•Tic disorder = sudden, abnormal,
involuntary rapid, repetitive and
purposeless contraction of a small
group of muscles involving face,throat
and shoulder.
CAUSES =
• *Psychogenic = example.tension producing
behaviour and stress
• *Neurogenic = complication of encephalitis
• *Substance abuse (illegal drugs and alcohols)
• *Physiological = example.fatigue due to illness
CLINICAL MANIFESTATION (SIGN AND SYMPTOMS) =
• *Learning difficulty.
• *Sudden, uncontrollable movements of the
legs,arms or body.
• *Sound such as throat clearing,grunts or groans.
• * Hyperactivity.
• *Excessive eye blinking, twitching.
TYPES =
• 1 Motor tics = Involuntary movements
• Cause = Contraction of muscles
• (A) Simple Motor tics = head shaking,eye blinking,
sniffing, shoulder shrunging,grimace
• (B) Complex motor tics = head banging,lip biting ,
gesture
TYPES
• 2. Vocal tics = Clearing the throat humming
• (A) Simple vocal tics = coughing,barking throat
clearing.
• (B) Complex vocal tics = Echolalia,coprolalia(abuse
language use)
MANAGEMENT =
• 1. Drug therapy
• Haloperidol 0.5-6mg(antipsychotic drug)
• Pimozide 1-10mg
• Clonidine 0.05-0.25mg
• 2. Behavioral therapy
• 3. Individual and family counseling therapy
