2. ¡ India's booming ESDM sector is poised
to reach $228 billion by 2020 from $100
billion in 2016-17, growing at 16-23 per
cent annually
¡ The manufacturing of electronic
products is expected to increase in five
years at 17% annual growth, while the
electronic manufacturing services
segment is projected to grow 42-68%
over the next five years to $6-13.2 billion
from $1 billion in 2015
¡ With Rs 745-crore budgetary support
through schemes like M-SIPS and EDF,
India will be the next manufacturing
powerhouse
¡ Foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows
in India’s manufacturing sector grew by
82 percent year-on-year to US$ 16.13
billion during April-November 2016

3. 1. Several programs undertaken by Central and State Governement
boosting consumption of electronic products – Digital India, Smart
Cities, Meghraj, Ultra Mega Solar Power Projects, UIDAI project and
National knowledge network
2. The Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) has
been very active in formulating and announcing various policy
measures aimed at developing the ESDM industry in India
3. Projection of Rs 1,700-crore investments in the sector under the central
government's M-SIPS (Modified Special Incentive Package Scheme)
and EDF ( Electronic Development Fund), which are aimed at
increasing domestic production of electronics under “Make in India”
initiative

4. ¡ Apple plans to produce iPhone SE at an upcoming facility in Bengaluru, owned by
its partner Wistron, which has upgraded the plant to assemble Apple iPhones.
¡ Panasonic Cotp., the Japan-based electronics company, plans to set up a new
plant at Jhajjar, Haryana, to manufacture refrigerators for the Indian market, and
a Research and Development (R&D) center for appliances consisting of two
technical divisions to strengthen its product development in the country.
¡ BSH Home Appliances Group, the leading home appliances manufacturer in
Europe, inaugurated its first technology centre in India at Adugodi, Bengaluru,
which will enable the company to further develop localised technologies for the
Indian market
¡ China based LCD and touchscreen panel manufacturer, Holitech Technology, has
announced plans to investing up to US$ 1 billion in India by the end of 2017.
Chinese firms like Huawei, Lenovo Motorola, Xiaomi and Gionee and home-
grown brands such as Intex, Lava, Karbonn and Micromax have been assembling
products in the country.

5. The value of mobile phones assembled in India
has increased 373% in the last two years,
from Rs 19,000 crore in 2014-15 to more than
Rs. 90,000 crore in 2016-17. About 40 mobile
phone making plants have started since PN
Modi announced the Make in India in
September 2014.

7. ¡ Domestic demand is growing at a robust rate – 63% of the demand
was met via imports in 2015. Majority of handsets are imported from
China (79%) followed by Vietnam, Taiwan and Korea
¡ Shutdown of mobile handset plant in Chennai has led to zero
exports from India in 2015
¡ Make in India has provided thrust to domestic manufacturing –
Many global and Indian OEMs are setting up production units in
India
¡ Government (DeitY) has set up “Fast Track Task Force” to promote
domestic manufacturing
§ Aims to achieve production of 500milion handset (20-25% of total
manufacturing) by 2019 and create additional employment
opportunities for 1.5million people
§ To export from the currently 0 to 12million units by 2019
§ To establish a sizable component industry with a turnover of over $7.5
by 2019

8. ¡ Both Chinese manufactures and Indian players are starting
assembly units in India.
§ Asus, Lenovo and HTC have started contractor manufacturing
§ Xiaomi launched its first made in India smartphone in August 2015
§ New entrants such as Phicomm are also planning to produce in India
§ LG plans to locally manufacture smartphones once it captures 10%
market share and has allocated INR10billion toward R&D and
marketing
§ Foxconn is partnering with various global OEMs as a contract
manufacturers for handset companies
¡ Foxconn has signed $5B to setup R&D and hi-tech manufacturing
facilities in western India within next 5 years. It also plans to setup
its factories in 1500 acres allotted near Pune. Overall plan is to
setup 10-12 plants and employ a million workers by 2020
¡ Leading Indian OEM has setup a new plant in Hyderabad at an
investment of INR 4-5Billion

$9.48 Billion by 2020 from $3.73 Billion in 2015 at a CAGR of 20.5%

¡ IoT Healthcare Market worth 158.07 Billion USD by 2022
¡ The cost of healthcare is exploding. It is estimated that the cost of
treating diabetes patients will exceed $500 billion 20 years from
now (for U.S. and Europe as 1 in 3 might develop Diabetes). This
number is larger than the entire turnover of the entire
semiconductor industry today!
¡ The cost of treating heart diseases will be even more than triple
that. These numbers are really frightening and the problem is
tremendous.
¡ Today’s healthcare system is relatively inefficient. We need to
move from symptoms approach to more personalized, preventive,
predictive and participative healthcare system

19. ¡ 2018 – 2019: Self-driving cars let human drivers relax
behind the wheel
¡ 2019 – 2020: 5G connectivity becomes the norm, replacing
4G; traveling into space becomes a leisure activity;
eyewear comes equipped with tiny displays that project
into the wearer's retina
¡ 2026: Humans hand off household chores to domestic
robots
¡ 2030: Displays can be embedded into human skin and
powered by the blood
¡ 2034: Manned missions to Mars begin
¡ 2036 - 2037: Materials are transported from the surface of
the earth into space using an elevator-like structure
¡ 2037 - 2038: Anti-aging drugs make us all look young and
lovely forever
