Tourette's disorder, also known as tic disorder, is a neurological condition characterized by involuntary, rapid, repetitive motor and vocal tics. It most commonly develops in males between the ages of 2 and 21. The causes can be psychogenic due to stress, neurogenic due to encephalitis, familial due to Tourette's syndrome, or physiological due to fatigue or medical illness. Tics are classified as either motor tics involving muscle contractions or vocal tics involving sounds. Complex tics involve gestures or words. Diagnosis involves EEG or CT brain scans. Treatment options include drug therapy with haloperidol, pimozide, or clonidine as well as behavior modification and counseling.
