Effects Of The Purchase Of Louisiana
The purchase of Louisiana was both beneficial to President Thomas Jefferson as well as detrimental in
many ways. The ordeal started in October of 1802, where Joseph Harris of smithsonianmag.com states
that the Spanish administrator, Juan Ventura Morales, who was administering New Orleans until the
French administrator Laussat arrived, said that the terms of 1795 treaty had expired and the Americans
had lost their right to store American merchandise in warehouses located in New Orleans. Another
right lost to the Americans was free access to pass through the Spanish territory on the Mississippi
River. The United States depended on New Orleans and the Mississippi River for trading, as Jefferson
wrote There is on the globe one single spot, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Joseph Harris of smithsonianmag.com goes on to state that despite his brothers wishes, Napoleon had
decided to sell all of Louisiana to the United States as he was in need of money for his war with
Britain, as well as the fact Louisiana was not as important to him as Saint Domingue was. After
battering about the price, the purchase of Louisiana was agreed to cost $15 million from the United
States. While some Americans rejoiced in this purchase, not all agreed with the price paid, even if it
was less than four cents an acre. Smithsonianmag.com writes that The Boston Columbian Centinel
published that We are to give money of which we have too little for land of which we already have too
much. Schmoop.com states that the constitution does not authorize anywhere for the executive branch
to use the public funds to pay for the expansion of the United States. The purchase of Louisiana was
the opposite of the political philosophy that the Americans Elected President Thomas Jefferson for.
Jefferson emphasized small government, low taxes, and strict construction of the constitution.
Therefore, the purchase of the territory was unconstitutional by President Jefferson s standards
himself. At first, Jefferson wanted to draft a new amendment to the constitution that would make his
actions legal, but he did not know if this process would be finished in time. Not wanting to miss the
opportunity,

Along The River During The Qingming Festival Analysis
When mentioning Along the River During the Qingming Festival, most people will immediately think
of the version by the Song dynasty artist Zhang Zeduan, which is undeniably the earliest and most
well known version. There are many copies and variations of this work, including a painting by the
Ming dynasty artist Qiu Ying, which is also called Along the River During the Qingming Festival.
Although the artist uses the same title, this painting has its own beauty and connotative meanings that
cannot be ignored and which people need to discover and appreciate. Zhang Zeduan s masterpiece
depicts the landscape of his hometown, Kaifeng and the life of its people during the Song dynasty.
Nearly 500 years later, Qiu Ying portrayed his hometown Suzhou in a similar way, but in his version,
the scenes are different to the original version. Compared to Zhang, Qiu Ying added more blue and
green landscape patterns, and the feeling of the artisan is not strong in this work. The most important
thing is that both artists show different visual perspectives of the culture and customs of the city.
According to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Qiu s work depicts the prosperity of Suzhou in the middle era of the Ming dynasty, Zhang s
painting shows the daily life of people in Kaifeng during the Song dynasty. Qiu Ying s buildings are
more structured and grand, even the shops appear more spacious. The scenes in this painting represent
an important page in Chinese history by combining the history and reality of a genre painting. So
many landmark buildings in Suzhou are clearly recognizable which show the developed economy and
traditions of the Ming dynasty and the artist s own style. Qiu Ying uses the traditional blue and green
style in this painting, leading to a beautiful picture which is filled with bright green mountains and

Ember Book Comparison
Compare Contrast Essay Could you imagine living in a world underground that has no light and is
losing resources very quickly by the day? Well, the City Of Ember by Jeanne Duprau will help you
imagine that. The book, City of Ember was published in May 2003. Jeanne Duprau wrote this
attention grabbing book because she wanted to put the thought in our minds to not take the simple
things like food, water, lights, and a roof over our head for granted. In this book the similarities
outnumber the differences. In both the movie and the book Lina is curious about the mayor s actions
and the government s decisions. On Lina s way to give the mayor a message she finds herself getting
lost in the building and lurking around where she isn t supposed to be and seeing questionable things
that her eyes shouldn t be seeing. Equally important to the plot of this book is that in both the book
and movie Lina and Doon switch jobs which causes them to find out some big things, but I wouldn t
wanna spoil ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the begging of the movie when Lina and Doon are exploring the pipeworks looking for clues and
hints for someway to get out of Ember, they run into a huge problem, an oversized mole that tries
eating them. Which trusts me that made for a very interesting added scene. The second difference is at
the end of the story when Lina and Doon drop a note down to the city from above it ends up going to
Doons father instead of going to Mrs.Murdo in the book. They drop the note down so the citizens of
ember will find the note and read the directions on how to get off the quickly dying city. Not to
mention that in the beginning of the movie Lina doesn t end up going up to the bell tower ( where she
isn t supposed to be) which means the leader of the city, Mayor cole doesn t get a bad start with her.
Which causes him not to assume she s the one spreading the rumors about him stealing the food and

Millard Meiss s Painting In Florence And Siena After The...
The Black Death left more than an impact on the population of Florence and Siena in Italy, it impacted
the economy, the religious views, and the art of the thirteenth century. Millard Meiss in his book
Painting In Florence And Siena After The Black Death highlights the changes that occur in the artistic
world in Florence and Siena after the Black Death hits in 1348, 1363, and 1374. He focuses on the
similarities between the two cities and reasons behind them such as the common experience of
economic failure, pestilence, social conflict, their fear, sense of guilt, and varieties of their religious
response (P. 8).
Millard Meiss was a historian of late medieval and early Renaissance art. He went to New York
University where he studied medieval ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The chapter is structured to tell of the economic and political crises the cities experienced leading up
to the Black Death then moves onto the effects the plague had on culture and art. In the section about
the Black Death, Meiss used statistics of deaths in the cities to prove himself credible on the subject
but did not state the source from which he got the numbers. He also included anecdotes from survivors
such as Angolo di Tura to give a sense of imagery of the bodies piled up in the streets, piling them up
tier upon tier as merchandise is stowed in a ship (P. 65). In the section labeled The Effect Upon
Culture And Art, Meiss talks about the new opinions on art specifically about religious art, which
there was a new demand for. He explains in detail after the plague people led lives of irresponsible
pleasure. The reason Meiss talked about this consequence of the plague the most in the chapter was to
show how the people of the two cities lived each day like it was their last and became self indulgent.
He ties the conclusion of the chapter back to art and how the artists of the time transitioned into a new
movement of greater

Inventions And Inventions Of The United States
Imagine a time when the only way to get around was by riding a horse, or a time when the only way to
get in contact with someone was sending a letter, or a time when the only way to dig a hole was using
a shovel, during the mid 19th century young innovators, Alfred Nobel, Samuel Morse, and Thomas
Edison developed machines that made doing all that easier. Inventions and innovations like dynamite,
the railroads, and the telegraph helped the United States economy grow. Scientist developed, a railroad
that connected New York City to San Francisco, a telegraph that could send messages across long
distances within minutes, and dynamite which could blow up anything along its path. The United
States had a small, weak, economy, until the mid 1800s when inventions and innovations united and
strengthened the economy.
From the beginning of time, people have invented things and innovated to help expand their economy.
Gunpowder, the printing press, language, the wheel, pottery, post offices, and man made bridges are
all examples of inventions that led to economic growth. In 1800 prior to railroads, the only practical
way to travel and trade across long distances was along the nation s natural waterways (Metzner 1).
People could not work too far from home, travel , or even visit family that lived far away. Even
communication was a challenge, before the telegraph, telephone, typewriter, and phonograph,
spreading news throughout the world, or simply sending a family mail could take days or

Balanced Scorecard Facilities Management
KPMG International Shared Services and Outsourcing Advisory Using a balanced scorecard to help
measure facilities management performance by Steve Silen, Director, KPMG Advisory Services For
nearly 20 years, leading organizations have been using balanced scorecards to strategically measure
the financial and non financial performance of different operational functions within their firms. More
recently, they have begun leveraging them to measure the performance of their third party service
providers. In the facilities management (FM) function, use of a balanced scorecard enables companies
to evaluate the performance of their external providers against multiple criteria (see Figure 1), help set
alignment and focus, identify improvement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This enables them to zoom in on specific expenses such as maintenance or energy/utilities, and have
meaningful discussions with their providers about whether their expectations are being met. Customer
satisfaction Measuring the satisfaction level of those receiving FM services is another critical part of
the process. Organizations should use a variety of methods to obtain input directly from their internal
customers, including periodic email surveys (e.g., annual/ semi annual/upon completion of a service),
online or paper suggestion boxes, administrative assistant feedback sessions and # of complaints
received. A detailed scorecard, similar to the one in the cost category, should be established to measure
customer satisfaction. All of these are excellent ways to hear the voice of the customer and identify
areas for improvement. Yet care should be taken to develop and administer surveys that capture
relevant information without being a burden to complete, and that feedback sessions do not keep
participants away from their jobs for too long. Service delivery Proper operational performance is
ensured only when providers meet or surpass firms service delivery expectations. Thus, organizations
should implement a detailed scorecard to assess service delivery performance for each service line.
For example, in the maintenance category, the detailed scorecard may look like the example in Figure
4 on the next page and Figure 5 shows

Solar Power Vs. Wind Power
Have you ever thought about green energy? Well if you have, I am sure that you have heard of solar
power and wind power. There are also other forms of green energy, but they are not used as much as
solar or wind power, but solar vs, wind power is one the most debated topics in green energy. This
topic is controversial because the world is beginning to switch to renewable green energy and people
and politicians are debating which energy source they should use. Solar power is a better option than
wind power.
There are many reasons why solar power is better than wind power. One of the reasons is that solar
panels take less maintenance than wind turbines. Standard warranties normally last 25 years; and this
includes any repairs and damages that could occur to the solar panel. An example of this is if a tree
were to fall onto a group of solar panels from a storm and it was within the 25 year warranty, then the
company that made the solar panel would come and repair or replace the broken or damaged panels.
Wind turbines have shorter warranties from the manufacturers, and this should make people less
certain of their reliability. The solar panel companies also have a guarantee that a solar panel s
efficiency won t drop below a certain percentage over its lifespan, this percentage is normally in the
range of 85 90% efficiency. Also, solar panels are made of tempered glass which is made to withstand
hail and other damaging weather. Solar panels don t have any moving parts like a wind

The American Revolution
The American Revolution was the struggle by which thirteen colonies won independence from Great
Britain, to become what we now know as The United States of America. The American Revolution
came about primarily because the colonists had matured. Their interests and goals were so different
and distant from those of the mother country. Local politics, practices, social customs, religious
beliefs, and economic interests had gone so far from the English ways. The American Revolution had
a tremendous impact not only in The United States, but also in Europe and the rest of the world.
The Navigation Acts channeled the flow of colonial raw materials into England and kept foreign
goods and vessels out of colonial ports. The Navigation Acts incorporated multiple laws that were
created over a period of time. The Acts were passed with the theory of mercantilism, which restricted
free trade. They were intended to keep foreign goods and vessels out of colonial ports. The Navigation
Act of 1651 banned imported goods from other countries, unless the ship or cargo had an all British
crew. The second Act was extended to exports in addition to imports. Four more Acts were passed
between the years of 1662 and 1773, which proposed even more restrictions on trade. The Molasses
Act in 1773 forced the colonists to purchase the more expensive sugar from the Britain because they
had raised the tax on all sugar and molasses products coming from anywhere else. Smuggling was also
a huge result of these

Difference Between Fate And Free Will
Fate and Free Will
Introduction
Why is the Tralfamadorian idea of time incompatible with free will? Free Will is a philosophical term
of art for a particular sort of capacity of rational agents to choose a course of action from among
various alternatives. In simple terms free will is what makes us able to make a decision, to choose
something you want over something you do not want. Since the Tralfamadorians are aliens and have
the ability to see the fourth dimension they can see things humans cannot see and have a different
understanding of the world, the universe and how everything in life works.
Does Billy Pilgrim exercise his own will at any point in the novel?
Billy Pilgrim comes across as a pretty simple guy, often other people make decisions for him but as he
grows older he takes things in his own hands more often. But does that mean he makes decisions out
of his own will?
Edgar Derby only becomes a character when he chooses to stand up against American Nazi Howard
W. Campbell, Jr. It is this decision to stand up for what he believes in ... Show more content on

Is the free will any more possible to combine it with than with the Tralfamadorian? But do we even
need Free Will and why is it not Free Will if everything is determined from the beginning on? If you
did not know that you did not have a free will it would not bother you. If we can believe what we want
to believe, we can also believe that Free Will is always possible. Even if some things are given and
cannot be changed why should there not be multiple ways to get to the same end? At the same time,
why should we even need free will? Is it not better without it? Everything is predetermined, that may
be frightening to some people but then again, why should it be? It only means that no matter what you
do, no matter how bad a situation may seem it is not even your fault and it will work out in the end,

The Cheesecake Factory Experience
MINH VO

PAPER
I personally don t like to eat out much. I only go out and eat when there are any special occasions. The
last time I went out eating was with my boyfriend on our first anniversary. We went to The
Cheesecake Factory which is also on of my favorite places to dine in.
The Cheesecake Factory is very familiar with everyone now. This place is famous for their
cheesecakes as well as the diversity of food to choose from. The Cheesecake Factory was established
in the 1940s by Oscar and Evelyn Overton. Mrs. Overton personally made baked cheesecakes in the
basement of their home for the best local restaurants. In 1972 they moved their business to Los
Angeles, California where they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think anyone can do that, no need to depend on any person. So in case if it was really busy, a single
person cannot prepare cheesecake for all the customers in the same time, others can help. Besides, I
believe ethics are a collection of principles and practices that a business believes in and aims to live
by. The Cheesecake Factory s mission statement and more specific policies about conduct to give
employees, partners, vendors, and outsiders an idea of what the corporation stands for and how it s
staff should conduct themselves. Key areas that are of significant importance to The Cheesecake
Factory start with the general standards of conduct in how all its employees will be treated by fellow
employees and by management. The standards deals the basic values that we all have, with the
expectation of building trust, loyalty, honesty, respect, and a high level of professionalism within the
company. This will create a positive working environment that will uplift the attitudes and morale of
its employees and depending on what your position is could increase productivity and customer
relations. All jobs have a certain amount stress related to it, but having those basic codes of the takes
away a lot the negative personal stress that can arrive on the job.
In conclusion, I still consider The Cheesecake Factory is my favorite place to eat. Even though I had a
bad experience there once, I think that they can improve it better.

British Politics During The Lifetime Of Newton
a. What were British politics during the lifetime of Newton? Before Isaac Newton was born, King
Charles I was driven out of London by mobs and had to seek refuge in Nottingham, which was just a
few miles away from Woolsthorpe, Newton s soon to be hometown (Guillen, 1995, p. 13). While King
Charles I was there, he declared war over who/what was going to govern England Parliament or the
royal sovereign (Gullien, 1995, p.13). However, this war was more like a war between heaven and
earth because kings and queens were supposedly selected by God himself and peasants were just mere
mortals who inhabited the earthly realm (Gullien, 1995, p. 13 14). Parliament wanted King Charles I
to relinquish his control over church and state because the religious intolerance and the heavy taxes.
Sadly, Newton s father was called out to be a part of King Charles I army and died before Issac
Newton was born (Gullien, 1995, p.14). While Newton was a young child, England s civil war was
still raging (Gullien, 1995, p. 16). His hometown of Woolsthorpe had been captured. Nevertheless,
Newton went to school like every other child. However, Newton s world was soon turned upside
down, when he heard the news that the Puritan dominated Parliament had defeated the king s armies
and had beheaded King Charles I (Gullien, 1995, p. 16). Newton did not like Parliamentarians. Later
on, during Newton s teen years, Parliament created strict rules of behavior. For example, they
outlawed almost all manner of

Thorntons, a more than 100 years old UK brand, is now the largest British chocolate manufacturer and
retailer in this country. This chocolate specialist mainly targets at premium chocolate market, retailing
mostly through both its own shops and franchise. To diversify Thorntons business into Chinese and
Indian high end chocolate market, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is recommended for a better
control of brand image. Besides, Thorntons is recommended to import UK made highly premium

Therefore, this report will evaluate the recommendation through three criteria: market attractiveness,

Southwest Airline Case Study
History
Southwest Airlines has been a model of admiration for the airline industry and businesses from around
the world combined. Southwest Airlines is a rag to riches story that has had to fight for everything it
has become. Before Southwest was able to take on its first passengers, they had to fight competitors in
the court system for nearly three and a half years.
In 1966, Fortune Magazine states, A San Antonio lawyer, Herb Kelleher, founded Southwest with one
of his clients (now a Board member) over drinks at a local bar. Southwest was started in a bar on a
cocktail napkin. Fortune Magazine quoted Mr. Kelleher, it was at the St. Anthony s Club in San

Southwest Airlines is characterized as a C corporation with duration distinguished as a normal
perpetual existence. The shareholders are not normally liable for debts of the corporation and they
preserve an operation that is normally more structured, requiring more meetings and (in some states)
more reporting requirements. Management is very centralized through the board of directors (elected
by the shareholders) and the officers (elected by the directors). The corporation is taxable entity,
although the income which would normally be taxed at the corporate level can normally be paid out in
salaries (and in other deductible ways) so that there is in fact no tax at the corporate level. As far as
transferability of interest, it is normally fully transferable and raising capital is in the choice of public
companies. Southwest Airlines values employees, initiating the first profit sharing plan in the U.S.
airline industry in 1974 and offered it ever since. In 2000, Southwest offered its employees a record
setting $138M in profit sharing. This tax deferred compensation represented an additional 14.1 percent
of each employee s annual salary. The current mission statement of Southwest Airlines does not
satisfactorily address each component of the Evaluation Matrix of Mission Statements and therefore
should be revised. I have revised the mission statement and believe the revision below better addresses

Palestrina s Role In The Counter-Reformation
Palestrina s role in the Counter Reformation was to write music that could be used in the chapel. On
April 28, 1565 singers of the papal chapel were brought together at the home of Cardinal Vitellozzi to
test to see if words could be understood in the songs. People don t know if Palestrina s Missa Papae
Marcelli was performed there or not. But some suggestions say that it was copied in a choirbook later
on. Palestrina was involved in composing some works for the chapel and evidence increases that some
compositions that he has written and is to write is for use of the chapel. Another role that Palestrina
had in the Counter Reformation was to work on the revisions of the plainsongs of the Roman Gradual
and Antiphoner. Palestrina never completed this project ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The revisions ended up being made by Felice Anerio and Francesco Soriano. The revisions made are
what Palestrina would have. Some of the revisions that he made can be seen in some chants of the
1582 Directorum Chori. The first song, Kyrie, I have actually heard before because one of the choirs
in my high school sang it for one of there songs. The song has a very nice flow to it and seems like a
song that is sung in a church somewhere. I looked up what the word Kyrie means and found from
dictionary.com that it means, Lord, have mercy .(SDFAS) The second song ,Gloria, was also a very
smooth flowing song. With all of the different parts in it, it makes it sound very good. Palestrina did
very well on both of the pieces. Palestrina had a couple of roles in the Counter Reformation. One was
to write music that could be used in the chapel. Another one was he had to work on the revisions of
the plainsongs of the Roman Gradual and Antiphoner. Listening to two of Palestrina s works was very
neat. After hearing Kyrie on here from what i heard from my choir in high school was neat to hear the
differences. Palestrina did very well on both pieces that I listened

A Brief Look at Shark Culling
Is shark culling okay given the number of shark attacks that have occurred? Recently it seems that the
number of shark attacks has increased with seven fatal attacks in the past 3 years in Western Australia
(WA). These recent attacks have led the WA Government being granted an exemption to start culling
sharks with a catch and kill shark program. A lot of people including scientists and surfers are against
this controversial decision. For people to make an informed decision they need to have an
understanding of where the shark fits into the marine ecosystem, as well as the reasons presented for
the use of shark culling and the arguments given that oppose such extreme measures.
The Shark s place in the marine ecosystem is as a predator at the top of the food chain as there is no
natural predator of sharks. Sharks are not very fastidious about what they eat but their diet generally
consists of seal, crab, squid, lobster and fish. If sharks were to become extinct there would be an
ecological cost. The marine life that is the shark s food source would start to overpopulate with
nothing to prey on it. One possible reason that sharks are coming closer to shores is that their natural
food source is diminishing due to overfishing by humans. To stop sharks from being too near to
popular swimming locations, fishermen need to expand or change their hunting areas.
One reason for culling sharks is that when there are sharks in populated areas, people s lives are in
danger therefore if

Manifest Destiny Thesis
In the early to mid 19th century, Manifest Destiny was one of the most core beliefs in the American
way of life. Manifest Destiny was the belief that it was America s duty to spread across and conquer
the continent, Atlantic to Pacific. However, as America inched west, purchasing and fighting for land,
one recurring problem was brought along with us, the issue of Slavery. From the Constitutional
Convention in 1786, to the Antebellum Period of the mid 1800 s, Slavery was an issue that, in large,
was repeatedly swept under the rug, being left to the next generation to decide. As America gained
new territories, agreements had to be made to keep the balance of Slave States and Free States . Some
politicians had the foresight to see that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sumner s strong word choice shows displays very clearly how deep the division in ideals truly is, even
though the nation was still years before the Civil War. Manifest Destiny was unstoppable, and because
of this, the debate over slavery was not going anywhere. Eventually, a final decision would have to be
made. This was said in the Whig journal, American Review, The natural progress of events will
undoubtedly give us that province [California] just as it gave us Texas. While not directly speaking of
the great division in the country, the idea that western expansion could not be stopped, and that
eventually, all the territory would be made into states, meaning that the issue and divisions of slavery
were not going to go away. The Senator and the American Review make a very good argument.
Manifest Destiny is unstoppable, as are the desires of both Slave holding states, and Free holding
states. As American Expands, so will the bitter division between two starkly different ideals about the
future of the American way of

Several variations of distinguished copy:
1. All distinguished copies reside on the same node: Primary Site
2. Distinguished copies may reside on different sites: Primary Copy
There are problems with this approach: o What if the primary site fails or if the node where the

Another overall approach (aside from distinguished copy), is to use a Voting protocol: To lock a data

Peace Negotiations in International Security
Post Cold War era is marked by the dominance of peace negotiations in international security, and
Middle east (ME) being a conflict area for a long time, got adequate focus. Tale of oil rich ME is a
story of conflicts having Israel Palestine issue at the core, and the stability and peace of this region
largely hinged on to the solution of this issue. So far, a number of unsuccessful initiatives have been
taken by world community for the solution of the issue. Roadmap for peace was one of such initiative,
initially coined by USA, which calls for a two state solution. Like other past initiatives this also turned
into a failure. Though the share of blame for failure goes to all stake holders, however, USA got the
large share of blames from international community due to her bias stance towards Israel. This
biasness is driven from long drawn USA Israel relationship built upon factors like sympathy for Israel
within USA, mental alikeness, strategic importance of Israel, influences of Israeli Lobby etcetera.
Though all these factors have their role in shaping US foreign policy in ME but many argue that
Israeli Lobby plays the most dominant role. In this essay an endeavour will be made to discuss
biasness of USA towards Israel in Israel Palestine peace process and discuss USA Israel relationship
as the basis of such biasness, using Roadmap (2003) as case study. In the process, it will first discuss
peace negotiation in general, followed by discussions on Roadmap and the role and

Stereotypes Of African Americans
Stereotypes. Labels. Many have experienced being labeled, while practically all of us have labeled
others in the past. Whether it be a person we ve never met, a person we saw for the first time, or even
a friend, labels along with their accompanying stereotypes are frequently placed upon various types of
people. However, stereotypes are never random; there seems to be some sort of perceived knowledge
about the nature of a person when the stereotype is formulated. A stereotype is oftentimes used to
categorize a group of people who are practically forced to act likewise in order to fit in. Throughout
history, many scholars and writers have lashed out against the use of different stereotypes, Caryl
Churchill and Khushwant Singh being two of them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From a very young age, fathers often tend to train their sons to grow up to be proper men, as Clive
reveals, My son is young. I m doing all I can/ to teach him to grow up to be a man (Act 1, Scene 1).
Edward, in turn, strives to make his father proud, but is not capable. He says, What my father wants I
d dearly like to be. / I find it rather hard as you can see (Act 1, Scene 1). Clive s son is portrayed as a
girl; after all, he loves playing with his sister s doll. He takes care of the doll as if it were his; however,
he is beaten by his mother, nanny, and father as a result. Playing with dolls was seen as a girl s
activity, and that was definitely not seen as proper behavior for a boy. Additionally, he engages in a
few sexual encounters with Harry which reveals his gay sexual inclinations. Such relationships and
activities were looked down upon in disgust, even worse they were prohibited! Churchill had a girl
play Edward to expose his true nature. Being a gay at that time and place, was not an option because
of all the stereotypical aspects attached to it. One could only imagine the deep sorrow Edward had to
go through to fulfill the stereotypical expectations of a man, when he truly felt like the girl playing his
character. Similarly, Ellen also dealt with the hardships of stereotypes rising from sexuality. When she
reveals how she truly felt towards Betty, I just want to be alone

Elephant the movie Essay
Gus Van Sant s Elephant was at once critically praised and denounced by both film reviewers and
filmgoers alike. The cinematography takes you on a waltz throughout a seemingly typical day at an
unnamed high school, stopping through the journey to focus on the stereotypes of school. The jock,
the quirky artist, the cliqued girls, the skateboarder, they are all represented and representative of his
film. Van Sant created a film, seemingly without a staunch opinion on the horrors of the Columbine
shootings. The movie seems distanced from the actors and their actions: an unaware participant from
the tranquil introduction to the gruesome climax. His seeming lack of a purpose, lack of a reason for
the creation of this film, is exactly the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Van Sant s film aestheticizes the reality of high school, focusing on its beauty and character, and
ignoring the underlying grime inherent on most campuses. The halls and yard of the school are kept in
immaculate condition, staying unnaturally clean, almost sterile for a school. Despite this seeming
glorification of the building, the hallways are kept as a constant secondary to the sharply focused
characters the camera constantly follows. It takes the focus away from the bare walls and empty
hallways and places it solely on the students. The film isn t about the location that it occurred, but the
people that it happened to. The focus is on the students of the film, both literally and figuratively. The
camera seems to never stop moving, save for brief pauses that seem to rest the viewer. There is little
extraneous distraction from the characters as they walk down the hall; the only time something
distracts from the center of attention is when it is repeated again as the film goes through its several
cycles that repeat scenes from different points of view.
The film intertwines the lives of its multiple points of view. They all seem to be unrelated, but they
ultimately tie together in a cohesive storyline that unravels into its unavoidable conclusion. Each
person follows his or her own timeline until it reaches the point

Executive Branch Research Paper
On September 17, 1787, the U.S Constitution was ratified and the greatest experiment in US history
began. Realizing the need to establish a more perfect union , the founding fathers of our country
created a three branch system of government. The term trias politica or separation of powers was
coined by Charles Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu, an 18th century French
social and political philosopher. (NCSL.Org) The framers of the constitution were well established
and educated men who studied politics and understood the grave importance of securing a democratic
government. In order to ensure democracy, the idea of separation of power was of great importance.

Migration: Communist Cleanse
World War II: Yet another instance of mass relocation and genocide of an ethnic group. But what
about after the Holocaust? In December 1944, Prime Minister Winston Churchill stood on the world s
stage and announced the largest forced population transfer in human history the ethnic cleansing of
post war Germany (Douglas). Up until the 1970 s or so, resources written in English on this particular
involuntary migration were nonexistent; even in Europe, the subject is considered taboo.
British, American, and Russian governments officialized the controversial decision to expel between

Germany and recognizing those displaced all around Europe (specifically Poland). At about the same
time the Cold War was getting cold, an increasing number of German expellees began to speak up
about their forgotten holocaust. Many created organizations that demanded compensation for their
suffering, especially in West Germany. Still, the Allies kept the discussions to a mum; some (such as
Czechoslovakia) continued to justify the cleansing as a fit punishment for Nazi crimes and refused to
acknowledge the atrocity as anything more. After the fall of the U.S.S.R. and the reconciliation of East
and West Germany, the subject became a slightly more open topic. After the Nuremberg Trials in 1945
concluded that forced immigration was a crime against humanity, the issue could no longer be
ignored... or so it seemed. Today ethnic cleansing is considered a crime against international law,
although some consider the forced expulsion of Germans after WWII to have been a legal procedure at
the time (seeing as such crimes were not addressed by the UN Declaration of Human Rights nor the
European Convention on Human Rights in 1950). The expulsion continues to make appearances in
modern politics, especially in Europe; for instance, a declaration in 1997 by the Czech Republic has
effectively closed the topic and attempted to restrict legal claims made by German descendants (
Germans Expelled ). Still, these immigrants, along with their children, continue to try and demand the
property confiscated from them during the

As one of the few books with LGBT themes out there, it is really heartwarming to see how much
literature is diversifying. It is especially pleasing that, while the LGBT themes are very frequent
throughout the book, they aren t the whole story. To those who may not understand what I mean: it is
just nice to see representation in the background; it normalizes things. The same goes for a central

Why Winter Driving Is Bad
As all long time residents know, Michigan winters can be brutal. However, even during a normal
winter, you can expect average temperatures that are below freezing for three months out of the year
and snowfall totals ranging between 44 inches and 55 inches. Keeping your pavement clear
throughout the winter typically involves frequent applications of salt or chemical deicers as well as
repeated snowplowing. Between the freeze/thaw cycle, the potential damage from snowplows and the
corrosive actions of deicing materials, your asphalt pavement can take a beating. If you want to
minimize the damage that winter can cause, you should make sure that you have cracks repaired
before the arrival of cold weather.

Social Networking in Business
Abstract Businesses today are growing more aware of trends in social and business networking to
assist them in growing, developing products, services and the advertising to draw consumers to them
in ever increasing numbers. Social Networking in Business Many businesses are using social
networking to see what consumers are saying about products and what will likely be purchased by
people. Companies such as Pizza Hut, Papa John s and Sears are using networking sites. Someone can
become a fan of Papa John s on Facebook.com or follow them on Twitter.com and receive discounts
on pizza. Pizza Hut has a blog on Twitter for people to make comments and access codes for
discounts; there is also a link for the Pizza Hut main site. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many of the entrepreneurs on the sites help each other find tools for advertising, marketing lists and
items to help the business succeed. Even at times there is emotional support when a business owner is
having problems in their personal life. Others connected with Elygantthings.com try to help each other
cope. Support is very important when just starting a business and even if someone has been in
business a long time. Sometimes having discussions between other business owners helps in getting
past a difficult time whether related to business or personal difficulties. Social networking is important
to me for my future business because it will help in establishing a concrete presence for my company.
Starting and maintaining a professional blog on Twitter or other places such as that will help to get the
company name out there for people to see. Potential customers will understand what my business
encompasses; also types of services or products readily available to them before and after a purchase.
It would help me when dealing with shippers and suppliers in running my business efficiently. In the
scheme of things, I want to let people know what I believe in and how the company will work with
them on any interactions with them. References Brynko, Barbara. (2009/05), Filtrbox: Tracking Real

The Dominican Republic is a democratic state that is governed by a representative democracy. The
democratic system is made up of three branches of government in the executive, judiciary, and the

being the commander of the country s army. The president and his vice work in accordance to the
terms of the executive, and they are elected into office for a period of four years. The president does

The Impact Of Iso 14001 On Asian Firms
THE IMPACT OF ISO 14001 ON ASIAN FIRMS
1, Challenging World of Business in Asia
Firms in developed countries have been faced with increasing amounts of pressure to manage and
evaluate the impact of their activities on environment as the impacts went well beyond local and
regional levels since around the 1970s. Following the developed countries, the same concern has
become increasingly obvious in Asia as most of Asian industries have been developed through the
export driven style economy and this has made them to do their economic activities in conformity
with international standards. In order to reach better profitability and international competitiveness,
firms in Asia have been facing the challenges of operating their business without damaging the
environment and their corporate finances.
The Asian continent enjoys a very rich mixture of complex cultures and this complexity is reflected in
their economic, political, legal and business systems. Most Southeast Asian countries developed
through primarily agricultural economies where industrial production has a limited influence until
about 30 years ago (Oosterveer, Kamolsiripichaiporn and Rasiah 2006, p. 217). As industrial
production increased rapidly over the last decades, the number of NIEs, newly industrialised
economies, in the region has expanded to include countries such as Malaysia, Thai and Indonesia. This
means that these countries have joined the more developed fist members of NIEs, Hong Kong,
Singapore, Taiwan

High School Common Core State Standards
In the last six years a new standards system has been created for high school students in order to help
them prepare for college classes; this system is the Common Core State Standards Initiative. The
Common Core system, developed in 2009, addresses both mathematics and English language arts. It
creates a system of standards that map out skills and abilities from grades K 12 that need to be focused
upon in order for students to be successful in the future.
The creators of the Common Core State Standards wanted the system to become universal however,
many educators began to criticize certain aspects of the standards, such as the overall effectiveness of
the standards and types of elements that are included in the standards. Among the many school
systems in the nation, debates arose around whether it would be better for them to adopt the Common
Core standards or to create their own standards.
Purpose of Report
Rather than address both elements of the standards, the purpose of this report is to analyze high school
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and related debates. Topics include:
A discussion of the basic elements of the curriculum
An analysis of responses
An analysis of status and results
Results of Report
This report concludes that Common Core State Standards for English Language attempts to prepare

Modern Food During The Medieval Era
Food is an essential need in order to survive. Medieval food took a turn during the Middle Ages.
Different foods were put in groups to be consumed according to the social rank of individuals. Noble s
diets would be unquestionably different than the peasants. Religion also played a significant role on
food during the Medieval Times. People celebrated large banquets and feasts during this Era. During
the Medieval Era, there was a difference in food that was consumed by the rich and poor. The diet of
the rich and the poor was not considered healthy and balanced. Rich individuals were called nobles or
royalty. The quality of food that was ingested by the rich and poor differed significantly. If you were
considered royalty, ingredients such as spices, sweet foods, and sugar was available to you. Upper and
lower classes both ate three meals a day. The upper class s food would be served from silverware and
gold dishes. Here in the United States, liquid food is generally eaten with spoons, but people during
medieval times drank liquid food from cups. Expensive spices such as pepper, cinnamon, cloves,
nutmeg, ginger and so on was put in most of the food consumed by the Upper class. The nobles drank
a variety of wines.

Neo Classicism in France and the United States
The classical style of the ancient Athens, derived from Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome in the 15th
century, has had a universal impact on many cultures during previous time periods. The classical
period reflected traditional forms focused on symmetry and elegance; it flourished during the time of
the Renaissance through artist such as Michelangelo, Raphael, and Leonardo De Vinci. The artists
main goal was to attain the absolute beauty in their art by showing emotion through detail, almost
through perfection. Some examples of well known classical arts during the Renaissance were
Belvedere Torso and the Medici Venus . In the 17th century the classical style was revived, now called
the neo classical style. It was born in Rome but its popularity flourished all over Europe. The neo
classical movement clashed with the age of Enlightment and continued through the 19th century. The
neo classical principles were based around the same characteristics as the classical arts such as:
balance, proportion, order, simplicity, clarity, and reason. It was strongest in architect, sculpture, and
decorative arts. The neo classical style continued to spread throughout the world and became sought
after in the 17th and 18th century in countries such as France and The United States, and it influenced
some of the greatest government buildings in America.
Neoclassicism can be seen as a political movement as well as an artistic and cultural one.

  • 2. Effects Of The Purchase Of Louisiana The purchase of Louisiana was both beneficial to President Thomas Jefferson as well as detrimental in many ways. The ordeal started in October of 1802, where Joseph Harris of smithsonianmag.com states that the Spanish administrator, Juan Ventura Morales, who was administering New Orleans until the French administrator Laussat arrived, said that the terms of 1795 treaty had expired and the Americans had lost their right to store American merchandise in warehouses located in New Orleans. Another right lost to the Americans was free access to pass through the Spanish territory on the Mississippi River. The United States depended on New Orleans and the Mississippi River for trading, as Jefferson wrote There is on the globe one single spot, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Joseph Harris of smithsonianmag.com goes on to state that despite his brothers wishes, Napoleon had decided to sell all of Louisiana to the United States as he was in need of money for his war with Britain, as well as the fact Louisiana was not as important to him as Saint Domingue was. After battering about the price, the purchase of Louisiana was agreed to cost $15 million from the United States. While some Americans rejoiced in this purchase, not all agreed with the price paid, even if it was less than four cents an acre. Smithsonianmag.com writes that The Boston Columbian Centinel published that We are to give money of which we have too little for land of which we already have too much. Schmoop.com states that the constitution does not authorize anywhere for the executive branch to use the public funds to pay for the expansion of the United States. The purchase of Louisiana was the opposite of the political philosophy that the Americans Elected President Thomas Jefferson for. Along The River During The Qingming Festival Analysis When mentioning Along the River During the Qingming Festival, most people will immediately think of the version by the Song dynasty artist Zhang Zeduan, which is undeniably the earliest and most well known version. There are many copies and variations of this work, including a painting by the Ming dynasty artist Qiu Ying, which is also called Along the River During the Qingming Festival. Although the artist uses the same title, this painting has its own beauty and connotative meanings that cannot be ignored and which people need to discover and appreciate. Zhang Zeduan s masterpiece depicts the landscape of his hometown, Kaifeng and the life of its people during the Song dynasty. Nearly 500 years later, Qiu Ying portrayed his hometown Suzhou in a similar way, but in his version, the scenes are different to the original version. Compared to Zhang, Qiu Ying added more blue and green landscape patterns, and the feeling of the artisan is not strong in this work. • 4. Ember Book Comparison Compare Contrast Essay Could you imagine living in a world underground that has no light and is losing resources very quickly by the day? Well, the City Of Ember by Jeanne Duprau will help you imagine that. The book, City of Ember was published in May 2003. Jeanne Duprau wrote this attention grabbing book because she wanted to put the thought in our minds to not take the simple things like food, water, lights, and a roof over our head for granted. In this book the similarities outnumber the differences. In both the movie and the book Lina is curious about the mayor s actions and the government s decisions. On Lina s way to give the mayor a message she finds herself getting lost in the building and lurking around where she isn t supposed to be and seeing questionable things that her eyes shouldn t be seeing. Equally important to the plot of this book is that in both the book and movie Lina and Doon switch jobs which causes them to find out some big things, but I wouldn t wanna spoil ... They drop the note down so the citizens of ember will find the note and read the directions on how to get off the quickly dying city. Not to mention that in the beginning of the movie Lina doesn t end up going up to the bell tower ( where she isn t supposed to be) which means the leader of the city, Mayor cole doesn t get a bad start with her. The Black Death left more than an impact on the population of Florence and Siena in Italy, it impacted the economy, the religious views, and the art of the thirteenth century. Millard Meiss in his book Painting In Florence And Siena After The Black Death highlights the changes that occur in the artistic world in Florence and Siena after the Black Death hits in 1348, 1363, and 1374. He focuses on the similarities between the two cities and reasons behind them such as the common experience of economic failure, pestilence, social conflict, their fear, sense of guilt, and varieties of their religious response (P. 8). He also included anecdotes from survivors such as Angolo di Tura to give a sense of imagery of the bodies piled up in the streets, piling them up tier upon tier as merchandise is stowed in a ship (P. 65). In the section labeled The Effect Upon Culture And Art, Meiss talks about the new opinions on art specifically about religious art, which there was a new demand for. The reason Meiss talked about this consequence of the plague the most in the chapter was to show how the people of the two cities lived each day like it was their last and became self indulgent. Inventions And Inventions Of The United States Imagine a time when the only way to get around was by riding a horse, or a time when the only way to get in contact with someone was sending a letter, or a time when the only way to dig a hole was using a shovel, during the mid 19th century young innovators, Alfred Nobel, Samuel Morse, and Thomas Edison developed machines that made doing all that easier. Inventions and innovations like dynamite, the railroads, and the telegraph helped the United States economy grow. Scientist developed, a railroad that connected New York City to San Francisco, a telegraph that could send messages across long distances within minutes, and dynamite which could blow up anything along its path. The United States had a small, weak, economy, until the mid 1800s when inventions and innovations united and strengthened the economy. From the beginning of time, people have invented things and innovated to help expand their economy. Gunpowder, the printing press, language, the wheel, pottery, post offices, and man made bridges are all examples of inventions that led to economic growth. In 1800 prior to railroads, the only practical way to travel and trade across long distances was along the nation s natural waterways (Metzner 1). Balanced Scorecard Facilities Management KPMG International Shared Services and Outsourcing Advisory Using a balanced scorecard to help measure facilities management performance by Steve Silen, Director, KPMG Advisory Services For nearly 20 years, leading organizations have been using balanced scorecards to strategically measure the financial and non financial performance of different operational functions within their firms. More recently, they have begun leveraging them to measure the performance of their third party service providers. In the facilities management (FM) function, use of a balanced scorecard enables companies to evaluate the performance of their external providers against multiple criteria (see Figure 1), help set alignment and focus, identify improvement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This enables them to zoom in on specific expenses such as maintenance or energy/utilities, and have meaningful discussions with their providers about whether their expectations are being met. Customer satisfaction Measuring the satisfaction level of those receiving FM services is another critical part of the process. Organizations should use a variety of methods to obtain input directly from their internal customers, including periodic email surveys (e.g., annual/ semi annual/upon completion of a service), online or paper suggestion boxes, administrative assistant feedback sessions and # of complaints received. A detailed scorecard, similar to the one in the cost category, should be established to measure customer satisfaction. All of these are excellent ways to hear the voice of the customer and identify areas for improvement. Yet care should be taken to develop and administer surveys that capture relevant information without being a burden to complete, and that feedback sessions do not keep participants away from their jobs for too long. Service delivery Proper operational performance is ensured only when providers meet or surpass firms service delivery expectations. • 8. Solar Power Vs. Wind Power Have you ever thought about green energy? Well if you have, I am sure that you have heard of solar power and wind power. There are also other forms of green energy, but they are not used as much as solar or wind power, but solar vs, wind power is one the most debated topics in green energy. This topic is controversial because the world is beginning to switch to renewable green energy and people and politicians are debating which energy source they should use. Solar power is a better option than wind power. There are many reasons why solar power is better than wind power. One of the reasons is that solar panels take less maintenance than wind turbines. Standard warranties normally last 25 years; and this includes any repairs and damages that could occur to the solar panel. An example of this is if a tree were to fall onto a group of solar panels from a storm and it was within the 25 year warranty, then the company that made the solar panel would come and repair or replace the broken or damaged panels. Wind turbines have shorter warranties from the manufacturers, and this should make people less certain of their reliability. The solar panel companies also have a guarantee that a solar panel s efficiency won t drop below a certain percentage over its lifespan, this percentage is normally in the range of 85 90% efficiency. Also, solar panels are made of tempered glass which is made to withstand hail and other damaging weather. Solar panels don t have any moving parts like a wind ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The American Revolution came about primarily because the colonists had matured. Their interests and goals were so different and distant from those of the mother country. Local politics, practices, social customs, religious beliefs, and economic interests had gone so far from the English ways. The American Revolution had a tremendous impact not only in The United States, but also in Europe and the rest of the world. The Navigation Acts channeled the flow of colonial raw materials into England and kept foreign goods and vessels out of colonial ports. The Navigation Acts incorporated multiple laws that were created over a period of time. The Acts were passed with the theory of mercantilism, which restricted free trade. They were intended to keep foreign goods and vessels out of colonial ports. The Navigation Act of 1651 banned imported goods from other countries, unless the ship or cargo had an all British crew. The second Act was extended to exports in addition to imports. Four more Acts were passed between the years of 1662 and 1773, which proposed even more restrictions on trade. Before Isaac Newton was born, King Charles I was driven out of London by mobs and had to seek refuge in Nottingham, which was just a few miles away from Woolsthorpe, Newton s soon to be hometown (Guillen, 1995, p. 13). • 16. A Brief Look at Shark Culling Is shark culling okay given the number of shark attacks that have occurred? Recently it seems that the number of shark attacks has increased with seven fatal attacks in the past 3 years in Western Australia (WA). These recent attacks have led the WA Government being granted an exemption to start culling sharks with a catch and kill shark program. A lot of people including scientists and surfers are against this controversial decision. For people to make an informed decision they need to have an understanding of where the shark fits into the marine ecosystem, as well as the reasons presented for the use of shark culling and the arguments given that oppose such extreme measures. The Shark s place in the marine ecosystem is as a predator at the top of the food chain as there is no natural predator of sharks. Sharks are not very fastidious about what they eat but their diet generally consists of seal, crab, squid, lobster and fish. If sharks were to become extinct there would be an ecological cost. The marine life that is the shark s food source would start to overpopulate with nothing to prey on it. One possible reason that sharks are coming closer to shores is that their natural food source is diminishing due to overfishing by humans. To stop sharks from being too near to popular swimming locations, fishermen need to expand or change their hunting areas. One reason for culling sharks is that when there are sharks in populated areas, people s lives are in danger therefore if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Playing with dolls was seen as a girl s activity, and that was definitely not seen as proper behavior for a boy. Such relationships and activities were looked down upon in disgust, even worse they were prohibited! Churchill had a girl play Edward to expose his true nature. Being a gay at that time and place, was not an option because of all the stereotypical aspects attached to it. One could only imagine the deep sorrow Edward had to go through to fulfill the stereotypical expectations of a man, when he truly felt like the girl playing his character. • 23. Elephant the movie Essay Gus Van Sant s Elephant was at once critically praised and denounced by both film reviewers and filmgoers alike. The cinematography takes you on a waltz throughout a seemingly typical day at an unnamed high school, stopping through the journey to focus on the stereotypes of school. The jock, the quirky artist, the cliqued girls, the skateboarder, they are all represented and representative of his film. Van Sant created a film, seemingly without a staunch opinion on the horrors of the Columbine shootings. Van Sant s film aestheticizes the reality of high school, focusing on its beauty and character, and ignoring the underlying grime inherent on most campuses. The halls and yard of the school are kept in immaculate condition, staying unnaturally clean, almost sterile for a school. Despite this seeming glorification of the building, the hallways are kept as a constant secondary to the sharply focused characters the camera constantly follows. It takes the focus away from the bare walls and empty hallways and places it solely on the students. The film isn t about the location that it occurred, but the people that it happened to. The focus is on the students of the film, both literally and figuratively. The camera seems to never stop moving, save for brief pauses that seem to rest the viewer. There is little extraneous distraction from the characters as they walk down the hall; the only time something distracts from the center of attention is when it is repeated again as the film goes through its several cycles that repeat scenes from different points of view. The film intertwines the lives of its multiple points of view. They all seem to be unrelated, but they ultimately tie together in a cohesive storyline that unravels into its unavoidable conclusion. In December 1944, Prime Minister Winston Churchill stood on the world s stage and announced the largest forced population transfer in human history the ethnic cleansing of post war Germany (Douglas). Up until the 1970 s or so, resources written in English on this particular involuntary migration were nonexistent; even in Europe, the subject is considered taboo. At about the same time the Cold War was getting cold, an increasing number of German expellees began to speak up about their forgotten holocaust. Many created organizations that demanded compensation for their suffering, especially in West Germany. Still, the Allies kept the discussions to a mum; some (such as Czechoslovakia) continued to justify the cleansing as a fit punishment for Nazi crimes and refused to acknowledge the atrocity as anything more. After the fall of the U.S.S.R. and the reconciliation of East and West Germany, the subject became a slightly more open topic. After the Nuremberg Trials in 1945 concluded that forced immigration was a crime against humanity, the issue could no longer be ignored... or so it seemed. Today ethnic cleansing is considered a crime against international law, although some consider the forced expulsion of Germans after WWII to have been a legal procedure at the time (seeing as such crimes were not addressed by the UN Declaration of Human Rights nor the European Convention on Human Rights in 1950). The expulsion continues to make appearances in modern politics, especially in Europe; for instance, a declaration in 1997 by the Czech Republic has effectively closed the topic and attempted to restrict legal claims made by German descendants ( Germans Expelled ).
