October 2019
 The renewable energy market in India alone is estimated to be
at USD 17 billion and is expected to continue growing at 15%
annually
 The same applies to Indian agriculture. The agriculture and
grocery market is the sixth largest in the world with retail
contributing around 65 to 70% of the sales
 Global cleantech venture capital and private equity
investment in 2018 jumped 127% to $9.2 billion, the highest
since 2010. Global clean energy investment across asset
classes exceeded $300 billion for the fifth year in a row
▪ Cleantech investing’s comeback has been promising news,
but it still has a long way to go.The UN’s International Panel
on Climate Change recommended that $2.4 trillion of
investment is needed each year through 2035 to avoid
catastrophic damage from climate change caused by global
temperatures rising beyond 1.5°C from pre-industrial levels.
Growing means you are adding resources at
the same rate that you’re adding revenue
Scaling is about adding revenue at an
exponential rate while only adding resources
at an incremental rate
 Forecast and suggest best crop and schedule
 Personal water management
 Agri water management
 Framework for agri products similar to Amul model
 Plant health monitoring
Systematic scaling up requires a perspective that sees beyond the
traditional project approach. It explores from the outset and
throughout the project cycle the potential scaling-up pathways
that can ensure that a successful project is not a one-time event
but the stepping stone toward a wider and sustainable impact.
Scaling up expands, replicates, adapts, and sustains successful policies,
programs, or projects to reach a greater number of people. It is part of a
broader process of innovation and learning.
 Functional Scaling
▪ Expansion of services to more clients in a given geographical area
▪ Adding additional programmatic areas of engagement
 Horizontal Scaling
▪ Replicating from one geographical area to another
 Vertical Scaling
▪ Moving from a local or provincial engagement to a nationwide
engagement.
▪ This typically involves policy reform and institution building to help
achieve the policy and institutional conditions needed for successful
national scaling up
Perilous divide between R&D and commercialization is
known as the "valley of death".
 Understanding that not every innovation can or should be scaled up
▪ The risk of pilots not succeeding must be accepted as an integral part of the
innovation and learning process.
 Lack of primary research
 Choosing a wrong sample size and survey methodology
 IncompleteTesting and validating the idea
 Change in policy
 Lack of continuity in leadership
 Lack of effective evaluation
 Lack of concerted effort to support a systematic scaling-up agenda on the
ground
 Lack of constant tests on the assumptions about drivers and spaces while
scaleup and lack of randomization of evaluation metrics of scaling
impacts
DRIVERS
 Working Ideas and Models at small
scale
 Vision and leadership
 External catalysts – Political,
Economic pressures from outside
actors (Donors, NGOs)
 Incentives and accountability -
rewards, competitions, and political
pressure or community demand, peer
reviews, and independent evaluations
SPACES
 Fiscal/financial space
 Policy space
 Market space
 Institutional capacity space
 Political space

FarmBot | Open-Source CNC Farming
FarmBot is an open source precision agriculture CNC farming
project consisting of a Cartesian coordinate robot farming
machine, software and documentation including a farming data
repository. The project aims to "Create an open and accessible
technology aiding everyone to grow food and to grow food for
everyone."
1. Jivabhumi : This is a blockchain powered technology platform which enables customers to buy chemical-free
traceable farm produce directly from producers.
2. Pixuate : Startup Pixuate has intelligent process automation with artificial intelligence (AI) and cognitive
learning. It is using AI-powered sensor backed inspection and sorting system for multiple fruits and vegetables
3. RAAV Tech Labs : The startup focuses on quality analysis of everyday consumables using a combination of
biosensors and efficient data analytics.
4. LeanAgri : LeanAgri is working towards enhancing farmer incomes by increasing farm yields through systematic
implementation of scientific techniques including activity planning and decision making solutions
5. FFEM : Foundation for Environmental Monitoring provides inexpensive soil quality testing devices for farmers
that can be used along with smartphones. FFEM’s innovation helps farmers save time and energy by giving them
instant results
6. Krimanshi : The startup addresses problems such as underfed cattle, poor quality milk, farm waste among
others through an online a prediction platform. Further, it produces low-cost nutritious cattle feeds fortified by
up-cycled fruit and food wastes.
7. Bharat Rohan Airborne System: Bharat Rohan is a knowledge company which provides farmers in India with in-
depth understanding of their lands and the health of their crop based on the data gathered from Unmanned
AerialVehicles (or drones) which are equipped with specialised cameras and sensors
8. FarmstoFork Solutions (Cultyvate) : Smart irrigation and smart mobile advisory leading to better crop quality
and productivity and higher profitability are the unique selling points of the startup.
AGRITECH
15w/$1m funding
1. DataGlen: DataGlen has IoT based asset management solutions for solar plant owners and managers. The
technology gives access to real-time visibility, reducing losses and downtime, better operations, reporting, and
compliance
2. Revy Environmental Solutions: Revy treats effluent waste including petroleum, chemical, dyes etc. through
anaerobic process units and bio cultures. Led by award-winning scientist Dr Vanita Prasad, Revy Environmental
Solutions has manufactured “Granulated Sludge” comprising of carefully chosen microbes. This is more like a
“software update” of the existing yet redundant anaerobic bioreactors in the country. Unlike the existing
‘flocculant sludge’ or a colloidal mix of bacteria from cow dung and other sources, the solution is a breakthrough
innovation in the field of wastewater treatment, converting wastewater in cities and industries into liquid
fertiliser to produce electricity.
3. Synapptra: The integration of the human-centric environment, capital equipment, predictive intelligence, and
platforms into an easy-to-deploy SaaS system that enhances productivity while actively saving energy and
managing the spaces for lighting, heating, ventilation, cooling, and internal air quality is the aim of Synapptra
4. Fliprobotics: The startup is creating a novel waterless cleaning solution developed for solar PV panel cleaning
the system and designed to maximise the efficiency of a plant to its full potential.
5. The Solar Labs: The SolarLabs has an AI-powered software for solar system design, it reduces engineer time and
optimises system design for higher energy generation
6. OxraGrid: Co-founded by Akshat Kulkarni and Yash Kulkarni is leveraging IoT technologies for the power sector.
The idea of this startup is to install low-cost sensors along the distribution network, use real-time data and
software to identify these issues and predict when outages can take place, to fix them

1. Scaling before perfecting product-market fit
2. Choosing the wrong people to work with
3. Focusing on sales and marketing instead of building long-term demand
4. Competing on price
5. Creating Green fatigue
6. Navigating the political and regulatory landscape
7. Not changing management structures as growth occurs
8. Ignoring issues that pop up
9. Forgetting that trimming fat is part of scaling
10. Scaling Is Expensive. Focus on growing revenue while maintaining profit
11. Scaling Amplifies Everything - Just as it amplifies the good, scaling
amplifies the bad
 Focus on quality - Fixing returns/bugs is more costlier than adding new
features/products
 Be intimately familiar with scientific breakthroughs, emerging technologies,
and their commercial potential
 Let go and empower others to work for you
 Forecast to get visibility over your growing Empire
 Focus onTeam Productivity and Culture -They can Drastically AlterYour Scaling
 Move from a multi-functional team to specific department smoothly
 Develop a process without letting it slow you down
 Future proof with technology, supply chain and influencers
 Don’t become too large to adapt
 Remember growth/Scaleup can kill a company !
 With scale, as a leader, focus onTomorrow’s solutions and not today’s problems
 The Green Revolution dramatically raised the productivity of farmers in many
parts of the world
