leading to a massive famine killing nearly 20 million and his government position
weakening. The Cultural Revolutionwas initiated in 1966 by Mao Zedong as a way to attack
current party leadership and argued for the reemergence of capitalist traits as well as reinstate his
power. Mao Zedong attempted to move China s party system away from the current political party
system due to the fact that he believed it was steering China in the wrong direction. His revolution

Whenever it may be an underlying truth or an invisible force, people can live without ever

Memory Is The Diary That We All Carry About With Us
Oscar Wilde said that Memory... is the diary that we all carry about with us. Every page of our
diary filled with a series of memories, but we wouldn t make a perfectly diary. Sometimes we lost
pictures in the diary, sometimes we miss spell words; just like memories will become vague and
pass out of mind. The process of memoryincludes Encoding, Storage, and Retrieval; those three
parts correlate and restrict each other. Memory storage is a step encompasses how information is
retained over time (Laura, 2013). As two of the systems involved in memory storage short term
memory (STM) and the long term memory (LTM) and play an important role when people

The paper will discuss both STM and LTM based on the textbook, then compare and contrast the
information on the textbook, to discuss memory psychologically. There are several resources

relevant to the information process in memory. The resources focus on the reason of memory

discovered in psychology database and intimately relate to the topic.

The Republic, By Plato
In Plato s book, The Republic , there are many examples of rhetoric. In regards to the controversial
topic of women and eugenics in which Plato is almost forced into mentioning because of
Adeimantus and Glaucon, he uses various rhetorical statements to portray his view on the matter.
His readers believe women should be equal, so Platoattempts to persuade his readers into thinking
he believes the same. For example, in the passage on women and family Plato states, we shall
assign these to each accordingly; but if the only difference apparent between them is that the female
bears and the malebegets, we shall not admit that this is the difference relevant for our purpose,
but shall still maintain that our male and female Guardians ought to follow the same
occupations (164). He uses the women are equal and can do the same things as men strategy in
order to make Athenian men understand what he is trying to say while still stroking their egos
by using rhetoric. Men are in general are hard to persuade when it comes to power, so as a result
Plato gives a sense of gender equality while at the same time still giving men the upper hand.
Now let us take a look into the background of the story. Plato gives his ideals on a perfect society
and everything it should include. He basically implies that justice is rightness, and rightness is
whatever he feels it should be. He breaks society down into guardians, wage earners, and
auxiliaries. Wage earners are people such as surgeons or

Islam And Western Imperialism In Islam
Although the Islamic world has faced many challenges throughout history, Islam s encounter with
Western imperialism during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has had the greatest impact on
contemporary Islam. These encounters with Western powers influenced and shaped the Muslim
world by introducing Islamto modernity. The Islamic world s varied reaction to these challenges of
modernity affects a wide range of issues in Islam today. To understand how the Muslim world
reacted to Western influence, we must understand what they were reacting to. With the fall of the
Ottoman Empire, European political ideas permeated the Middle East. Muslims were forced to

Modernists claimed these institutions were not foreign to Islam and could coexist within an Islamic
state. Rashid al Rida argued Islam was democratic and representative because Islamic leadership is
determined through consensus of the community. According to Rida, an Islamic state requires
Islamic legal systems, where the uluma are representatives of the people. Other Islamic modernists
such as Muhammad Abduh and Muhammad Iqbal also attempted to balance Western ideologies
with the Islamic faith. According to Abduh, reason and science were complementary to Islam.
Iqbal also believed some Western ideas were compatible with Islam. Iqbal applied reasoning to
help understand Islamic female inheritance laws. One interpretation of these laws is that a
woman is worth half a man. Iqbal argued the share of female inheritance is not based on a
woman s value, but rather on social context specific to a certain period. He claimed these laws
applied to a time when women had less financial responsibility than men. This type of logic and
reasoning still exists in contemporary Pakistani law. Both Abduh and Iqbal believed certain aspects
of Western influence could be applied to Islamic society, as long as those ideas did not contradict
Islam. Other movements within Islam have directly challenged the Islamic modernists ideas on
Western influence. Unlike Islamic

Colonialism, the policy and practice of a power in extending control over weaker peoples or areas,
was very prevalent in nineteenth century and promoted the connection of different parts of the
world. Likewise, globalization also connects and integrates different parts of the world, but it is
somehow differentiated from colonialism. The essay mainly talks about some differences and
similarities between 19th centurycolonialism and 21st century globalization by examining war and
conquest versus peace, violent revolutions versus trade and how both demonstrate trends of
interconnection.

Both colonialism and globalization improve the interconnection and development of countries in
spite of the inequality caused by them. Because of the British colonists in Africa, the incomes of
most African countries increased steadily during this period, from the year of 1885 (Robinson, J.
and Heldring, L. 2013). There was certain statistics showing the development of countries that were
colonized, but experts pointed out that harm triggered by colonialism should never be ignored.
Besides, the colonialism in 19th century promotes the interconnection between colonists and
colonies because colonies were ruled by colonists, so they had the same laws, regulations, culture,
and economic system. In East Africa, the British protectorate had influenced effectively. The
railway, hospitals, schools, and telegraph appeared in East Africa, and new food like maize and
sweet potatoes made Africans diet more nourishing (Rashid, N. 2014). The most significant
development of globalization is technology. Advanced technologies provide us more open source
materials, more efficient way of health care, more accessible education materials, and a free area to
communicate with people in different countries. The Internet Revolution and Web 2.0 have
improved the social networking and communication (Hrynyshyn, D. 2002). Because of the

programs implemented are designed to prepare students for productive futures while meeting the
commonwealth s need for well trained and industry certified technical workers (VDOE CTE). Much
like other states CTE programs, Virginia actively partners with businesses to design and provide
high quality, dynamic programs capable of meeting current, emerging and projected labor market

repositories containing integrated data form several dissimilar sources. It contains information
which can be utilized in creating investigative reports for the various users within an organization.
Examples of reports that can be retrieved from these repositories include annual and periodic

operational systems and hence can be utilized in making accurate reports regarding the operations.
Before the data can be used for reporting purposes it could pass through operational data stores.

Family System Theory And Early Childhood Practice
Edward Teyber once said, family system theory offers therapists an invaluable way of understanding
their clients strengths and problems clarifying the familial rules, roles, myths, communication
patterns, and boundary issues that defined their clients development. Also, as said in the article
Understanding Families Applying FamilySystem Theory to Early Childhood Practice that a family
system theory has a primary concept in which is that the family includes interconnected members,
and each member influences the other in predictable and occurring ways. (pg. 5).
First, based on the article read boundaries relate to limits, togetherness, and separateness, what or
who is in or out of the family (pg. 5, Walsh Giblin 1988). However, I thought that having
boundaries is important in a family because through boundaries we know when we can step into
certain areas or when can t we know. My experience in my family system theory as having
boundaries was that was that we each had an individual room, individual spaces, and trust within
our own decision. I also was able to give my own opinion but I needed to know which was the right
timing and to never step over the adult conversation.
In a family there is usually a peacemaker, a clown, a rescuer, and a victim, although there can be
many other roles as well , (pg. 7) this was said in the article that I read. I thought that role was one
of the most important on a family system theory due to that the roles in a family are

Feminism In Young Goodman Brown
The difference in attitude and treatment towards men and women from society is shown in Young
Goodman Brown ,in this case, I am going to analyze the anti feminist side. There are multiple
points in this short story that aid my point. The author, Nathaniel Hawthorne may have written this
based on his time when differences towards genders occurred. Women are portrayed as powerless
but rather innocent victims while men are seen as the more powerful individuals, making all the
decisions for them and their families. If people do not follow the roles their genderassociate with,
the conflicts between them and society may uprise with it. Faith, the newlywed wife of Goodman
Brown, is one of the main women who seems to be following a stereotypical role of a womanin her
time, or is she?As Young Goodman Brownopens up, Faith is seen as a little girl rather than a
newlywed woman. In the second paragraph, it states, A lone woman is troubled with such dreams
and such thoughts that she s afeard of herself sometimes. and in the sixth paragraph, ...he looked
back and saw the head of Faith still peeping after him with a melancholy air, in spite of her pink
ribbons. These quotes portray Faith as an irresponsible woman who is afraid to be alone ,without
her husband, and is not capable of taking care of herself. Speaking about Faith s pink ribbons, they
symbolize tainted innocence, which is contradicting to a woman s pure appearance. Faith s tainted
innocence is proven later in the

Its amazing to think that our recent ancestors saw nothing wrong with burning witches and hanging

which one could be sure that a machine thinks is to be the machine and to feel oneself thinking
(page 178). I agree with Jefferson because ultimately, we can explain why we believe it thinks but
we truly don t know if it is. Searle disagrees with Alan Turing, he believes that no program that is
purely symbolic can produce thoughts. That only biological beings can be conscious and that the
Turing Test doesn t prove that it is conscious (class notes). Searle gives an alternative concept to the
Turing Test by replacing the computer with a human and the program but making the symbols in

Kateri Tekakwitha Biography
Kateri Tekakwitha was born in 1656 to an Algonquian mother and Mohawk father. Tekakwitha
was the name given by her Mohawk people. It translates to she who bumps into things. She was
born in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon west of present day Auriesville, New York. She was
the daughter of Kenneronkwa, a Mohawk chief, and Tagaskouita, an Algonquin woman. Mohawk
warriors recaptured Tagaskouita after she was baptized Roman Catholic and educated by French
missionaries east of Montreal, eventually marrying Kenneronkwa. Tekakwitha was the first of their
two children. France held almost as much territory as the British in North America. New France
was organized as small communities holding close links to Indian villages. The major focus of the
economy was trade. Merchants of fur learned of connections with Native women as a very valuable

Tekakwitha was said to have lain on a thorny sleeping mat while praying for the conversion and
forgiveness of her kinsmen. Piercing the body to draw blood was a traditional practice of the
Mohawk and other Iroquois nations. She lived at Kahnawake the remaining two years of her life.
She learned more about Christianity under her mentor Anastasia, who taught her about the practice
of repenting for sins. When the women learned of nuns, they wanted to form their own convent
and created an informal association of devout women. In 1680, Tekakwitha s health began to fail.
When she was on her deathbed, villagers gathered together. Catherine Tekakwitha died around 3
p.m. on Holy Wednesday, April 17, 1680, at the age of twenty three or twenty four. After her
death, people noticed a physical change in her appearance. Her smallpox scars were said to
disappear. After her death in 1680, she became synonymous with miracles and

Cognitive Enhancement Ethics
Cognitive enhancement is a rapidly evolving medical advancement which has the potential to
drastically change society as we know it. Cognitive enhancement technologies, such as
pharmaceutical and genetic cognitive enhancement methods, raise a wide variety of ethical
concerns despite their potential to greatly benefit society. This paper will focus on cognitive
enhancement drugs, also known as nootropics, such as Adderall, Ritalin, and Modafinil. In this
paper, I will argue that we have a moral obligation to utilize pharmaceutical cognitive enhancement
methods in order to benefit society as a whole. I will also consider a potential objection to the
presented argument which questions the benefits of cognitive enhancement drugs if their successful

Thanks to organizations such as the Food and Drug Administration, we can be assured that the
widespread implementation of nootropics would be both efficacious and beneficial. The
widespread implementation of the utilization of these drugs by healthy and unhealthy individuals
will result in a general increase of the cognition of the general public. This general increase in the
cognition of the population will result in the ability of these individuals to achieve things which
could not have been conceived prior to the implementation of these medical advances (Buchanan,
2011, p. 130). The following excerpt from Science and Engineering Ethics, a scientific journal
which explores the ethics of multiple scientific fields of study, describes the effects of cognitive
enhancement drugs on healthy individuals, Stimulants enhance memory by increasing neuronal
activation or by releasing neuromodulators, facilitating the synaptic changes that underlie learning
(Bostrom Sandberg, 2002, p. 316). The net effects of these drugs help users concentrate and remain
focused for longer periods of time. This increase in ability to concentrate directly results in its users
being better able to comprehend, remember, and learn new information. These effects could result

Technology In Canada
According to the Globe and Mail, as of 2013, 23% of Canadian Companies offered employees
the option to telecommute. A Statistics Canada study stated that in 2000, 1,425,700 respondents
worked from home, where as in 2008 the number of people working from home was 1,748,600, a
small but notable upward trend. Though numbers are only increasing slowly, more and more
Canadians are working from home. The trend is particularly impacting university graduates, of
who more than 1 in 5 work from home. Factors that have contributed to this trend include an
increase in the type and availability of technology, the desire of today s workers to have a better
work life balance, and the desire of companies to attract employees. In today s work technology is
increasing at a rapid pace, and much of it is more accessible than before. An example that has been
changed by both of these factors is the internet. When first introduced to homes and businesses, use
of the internet required it to be connected to a phone line. In many homes this would have meant
that you could use one or the other, but not both at once. During this era access to the internet was
limited to those who could afford to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

technology, employees in many professions no longer have to be at the office to receive
instructions, or to submit their completed work in a timely manner. Companies can use email,

Introduction
When one speak of the word diversity, odds are the first thing that comes to mind is either race or
gender, when in fact it is a whole lot more that can be considered and not just race alone. It can be
diverse ideas, diverse training, diverse cultural, diverse academic abilities, and diverse skills.
Diversity Management is the practice of recognizing and supporting multiple lifestyles and
personal characteristics within a group of people. In today s workplace diversity is not a norm but
also an encouraged workplace makeup from employees, shareholders, government, and employers.

Righteousness In WW1
The first couple of chapters in this selection was very interesting in that we see how the ways of
the world slowly began to overcome the righteousness of the people. Although they did not teach
contrary to the direct word of God, they did claim to have another system of beliefs that so
happened to be different the standard system of beliefs. This so closely follows current day
problems; some religious groups were simply formed to go contrary to the normal system of
beliefs and sometimes become hostile to the traditional believers. Thinking about the descriptions
of the war doings draws a vivid picture; a terrible war was fought, brother against brother, simply
over a disagreement about who should rule. When violence enters a conflict, surely

Anabolic Steroids Have On The Body
Anabolic androgenic steroids are a synthetic version of testosterone which one injects into the body.
There are many different types of steroids however the most commonly abused are stimulants, HGH
(Human Growth Hormone), diuretics, and testosterone. Although the body naturally produces
testosterone many athletes, especially bodybuilders, take steroids to increase lean muscle mass,
strength, and performance. Anabolic androgenic steroids are a controversial topic within sports.
The main concern with steroids are the long term health effects that it has on the athletes.
One of the many questions that have been asked by medical specialist are if training and diet of the

Anabolic androgenic steroids play an important role in the pharmaceutical industry and have many
beneficial effects on sick patients. According to the Parssinen and Seppala the authors of the article
Steroid Use and Long Term Health Risks in Former Athletes they state that Anabolic steroids and
testosterone are effective and well tolerated pharmaceutical agents when administered for proper
medical indications such as androgen replacement therapy, osteoporosis, aplastic anemia, and
cancer. (Parssinen, Seppala, pg. 1). The issue is that the abuse of steroids have increased within
athletes and many doctors are concerned of the adverse effects that it will have.
Many studies have been conducted over the past few decades and have shown the harmful effects
that steroids can have on an athlete s body. In the article Steroids in Combat Sports: Adverse
effects on Health written by Malik and Trainor they list some of the damaging effects it can have
such as: stoppage of bone growth resulting in growth retardation which is irreversible, increase risk
of muscle injury, bone destruction, heart disease... (Malik, Trainor, and pg.1) the list goes on to
include diseases such as cancer, and even death.
Most people know that steroids have a harmful, and even deadly, effect on the body. However,
Gerard Thorne in his book Anabolic Primer discusses and challenges the beliefs that many people
have on steroid use. Thorne believes that there is a safer way to use the

The Moral Obligation Of Affluent Individuals
The question on whether affluent individuals have a moral obligation to assist the poor is a
widely controversial subject, and this was even apparent in our very own ethical reasoning class.
So the question still stands, is it our duty to assist the poor? The answer is much simpler than
people make it out to be. Yes.
While this answer is widely based of off my own opinion as well as those of Peter Singer, I am
prepared to defend my answer not only with the Singers evidence but also with my own thoughts
and motives. But I don t believe that only the rich should feel the moral obligation to assist the
poor, I believe everyone should do whatever we can to help one another. I do not believe that
people should be forced into helping one another by laws and government authorities, but instead
that it is the simply the right thing to do. First off I am going to explain the details of Singers
argument for the moral obligation of affluent individuals to assist the poor. Singer basis his
argument off utilitarian grounds, so generally promoting whatever promotes the most happiness for
the most people. Here are Singers three main premises. First, if we have the power to prevent
something bad from happening without having to sacrifice too much then morally we should do it.
Second, poverty is the number one source of human misery. And third, those who are well off have
a moral obligation to help reduce poverty, but they do not necessarily have to sacrifice everything
or anything of too

The Importance Of Artifice In Society
Although many people may like to think of America as a honest and moral nation, it is no secret
that artifice has cemented itself as an indispensable skill, exploited by many to achieve their own
ambitions. Artifice, characterized through the usage of cunning devices or expedients to deceive
others, is often utilized by politicians and organizations to help push their own agendas. As
illustrated by Chris Hedges in his social commentary, Empire of Illusion, artifice has emerged to
become so ubiquitous and essential throughout American society, whether in business or the
entertainment industry. Essential, in the essence that without it, people in any industry are more
likely to be disadvantaged in achieving their personal goals. In today s modern world, no area has
seen more abuse of artifice than in the field of media and politics. Its common knowledge that
newspapers skew reports to their own biases and politicians often tell half truths to cover up ulterior
motives. Unfortunately, these politicians and media giants hold extremely influential positions in
society, and their usage of artifice is extremely damaging to the integrity and accountability within
the United States. As a result, the press as well as the general populace must utilize free speech to
expose this behavior. Despite the complete immorality of the usage of artifice, such chicanery
remains essential for success in media and politics. Artifice generated through the media plays a
pivotal role in the spread

Essay on Acoustic Waves in Physics
Acoustic Waves in Physics
An acoustic wave can simply be described as a longitudinal wave. A longitudinal wave is a wave
that vibrates and moves in the direction of its propagation. This means the medium is either in the
same or opposite direction of the way the wave travels. Acoustic waves are a form of Mechanical
longitudinal waves; these waves are otherwise known as compression waves or compressional
waves. Compressional waves obviously produce compression, decompression, and rarefaction to
travel. In Physics, the acoustic wave has an equation to describe the evolution of acoustic pressure
and particle velocity as a function. The general equation is:

The molecules seem to move when something pushes them and forces the molecules to bump into
each other. This process makes the compression and rare factor that I have talked about before.
Acoustic waves are an isolation of pressure that travel in a wave pattern. Acoustic waves cause a
vibration that leads to your ear that allows us to hear. These acoustic waves are defined by three
different characteristics. These characteristics are amplitude, frequency and wave length. Amplitude
is the energy in a wave. The amplitude affects its volume or sound. The number of waves that pass
a point at each second, the higher the frequency, the higher the pitch compared to those who have
low frequencies. You can describe these waves as the waves that allow humans and other species
to hear. There is not different types of acoustic waves. The acoustic wave is a longitudinal
compressional wave. [8] There are no other kind of acoustic waves, sometimes they have different
equations but that is because some are higher and or stronger than others.
Acoustic waves in fact can be reflected. It is said that the waves can possibly exhibit different sorts
of phenomena. Diffraction, interference and reflection are all examples of phenomena the wave
can go through. This brings to topic an important difference between acoustic waves and sound
waves. Without acoustic waves it would be

motivate employees. Intrinsic to reflect the natural human propensity to learn and assimilate and
extrinsic to reflect external control or true self regulation.

Female Representations Between American Psycho And Misery

Female Representations Between American Psycho and Misery In the media, gender is
stereotypically represented by splitting both men and women into two categories. Within these
categories are specific traits that have led women to become represented as inferior to men.
Women are presented as sexual, emotional and dependant while men are portrayed as strong,
reliant and independent. This causes males in the media to be the hero who has the capabilities to
take on the active roles while women deal with the passive roles. The representation of both
genders significantly influence the way that the horror genre is portrayed in today s movies
(Santili, 2007). A prime example is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is how Bateman and his colleagues think about women and also how the media portrays the
importance of what women are: sex symbols. Women in American Psychoare depicted as nothing
more than sexual desires and personality or intelligence has little to no importance in the story. A
primary example is when Bateman has sex with two prostitutes named Christie and Sabrina.
Afterwards, he proceeds to torture both women where [he] impatiently leads them to the door,
both of them dressed and sobbing, bleeding but well paid (Ellis, 1991). This scene displays the
lack of intelligence or personality that both women have and goes on to demonstrates how Bateman
used them for his sexual and sadistic pleasures. However, in Stephen King s Misery , there is a lack
of sexualisation towards the female protagonist. Paul Sheldon, who is trapped within the home
of crazed Annie Wilkes is less than thrilled to be stuck inside a isolated house with a woman.
While most works of horror have younger female actresses, Annie Wilkes is a middle aged
women who plays a big part in the story (Foster, 2014). Misery certainly subverts the sexual appeal
that the media portrays in today s horror genre. Emotional characteristics are another representation
that women are shown to have in the media. Women are displayed as weak, inferior human beings
that are

  • 3. Carnival Cruise Lines Case Study Another corporation that turned into a learning organization is Carnival Cruise Lines, after the Costa Concordia accident. There are several mistakes that occurred in succession to cause the events to unfold as they did. The captain s first decision was to get close to the shore of Giglio as a salute to the island, something that he had successfully accomplished several times. This would have been another successful salute, but the Costa Concordia was moving too fast for getting so close to shore. While the captain had consulted radar and maps, he seems to have been navigating based on what he could actually observe by looking, which was his second mistake. His third error was something that many people do: he was talking on the phone while driving. The captain s next mistake came out of confusion, perhaps due to the bottle of wine he consumed with dinner. He began his turn away from the shore by calculating the distance from a set of rocks that lay about 900 yards off the harbor. He did not see another rock that was even closer. It was not until they had turned that he saw the huge rock below them. He ordered another turn, this time away from the rock. The bowand midsection cleared the rock, but the stern hit the rocks. The problem was that I went to starboard trying to avoid it, and that was the mistake, because I should not have gone starboard, Schettino told prosecutors. I made an imprudent decision. Nothing would have happened if I had not set the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. British Literature Tractor Poem Analysis The poem Tractor is written by Ted Hughes is literally about a tractor. The season is winter and the man is trying to start the tractor but is unable to do so because of the weather. Eventually, the man is able to start the tractor. However, while reading it further, this poem seems to be telling us that with determination, man can overcome many problems no matter how tough the problem is, using nature as a form of trouble to humans. Moreover, it also tells us that the journey to solving the problem is difficult. This poem is in nine stanzas, where the first four stanzas describe the process of starting up the tractor while the last five stanzas, describe how the tractor finally starts up and rejoices. The poet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hence, we can see that the poet has created negative impressions of anger and disappointment through the use of the first person narrative point of view, while the persona is still determined to start it up. Next, I would be talking about the use of imagery to create impressions of success. Firstly, the poet uses the simile like a demon that demonstrates a more than usually complete materialization . This simile compares the characteristic of materialization to the starting of the tractor, where the phrase more than usually complete emphasizes that the effort taken to start the tractor was immense and tremendously difficult such that the ignition of the tractor s engine is more than usually complete , displaying the impressions of success. Furthermore, the poet uses the personification levers awake imprisoned deadweight , where the word awake is used to cause someone to get up from sleep. This word tells us that the tractor is awaken after a deep sleep, and that shows us that the persona is successful in awaking the tractor. Additionally, the word imprisoned suggests that that the tractor was locked away, but is now freed from imprisonment, suggesting triumph and victory in starting the tractor. Hence, we can see that poet uses imagery to create impressions of success and victory. Also, I will be discussing the use of contrast in the poem. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Crisis In Flint In a contemporary light, the crisis in Flint is viewed as one of the most abhorrent violations of the right to clean water. But in our initial reactions of shock and awe, we must ask one fundamental question: Is this crisis the beginning of a national catastrophe? To answer this question, we don t have to look far. Last week, the Ithaca City School District shut off their water supply after the detection of high levels of lead. In Newark, New Jersey, 17,000 children are now being tested for lead poisoning. In Long Island, New York, dilapidated cesspools leaking nitrogen have led to a mass die off of flora and fauna within the Long Island Sound. These incidents represent a fraction of the growing disaster that is our nation s water infrastructure. Experts on urban water infrastructure have characterized water mains as ticking time bombs. Their characterizations are justified for the most part many aging water mains have pipes made from wooden planks wrapped in metal coil. From 2004 to 2009, 316 contaminants were detected in water supplied to the public.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of the 43 million people who use private water wells in the U.S., it is estimated that 20% of them are drinking from water sources with contaminants capable of harming human health. What is the end result? An insidious water system, only growing in its abilities to trigger a catastrophe. Flint provides us with a glimpse of what may be the new normal: thousands of children poisoned from lead contaminated water, hundreds of thousands of citizens dependent on expensive bottled water, and a government that has refused to be accountable every step of the ... • 6. Satellite Imagery Based Analysis Of Archaeological Looting Many horrible and despicable acts have been committed during wartime. However, some of the worst acts committed are not readily known, such as the destruction and looting of historical areas and heritage sites. Published in Near Eastern Archaeology, an article named Satellite Imagery Based Analysis of Archaeological Lootingin Syriatackles this issue. In it Jesse Casana, the author, explains how his team is using satellite imagery (along with ground reports) to track the widespread looting across Syria. Casana is currently an Associate Professor at Dartmouth College, in the Department of Anthropology. He is also directing a survey project in the Diyala River Valley in Iraq. His previous engagement was as director of an excavation at Tell Qarqur in Syria. His specialization is in the development and implementation of geospatial technology and its use in archaeology. The combination of his boots on the ground experience in Syria, along with his specialization makes him a perfect candidate to lead the analysis on these looting sites. There are many reasons that I chose to review this article, the foremost being that it simply sounded fascinating. In addition to that, I wanted to gather more information as to where, why, and to what extent, looting was occurring. /!/ Since the start of the Syrian War in 2011, archaeologists have run into roadblocks with tracking specific damages and scope of the damage done to historical sites and artifacts. • 7. Essay on Kenneth Branagh s Adaptation of Frankenstein for... Kenneth Branagh s Adaptation of Frankenstein for the Cinema The story of Frankenstein has been set in the Georgian period. The story line can be cut briefly to a crazed scientist (Victor Frankenstein) thinking he can play God . He tries to bring a creation to life and once succeeding he realises the terrible mistake he has made and sets about trying to correct it by murdering it. The Monster sets out for revenge killing family members one by one, ending with them both dying in ice covered mountains. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a form of expressionism, of how Branagh has created this movie from the adaptation of a novel and managed to make it very powerful emotionally to the viewer. The class structure of the film plays a big part in the story line, from Victor being at the top of the upper class scale then coming down to the middle class such as the Nanny working for Victor s family and then ending right down towards the lower class, the poverty of the working people in the town. Throughout the story Victor and the Monster are both shown to be outsiders. Victor began to get ideas in his head about being able to create a new life, starting to hide himself in his lab for weeks on end studying and experimenting. He begins to lose touch with the outside world and becomes extremely isolated. I think the Monster becomes alienated from the moment it is created. It breaks out of the lab, which is ironic as Victor tries to lock himself in the lab, and roams the disease ridden streets. He is exposed in the town and the townspeople immediately try to rid him from the town by chasing him and using physical violence towards the Monster. The Monster fleas the town, actually wanting to exclude himself from the outside world because of the way he looks and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Challenges Of The Italian Unification Of Italy The Italian Unification is a time period during which Italy becomes unified as one country. While trying to unify the country there were obstacles faced and conquered by Mazzini, Cavour, and Garibaldi as they continued to unify Italy. They pushed Nationalism on the people. The problems that were faced during the time of the unification were the Austrian occupation of Lombardy and Venice. Also, the land still belonged to the Pope and not the government which meant that it did not really belong to everyone and didn t symbolize unification. The last problem is there is an existence of many independent states which means there were states ruling themselves. One of the major people involved in the unification of Italyis Giuseppe Mazzini.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He helped unite Italy into one country and was considered a revolutionary hero. Throughout his time as a revolutionary hero he faces some challenges, for instance, when he was supposed to take over a war ship and instead he ended up being caught by the police. He was supposed to be sentenced to death but he managed to escape and flee to South America for twelve years. Garibaldi decided to move to North America and in the same year went back to Italy. In Italy, they started calling him Risorgimento which meant revival. He was called this because he came back to help change Italy and make it one country. In Italy, he partners with the king of Sardinia, Victor Emmanuel II and politically left Mazzani. In order to unite Italy, they forced the Austrians into the Alps. France took the last territory, called the Papal states. With that Garibaldi was able to push the unification to finally happen. The Italian Unification brought a rise to Nationalism. Nationalism is when a nation is joined together in ways of government, leaders, or religion. Nationalism is Italy gives freedom of press and power to the government or one ruler. This is exactly what had been done in the Italian Unification. They united under one rule and became a singular country. They also received freedom of the press and a new Parliament during the time of Camillo di Cavour. Mazzini, Cavour, and Garibaldi all used their ideas to help with the unification witch ... • 9. Eiffel Tower The Eiffel Tower is a puddle iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Marsin Paris. Built in 1889, it has become both a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The tower is the tallest building in Paris and the most visited paid monument in the world; millions of people ascend it every year. Named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built as the entrance arch to the 1889 World s Fair. The tower stands 324 metres tall, about the same height as an 81 storey building. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The tower was much criticized by the public when it was built, with many calling it an eyesore. Newspapers of the day were filled with angry letters from the arts community of Paris. The pig iron structure of the Eiffel Tower weighs 7,300 tones, while the entire structure, including non metal components, is approximately 10,000 tones. As a demonstration of the economy of design, if the 7,300 tones of the metal structure were melted down it would fill the 125 metre square base to a depth of only 6 cm, assuming the density of the metal to be 7.8 tones per cubic meter. Depending on the ambient temperature, the top of the tower may shift away from the sun by up to 18 cm because of thermal expansion of the metal on the side facing the sun. Maintenance of the tower includes applying 50 to 60 tones of paint every seven years to protect it from rust. The height of the Eiffel Tower varies by 15 cm due to temperature. In order to maintain a uniform appearance to an observer on the ground, three separate colors of paint are used on the tower, with the darkest on the bottom and the lightest at the top. On occasion the color of the paint is changed; the tower is currently painted a shade of bronze. On the first floor there are interactive consoles hosting a poll for the color to use for a future session of painting. • 10. Critical Appreciation Of Dover Beach Eternal Note of Elegy A sensitive mind can often feel the essence of The Times more deeply than its peers. Matthew Arnold is an obvious example. When British empire was beguiled by the prosperity of the surface of Victoria Time, as a poet and scholar, he wrote in his top ranking poem Dover beach sang desperate elegy for the crisis in the whole western civilization. In nature, Dover beach is a masterpiece recalling with emotion. It starts with a peaceful picture, and ends with a feeling of reasoning, using a sense of the word. But it is different from traditional feeling poetry, but it uses some dramatic treatment techniques, in the way of the poet s monologue. The dramatic scene in the poem is the night of the moon, in a house on Dover s seashore, where people sail across the English Channel to French ports. The poem started when the tidewas full, and the sea was calm, and everything seemed so quiet under the moonlight. Such good night is a perfect time for the lovers to date. So, the poet could not help but telling his lover, Come to the window, how sweet the evening breeze is! But then came the waves at low tide from the gravel. It gently and repeatedly chanted the beat, recalled the poet endless thoughts, turning the scenery into lyrical poetry, giving the expression with the development of the poet s thoughts. • 11. My Indian Culture I am an Indian who was born and raised in America. This means that I have been affected by both American and Indian cultures. One of the biggest lesson imparted on me from Indian culture was about language. In Indian culture, a person shows respect to everyone. We call adults not related to us uncle and auntie as a sign of respect towards our elders. We even call kids older than us Chetan and Chachi in the part of India that my family comes from since they are technically our elders as well. Since the use of expletives would be considered disrespectful, it was forbidden in my family. In fact, when I was a kid, the word stupid was considered taboo. To the young me, saying stupid would be the same as saying f***. I remember one time when I was really young, I was really mad. It was so insignificant that I don t even remember what I got so angry over. So I said the word stupid while my dad. It was one of the less wise decisions I made my life. Something you should know about my dad is that he very strict and takes showing respect to everyone very seriously. So when I said stupid , he got really mad. He punished me by taking away my privileges like watching TV which was already limited because my dad believed that I should only be studying on school days. I was so sad when he limited my privileges that I even cried. From then on, I learned to control my language for fear of losing those privileges. • 13. The Right Pressure Cooker For Your Home There are many important factors to consider when you are looking for the right pressure cooker for your home. Whether you are a beginner to pressure cookers or have used them for years, there are still many different functions and features to look for when you start your search. Quality Materials Stainless Steel It doesn t really matter how many new and improved features a pressure cooker and canner may have if the unit itself isn t made of quality materials. Many well known cookware companies use the best materials by default, but it is important to check this fact out yourself when you are comparison shopping. A pressure cooker that is made of durable, high quality stainless steelis the best type to look for. Check the bottom stamp or the label to see whether or not the product is 18 /10 Stainless Steel , which means it has a composition of 10% nickel and 18% chromium. A stainless steel product has to have at least 10.5% chromium in order for it to label itself as stainless. More chromium will add to the strength of the model, as well. Nickel helps to increase the protective layers and also adds a shine to the appliance. Pressure cookers use heavy stainless steel in order to keep the units intact under enormous amounts of heat. This is why anything less, like a pressure cooker made from cheap aluminum materials, would not be a good idea to purchase. Additionally, pressure cookers that are made from stainless steel will not stain, are much stronger than aluminum and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Effects Of Advertising Cause Low Self-Esteem Advertising is an over 100 billion dollar a year industry and affects all of us throughout our lives. We are each exposed to over 2,000 ads a day, constituting perhaps the most powerful educational force in society. The average American will spend one and one half years of his or her life watching television commercials. The ads sell a great deal more than products. They sell images, makeup, skin and hair care, diet pills, and cosmetic surgery as a means of normalcy. In this paper, I will argue how the effects of advertisements on a person s identity can cause low self esteem and lead to health issues. First, I will explain what a person s identity means. A person s identity is who you are, the way you think about yourself, the way you are viewed by the world and the characteristics that define you. Media portrayals of women through advertising and characters who are then, airbrushed and perfect, contribute to norms that reinforce this unattainable image of beauty. According to Maggie Vlazny, a mental health professional, Self esteem is a core identity issue, essential to personal validation and our ability to experience joy. Once achieved, it comes from the inside out. But it is assaulted or stunted from the outside in. A woman with low self esteem does not feel good about herself because she has absorbed negative messages about women from the culture and/or relationships. Based on the images seen in advertising, women often feel they should be thin and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The play, by William Shakespeare, displays the relationships of Romeo and Juliet. This drama takes place in Verona, Italy, where the Capulets and Montagues are feuding. Poor relationships, deceit, and poor advice leads to tragedy. The teenagers relationships with their families are soon tested. Juliet, however, is resolute in her decision to die rather than enter into a false marriage: If all else fail, myself have power to die (Shakespeare). This quote shows how young relationships are more powerful than elders. Romeo and Juliet show how strong young relationships really are. They ended many feuds and problems in their life because they don t have to worry about anything. When you are young, you don t have bills to pay, a family to take care of, and most of the time no job. Romeo and Juliet has nothing to worry about because they are young and free. This means their life is easy and stress free, and elder relationships struggle sometimes because they go in debt, care about themselves more than the other person, and they get tired of eachother. • 18. Supply Side Economics Will Benefit the Economy Essay... Supply Side economics and policies would best benefit the economy in the case of a recession next year. Supply side policies are made of several important points to regulate the economy. Supply side policies consist of stimulating the economy by production, cutting taxes, and limiting government regulations to increase incentives for businesses and individuals. Businesses then would invest more and expand to create jobs for people who would save and spend more money. Thus, increased investment and productivity would lead to increased output in the economy. With this increased output the economy grows and unemployment goes down. Yet, this would not be the only policy to bring the economy out of a recession. A monetary policy must be ... Along with moral suasion, persuasion to get consumers to buy, and open market operations, the buying and selling of government securities in financial markets, the easy money policy can only help supply side economics in it s route to ending a recession and gaining economic stability. All of these policies combined, supply side, easy money policy, open market operation, and moral persuasion, can all have an impact on important issues. Some of these issues are employment, international trade, and inflation. Employment may be greatly effected by a huge surge in supply that would cause businesses to hire more workers to meet the need of this great surge in supply and production. This surge in new employment would then put money in the pockets of consumers to buy products and create a demand. International trade can be greatly affected by supply side policies. Businesses are more likely to export their goods if the economy is good and they have the resources to do so. Also businesses may import resources to produce their goods or services. This in the long run could benefit other countries tremendously. It is even possible to cause the same effects of the supply side policies in the US to occur in the other countries, like an increase in employment. Unfortunately, there are limitations on supply side policies. Educational sociology is by definition a discipline which considers education within the purview of needs and values of society, it starts with the premise that education is a social fact, a process and an institution, having a social function and being determined socially. These kind of tendencies could be found in earlier educationists like Plato, the father of the philosophy of education, who had a deep insight into the social function of education, and most of the great educationists, especially Comenius, Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Fichte and Dewey explored the relations between education and society. However, since Herbart established pedagogy as a systematic theory, the main trend of educational theory for a long time has been individualistic, in that it took the completion of an individual being as the aim of education, with teaching seen as a deliberate and planned process of formal instruction. • 37. Feminism In Young Goodman Brown The difference in attitude and treatment towards men and women from society is shown in Young Goodman Brown ,in this case, I am going to analyze the anti feminist side. There are multiple points in this short story that aid my point. The author, Nathaniel Hawthorne may have written this based on his time when differences towards genders occurred. Women are portrayed as powerless but rather innocent victims while men are seen as the more powerful individuals, making all the decisions for them and their families. If people do not follow the roles their genderassociate with, the conflicts between them and society may uprise with it. Faith, the newlywed wife of Goodman Brown, is one of the main women who seems to be following a stereotypical role of a womanin her time, or is she?As Young Goodman Brownopens up, Faith is seen as a little girl rather than a newlywed woman. In the second paragraph, it states, A lone woman is troubled with such dreams and such thoughts that she s afeard of herself sometimes. and in the sixth paragraph, ...he looked back and saw the head of Faith still peeping after him with a melancholy air, in spite of her pink ribbons. These quotes portray Faith as an irresponsible woman who is afraid to be alone ,without her husband, and is not capable of taking care of herself. Speaking about Faith s pink ribbons, they symbolize tainted innocence, which is contradicting to a woman s pure appearance. Faith s tainted innocence is proven later in the ... Shakespeare In The Bush By Laura Bohannan Analysis Its amazing to think that our recent ancestors saw nothing wrong with burning witches and hanging children for the crime of stealing a handkerchief while in today s Western society it is universally accepted that these punishments are no longer acceptable. While studying AS level sociology I was struck by the way in which individuals can affect these hugely influential changes on the society around them. This concept, along with my study of Nazi Germany and Communist Russia, led me to a fascination with the affects that propaganda can have on a society. Artificial intelligence isn t necessarily new but it has expanded greatly the past few years. I will first explain what artificial intelligence is and the Turing Test. Finally, I will discuss Turing and Searle s views about the Turing Test and who has the stronger argument. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, artificial intelligence (AI) is, The capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior (Webster). Alan Turing invented the Turing Test, as explained above what it does I will further explain Alan s concepts about it. Upon completing the test, if the guesses are no more reliable than chance the computer passes meaning than the computer thinks. He also believes that If a machine passes the test it must behave verbally. If you deny the machines conscious you have no bases to believe other people are conscious (class notes). According to Professor Jefferson in Exploring Philosophy he believes the validity of the Turing Test is wrong, he argues that The only way by which one could be sure that a machine thinks is to be the machine and to feel oneself thinking (page 178). I agree with Jefferson because ultimately, we can explain why we believe it thinks but we truly don t know if it is. Searle disagrees with Alan Turing, he believes that no program that is purely symbolic can produce thoughts. That only biological beings can be conscious and that the Turing Test doesn t prove that it is conscious (class notes). The Moral Obligation Of Affluent Individuals The question on whether affluent individuals have a moral obligation to assist the poor is a widely controversial subject, and this was even apparent in our very own ethical reasoning class. So the question still stands, is it our duty to assist the poor? The answer is much simpler than people make it out to be. Yes. While this answer is widely based of off my own opinion as well as those of Peter Singer, I am prepared to defend my answer not only with the Singers evidence but also with my own thoughts and motives. But I don t believe that only the rich should feel the moral obligation to assist the poor, I believe everyone should do whatever we can to help one another. I do not believe that people should be forced into helping one another by laws and government authorities, but instead that it is the simply the right thing to do. First off I am going to explain the details of Singers argument for the moral obligation of affluent individuals to assist the poor. Singer basis his argument off utilitarian grounds, so generally promoting whatever promotes the most happiness for the most people. Here are Singers three main premises. First, if we have the power to prevent something bad from happening without having to sacrifice too much then morally we should do it. Second, poverty is the number one source of human misery. The Importance Of Artifice In Society Although many people may like to think of America as a honest and moral nation, it is no secret that artifice has cemented itself as an indispensable skill, exploited by many to achieve their own ambitions. Artifice, characterized through the usage of cunning devices or expedients to deceive others, is often utilized by politicians and organizations to help push their own agendas. As illustrated by Chris Hedges in his social commentary, Empire of Illusion, artifice has emerged to become so ubiquitous and essential throughout American society, whether in business or the entertainment industry. Essential, in the essence that without it, people in any industry are more likely to be disadvantaged in achieving their personal goals. In today s modern world, no area has seen more abuse of artifice than in the field of media and politics. Its common knowledge that newspapers skew reports to their own biases and politicians often tell half truths to cover up ulterior motives. Unfortunately, these politicians and media giants hold extremely influential positions in society, and their usage of artifice is extremely damaging to the integrity and accountability within the United States. As a result, the press as well as the general populace must utilize free speech to expose this behavior.
