What Plato Meant by the Form of the Good Essay
What Plato Meant by the Form of the Good The basis of Plato s philosophy is his theory of Ideas, or
doctrine of Forms while the notion of Forms is essential to Plato s philosophy, over years of
philosophical study, it has been difficult to understand what these Forms are supposed to be, and the
purpose of their existence. When examining Plato s forms and evaluating the theory, some conclusions
have proved to be unclear and unanswered. However, the doctrine of Forms is essential to Plato s
philosophy. Plato came to his view of the Forms based on two premises: first that knowledge cannot
come through the senses; and second, we do nevertheless manage to know things in mathematics, for
instance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The slaves know nothing of reality except the one of which they are presented as the Sun, which
represents the Form of the Good is outside the cave but the slaves have no idea of its existence. One
day a prisoner is released from his shackles and goes up to the upper part of the cave and sees the fire
and the objects, which are casting the shadows, and he also sees the sun and is blinded by this higher
form of reality. Plato believed that the way to find or realise true reality is not through gathering
empirical evidence or through deep scientific tests such as studying the shadows to determine what
they are. But rather that in order to break the chains we can only do so through inner contemplation or
philosophical investigation in order to ascend out of the cave and see the sun which gives light to all
the forms. For every sense object in the empirical world, there is a corresponding perfect Form. These
Forms are non physical, permanent, eternal, and invisible. How then, you may ask, can one ever know
of the Forms if they cannot be known by sense perception? Plato answers this question by stating that
the Forms are known in thought. They are the objects of thought, therefore, whenever you are
thinking, you are thinking of Forms. An important point to note about the Forms is the idea of
permanence as the Forms are forever unchanging. An

Essay On Excessive Use Of Force In Corrections
Sampling
The population for the study of excessive use of force will be of correctional officers with the most
use of force as well as correctional officers that don t have many uses of force. The proposed study
would be of use of force reports as well as any other maintained records of correctional officers within
the department. The use of forces reports to include records would be placed in categories to identify
the officers that used excessive force then from officers that did not use excessive force in situations.
These categories would require the sampling strategy method because the probability sampling
strategy is the method that would identify which officers that have the most documented use of force
compared to the officers that have the least documented use of force ( Use of force, 2017).
Information about probability sampling strategy would be a list of the correctional officers that have
the most documented use of force compared to the list of correctional officers that have the least
documented use of force. My selection would be a random sample because the population of
correctional officers that use excessive force is known from use of force ... Show more content on

However, there may also be risks in the research which would require careful planning so that no
inmate would be offended resulting in officer retaliation from this research. This planning mandates
that the steps that are identified as a probable risk (known observation) would be mitigated to reduce
that risk. Observing correctional officers use force as it happens could create potential risks that
include: the researchers could be put in harm s way by the onset or during the confrontation of either
the correctional officer or the inmate ( Hudson v. McMillian,

The Breakfast Club Analysis
Don t Skip Breakfast!
The Breakfast Club is a timeless movie centered around the very relevant concept of discovering your
identity and breaking away from stereotypes. It is about a group of 5 defiant high school students who
are all forced to spend their Saturday in detention. The five main characters include Claire (Molly
Ringwald) the princess, Brian (Anthony Michael Hall) the brain, Andrew (Emilio Estevez) the jock,
Allison (Ally Sheedy) the weirdo, and John Bender (Judd Nelson) the criminal. These students have
very different personalities and very little in common or so they think. The five are stuck together
under the oppressive authority of Richard Vernon (Paul Gleason) the Principal, who served as a
common enemy for the students. Their sole task for that Saturday was to write an essay describing
who they are, a question that remained pondered for the duration of the film as The Breakfast Club is
an iconic story of self discovery.
WHAT WORKED The Breakfast Club did an excellent job of capturing the strife of students as they
try and find themselves through their adolescent years. They have all been cast a different stereotype
and at the beginning of the movie it is clear that all of the characters have a fairly decent idea of who
they think everyone is. Every viewer can relate to at least one of the various stereotypes, and I think
your overall enjoyment of the movie will depend on how easily you can identify with one of the
characters. Their stereotypes are

The Elements Of Journalism By Bill Kovach And Tom Rosenstiel
In The Elements of Journalism by Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel, the authors stated that the primary
purpose of journalism is to provide citizens with the information they need to self govern. As a student
who regularly uses Google News, it is crucial to me that the journalist publishes the article in a way
that empowers the audience. Often, external influences affect the role of journalism in our society. The
line between journalism and propaganda is often muddled and groups of people are left behind.
Although it is sometimes lost, the journalism we see today is meant to be the metaphorical bridge that
makes sense of the masses of events and delivers it to the audience in a way that demonstrates clarity.
The audience needs guidance from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ground breaking news such as the shooting in Tunisia or the President conducting a deal with Iran
should be prioritized and be put in a place where the average citizen can immediately read about it. As
technology dominates our lives, shocking news generally reaches the public in a very fast manner,
mostly through social media. Journalists must be able to take what he/she thinks is the most important,
interpret it to make it understandable and put it out to the public. In my opinion, this principle is the
most important as the ability of the journalist to deliver easy to understand news is what will allow the
bridge to form. If this bridge is formed correctly, citizens will be better able to understand their
relationship to the event. In addition, news websites themselves must be able to accommodate the
needs of the society by putting important news at the front, and not allowing celebrity drama and more
unnecessary news to dominate their website. After all, it is extremely frustrating when the most
important news of the day is about The Kardashians latest shenanigans rather than how

Allure Of Democracy
The Allure of Democracy
A democratic system is one that states strive for, as it allows for popular participation through the
electoral process; and depending on implementation tactics, states may or may not be successful in
this pursuit. Democracy looks different across nations, as exemplified with presidential, parliamentary
and mixed systems being put in place. However, what is the allure of democracy? Herein, differences
in executive leadership and duties and differences in powers are addressed in order to better
understand what democracy is and why it is a sought after system of governance. Democracy is based
on two fundamental concepts. The first of which is political participation, which requires all citizens
eligible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are, however, often times more stable systems. Paradoxically, the executive branch, some would
argue, is not sovereign the citizen is. This is because the president, as well as legislators, have a
responsibility to uphold the wants of the people. This is often debated, though. A major player falling
under this system is the United States. In the U.S. presidential system, voting for both the legislative
branch and the presidential seat are voted on simultaneously (rather than a legislative branch being
voted in, who then vote in the president as seen in parliament elections), and only two political parties
stand out amongst the rest. There is no split government, and no such thing as a vote of confidence,
meaning it is much harder to remove a presidential figure (they must be impeached). Political parties
don t get to choose the president (they choose a candidate to run), and though the president seeks to
establish a cooperative relationship across parties it isn t essential to his/her stay in office (Dahl, n.d.)
(Moe Caldwell, 1994).

A commentary of the poem The Broken Tower by Hart Crane
A Broken Tower, by Hart Crane, is a metaphor rich poem that is very ambiguous but seems to describe
the difficulties of the creative process and the way in which the artist is bound and compelled by it.
Crane uses many religious metaphors and references, directly mentioning God and also bells, which
are associated with churches. It is possible to interpret the poem in a religious sense, but it could be
argued that religion and art are similar metaphors; that, for the poet, his writings are both a method of
spiritual expression and a search for truth. The title, A Broken Tower, refers to a continuing metaphor
in the poem and suggests the deconstruction of established paradigms which is necessary for artistic
progress. Throughout the poem, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is congruent with the need to destroy the tower, or destroy traditional ideas. Supporting the strong
visual imagery is the frequent mention of sound: the choir, voices, reveilles and echoes.
Imperfection is once again alluded to with the entry of the poet into the broken world in order to trace
the visionary company of love, its voice. This seems to directly refer to his creative process in seeking
truth and beauty in his writing. It is also the most positive concept expressed in the poem thus far a
wholly positive one, rather than the difficult process of destroying the obsolete mentioned before.
However, unlike the mighty tower, this voice is an instant in the wind and not for long in other words,
transitory. It is also mysterious and beyond the poets control, like the bells in the tower, as the poet
admits he know[s] not whither [it is] hurled.
Crane makes a more specific reference to his art; his word, as opposed to the Word of that tribunal
monarch of the air. The latter belongs to God, who is depicted as powerful and judgemental: the deity
of the Broken Tower. This could be seen as a personification of the judgemental ostracism that Crane
faced as a homosexual. The God metaphor is expanded on, with mention of Christs wounds pledged
once to hope, but also a rejection of it: cleft to despair. In this stanza, Crane offers his word a
replacement of the old Tower, symbolizing a

My Journey to the U.S.A.
If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine it is lethal (Paulo Coelho). I d always liked to travel
but not as much anymore. September 16, 2007 was the most chaotic day of my life. I was 12 years old
when we left Iran. Know let me tell you the events leading you to that day. My parents decide that we
should move to the United State so that way we would be closer to the rest of our family. Okay, now
to the day before chaos began.
Like any other day I woke up and did what most people do in the morning; get dressed and eat. Two of
my dad s friends had come over to help my dad take our luggage to the airport a day before so we didn
t have too much things with us. I remember we were all sitting in the living room and my younger
sister, 7 at the time that just gotten up and walked into the living room with her pajamas on. She had
gotten so scared when she say that we that company over. Her face was so red from embarrassment I
died laughing, I m a good sister, won t you say.
My dad left with his friends to go to the airport. My mom and sister and I went down stairs to our
neighbor s house. Pretty much the last few weeks, we ate eating delicious savory Armenian barbecue.
Since it was the last day we had barbecue with our neighbors. By lunch time my dad had already
gotten home from the airport. My sister, dad, and our neighbor s husband were down in the garage
making the food. The smell of Armenian barbecue is like the smell of pancakes in the

Spanish Conquest Of Mexico Research Paper
THE THREE MAIN ASPECTS TO THE CONQUEST OF MEXICO
The Spanish conquest of Mexico drastically influenced modern day Latin America. It generated a
mixture of race, a vast number of dialects, and religious syncretism with the Catholic faith. The
Conquest was more than just the subjugation of the Mexica people, it was the beginning of the
advancement in the Americas. The conquest involved three main aspects that were crucial to its
success. The rise of subdued indigenous people by the Mexica. The great devastation caused by
European disease to the natives. Lastly, the Spaniards cunning and military superiority. Without these
three aspects the conquest of Mexico might have gone a different direction.

and finally, the Catholic faith was greatly affected by it. All this was attainable due to the contribution
of indigenous people who rose up against the injustice of their Mexica rulers. The significant
weakening of the Mexica population due to Smallpox, which ravaged whole villages and left
casualties by the millions. Lastly, the clear Spanish military superiority whose aim was to eliminate
any opposition and ravage anything in their path. All of these aspects helped shaped the Latin America

The Life Of The World
The booked started off talking about how birthing worked in Laos. In Laos their home floors were
made of dirt. The mother would slightly deliver their baby making sure not to let the baby touch the
floor. The father would take the placenta and bury it. For a girl it would have been buried under the
parents bed and for a male it would be buried in an honorable place so he could watch over the
household. This was important to do because once they died they believed their spirit would return to
get this jacket and fight a long journey until they found their ancestors. Back in Laos they would rely
on the shaman if something went wrong during their pregnancy. The women would also watch that
they were eating, making sure to pay attention to their cravings. This was some of the thing they did to
prevent the malevolent spirit (dab). Once the baby is born they would have a ceremony to ensure the
baby keeps its soul. They believe you became ill due to a lost soul which was common in infants. To
avoid this they dressed the baby up, sacrificed two chickens and a pig, and the elders would tie strings
around the baby s wrist binding their soul to prevent sickness. At the age of three Lia had her first
seizure. Her older sister slammed the door and she began to seize. Her parents believed that the soul
was scared out of Lia and without her soul she had become ill. The doctor diagnosed Lia with epilepsy
and her parent diagnosed her with the spirit catches you and you fall down.

The Lowell Offering
In the article, The Lords and The Mill Girls the author Maury Klein, explains to us the rise and fall of
women working in the factory setting. In doing so he makes the argument that democracy is
incompatible with capitalism. Over time expectations about democracy can change and many times
greed is the driving factor. The author uses quotes from a variety of people, all of which corroborate
the idea the working conditions women faced in Lowell changed from being a positive model of a
work environment in a factory setting to a dismal work environment in less than 10 years. (check the
time range). Since the quotes were from a wide demographic of individuals, they are fairly reliable
because they represent more than one view about Lowell. Klein also discussed the Lowell Offering as
a source of information and its impact on the perception of the manufacturer to describe the standard
of living in Lowell. The women working in the factory contributed stories to the Lowell Offering. At
first, their writing showed that they were interested in bettering themselves by being willing to write

An example of one instance when women were working in factories was in WWI where many of the
men went to war. During WWI, women had the opportunity to work in factories making munitions for
the war. At first, it actually gave women the feeling of freedom and made the push for equality for
women to have the same rights as men move forward, although the push to have more women in the
workforce really started after the war ended. At that time, many of the women were sent back into the
home setting. This action of taking away women s freedom upset many hard working women who did
not want to leave the manufacturing work environment. Even today, equal rights for women in the
workforce is still a very heated topic for those who believe that women are still not treated

The Importance Of Sexism On Women
Sexism towards women is deeply rooted in history. Today s culture sees men as the dominant sex due
to biological differences between men and women. Constantly throughout time, men exploit and look
down on women. They were subjected to stay in the house and forbidden to explore activities and
careers that were not for women. With medical and technological advances, women started to stand up
for themselves and exit out of their traditional roles at home. Today, a tremendous amount of progress
has been made towards gender equality, but women still battle against sexist attitudes. This includes a
perpetuating rape culture that blames women for dressing in a way that is asking for it to women
making 77 cents on the dollar when compared to a man s salary. These are examples of sexism women
are subjected to and the authors in the articles Marked Women, Sexism in English, and A Woman s
Beauty, argue how women are marked based upon various aspects of their life whereas men are
unmarked and viewed in a holistic way.
Every action, every choice, every piece of a woman tells a story about her even if it is not her
intention. In the article Marked Women, Deborah Tannen sheds light on the idea that women are
inherently marked in everything they do. Clothes that a woman chooses to wear mark her so that a
judgement can be formed about her character. Wearing shorts too short or clothes too tight mark
women as promiscuous or asking for it. Loose clothing and sweatpants are marked

Costco Is An American Wholesale Corporation
Costco is an American wholesale corporation that operates based on the membership warehouse club,
while Target is a retailer corporation that specializes in discount merchandise. Even though both
Costco and Target have different target operation, they are the top two largest companies in the retailer
industry in the United States. In order to analyze and compare the financial health of these two
company, it is important to recognize these three key terms: liquidity, solvency, and profitability.
Liquidity is a financial term used to determine the ability of a company to pay off its short term debts,
which will be due within the next year or in an operating cycle. In another word, liquidity is a very
important indicator to evaluate a company s financial health. Liquidity ratio shows a comparison
between the most liquid assets and short term obligations of a company. A higher liquidity expresses
that the company has not only a better ability to pay off its short term debts but also a greater amount
of cash for an unexpected needs. In another word, when a company has a low liquidity, the company
may face a risk to pay its short term debt and struggle to fund its long term operation. The current ratio
is one of the most common and useful terms used to measure the liquidity of a company. It suggests
the capability of a company to pay back its liabilities with its assets. The current ratio is computed by
dividing current assets by current liabilities. According to a financial

Cathy Song The Youngest Daughter
Clarissa Reyna Mrs. M. Segovia English IV AP March 12, 2016 A Deeper Meaning The works of
poetry are often underappreciated and overlooked. The stories of plenty are being neglected in the
education of our youth. The work of Cathy Song, per say, personally has never come up prior to the
assigning of this paper. In Song s The Youngest Daughter , we are introduced to a variety of meanings
in which an analysis full of depth is required to clearly interpret and understand what it is that the
speaker is attempting to bring across through the use of clever diction. The poem in itself also contains
a compilation of carefully puzzle together literary techniques that are taught to be broken down to

When analyzing literature, it is very important to take it one puzzle piece at a time. Deconstructing a
work of literature can be difficult if the path isn t taken correctly and the work isn t completely broken
down for understanding. In Cathy Song s poem, the audience is able to understand the situation the
speaker is in due to the vivid images that Song provides. The imagery in the poem can be identified as
metaphorical (figure of speech in which a phrase is applied to something not literally applicable and
order to suggest a resemblance). The reader can also analyze the setting through the metonymy (the
use of the name of one thing for that of another thing) portrayed. Last but not least, the poem can be
deconstructed with the use of the symbolism (the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities) that
can be found when the poem is taken apart piece by piece. Now that we have a better understanding of
what it is that is going to be analyzed, let s begin to take a look at the poem through the eyes of a
deconstructionist. Cathy Song s The Youngest Daughter is clearly about a codependent relationship
between a mother and daughter, the mother s youngest daughter, to be specific. The poem is displayed
in the view of first person, for the daughter is the speaker. The poem is focused

George Eliot s Middlemarch
In George Eliot s Middlemarch, Will Ladislaw is introduced as Mr. Casaubon s young cousin. He is
seen in the gardens at Lowick Manor and described as a gentleman with a sketch book [...] and light
brown curls (49). Mr. Casaubon describes him as a young man who with a mercurial temperament,
general inclination to resist responsibility and an affinity towards grand artistic endeavors. Later in the
book, town gossip Mrs. Cadwallader refers to him as a dangerous little sprig [...] with his opera song
and his ready tongue. A sort of Byronic, amorous conspirator (237). In Middlemarch, Eliot weaves a

In his Preface, Wordsworth claims that the principle objective of his poetry was, to choose incidents
and situations from common life, and to relate or describe them, throughout, as far as was possible in a
selection of language really used by men, and, at the same time, to throw over them a certain coloring
of imagination, whereby ordinary things should be presented to the mind in an unusual aspect. (294)
The Victorian approach to knowledge which took on the form of large scale surveys, like Mr.
Casaubon s Key to All Mythologies, and factual explorations of absolute truths, like Dr. Lydgate s
practice of medicinal research. Unlike these grandiose projects, Wordsworth and Ladislaw stand for an
exploration of the world through human understanding. In explaining the nature of his work, Ladislaw
tells Dorothea that being a poet is having the kind of soul in which knowledge passes instantaneously
into feeling, and feeling flashes back as a new organ of knowledge (142). In stating this, Eliot is in
direct conversation with Wordsworth s claim regarding the objective of the Romantic poet. The
Romantics believed that the physical nature of objects was intrinsically attached to the effect they had
on the perceiver and the true pursuit of knowledge didn t discount either of these two aspects. There is

1. The Truman Show included multiple scenes of people reading newspaper headlines. The headlines
had secret meanings to them that an unknown viewer would not notice.
Crackdown on Homeless: This headline appeared the day after the presumed homeless man identified
himself as Truman s father. After he did this, random people took him away. The intent of the
newspaper was to convince Truman that the person he encountered was a homeless man and that
SeaHaven is trying to get the homeless out.
Travelers Beware: After Truman decided that he wanted to travel to Fiji, he went to a traveling agency

sign wanted to heighten Truman s fear of travel.

was so the viewer had complete satisfaction. They used reasonable angles such as store security
cameras, picture frames, and mechanical equipment. In contrast, the show used angles from inside
vending machines, pencil sharpeners, and buttons on other actor s clothing. When Christof and
Truman were in a shot together, Christof would always be bigger in one way or another, except for

The Theory Of Oedipus Complex
Introduction The term Oedipal complex was initially used by Sigmund Freud as he developed a theory
to explain the stages of psychosexual stages of development in an attempt to explain or describe the
boy child feelings of attraction to the mother and anger and envy towards the father (Fear, 2005).
Basically, the boy may feel like he is competing with the father for the belonging and possession of
the mother. The boy sees the father as a threat for her affections, desires and attentions. In terms of the
psychoanalytic theory, Oedipus complex may refer to the desire of a child to sexual engagement with
a parent of opposite sex, specifically the boy s amatory concentration, attention and attraction to the
mother. Freud argues that the complexity of Oedipus plays an imperative function in the stage of
Phallic where a kid undergoes psychosexual growth. Freud also trusts that if the stage completes
successfully and the child manages to involve himself or herself with a parent of opposite gender

The Current Unlimited Data Plans
Unlimited data plans undoubtedly encourage increased data usage and most likely challenge network
capacity, requiring higher investments by operators to avoid network congestion. The introduction of
data use pricing model will regulate this issue, and reduce network enhancements to match increasing
data usage, therefore reducing network expenses for KableCom. The current unlimited data plan
however convenient, for the customers, has a downside to KableCom. The increased use has been
brought about by customers watching music and movies, playing online games, participating in video
phone calls and otherwise performing activities using media tablets over the network. This has created
issues of KableCom potentially running out of bandwidth available for customers, resulting in outages
and delays.
Therefore, necessary for KableCom to implement data caps and migrate from unlimited data plans to
data use pricing model, however, many plans shall still have unlimited talk and texts. The network
should also be pulled down from 4G to 2G (Internet throttling) and limit downloads to 2GB per
month. One potential solution under consideration by KableCom is allowing content providers or app
developers to pay carriers so that their services do not count against a customer s monthly data limit
and essentially buying traffic for their content. However, the Internet is designed for all content and
services to be treated equally. Because this solution would give KableCom an unfair advantage over

The importance of making it to appointments
There are several reasons that making it to appointments on time is important. It effects not just the
clinic itself but also effects every other department that is connected with it and the hospital as a
whole. Being a Soldier I am supposed to lead by example and I can t lead if I can t even show up for
any of my appointments on time. The over all effect of this action is very negative all through out the
entire hospital. Clinics are very closely related to every other department in the hospital. Our mission
as medical workers is to take care of any and all patients and we can not do this if our staff is
constantly wasting appointment slots that the providers could be using for dependents or someone else
that could actually earn the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is poor team skills and I have then tarnished my reputation with my fellow coworkers. Which
then makes every day working a little harder because my coworkers then can not trust me that I can
get work done as they may need. Fourth of all, after causing the clinic and the pharmacy to lose
revenue, I then lose money for the hospital over all causing a flex in the budget and they then would
have to find other means of regaining what I have then caused them to lose which means longer work
hours for the military and possibly days off without pay for the civilians. That then causes more stress
to the already stressed out service members. Causing a shift in the schedule that they currently have.
Making them work more longer hours to try and get back the money that they have lost by working a
more stressful schedule like twelve hour shifts and so on and so fourth. This also causes me and every
one that has a family to then lose what precious time that we have with our families. As it is we hardly
get enough time with them and by me being irresponsible, I cause them to lose even more time then
they should have. This is unfair to everyone around me which is something that needed careful
consideration, but none of these effects have crossed my mind which is very irresponsible of me to
begin with. Not to mention, if the hospital was to lose too much revenue, it might have enough impact
to actually shut the hospital

The Most Influence Of My Family
Andre Gide used to say, It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not.
He was a famous novelist in 20 century, and he received Nobel Prize in Literature in 1947. His quote
inspired me when I was kid. I was born in a Viet Nam family. My family is like other Asians. Parents
are really strict with children, and children are afraid of their parents. I always followed on what my
parents said, and sometimes I forgot who I am or who I want to become. My parents are not only a
bad influence, but they teach hardworking on everything. I saw my parents working 12 hours a day to
feed me. As I see their pain, I don t want to give up. My culture and family are the most influence in
my identity. I am a persevering person, and I am not a person, who lives in the other s opinions.
When I was a kid, my parents taught me that, trying your best before you give up on anything, and I
used it on many challenges. I remembered when I was in the middle school, I loved math, but I was
really bad at it. My grade on math wasn t high although I try hard. In the spring of my eighth grade,
my school had the math contest for eighth grade students, and I decided to register. My school is not
too big, so only 112 students were on the contest. The contest is divided in three rounds, and about 50
students are eliminated in first and second round, and then only 10 students are in the final. At the
beginning, I came to the contest for fun, and I didn t prepare at all. I

Cognitive Neuroscience Personal Statement
Growing up I was always underestimated by the people around me. It wasn t until late highschool
until I started doing well in school, which is where my motivation to prove people wrong fueled my
efforts to succeed. College was when I started to take pride in my achievements. I started with a major
in Psychology, where courses like Cognition, Biopsychology and Cognitive Neuroscience really
caught my attention and fascinated me. Cognitive Neuroscience was one of my favorite courses
because we reviewed case studies of patients with neurological damage to see how brain mechanisms
underlying cognition were altered. I ll never forget learning about how damage to Broca s Area
impacted generation of articulate speech. I was so interested in learning about higher cognitive
processes such as pattern recognition, memory and consciousness. Classes like these led into picking
up an additional major in Cognitive Science, which has given me perspective on human perception,
thinking and learning. The diversity in criteria in the Cognitive Science program caused me to become
an extremely well rounded student, incorporating the studies of Philosophy, Psychology, Linguistics,

more students come into my review session relative to the previous one. I felt that I was the bridge
between the professor and her students, being able to tackle questions that students were confused
about by breaking down complex information and presenting examples to make topics more
understandable to my peers. I loved that throughout this process I was strengthening my own
understanding of the material. This was something that I found myself excelling in, and this

In A Heartbeat Symbolism
As a viewer of the short film, In a Heartbeat , I experienced through a generation of a never ending
swirl of feelings that at times left my heart completely shattered, while at others, sent my heart soaring
in contentment for characters I have bonded with over the duration of merely 4 minutes. I was able to
understand and appreciate the thoughtfulness of these accumulated feelings that encloses the matter of
universal love. Without the use of words means that anyone from any country would be able to
understand this, demonstrating universality. It was remarkably impressive how producers were able to
convey a bittersweet and touching tale that potentially could surpass the acceptance standard of
civilians; and to creating such a controversial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout the film, a very powerful message was communicated towards the audience which was
reflected off of symbolic traits. One form of symbolism that stood out was the personification of the
heart. The heart represents the intense emotions the main character feels; the desire to near the
supporting character. The message conveyed is that your emotions can neither be controlled nor
restrained, as they are stronger and will lead you to the yearned for person. It indicates that everything
happen for a reason, and that resisting against something which is bound to happen will only
convolute situations, as this is evidently shown in the film. Further exploration can be done when the
heart was physically broken. It represents loss, grief, misery and is showcased when each character
holds half of the heart with dejected expressions. Additionally, another symbolic representation is the
apple. In my opinion, the supporting character couldn t have been able to spin the apple that way, and
I believe producers have made it this way done this for a reason. It shows that regular actions or
physical appearances are sugarcoated when we see those we idolize. The character may realistically
not be exceptional to that particular standard, however, seeing through the eyes of someone who
admires, situations may become

Advantage And Disadvantages Of Cardanol
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES
Recently developed wide range of innovative monomers and prepolymers starting from cardanol, a
renewable and low cost industrial grade oil obtained by vacuum distillation of Cashew nut shell liquid
(CNSL), extracted from the Cashew nuts. CNSL is a byproduct of the cashew industry. The nut has a
shell of about 3.2 mm thickness inside which is a soft honeycomb structure containing a dark reddish
brown viscous liquid. It is called the CNSL, which is the pericarp fluid of the cashew nut.
In the search for the cost effective modern materials, CNSL and its products have a significant role to
play. Being renewable, it offers much advantage over synthetics. Recent research has shown that the

Lowering Tuition at Iowa State University Essays
Lowering Tuition at Iowa State University
The Background of the Costs of Tuition at Iowa State University
Iowa State University is a land grant school which, among other things, means that the university gets
money from the state of Iowa from the taxes that residents pay to the state. Because of this in state
residents who choose to go to the university do not have to pay a large amount of money while out of
state residents have to pay almost twice as much. Iowa State University does not have reciprocity,
meaning that even residents from the surrounding states, Minnesota, Illinois, etc., have to pay full out
of state tuition. Out of state residents have to pay about $9000 a year for tuition, while Iowa residents
pay only about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The students that come to Iowa State are not all Iowa residents. The out of state residents are the ones
who have to pay a great deal of money to attend the university. These students should not feel that
many of the doors to the kind of education they would like have been shut in their face because of the
amount of money it costs to attend many universities. To help solve many problems for out of state
students, their tuition for attending Iowa State University should be set around $5000. By setting it at
an amount that is only about $3000 less than the present out of state tuition it will make it much more
affordable for the students and the University will not lose money. Needs for Changing the Tuition at
ISU
The needs for the decrease in out of state tuition at the university can be seen in several areas, such as
the community diversity, availability of education to all, and the income based discrimination of
students. Iowa State university does not have a very diverse community. During the 1998 1999 school
year 78.8 percent of the total population at Iowa State University was of Iowa residency. Many of the
Iowa residents are from the surrounding area of Ames, IA, where Iowa State is located. Only 17.6
percent were non residents but United States citizens and the remaining 9.6 percent were international
students (ISU Fact book). The percentages were even lower in the incoming freshman class of that

Student Competency Essay
The years prior to kindergarten heavily impact one s future and their overall academic literacy. School
readiness, a multidimensional concept, possess the ability to convey advantages in academic success
in school. Children that prematurely attend school have shown more success in development of early
skills in math and reading. These individuals tend to show superior academic success, attain higher
levels of education, and have a higher chance of securing employment (1). One s ability to identify
letters, execute abstract and logical reasoning, and perform fine motor skills these factors support the
claim that early exposure to academic material increases the likeliness of competency. In recent years,
the number of young children attaining adequate literacy through early childhood exposure has
increased overwhelmingly. During the beginning years of a child s life, regarding socioeconomic
status, ethnicity, or religion, these factors determine a child s success in attaining academic
competency.
Children who live in poverty stricken countries tend to perform inferior to that of children in middle
class households. Over 71% of Euro American children performed at a higher grade level compared to
African American children. This gap of performance follows the affected child throughout their
educational career and may cause a deficit in the number of students graduating high school and
postsecondary educational institutions (4). Even if a poverty stricken child graduated, many

Forest Conservation
FOREST CONSERVATION
Forests are one of the most important natural resources that have been gifted to mankind for their
sustained existence on earth. Without question, they provide us with huge amounts of tangible and
intangible benefits, without which indeed, all life, less to say human life, would fall under the risk of
extinction. Hence, it is vital for us to realize this importance of forest cover, conserve them, and
ultimately work towards a sustainable way to maintain our forests and meet our needs at the same
time. In this paper, I have focused initially on the barbaric behavior of us human beings towards
forests, and how they have been and are still being massacred around the globe to meet our ever

CONSERVATION AND PRESERVATION: These two terms are often confused with one another, but
they refer to two slightly different concepts. Preservation of anything is basically keeping it in such
manner that it cannot or should not be touched or used. For instance, if a forest is being preserved it
means that it is to be kept untouched and nothing is to be extracted from it. It is to be left to its own
accord. On the other hand, conservation implies more towards a sustained use, or use in a sustainable
fashion. As in the example given above, if a forest is declared as conserved, it means that resources
may be extracted in a systematic and accounted way, so as not to compromise the forests ability to
replenish itself in terms of resources, and so that it may continue its intangible functions properly.
SUSTAINABILITY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: The term refers to the existence and
maintenance of a system, on its own accord, over a period of time, or that a system is able to stand and
function by itself for a certain duration. This term then leads on to sustainable development, which the
latest of concepts in development of a nation and its entities. Sustainable development means the
development targeted at making resources available both useful yet sustained, so as no to compromise
it for future generations.

The Education System Must Be Redesigned
During the first three decades of the twentieth century, the progressive era had catapulted curriculum
theory into a field of scientific inquiry. Its structure had been differentiated and the curriculum content
had been expanded. All changes were created to meet the demands of a newly industrialized and
urbanized civilization, and as a result scientific management became the guide for the development
and implementation of the new curriculum. Franklin Bobbitt, one of the 19th century front runners of
scientific curriculum, stated that if the scientific procedures utilized in factories could increase
productivity and efficiency, the same procedures could be used to improve curriculum (Flinders
Thornton, p. 8). Bobbitt believed that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dewey as a humanist, declared that education should be culturally relevant, student centered, and
prepare children to become active citizens for a changing society. Humanists believe that all children
have the ability to develop different levels of mental reasoning. Education should help them expand
the development of their reasoning power to become independent thinkers and productive beings who
could lead to the improvement of society as a whole. Despite all of these differences, Bobbitt and
Dewey both agreed that some subjects were unnecessary and subject matter must have educational
value and relevance to the student s life. The biggest difference between the theories was that Dewey
placed the focus of the curriculum on the child, while Bobbitt did not. John Dewey s curriculum
method allows children to develop a passion for learning and brings out their natural inquisitiveness.
He believed the child needed to be involved in constructing their own learning, which meant they had
the freedom to make inquiries and mistakes in the process of learning. Children s active participation
for acquiring knowledge was his philosophy and to be a critical being was his ultimate goal. Dewey s
student centered methods can still be seen in many of today s schools across the nation. Unfortunately,
because of education reforms, more schools have chosen to abandon student centered strategies,
instead teaching students testing

Innocence In The Fifth Child
I used The Innocent Youth to analyze The Very Old Man With Enormous Wings by Gabriel García
Márquez, The Fifth Child by Doris Lessing, and The Things They Carried By Tim O Brien. Using the
definition of innocent youth, a character inexperienced with many weaknesses who seeks safety with
others; others like him/her because of the trust he or she shows in other people. Usually, the
experience of coming of age comes in the later parts of the narratives provided to me. Also, using a
basic definition of innocent, lacking experience with the world and the bad things that happen in life .

From the beginning of Harriet s pregnancy she knew something was different. She was always in pain
and when she finally gave birth to the child, Ben, he was different. He was not a pretty baby. He did
not look like a baby at all. He even looked different and was also very strong. Has he grew up, he was
always getting into trouble. Some reasons why I believe Ben is innocent is his age. Especially, when
he was the age of an infant. Even though Harriet said he is different, we hope that she is crazy. No
baby is evil. Typically, kids that are young don t know how to act. So, his parents can t really be blame
him for his actions. Also, his parents don t know why he acts the way he does. Ben could have a
mental problem his parents are unaware of. However, some people would consider him not to be
innocent. Usually, when a child is born they don t effect the woman the way Ben did to Harriet. Then
when the child is born they aren t as strong as Ben. There is however another character that is
innocent. Amy, daughter of Sarah and William, is innocent because she has Down Syndrome. Down
Syndrome effects intellectual growth and makes it difficult for her to know what is right or wrong for
her age. Lessing main goal wasn t to add innocence in her book. Her goal was to take something that
everyone knows to be innocent and change it into something that s not. She did this by adding in
supernatural touches. She did however include Amy as innocent to compare her with

Summary Of Hiroshima John Hersey
On August 6, 1945, the U.S. dropped the first atomic bomb, killing a hundred thousand people in
Hiroshima, Japan. In the book Hiroshima John Hersey tells the stories of six atomic bomb survivors
from the exact moment to the years following.
Reverend Mr. Kiyoshi Tanimoto was a Methodist pastor that on the day of the bombing jumped
between two large rocks for protection. He escaped with minimal wounds and went on a search for his
family towards the center of the city. Mr. Tanimoto felt ashamed of being uninjured while others were
either trapped, burned, or dead. After finding his wife and baby, they went their separate ways and for
the next five days Mr. Tanimoto aided the wounded in the Asano Park. He helped bring water to them
and ferried others across the river. On August 26th, Mr. Tanimoto fell ill from radiation sickness and
spent a month in bed and another month resting in his father s house. He then returned to Hiroshima

The Limits Of Human Communication
From the beginning of human s existence on earth, communication has been a crucial aspect of human
life. Communication allows humans to express their ideas or feelings to others which gives humans
the ability to connect to each other at an interpersonal level. Technology is a product of human
communication through expression of ideas that has lead technology to be the rise of a new form of
communication. Technology is changing the way humans connect by moving towards more virtual
interactions between people rather than face to face. The essay Limits of Friendship written by Maria
Konnikova speaks on how technology takes away from human face to face connection, yet as
technology continues to innovate this essay will disprove her thesis. An essay Paumgarten wrote We
Are a Camera interrelates to disproving Konnikova s thesis by showing how POV camera s allow us
to connect our lives and express our idea s like never before. Myself growing up as technology
continues to innovate and change I too agree with Paumgarten s writings seeing how technology has
changed my own abilities to connect by expanding the possibilities to interact with other humans.
Technology has expanded the way people connect by providing limitless and easy accessible content
from across the earth. Technology changed the way humans connect by transforming it into a global
platform which nullifies geographical barriers. Konnikova acknowledges technologies global platform

Developing a learning tool to encourage education in a stem subject
Introduction
The aim for this project as has been mentioned is to develop a learning tool to encourage education in
a stem subject, I narrowed this down to developing a game that would help a student learn maths
specifically. Since then I have narrowed this further and have specified that this would be for around
the academic year 7 so around the age of 11 but would still be appropriate for 10 or 12 year olds. To
achieve this aim the objectives will be for one to train in game development as well doing research to
help establish the game mechanics or gamification elements wanted in the game.

Reading And Writing On Student Learning
I like that, although our course is about content area reading, it also covers writing, another important
literacy skill. I believe that reading and writing should go hand in hand. Reading can enhance writing
and vice versa. I understand that some teachers consider reading first before writing because of
interpreting reading as a tool to access knowledge and writing as a tool to demonstrate that
knowledge. However, to me, which skill should come first is not as important as the fact that without
one, the other cannot exist.
One writing strategy from this week s reading assignments that I believe will have a great impact on
student learning, even if they are struggling writers, is the six step report writing strategy. Graham,
Harris, MacArthur (2006) stated that the report writing strategy consists of the following steps:
1. Choose a topic.
2. Brainstorm all you know and would like to know about the topic.
3. Organize your ideas by main points and details on a web, where main ideas and subordinate ideas
are linked together through the use of lines and arrows.
4. Read to find new information and verify the accuracy of already generated material (add, delete,
and modify information on the web as necessary).
5. Write your report using information from the web you created, but continue planning as you write.
6. Check to be sure that you used everything you wanted from the web.
According to Graham, Harris, MacArthur (2006), the report writing strategy is taught using the

them to participate in sexual activates. It is not easy to prevent teenagers from engaging in sexual

Contraceptives serve a larger purpose than just to prevent pregnancy. Contraceptives can prevent STD
s and STI s. Contraceptives can also be used to balance hormones to treat things like acne or even to
lessen the effects of diseases such as endometriosis. Contraceptives allow for the act of safe sex and
can prevent many things that will affect the future generations. Although it is our moral obligation to
have sex for the sole purpose of procreation, our modern society changed the view of sex to an act of
pleasure. If sex is looked at as an act of pleasure, we must take the proper precautions in order to
ensure we are doing what is best for our future and our health. I agree that, sex should be between two
people who are responsible and mature enough to handle the consequences of the situation and that it
should be an act of love. However, procreation has been reformed in the modern world and people do

The conflict between the rational and the irrational is present in every person or situation. In Greek
tragedies, this conflict is constantly present within the characters actions and decisions. Usually, there
is always one character that will act rationally compared to the others and would try to fix the conflict.
Both The Eumenides and The Bacchae depict the conflict between the rational and the irrational, yet
the act and solution are presented differently. Whereas The Eumenides portrays it through killing the
family by committing matricide and homicide, The Bacchae portrays it through killing the family by

She also brings order and peace for the whole civilization when she calms the Furies and shows them
another way to think that would favor them; she brought peace, reason and order to the empire.
In The Bacchae, the most important characters are not only the gods but also the humans themselves.
Starting off with the story behind the problem, irrationality is demonstrated by the characters of Hera,
Semele and her family. Hera symbolizes irrationality through her emotions, violence and chaos. She is
jealous and revengeful of Zeus, who is unfaithful and had a child with another woman. She makes
Semele, the mistress of Zeus, desire Zeus in his true form, ultimately leading to her death because no
mortal could stand being exposed to so much power. Although Zeus is able to save their baby, this
violence and chaos causes Dionysus family to hate him. Semele symbolizes irrationality through her
emotions and disaster to the natural world. She may be lead by Hera to desire to see Zeus in his true
form, but she knew there were going to be consequences. She also symbolizes disaster to the natural
world by getting involved with the god of all gods and she brings chaos and hatred upon her family
towards her son through her desires. Semele s family also demonstrates irrationality by their discord
and emotions towards Dionysus. They malign their own daughter and reject Dionysus. When the story

A Virtual Call Center Via An Employment Agency
This paper will represent the breadth of concepts, and ideas that have been attained during this course,
in regards to transformational change within the organization of a virtual call center via an
employment agency. This course has provided valuable information that s critically important when
thinking about change, initiating change, and facilitating change. Along this path, it s just as important
to understand the mind sets of those that are involved in the change process. While understanding the
mind sets of all parties involved in the change process is important, being knowledgeable, having the
skills, and the capacity to overcome resistance and challenges when changes are presented are equally
important. The employment agency, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Any decisions to make changes are, to ensure the company s success, the employment agency s
success, and the satisfaction of the employees and consumers. Such changes are derived from planned
or unplanned change processes. The focus of transformational change in this literature will surround
the employment agency in correlation with the company. Because the agency has proven success in
providing superb technical support to their customers, the company decided to offer other
opportunities to expand their current lines of business. The opportunities exceeded the original plan of
introducing, computer support for desktops and laptops, and now included the chat support. Both of
these new lines of business are already in place with the company, but have tend to become
overwhelming with the call volume, so the agency has transformed and adopted the 2 new lines of
business.
However, before any focus can be applied to change, a solid foundation is required for an opportunity
for a successful transformational. A solid foundation is determined by honoring the past, which means
moving from the Industrial Age paradigm (past), into the Knowledge Age paradigm (future).
According to Duffy (2010), his definition of the Industrial Age involved overcoming the challenge of
educating millions of new immigrant children, by creating factory size school systems to deliver the

Mademoiselle Reisz Analysis
The Influences of the Mademoiselle Reiz on the development of Edna Pontellier: Edna is the
protagonist of The Awakening by Kate Chopin. She is the wife of a New Orleans businessman. She is
not content with her marriage and the lifestyle that she must conform to. She changes from her role as
a devoted wife and mother to a woman who becomes engrossed in discovering her own identity. She
then goes through a series of experiences to satisfy herself mentally, emotionally, and sexually. She
changes from the woman of those times, who always stuck to conformity, to someone who worries
and is only responsible for herself. It is Mademoiselle who influences her to become awakened in such
a way. However this very awakening will be her downfall. She will then begin to isolate herself from
those around her and eventually choose suicide as an escape. A main factor towards the development
of Edna would be Mademoiselle Reiz. Her influence plays a vital role towards her awakening and
change to her life style. From the moment she heard Reiz play she had begun to be influenced. The
very first chords Mademoiselle Reisz struck on the piano sent a keen tremor down Mrs. Pontellier s
spinal column. It was not the first time she had heard an artist at the piano. Perhaps it was the first
time she was ready, perhaps the first time her being was tempered to take an impress of the abiding
truth. (Chopin 29) . It can be said that the change in Edna was sparked by this very moment. From

Why Does Rosalind s Use Of Disguise
Role playing in Shakespeare s As You Like It and Measure for Measure is an important aspect that
extends from actors playing a character to that character playing another character as the same initial
character being played. Rosalind, in As You Like It, is a heroin that disguises herself as the male
Ganymede. Duke Vincentio disguises himself as Friar Peter in Measure for Measure. The use of these
main characters in disguise drives the plot forward in ways that keep the audience entranced and
engaged in the element of disguise. Rosalind and Duke Vincentio, in disguise, create suspense when
they are nearly discovered by the wit of other characters or by being foolish and abusing their
disguise. In each play, their main use of disguise is to test ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lucio is the character that came the closest to knowing that the Friar was the Duke in disguise but the
text never tells if he really knew or not. Lucio provoked the Duke without mercy. In act 3, scene 1,
Lucio continuously insults the Duke while in conversation with him. He says that the Duke has used
vices such as prostitutes and drink. He claims that he knows and loves and is well known to the Duke
(3.1.387). All the while, the Duke remains in disguise as the Friar but he does become angry and
frustrated with Lucio s false words. Because he is unable to act how he would if he were in his ruling
position, he threatens to report Lucio to the Duke for saying these slanderous things (3.1.397). In the
final act, it is Lucio who discovers that the friar is the Duke by unveiling him. Whether Lucio is
surprised by this discovery is unknown and left, again, to the interpretation of the director. In these
moments when Rosalind s and the Duke s ability to stay in disguise were being tested, they both felt
trapped in their disguise due to their inability to show their true emotions towards their

What Plato Meant by the Form of the Good Essay What Plato Meant by the Form of the Good The basis of Plato s philosophy is his theory of Ideas, or doctrine of Forms while the notion of Forms is essential to Plato s philosophy, over years of philosophical study, it has been difficult to understand what these Forms are supposed to be, and the purpose of their existence. When examining Plato s forms and evaluating the theory, some conclusions have proved to be unclear and unanswered. However, the doctrine of Forms is essential to Plato s philosophy. Plato came to his view of the Forms based on two premises: first that knowledge cannot come through the senses; and second, we do nevertheless manage to know things in mathematics, for instance. ... The slaves know nothing of reality except the one of which they are presented as the Sun, which represents the Form of the Good is outside the cave but the slaves have no idea of its existence. One day a prisoner is released from his shackles and goes up to the upper part of the cave and sees the fire and the objects, which are casting the shadows, and he also sees the sun and is blinded by this higher form of reality. Plato believed that the way to find or realise true reality is not through gathering empirical evidence or through deep scientific tests such as studying the shadows to determine what they are. But rather that in order to break the chains we can only do so through inner contemplation or philosophical investigation in order to ascend out of the cave and see the sun which gives light to all the forms. For every sense object in the empirical world, there is a corresponding perfect Form. These Forms are non physical, permanent, eternal, and invisible. How then, you may ask, can one ever know of the Forms if they cannot be known by sense perception? Plato answers this question by stating that the Forms are known in thought. They are the objects of thought, therefore, whenever you are thinking, you are thinking of Forms. An important point to note about the Forms is the idea of permanence as the Forms are forever unchanging. An ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Breakfast Club Analysis Don t Skip Breakfast! The Breakfast Club is a timeless movie centered around the very relevant concept of discovering your identity and breaking away from stereotypes. It is about a group of 5 defiant high school students who are all forced to spend their Saturday in detention. The five main characters include Claire (Molly Ringwald) the princess, Brian (Anthony Michael Hall) the brain, Andrew (Emilio Estevez) the jock, Allison (Ally Sheedy) the weirdo, and John Bender (Judd Nelson) the criminal. These students have very different personalities and very little in common or so they think. The five are stuck together under the oppressive authority of Richard Vernon (Paul Gleason) the Principal, who served as a common enemy for the students. Their sole task for that Saturday was to write an essay describing who they are, a question that remained pondered for the duration of the film as The Breakfast Club is an iconic story of self discovery. WHAT WORKED The Breakfast Club did an excellent job of capturing the strife of students as they try and find themselves through their adolescent years. They have all been cast a different stereotype and at the beginning of the movie it is clear that all of the characters have a fairly decent idea of who they think everyone is. Every viewer can relate to at least one of the various stereotypes, and I think your overall enjoyment of the movie will depend on how easily you can identify with one of the characters. Often, external influences affect the role of journalism in our society. The line between journalism and propaganda is often muddled and groups of people are left behind. Journalists must be able to take what he/she thinks is the most important, interpret it to make it understandable and put it out to the public. In my opinion, this principle is the most important as the ability of the journalist to deliver easy to understand news is what will allow the bridge to form. If this bridge is formed correctly, citizens will be better able to understand their relationship to the event. In addition, news websites themselves must be able to accommodate the needs of the society by putting important news at the front, and not allowing celebrity drama and more unnecessary news to dominate their website. This is because the president, as well as legislators, have a responsibility to uphold the wants of the people. This is often debated, though. A major player falling under this system is the United States. In the U.S. presidential system, voting for both the legislative branch and the presidential seat are voted on simultaneously (rather than a legislative branch being voted in, who then vote in the president as seen in parliament elections), and only two political parties stand out amongst the rest. There is no split government, and no such thing as a vote of confidence, meaning it is much harder to remove a presidential figure (they must be impeached). • 8. A commentary of the poem The Broken Tower by Hart Crane A Broken Tower, by Hart Crane, is a metaphor rich poem that is very ambiguous but seems to describe the difficulties of the creative process and the way in which the artist is bound and compelled by it. Crane uses many religious metaphors and references, directly mentioning God and also bells, which are associated with churches. It is possible to interpret the poem in a religious sense, but it could be argued that religion and art are similar metaphors; that, for the poet, his writings are both a method of spiritual expression and a search for truth. The title, A Broken Tower, refers to a continuing metaphor in the poem and suggests the deconstruction of established paradigms which is necessary for artistic progress. Throughout the poem, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is congruent with the need to destroy the tower, or destroy traditional ideas. Supporting the strong visual imagery is the frequent mention of sound: the choir, voices, reveilles and echoes. Imperfection is once again alluded to with the entry of the poet into the broken world in order to trace the visionary company of love, its voice. This seems to directly refer to his creative process in seeking truth and beauty in his writing. It is also the most positive concept expressed in the poem thus far a wholly positive one, rather than the difficult process of destroying the obsolete mentioned before. However, unlike the mighty tower, this voice is an instant in the wind and not for long in other words, transitory. It is also mysterious and beyond the poets control, like the bells in the tower, as the poet admits he know[s] not whither [it is] hurled. Crane makes a more specific reference to his art; his word, as opposed to the Word of that tribunal monarch of the air. The latter belongs to God, who is depicted as powerful and judgemental: the deity of the Broken Tower. This could be seen as a personification of the judgemental ostracism that Crane faced as a homosexual. The God metaphor is expanded on, with mention of Christs wounds pledged once to hope, but also a rejection of it: cleft to despair. Constantly throughout time, men exploit and look down on women. They were subjected to stay in the house and forbidden to explore activities and careers that were not for women. With medical and technological advances, women started to stand up for themselves and exit out of their traditional roles at home. Today, a tremendous amount of progress has been made towards gender equality, but women still battle against sexist attitudes. This includes a perpetuating rape culture that blames women for dressing in a way that is asking for it to women making 77 cents on the dollar when compared to a man s salary. These are examples of sexism women are subjected to and the authors in the articles Marked Women, Sexism in English, and A Woman s Beauty, argue how women are marked based upon various aspects of their life whereas men are unmarked and viewed in a holistic way. Every action, every choice, every piece of a woman tells a story about her even if it is not her intention. In the article Marked Women, Deborah Tannen sheds light on the idea that women are inherently marked in everything they do. • 21. The Theory Of Oedipus Complex Introduction The term Oedipal complex was initially used by Sigmund Freud as he developed a theory to explain the stages of psychosexual stages of development in an attempt to explain or describe the boy child feelings of attraction to the mother and anger and envy towards the father (Fear, 2005). Basically, the boy may feel like he is competing with the father for the belonging and possession of the mother. The boy sees the father as a threat for her affections, desires and attentions. In terms of the psychoanalytic theory, Oedipus complex may refer to the desire of a child to sexual engagement with a parent of opposite sex, specifically the boy s amatory concentration, attention and attraction to the mother. Freud argues that the complexity of Oedipus plays an imperative function in the stage of Phallic where a kid undergoes psychosexual growth. Freud also trusts that if the stage completes successfully and the child manages to involve himself or herself with a parent of opposite gender ultimately, this involvement leads to the development of a sexual identity that is mature. As this theory explains, the boy child admires to seize or possess the mother fully and if possible out do the father, who this child always sees as a great enemy of the mother s love. It effects not just the clinic itself but also effects every other department that is connected with it and the hospital as a whole. Being a Soldier I am supposed to lead by example and I can t lead if I can t even show up for any of my appointments on time. The over all effect of this action is very negative all through out the entire hospital. Clinics are very closely related to every other department in the hospital. Which then makes every day working a little harder because my coworkers then can not trust me that I can get work done as they may need. That then causes more stress to the already stressed out service members. Causing a shift in the schedule that they currently have. Making them work more longer hours to try and get back the money that they have lost by working a more stressful schedule like twelve hour shifts and so on and so fourth. This also causes me and every one that has a family to then lose what precious time that we have with our families. As it is we hardly get enough time with them and by me being irresponsible, I cause them to lose even more time then they should have. He was a famous novelist in 20 century, and he received Nobel Prize in Literature in 1947. His quote inspired me when I was kid. I was born in a Viet Nam family. My family is like other Asians. Parents are really strict with children, and children are afraid of their parents. I always followed on what my parents said, and sometimes I forgot who I am or who I want to become. My parents are not only a bad influence, but they teach hardworking on everything. I saw my parents working 12 hours a day to feed me. As I see their pain, I don t want to give up. My culture and family are the most influence in my identity. I am a persevering person, and I am not a person, who lives in the other s opinions. When I was a kid, my parents taught me that, trying your best before you give up on anything, and I used it on many challenges. I remembered when I was in the middle school, I loved math, but I was really bad at it. My grade on math wasn t high although I try hard. In the spring of my eighth grade, my school had the math contest for eighth grade students, and I decided to register. My school is not too big, so only 112 students were on the contest. One form of symbolism that stood out was the personification of the heart. The heart represents the intense emotions the main character feels; the desire to near the supporting character. The message conveyed is that your emotions can neither be controlled nor restrained, as they are stronger and will lead you to the yearned for person. It indicates that everything happen for a reason, and that resisting against something which is bound to happen will only convolute situations, as this is evidently shown in the film. Additionally, another symbolic representation is the apple. In my opinion, the supporting character couldn t have been able to spin the apple that way, and I believe producers have made it this way done this for a reason. Preservation of anything is basically keeping it in such manner that it cannot or should not be touched or used. For instance, if a forest is being preserved it means that it is to be kept untouched and nothing is to be extracted from it. It is to be left to its own accord. On the other hand, conservation implies more towards a sustained use, or use in a sustainable fashion. As in the example given above, if a forest is declared as conserved, it means that resources may be extracted in a systematic and accounted way, so as not to compromise the forests ability to replenish itself in terms of resources, and so that it may continue its intangible functions properly. Dewey as a humanist, declared that education should be culturally relevant, student centered, and prepare children to become active citizens for a changing society. Humanists believe that all children have the ability to develop different levels of mental reasoning. Education should help them expand the development of their reasoning power to become independent thinkers and productive beings who could lead to the improvement of society as a whole. Despite all of these differences, Bobbitt and Dewey both agreed that some subjects were unnecessary and subject matter must have educational value and relevance to the student s life. The biggest difference between the theories was that Dewey placed the focus of the curriculum on the child, while Bobbitt did not. John Dewey s curriculum method allows children to develop a passion for learning and brings out their natural inquisitiveness. He believed the child needed to be involved in constructing their own learning, which meant they had the freedom to make inquiries and mistakes in the process of learning. Children s active participation for acquiring knowledge was his philosophy and to be a critical being was his ultimate goal. I believe that reading and writing should go hand in hand. Reading can enhance writing and vice versa. I understand that some teachers consider reading first before writing because of interpreting reading as a tool to access knowledge and writing as a tool to demonstrate that knowledge. However, to me, which skill should come first is not as important as the fact that without one, the other cannot exist. One writing strategy from this week s reading assignments that I believe will have a great impact on student learning, even if they are struggling writers, is the six step report writing strategy. Graham, Harris, MacArthur (2006) stated that the report writing strategy consists of the following steps: 1. Choose a topic. 2. Brainstorm all you know and would like to know about the topic. 3. Organize your ideas by main points and details on a web, where main ideas and subordinate ideas are linked together through the use of lines and arrows. 4. Read to find new information and verify the accuracy of already generated material (add, delete, and modify information on the web as necessary). 5. Write your report using information from the web you created, but continue planning as you write. 6. Check to be sure that you used everything you wanted from the web. He claims that he knows and loves and is well known to the Duke (3.1.387). All the while, the Duke remains in disguise as the Friar but he does become angry and frustrated with Lucio s false words. Because he is unable to act how he would if he were in his ruling position, he threatens to report Lucio to the Duke for saying these slanderous things (3.1.397). In the final act, it is Lucio who discovers that the friar is the Duke by unveiling him. Whether Lucio is surprised by this discovery is unknown and left, again, to the interpretation of the director. In these moments when Rosalind s and the Duke s ability to stay in disguise were being tested, they both felt trapped in their disguise due to their inability to show their true emotions towards their ...
