Cartons Short Story
There were two choices: mop the kitchen, or dump out two thousand cartons of spoiled
macadamia nut milk. Sadly we didn t get the first choice. The boys decided to mop the kitchen,
which they probably didn t know how to do. We got to work, two girls opening boxes, two more
opening cartons, and another girl and myself were emptying the cartons into the sink. It wasn t
really that bad, only a faint smell of something bad, I thought we got the easy job. That is until
we kept working. Unloading box after box the smell grew stronger. It smelled worse than a
barnyard by the time we reached the bottom rack. We stopped for a minute to clean up, the
cartons were all broken and the garbage bags were leaking milk. Our shoes were dirty and soaked

I walked outside took a deep breath and ran back in. I tore the box open gagging as I did and
opened the first carton. I was already out of breath. My eyes were watering and my mouth went
dry, I quickly dumped out the first, then he second, the third, fourth, fifth, and all of them up to
the tenth. My body was shaking and I feared I might pass out from the awful smell, but I
continued, I only had two more cartons. They were horrible. The bottoms were all green and
flimsy, dripping milk all over the ground as I rushed them to the sink. The job was done, until I
turned around and saw the mess we left. I hauled the giant trash bags over my shoulder and
threw them up into the old dumpster in the back of the building. By the time I was coming back
in all the girls in my group had finished their break and came back in to help, but I was all done. I
mopped up the ground and the room lightened. Everyone seemed pretty happy that they didn t
have to clean up, I was pretty happy that I did clean up, I did the best job. Our day was done and
we were dismissed from our worksite. As we climbed into the van, and I closed the heavy door, I
thought so much, but most of all I thought about how our first day at work was and what the week

Developmental Stages And Theories Of Development
Developmental Stages and Theories
There are many areas in which an individual must develop to reach a mature level of adulthood.
Several theories and ideas have been created in an attempt to describe the process that in which
the individual passes to reach the desired levels of maturity. A few of those theories will be
addressed in better understanding the development of Precious on a psychological and social
plane. It can be assumed from observing Precious that she has been biologically developing normal
as she is experiencing growth and hormonal changes and dealing with acne and obesity.
Psychological
Erik Erikson, in seeking to understand and describe human development, developed a theory in
the early 1900s. His theory progressed to assume that humans must deal with or cope with the
conflicts of a certain stage of life before they can move on to a higher level of development
(Ashford et al, 2013). He organized eight different stages of psychosocial development from
infancy to old age. Each of the eight stages represents an internal conflict that will greatly define
who and individual becomes and the choices they will make later in life based on their
experiences within each stage. During the adolescent years, the conflict of interest in Erikson s
psychosocial theory deals with identity and identity confusion (Ashford et al, 2013). These years
are crucial in developing a youth s self esteem. Young people are highly self conscious. Their
perceptions of self

African Americans And African American Males
Currently, African Americans make up nearly one million of the total 2.3 million incarcerated
population. Nearly one in three African American males born today can expect to serve time in
prison during their lifetime (NAACP, 2015). A central issue in today s society is the rate of
criminalization of African Americanmales. There are many speculations on this topic; however, the
central one is when a crime is committed then there is time to be served. However, the time served
by African American males is disproportionate than that of Caucasian counterparts for the exact
same crime. The lack of concern that is presented over the clear overrepresentation of African
American males in the prison system is appalling.
The present analysis will offer a comprehensive summary of the different factors that are to be taken
into account of the stigmatization of African American male offenders. These factors include
treatment while incarcerated, family support, the impact of the incarceration on the family, and the
correlation between different social and contextual factors and incarceration.
African American Males Research shows that individuals of African American descent are
imprisoned more often than Caucasians. When it comes to prison, African American males seem
to be discriminated against. In 2001, a total of 16.6% of African American males were incarcerated
in a State or Federal prison (Bonczar, 2003). According to the Bonczar (2003), one in three African

Monologue About Raptors
Have I already told you about my past? A long time ago, i was a dreaded species by ALL ! But
not only my species was dreaded by all, but further... I was... RAPTOR PHTEVEN ! My name
was enough to fear all other raptors. But let me relate it from the beginning. I was, as I was
saying, a raptor. At that time, all the raptors were happy and peacefull : the biggest raptors were
eating up the smallest raptors, and the smallest raptors, sneaky as they were, working together to
trap biggest raptors. Therefore: reptilian routine. But with me, Raptor Phteven, the small raptors
weren t trying to trap me, oh no they weren t ! Because I was too badass for them. And the more
astonishing being that unlike the other raptors, I wasn t eating the small raptors. I was stealing the

humans may come to observe us. So first, our private space, when we had the chance to benefit
from one, were way to small. And secundo (see how mean they were with us): the humans fed
me with small raptors they judged to ugly to expose in the parc ! After a time, having no choice

Why I Want To Pursue A Career In Radiation Oncology
I would like to be considered for the D.Phil. position in Radiation Oncology at the University of
Oxford and hope to demonstrate my ability to excel in this position. I am hard working and
extremely keen to pursue a career in science and would be well suited to undertake a D.Phil. in the
field of Radiation Oncology. I am clinically qualified as my undergraduate was in Medicineand
Surgery, following my graduation I chose to pursue a career in cancersciences so I joined university
of Glasgow (MSc Cancer sciences). My undergraduate study was composed of two parts, the first
three years were dedicated to basic medical sciences while the latter three years were clinically
oriented as the teaching was conducted in a variety of supervised inpatient and outpatient settings.

on the health system. Therefore, more researches into the different fields of oncology are urgently
needed to enhance the outcome of treatment. My interest in perusing a research degree in the field
of Radiation Oncology is driven by my belief that research into Radiation oncology is a cornerstone
in improving patients outcomes, for example, understanding the molecular and cellular response to
radiotherapy, will help to identify novel targets that can be combined with radiotherapy to improve
treatment outcome. Unfortunately, Jordan is missing this opportunity despite the availability of
sufficient funding and infrastructure, although the reason behind this is most likely to be
multifactorial, I think one of the critical reasons would be the lack of researchers in this

The Essentials Of A Good Education By Diane Ravitch
The Essentials of a Good Education by Diane Ravitch is about the argument on the importance of
mathematics and literature. One side argues that students can be successful in life with test
proficient in only mathematics and literature; while, the other side claims that mathematics and
literature are important, but are not enough for one to find what they are good at. While both sides
have a point, I am going to analyze the both sides of the argument. I agree with Ravitch s side of
the argument. While both mathematics and literature are important, I believe that it is crucial to
branch out from those so that we can all find our own passion. The issue is that it is believed that
only the subjects of mathematics and reading are important to one s

Identify the four major sociological theoretical paradigms. For each, what are the key tenets? How
does each explain how society works? Functionalist Perspectives also known as Structural
Functional Paradigm The sociological approach that views society as a stable, orderly system.
According to this perspective, a society is composed of interrelated parts, each of which serves a
function and (ideally) contributes to the overall stability of the society. Societies develop social
structures, or institutions that persist because they play a part in helping society survive. These
institutions include the family, education, government, religion, and the economy. If anything

A symbol is anything that meaningfully represents something else (Kendall, 01/2014, p. 28).
Post Modernism Perspective s According to postmodern perspectives, existing theories have
been unsuccessful in explaining social life in contemporary societies that are characterized by
post industrialization, consumerism, and global communications (Kendall, 01/2014, p. 29).
Postmodern theories are based on the assumption that the rapid social change that occurs as
societies move from modern to postmodern (or postindustrial) conditions has a harmful effect
on people. One evident change is the significant decline in the influence of social institutions
such as the family, religion, and education on people s lives. Those who live in postmodern
societies typically pursue individual freedom and do not want the structural constraints that are
imposed by social institutions (Kendall, 01/2014, p. 29). Postmodern (or postindustrial )
societies are characterized by an information explosion and an economy in which large numbers
of people either provide or apply information, or they are employed in professional occupations
(such as lawyers and physicians) or service jobs (such as fast food servers and health care workers).

Grief is an inner sense of loss, feeling of emptiness and sadness every human being experience at
some point of life and each person feels and handles it differently. But there are some common
stages of grief which starts from recognizing a loss to the final acceptance. It is not necessary that
grief should occur after the deathof a beloved one. Griefis the multifaceted response to death and
losses of all kinds, including emotional (affective), psychological (cognitive and behavioral),
social, and physical reactions (Stroebe, Hansson, Stroebe, Schut, 2001). Grief is a healthy

The Irish Culture And The Person I Interviewed
Ireland is a country that is rich in culture, traditions, and faith. This country has struggled with over
time with famine, religious tension, and even freedom. Many individuals immigrated to America
in search of a better life. The person I chose to interview family came over to the United States
when Ireland was struggling with famine. They came over on a boat through New York and
changed there name to make it more American. For this paper I will further discuss the Irish culture
and the person I interviewed.
Description of the Person and Cultural Heritage
For a short time in Ireland many were faced with a hard decision due to the struggling with
starvation in a time of famine. With this hardship many made the difficult choice to leave their
country and seek refuge in the United States. The individual that I interview had family that lived in
County Cork, Ireland and they decided to make the journey to the United States in hopes of a
better life. Her Grandparents came to the United States through New York and changed their last
name by dropping the prefix to make it more American. They moved to Cleveland and her
grandfather was able to find work at chief Boyardee to support his family. Many traditions have
been passed down from generation to generation. Celebration St. Patrick s day was always an
important day for this family. This was a time to eat traditional Irish food, music, and Irish folk
dancing. The catholic faith is very important aspect of this

Steve Pollock Ecology Summary
Ecology is a non fiction text written by Steve Pollock, which centres around the subject on the
natural state of our earth. This book discusses and explores on the various topics of our ecosystem,
what it is and the different aspects in our ecosystem such as: population, trophic level, predation,
Eco life, relationships between the living organisms, and human impact of the environment The
book first introduces the subject of ecology, and gives a brief overview on what it consists of.
According the definition offered by the text ecology is the study of living thing in their natural
state. The book also explains what the ecosystem is, and what is included in it. An ecosystem
contains living and non living organisms which feed, reproduce, and interact in the same
environment. An ecosystem is made up of various communities which are formed when different
populations of different species co exist in the same area. Many of the relationships in nature can be
either categorized as mutalistic or commensalistic. The writing illustrates that a mutualistic
relationship is when both animals benefit from the interaction with one another. The clown fish and
the sea anemone are a great example if mutalistic symbiosis relationship. The sea anemone protects
the clown fish from predators by using it s tentacles, while the sea clown fish provides the sea
anemone scrapes of food that has fallen from it s self. A commesnalistic is when one animal has the
upper hand or benefits from the interaction.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis Of The Pardoner
My initial reaction to the work was one on astonishment. Everything that the Pardoner was
saying and describing reminded me of the Evangelists of today of who travel from town to town
and setup great big tents just to steal the money from good hard working people from the way the
Pardoner has the same sermon practiced and rehearsed. Upon first reading, I have read this poem
more than a few times, I jotted down some words that I had never heard of before, those being;
Cuckold, Avarice, and Jakes.
Geoffrey Chaucer lived between 1340 and 1400 in London England. The son of a Sommelier of
sorts, his family made their money from the selling and buying of wine. In his teens Chaucer went
to fight in the hundred years war during he was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In every small village that he visits his sermon topic is always the same: greed is the root of evil.
The Pardoner always preaches about greed, the same sin that he admits to possessing. Although the
Pardoner himself is guilty of Greed, he warns people about the dangers of covetousness through
examples from history and the Bible. However, the Pardoner himself states For I ll have money,
wool, and cheese, and wheat, though given by the poorest serving lad, or by the poorest widow in
the place meaning that he would rather take from the starving and destitute than give up his
creature comforts.
In Flanders, there were three young hooligans who loved to amuse themselves by gambling, being
rambunctious and drinking. The Pardoner goes into a speech of criticism about their sinful lives.
Finally, after his long speech, the Pardoner reflects back onto the three young hooligans, who are
drinking at the tavern when they hear the church bell signaling the sound of a passing coffin. A
servant tells the group of travelers that the dead man was a friend of the three who had been
stabbed in the night by a thief called Death . The young hooligans declare that they will find and
kill the thief Death. They pledge to each other as brothers in their endeavor.

Descent From The Cross Analysis
Group 1, Question A
Catalina s masculine behaviors in her autobiography demonstrates how gender was socially
constructed in both Europe and America during the colonial era. One scene in particular is,
Meanwhile, some boys noticed me and surrounded me until, annoyed, I picked up some rocks
and injured one of them (I don t know where because I didn t see) They arrested me and kept me
in jail for one long month until he healed and they released me, with a little money remaining after
my expenses (2). In this scene she stands her own ground against a group of men with violence
rather than submitting to them or running away. Women during this era were not expected to
defend themselves or fight back. That is more acceptable action for men to perform. Her violent
behavior put her in jail not because she is unjust for defending herself, but because she struck a
man and it was not socially acceptable for a woman to do so. During this era women were not
scene to act violently or hit men because it was not a norm or an action women for women to do.

Binge Drinking and College Students
Binge Drinking
Binge Drinking is a problem for college students who are expose to an unlimited access of alcohol
for the first time ever. Studies have found that an individual s critical thinking ability is impaired
because of alcohol consumption. Binge drinking means drinking so much within about 2 hours that
blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels reach 0.08g/dl. As the CDC reports One in six U.S.
adults binge drinks about four times a month, consuming about eight drinks per binge . Alcohol
companies continue to make money from U.S adults who are dependent on alcohol for social
interaction. The CDC also informs us that The prevalence of binge drinking among men is twice
the prevalence among women it might be due to the fact the men are influenced by their peers
who are more likely to drinking publicly as opposed to women who are more reserved. The
symptoms of binge drinker include drinking for fun, drinking quickly and being dependent on the

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Case Study
tion and background information
The first consideration of case study research method emerged around 1900, mostly within the
discipline of anthropology. From early accounts of journeys, systematic investigations of other
cultures in the form of field studies emerged, with participant observation as the predominant
method of data collection. Another source of case study methodology has been provided by
descriptions of individuals within medicine, social work and psychology, often called case work or
case history . The first generation of case studies culminated in the Chicago school of sociology, in
which the anthropologist s field study method was practised on contemporary society in the

common sense suggests we should not place too much weight on any one case, no matter how
crucial it appears to be. Second, the crucial case design assumes a narrow theory testing role for
case studies, which, as we have suggested, is often inappropriate for comparative politics. Third,
crucial case studies involve a risky bet on the results. If the findings run counter to expectations,
we have learned nothing at all of significance beyond the case. Suppose Michels has discovered,
contrary to his expectations, that socialist parties were properly democratic after all. Then he
would have been criticized for producing an obvious finding. When the results come out wrong ,

The War Of 1812 Was A Major Part Of History
The War of 1812 was a major part of history in America s battle to become independent. This was
the United States Second War for Independence from the British. After the War of 1812 there were
major consequences that would change the lives of the Americans forever. Both industry and
foreign relations were heavily impacted after the war. Industry flourished with new technology, the
idea of interchangeable parts and the cotton gin. The cotton gin saved valuable time and
interchangeable parts made mass manufacturing easier for things like guns and shoes. Foreign
relations also improved with the Monroe Doctrine in 1823 and the Manifest Destiny in 1840. (Tell
me how briefly, so one brief example each) In the 1800 s the United Stateseconomy was thriving
due to an increase in domestic trade and mass manufacturing, while foreign relations improved, and
a friendship with Great Britain was made.
Prior to the War of 1812 America attempted to remain neutral regarding the war between Great
Britain and France. George Washington, who was president at the time, even created the Neutrality
Proclamation in an effort to keep the young nation out of conflicts abroad. However, persistent
harassment from Great Britain and France at sea, including trade restrictions and impressment,
caused America s neutrality to be threatened. Both countries did this by blockading ports of trade
and by creating commercial sanctions. Foreign trade had been booming prior to the war for the

Crime Is The Strongest Factor Of Criminology
Criminal violations are a major issue in today s society; obviously there will be wrongdoings
whether one wants to believe it or not. In any case, does that imply that individuals are all bound to
perpetrate wrongdoings in the event that they are related to a criminal, in someway? Although there
continues to be a multitude of beings that believe crimeis biologically determined, no human s are
exactly alike in decisions; Hence criminal behaviors are not biologically determined. By
recognizing that human behavior is influenced by many factors, by refuting counterarguments that

Due to this, human s are not born greedy entrepreneurs just like how one will not be born a
disgraceful sinner. One is not born to commit white collar crimes or to commit murder. Nevertheless,
the environment may influence a murderer, yet this all revolves around free will not genetics.
There is no doubt that insidiousness develops from the non appearance of sympathy as a mere
child. Biology conducts the biological qualities that a tyke needs to become a killer . However,
there is a tremendous contrast between the way someone is raised and their biological qualities.
The saying, like father, like son, or like mother, like daughter (Monk pg 16) according to experts
means that, criminal traits must be genetic since so many criminals have relatives who are also
criminals (Monk pg 16). Somewhere along the lines in families one has relatives who have done
wrongdoings whether it be something detestable or something small, so the explanation of
criminals being genetic is absolutely obscure. Experts also argue that wrongdoers, attribute
biologically flawed genes, physiological deficiencies, and other inherited defects (Monk pg 16).

Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow Essay
Comparing Tim Burton s Sleepy Hollow with Washington Irving s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
In examining Washington Irving s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow alongside Tim Burton s film
adaption of the story, titled Sleepy Hollow, a number of fascinating similarities and differences
emerge. Though elements of the characters and settings of Burton s film borrow heavily from
Irving s text, the overall structuring of the film is significantly different, and representations of
various elements are crucially re imagined. Tim Burton s Sleepy Hollow was released on November
19, 1999, a few months before the new millennium. Set in 1799, Burton s film modifies the 1790
date that Irving s text is set in, showing an acute concern with ... Show more content on

There is no narrator at all in Burton s film, and the action that the characters experience is
firsthand, not retrospective or omniscient. Such a move takes away from the folk legend
element of the story, transforming it into a supernatural spectacle for on the screen instead of a
possibly supernatural tale for around the fireplace. The ways in which Irving and Burton code
the city and the country in their respective productions is similarly impacted by the periods in
which each man was working. Irving s Sleepy Hollow emphasizes local culture and the power of
myth making within these cultures. In Irving s town of Sleepy Hollow, the tale of the headless
horseman reigns, but does not extend outside of the local realm, and does not necessarily
physically manifest: when Ichabod leaves for the city at the end of the narrative, the horseman does
not follow him. However, in Burton s adaption, the tale of the headless horseman is not merely
local folklore, but becomes elevated to the level of metropolitan news through the literal act of
murder instead of the mere legend of murder. Crime, then, elevates the cultural status of the
horseman from local legend to state wide murder suspect. Irving s story, noted by scholars such as
Daniel Hoffmann for its powerful interpretation of local myth and mythic tropes, is transported into
the realm of the metropolitan through the re characterization of New York as

multilevel framework in which employee service performance was examined as a joint function of
employee individual characteristics and service environment characteristics. In work addressing
organizational factors, a common theme is that if an organization values service and establishes
practices that facilitate and reward excellent service, a Climate for service is likely to emerge.
Examining one level at a time prevents one from knowing whether factors at one level remain
important in explaining service performance after factors at the other level are accounted... Show

The Revenge Tragedy Of Hamlet Essay
Issara Butt
Professor Abbott
English 102
November 30, 2016
The Revenge Tragedy of Hamlet Revenge tragedies share some common characteristics of the
play Hamlet which classify them in the group of many great stories such as The Spanish
Tragedy, and King Lear. A vengeful ghost, a play within a play, and the main character who
seeks revenge on an opponent and murdered (KAY). At some point in life many of us feel the
need to seek revenge and never actually act upon it, but what if we did? What would be the
consequences and what would life be like afterwards. The thoughts we have of this makes the
stories of revenge tragedies exciting and intriguing. They are our thoughts written on paper and into
a story making as if what we think is actually happening. In the time of Shakespearean writing,
things would have gone slightly different. The play Hamlet, is a prime example of a revenge
tragedy in its refined state of written speech. Hamlet is a revenge tragedy for many reasons, not
only that but it is the most written, re enacted, and read play of all time (TUMIEL). The multiple
plots of revenge, murders, and ghost appearances makes Hamlet the leading play of revenge
tragedies and most studied currently in academic curriculums. It is believed to be that William
Shakespeare s Hamlet was based off of Thomas Kyd s story, Ur Hamlet (MABILLARD). Although
Ur Hamlet was a rough and uncut version of a revenge tragedy and needed further developing, but
Shakespeare s Hamlet is well refined,

Hatice Ezberk
The article by Hatice Ezberk The Function of Fantasy as a subversive Genre in Literature examines
the idea of how fantastic literature can bring out an emphasis on how the world transforms through
the writers eyes. As fantasy literature grows it can become unclear as to what social norms the
literature is trying to juxtapose. Ezberk argues that trying to categorize fantasyliterature is a
rebellious act as the subgenre s become too specific and can at times deceive the reader by
delivering functions it is not meant to deliver. Ezberk argues through other works by establishing
that the concept of realism is not valid in fantasy literature as it becomes too vague. Instead
fantasy literature takes the reader away from a world they know and into a world where it is heart
desire to be. The concept of subversive literature is that it gives a reader encouragement to think

Cholelera Research Paper
Cholera is a disease characterized by diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and dehydration (MayoClinic,
2017). An outbreak of the disease was seen in England in the early 1800 s. The system for
treating all ailments was based off of humoral pathology. Doctors analyzed patients based on the
idea that our bodies have four important fluids or humors blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow
bile. (O Neil, 2007). If one is out of balance, they would try to counteract it. The lack of knowledge
and equipment allowed cholerato remain a mystery to the people of England. Another lack of
knowledge was how disease spreads. At the time, the Miasma Theory was accepted, this stated that
diseases were gotten by taking in toxic air . This simply was not logical.... Show more content on

Things change with new technology and findings. It is important for scientists to take current
theories and build off of them, or refute them with something that is more true than the last. Some
things science might never be able to fully understand, and scientists need to accept this and use it
to their advantage. John Snow understood that the Miasma Theory, while accepted by all at the
time, might not be necessarily true. He investigated and with the introduction of anesthesia he was
able to further understand the mode of communication of diseases. The Miasma Theory is partially
true, but for ways other than intended. Instead of toxic air diseases can be spread through the air if
the microorganism that causes it is airborne. Cholera, is a microorganism that is communicable

In his comparison he has shown how the adults are so like these children running to and fro
without any supervision. Though, the comparison may seem absurd initially, but starts to make
sense as we move forward. Golding has stick to has ideology throughout the novel without any
trace of humour. Most of the satires presented in the novel are dark and bitter in their own way.
The first and the foremost satire is on civilization. In this era of moving forward with civilization
and civilized people, the people still think of going to war. He highlights the destruction, evil
and fear in human mind. During the start of the novel we see the boys end up in an uninhabited
island. The reason of the plane crash remains unknown. The probable reason being the effect of
World War II. Mostly it is a political satire. Both Ralph and Jack symbolize leadership. While
most the leaders would related themselves to the Ralph and not the hated Jack, but the twist
remains that it Jack who is the actual leader. This comparison has been made to mock the leaders
of the world. Ralph the kind of person how we would want our leaders to actually be. This
comparison reflects the difference between our dreams and ideals and the reality really is. People

Triple Alliance And Triple Entente During World War I
In the beginning of the 20th century, many changes where to take place that would ultimately
determine the alliances commonly known as the Triple Alliance and Triple Entente during World
War I. In 1904, the Russo Japanese War began. This war ended with a defeat for Russia, which
was humiliating, but did encourage the Russian Empire to focus on the Balkans, an area that would
play more dominate roles in World War I( 10 Events that Led to War One 1). Their newfound
interest in this area forced them to reassert themselves later, during the Bosnia Annexation Crisis
(Trueman 1). Over the years, Germany began to grow as an empire and an extremely militaristic
power (Tonge 1). The German s power created a naval rivalry between themselves and Britain.

A Painted House Farewell To Manzanar Analysis
A Painted House and Farewell to Manzanar had many conflicts throughout the story. The main
characters had to wrestle internal and external conflicts. Both of the main characters had similar
struggles. At a very young age both Luke and Jeanne had to keep all of their feelings and secretes in.
In A Painted House luke had to keep a lot of secrets in order to keep his familys cotton fields from
not being picked. One of them was when he lied about Hank not killing one of the Sisco brothers.
Another huge secret that he didn t tell anyone but his grandpa at the end of the story is that
cowboy killed Hank. He didn t want to tell anyone, both of these secrets because otherwise they

Feudalism During The Middle Ages
Feudalism is the military, social, and political system of the Middle Ages based on protective
alliances and land holding. The word comes from the Latin word feudum which means fief, an
estate of land. The feudal system was based off of the obligations and rights of people living
during the time. Landowners, also known as lords, gave their land in exchange for military
protection and other services. This granted land was called a fief, meanwhile, the person receiving
it was called a vassal. Feudalismnot only depended but also functioned on the control of land.
Without this two sided bargain feudalism would not become successful during the Middle Ages.
The feudal society was structured much like a pyramid. At the very top and peak, was the

It’S Said That The Universe Will Tend To Move Toward A
It s said that the universe will tend to move toward a state with a higher entropy. Every gas
molecules will spontaneously diffuse to fill a container which will increase the overall entropy of
the universe. Evolution is then can be thought to follow this same basic principle. Nature has
given every species living in it an indefinite amount of time which allows them to evolve. Ergo, for
over three billion years, some of the single cell organisms had been successfully evolving into the
numerous multicellular organisms that we know of today, us included; and some, who were not
able to improve within the given time, would be exterminated (Darwin 120). But, what is it that she

Although this is not a closed circuit, some energy is dissipated, some is added; but it is a
sustained circuit (Leopold 43). This similar instance was also explained in Darwin s theory as
the struggle for life for every species. In Darwinian theory, the struggle for life does not only
represent the species struggle to survive, but it also reflected on the idea that each individual is
interdependent with one another. A mistletoe seedling, for example, is said to struggle with each
other if they grow close to one another. And if a mistletoes is disseminated by birds, its
existence [now] depends on birds (Darwin 109). The struggle for existence that Darwin explain is
then similar to the flow of energy explained by Leopold. The seed that is disseminated by birds
becomes the container for the transfer of the energy from the sun. That energy would then be
dissipated as work for the bird to fly from one place to another, if not the energy would be
transferred to yet another organism. Thus, this seems as if evolution acts on every species with the
thought of a certain ethics that the species must followed which formed a strict system. Further
continuation of the theory comes from their explanation about the goal of evolution to elaborate
and diversify the biota

Student s Choice Of How They Spend Their Leisure Time...
Introduction: For many Elon students, the pressure and stress caused by a heavy course load can
be very detrimental to their health. Whether it be a lab report, final project, or cumulative test,
Elon students at one point or another will find themselves stressing out and in need to unwind. In
today s world, there are many options that allow students to unwind, taking a walk, playing video
games, or napping to name a few. These activities have nothing to do with your school work.
However, will they make an impact on your performance in the classroom? For my paper topic, I

Since the rise of streaming services like Netflix, children and young adults today find themselves
picking up books less and looking at screens more. Watching TV at a young age has often been
connected to poor performance on standardized tests. This includes one study which found that
Californian third graders who had televisions in their bedroom, watched more TV and in turn,
performed worse on standardized tests than those who did not (Gosline).
Some believe students who spend more time on video games instead of reading perform poorly
in school. This includes a group of schools in Michigan. Their after school program named, Kids
Learning in Computer Klubhouses! gave students a place to go after school to surf the web and
play video games. The program attracted students who, [miss] a lot of school and who [aren t]
particularly successful according to one adult coordinator (Girod). However, both a 2000 and 1997
study found a small correlation between amount of time spent playing video games and GPA
suggesting that while the program may have attracted those who do not perform well, their
performance may have been caused by other factors (Craton).
Napping is also an option for some students. Given that many find themselves up until the odd hours
in the morning, catching up on sleep can become a priority when given free time. Taking a nap
immediately after a lecture was shown to improve cognitive memory and in turn, standardized test
scores, according to one study

What Are The Similarities Between Baroque And Baroque Eras
Introduction
European design has evolved over the centuries from the Renaissance era of the 15th century to
Baroque era of the 16th century right through to the Rococo era of the late 1700 s. Even though the
style might have changed, some elements can be traced across all three periods.
This essay will explore the similarities and differences in the aforementioned eras by singling out 4
different examples from these eras and how these influenced or affected the society and patrons
who commissioned these artworks at that time.
Emphasis will be placed on specific examples that best demonstrate the style of each era. The
image examples used in this essay are firstly the ceiling of the Sistine chapel and the bronze David

After the peak of the Renaissance era of 1600 Rome, there was a move towards a style that was
more dramatic and celebrated the church and the elite. This style melodramatically reaffirmed the
emotional depths of the catholic faith and glorified both the church and monarch (History of Art,
1933:284). Baroque is distinguished by the grander sense of space in architecture, intense emotion
and movement in painting and sculpture. Opulence and grandeur is often displayed in the
ostentatious interiors homes of the elite and the church was highly decorated.
Some similarities between Baroque and Renaissance eras, is the strong use of light and shade to
create depth and realism.
The word Baroque derives from the Portuguese word barocco which seems to imply an irregularly
shaped or imperfect pearl. Which is quite ironic since Baroque design was anything but imperfect.
Rococo
The style of the Rococo period can be characterised as being playful and asymmetrical as opposed
to that of Baroque. Though there are similarities between the two stylistic periods, Rococo design
is more ornate and motifs usually resemble shells and stones and the intricate designs are often
gilded with gold and other precious metals. The colour palette is muted and emphasis is placed on
the design rather than the

Power In Crime And Punishment Crime And Punishment By...
According to Foucault, power does not belong to the individual, but to the system, to the
institution. In his essay on Discipline and Punish, Foucault presents his idea of the panopticon
mechanism, a mechanism in which visibility is a trap. With little importance over the actual
individual in the role of the observer or of the observed, the object of the system is total power
over the observed. Due to the unique shape of the panopticon, there are no corners and thus no
blind spots for the observed to hide in. The private space is replaced by the public one.
Furthermore, as final evidence of total control, the observed never knows for sure if they are being
watched or not, as they can t see the observer (Foucault 200 205). Foucault further argues that this
system is followed by any government institution, placing the society under permanent observation.
Individuals might try to evade the system, but achieving liberation and freedom is not something
that anyone could do. Dostoevsky s famous novel, Crime and... Show more content on

Mother Teresa: The Life and Dignity of the Human Person Life and dignity of a human person is
the basis for all Catholic Social Teaching. Mother Teresa embodied this statement throughout her
entire life as she served the poorest of the poor throughout the world. Mother Teresa built schools to
teach, hospitals to cure, orphanages to love, and hospice homes to comfort. All of these projects
were based on the Catholic Church s proclamation human life is sacred and the dignity of the
human person is the foundation of society. ( ) By establishing Missionaries of Charity in 1948,
which served society s poor and marginalized, Mother Teresa influenced world leaders by living
the social teachings of the Catholic Church. Mother Teresa grew up in a very loving family that
was committed to their Catholic faith. Her mother always told her children that they should never
eat a bite of food without sharing it with another. Mother Teresa recalls that her mother often
invited the poor of the their town to come and dine with her family. Her mother s commitment to
the needy was deep rooted. She didn t waver from this commitment even after her husband died
leaving her with three young children including Teresa, who was only eight years old. This family
commitment to serve among many experiences in her homeland of Macedonia is what set the
stage for Mother Teresa s life of charity. In

The Abortion Controversy Many outsiders see the United States as a place of peace and harmony.
But for those who live within it, know that it is the complete opposite. The United States has

Although some are more important than others doesn t mean the small issues should go unnoticed.
Abortion, the termination of pregnancyis considered a problem by many but also reflected as

If you know that you are not financially stable or even wanting a baby protect yourself as much
as possible. Just like a man who robs a bank knows there is a chance of him going to jail, females
need to realize that when having sex there is a chance she may become pregnant. So now all that
s left to ask is, what is the difference between me murdering for respect and murdering just
because I can or because I didn t do what was right? Adults as well as teenagers need to become
more aware of the consequences that come along with sex. If you are old enough to lie in the bed,
be able to make it. The solution I propose is to limit abortion. For example, a woman should only be
given the option of abortion only when they have been raped or exposed to incest. Rape and
incest often leave women severely hurt or in worst case scenarios pregnant. A female as well as
her child should not have to go through life wondering where they came from or even who. When
studies were taken only one percent of all women who proceeded to get the procedure done was
due to rape or incest. A woman other than these circumstances should be punished just as badly as
someone who has murdered another. Every abortion is just another heart that has stopped, two more
eyes that will never see, two hands that will never touch, two more legs that will never run, and

Peopl My Leadership Model (Mbti)
Week one into this course has been a defining moment in my life. It sets the stage into life as a
more consciously self aware and emotionally intelligent being, and the awareness of others as
equally emotional beings whether or not these others are self aware or not. In it, the MBTI were
taught to which I as at then, tentatively identify my preference as one that is inclined to
Introversion, iNtuition, Feeling and Perceiving (INFP).
Now, I can say with certainty, in the light of what I have learned thus far that I am a
compassionate leader who wants the best out of my followers by minimizing their threat responses.
I am relatively transparent, love my relative importance in comparison to others and love to have
autonomy. Because, I naturally gravitated towards non violent communication base on my MBTI
preference, I tend to extend empathy in my dealing with people and give them the preferences with
which I would like to be given.
This have a side effect, which in my experience appears to paint me as a weak leader who carries

Analyzing The Film Raiders Of The Lost Ark
This was my first time watching Raiders of the Lost Ark let alone any Indiana Jones movie. It
took a hill to finally find the film online but when I did i was exited to see the film, every website
I went was giving it 9/10 ratings or 5/5 I don t recall seeing anything less then a 4 or 9. Then after
seeing Stephen Spielberg directed and George Lucas helped write the film I knew there was
going to be thrill, action, comedy and everything else it takes to make a Great film. The film
starts by introducing Dr. Henry leading an exploration team through a thick jungle of South
America, as he comes to a stop one of the group members pulls out a gun behind him, Dr. Henry

Everyone is then killed leaving Jones and Marion free but exhausted from the high energy. The
movie then skips to a couple weeks later where Jones is taking to the two Army officers that sent
him on the expedition, they talk about the powers the Ark has and understand whats at stake.
They then show the Ark stored in a government warehouse and is the last scene of the film. The
movie was very well written it had me on the edge of my seat with all the action going on. It was
also funny in ironic way how things would end up for Jones and also added humor to the action
film. The movie was generally not dark unless they were in a car or spooky place, the action

The Contributions Of Louis Pasteur
Louis Pasteur was a biologist and a French chemist who made major contributions to chemistry,
medicine and industry. He is famous for his germ theory and he is also famous for the
development of vaccines. He is also famous for the food preparing process known as pasteurization.
Personal Biography
Louis Pasteur born on December 27, 1822, in Dole, France. He grew up in the town of Arbois.
His father, Jean Joseph Pasteur was a tanner and a sergeant major. Since his father was decorated
with the Legion of Honor during the Napoleonic Wars, strong patriotism was instilled in Louis
when he was young. This became an important part of his character later on. In his early school
years, he was an average student but he was gifted in drawing and ... Show more content on

The other children died of typhoid. But it was this tragedy of losing his children that inspired
Louis Pasteur to try to discover cures for diseases like the typhoid. He was affected very deeply
over his loss and that is what gave him the inspiration to do something for incurable diseases.
Scientific Biography
In 1854 he was a chemistry professor at the university of Lille, and it was here where he started
working with the germ theory. Although he did not invent the germ theory, he was able to further
develop it by demonstrating that bacteria was responsible for souring wine, beer and milk.
People in those days believed that germs just popped out of nowhere but Pasteur proved
otherwise. Through his experiments he showed that bacteria did not just appear but it came from
other living things. It was this that earned him the nickname Father of the Germ Theory. Using his
knowledge of germs he went on to invent pasteurization. He found that boiling and then cooling
liquid could remove bacteria. Not only will this kill all the bacteria making the beverages safer to
drink, it also made them last longer. Pasteur kept learning about bacteria and he started to think that
it had something to do with why humans get diseases. In 1865, Louis Pasteur helped save the silk
industry. He investigated why silkworms were getting a disease, which was threatening the French
silk market. He proved that microbes were attacking the healthy silkworm eggs and he said if the

New England and Southern Colonies Essay example
Both the New England colonies and the Southern colonies seemed as though they might be the
same. They both started out with the majority of people being from England, they were both in the
New World, and they were both ruled by England but, as time went on this theory was proven
wrong. The New England colonies and the Southern colonies had many common characteristics but
these two regions were very different geographically, politically, and socially. Geographically the
New England colonies were the states of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New
Hampshire; the Southern colonies were Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina, North Carolina, and
Georgia. These two regions were on opposite sides of America so naturally, they had... Show more

In New England, however, because of the lack of need for labor there were very few black
slaves and everyone was relatively equal. A large difference between New England and the
Southern colonies is that when people moved to the New England regions many of them came
in communities and families. In the South because of the many individuals, there was a shortage
of women and therefore population did not grow as quickly. This expansion of cities in the New
England colonies led to the founding of primary and secondary schools for education. Harvard
College in Massachusetts was founded eighty six years before the first college in Virginia. In the
South, the few and spread out cities led to a slow development of schools and many children had
tutors instead of attending school. These two very different social structures developed the
character of the regions. As these colonies began to grow there became a need for a government
and the two regions approached this in different ways. The Southern colonies prohibited taxes
unless they were enforced by the grand assembly while New Englanders kept the right to tax
locally whenever the need came. Also, the New England colonies placed much of their emphasis on
town meetings. These meeting were attended by white males and they demonstrated the democracy
that is seen in today s United States. In the Southern colonies the people were less enthusiastic
about democracy and many of them were ruled by colonial

Running head: The Benefits and Consequences of the Alberta Tar Sands 1 The Benefits and
Consequences of the Alberta Tar Sands Darlene Kittleson Environmental Science 101 10 08 14
Abstract 2 Our insatiable need for oil has lead us down an unsavory pathway looking for it. The
Alberta Tar Sands, an economic boom and an environmental disaster, is just one of those places.
Once thought of as too intrusive and destructive on the land, has made way for one of the largest
tar sands reserves of this century. Harvesting the tar sands will fuel our thirst for oil for many
years. Canada and America will both reap the benefits and the consequences of that oil. Running
head: The Benefits and Consequences of the Alberta Tar Sands 3 The Alberta Tar Sands is one of
the best and worst oil finds of the 21st century. Best in the fact that Canada becomes a big player in

Petroleum, The Most Valuable Commodities
Crude oil, also known as petroleum, is among the most valuable commodities in the world. It is
vital to many industries, accounting for just over thirty three percent of the world s energy supply.
Crude oil is a naturally occurring substance that can be refined into several products, including
diesel fuel, motor oil, and gasoline, among others. Though prices of crude oil in years passed were
typically high, they fluctuate daily in response to a host of factors, including world wide rates of
production and consumption, environmental issues, overall global economic health, and
sociopolitical developments in other nations that purchase oil. These are, furthermore, factors over
which neither government nor industry have control. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The potential changes that BP should have been scanning for include technological and
legislative changes, changes in the global economy, and changes in the physical environment. BP
should have been aware, for example of any changes or trends in technology. Successful
monitoring is then determined by a company s ability to accurately interpret the data collected
from scanning. In this example, if BP had detected a technological change or trend, it would be
important for them to have an understanding of exactly what the technology is and what it is
capable of. Next, the company must be able to project how the detected changes and trends will
impact business. A new technology could be a potential opportunity for BP or a threat if
implemented by a competitor. And finally, once the changes and trends have been identified, it is
important for the firm to determine the significance and timing of the event. With a change in
technology, BP would need to assess whether or not implementation would give them a
competitive advantage. The threat of new entrants to the industry in the context of the BP oil spill
was likely pretty low. Aside from the traditional challenges of entering an industry as a new
comer, new offshore leases were placed on hold, and a moratorium subsequently placed on
offshore drilling below 500 feet by the federal government. This would have deterred any new

Unit 4 Live Presentation Analysis
For my unit 4 Live Presentation, I chose a topic dear to my heart and something that I take a
very high interest in. In this reflective essay, I will be sharing with you my experiences in a
behind the scenes look of my presentation. I will explain my process of preparation including how
I picked my topic, the purpose, resources and my outline. I will also be sharing the creation of my
visuals; what software I used and how my presentationlooked. As well as, how I felt in the actual
live recording of my presentation. During this analyzation, I too will be showing myself areas I

My volume and background noise was perfect and I made sure to try and keep a smile in my
voice to try and mask my nervousness! Based on the feedback of my audience, I do believe that
my message was received loud and clear on the presentation. Also, the questions from the others
made me feel like they thought what I was saying was very interesting. My conclusion, in my
opinion, was very soft and wasn t as strong as it needed to be. I tried to be sure that I left my
audience with something to think about and try and maybe go on a scavenger hunt in their
daily lives to find things that may be a skill I did not list. As with everything, I need
improvement in a few areas. The use of the word um needs to be nonexistent! Maybe that was
my anxiety and nervousness coming out? Either way, I need to eliminate the word from my
vocabulary especially when presenting. Also, with my tone of voice, in a few sections, sounded
like I was reading off paper. Even if I was those few times, I need to change how I read and my tone
when reading. My storylines were off the topic in one section, so I need to be able to go over my
presentation and outline a few times before going live to make sure I am saying everything I want to

Eraserhead
Eraserhead is a 1977 surreal, psychological horror film written and directed by david lynch. It
stars jack nance and charlotte stewart...... Eraserhead tells the story of henry, a depressed,
isolated man who after being invited to his girlfriend marys home for dinner is informed that she
has given birth to a baby. Henry and mary get married and soon after his wife leaves him, leaving
him to care for his horribly mutated offspring, all the while henry has bizare dreams and visions.
Eraserhead is shot entirley in black and white, against a bleak, post industrial landscape. The lack
of color and any live vegitation heightens the feeling of desolation in the world that henry inhabits.

The chacracter of henry seems to have trouble in all these areas and desperatly wants to escape
his life and environment, his visions of a lady in the radiator, the only character in the film who
seems genuinly happy, seem to offer him an escape from his reality and ultimately his ill,
mutated baby. Lynchs use of surrealist imagery in this film is arresting, if not nightmarish at
times. An example would be the dinner scene when henry is asked to carve the chicken by
marys father, as soon as he sticks a fork in it, its legs begin to move whilst it oozes blood. In
certain scenes we share in henrys confusion and shock at the events occuring around him, a
testament to lynchs direction and jack nances perfomace. for most of the film henry is a passive
character, alowing things to happen to him without his intervention to stop them, by the end of the
film however he determines to free himself and does so in one of the more disturbing scenes of the

  • 2. Cartons Short Story There were two choices: mop the kitchen, or dump out two thousand cartons of spoiled macadamia nut milk. Sadly we didn t get the first choice. The boys decided to mop the kitchen, which they probably didn t know how to do. We got to work, two girls opening boxes, two more opening cartons, and another girl and myself were emptying the cartons into the sink. It wasn t really that bad, only a faint smell of something bad, I thought we got the easy job. That is until we kept working. Unloading box after box the smell grew stronger. It smelled worse than a barnyard by the time we reached the bottom rack. We stopped for a minute to clean up, the cartons were all broken and the garbage bags were leaking milk. My body was shaking and I feared I might pass out from the awful smell, but I continued, I only had two more cartons. They were horrible. The bottoms were all green and flimsy, dripping milk all over the ground as I rushed them to the sink. The job was done, until I turned around and saw the mess we left. I hauled the giant trash bags over my shoulder and threw them up into the old dumpster in the back of the building. By the time I was coming back in all the girls in my group had finished their break and came back in to help, but I was all done. I mopped up the ground and the room lightened. Everyone seemed pretty happy that they didn t have to clean up, I was pretty happy that I did clean up, I did the best job. Our day was done and we were dismissed from our worksite. As we climbed into the van, and I closed the heavy door, I thought so much, but most of all I thought about how our first day at work was and what the week had to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Developmental Stages And Theories Of Development Developmental Stages and Theories There are many areas in which an individual must develop to reach a mature level of adulthood. Several theories and ideas have been created in an attempt to describe the process that in which the individual passes to reach the desired levels of maturity. A few of those theories will be addressed in better understanding the development of Precious on a psychological and social plane. It can be assumed from observing Precious that she has been biologically developing normal as she is experiencing growth and hormonal changes and dealing with acne and obesity. Psychological Erik Erikson, in seeking to understand and describe human development, developed a theory in the early 1900s. His theory progressed to assume that humans must deal with or cope with the conflicts of a certain stage of life before they can move on to a higher level of development (Ashford et al, 2013). He organized eight different stages of psychosocial development from infancy to old age. Each of the eight stages represents an internal conflict that will greatly define who and individual becomes and the choices they will make later in life based on their experiences within each stage. During the adolescent years, the conflict of interest in Erikson s psychosocial theory deals with identity and identity confusion (Ashford et al, 2013). These years are crucial in developing a youth s self esteem. Young people are highly self conscious. Their perceptions of self ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. African Americans And African American Males Currently, African Americans make up nearly one million of the total 2.3 million incarcerated population. Nearly one in three African American males born today can expect to serve time in prison during their lifetime (NAACP, 2015). A central issue in today s society is the rate of criminalization of African Americanmales. There are many speculations on this topic; however, the central one is when a crime is committed then there is time to be served. However, the time served by African American males is disproportionate than that of Caucasian counterparts for the exact same crime. The lack of concern that is presented over the clear overrepresentation of African American males in the prison system is appalling. The present analysis will offer a comprehensive summary of the different factors that are to be taken into account of the stigmatization of African American male offenders. These factors include treatment while incarcerated, family support, the impact of the incarceration on the family, and the correlation between different social and contextual factors and incarceration. African American Males Research shows that individuals of African American descent are imprisoned more often than Caucasians. When it comes to prison, African American males seem to be discriminated against. In 2001, a total of 16.6% of African American males were incarcerated in a State or Federal prison (Bonczar, 2003). Post Modernism Perspective s According to postmodern perspectives, existing theories have been unsuccessful in explaining social life in contemporary societies that are characterized by post industrialization, consumerism, and global communications (Kendall, 01/2014, p. 29). Postmodern theories are based on the assumption that the rapid social change that occurs as societies move from modern to postmodern (or postindustrial) conditions has a harmful effect on people. One evident change is the significant decline in the influence of social institutions such as the family, religion, and education on people s lives. Those who live in postmodern societies typically pursue individual freedom and do not want the structural constraints that are imposed by social institutions (Kendall, 01/2014, p. 29). Postmodern (or postindustrial ) societies are characterized by an information explosion and an economy in which large numbers of people either provide or apply information, or they are employed in professional occupations (such as lawyers and physicians) or service jobs (such as fast food servers and health care workers). Descent From The Cross Analysis Group 1, Question A Catalina s masculine behaviors in her autobiography demonstrates how gender was socially constructed in both Europe and America during the colonial era. One scene in particular is, Meanwhile, some boys noticed me and surrounded me until, annoyed, I picked up some rocks and injured one of them (I don t know where because I didn t see) They arrested me and kept me in jail for one long month until he healed and they released me, with a little money remaining after my expenses (2). In this scene she stands her own ground against a group of men with violence rather than submitting to them or running away. Women during this era were not expected to defend themselves or fight back. That is more acceptable action for men to perform. Her violent behavior put her in jail not because she is unjust for defending herself, but because she struck a man and it was not socially acceptable for a woman to do so. This was the United States Second War for Independence from the British. After the War of 1812 there were major consequences that would change the lives of the Americans forever. Both industry and foreign relations were heavily impacted after the war. Industry flourished with new technology, the idea of interchangeable parts and the cotton gin. The cotton gin saved valuable time and interchangeable parts made mass manufacturing easier for things like guns and shoes. Foreign relations also improved with the Monroe Doctrine in 1823 and the Manifest Destiny in 1840. (Tell me how briefly, so one brief example each) In the 1800 s the United Stateseconomy was thriving due to an increase in domestic trade and mass manufacturing, while foreign relations improved, and a friendship with Great Britain was made. Prior to the War of 1812 America attempted to remain neutral regarding the war between Great Britain and France. George Washington, who was president at the time, even created the Neutrality Proclamation in an effort to keep the young nation out of conflicts abroad. However, persistent harassment from Great Britain and France at sea, including trade restrictions and impressment, caused America s neutrality to be threatened. Irving s Sleepy Hollow emphasizes local culture and the power of myth making within these cultures. In Irving s town of Sleepy Hollow, the tale of the headless horseman reigns, but does not extend outside of the local realm, and does not necessarily physically manifest: when Ichabod leaves for the city at the end of the narrative, the horseman does not follow him. However, in Burton s adaption, the tale of the headless horseman is not merely local folklore, but becomes elevated to the level of metropolitan news through the literal act of murder instead of the mere legend of murder. Crime, then, elevates the cultural status of the horseman from local legend to state wide murder suspect. Irving s story, noted by scholars such as Daniel Hoffmann for its powerful interpretation of local myth and mythic tropes, is transported into the realm of the metropolitan through the re characterization of New York as ... • 22. The Revenge Tragedy Of Hamlet Essay Issara Butt Professor Abbott English 102 November 30, 2016 The Revenge Tragedy of Hamlet Revenge tragedies share some common characteristics of the play Hamlet which classify them in the group of many great stories such as The Spanish Tragedy, and King Lear. A vengeful ghost, a play within a play, and the main character who seeks revenge on an opponent and murdered (KAY). At some point in life many of us feel the need to seek revenge and never actually act upon it, but what if we did? What would be the consequences and what would life be like afterwards. The thoughts we have of this makes the stories of revenge tragedies exciting and intriguing. They are our thoughts written on paper and into a story making as if what we think is actually happening. In the time of Shakespearean writing, things would have gone slightly different. The play Hamlet, is a prime example of a revenge tragedy in its refined state of written speech. Hamlet is a revenge tragedy for many reasons, not only that but it is the most written, re enacted, and read play of all time (TUMIEL). The multiple plots of revenge, murders, and ghost appearances makes Hamlet the leading play of revenge tragedies and most studied currently in academic curriculums. It is believed to be that William Shakespeare s Hamlet was based off of Thomas Kyd s story, Ur Hamlet (MABILLARD). Although Ur Hamlet was a rough and uncut version of a revenge tragedy and needed further developing, but Shakespeare s Hamlet is well refined, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As fantasy literature grows it can become unclear as to what social norms the literature is trying to juxtapose. Ezberk argues that trying to categorize fantasyliterature is a rebellious act as the subgenre s become too specific and can at times deceive the reader by delivering functions it is not meant to deliver. Ezberk argues through other works by establishing that the concept of realism is not valid in fantasy literature as it becomes too vague. Nature has given every species living in it an indefinite amount of time which allows them to evolve. Ergo, for over three billion years, some of the single cell organisms had been successfully evolving into the numerous multicellular organisms that we know of today, us included; and some, who were not able to improve within the given time, would be exterminated (Darwin 120). Although this is not a closed circuit, some energy is dissipated, some is added; but it is a sustained circuit (Leopold 43). This similar instance was also explained in Darwin s theory as the struggle for life for every species. In Darwinian theory, the struggle for life does not only represent the species struggle to survive, but it also reflected on the idea that each individual is interdependent with one another. A mistletoe seedling, for example, is said to struggle with each other if they grow close to one another. And if a mistletoes is disseminated by birds, its existence [now] depends on birds (Darwin 109). The struggle for existence that Darwin explain is then similar to the flow of energy explained by Leopold. The seed that is disseminated by birds becomes the container for the transfer of the energy from the sun. That energy would then be dissipated as work for the bird to fly from one place to another, if not the energy would be transferred to yet another organism. Thus, this seems as if evolution acts on every species with the thought of a certain ethics that the species must followed which formed a strict system. Further continuation of the theory comes from their explanation about the goal of evolution to elaborate and diversify the biota ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Baroque is distinguished by the grander sense of space in architecture, intense emotion and movement in painting and sculpture. Opulence and grandeur is often displayed in the ostentatious interiors homes of the elite and the church was highly decorated. In his essay on Discipline and Punish, Foucault presents his idea of the panopticon mechanism, a mechanism in which visibility is a trap. With little importance over the actual individual in the role of the observer or of the observed, the object of the system is total power over the observed. Due to the unique shape of the panopticon, there are no corners and thus no blind spots for the observed to hide in. The private space is replaced by the public one. Furthermore, as final evidence of total control, the observed never knows for sure if they are being watched or not, as they can t see the observer (Foucault 200 205). Digital Image And Its Effect On The Quality Of Image Abstract: In image processing, noise reduction and restoration of image is expected to improve the qualitative inspection of an image and the performance criteria of quantitative image analysis techniques Digital image is inclined to a variety of noise which affects the quality of image. The main purpose of de noising the image is to restore the detail of original image as much as possible. The criteria of the noiseremoval problem depends on the noise type by which the image is corrupting .In the field of reducing the image noise several type of linear and non linear filtering techniques have been proposed . Different approaches for reduction of noise and image enhancement have been considered, each of which has their own limitation and advantages. Index Terms Digital Image Processing, Images Types, Image Noise Model, Filters INTRODUCTION Digital Image process could be a part of digital signal process .The area of digital image process refers to handling digital pictures by means of a computing device. Digital image process has many merits on analog image process; it permits a significantly wider assortment of algorithms to be apply to input file and may keep from issues for instance the build up of noise and signal deformation throughout processing. The other children died of typhoid. But it was this tragedy of losing his children that inspired Louis Pasteur to try to discover cures for diseases like the typhoid. He was affected very deeply over his loss and that is what gave him the inspiration to do something for incurable diseases. Scientific Biography In 1854 he was a chemistry professor at the university of Lille, and it was here where he started working with the germ theory. Although he did not invent the germ theory, he was able to further develop it by demonstrating that bacteria was responsible for souring wine, beer and milk. People in those days believed that germs just popped out of nowhere but Pasteur proved otherwise. Through his experiments he showed that bacteria did not just appear but it came from other living things. It was this that earned him the nickname Father of the Germ Theory. Using his knowledge of germs he went on to invent pasteurization. He found that boiling and then cooling liquid could remove bacteria. Not only will this kill all the bacteria making the beverages safer to drink, it also made them last longer. Pasteur kept learning about bacteria and he started to think that it had something to do with why humans get diseases. In 1865, Louis Pasteur helped save the silk industry. He investigated why silkworms were getting a disease, which was threatening the French silk market. He proved that microbes were attacking the healthy silkworm eggs and he said if the microbes ... • 44. New England and Southern Colonies Essay example Both the New England colonies and the Southern colonies seemed as though they might be the same. They both started out with the majority of people being from England, they were both in the New World, and they were both ruled by England but, as time went on this theory was proven wrong. The New England colonies and the Southern colonies had many common characteristics but these two regions were very different geographically, politically, and socially. Geographically the New England colonies were the states of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire; the Southern colonies were Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. These two regions were on opposite sides of America so naturally, they had... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In New England, however, because of the lack of need for labor there were very few black slaves and everyone was relatively equal. A large difference between New England and the Southern colonies is that when people moved to the New England regions many of them came in communities and families. In the South because of the many individuals, there was a shortage of women and therefore population did not grow as quickly. This expansion of cities in the New England colonies led to the founding of primary and secondary schools for education. Harvard College in Massachusetts was founded eighty six years before the first college in Virginia. In the South, the few and spread out cities led to a slow development of schools and many children had tutors instead of attending school. These two very different social structures developed the character of the regions. As these colonies began to grow there became a need for a government and the two regions approached this in different ways. The Southern colonies prohibited taxes unless they were enforced by the grand assembly while New Englanders kept the right to tax locally whenever the need came. Also, the New England colonies placed much of their emphasis on town meetings. These meeting were attended by white males and they demonstrated the democracy that is seen in today s United States. In the Southern colonies the people were less enthusiastic about democracy and many of them were ruled by colonial ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is vital to many industries, accounting for just over thirty three percent of the world s energy supply. Crude oil is a naturally occurring substance that can be refined into several products, including diesel fuel, motor oil, and gasoline, among others. Though prices of crude oil in years passed were typically high, they fluctuate daily in response to a host of factors, including world wide rates of production and consumption, environmental issues, overall global economic health, and sociopolitical developments in other nations that purchase oil. The potential changes that BP should have been scanning for include technological and legislative changes, changes in the global economy, and changes in the physical environment. BP should have been aware, for example of any changes or trends in technology. Successful monitoring is then determined by a company s ability to accurately interpret the data collected from scanning. In this example, if BP had detected a technological change or trend, it would be important for them to have an understanding of exactly what the technology is and what it is capable of. Next, the company must be able to project how the detected changes and trends will impact business. A new technology could be a potential opportunity for BP or a threat if implemented by a competitor. And finally, once the changes and trends have been identified, it is important for the firm to determine the significance and timing of the event. With a change in technology, BP would need to assess whether or not implementation would give them a competitive advantage. The threat of new entrants to the industry in the context of the BP oil spill was likely pretty low. Aside from the traditional challenges of entering an industry as a new comer, new offshore leases were placed on hold, and a moratorium subsequently placed on offshore drilling below 500 feet by the federal government. Based on the feedback of my audience, I do believe that my message was received loud and clear on the presentation. Also, the questions from the others made me feel like they thought what I was saying was very interesting. My conclusion, in my opinion, was very soft and wasn t as strong as it needed to be. I tried to be sure that I left my audience with something to think about and try and maybe go on a scavenger hunt in their daily lives to find things that may be a skill I did not list. As with everything, I need improvement in a few areas. The use of the word um needs to be nonexistent! Maybe that was my anxiety and nervousness coming out? Either way, I need to eliminate the word from my vocabulary especially when presenting. Also, with my tone of voice, in a few sections, sounded like I was reading off paper. Even if I was those few times, I need to change how I read and my tone when reading. The chacracter of henry seems to have trouble in all these areas and desperatly wants to escape his life and environment, his visions of a lady in the radiator, the only character in the film who seems genuinly happy, seem to offer him an escape from his reality and ultimately his ill, mutated baby. Lynchs use of surrealist imagery in this film is arresting, if not nightmarish at times. An example would be the dinner scene when henry is asked to carve the chicken by marys father, as soon as he sticks a fork in it, its legs begin to move whilst it oozes blood. In certain scenes we share in henrys confusion and shock at the events occuring around him, a testament to lynchs direction and jack nances perfomace. for most of the film henry is a passive character, alowing things to happen to him without his intervention to stop them, by the end of the film however he determines to free himself and does so in one of the more disturbing scenes of the ...
