How Did King Henry III Influence The Government
Henry II (1133 1189) was the grandson of Henry I, but only became king after having invaded
England in 1153 and forcing his second cousin, King Stephen to make him heir. He was only
able to invade due to his marriage with Eleanor of Aquitaine, as it made him Lord of Aquitaine
and gave him more power and influence in France. His succession to the throne in 1154 made
him commander of an empire which stretched from northern Scotland to south western Europe.
He made various significant changes to the empire during his rule. He controlled the power of the
Church and set in place various legal reforms which became the basis for the legal system still
used today. He was known for being ruthless and having a very bad temper, which were some of the

National Environmental Policy Act ( Nepa )
In the United States, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was enacted on January 1, 1970
and Environmental Protection Agency began operation December 2, 1970. In many developed
countries, since 1960s growing awareness about the side effects of unrestricted development and
industrialisation had pressured policymakers to establish environmental policies and agencies.
During that period, the policies were designed to focus on prompt and remedial action plans rather
than prevention tools. As a result, Command and Control (CAC) approach became the dominant
tool which is comprised of setting environmental standards (command) and penalising non
complied actions (control).
The experience with CAC during 70s and 80s suggests that the regulatory policies in practice cost
far greater than expected. Since CAC has been introduced by many countries, economists focused
on the economic evaluation of the approach in terms of its efficiency and cost effectiveness. Some
studies suggest that the environmental standards mandated by governments are hard to be set at an
efficient level because of legislative constraints, imperfect information, regional differences and non
uniformity of pollutants. Another issue with CAC is associated with enforcement problems such as
costs of monitoring and administration.
For the reasons mentioned above, new approach has been recommended by many economists. The
new policy is called Economic Instrument (EI) which provides incentives to companies or

Essay about Santa Claus Does Exist
Santa Claus Does Exist
So you don t believe in Santa Claus. It s understandable. We find ourselves in an age of pure
skepticism. We question everything. Science has taken hold of our lives, providing answers for all
questions and dismissing anything that cannot be explained as either myth or fiction. So it s quite
understandable why you don t believe, with no physical proof of his existence. It s indeed
understandable to lose sight of Father Christmas with the transformation of this holiday into one
that, as of late, is used commercially as a lucrative crutch solely to make profit. It s understandable
to abandon Santa Claus after hearing countless people deny his very physical or even spiritual
existence. After all, one tends to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the wreaths and Yule logs that come standard with this holiday comes a caring from deep in
the hearts of people unbeknownst to them at any other time of the year. At the sight of the
Christmas decor and the flames roaring at the hearth, a warmth envelops the heart, one with which
no flame, however hot, could compete. We see in our gift wrap and our greeting cards and our
holiday stockings an entirely new persona occupying this world we live in, reprieving us from the
daily heartaches we all know as familiar.
Santa Claus must exist. How else would you describe this change in the way humans interact during
these otherwise dreary winter months? Santa Claus is the catalyst of human goodness, sparking
within us a genuine care for our neighbor, bringing us together for this wonderful season. Think of a
world without Santa Claus!
While your intelligence is gnawing at the lack of proof (the absent shred of red cloth torn by the
fireplace or the nonexistent cookie crumbs leading from the tree up the chimney), I believe even
still, just as millions upon millions believe in some type of god. As you deny Santa Claus on the
grounds of no proof, I accept him on those same grounds. Who are we to deny something we cannot
understand and therefore cannot explain? No amount of persuasion can convince me that Santa
Claus does not exist through people who celebrate Christmas, just as Christians believe Jesus exists
through them today,

Federalists vs. Democratic Republicans
The United States of America was founded on a Constitution that was supposed to preserve our
freedoms and certain liberties. All Americans at that time wanted to keep America a free an
independent nation with rights for its people. However there was two different groups, the
Federalists lead by Alexander Hamilton and the Democratic Republicans led by Thomas Jefferson,
which thought this could be achieved in very different ways. Thomas Jefferson and Alexander
Hamilton were very different in their methods to try and develop America as a nation. The two
were very much alike because they both were avid Americans, and wanted to see the nation
succeed. Both men were very involved in the U.S. Government and tried to voice their opinions on

The Federalist party, including Hamilton, supported the British more than the French. Federalists
wanted to stay neutral in the French Revolution. Someone who was polar opposite of Alexander
Hamilton in their views was Thomas Jefferson, a member of the Democratic Republican Party.
Jefferson was in favor of a smaller central government with more power to the states. He perceived
that it was unconstitutional to have the federal government to have so much influence on daily life.
Jefferson thought that agriculture should be the backbone of the economy. He also did not support
the idea of a central bank, Jefferson thought that the U.S. should pay off all of its debt and stay out
of business affairs. Those who labor in the earth are the chosen people of god.....for substantial and
genuine virtue (Document D). Thomas thought that America should be the voice of ALL of the
people so he wanted the common people to be able to have more of an influence in the government.
Jefferson did not trust the wealthy people in government and thought that the more down to earth
farmers and commoners would keep them in check. A very prominent difference in Hamilton and
Jefferson was their views on the constitution. Powers not delegated to the United States by the
Constitution,

Summary Of Smartphone Addiction By Jessie Brown
In Jessie Brown: Who Says Smartphone Addiction is bad thing? The case for constant connectivity
(Brown, 2012), Brown claims that the cellphone is not the problem, in fact, it is the person and how
they choose to value their time while using smartphones. In the article Who says smart phone
addiction is a bad thing? The case for constant connectivity. (Toronto Life, 2012), Jesse Brown
breaks down his reasons and beliefs on the negativity surrounding smart phones that perceived as an
addiction. Correspondingly, Brown states that notification sounds and buzzing from our devices
tells us, we are important and wanted, however we fear that we won t be able to live without this
constant stream of reassuring stimulation. Moreover, Brown tries to convey that smartphones are
not the problem, we re the problem. We reply on smartphones for everything way more than we
need to. Furthermore, we make checking our smartphones our top priority by immediately jumping
when we hear sounds that indicate notifications. Accordingly, we are on high alert because of these
notifications, which could be anything from an important work update or a friend s text.... Show

intrusive, and if we can t find an app to do something we need, we can create an app that does.

Defining Modernism Essay
Defining Modernism
Modernism described as movement in arts would best be described as a movement that was used
to unit America after a period of crisis, it did this by it being centered on explorations into the
spiritual nature of men and the value of his society and institutions. In a way it was like realism
they too focused on the changes on society. The modernistic writers always wrote in a very formal
defined form.
Modernism also played a very important role as a movement in poetry. The way modernism did
this was it brought so much more opportunity to the poet as a way of writing. The poet is now
able to express themselves in new ways. If it was not for modernism who knows if we would be
talking about the works of Emily ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Modernists like realists both wanted to paint an unbiased, accurate picture of society by
confronting the problems of the individual and of the society. The only difference in the two is the
difference in societies. These principles could be called the tenents of Modernism.
My working definition of modernism would be a movement in American Literature that allowed
writers to be able to express themselves but at the same time be able to celebrate the changes that
are accruing around them. This movement also allowed poets to write about anything that they saw
which was thought to be modern. In short I guess it is somewhat safe to say that their writings
reflect ongoing changes that are occurring in their society.
As far representative themes go my definition ties into that. In nineteen thirty Hart Crane made a
visionary pilgrimage though America s geographical and emotional space. Around this time Crane
published his epic poem The Bridge, which celebrates the Brooklyn Bridge as both an
architectural achievement and a symbol of American modernity. Because of the type of descriptive
writing that was being used the voice in the writings were in deep detail and strong emphasis on
words were also used to help get the point across.
This time in American Literature is a very important one. Without this strong movement we today
would not have the please of being

The Ethics Of Academic Integrity
Academic integrity continues to be an important issue of public concern especially in higher
education institutions. There are countless articles that report students cheating on examinations,
plagiarizing written assignments, and collaborating with others when such behavior is prohibited.
Conversely, there are reports of viable honorsystems that have been implemented in schools that
make such unethical behavior less pervasive. Both of these extremes, beg the question whether an
honor code, such as the Stevens Honor System, is the most effective way to curb immoral behavior
and promote a high regard for honesty. As Henry David Thoreaumakes it clear in his essay, Civil
Disobedience, governments should not be allowed to impede on individuals consciences and
behaviors. Thus, the honor code should only be a set of minimalistic rules that promote each
individual s personal integrity so they can act honorably based on their own conscience. It should
not however, in any way, legislate or seek to punish students for unlawfulness. By drawing from
Hsun Tzu s ideas in Encouraging Learning, an honor code ought to be treated as a cornerstone on
which a foundation of moral and ethical academic behavior is built. Hsun Tzu, a Chinese
philosopher, poses many interesting points about the connection between learning and moral
behavior in shaping students into lawful citizens. The success of an honor code depends on the
trust it places in individuals beliefs and how they are applied to

Human Memory Essay
To start with is to understand human memory is a diverse set of cognitive capacities by which we
reconstruct past experiences and, retain information usually for present purposes. Memory is one
of the most important ways by which our histories define our current actions and experiences.
Most notably, the human ability to conjure up long gone but specific episodes of our lives is both
familiar and puzzling, and is a key aspect of personal identity. Memoryseems to be a source of
knowledge. We remember experiences and events which happened and are not currently happening,
so memory differs from perception, so memory is unlike pure imagination. Yet, in practice, there
can be close interactions between remembering, perceiving, and imagining.... Show more content on

Symbols red traffic lights, pointing fingers, road signs, etc. can code quite complex messages
quickly and effectively.
Our brains evolved to code and interpret complex stimuli such as images, colors, structures, sounds,
smells, tastes, touch, positions, emotions and language. We use these to make sophisticated models
of the world we live in. Our memories store all of these very effectively. (Mindtools)
Unfortunately, a lot of the information we have to remember in modern life is presented differently
as words printed on a page. While writing is a rich and sophisticated medium for conveying
complex arguments, our brains do not easily encode written information, making it difficult to
remember. (Margalit, 2002)
To remember people s names needs
A slightly different approach from all the others explained so far in this section. The techniques
used, though, are quite simple:
Face association: Examine a person s face discreetly when you are introduced. Try to find an
unusual feature, whether ears, hairline, forehead, eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth, complexion, etc.
Create an association between that characteristic, the face, and the name in your mind. The
association may be to link the person with someone else you know with the same name.
Alternatively it may be to associate a rhyme or image of the name with the person s face or
defining feature.
Repetition: When you are introduced, ask for

Effects Of Tyranny
The accumulation of all powers... in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many (is) the very
definition of tyranny. In 1787, the Constitution was written in Philadelphia and due to the
weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation (the inability to enforce taxes and the fear of tyranny
starting), James Madison was worried about framing a new Constitutional and tyranny arising. The
thought of one group of people having more power than another worries people. Tyranny can be
shown in many different ways and it affects everyone. Tyranny of individual states and central
government can be presented with the people in the states being able to ignore taxes. This would
cause chaos and the government wouldn t have control over the people. The chief... Show more

...the constant aim is to divide and arrange the several offices in such a manner as that they may be
in check on the other.... (The three branches) should not be so far separated as to have no
constitutional control over each other. Madison is trying to express the idea of the three branches
being too far apart. He thinks that constitutional control is going to come only when the branches
are closer. Helping one another out (checking each other) makes them equal, preventing tyranny.
The legislature can check the power of the chief executive by having Congress approve the
president s nominations. The president can check the power of the Supreme Court by nominating
judges, and the Supreme Court checks the Senate by declaring laws unconstitutional. The checks
and balances system guarded against Tyranny by making sure no government is more powerful
than another. Each branch is needed to make the government work because without one of the
branches, the wouldn t be equality and the significance of one branch tells a lot about how
important all three branches are. The three branches check each other for the power and

A definition of a Parable is a short allegorical story designed to illustrate or teach some truth,

the Bronx. The performers are, the school principal Sister Aloysius Beauvier; she is of the order
of the Sisters of Charity age about 55, she is watchful, reserved, and unsentimental. Father
Brendan Flynn; a working class priest age late thirties, Sister James a nun also of the Sisters of

mind on her teaching ability. She criticizes her enthusiasm for teaching history. Clams her love
for history risks swaying the children to value it over other subjects. Sister James main goal is to
be a good teacher and have the students like her. According to, Sister Aloysius having the students
like you is a weakness, they must fear you and if something occurs in the classroom that you don t
understand, you must come to me. Next Sister Aloysius puts Doubts in Sister James mind about
Father Flynn. Sister James opinion of him is that he is a brilliant man and a great speaker. Sister

Student Athletes Paid
Students who attend college as athletes face the everyday struggles of being a full time athlete and
a full time student. It has been long debated whether or not time restricted athletes should be
compensated for the work they do on the field. Student athletes should be paid for their work as
athletes, but because of NCAA amateurism rules, they are left with a busy training schedule, no
athlete compensation if injury occurs, and no steady income.
Student athletes have highly active training schedules and therefore have no time to get a job and
support themselves with a steady income. While regular students are able to have part time jobs to

However, scholarships can go away at anytime if the athlete is injured or is not eligible to play
the next year. Nevertheless situations where a scholarship has to be taken away could be
avoided by providing the athlete with money and by paying college players, they will have the
money to pay for treatment, hospitalization, rehabilitation and other expenses when it comes to
injuries (Green Garage). In this case they would be able to see professionals about injuries, and
this could further their chance of an easy recovery, so no scholarship has to be revoked. There
are many other downsides to athletes receiving a scholarship but no side income. Lauren
Deutsch is a college student who writes news for her college news site called The Crimson

their scholarship, they are left with no saved money from not being able to work a job therefore
not only has no money but no way to pay for school the following year (Deutsch). Paying college
athletes will give the athlete a chance to have some money just in case under any circumstance.

How Does Harper Lee Use Gender Bias In To Kill A Mockingbird
In Harper Lee s, To Kill A Mockingbird, she illustrates conflicts in modern day society. Classism
and Gender Bias were common terms during the 1930s. During this time, segregation was strongly

Evolution Of Presidential Elections
The U.S. constitution assigned the task of handling elections to the states with the result being
fifty diverse election systems. At the legislative level, elections for the U.S. House of
Representatives are held every two years and the Senate elections are conducted every six years.
Typically, the president s party will lose seats in most elections; however, incumbents have a strong
propensity for winning reelection. The average campaign cost for a House of Representatives seat
is over $1.7 million and the average cost for a Senate race is $10.5 million. Thus, candidates spend

The first phase is the nominating process. The states work with the national parties to firm up their

had to win all of the delegates in order win the state has been used by the Republican Party.
Recently, the Republican Party has moved to the same system as the Democrats. The Democratic

The Importance Of A Natural Disaster
Disagreeing with this statement is the argument of scale and how this could be used to justify why
a natural disaster could exist. A devastating natural event could provide worldwide disruption and
no one could do anything to mitigate against it. This is what could be used to describe a natural
disaster. Nothing human increases the impact in such a way that could without human interference
it would be just another natural event. An example of this is the Yellowstone volcano. With
predictions of the eruption being VEI 8, this event would cause a worldwide destruction,
covering the USA in thick ash which by itself would cause devastating consequences to the
entire country. This is noted in Keller and DeVecchio s Natural Hazards book when they state
that a quantity of 100km3 of pyroclastic debris including ash would cover the size of Manhattan
to a height of 1.6km which is 1000 times the amount emitted by Mt St. Helens in 1980. This size
of eruption would have a thickness of 100m near the crater of Yellowstone and 1m thick up to
60mi away from the crater. (Keller and DeVecchio, 2012). This size of eruption would cause
health problems and fatalities all across the North of America and could seriously affect global
weather patterns. The 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption was a VEI 6, and caused a global cooling of
temperature down by 0.4В°C (Self, Zhao, Holasek, Torres, King, 1999). This had extremely

American rock and roll has dominated many areas around the world, but primarily with the British
music scene.
In the 1960 s British artists took their modified edition of rock and roll, crossed the Atlantic

Invasion. The British Invasion is the movement where bands from the United Kingdom became
popular in the United States. It involved the virtual control of AM radio and the record industry
in the United States by British artists, particularly the groups who had confirmed to be experts at
recycling the American rhythm and blues and rockabilly songs of the 1950 s (Burns 2004). This
movement is described as one of the most fascinating aspects of rock revolution that stimulated
young American audiences by a second hand version of American music traditions and filtered

Prior to the 1980 s, women were involved, but were not major recruiting targets as they are today.
In Europe, women became tangled in the neo Nazis and in Chechen, female suicide bombers
were known as black widows (Huckerby, 2015). Many groups began heavily recruiting women
into their organizations for the purpose of female suicide bombers more than 30 years ago. The
Syrian Social Nationalist Party recruited Sana a Youcef Mehaidli for the very purpose of suicide
bombing. Mehaidli is known as the first female suicide bomber recruited to a secular group who
committed an attack in early 1985; Mehaidli s truck, armed with explosives, managed to cause
harm to four individuals, two of which died (Sofer Addison, 2012). Upon the successful integration
of females into secular groups, terrorist organizations began heavily recruiting women to fight
alongside them for their religious

counseling practice in the 21st century.
Summary
Christian counseling, in its purest form, is a covenant between a caregiver and a care seeker to

Using Subliminal Messages
Have you ever been in this situation? You have plenty of things to do, and your nerves are
basically up on your neck. You feel that a single move can destroy everything that you have
planned for, and can wreak havoc in any aspect of your life, such as your relationships or career.
Well, guess what, you are not alone. However, many have learned to manage quite well any
stressful environment and even keep themselves relaxed despite the mounting pressure, all thanks
to meditation.
How Meditation Can Help You Relax
Perhaps you have heard about this: it is all in the mind. They say that everything you feel is caused
by your heart. The truth is it is the brain that controls your emotions. When it perceives something

Meditation, in general, can declutter your mind. Sometimes you feel a lot of pressure simply
because you are thinking too much. By meditating, you bring yourself to the present moment, so
you do not have to worry about the mistakes you have done in the past or the results that can
happen in the future.
Using Subliminal Messages
During meditation, you can also bombard your subconscious mind with subliminal messages. These
are usually affirmations that can help change your manner of thinking.
Here is an example: You feel so tensed about the coming sales presentation in front of the different
managers in your organization. While meditating, you can utilize the following subliminal
messages:
I can do this.
I am confident I can beat these tensed nerves.
I have prepared myself well.
I am ready to take on this challenge.
The subliminal messages may be repeated quite a number of times to make them more effective.
Nevertheless, it does not remove the fact that with them, you may just get the courage, motivation,
and power you need to rise above the everyday

Comparing The Flea and Valentine Essay
Comparing The Flea and Valentine
The flea is a metaphysical poem about a man trying to argue a virgin into bed to have sexual
intercourse with him. This poem was most likely written to amuse the readers and probably more
for a larger male audience. The poem was written in the late 17th century in a period where sex
within marriage was like a household chore, but socially, sex before marriage was like a sin,
because society was extremely religious. John Donne is attempting to get these thoughts out of her
head and persuade her to have sex with him.
Metaphysical poets use a lot of elaborate and extended comparisons.
They wrote energetic and vigorous poems that went against the common literature of the time.
There are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The poet points out that losing her virginity is not a sin.
A sin, nor shame, nor loss of maidenhead
He tries to reverse her views that both society and herself share. He is very persuasive in this
poem and uses the flea many times as a symbol of their sexual union and uses many metaphors.
He uses many sly phrases also which could easily win his argument and I feel it is making her feel
guilty and starting to make her confused and think about the prospects of them having sex.
I think that during the end of the first stanza the poet starts to become quite theatrical.
Yet this enjoys it before it woo, And pamper d swells in one blood made of two; And this, alas! Is
more than we would do.
This could be referring to sex. The flea enjoys the blood and so does the man enjoy foreplay. The
pamper d swells could be that of sexual organs before sex and yet, because that is not happening,
the flea is having a better time at the moment than he is, by sucking their blood.
I think that by using this comparison, John Donne is being very intellectual and at this point I feel
he may win his argument.
The second stanza, John Donne becomes weaker as the girl starts to defend herself and he tries to
convey his love for her.
John Donne, in this stanza I feel becomes more intimate and uses alliteration and much more poetic
techniques. At the beginning of the second stanza, I would assume that the girl has got up and left
him.

Age Restrictions On Social Media
Even with the dangerous developments in social media over the past several years, many parents
have chosen to allow their children to use these sites despite age restrictions. There are three
reasons to argue for age restrictions on social media sites: lack of supervision by parents, targeting
of children by pedophiles, and the prevalence of children falsifying their age. The ability of
pedophiles to conceivably target children with social mediaproves that this is an issue that parents
need to examine so that they may better protect their children. The threat from pedophiles causes
an enormous problem for millions of children on social media sites. Unfortunately, Western
Daily Press states that Pedophiles can get away with grooming young teenagers on social media
sites. My essay will argue that age restrictions need to be in place, and additional regulations
should ensure that law enforcement agencies have the tools required to supervise underage
children s use of social media, including Facebook and Twitter. Quoting from Business Wire,
three out of four parents feel that social network sites are not protecting children. According to
Irish Independent, four out of ten children falsify their age when using social media. I will also
argue that additional research on this topic can be used to raise the awareness of parents, and can
also help to alert the children themselves to the danger. My essay will also examine questions, such

Sme Mergers
It becomes very obvious the geographical location also play a significant role in the merger
process, which was not a factor in the Ole Jacob article. When two colleges are not
geographically located such as mentioned above a much larger problem exists. Research says
Rutgers Camden is located in North Jersey; Rowan University is located in South Jersey. The
campuses are roughly half an hour apart by car (assuming no traffic delays) or between 45 minutes
to almost an hour apart by bus . This illustrates that simply getting students, staff and faculty to and
fro between campuses of one merged university can become an issue that those considering non
contiguous geographic mergers will have to face (Elliot Major, 2001). Another contrast from...

Given higher education s current process of reinvention and the history of mergers as part of
American higher education in particular, it is unsurprising that mergers continue to be seen as a
way to solve many of the cost issues facing colleges and universities today. It is also unsurprising
that mergers are growing more complex given the modern university environment s assorted real
and intellectual property, related enterprises, and physical assets. Indeed, many colleges, while not
averse to the idea, are cautious. A final contrasting point which makes the Skodvin, (1999) research
more suspect and less creditable is that laws have changed in recent years which has expanded the
reasons why educational institutions are looking harder at mergers and consolidations. The rational
may have been relevant for a particular segment of educational institutions at a particular time but

Theme Of Symbolism In Young Goodman Brown
Symbolism within Young Goodman Brown Within many Gothic works, symbolism is profoundly
used, especially in the tale of Young Goodman Brown written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Was Faith
his innocent companion or his trust in his religion? Why does Faith wear pink ribbons, innocence
much like that of a child or a deep symbolic meaning? Deception is yet another symbol within this
tale, because not everything is as it seams. By Faith, representation of colors, and deception,
Hawthorne demonstrates Gothic symbolism within his tale of Young Goodman Brown. Faith is trust
and belief in someone or something, mainly within religious practices. However, Faith has also
become a popular name. Within the passage, Faith is the name of Goodman Brown s wife. In the
beginning, Faith desperately begs Brown to stay at home instead of departing on the journey for
the reason that Faith was timid and scared to death. However, as most men do, he does not listen
and went on his expedition anyways; he left his dear Faith behind. By leaving his wife Faith,
Brown also leaves behind his actual faith in God on his journey in to the forest (Stoehr 393).
Therefore, in his short story Hawthorne symbolizes Brown s wife as his own faith. By leaving her,
it demonstrates him leaving not only his wife, but his faith.
Pink is an innocent hue of color, is it not? In addition to being a symbol within the passage,
Goodman Brown s wife Faith wears pink ribbons in her hair. At first glance, pink is a

Deadly and Destructive Hurricanes
Deadly and destructive. These are two words that describe the horrible natural disaster we now
call a hurricane. An average hurricane can cause thousands, millions, or billions of dollars in
repairs! Scientists are always trying to warn people when a hurricane could be coming, but even
scientists make mistakes so, just like other natural disasters, you should always be prepared if a
hurricane does come your way. A hurricane can be very deadly if people are not prepared or on
high land. A hurricane can be very deadly and destructive even if you are ready for the oncoming
hurricane. Deadly and destructive.
A hurricane is a huge, swirling storm with winds ranging from 74 MPH to over 155 MPH
(Manolis 5, 10 11). The name hurricane comes from the name of the god of evil and wind
(Gibbons 3, Woods and Woods 6). A hurricane starts when warm, evaporated water rises at the eye.
This air spins upwards and sucks up more water and water vapor. If the temperature of the water
gets up to or more than 81 degrees Fahrenheit, the winds get stronger, and cumulonimbus clouds are
formed. The whole
process keeps getting bigger and rain starts to fall. When the wind speed is up to 74 MPH, the
storm is called a hurricane (Gibbons 4 5).
Hurricanes are classified with the Saffir Simpson Hurricane Sale. This scale was created around
1970, when Herbert Saffir and Robert Simpson invented it so meteorologists could warn people
about hurricanes (Gibbons 9). The hurricane scale has five

Through Deaf Eyes Documentary Analysis
While watching the PBS documentary called Through Deaf Eyes, the part that interested me the
most was the deaf schools. Deaf Schools now range all around the United States. They are
interesting to me because they are different than a public or private school you see everyday.
They also interest me because I would like to know more about them than what the video talks
about. The three topics that interested me the most about deaf schools was how they started, how
today s deaf schools are, and what is different about deaf schools. The beginning of deaf schools
is part of my interest in deaf schools. The first permanent school for deaf children in America was
opened in Hartford, Connecticut in 1817. In the beginning he started out with only seven students
and head teacher from France named Laurent Clerc. Laurent Clerc was also the one who brought
French sign language. The school was later called American School for the Deaf or ASD. American

The Cholera Spread In London In The 19th Century
The cholera has been the most terrifying disease spreading in London in the middle of nineteenth
century, which is an infection caused by strains of the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. In the
summertime of 1854 London was known as one of the most advanced and fashionable cities in
the world with almost 2.5 million people living there. Because of the overpopulation, the city was
having a difficult time to provide basic needs for the residents. According to Johnson (2006) the
biggest existing problem within the city at that time was its lack of waste removal system. The
human trash was piling up from the houses to the rivers and drinking water, which has led to the

was colder than the water found at the rival pumps; it had a pleasant hint of carbonation (p.30).
He also discovered that there was not a single death recorded among the workers at Lion
Brewery on Broad Street. They were rarely seen to drink water from the pump because of the
liquor they received as a part of their wages (Johnson, 2006, p.142). Another important

Process Of Negotiation Essay
Negotiation is a fundamental process used in resolving conflicts, making business deals, and in
managing working relationships with others. Negotiations occur for two reasons: (1) to resolve a
problem or dispute between parties, or (2) to create something new that neither party could do on
its own. Negotiating is a critical, every day skill that is essential anytime it is necessary to create
short term or long lasting agreements. For example: In 1996, Juwan Howard signed a contract
worth over $100 million with the Miami Heatand nearly became the highest paid NBA player

Psalm 23 Exegesis Analysis
Psalm 23 Exegesis
Psalm 23 is a realistic hopeful passage written by David about the presence of trials in his life
versus the provision and relationship the Lord has for him. This Psalm is filled with metaphors and
creative imagery that is best understood through contextual knowledge. Much of David s writing in
this passage is about his struggles and trials, while the rest is essentially about the faithfulness of
God. Psalm 23:1 says The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. . According to Schmoop.com,
the word want means lack , meaning that David is saying he will not lack anything because the
Lord is His shepherd ( The Lord is My Shepherd ). David says in Psalm 23:2 that the Lord makes
him lie down in green pastures . However, in Israel there are no green pastures, in the more
commonly associated definition. There are no pastures that are actually green in Israel
therefore it is only an allusion to the metaphor of the Lord being David s shepherd. A shepherd
will lead his flock of sheep to grassy pastures to eat. This reaffirms David s statement that he will
not lack. Him referring to God as his shepherd and saying that he will make him to lay down in
green pastures means that the Lord will have him lie down (rest) in places of provision
/sustenance similar to a shepherd leading his sheep to sleep in a rich pasture (Know, That the
World May, Green Pastures. ). David also says that God will lead him by still waters : another
metaphor of rest. In Psalm 23:3,

Characteristics Of A Freshwater Lake
Figure 1. The zones of a freshwater lake (Smith and Smith 2001).
Within the lentic ecosystems, temperature plays a crucial role. Lake temperatures does not variate
drastically, but does change gradually with every season of the year. Summer, the thermic
stratification of lakes, can be studied in different layers (Figure 2). The superior level of a lake that
is terminally stratified, is known to be epilimnion, which is the warmer part of the fresh water body.
This water remains in the superior part because as the water gets warmer, the light of the sun
becomes clearer than the dense water downward. The metalimnion is the known layer that would
be ubicated beneath. This layer is defined by the thermocline where the temperature slightly
decreases. In this phase, the temperature decreases 1 В°C for every single meter that descends.
Hypolimnion would be the last stratified layer in a lake. This deep and cutoff from sources of air.
(Korstad 2017)
Another crucial component is the description of the characteristics of a lake is to monitor the
quantity of oxygen and carbon dioxide to various depths. There is a reciprocal relation that exists
between these two elements when they are compared to the depth of a lake (Figure 2) (Korstad
2017). A lake has the capacity top adhere oxygen by absorption or photosynthesis. The levels high
oxygen is necessary to maintain the necessary nutrients inside the water, and at the same time
providing a source food to all fishes. It is common to see

Conclusion: Cheever s use of literary devices drives the plot of the ideal mid century lifestyle.
Literary Analysis of The Swimmer The Swimmer by John Cheever was published in 1964. The
short story show the reader the emptiness many experienced during the mid century white flight.
The Swimmer gives a view into the life of Ned Merrill, an affluent suburban man s life. Cheever
uses symbolism, imagery, and tone to convey the theme of narcissism and suburban emptiness
during the 1960 s. In The Swimmer, Cheever uses symbolism as a tool to portray the theme of
the short story. One symbol the author uses throughout the story is pools. The description of
each pool shows the reader how Ned Merrill changes as a character. At the beginning of the story,
the pools represent Merrill s youthfulness and energy. The first pools Ned encounters represent his
life at a high point. These pools are described as a type of paradise (The Swimmer Symbols).

story I would find out which lucky villager won something nice. I smiled as I read about the young
children playing with the rocks and the husbands and wives gathering and gossiping. I imagined

The Diary Of War, National Pride And The National...

History

The Preface to War; National Pride in the Balkans Walter S. Zapotoczny, an author and historian,
once said, Each of the great powers believed they had something to gain from war, fostering the
national pride and the national positioning that made World War Iinevitable. This is true, as
imperialism and militarism were a large part of national pride. Austria Hungary, for example,
wanted Serbia. The German military was expanding rapidly. With each argument countries got into,
hatred became stronger. Eventually, the European tensions snapped and everything toppled into
terrible war. World War I was inevitable due to each of the great powers being imperialistic,
militaristic, and prepared for war.
During the early 1900 s, the European great powers believed they all had something to gain from
expanding. Land in Africa was being claimed by countries such as France and Great Britain. A
main goal for all the countries of Europe was growing. Austria and Hungary joined together into a
dual monarchy in 1867. This country annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1908. Germany was
annoyed at not having as much space in Africa, which is imperialistic because it is territorial.
Imperialism was popular during the time. The great powers believed they could become better
through imperialism. In this case, imperialism is showing national pride because the expansion of a

human. When autonomous cars start being widely produced it will affect almost everything that is
near or in the world of automotive Technology.
The autonomous car is coming without a doubt, the only question is when will it arrive? The Ford
company predicted that they will start producing a car without pedals or a steering wheel by
2021(Dekker). Many if, not all automakers try their hardest to produce the car as soon as they can,
it will be a couple years before the technology is ready for the everyday consumer use. Nevertheless,
its more than just automakers that are in this race for autonomous cars anymore. Technology
companies like Intel and NVIDIA are in the race for the autonomous car and are against some
companies and are making partners with others. The china company CMU is partnering with GM
for the autonomous car project with a contract that cost $5 million. When Automakers are

Nazi Propaganda, Myths, And Common Stories Essay
Between February 13, 1945 and February 15, 1945, the German city of Dresden was decimated
by Allied bombers. The bombing run, carried out by the RAF and USAAF, raised ethical and
moral debates because the city was neither a industrial nor a political center contributing to the
Nazi war effort. In order to determine the underlying motives behind the Allied attack and the
extent to which the attack was justified, the investigation will analyze Nazi propaganda, myths,
and common stories in response to the attack, the Yalta Conference in February 1945 with events
in the winter of 1945 leading up to the attack, and the impact of the attack on the German war
efforts. Word Count: 213 Section B: Summary of Evidence The Bombing Allies utilized area
bombing techniques to target Dresden by indiscriminately dropping incendiary bombs, causing
civilian causalities. On the evening of February 13, 1945, 800 British RAF bombers
indiscriminately delivered 1,400 tons of high explosive bombs and 1,100 tons of incendiaries on
Dresden. The Allies pointed out that unless Dresden was bombed, the Germans could route rail
traffic through Dresden to compensate for any damage caused to Berlin and Leipzig. Nazi
Propaganda German Reich Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels hoped to elicit sympathy
through global media outlets. Following the attack, intentionally dispersed false information
regarding the bombing to elicit sympathy for the German war effort. Germany

Of The Many Books That People Have Given Or Suggested Over
Of the many books that people have given or suggested over the years after my conversion to the
Catholic faith, one is the Introduction to Devout Life by St Francis de Sales. So many times, I
put this book aside and never dove into it and as I read if for this class I regret not reading it
earlier because of richness in its content for those who which to live a good Christian life and are
not religious. This is precisely the audience that St. Francis de Sales wrote this book for. He wrote
it so that the laity could live a devout or holy life without having to live in a monastery or convent.
The Introduction to the Devout Lifewas first published on January 1609, by Rigaud in Lyons,
France. His book could not have come at a better time... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
St. Francis walks the reader through the steps of purging mortal sin out of her life and making a
confession. He adds that this is a duty but that God does not give us duties that are impossible so
we can rest assured that this duty is attainable. He then tells the reader that the way to rid herself
of her attachments to mortal sin is by becoming aware of the attachments to the sin and confess
them with a contrite heart. As the end of this section comes to a close, he provides daily
meditations and spiritual exercises to help on the journey. In part two, he stresses the two
principal means of deepening this union with God. These two principal means are the
sacraments in which God comes to us and prayer in which we go to God. In short part two is an
instruction manual on how to pray, worship, and receive the sacraments. For part three St.
Francis offers some advice on friendships and elaborates on the virtues that are necessary for one
progression in the spiritual life. Part four of the book deals with the temptations that arise when
we choose to live a holy life. St. Francis counsels on how to avoid these temptations and to
continue forward. In the last part, he advises Philothea to take a step back and refresh to regain
strength so that she may press forward and advance further in the devout life. It is in the second
section of this book that St Francis de

Love In Romeo And Juliet Essay
William Shakespeare uses a range of techniques to convey the theme of love in Romeo and Juliet.
Romeo and Juliet is play about the tragedy of a couple desperately in love and want to marry,
however, their parents forbid it as they are both from enemy families. Romeo is a Montague and
the Juliet is a Capulet. Juliet s parents wants her to marry someone of their choosing instead, in
which Juliet did not truly love, and they would disown her if she were to not do so.
William Shakespeare conveys the theme of love by introducing two families with an ancient
grudge among other characters. The Montagues, and the Capulets. Romeo, a Montague, also
Friar Lawrence s son, goes to Juliet s (a Capulet), party by invitation from Mercutio, Romeo s
cousin. Juliet is 14 years old, and getting ready to marry. Her parents, Lord and Lady Capulet,
want her to wed Paris, who is pretty much just a random guy in which her parents see fit to marry
their daughter. The Capulets also have Tybalt, the son of Lady Capulet s brother, Juliet s Cousin
and also Romeo s enemy. Prince Escalus, who is the Prince of Verona, the symbol of... Show more

To start, Shakespeare uses daggers and swords as a symbol of death, the idea of violence, rage
and revenge. The frequent civil wars between the Montague and Capulet families show the
rampant feelings and emotions of the characters in the play. Another important use of
symbolism in Romeo and Juliet is the poison. Poison has both a literal purpose in the play (eg.
The suicide of Romeo) and also used as a symbol for hatred, feud (eg. The battle between the
Capulet and Montague family), but also love. When Romeo finds Juliet is dead, he drinks poison
he bought from the Apothecary, symbolizing Romeo s unbridled love for Juliet, and how he just
cannot live without her, Here s to my love! O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus I die

Behavior-Specific Praise
Teachers of students with or at risk for emotional or behavioral disabilities (EBD) face countless
stressful professional challenges throughout their careers. Students with EBD are being scattered
amongst General Education classrooms and can often exhibit behavioral changes in which many
teachers who have not had proper training or experience in managing may find overwhelming. One
strategy to help maintain engagement and reduce behavioral challenges in a classroom that
includes students with or at risk for EBD is to increase the rate of BehaviorSpecific Praise (BSP).
Offering students praise in the form of a statement which explains which acceptable behavior they
are being praised for can enhance the student s ability to remain on task and engaged in classroom
activities and discussions. Professional development in the area of BSP is necessary in developing
teachers who are more prepared to effectively face the challenges of having students with EBD.
Many strategies have been suggested for training teachers in the use of BSP, each with different
methods of presenting the information to educators. The researchers in this study believe that
further training in BSP is needed in order to produce positive... Show more content on

The percentages of on task behavior were averaged out in order to produce a correlation between
teacher rates of BSP and the student engagement, and the majority of the findings produced a

the study, if the training they received was useful. Teachers reported that the likelihood of
continuing to utilize the BSP strategy was high, and that they would be reporting the positive
results in their classrooms to their colleagues as well. A more interesting response from teachers
was that, despite the effectiveness of BSP, they found it difficult to execute the

  • 4. National Environmental Policy Act ( Nepa ) In the United States, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was enacted on January 1, 1970 and Environmental Protection Agency began operation December 2, 1970. In many developed countries, since 1960s growing awareness about the side effects of unrestricted development and industrialisation had pressured policymakers to establish environmental policies and agencies. During that period, the policies were designed to focus on prompt and remedial action plans rather than prevention tools. As a result, Command and Control (CAC) approach became the dominant tool which is comprised of setting environmental standards (command) and penalising non complied actions (control). The experience with CAC during 70s and 80s suggests that the regulatory policies in practice cost far greater than expected. Since CAC has been introduced by many countries, economists focused on the economic evaluation of the approach in terms of its efficiency and cost effectiveness. Some studies suggest that the environmental standards mandated by governments are hard to be set at an efficient level because of legislative constraints, imperfect information, regional differences and non uniformity of pollutants. Another issue with CAC is associated with enforcement problems such as costs of monitoring and administration. For the reasons mentioned above, new approach has been recommended by many economists. The new policy is called Economic Instrument (EI) which provides incentives to companies or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Science has taken hold of our lives, providing answers for all questions and dismissing anything that cannot be explained as either myth or fiction. So it s quite understandable why you don t believe, with no physical proof of his existence. It s indeed understandable to lose sight of Father Christmas with the transformation of this holiday into one that, as of late, is used commercially as a lucrative crutch solely to make profit. We see in our gift wrap and our greeting cards and our holiday stockings an entirely new persona occupying this world we live in, reprieving us from the daily heartaches we all know as familiar. Santa Claus must exist. How else would you describe this change in the way humans interact during these otherwise dreary winter months? Santa Claus is the catalyst of human goodness, sparking within us a genuine care for our neighbor, bringing us together for this wonderful season. Think of a world without Santa Claus! As you deny Santa Claus on the grounds of no proof, I accept him on those same grounds. Who are we to deny something we cannot understand and therefore cannot explain? • 8. Defining Modernism Essay Defining Modernism Modernism described as movement in arts would best be described as a movement that was used to unit America after a period of crisis, it did this by it being centered on explorations into the spiritual nature of men and the value of his society and institutions. In a way it was like realism they too focused on the changes on society. The modernistic writers always wrote in a very formal defined form. Modernism also played a very important role as a movement in poetry. The way modernism did this was it brought so much more opportunity to the poet as a way of writing. The poet is now able to express themselves in new ways. If it was not for modernism who knows if we would be talking about the works of Emily ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Modernists like realists both wanted to paint an unbiased, accurate picture of society by confronting the problems of the individual and of the society. The only difference in the two is the difference in societies. These principles could be called the tenents of Modernism. My working definition of modernism would be a movement in American Literature that allowed writers to be able to express themselves but at the same time be able to celebrate the changes that are accruing around them. This movement also allowed poets to write about anything that they saw which was thought to be modern. In short I guess it is somewhat safe to say that their writings reflect ongoing changes that are occurring in their society. As far representative themes go my definition ties into that. In nineteen thirty Hart Crane made a visionary pilgrimage though America s geographical and emotional space. Around this time Crane published his epic poem The Bridge, which celebrates the Brooklyn Bridge as both an architectural achievement and a symbol of American modernity. Because of the type of descriptive writing that was being used the voice in the writings were in deep detail and strong emphasis on words were also used to help get the point across. This time in American Literature is a very important one. Without this strong movement we today would not have the please of being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Ethics Of Academic Integrity Academic integrity continues to be an important issue of public concern especially in higher education institutions. There are countless articles that report students cheating on examinations, plagiarizing written assignments, and collaborating with others when such behavior is prohibited. Conversely, there are reports of viable honorsystems that have been implemented in schools that make such unethical behavior less pervasive. Both of these extremes, beg the question whether an honor code, such as the Stevens Honor System, is the most effective way to curb immoral behavior and promote a high regard for honesty. As Henry David Thoreaumakes it clear in his essay, Civil Disobedience, governments should not be allowed to impede on individuals consciences and behaviors. Thus, the honor code should only be a set of minimalistic rules that promote each individual s personal integrity so they can act honorably based on their own conscience. It should not however, in any way, legislate or seek to punish students for unlawfulness. By drawing from Hsun Tzu s ideas in Encouraging Learning, an honor code ought to be treated as a cornerstone on which a foundation of moral and ethical academic behavior is built. Hsun Tzu, a Chinese philosopher, poses many interesting points about the connection between learning and moral behavior in shaping students into lawful citizens. The success of an honor code depends on the trust it places in individuals beliefs and how they are applied to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Memory is one of the most important ways by which our histories define our current actions and experiences. Most notably, the human ability to conjure up long gone but specific episodes of our lives is both familiar and puzzling, and is a key aspect of personal identity. Nothing human increases the impact in such a way that could without human interference it would be just another natural event. An example of this is the Yellowstone volcano. With predictions of the eruption being VEI 8, this event would cause a worldwide destruction, covering the USA in thick ash which by itself would cause devastating consequences to the entire country. This is noted in Keller and DeVecchio s Natural Hazards book when they state that a quantity of 100km3 of pyroclastic debris including ash would cover the size of Manhattan to a height of 1.6km which is 1000 times the amount emitted by Mt St. Helens in 1980. This poem was most likely written to amuse the readers and probably more for a larger male audience. The poem was written in the late 17th century in a period where sex within marriage was like a household chore, but socially, sex before marriage was like a sin, because society was extremely religious. He is very persuasive in this poem and uses the flea many times as a symbol of their sexual union and uses many metaphors. He uses many sly phrases also which could easily win his argument and I feel it is making her feel guilty and starting to make her confused and think about the prospects of them having sex. I think that during the end of the first stanza the poet starts to become quite theatrical. Yet this enjoys it before it woo, And pamper d swells in one blood made of two; And this, alas! Is more than we would do. This could be referring to sex. The flea enjoys the blood and so does the man enjoy foreplay. The pamper d swells could be that of sexual organs before sex and yet, because that is not happening, the flea is having a better time at the moment than he is, by sucking their blood. I think that by using this comparison, John Donne is being very intellectual and at this point I feel he may win his argument. The second stanza, John Donne becomes weaker as the girl starts to defend herself and he tries to convey his love for her. John Donne, in this stanza I feel becomes more intimate and uses alliteration and much more poetic techniques. At the beginning of the second stanza, I would assume that the girl has got up and left him.

Was Faith his innocent companion or his trust in his religion? Why does Faith wear pink ribbons, innocence much like that of a child or a deep symbolic meaning? Deception is yet another symbol within this tale, because not everything is as it seams. By Faith, representation of colors, and deception, Hawthorne demonstrates Gothic symbolism within his tale of Young Goodman Brown. Faith is trust and belief in someone or something, mainly within religious practices. However, Faith has also become a popular name. Within the passage, Faith is the name of Goodman Brown s wife. In the beginning, Faith desperately begs Brown to stay at home instead of departing on the journey for the reason that Faith was timid and scared to death. However, as most men do, he does not listen and went on his expedition anyways; he left his dear Faith behind. By leaving his wife Faith, Brown also leaves behind his actual faith in God on his journey in to the forest (Stoehr 393). Therefore, in his short story Hawthorne symbolizes Brown s wife as his own faith. By leaving her, it demonstrates him leaving not only his wife, but his faith. Pink is an innocent hue of color, is it not? In addition to being a symbol within the passage, Goodman Brown s wife Faith wears pink ribbons in her hair. At first glance, pink is a ... • 31. Deadly and Destructive Hurricanes Deadly and destructive. These are two words that describe the horrible natural disaster we now call a hurricane. An average hurricane can cause thousands, millions, or billions of dollars in repairs! Scientists are always trying to warn people when a hurricane could be coming, but even scientists make mistakes so, just like other natural disasters, you should always be prepared if a hurricane does come your way. A hurricane can be very deadly if people are not prepared or on high land. A hurricane can be very deadly and destructive even if you are ready for the oncoming hurricane. Deadly and destructive. A hurricane is a huge, swirling storm with winds ranging from 74 MPH to over 155 MPH (Manolis 5, 10 11). The name hurricane comes from the name of the god of evil and wind (Gibbons 3, Woods and Woods 6). A hurricane starts when warm, evaporated water rises at the eye. This air spins upwards and sucks up more water and water vapor. If the temperature of the water gets up to or more than 81 degrees Fahrenheit, the winds get stronger, and cumulonimbus clouds are formed. The whole process keeps getting bigger and rain starts to fall. When the wind speed is up to 74 MPH, the storm is called a hurricane (Gibbons 4 5). Hurricanes are classified with the Saffir Simpson Hurricane Sale. This scale was created around 1970, when Herbert Saffir and Robert Simpson invented it so meteorologists could warn people about hurricanes (Gibbons 9). The hurricane scale has five ... • 32. Through Deaf Eyes Documentary Analysis While watching the PBS documentary called Through Deaf Eyes, the part that interested me the most was the deaf schools. Deaf Schools now range all around the United States. They are interesting to me because they are different than a public or private school you see everyday. They also interest me because I would like to know more about them than what the video talks about. The three topics that interested me the most about deaf schools was how they started, how today s deaf schools are, and what is different about deaf schools. The beginning of deaf schools is part of my interest in deaf schools. The first permanent school for deaf children in America was opened in Hartford, Connecticut in 1817. In the beginning he started out with only seven students and head teacher from France named Laurent Clerc. Laurent Clerc was also the one who brought French sign language. The school was later called American School for the Deaf or ASD. • 34. The Cholera Spread In London In The 19th Century The cholera has been the most terrifying disease spreading in London in the middle of nineteenth century, which is an infection caused by strains of the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. In the summertime of 1854 London was known as one of the most advanced and fashionable cities in the world with almost 2.5 million people living there. Because of the overpopulation, the city was having a difficult time to provide basic needs for the residents. According to Johnson (2006) the biggest existing problem within the city at that time was its lack of waste removal system. The human trash was piling up from the houses to the rivers and drinking water, which has led to the perfect conditions for a number of diseases and more precisely that is when the cholera... Johnson (2006) says, Many Soho residents who lived closer to other pumps one on Rupert Street and another on Little Marlborough opted to walk an extra few blocks for the refreshing taste of Broad Street`s water. It was colder than the water found at the rival pumps; it had a pleasant hint of carbonation (p.30). He also discovered that there was not a single death recorded among the workers at Lion Brewery on Broad Street. They were rarely seen to drink water from the pump because of the liquor they received as a part of their wages (Johnson, 2006, p.142). Another important observation Snow has made is about the death of the widow Susanna Eley who used to live in Broad Street, but after a while she moved to Hampstead (Johnson, 2006, p.143). By asking her sons Snow found out that she drank the Broad Street water as she loved it taste and even more, she had it delivered to the new house. After collecting all this information Snow had strong evidence that the source of the cholera outbreak was exactly the Broad Street pump. He came up with a plan how to deal with the cholera outbreak and went to the Board of St. James Parish where he convinced the local officials that the pump ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Psalm 23 Exegesis Analysis Psalm 23 Exegesis Psalm 23 is a realistic hopeful passage written by David about the presence of trials in his life versus the provision and relationship the Lord has for him. This Psalm is filled with metaphors and creative imagery that is best understood through contextual knowledge. Much of David s writing in this passage is about his struggles and trials, while the rest is essentially about the faithfulness of God. Psalm 23:1 says The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. . According to Schmoop.com, the word want means lack , meaning that David is saying he will not lack anything because the Lord is His shepherd ( The Lord is My Shepherd ). David says in Psalm 23:2 that the Lord makes him lie down in green pastures . However, in Israel there are no green pastures, in the more commonly associated definition. There are no pastures that are actually green in Israel therefore it is only an allusion to the metaphor of the Lord being David s shepherd. A shepherd will lead his flock of sheep to grassy pastures to eat. This reaffirms David s statement that he will not lack. Him referring to God as his shepherd and saying that he will make him to lay down in green pastures means that the Lord will have him lie down (rest) in places of provision /sustenance similar to a shepherd leading his sheep to sleep in a rich pasture (Know, That the World May, Green Pastures. ). David also says that God will lead him by still waters : another metaphor of rest. In Psalm 23:3, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Characteristics Of A Freshwater Lake Figure 1. The zones of a freshwater lake (Smith and Smith 2001). Within the lentic ecosystems, temperature plays a crucial role. Lake temperatures does not variate drastically, but does change gradually with every season of the year. Summer, the thermic stratification of lakes, can be studied in different layers (Figure 2). The superior level of a lake that is terminally stratified, is known to be epilimnion, which is the warmer part of the fresh water body. This water remains in the superior part because as the water gets warmer, the light of the sun becomes clearer than the dense water downward. The metalimnion is the known layer that would be ubicated beneath. This layer is defined by the thermocline where the temperature slightly decreases. In this phase, the temperature decreases 1 В°C for every single meter that descends. Hypolimnion would be the last stratified layer in a lake. This deep and cutoff from sources of air. (Korstad 2017) Another crucial component is the description of the characteristics of a lake is to monitor the quantity of oxygen and carbon dioxide to various depths. There is a reciprocal relation that exists between these two elements when they are compared to the depth of a lake (Figure 2) (Korstad 2017). A lake has the capacity top adhere oxygen by absorption or photosynthesis. In The Swimmer, Cheever uses symbolism as a tool to portray the theme of the short story. One symbol the author uses throughout the story is pools. The description of each pool shows the reader how Ned Merrill changes as a character. At the beginning of the story, the pools represent Merrill s youthfulness and energy. Zapotoczny, an author and historian, once said, Each of the great powers believed they had something to gain from war, fostering the national pride and the national positioning that made World War Iinevitable. This is true, as imperialism and militarism were a large part of national pride. Austria Hungary, for example, wanted Serbia. The German military was expanding rapidly. With each argument countries got into, hatred became stronger. Eventually, the European tensions snapped and everything toppled into terrible war. World War I was inevitable due to each of the great powers being imperialistic, militaristic, and prepared for war. During the early 1900 s, the European great powers believed they all had something to gain from expanding. Land in Africa was being claimed by countries such as France and Great Britain. A main goal for all the countries of Europe was growing. Austria and Hungary joined together into a dual monarchy in 1867. This country annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1908.
