My Trip To Mackinaw Island-Personal Narrative
It was last summer around July when my family and I woke up around 7:00 A.M to drive to
Mackinaw Island. Preparing for this trip was extremely hectic because we had to pack all of our
clothes and food that we wanted for the car ride. We were all in the car around 7:45 with all of our
things packed. We locked all the doors up and turn all the lights off. The drive took us about 4 hours to
get to St. Ignace. My sisters and I watched a movie during the car ride, read and did homework so that
we were occupied during the long car ride. My favorite part when we were driving was probably when
we went across the Mackinaw Bridge because, it felt like our car was driving on the bright blue lake
which was cool. My mom was frightened to look out the window ... Show more content on

My older sister Peyton did not want to go on the zipline because she had already done it before when
she went to 6th grade camp. My Dad went up desk and paid for two tickets, one for me and one for
my sister Lauryn. First we had to step through a harness and buckle it around our waste. Next, we had
to put on a red helmet that had the company s logo and a strap to put around our neck. Once all of our
safety gear was on we moved to the tall platform. I could hear my heart starting to pound out of my
chest. I was beginning to have second thoughts. I could feel my hair blowing in the wind. It was time
for me to go. The man pushed me off the platform. Suddenly my feet were dangling in mid air. I felt
like I was flying in the sky. Beneath us were people playing mini golf. I was wondering what would
happen if I fell down, but I realized that I was going to be safe and that it would be unrealistic. Once
we reached the end of the zip line we had to walk all the way back to where we started. We went on
the zipline again because my parents got the tickets where you got to go two times. After that, we
thanked our parent because we knew that this was something that we were going to remember. My
sister Peyton also regretted not going on the ride because she saw how much fun we really had. This is
a time where my sister and I had the courage to do something that most people don t get a chance to

Levi Strauss
Levi Strauss at Home and Abroad As one attempts to assess the business ethics of Levi Strauss and
Nike in this writing assignment, we are again compelled to revisit the critical distinction of conduct
that is legal, yet still unethical. In both instances, Levi Strauss and Nike behaved with the parameters
of legal conduct, yet few would argue that profiting from exploitive work conditions is an ethical
behavior of any socially responsible organization (broad view social responsibility). Obviously, it s
very tempting to just condense this argument to the point of bad companies boosting profits from
lower labor costs via exploiting foreign workers in sweatshops . I am going to take a much broader
approach here in my assessment, as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The end result of this ruling is that corporations that profit greatly from outsourced labor are now able
to pay for the elections of our Congressmen and gee, wonder how this economic favor will be repaid
when attempts to rein in outsourcing come up in Congress? Let s move on to our two protagonists in
this debate: Levi Strauss and Nike. Now that we ve got the backdrop well in hand, and a reasonable
person would agree that a massive systemic failure in the U.S. has allowed and promoted unchecked
outsourcing of jobs, it s time to discuss these two corporate giants and their respective behaviors here.
Do these two corporations have a responsibility to monitor the conduct of the companies they do
business with in particular, their contractors and suppliers? As a personal believer in the broader view
of corporate social responsibility, I believe that they do. Notwithstanding the fact that all of this
outsourcing is legal, and despite the mitigating factors that I ve argued above that do alleviate these
two companies of all of the blame I still believe that they need to take the higher moral ground. Levi
Strauss overall has conducted itself with far greater corporate social responsibility than Nike has, in
my judgment. Strauss for many years withdrew from China due to their notoriety as a non democratic
country with abusive labor conditions.

Leadership And The Psychodynamic Approach
In my opinion, even though it was assumed that some people are naturally born leaders, it was also
argued that certain leadership traits can be developed through experiences. With reference to the
leadership trait questionnaire that I have done previously, one of my stronger character trait that was
reflected was empathy. Cross referencing this to the Psychodynamic approach, under the Myers
Briggs personality test, I found myself to be an INFP Introversion, intuition, feeling, perception. The
main core trait associated with those who are classified as an INFP was coincidentally empathy as
well where those under that category aim to seek harmony and authenticity in our relationship with
others. (Northouse, 2013) That is something I have to agree with as I constantly find myself trying to

contribution made by participants which gives them the opportunity to freely voice out their opinions
and views and this in turn allows me build a positive rapport with them and understand their way of
thinking. In the context of the LPC measure, I would see myself as a more people oriented leader as I

Cultural Values In The Odyssey
Thousands of peoples of thousands of cultures exist today. Each existing culture possesses customs
valuable to its people. One method of discovering the importance of certain customs to cultures is to
examine their literature. For example, Homer conveys many significant Greek customs throughout the
novel, The Odyssey. In his novel, he explains the importance of hospitality to the Greeks through the
actions of Circe, the goddess, when she takes care of Odysseus s men, and Maron when he provides a
gift of gratitude to Odysseus. A need for order and justification also exemplifies another important
custom of the Greeks.Author Homer utilizes examples of Odysseus s murdering of the suitors who
take over his home and Poseidon s punishment to Odysseus for hurting his son to convey the
importance of the importance of justice to the Greeks . Homer explains this importance through a
cause and effect punishment system from disobeying the gods orders. Piety models another cultural
value of the Greeks through Homer s book, which he explains through details of Odysseus sacrifices,
man s prayers to the gods, and mans humility to the gods power. Through the hospitality of Circe and
Polyphemus, the need for order and justification in obeying the gods, and piety for the gods orders,
Homer reflects important customs to the Greeks in The Odyssey.
To commence, Homer conveys the importance of Greek hospitality through a goddess, Circe, and a
giant Cyclops, Polyphemus. Looking at Circe s

As I Lay Dying By William Faulkner
As I Lay Dying
William Faulkner
Entry 1
Beginning As I Lay Dying, I am already struggling with the dialect of the novel. This confusion is
deepened because I had no prior knowledge of the characters and plot. There are many characters that
Faulkner mentions in the first twenty five pages of the novels and so I was trying to connect the
characters and find out who was who. Faulkner also constantly refers to Addie as she . This confused
me at first because I didn t know who Faulkner was referring to and how Addie was related to all of
the other characters. I found that as long as I read very slowly and pay attention to detail, I can
understand the language of the story better than I expected. I was able to connect all the characters and
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is making the characters unrelatable so I hope that I improve on understanding the dialect of the
novel.
Entry 3
I find that I am having trouble reading some characters narrations more than others. Cash s narrations
are the simplest to read as his thoughts are fairly straightforward to follow and his narration doesn t
move from one idea to another. Vardaman, Dewey Dell and Darl all have narrations that are difficult
to follow because their thoughts move rapidly from one idea to another. Vardaman is a child and his
narration is the most difficult to understand because of the childish manner it is written in. Dewey Dell
also expresses very complicated thoughts. Dewey Dell begins her narration using only he to identify
who she is thinking about. She also continually refers to herself and him as a tub of guts. Darl is very
thoughtful and his thoughts move from one topic to something completely different and so I find his
narration very difficult to follow.
Entry 4
There have been many examples of animal symbolism in As I Lay Dying. I didn t understand what
Vardaman meant when he first says my mother is a fish (76) and later when Darl says Jewel s mother
is a horse (86). I went back in the novel and read about that the fish Vardaman caught was chopped to
pieces and no longer recognizable. When Vardaman says his mother is a fish, Vardaman is saying that
his mother is no longer recognizable to him

The Popularity of Gangster Films in the Early...
The Popularity of Gangster Films in the Early Nineteen Thirties The late 1920s in America was a
particularly tumultuous period of time for the country. The Wall Street Crash in 1929 had led to high
levels of unemployment and dissatisfaction within the country. The Depression (1929 1934), which
was a direct result of The Wall Street Crash, led to a breakdown of industry and commerce within the
country and weakened its global position as a superpower. People began to realise that the ideal which
had been frequently promoted by governmental propaganda of The American Dream which suggested
that success, in the democratic and classless society guaranteed by the ... Show more content on

During this period the rise of urban gang rule and mobsters was unprecedented, mainly emerging from
minority immigrant groups (Jewish/Italian/Irish). Initially the gangsters of the period were seen as
high achievers as they were associated with the proletariat and seemed to be capable of rising above
there roots, even during hard times in America, and achieve wealth. When considering the socio
economic factors it is easy to understand why such men were considered as gangster heroes [3] who
represented the people, however the only way that gangsters could achieve this wealth, subsequently
fulfilling the American Dream, was by stealing it. Accruing capital meant accruing power over others
[4]. Therefore it could be argued that the success gangsters exemplified was a perverse form of the
American dream as it disregarded some of the key elements of the ideal. The fact that at this stage in
America gangsters were the only group within society who could make upward mobility believable,
tells much about how legitimate institutions had failed but that mobility was still at the core of what
Americans held to be the American dream [5].
In the early 1930 s productions began within Hollywood of what were commonly described as social
problem pictures [6], these films dealt specifically with the social difficulties of the period such as
unemployment/labour struggles ( Black

Control Charts Essay
1 Introduction
A control chart was invented in the early of 1920 s by Walter A. Shewart in the Bell Telephone
Laboratories. In 1928 he was introduced the first Statistical Process Control Charts in the Bell
Laboratories to improve the quality of telephones manufactured, he was developed a simple graphical
method for the growing range of statistical process control charts (Montgomery,2010).
Quality of a product or services is defined as its fitness for the use for which it has been made. Many
characteristics of a product determine the quality. They are called quality characteristics. Some of the
quality characteristics are shape, weight, size, diameter, strength, colour, hardness, surface finish,
reliability and appearance, etc.
In a manufacturing process, all the products will not be exactly a same. Quality will vary from piece to
piece. That is, there will be variations in quality characteristics of products. The causes for these
variations are found out and analysed. Suitable corrective action is to be taken to minimise the
variations within certain limits. This is done to maintain the quality. Statistical quality control charts
techniques are used to improvement the quality process in automobile parts manufacturing company.
Quality is a concept of several meanings, subjective and individual to the interpreter. When
mentioning that something is of a certain quality, it is assumed and associated to be good in some way.
More generally, the definition of quality has

Descriptive Essay About Scrabble
It is a sunday afternoon full of immense heat. My dreary husband and I are about to begin a game of
scrabble. Such a bore, yet it is the only thing we can think of to do in the boring afternoon.
My husband seems to have a pained look on his face. The kind of look that makes it seem my very
presence in this room aggravates him. Maybe it is the heat, maybe he is just having a bad day. Little
does he know that his day is about to get a whole lot worse, thanks to this not so ordinary scrabble
board. We begin our game. I draw out my letters and place them on my rack. I have some decent
letters, maybe I can make a play off my husbands word. He plays BEGIN, picking up very little points

game. For a brief moment, I thought he was going to physically kill me first. However the look of
anguish passes over his face and he slumps back down in his chair, seemingly defeated. Suddenly I
see my next word, I play READY. Almost as if I am preparing him for his fate. I see a quick
movement of a hand at the last possible second. Coincidentally, my husband plays the word
CHEATING. I am almost certain he is doing just that, but I think I will entertain myself and ask
anyways. Unfortunately I receive no response. To my benefit this helps me realize my next word,
which was IGNORE. My husband is rearranging his letters furiously. It seems he is really looking for
a special word to score big on me. I am anxious and afraid to see what he plays, because the game
works both ways. He has found his word. He settles on EXPLODES. As my husband lays his last
letter down, there is an almost ear shattering bang that comes from our air conditioner as it fails once
again. But that was not the most frightening thing to happen at that moment. It was the look of
disbelief upon my husbands face. He studies the words on the board. Looking about the room. I think
he has figured it out. The words on my game

Democratic Or Republican Essay

Democratic or Republican?
I have been in Texas from ten months for pursuing my further education. The place where I am
currently dwelling i.e. 3225 West Walnut Hill Lane, Irving, Texas is numbered as district 16. 1 As per
the research, I found that Don Huffines represents district 16 in the Texas senate. It is full of diverse
population providing several opportunities to its citizens. 2 Around 846,307 people are living in
district 16 in which 7.2% of the total population are below five years old, 17.1% belong to the age

As per the results of two surveys, I was categorized as a liberal person. I count myself as the supporter
of Democratic party in USA. However, Don Huffines who is the representative of Texas senate from
district 16 is from Republican party who tries to expand his conservative philosophy.
One of the issues I stand against is for the right to keep and bear arms. The Republican party supports
the right to keep guns but the Democratic party is against it and so am I. In this issue, my ideas
diverge with the Republican party since it opposes the laws which limit the open use of guns. Even
Don Huffines states that every Texans should have legal rights to possess their fire arms. Republican
party are against the tax regulations of guns and argue to make a strong law for carrying guns as they
believe that it s God given right. However, I am against this action of Don Huffines as it can be more
severe in some contexts. Recently, even in my college Northlake college of Irving, a girl was
murdered by a guy who had gun which happened when I was there. What is the guarantee that such
acts will not be repeated in future? Carrying guns can be easy processes to threaten anyone showing
its power and as an international student, it sometimes scares me. Obviously, by carrying guns and
other arms, one can have personal protection but it s not a wiser decision to

Examples Of Realism In To Build A Fire
Realism is defined as accepting something or a situation as it is. Realism can be compared in the all
three of these stories. One story being fictional and the others based on factual evidence. Realism
shows the truth in each novel and its up to the readers or the main character to accept the challenge put
in front of it. Jack London wrote To Build A Fire to show the literary conflict of man versus
nature.Sadly, the man never realizes the reality of his environment and it leads him to his death. When
he ran through the freezing cold water his body reacted as so written, He was losing in this battle with
the frost. It was creeping into his body from all sides. Mentally, he couldnt believe how much of a fool
he was acting. He thought he can overcome the battle of below fifty degrees weather. On the other
hand, the dog could handle the hostility of the environment and realized the man wasnt going to make
before the mans death. This story shows realism from two points of view, the dog realizing the mans
fate and the man not accepting that his body couldnt handle the weather. ... Show more content on

stuff into your face; and when a man s sleeves were smeared with blood, and his hands steeped in it,

Factors Of Macro Environment

An organisation s operating environment has two parts; the Macro environment and the

Political factors influence organisations in many ways. Political factors can create advantages and
opportunities for organisations. Conversely they can place obligations and duties on organisations.
Political factors include the following types of instrument:
Legislation such as the minimum wage or anti discrimination laws.
Voluntary codes and practices
Market regulations
Trade agreements, tariffs or restrictions
Tax levies and tax breaks
Type of government regime e.g. communist, democratic, dictatorship
Non conformance with legislative obligations can lead to sanctions such as fines, adverse publicity
and imprisonment. Ineffective voluntary codes and practices will often lead to governments
introducing legislation to regulate the activities covered by the codes and practices.
Economical
The second element of a PEST analysis involves a study of economic factors. All businesses are
affected by national and global economic factors. National (and global) interest rates and fiscal policy
is set around economic conditions. The climate of the economy dictates how consumers, suppliers and
other organisational stakeholders such as suppliers and creditors behave within society. An economy
undergoing recession will have high unemployment, low spending power and low stakeholder
confidence. Conversely a booming or growing economy will have low unemployment, high spending
power and high stakeholder

Effects Of Plastic Surgery Among Teenagers
Plastic Surgery amongst Teenagers is on the rise In the year 2015, where here in the United States

I mean by influence is plastic surgery. You see it everywhere it s on TV, on billboards, on the radio and
all over the magazines. It seems as if everything a well known celebrity does teens want to do also.

With all these risks, why do people still go through with this dangerous procedure? I don t think it s
worth it. But according to the opposing article www.platicsurgeons.com if patients go through the
procedure the affects will be long term and you will get what you want. In my opinion with dangerous
risks including losing your life it isn t worth it. Plastic surgery may raise self esteem, but often does
not. Many teens don t realize even the most beautiful people, including celebrities, are insecure about
their appearances. And getting plastic surgery cannot fix all of your problems. Many teens get plastice
surgery for unrealistic reason, such as to fit in with other peers or to keep up with lastest celebrities, or
to attempt to improve their physical appearance as said in the article www.wtvq.com/health the media

According to the Wikipedia Encyclopedia the frontal lobe of the brain does not fully develop until the
20s to 30s. That portion of the brain controls decision making, and understanding consequences. This
is another reason why teenagers should not have plastic surgery. Therefore teenagers should not
undergo the plastic surgery when you are young and surgeon should not touch the body that is not yet
fully grown. Plastic surgery is a dangerous idea for teenagers as their decision

Over the past few years, gas prices in the United States have been on the rise. What is causing the

of dollars paid per gallon at the pump. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (eia)

This is a story about a group of animals that live on Manor Farm, a farm in the British countryside that
is under the operation of Mr. Jones, a poor drunkard. Old Major, a well respected pig, calls all of the
animals to a meeting to share his vision of a farm free of humans, where the animals reap what they

today is classified as a cult classic in its time and is a fore runner today for many other dystopia sci fi

levels of BPA. Feldman and his team discovered an estrogenic molecule while growing yeast in plastic
flasks in 1992. They discovered the yeast wasn t synthesizing the estrogen, but rather it was leaching
from the plastic. The team then performed a control experiment without the yeast in the flask, and they
found there was still an estrogenic molecule present, which they later identified as BPA. Once they
made the connection between polycarbonate, BPA and estrogenic activity, Feldman and his team
contacted a major producer of polycarbonates. It turns out, the company had already looked into the
leeching issue, but after using their own methods, they said they couldn t find any estrogenic activity.
Other studies soon popped up, including the University of Missouri Columbia that found low level
exposure to BPA may harm the prostate. Over the next decade, reports on low dose BPA toxicity will
grow to include more than 100

The Complex Variety Of Stimuli We Constantly Encounter Essay
Abstract
Our uniqueness in solving problems and forming an understanding of the complex variety of stimuli
we constantly encounter is a defining feature of human experience. A very powerful problem solving
tool is known as the Mental Set and takes place largely at an unconscious level. Mental sets increase
the problem solving success rate for related problems by enlisting a mental framework that recycles
methods that proved successful for solving similar problems in the past. Conversely, the mental set
inhibits the success of similar problems that require a slightly different method to be solved. Once in a
mental set, it is difficult to find a solution for a novel problem. Mental sets vary in the intensity and
duration in which they inhibit an individual s creativity for solving novel problems. The mental
processes that allow for mental sets have long been viewed as static. Recent research involving
transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has
provided support that these processes are actually quite dynamic and capable of being influenced in a
laboratory setting. Dissolving a mental set with these aforementioned procedures has also been shown
to temporarily induce savant skills. I propose that Keywords:
It is well known that individuals with savant syndrome and autistic spectrum disorder have some
degree of hemispheric imbalance. This imbalance has been shown to be an inhibition of the left
hemisphere and a

Marilyn Monroe Research Paper Outline
For many Marilyn Monroe was an idol. Several people wanted to look like her, be like her. They
wanted Marilyn s life, her clothing, her fame, and of course, her money. But Marilyn s life wasn t
always all that great. On June 1st, 1926 Norma Jean Baker a.k.a. Marilyn Monroe was born to Gladys
Mortenson in Los Angeles California. Gladys was a paranoid schizophrenic. Norma Jean grew up in
foster homes and didn t get much of an education. Which would probably explain a lot of her choices
later on in life. After her sixteenth birthday in 1942 Norma married a man that she called Daddy. She
married him to avoid having to be moved to another foster home. Norma worked at the Radio plane
company in California during WWII. That s when she started being photographed. She started taking
modeling classes. In 1946 Norma started to go after her dreams of becoming an actor and got

Aggregate Supply Curve
AGGREGATE DEMAND, AGGREGATE SUPPLY, FISCAL
AND MONETARYPOLICY
Q No 1. Explain why the Aggregate Supply curve is upward sloping in the short run and vertical in the
long run?
Aggregate supply is the total supply of goods and services produced by any firm in a country for
economic plan and sell these goods and services during a year. These goods and services are willing to
sell at a given price by firms.
Short Run Aggregate Supply Curve
In short run, the aggregate supply curve will go upward because there are two main reasons due to
which quantity supplied increases with the increase in price.
Firstly, the curve is used for nominal variable like wage rate and in short run, the nominal wage rate is
fixed which resulted in higher profits that give expansion in the output. ... Show more content on

When demand is at low level, large number of production does not use their fixed capital equipment
then the result will be increase in production without diminishing returns. So average price level does
not increase but production increases. When demand is increased, the prices will increase which
results in a steep curve.
Long Run in Aggregate Supply Curve
In long run, aggregate supply is affected from capital, labor and technology because everything is
assumed to be used optimally at this point. In long run, aggregate supply curve is perfectly vertical
which economists belief that changes in aggregate demand is the only reason of temporary change in
total output. In long run, only one quantity will be supplied and wage rate varies with economic
conditions i.e. high unemployment leads to fall in nominal wage rate and vice

Imagery Throughout History Has Been A Big Factor In Creating
Imagery throughout history has been a big factor in creating social norms and acts as a site of conflict.
Throughout time, we have used art pieces such as stories, mythology, paintings and movies as a way
of conflict, to get a point across, or to tell a story. A big theme presented over time has been the
ideologies of women and their role. Through time, we are able to see the way in which the roles of a
female has been continuously constructed and reconstructed over and over again. This paper will look
at the portrayal of femme fatale throughout history showing the lack of progression when it comes to
gender stereotypes.
The femme fatale is a mysterious, seductive woman who lures men into dangerous or compromising
situations, attracting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These characteristics are even present in the story of Adam and Eve. In fact, characteristics drawn
from biblical contexts seem to be very prominent. It is through these images of a woman that first
create these gender stereotypes. As we go on, it will be seen that different pieces of work allow
maintaining and further reinforcing the stereotype of the femme fatale. The story of Adam and Eve is
perhaps the first example of a femme fatale. Eve the first woman on earth, created from a man s rib as
a gift to Adam from god. Eve sought the Tree of Knowledge and as the story goes, bit into the apple in
the Garden of Eden, letting all evil into the world. Eve brought about the fall of mankind and
introduced things such as sin and death. She was tempted by the serpent and further, tempts Adam
with her beauty and sexuality to bite the apple thus being the classic example of a femme fatale.
Another popular example is taken from Jewish tradition. The very popular Lilith is also associated
with the first version of creation. Estimated at 1025 1594 BCB Lilith was Adams first wife. God is
said to have created Lilith from clay, not from a mans rib, thus being equal to man. The story goes as
Lilith shows up as a naked lady to seduce husbands who otherwise are reasonable husbands. Lilith s
name is associated with being related to a dark deity, ex goddess, ancient demon, and even a vampire
throughout time. One thing

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Precedent
Introduction
This essay will discuss how Irish courts have applied the doctrine of precedent. It will review the
advantages and disadvantages of the doctrine of Stare Decisis. Additionally, it will compare and
contrast the Supreme Court and the High Court with regards to its position on precedent. It will show
that precedent is not a binding unalterable rule , as stated in Rigoni in Common Law judicial
reasoning and Analogy, by explaining the practice of distinguishing. It build a clear picture of the
flexibility of the courts when it comes to precedent. Although precedent is largely unquestioned by
Irish Courts, that doesn t mean that it s a rigid, fixed rule.

Similar to the Supreme Court, the High court will depart from precedent but is unlikely to do so. In
Attorney General V Residential Institutions Board, Hogan J decided a case but would have done so
differently if it wasn t covered by recent authority. Thus he was compelled to follow precedent with
deep personal reluctance . It is clear that the High Court is reluctant to depart from Precedent. In
Kearns v Manresa Estates Ltd [1975], Kenny observed that the High Court will not depart from
precedent unless the case has been wrongly decided. There are practical reasons for this. The High
Court is the court of first Instance and it ought to ensure predictability and stability. There is the option
to the Supreme Court if the parties involved are not happy with the decision. The Supreme Court can
be more flexible and can take into account other facts of the case. Both the Supreme Court and the
High Court have the possibility of departing from president. This proves that the Doctrine of Stare

Smartphone Addiction
Is Smartphone Addiction Killing Today s Teens? The arrival of the smartphones had radically changed
every aspect of teenagers lives, from the nature of their social interactions to their mental health
(Twenge 60). Smartphones are easy to carry mobile devices that almost have the functions of a
computer like internet access, video games, social networks, and of course calls and text messages. In
2014 in the USA almost 60% of the population owned a smartphone (Cheever, et al. 291). The
percentage of people that own a smartphone has been increasing fast since then, especially in young
people who overuse their mobile devices. Excessive use of smartphones is associated with the
addiction to these devices and other psychological imbalances that can lead to death. Smartphone
addiction is changing the behavior and attitudes of today s teenagers which can lead to serious
psychological issues. Excessive use of smartphones can lead to addiction, which can cause radical
behavioral changes, sleep deprivation and serious physical and psychological problems over time. For
people who use their smartphones more on a daily basis, it becomes harder for them to live without
these mobile devices (Cheever 290). Smartphone and internet addiction is a compulsive usage of

college students feel the need to be connected to their smartphones all the time (Chisholm 77) to

Baltimore based on a 100,000 population was 600 robberies, 37.4 rapes, and so far 131 homicides just

The city life gave the Irish a chance to continue to stay close to their families and communities, a
chance to help one another out. This strong sense of belonging is evident in all Irish communities; the
upper class would only try to help their own by giving them jobs or housing. The Irish did not only
look to the streets for sanctuary, but also looked to a higher power. The most important community
was that of the local church. For many, social events at the churches, such as dances and mixers, were
a way for the Irish to unwind and relax. The churches and communities helped the families of the Irish
grow and provided a backbone for the next hundred years.
The improving times were not just a change for American, but also for the Irish. The improvement of
the economic status of the Irish Americans helped boost family lift and esprit. Most Irish American
families when first arriving in America had little or no money, thus forcing them to settle in the urban
centers of the Northeast. Within the cities, families were close and revolved around the church, where
they practiced catholic views and preaching against contraception; therefore, many Irish Catholics had

the money to feed and clothe their large families. In addition, many Irish Americans could now afford

c) Job rotation of employees enhances their skills
d) Cost of recruitment is reduced due to combining of requirements and increased efficiency, such as

Why Americans Hate Soccer Research Paper
Why Americans Hate Soccer Why do Americans hate soccer? Is it because were are not the best at it?
There are many factors. Soccer has had a rough time in the United States. People didn t really see it as
a major sport until 1994 when the USA hosted the FIFA World Cup. Befor this, there wasn t a even a
professional league. With the terms of hosting, the United States had to form a league. In 1993, Major
League Soccer was formed. It took a few years to catch on, but is now at an all time high. To find the
real core of the hatred, we need to look back at the history of sports and the role soccer has played in
the United States.
Soccer was brought to the United States around the 1850s. I was first played in New Orleans by
English, German, Scottish and Irish settlers seeking a better life and more opportunity in the United
States. Back then, soccer was played with 25 players a side. In current rules, you get 11 players a side
(including a goalkeeper). In 1884, soccer in the United States took a major step in the founding of the
American Football Association. As you can see, they didn t call it soccer back then. They only started
calling it soccer around the 1920s. This was because it was often confused with American Football. ...

The Issue Of American Patriotism
Nationalism and patriotism is a very touchy subject for some people just due to the fact of everyone
having their own opinion on what it means. Some people just do not know the difference between the
two, or just don t know if there even is a difference. They are very often commonly confused as the
same thing and I can see why at first glance, but after searching this subject on many credible sources
I have come to find many clarifying and interesting facts on this particular topic.
First of all, the actual definition of American patriotism is the pride and devotion to one s homeland.
As everything does, there are pros and cons to being a patriot. For example, a pro would be that it
leads us to feel proud of and for our county. That ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unless your knowledge is of a universal type, equally useful and valued anywhere; then it makes no
difference where you live, as long as you enjoy your life. Another being specialization; patriotism
instinctively guides citizens to discover their natural and cultural specialties: their own resources,
traditions, industries, and identity that has existed for ages. They will not imitate or copy another
country blindly. Loving a place makes one automatically love, learn, cherish, and improve the special
qualities about it/them. A couple of the others are commitment and security. Most cons of patriotism
fall under the category of centralization being harmful. They claim that the benefits enjoyed by
centralized countries will eventually be shared by everyone worldwide. They say that it is not a big
problem to desert some countries as long as citizens are happy and successful elsewhere. They also
claim that in over populated countries, or those with high unemployment rates, its better when people
leave. I do not neccesarily agree with all of this but I do think the majority of the claims made are true.
Nationalism has two definitions that basically mean the same thing but one is more easily understood.

the NIBRS is to become the new standard for law enforcement to report crime data to the FBI.
NACJD, a part of the Inter University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), was
conducted at the University of Michigan, and was designed to learn about the NIBRS dataset, to
connect the information to other NIBRS sources. The NIBRS is comprehensive because it accounts
for 22 offense categories. David Cuthbertson, the assistant director of the Criminal Justice Information
Services Division explains, the NIBRS 2011 and contains the information about the offenders,
victims, and ect. According to Cuthbertson, the data has new categories such as; gang offenses,

Consequences Of The Trail Of Tears
The Trail of Tears has been an American predicament as to whether the forceful removal of Cherokee
tribes from their homelands was unconstitutional. The Trail of Tears devastated many Cherokee
people, families, and homes, and is still a debate whether the whole fiasco was unconstitutional.
Through the years 1816 1840 Native American nations signed more than 40 different treaties that gave
up more and more of the Natives homeland. When President Andrew Jackson came into power
starting in 1829, Jackson made it his policy to remove the Eastern Native American tribes beyond the
white settlements. Then in 1830 U.S. Congress endorsed Jackson s policy and in return passed the
Indian Removal Act, forcing the indians to move west of the Mississippi. Between the years 1830 and
1850, around 100,000 Native Americans living between the Mississippi River and the United States
were brutally treated and forced to move West. Davy Crockett who respected and was a scout under
Andrew Jackson during the Creek War, was a congressman from Tennessee during Jackson s term and
called the Indian Removal Act unjust. Jackson s Indian Removal policy would set the stage for Trail of
Tears and the forceful removal of the Cherokee Nation.
The Trail of Tears stemmed from Andrew Jackson s Indian Removal Act, the Cherokees were forced
to move West of the Mississippi into now a day Oklahoma. The Trail of Tears was the name given by
the Cherokee people of the cross country journey they made, because of the

The Minster s Black Veil Essay
In 1832, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote a chilling, dark tale about a Puritan society that exposed their
hypocrisies called The Minster s Black Veil. The Puritans believed everyone was a sinner at birth.
Because of this they were unsure who was saved or were damned, and it led to them to start judging
others. In the story, Hawthorne starts to uncover the dark habits of the seemingly happy community;
by giving their pastor a black veil. When the pastor refuses to remove veil, the town is struck with
fear. The veil sends the whole community questioning their pastor s sanity, or if he committed a horrid
sin. The story highlights the Puritans belief that some are saved while others are damned, therefore,
they must separate the sinners and virtuous using the binaries light, dark, feminine, and masculine;
which comes together in the form of the veil. From the beginning, Hawthorne sets up a drastic contrast
between before and after the appearance of the veil. Hawthorne describes the town as bright and
cheerful: Children with bright faces, tript merrily beside their parents, or mimicked a graver gait, in
the conscious dignity of their Sunday clothes. Spruce bachelors ... Show more content on

A minster for the Puritans was an extremely important role in their society because religion was a
crucial aspect of their cultural. Their main goal in life is to achieve salvation by doing God s work.
Religious leaders are held to a higher standard by the community, even today. Due to this phenomenon
when Mr. Hooper starts wearing the black veil it is completely earth shattering to their community and
leaves them wondering what he could have done to want to hide. The Puritans idealize Mr. Hooper
and are uncertain if they can still do that. If they cannot idealize Mr. Hooper it leaves them with some
remaining questions who would replace Mr. Hooper; and would they be as

Incorporating Technology Into Grade Level Performance...
In, an attempt to improve the integration of available technology, educators and policymakers are
reevaluating ways to incorporate technology into the grade level performance standards without
separating the two educational standards (Collins Halverson, 2009). Presently, students and teachers
have the ability to transmit information through third and fourth generation technological resources;
yet, few take advantage of the endless educational possibilities (Francis Mishra, 2008; Marino,
Sameshima, Beecher, 2009; Koehler Mishra, 2006; Sharples, 2007; Su Luan Teo, 2009). According to
Francis and Mishra (2008), classroom teachers will need to be knowledgeable of the security of
information stored or transmitted through accessible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In spite of teachers negative attitudes towards changes and/ or technophobia, as the world changes, so
must the classrooms, teachers, and delivery of knowledge to students (Hall, 2010; Su Luan Teo 2009;
Ursavas Karal, 2009; Prensky, 2008). Not addressing teachers negative attitudes will invariably lead to
continued challenges with incorporating classroom technology, especially with those teachers who
focus lessons on memorization or note taking. Typically, in many American classrooms, teachers can
be seen using the same traditional methodologies used a century or more ago with change resistant
teachers instructing students seated in straight rows within the classroom (Sharples, 2007; Overbay,
Patterson, Grable, 2009; Su Luan Teo 2009). On the other hand, researchers suggested that teaching in
that manner should also include active learning where students take part in the instructional process
(Strasser, 2006; Ryu Parsons, 2009). Clearly, based on research there is an effectual demand for
teachers to focus lessons on learning ways to learn or research, by using technology to promote active
learning and build students technological skills (Ara, 2009; Prensky, 2008; Ryu Parsons, 2009). This
research will add to the body of literature of prior theoretical studies of classroom technology usage
and Technology attitude scale (TAS) through assessing teacher s technology perspectives relationship

1990 s Take Off And Beyond Essay
The 1990 s Take Off and Beyond
The early 1990s is when the modern day began. In 1992, and Oxford University computer scientists
named Tim Berners Lee developed the World Wide Web. This was a data sharing space that anyone
with an internet connection can access. Not just government research centers and scientists with
access to top of the of the line equipment. As the 1990 s continued, the Internet continued to globalize.
In 1992, Erwise was the first successful Internet browser due to the graphical user interface software it
supplied. Erwise paved the way for Mosaic and eventually Netscape which accounted for 90 percent
of all internet browsing activity. As the Internet started to grow faster, companies such America Online
and Compuserve offered Internet through a dial up network connection. This allowed anyone with a
home phone line access to the Internet. The Internet was now expanding into residential homes and
was expanding globally. In 1994, the use of the internet was expanding by 2,500 percent a year.

to see most commuters holding a newspaper while riding the subway to work, today it has evolved to
smartphones and tablets. Phone applications have made it even easier to access information. Now in
the palm of their hands, a consumer has access to virtually anything they want or need anytime of the
day. Companies such as Facebook have launched initiatives to allow the Internet to become ubiquitous
in all parts of the world by utilizing drone technology. Google has launched initiatives such as Google

Fundamental Elements to Consider When Making Medical...
Short Essay As a matter of ethics and the given law, there are controversial aspects outlining the
fundamental elements an individual is to consider when making medical decisions. Following the
Canadian legal system, adults who understand the consequences of their medical choice have the
ability to decline any medical treatments they would like even if it has the ability to save their lives.
That is the idea of an individual being a self proprietor. The Canadian common law acknowledged that
an individual has the right to control their body. Tort battery, being when unwanted physical
interference takes place without his or her permission has constantly protected bodily security .

A.C. then appeals in court arguing that her capacity was not assessed in order for them to make such a
decision providing her with the blood transfusion . The case went on to the Supreme Court of Canada
ruled against A.C because the blood transfusion did not violate her rights. But due to this case, the
Supreme Court of Canada found that children may make life and death decisions about their medical
treatment. Justice Rosalie Abella disagreed with the courts decision and stated that children under the
age of sixteen will have the ability to display their mature medical judgment making capacity , which
was stated, in the mature minor doctrine. Currently, in the common laws mature minor doctrine, a
minor patient may possess the maturity to choose or reject a particular health care treatment without
the knowledge or agreement of the parents. This common law policy averts the need for parental
consent. Within Canada, the Ontario Health Care Consent Act also indicates the law s approach to
children s decision making capacity in relation to medical treatment. Section four of the Act indicates
that children have the capacity to make a medical decision if they can understand the information and
can appreciate the consequences therefore, it is not driven by age, but by the level of wisdom and
understanding capacity . This legal element was taken into

Momotaro s Divine Sea Warriors Propaganda
During the time of war, nations come to rely on propaganda to help invigorate a sense of nationalism
into their people. Not only does it encourage them to unify as one, but propaganda also creates an
enemy, someone that needs to be defeated. The use of propaganda is not limited to those old enough to
understand what is happening in the world, rather it is used even upon the young and innocent who are
new to the world around them. Children become a target that can be swayed by ideals, but it must be
dealt with in a different manner. Using animation is one way to influence a younger audience,
especially by using cute animals and a figure that is well known to them, a fictional figure like
Momotaro. This familiar character for the Japanese is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Momotaro is still the leader and animals do follow his command, which include dogs, monkeys, and
pheasants from the original tale, as well as other animals, such as bears and rabbits. They band
together, forming a community and are set to attack the devils of an unfamiliar territory. In both
fictional medias, Momotaro and his friends are victorious, defeating the devils with strength and
words, not giving up until they have completely surrendered. It is a happy ending for Japan that is
acquired through these feats. Unlike the original text, the film does have more to add, such as showing
the lives of soldiers when they return to their home and being welcomed back, colonizing an island in
an optimistic way, giving reason to attack the devils in a silhouette scene, fighting off the devils in a
more human way, and hinting at a future in which Japan will conquer more

  • 2. My Trip To Mackinaw Island-Personal Narrative It was last summer around July when my family and I woke up around 7:00 A.M to drive to Mackinaw Island. Preparing for this trip was extremely hectic because we had to pack all of our clothes and food that we wanted for the car ride. We were all in the car around 7:45 with all of our things packed. We locked all the doors up and turn all the lights off. The drive took us about 4 hours to get to St. Ignace. My sisters and I watched a movie during the car ride, read and did homework so that we were occupied during the long car ride. My favorite part when we were driving was probably when we went across the Mackinaw Bridge because, it felt like our car was driving on the bright blue lake which was cool. My older sister Peyton did not want to go on the zipline because she had already done it before when she went to 6th grade camp. My Dad went up desk and paid for two tickets, one for me and one for my sister Lauryn. First we had to step through a harness and buckle it around our waste. Next, we had to put on a red helmet that had the company s logo and a strap to put around our neck. Once all of our safety gear was on we moved to the tall platform. I could hear my heart starting to pound out of my chest. I was beginning to have second thoughts. I could feel my hair blowing in the wind. It was time for me to go. The man pushed me off the platform. Suddenly my feet were dangling in mid air. I felt like I was flying in the sky. Beneath us were people playing mini golf. I was wondering what would happen if I fell down, but I realized that I was going to be safe and that it would be unrealistic. Once we reached the end of the zip line we had to walk all the way back to where we started. We went on the zipline again because my parents got the tickets where you got to go two times. After that, we thanked our parent because we knew that this was something that we were going to remember. My sister Peyton also regretted not going on the ride because she saw how much fun we really had. Levi Strauss Levi Strauss at Home and Abroad As one attempts to assess the business ethics of Levi Strauss and Nike in this writing assignment, we are again compelled to revisit the critical distinction of conduct that is legal, yet still unethical. In both instances, Levi Strauss and Nike behaved with the parameters of legal conduct, yet few would argue that profiting from exploitive work conditions is an ethical behavior of any socially responsible organization (broad view social responsibility). Obviously, it s very tempting to just condense this argument to the point of bad companies boosting profits from lower labor costs via exploiting foreign workers in sweatshops . I am going to take a much broader approach here in my assessment, as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The end result of this ruling is that corporations that profit greatly from outsourced labor are now able to pay for the elections of our Congressmen and gee, wonder how this economic favor will be repaid when attempts to rein in outsourcing come up in Congress? Let s move on to our two protagonists in this debate: Levi Strauss and Nike. Now that we ve got the backdrop well in hand, and a reasonable person would agree that a massive systemic failure in the U.S. has allowed and promoted unchecked outsourcing of jobs, it s time to discuss these two corporate giants and their respective behaviors here. Do these two corporations have a responsibility to monitor the conduct of the companies they do business with in particular, their contractors and suppliers? As a personal believer in the broader view of corporate social responsibility, I believe that they do. Notwithstanding the fact that all of this outsourcing is legal, and despite the mitigating factors that I ve argued above that do alleviate these two companies of all of the blame I still believe that they need to take the higher moral ground. Levi Strauss overall has conducted itself with far greater corporate social responsibility than Nike has, in my judgment. Strauss for many years withdrew from China due to their notoriety as a non democratic country with abusive labor conditions. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Leadership And The Psychodynamic Approach In my opinion, even though it was assumed that some people are naturally born leaders, it was also argued that certain leadership traits can be developed through experiences. With reference to the leadership trait questionnaire that I have done previously, one of my stronger character trait that was reflected was empathy. Cross referencing this to the Psychodynamic approach, under the Myers Briggs personality test, I found myself to be an INFP Introversion, intuition, feeling, perception. The main core trait associated with those who are classified as an INFP was coincidentally empathy as well where those under that category aim to seek harmony and authenticity in our relationship with others. • 6. Cultural Values In The Odyssey Thousands of peoples of thousands of cultures exist today. Each existing culture possesses customs valuable to its people. One method of discovering the importance of certain customs to cultures is to examine their literature. For example, Homer conveys many significant Greek customs throughout the novel, The Odyssey. In his novel, he explains the importance of hospitality to the Greeks through the actions of Circe, the goddess, when she takes care of Odysseus s men, and Maron when he provides a gift of gratitude to Odysseus. A need for order and justification also exemplifies another important custom of the Greeks.Author Homer utilizes examples of Odysseus s murdering of the suitors who take over his home and Poseidon s punishment to Odysseus for hurting his son to convey the importance of the importance of justice to the Greeks . Homer explains this importance through a cause and effect punishment system from disobeying the gods orders. Piety models another cultural value of the Greeks through Homer s book, which he explains through details of Odysseus sacrifices, man s prayers to the gods, and mans humility to the gods power. Through the hospitality of Circe and Polyphemus, the need for order and justification in obeying the gods, and piety for the gods orders, Homer reflects important customs to the Greeks in The Odyssey. This confusion is deepened because I had no prior knowledge of the characters and plot. There are many characters that Faulkner mentions in the first twenty five pages of the novels and so I was trying to connect the characters and find out who was who. Faulkner also constantly refers to Addie as she . This confused me at first because I didn t know who Faulkner was referring to and how Addie was related to all of the other characters. I found that as long as I read very slowly and pay attention to detail, I can understand the language of the story better than I expected. I was able to connect all the characters and ... Entry 3 I find that I am having trouble reading some characters narrations more than others. Cash s narrations are the simplest to read as his thoughts are fairly straightforward to follow and his narration doesn t move from one idea to another. Vardaman, Dewey Dell and Darl all have narrations that are difficult to follow because their thoughts move rapidly from one idea to another. Vardaman is a child and his narration is the most difficult to understand because of the childish manner it is written in. Dewey Dell also expresses very complicated thoughts. Dewey Dell begins her narration using only he to identify who she is thinking about. She also continually refers to herself and him as a tub of guts. Darl is very thoughtful and his thoughts move from one topic to something completely different and so I find his narration very difficult to follow. Entry 4 There have been many examples of animal symbolism in As I Lay Dying. I didn t understand what Vardaman meant when he first says my mother is a fish (76) and later when Darl says Jewel s mother is a horse (86). The Popularity of Gangster Films in the Early Nineteen Thirties The late 1920s in America was a particularly tumultuous period of time for the country. The Wall Street Crash in 1929 had led to high levels of unemployment and dissatisfaction within the country. The Depression (1929 1934), which was a direct result of The Wall Street Crash, led to a breakdown of industry and commerce within the country and weakened its global position as a superpower. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this period the rise of urban gang rule and mobsters was unprecedented, mainly emerging from minority immigrant groups (Jewish/Italian/Irish). Initially the gangsters of the period were seen as high achievers as they were associated with the proletariat and seemed to be capable of rising above there roots, even during hard times in America, and achieve wealth. When considering the socio economic factors it is easy to understand why such men were considered as gangster heroes [3] who represented the people, however the only way that gangsters could achieve this wealth, subsequently fulfilling the American Dream, was by stealing it. Accruing capital meant accruing power over others [4]. Therefore it could be argued that the success gangsters exemplified was a perverse form of the American dream as it disregarded some of the key elements of the ideal. The fact that at this stage in America gangsters were the only group within society who could make upward mobility believable, tells much about how legitimate institutions had failed but that mobility was still at the core of what Americans held to be the American dream [5]. In the early 1930 s productions began within Hollywood of what were commonly described as social problem pictures [6], these films dealt specifically with the social difficulties of the period such as unemployment/labour struggles ( Black ... Some of the quality characteristics are shape, weight, size, diameter, strength, colour, hardness, surface finish, reliability and appearance, etc. In a manufacturing process, all the products will not be exactly a same. Quality will vary from piece to piece. That is, there will be variations in quality characteristics of products. The causes for these variations are found out and analysed. Suitable corrective action is to be taken to minimise the variations within certain limits. This is done to maintain the quality. Statistical quality control charts techniques are used to improvement the quality process in automobile parts manufacturing company. One story being fictional and the others based on factual evidence. Realism shows the truth in each novel and its up to the readers or the main character to accept the challenge put in front of it. Jack London wrote To Build A Fire to show the literary conflict of man versus nature.Sadly, the man never realizes the reality of his environment and it leads him to his death. When he ran through the freezing cold water his body reacted as so written, He was losing in this battle with the frost. It was creeping into his body from all sides. Mentally, he couldnt believe how much of a fool he was acting. He thought he can overcome the battle of below fifty degrees weather. It s used in screwdriver handles, eyeglass lenses, DVDs, CDs, and food containers. Although versatile and durable, polycarbonate contains a controversial chemical called bisphenol A, or BPA. Some studies have linked BPA exposure to a variety of health problems. Bisphenol has many forms, but its most common is Bisphenol A, also known as BPA. Polycarbonates started out in fuse boxes, plug connections and glazes for public buildings. Polycarbonates soon became popular for many other uses, such as plastic bottles and linings for metal based food and beverage cans. The use of polycarbonates for food packaging easily received approval in the 1960s by the FDA under its food additive regulations. During the early 1990s, Dr. Feldman became the first researcher to identify the possible impact of low levels of BPA. Feldman and his team discovered an estrogenic molecule while growing yeast in plastic flasks in 1992. They discovered the yeast wasn t synthesizing the estrogen, but rather it was leaching from the plastic. The team then performed a control experiment without the yeast in the flask, and they found there was still an estrogenic molecule present, which they later identified as BPA. Once they made the connection between polycarbonate, BPA and estrogenic activity, Feldman and his team contacted a major producer of polycarbonates. It turns out, the company had already looked into the leeching issue, but after using their own methods, they said they couldn t find any estrogenic activity. Other studies soon popped up, including the University of Missouri Columbia that found low level exposure to BPA may harm the prostate. • 21. The Complex Variety Of Stimuli We Constantly Encounter Essay Abstract Our uniqueness in solving problems and forming an understanding of the complex variety of stimuli we constantly encounter is a defining feature of human experience. A very powerful problem solving tool is known as the Mental Set and takes place largely at an unconscious level. Mental sets increase the problem solving success rate for related problems by enlisting a mental framework that recycles methods that proved successful for solving similar problems in the past. Conversely, the mental set inhibits the success of similar problems that require a slightly different method to be solved. Once in a mental set, it is difficult to find a solution for a novel problem. Mental sets vary in the intensity and duration in which they inhibit an individual s creativity for solving novel problems. The mental processes that allow for mental sets have long been viewed as static. Recent research involving transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has provided support that these processes are actually quite dynamic and capable of being influenced in a laboratory setting. Dissolving a mental set with these aforementioned procedures has also been shown to temporarily induce savant skills. Aggregate supply is the total supply of goods and services produced by any firm in a country for economic plan and sell these goods and services during a year. These goods and services are willing to sell at a given price by firms. Short Run Aggregate Supply Curve In short run, the aggregate supply curve will go upward because there are two main reasons due to which quantity supplied increases with the increase in price. The story of Adam and Eve is perhaps the first example of a femme fatale. Eve the first woman on earth, created from a man s rib as a gift to Adam from god. Soccer has had a rough time in the United States. People didn t really see it as a major sport until 1994 when the USA hosted the FIFA World Cup. Befor this, there wasn t a even a professional league. With the terms of hosting, the United States had to form a league. In 1993, Major League Soccer was formed. It took a few years to catch on, but is now at an all time high. To find the real core of the hatred, we need to look back at the history of sports and the role soccer has played in the United States. Soccer was brought to the United States around the 1850s. I was first played in New Orleans by English, German, Scottish and Irish settlers seeking a better life and more opportunity in the United States. Back then, soccer was played with 25 players a side. • 41. Consequences Of The Trail Of Tears The Trail of Tears has been an American predicament as to whether the forceful removal of Cherokee tribes from their homelands was unconstitutional. The Trail of Tears devastated many Cherokee people, families, and homes, and is still a debate whether the whole fiasco was unconstitutional. Through the years 1816 1840 Native American nations signed more than 40 different treaties that gave up more and more of the Natives homeland. When President Andrew Jackson came into power starting in 1829, Jackson made it his policy to remove the Eastern Native American tribes beyond the white settlements. Then in 1830 U.S. Congress endorsed Jackson s policy and in return passed the Indian Removal Act, forcing the indians to move west of the Mississippi. Between the years 1830 and 1850, around 100,000 Native Americans living between the Mississippi River and the United States were brutally treated and forced to move West. Davy Crockett who respected and was a scout under Andrew Jackson during the Creek War, was a congressman from Tennessee during Jackson s term and called the Indian Removal Act unjust. Jackson s Indian Removal policy would set the stage for Trail of Tears and the forceful removal of the Cherokee Nation. • 42. The Minster s Black Veil Essay In 1832, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote a chilling, dark tale about a Puritan society that exposed their hypocrisies called The Minster s Black Veil. The Puritans believed everyone was a sinner at birth. Because of this they were unsure who was saved or were damned, and it led to them to start judging others. In the story, Hawthorne starts to uncover the dark habits of the seemingly happy community; by giving their pastor a black veil. When the pastor refuses to remove veil, the town is struck with fear. The veil sends the whole community questioning their pastor s sanity, or if he committed a horrid sin. The story highlights the Puritans belief that some are saved while others are damned, therefore, they must separate the sinners and virtuous using the binaries light, dark, feminine, and masculine; which comes together in the form of the veil. From the beginning, Hawthorne sets up a drastic contrast between before and after the appearance of the veil. Hawthorne describes the town as bright and cheerful: Children with bright faces, tript merrily beside their parents, or mimicked a graver gait, in the conscious dignity of their Sunday clothes. Due to this phenomenon when Mr. Hooper starts wearing the black veil it is completely earth shattering to their community and leaves them wondering what he could have done to want to hide. The Puritans idealize Mr. Hooper and are uncertain if they can still do that. In, an attempt to improve the integration of available technology, educators and policymakers are reevaluating ways to incorporate technology into the grade level performance standards without separating the two educational standards (Collins Halverson, 2009). Presently, students and teachers have the ability to transmit information through third and fourth generation technological resources; yet, few take advantage of the endless educational possibilities (Francis Mishra, 2008; Marino, Sameshima, Beecher, 2009; Koehler Mishra, 2006; Sharples, 2007; Su Luan Teo, 2009). In spite of teachers negative attitudes towards changes and/ or technophobia, as the world changes, so must the classrooms, teachers, and delivery of knowledge to students (Hall, 2010; Su Luan Teo 2009; Ursavas Karal, 2009; Prensky, 2008). Not addressing teachers negative attitudes will invariably lead to continued challenges with incorporating classroom technology, especially with those teachers who focus lessons on memorization or note taking. Typically, in many American classrooms, teachers can be seen using the same traditional methodologies used a century or more ago with change resistant teachers instructing students seated in straight rows within the classroom (Sharples, 2007; Overbay, Patterson, Grable, 2009; Su Luan Teo 2009). On the other hand, researchers suggested that teaching in that manner should also include active learning where students take part in the instructional process (Strasser, 2006; Ryu Parsons, 2009). Clearly, based on research there is an effectual demand for teachers to focus lessons on learning ways to learn or research, by using technology to promote active learning and build students technological skills (Ara, 2009; Prensky, 2008; Ryu Parsons, 2009). This research will add to the body of literature of prior theoretical studies of classroom technology usage and Technology attitude scale (TAS) through assessing teacher s technology perspectives relationship between schools and ...
