Art Spiegelman s Use Of Animals In Maus I And Maus Propaganda
Maus I and Maus II by Art Spiegelman are graphic novels that describe the horrors that his father
Vladek experienced during the period of time known as the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a time
of extreme racial and ethnic prejudice in which over six million Jews died, not counting the other
groups such as Gypsies and Homosexual who were also slain by the Nazi party. The Jews were
killed because they were perceived as being a subhuman layer of the Nazi Society (United States
Holocaust Memorial Museum). However Art Spiegelmanprovides as interesting asset to his novels
in the form of the illustrations provided in the graphic novels. The pictures portray all the
characters as different animals based on their nationality or Religion. However Art... Show more

The opposite of what the Nazis believed, Spiegelman has anthropomorphic character with their
human thoughts rather than humans who had animal thoughts. His characters have human
actions and thoughts, and perceive themselves as human. This is also proven in Maus I when
Vladek and his wife Anja are hiding in the cellar of a friend. While in the cellar the two are being
pestered by rats. To stop Anja from having a panic attack from being close to the vermin Vladek
claims Those aren t rats. They re very small. one just ran over my hand before. They re just mice
( Maus I, 157). This shows that in the world of Art Spiegelman s Maus animals such as rats and
mice coexist with the characters that are drawn as rats and mice. Spiegelman also uses masks to
help parody the story. The masks in the story are worn by Vladek, and Anja to hide in plain site in
Nazi occupied Poland. The characters are illustrated with a pig head, with a very visible string
around the mask for the reader to see. This parodies the idea of animals living the Holocaust with
the Jews pretending to be Polish. The masks represent their ability to hide within the Polish
community, and assimilate with their culture. Therefore allowing Art Spiegelman to Parody both
the Nazi mindset and his own

T.S Eliot
From His Life to the Page T. S. Eliot s work was greatly influenced by his life. There was a basic
pattern in his works that corresponded with the events in his life. This pattern brought about many
changes and phases in his poetry. Even Eliot s attitude was reflected in his work. A quote from T.
S. Eliot: The Man and His Work states, Eliot was a man with the highest standards in his poetry,
his critisism, and his behavior to others. ( Spender 34). Perhaps much of this can be attributed to
his birth toward the end of the Victorian Era. Eliot s background also had a major effect on his
writing style. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on September 26, 1888. Though Eliot was born in
America, he spent much of his life in England. Although... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eliot published many religious works including Idea of a Christian Society. The plays that Eliot
wrote in this period reflected a spiritual content as well as many journeys and tasks. His works
also became more political. He spoke of how corrupt and apathetic the new age had become. His
new political views were probably sparked from his life as a British citizen. Analyzation of Eliot
s life provides great insight on why his writing was divided into these four periods. Eliot s
demeanor was also evident in his work. Many said that Eliot often had a very serious look about
him. He was very sophisticated in his speech and actions, and when he was humorous, it was in
a very strange way. He often would make remarks that made very little sense. Both sides of his
personality showed up in his work. Most of his writing was serious in nature, but sometimes it
was amusing such as his Old Possum s Book of Practical Cats. Many people know of this work
because the very popular musical Cats was based on it. Both of these were filled with nonsense
humor. Eliot s influences made a huge impact on his writing. He was completely immersed in
the works from Greek and Roman literature, as well as modern and medieval Europe. Eliot also
greatly love the Rubiyat of Omar Khayyam. Much of this influence was evident in the work. One
of Eliot s greatest influences was Ezra Pound. Eliot met Ezra Pound in 1914, and that meeting
proved to be of great significance to Eliot s writing career. Ezra

Importance Of America s Gifts To My Generation
If what you loved was taken away from you because of where you lived how would you feel?
America s gifts to my generation is doing what I love and freedom of expression. I feel this way
because people sacrifice their life just so I can have freedom to express myself and to do what I
love. In America I can play any sports I want or I can watch any sports I want. America lets me play
sports I want to and they do not force me to play a certain sport. I can play basketball and nobody
can say no or force me to play another sport. I could go and watch a basketball game if I wanted to
and had a ticket and nobody could say no. If you wanted to watch a basketball game and you lived
in Russia, you would not be able to. Americans have the freedom to

Analysis Of Madame X
Abstract Madame X, also known as the Portrait of Madame X, is a famous painting made by
John Singer Sargent in the year 1884. A popular portrait too many, due to her mystery and
anonymous state, was once a highly controversial piece to many. As soon as John released this
painting in The Salon , one of the most popular art exhibits, the painting was greatly criticized due
to the model seeming to be flaunting and over conceited. Despite the initial negativity from the
French crowd, Madame X would soon become one of the most popular portraits in history. Now
sitting in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, this portrait has gained much praise and
appreciation from many art lovers around the world who find beauty in her mysterious figure.

The Emergence of Check Imaging Technologies and the Impacts of to Banks and Consumer and
Small Business Customers
Thanks in part to advancements in check imaging technology; financial institutions have an
opportunity to make major changes to outdated check processing systems. Bank executives are
weighing the benefits with the potential risks of updating a system that has been virtually
untouched since the 1970 s.
These emerging imaging technologies have the potential to remove the high transportations costs
associated with transporting physical checks and reduce the flow time (float) it takes between
check deposit and funds availability.

Lastly, all of these shortcomings to the conventional system prolong the time it takes for a customer
to deposit a check and receive the funds. Ultimately, any process improvements must create a
positive customer experience and reduce added exposure to both the customer and the banks.
A Closer Look At Check Imaging Truncation
With advancements in check imaging capabilities and Check 21 legislation (allowing for banks to
us a duplicate image of a check in lieu of the physical check), banks now have the opportunity to
address the process pain points that have plagued its check processing systems for years. For this
analysis, the focus will be on the various check processing imaging solutions that can optimize the
conventional check processing system. While the ACH system can be considered a bottleneck for
some banks, there have been made incremental improvements over time. Further, the ACH system
improvements requires the cooperation and partnership with the Federal Reserve and the governing
body for electric payments, The Electronic Payments Association.
Check imaging technology is a popular solution among financial institutions because each bank can
apply the technologies differently to fit its current systems. Check imaging is the process of
making a digital image of the check and using that image to

Group Mind
The Group Mind
People change to the atmosphere. If you are with a friend you can watch how this attitude changes
from when he is with you to when he is set in the group mind around other peers. You can also
look at yourself. Humans act on their natural instincts and if you look at yourself and how you act
when you are alone compared to how you act in the group mind setting, you will see that you
almost dumb yourself down to a level that you think will help you fit in with your friends. If we
could just open our eyes, we would see how repetitive and dumb we think inside of our group
minds. When you are alone you think about things that are natural to everybody, such as how to
improve yourself. Your time alone is the best medicine for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Then when I was with my friends it completely changed into dirty, mindless jokes and wanting to
do things that I would never want my parents to know about. I noticed that no matter who I was
around I found it hard to just be myself and the fact that I have been unconsciously doing it all
this time made me think of what it would be like if I was just myself or different from what
everybody thinks of me. Unfortunately, I never could bring up the courage to be different, so I
started to change some of the little things that I did around my friends. I began to lose the
interest of my friends and they didn t invite me to as many things or call me to go hang out.
Surprisingly, I was ok with it. Changing the way that I acted with my friends made me realize
that they were never really my friends. They just accepted me because I wore cool clothes and
talked about the stuff that was important to the group. I know now that they are all just
acquaintances that I have had some fun times with. As Doris Lessing says in her essay, When
we re in a group mind, we tend to think as that group does. It is the hardest thing in the world to
maintain an individual dissent opinion as a member of a group. The world is filled with group
minds, not only in people but in societies as well. If the majority of a society takes a stance on a
subject the rest that don t actually agree in their mind will unconsciously conform to the group
mind and agree. The group mind is very

The Legacy of John F. Kennedy Essay
Our Fellow American
The late president John Fitzgerald Kennedy once said, Sure it s a big job; but I don t know
anyone who can do it better than I can ( John F. Kennedy BrainyQuote.com). Kennedy was a
young and fresh political figure at the time of his election in 1960. The thirty fifth president of
the United States was born May 29, 1917, in Brookline, Massachusetts. He was the youngest
president ever, as well as the first and only Roman Catholic president (Bass, et al.). His
presidency was shortened by an assassin on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. Kennedy
preceded his presidency with a term in the U.S. House of Representatives (1947 1953) and a term
in the U.S. Senate (1953 1961) ( John F. Kennedy History.com). Kennedy, a... Show more content

Kennedy went on, however, to risk his political career for these same rights. In response to an
outburst at the University of Mississippi after the admittance of a black student, the president
said from the oval office on June 11, 1963, It ought to be possible, in short, for every American
to enjoy the privileges of being American without regard to his race or his color. In short, every
American ought to have the right to be treated as he would wish to be treated, as one would wish
his children to be treated. Despite Kennedy s assassination shortly after this proclamation, the
Civil Rights Act passed through Congress just weeks later under President Johnson. As JFK
intended, the Civil Rights Act afforded equal rights to whites and blacks alike (Kozak). Kennedy
is remembered for following through on promises made during his campaign. One of Kennedy s
memorable feats in domestic affairs was the advancement of our space program (Armstrong,
Lovell, Cernan). In a 1961 address to Congress he said,
First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is
out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth. No single space project
in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long range
exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish. We propose to
accelerate the development of the appropriate lunar space craft.

B-2 Spirit Essay
The Northrop (later Northrop Grumman) B 2 Spirit, also known as the Stealth Bomber, is an
American heavy penetration strategic bomber, featuring low observable stealth technology
designed for penetrating dense anti aircraft defenses; it is a flying wing design with a crew of
two.[1][4] The bomber can deploy both conventional and thermonuclear weapons, such as eighty
500 lb (230 kg) class (Mk 82) JDAM Global Positioning System guided bombs, or sixteen 2,400 lb
(1,100 kg) B83 nuclear bombs. The B 2 is the only acknowledged aircraft that can carry large air to

portion of the 1980s dramatically reduced the need for the aircraft, which was designed with the
intention of penetrating Soviet airspace and attacking high value targets. During the late 1980s
and 1990s, Congress slashed plans to purchase 132 bombers to 21. In 2008, a B 2 was destroyed
in a crash shortly after takeoff, though the crew ejected safely.[5] A total of 20 B 2s remain in
service with the United States Air Force, which plans to operate the B 2 until 2058.[6]
The B 2 is capable of all altitude attack missions up to 50,000 feet (15,000 m), with a range of
more than 6,000 nautical miles (6,900 mi; 11,000 km) on internal fuel and over 10,000 nautical

aircraft designed to have advanced stealth technology after the Lockheed F 117 Nighthawk attack

combat, dropping conventional, non nuclear ordnance in the Kosovo War in 1999. It later served in

Swat Team Research Paper
America was first introduced to the first SWAT teams in the year of 1966. SWAT, which first
stood for Special Weapons Attack Team, and then was later changed to Special Weapons and
Tactics, was founded by Daryl Gates who was a police commander for the Los Angeles Police
Department. SWAT teams are different from regular law enforcement in the fact that they are far
more advanced and handle far more advanced and dangerous situations. They use more powerful
weapons and more experienced policing tactics. They could be considered the elite members of law
enforcement. SWAT teams do not just deal with the normal criminal. They handle the extreme
criminals who often defy law enforcement. SWAT teams were founded in an effort the lower the
massively high crime rate that was dominating the late 1990s. These specially trained police
officers are an example of the paramilitary policing which also first arose during this time period.

Reform Movements in the United States Sought to Expand...
As Americans entered an era of transition and instability, they sought to expand democratic ideals
in the society. In response to sudden changes occurring and traditional values being challenged,
various reform movements during 1825 1850 began to focus on democratic ideals. The rise of
religious revivals, movements for equal rights and protecting liberties of different social groups,
want to advance society technologically, and desire to bring order and control helped reform the
society to live up to the nation s founding ideals. Teaching them (I don t get who them is) the habits

The Transcendentalist movement, founded by Ralph Waldo Emerson was populated by his
essay Nature, as well as other works such as Henry David Thoreau s Nature. The increasing
quality and affordability of such books as well as newspapers, with new perspectives and
philosophies printed by new machines, allowed the common people access to new knowledge.
Society was now exposed to knowledge such as: philosophy, current events, and political
information which brought up the level of education of the common man. Not only were books
made cheaper and more available, an abundance of higher quality goods and services such as
better foods, clothes, and a better transportation system now became available to the society. As

of the Age and the expansion of democratic ideals. Even artists of the Hudson

Who Is J. Alfred Prufrock Indecisive
J. Alfred Prufrock is a slightly older gentleman who frequently visits the darker side of town. He
often accompanies the ladies to tea, but never seems to be very comfortable with his social
standing within the group. Perhaps it is due to his failing physique , or perhaps he simply
dislikes the gossiping conversations. It appears, to me, that he puts on a facade to face the people
he meets in the streets in order to secure acceptance from his peers. Prufrock s greatest obstacle in
his life is his indecisive nature. He wishes to reveal his feelings, but constantly tells himself, In a

Symbolism In Ernest Hemingway s A Farewell To Arms
World War I began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. Ernest
Hemingway s novel, A Farewell to Arms, follows the life of the Italian Speaking, American
Frederic Henry as he joins the war on behalf of the Italians, is injured by a bombshell, and flees
after his recovery. In his most popular novel, A Farewell to Arms
, Hemingway utilizes the motif of
whorehouses, sporadic syntax during Henry s rampant drunkenness, and understatement when
Henry encounters death to illustrate how war morally decays the ordinary man.
Throughout A Farewell to Arms, Hemingway exemplifies the purpose of whorehouses as a
distraction for the soldiers and the role of women in times of war. In the beginning, the motif of
whorehouses is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By implementing a confusing syntax during Henry s inebriated state, Hemingway reveals how the
war affects the morality of Henry s mind. After his hospitalization from an explosion, Henry s
friends bring him alcohol as a get well present. Henry has a drink and argues about Rome with
Rinaldi in his drunken state: Roma is feminine, said Rinaldi. It cannot be the father. Who is the
father, then, the Holy Ghost? Don t blas pheme. I wasn t blaspheming, I was asking for
information. You are drunk, baby. Who made me drunk? I made you drunk because I love you and
because America is in the war. (Hemingway 71)
Through this ambiguous sentence structure, it is difficult to tell who says, comments, or argues
with who. By utilizing this perplexing syntax Hemingway shows how being drunk affects Henry s
state of mind. Henry is unable to tell right from wrong, or if the comment made is actually
blasphemy or not. Henry s mindstate is altered, as evident by Hemingway s use of muddled syntax,
as a result of the alcohol; in addition, Henry only got drunk because he was given alcohol after his
injuries in the war. Thus, the war morally decayed Henry s mind through alcohol to the point of not
being able to discern right from wrong. The war not only numbs Henry emotionally through alcohol
but also through his encounters with death. Hemingway s use of understatement when Henry
encounters death reveals how the war progressively deteriorated

What Every American Should Know By Eric Liu
Interpretative essay
What every American should know by Eric Liu thoroughly examines the issue of cultural literacy
and its place in modern America. It takes on a convincing argument against E.D. Hirsch s book on
the same which included some 5000 things that he thought define cultural literacy and every
American should know. Liu argues that America has changed over time, becoming more
multicultural, and to capture the cultural literacy of the country, no one person should sit down and
come up with what they think everyone else should know. Instead he suggests that in order to
capture the view of the nation, every American should be involved in the making of the list. The
most engaging part of this article is Liu s idea that this new list that is crowd sourced should
always change according to the times. It should not be cast in stone because things in this day
and age change really fast; what is a hit this month will be old news in the next one. This is what
cultural literacy really is; keeping up with what is going on around you and being open to learn
new things as they emerge. This can also be said of education; in order to stay educated in any
field, you have to be in the know of in terms of new developments.
The conversation and debates on cultural literacy should continue in every place in America since
it helps us to understand and be tolerant of other cultures around us (Gay 2010). When we are
familiar with all or some of the things that define America as a culture,

this profession for man and society. It is no coincidence that everybody who exercise this profession

requires a constant struggle, who leads to professional development. But how does it achieve? The
professional development starts and ends from schoolclass. Every teacher is confronted with
human resources and invests on it. Examines each student as individually and as a whole.
Identifies specificities, knowledge gaps and skills, which students have, and try to adjust your
learning and teaching to become more efficient. To achieve this required a conscious updating of
his professional knowledge and improving of his professional competences. Occasionally organized
various courses / workshops related to education. These workshops are an opportunity for teachers
to enhance their knowledge and presenting new teaching methods, which can utilize in the
classroom. It also organized training sessions or seminars in which teachers and / or researchers
presented the results of their research which took part in their schools, and discuss problems of
education. Through this constructive discussion everyone

The Gap Between Spoken Speakers And Non Fluent Speakers Of...
Carol Woodard, Guy Haskins, Grace Schaefer, and Linda Smolen address the issue of bridging
the gap between fluent speakers and non fluent speakers of English in classrooms in the United
States. The article explains how an urban school had tested the children in kindergarten and the
results of the test showed a nearly two year lag in oral language development (2004, p.92). The
large gap in oral language development of the less fluent speakers can be detrimental to their
education. The school has to try to bridge the gap quickly in the early years of the student s
education; in order to catch the students up to the developmentally appropriate level of oral
language before it s too late. If the school is unable to bridge the gap the less fluent speakers may
be delayed in their reading and writing skills.
The school implemented a talk table to bridge the gap in oral language development (Woodard,
Haskins, Schaefer, Smolen, 2004, p. 92). The research method the school decided to use was
observations of the students progress, surveys, and pretest and posttest. The teacher in charge of
each classroom was responsible for carefully observing and recording the students progress
throughout the program. The teachers utilized their state s curriculum standards as a grading scale
of how well the students were doing and to monitor the progress they were making. Close to fifty
teachers participated in the research project. Teachers had to go through a special course in the Let s

John Kotter s Eight Stage Change Model
Abstract
This paper discusses John Kotter s Eight Stage Change Model and how it can be used as a guide
when implementing change within an organization. The roles of various stakeholders including
senior and emerging leaders, managers and employees throughout the eight stages are defined. In
addition, factors which can contribute to a failed organization change initiative are discussed.
Transforming an organization from a sub optimizing enterprise of independently functioning
departments to an organization that embraces cross functional teams and customer centric
integrated processes that focuses on delivering quality products and services requires a well defined
and implemented plan of action. In addition, transforming an ... Show more content on

It is at this stage that employees either accept or reject the organizational transformation. Sincere
belief in the transformation initiatives by employees is essential for success. Stage Five of the
Kotter Model allows for the employees to take risks or make changes to internal process that are
impeding the transformation effort. The success of the implementation of Stages One through Four
will provide employees the confidence and trust they need that will allow them to make suggestions
or change legacy processes that will add to the success of the transformation. Stage Six of the Kotter
Model is designed for the achievement of milestones throughout the course of the organizational
transformation. Stage Six includes creating short term wins that allows the organization to see
improvements and success which builds momentum (Kotter, 2007, p. 4). The momentum
experienced from the success of the short term wins could result in the expansion of the vision as
describe in Stage Seven of the Kotter Model. In addition, it is possible during Stage Seven of the
Kotter Model that departments, cross functional teams or employees can actually uncover
additional opportunities and initiate additional process improvements that support the vision of the

After four hundred years of indecisive Ottoman rule, and three decades fighting the mandate of the
French, the many diverse peoples of Syria finally could call Syria their own. Yet, independence
was not synonymous with peace. Without a common enemy, the Syrian people remembered their
differences and began to squabble amongst themselves. Even now, seven decades after the
formation of the Syrian Arab Republic, peace is yet but a far flung dream. In June of 2000, then
President Hafez al Assad, of the previous Ba ath Party, passed away and his title was left, through
an unfortunate accident, in the hands of his second, less determined son, Bashar al Assad. With his

My Day Last Year, I Played A Soccer Player Essay
One day last year, I played a soccer game. How two kids slid at me, not knowing what I was
going to get myself into that day and how it would change my life. This is a story, of how an
injury impacted my dream of becoming a soccer player. In return, that injury shed light in another
direction for me.
Saturday, early morning, birds were chirping, we had the earliest game that day. I arrived early,
as well as other players. As always, we greeted each other and began to complain how early it
was and how tired we were. Our coached arrived and we began to warm up before the game and
we started to do high knees and lunges. We also, did quick sprints back and forth and we
gathered in a circle and stretched our hamstrings, quads, calf s, and hips. We began to huddle up
and our coach gave us the same generic speech. That we need to communicate and work
together. He began to choose the starting lineups; I was starting off as middle, my brother as
defense and so on and so forth. We started to line up on the filed prepared to play. We were ready
to win the game, most of all just to play. This game was also a friendly match, which there is
technically no competition for anything, no trophy, no medals just competing for the love of the
game and as well winning.
The referee blew the whistle and we began with the ball. We started to play with it. I always
receive the ball second, after the forward passes it back to me I turn around and passed the ball to
one of my defensive players. We

The Five Eighty Eight By John Cheever
What personality traits do we display with our actions? Our personalities are shaped by our life
experiences and the people around us. They re shaped by our upbringing, the way our parents
treated us and the many thing we learned from them. They re shaped by our past experiences
whether a being on the receiving end of a kind deed by another person, or the receiving end of a
gross injustice. These experiences shape our personalities and in turn shape how we view the
world and treat those around us. John Cheever s The Five Forty Eight is the story about a
woman trying to put herself back together after being broken, albeit in a slightly questionable
way. Miss Dent is a woman who previously spent 8 months in a hospital, and is still clearly a bit
unhinged. She is a fragile woman who becomes attached to Mr. Blake after he hires her as his
secretary. Mr. Blake sees how vulnerable she is and takes advantage of her, afterwards having
an employee fire her and keep her from seeing him. Months later Miss Dent stalks Mr. Blake,
cornering him on the Five Forty Eight. Mr. Blake is terrified, but Miss Dent claims she will not
kill him as long as he listens to her. After Miss Dent has made him feel the way he made her, she
leaves him on the platform; weeping as he made her, but unharmed. Many aspects of Mr. Blake s
personality are displayed throughout the story as we observe his thoughts and the way he treats
others. Two powerful personality traits dominate Mr. Blake in John Cheever s

After The Wedding Movie Analysis
The movie, After the Wedding, is a very complex movie that displays a series of events
surrounding a wedding and continuing to show what most movies fail to depict in their
Hollywood visions of a good movie, what happens AFTER the picture perfect wedding. The
movie involves a man who is attempting to open a safe haven for children in a poverty stricken
community. While he has continuously failed previous projects, Jacob is determined to help the
children he has become close to in order to provide the necessities they have been lacking for
years, including simplistic things like immunizations and medications for common sicknesses.
When Jacob found a promising source of income to bring his business to an amazing start, he
leaves what he considers family behind to begin what he had hoped for. Upon arrival, Jacob soon
realizes that the situation at hand is a lot more complicated than he anticipated. As requested by the
donor, Jacob attends a wedding he soon finds is his own child s. Jacob attempts to provide the
children he loves at home with what they so desperately need, but the terms of the grant make
obstacles he cannot overcome and please everyone involved, including himself. Throughout the
movie, there is apparent differences in the society surrounding Jacob based on the presence of
money, education and power. These factors have created two completely different communities and
is comparable to real life situations. In every country, state and even citythere are

Following what was arguably the most turbulent time in American history; Reconstruction had far
reaching effects on a number of areas of life in the United States. In the Deep South, one of the
clearest impacts could be seen on racial relations, specifically between whites and newly freed
African Americans. Legally, dramatic changes had been made at the federal level, providing
African Americans with a host of rights that had never been offered them before. It was no wonder,
then, that former slave owners in the South rejected these changes and rights, taking whatever steps
necessary to keep African Americans down. The dramatic changes that took place in terms of race
relations between African Americans and whites following Reconstruction... Show more content on

Legally, the passage of the Fifteenth Amendment just a few years after the close of the Civil War,
African American men had the right to vote according to the United States Constitution. However,
racial relations in the south had deteriorated so greatly that even such constitutionally protected
elements of their lives were unable to survive. Whites passed a number of laws designed to
disenfranchise African American men, knowing that without the right to vote, the voices of newly
freed slaves would not be heard. These laws included such measures as literacy tests, poll taxes,
property qualifications, and so called grandfather clauses that denied an individual the right to vote
if their grandfather did not vote himself. Race relations in the south had deteriorated so rapidly that
even something as basic as voting, something that was to be provided to African American men
according to the United States Constitution, was denied them ( The state... , 2011). As individuals
living in the north became increasingly disinterested with the plight of African Americans in the
south, a political change was made, one that would alter the racial relations between whites and
blacks for generations. In 1896, the United States Supreme Court issued a ruling in Plessy v.
Ferguson that would set the stage for continued segregation in the American south with three simple
words: separate but equal. When the Supreme Court ruled that separate facilities for whites and

Effective Leadership Approaches From Biblical Perspective...
Introduction
Effective leadership approaches from a biblical perspective consist of God s nature in his
manifested character. Christian leaders are willing to pay the price to lead in Christ s affliction.
Paul said there is a price to pay in order to lead and Jesus reminded us, Remember what I told
you: A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.
If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also (John 15:20, New International Version).
Christian leaders need core attributes of God s styles and approaches, support and linkage from
scriptures, and knowledge of his leadership models of truth for effective leadership. However,
these perspectives will gave me a better appreciation and insight of who God is and who I can be
with his guidance.
Core Attributes
There are many people in scripture that God has placed in leadership roles. Jesus himself, David,
Moses, Paul, Peter, Abraham and many others are some of those leaders. There are core
attributes discussed in the lecture that personally reflect my opinion of what an effective leader
of Christ needs such as, a shared vision, model of the way, empowerment of others, challenge of
the process, and encouragement of the heart. Leaders establish a model of the way others should
be treated and how goals should be pursued, with standards and examples of what others should
follow by exemplifying God s example. Christian leaders inspire a shared vision to make a

Statistics in Research
Definition of statistics:
Statistics is the science of learning from data, and of measuring, controlling, and communicating
uncertainty; and it thereby provides the navigation essential for controlling the course of scientific
and societal advances (Davidian, M. and Louis, T. A., 10.1126/science.1218685).
Statisticians apply statistical thinking and methods to a wide variety of scientific, social, and
business endeavors in such areas as astronomy, biology, education, economics, engineering,
genetics, marketing, medicine, psychology, public health, sports, among many. Many economic,
social, political, and military decisions cannot be made without statistical techniques, such as the

Statisticians recommend that experiments compare (at least) one new treatment with a standard
treatment or control, to allow an unbiased estimate of the difference in treatment effects. 2. Design
of experiments, using blocking to reduce the influence of confounding variables, and randomized
assignment of treatments to subjects to allow unbiased estimates of treatment effects and
experimental error. At this stage, the experimenters and statisticians write the experimental protocol
that shall guide the performance of the experiment and that specifies the primary analysis of the
experimental data. 3. Performing the experiment following the experimental protocol and analyzing
the data following the experimental protocol. 4. Further examining the data set in secondary
analyses, to suggest new hypotheses for future study. 5. Documenting and presenting the results of
the study. In contrast, an observational study does not involve experimental manipulation. This
type of study typically uses a survey to collect observations about the area of interest and then
performs statistical analysis.
Statistics is applied in the following ways in research: 1. In science
A very important component of the Scientific Method is the statistical analysis of your collected
data or observations. How you analyze the data, whether done correctly or incorrectly, will
ultimately determine the conclusions from your research.

In this essay I will be commenting on how Alice Munro used her story Child s Play to show the

story shows how back in the fifties people with mental disabilities were treated like they are less

Injustice In My Oedipus Complex
Hence, Greene portrays Jerome as a warden with no fear of troubles to mollify the anger inside
him for what he suffered from his friends. Looking at Jerome, people can visualize a part of
Greene s life. Another point needed to mention is that Greene was sent to London for
psychotherapy due to his mental and emotional problems (Encyclopedia of world biography,
2017). Just like Greene, Jerome also has mental illness or even depression which is clearly proven
by his reaction when he heard about his father s new. Jerome was unfeeling about the death of his
father, he even did not cry or surprise at all. Certainly, the imagery of Jerome not only exposes the
aspiration of the author but reflect the inmost feelings of him.
Additionally, each author has their own way setting characters and telling the story either by the
third point of view or the first point of view to make the best effect on readers. The meaning of

Direct Democracy Vs Representative Democracy Essay
Direct Democracy vs Representative Democracy
The term Democracy is derived from two Greek words, demos, meaning people, and kratos,
meaning rule. These two words form the word democracy which means rule by the people.
Aristotle, and other ancient Greek political philosophers, used the phrase, `the governors are to be
the governed , or as we have come to know it, `rule and be ruled in turn .
The two major types of democracy are Representative Democracy and Direct
Democracy. Clearly the arguments for and against each form of democracy are plentiful. However,

It is not even thinkable that all citizens will agree on what good is. Rousseau recognized this and
accepted a term of majority rule. Those who voted against a policy which is found to be the best for
the general, must have been thinking of personal gains, rather than the gains of the entire society.
The feature which distinguishes direct democracy from other forms of government is the idea of
agreement and the key to agreement is discussion. It is impossible to reach an agreement without
discussion, because it is not right to think that everybody will have the same opinion on all matters.
But, it is very possible, that through discussion an agreement could be reached by all members.
Representation, on the other hand allows a select few to make decisions in their own best interest,
which is not necessarily the best interest of the society.
However, direct democracy is not the perfect method to produce a union of the community. For a
direct democracy to work, face to face communication between all members of the community is
needed. The only way this is possible is to meet in large groups. Due to the fear of high tension,
many citizens
will not participate in these large group meeting. So in order for these fearful people to voice their
opinions they must get together in smaller, less tensions groups, where they are not as timid to say
as they wish to see happen.
A direct democracy can only work in a small group, so as a form of government for an

Introduction Dentistry is concerned with the health problems that relate to teeth, mouth, and the
gums; it deals with correction and care of dental diseases. These aspects define the work of a dentist

In the past Spain, age of exploration, spices and other imported goods from Asia was the symbol of
how wealth they were. Therefore, lots of traders seek for trading routes through land. However, It
wasn t easy because of the capability of Ottoman Empire. After they bewitched the Constantinople
in 1453, they blocked the route from Europe to Asia, which limited the amount of trading.
Subsequently traders were forced to search for another route, which is the sea route. Though,
exploring needed funding for ships, crews and supplies. Only countries that had strong monarchy
were able to take the risk of funding a big amount of money, even there was no guarantee that the
ship sufficiently returns to them. King and Queen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is a trading of slave, which includes the participants from America, Europe and Africa. It occurred
in Atlantic Ocean between middle of 15th to end of 19th centuries. Africans were traded as a
slave in exchange of goods imported from other country, such as alcohol, iron, tobacco, rum,
gunpowder, clothes, beer and guns. Countries traded slaves due to their needs of workers in
harvesting goods, for instance sugar cane, raw material, cotton, tobacco, and coffee. Those
slaves who worked for farming or producing goods were called field slave. Some enslaved
Africans were worked as house slave, who did the task such as butler, maid, and chef. Around 12
to 15 millions of Africans were traded during this period. However, lots died in the middle of
unendurable voyage. Portuguese was the first one to trade slave in Africa. They first enslaved
Americans, although African slaves were cheaper and had less risk to be escaped due to African s
empty knowledge about geography in Americas and Europe. Other European country and Americas
follow after Portuguese, and then England became advanced country for slave trade by 18th
century. Africans that brought back to Europe and Americas were sold in auction. Spanish,
Portuguese, English, French and Dutch were buying

Rugby Team Reflection
Since the spring of my sophomore year, I have been tasked with leading a true motley crew. By
others this crew is called the Edina Rugby Club; however, I think of each and every one one of
these young men as brothers. Without the sport of rugby, I would not have had the great fortune of
meeting so many teammates of different distinctive personalities, backgrounds and ethnicity. There
are kids from the high schoolband to the math club to the varsity football team who make up this
crew. Given the responsibility to lead these young men, I have grown as a teammate and also as
a human being. I have developed the ability to respect everyone, regardless of who they are,
where they are from, and what they believe in. I learn from these young men and let them teach
me different things about each of their cultures that without rugby I might never have learned.
When I consider each teammate, despite different ethnicities and backgrounds, I see that they
are no different than me. I have learned to respect people not for where they come from or what
they believe in, but for who they are and how they conduct themselves as a young man. With that
being said, I still have the utmost respect for each individual s personal beliefs and history.
However, as a leader I feel that if we can get by the stereotypical norms of categorizing people we
will find ourselves not only having greater success as leaders but as a society as a whole.
Ultimately, those who lead are responsible for teaching the

Aschenbach s Ethos In Anthony
follows him everywhere, just like how Aschenbach will become obsessed with Tadzio and will
follow him everywhere (Jalic). Aschenbach sees artistic aesthetic when he looks at Tadzio, but
he doesn t look for an Apollonian form in Tadzio, he looks for a Dionysian form. Aschenbach
compares Tadzio s beauty to the Eros. Eros is a Greek god depicted as a beautiful and carefree
young man. Eros is the god of love and passionate, physical desire (Cartwright). Without warning
[Eros] selects his targets and forcefully strikes at their hearts, bringing confusion and irrepressible
feelings or in the words of Hesiod he loosens the limbs and weakens the mind (Cartwright). This
Dionysian comparison suggests that Aschenbach is giving in more and more to... Show more

Aschenbach likes to think that in their relationship, he would be the boy s mentor. However,
these are not Achenbach s true feelings for Tadzio. He has fallen hopelessly in love with Tadzio
and his Apollonian qualities are trying to make him reason that he only is appreciating the
stunning physical beauty that the boy possesses. But, Aschenbach s inner Dionysian qualities are
coming forward and he is experiencing emotions that he has never experienced before. These
powerful new emotions are making him do things he would not normally do. It may have been
that [Aschenbach] did not wish to return to reality, that he was too much in love with his own
intoxication (Mann 40). Aschenbach is letting his Dionysian qualities take over and experiencing
feelings and indulgences he never let himself have before. He learns Tadzio s schedule and no
longer wished for anything else than to pursue the beloved object that inflamed him (Mann 47).
Whenever Aschenbach watches Tadzio, he is filled with happiness and awe. But when Aschenbach
can t find Tadzio, he is filled with dread and fear. Aschenbach has almost completely relaxed his
ability to control his emotions and is allowing himself to give into erratic

Star Wars Versus Star Trek Essay
Star Wars versus Star Trek. Marvel versus DC. Gandalf versus Dumbledore. Batman versus
Superman. Almost everyone that could be asked could pick a side on these topics and their
even smaller debated parts: Jedi versus Sith, Captain Kirk versus Captain Piccard, etc. Superhero
movies are almost always a hit every year for the summer box office. Except superheroes were
not always everyone s favorite, nor socially accepted in America. This was originally subject
matter that stayed within the confines of a certain social class, the nerds and geeks. Nerd culture
rose within mainstream culture and media through a staunch refusal to be put to the side and
belittled when it did hit big. It has stayed largely and long enough so that most people will tell you
that superheroes and space pilots and all culture is nerd culture now. (Rosenberg, Alyssa)
But something that stung even worse than a towel snap was often getting labeled a nerd or a geek.
Ryan Britt opens up his series of essays Luke Skywalker Can t Read and Other Geeky Truths
talking about being in middle school in 1994 in the boys locker room. Being called queer and loser
were common but the label of nerd or geek was something even worse. Little over 20 years ago
such words were not quirky little things you used to describe yourself as would be used now. Nerd
is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as someone who is a foolish or contemptible person who lacks
social skills or is boringly studious. The image of a

Anna Wintour Research Paper
Anna Wintour is an influential and a powerful leader. She has a new nickname as Nuclear
Wintour because of her critical and bossy. She had a strong opinion and clear perspective. Her

because she is always changing her work that employees do for the best outcome of the

want Vogue to be pacy, sharp, and sexy, I m not interested in the super rich or infinitely leisured. I

Broken Windows Theory Essay
An individual is a production of his or her environment and context and can their actions can be
easily effected. The concept is brought up and examined in Malcolm Gladwell s book The
Power of Context: The Rise and Fall of New York City Crime. The idea is shown in real
examples in both Leslie Bell s book Hard to Get: Twenty Something Women and the Paradox of
Sexual Freedom and Jean Twenge An Army of One: Me. The concept that one is affected by his or
her environmentor context is a radical idea due to it going against the traditional concept that an
individual is the product of their upbringing and past experiences. The Broken Windows Theory
as stated in Gladwell s work gives an explanation as to why an individual can be a product of...

This statistic demonstrates how an individual a product of their environment since the Generation
Me college men had a much higher self esteem then the men in 1968 due to the Generation Me
men being in an environment that had such a high(find better word) focus on self esteem. The
individual being a product of environment and context is further demonstrated by this quote from
Twenge During the 1970s when the nation s children shifted from the late Baby Boom to the
early years of GenX kids self esteem declined, probably because of societal instability. Rampant
divorce, a wobble economy, soaring crime rates, and swinging singles culture made the 1970s a
difficult time to be a kid. (Twenge 493). The children of the 70s were a product of the context of
the time which was unstable and un nurturing for children and it caused their self esteems to be
lower than previous generations and future generations. Generation Me has a very high self esteem
and can be borderline narcissistic according to Twenge due to the constant reminder of the self
being most important. This idea of being in an environment where there is a constant reminder of
something causing that thing to effect the individual is shown in Malcolm Gladwell s work,
instead of being self esteem it is a new

Machiavelli s Film Mr. Smith Goes To Washington
NiccolГІ Machiavelli was notorious for his actions and writings as a politician and philosopher,
among many other political and humanitarian titles. He lived in a time period during which Italy
was rife with political conflict, with city states battling each other for power. Machiavelli formated
specific opinions based on his experiences and what he witnessed of others whilst being in and out
of the throes of Italian government. He ended up writing one of his most famous works, The Prince,
in an attempt to return back to power. Within this work, he analyzes the complexities of
governance in a sort of how to guide style meant for a would be ruler. The significance of his
analysis comes from his unsentimental and realistic view of human nature... Show more content on

The politics of our government today have become increasingly corrupted, which plays to
Machiavelli s disbelief in a more benevolent human nature. In the film Mr. Smith Goes to
Washington, a young senator truly possesses the honesty and virtuosity that most politicians exude
and gets completely and utterly chewed up and spit out by the governmental system. When trying
to put a bill into motion, his political comrades fail to support him and betray him in order to
maintain their self interests. Both in films like these and in real life, virtue tends to become a thing
of presentation in order to gain public approval and loyalty. A highly relevant instance of this is
our current presidential election. Both of our candidates have their evident faults, but they have
made appeals to the ethos and pathos of American citizens and tried to come off as virtuous in
their own ways. Social media completely promotes these tactics, and the government s politics and
their connection to appearance over virtue aligns with Machiavelli s principles. It is evident that
the advice he provided to future rulers in The Prince has evolved and ingrained itself within the
very core of America s political

reasons too. When I look in the mirror, I am very happy with the way I look but society does

Tomlinson does have a good point because since she had moved to Harlem, she felt as if she had
an advantage over people because of her unknown lineage and the fact that she can pass for a
white woman. But she still admired the beauty of Harlem as she always had positive and
encouraging things to say about the class of colored people in Harlem. Angela had never seen
such rich culture in Harlem in contrast to what she had seen and/or experienced in Philadelphia.
Her initial observation of Harlem was that Not all of these people, she realized, glancing keenly
at the throngs of black and brown, yellow and white faces about her were servants or underlings or
end men (96). She saw a different culture of black people in Harlem that didn t shame her as a
black woman. This theory does help prove that Tomlinson does have good point when she said that
Fauset strategically placed her main character in a socially heterogeneous background which
allows Angela to see race through a new lens. Some critics have said that Fauset could have done a
better job utilizing the beauty and essence of the Harlem Renaissance Era to have which disagrees
with Tomlinson s theory about Fauset s underline moral of the story. Critics have expressed that
Fauset was only using Angela as a platform to memorialize her own lot in life. There was an article

  • 2. Art Spiegelman s Use Of Animals In Maus I And Maus Propaganda Maus I and Maus II by Art Spiegelman are graphic novels that describe the horrors that his father Vladek experienced during the period of time known as the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a time of extreme racial and ethnic prejudice in which over six million Jews died, not counting the other groups such as Gypsies and Homosexual who were also slain by the Nazi party. The Jews were killed because they were perceived as being a subhuman layer of the Nazi Society (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum). However Art Spiegelmanprovides as interesting asset to his novels in the form of the illustrations provided in the graphic novels. The pictures portray all the characters as different animals based on their nationality or Religion. However Art... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The opposite of what the Nazis believed, Spiegelman has anthropomorphic character with their human thoughts rather than humans who had animal thoughts. His characters have human actions and thoughts, and perceive themselves as human. This is also proven in Maus I when Vladek and his wife Anja are hiding in the cellar of a friend. While in the cellar the two are being pestered by rats. To stop Anja from having a panic attack from being close to the vermin Vladek claims Those aren t rats. They re very small. one just ran over my hand before. They re just mice ( Maus I, 157). This shows that in the world of Art Spiegelman s Maus animals such as rats and mice coexist with the characters that are drawn as rats and mice. Spiegelman also uses masks to help parody the story. The masks in the story are worn by Vladek, and Anja to hide in plain site in Nazi occupied Poland. The characters are illustrated with a pig head, with a very visible string around the mask for the reader to see. This parodies the idea of animals living the Holocaust with the Jews pretending to be Polish. The masks represent their ability to hide within the Polish community, and assimilate with their culture. Therefore allowing Art Spiegelman to Parody both the Nazi mindset and his own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. T.S Eliot From His Life to the Page T. S. Eliot s work was greatly influenced by his life. There was a basic pattern in his works that corresponded with the events in his life. This pattern brought about many changes and phases in his poetry. Even Eliot s attitude was reflected in his work. A quote from T. S. Eliot: The Man and His Work states, Eliot was a man with the highest standards in his poetry, his critisism, and his behavior to others. ( Spender 34). Perhaps much of this can be attributed to his birth toward the end of the Victorian Era. Eliot s background also had a major effect on his writing style. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on September 26, 1888. Though Eliot was born in America, he spent much of his life in England. Although... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eliot published many religious works including Idea of a Christian Society. The plays that Eliot wrote in this period reflected a spiritual content as well as many journeys and tasks. His works also became more political. He spoke of how corrupt and apathetic the new age had become. His new political views were probably sparked from his life as a British citizen. Analyzation of Eliot s life provides great insight on why his writing was divided into these four periods. Eliot s demeanor was also evident in his work. Many said that Eliot often had a very serious look about him. He was very sophisticated in his speech and actions, and when he was humorous, it was in a very strange way. He often would make remarks that made very little sense. Both sides of his personality showed up in his work. Most of his writing was serious in nature, but sometimes it was amusing such as his Old Possum s Book of Practical Cats. Many people know of this work because the very popular musical Cats was based on it. Both of these were filled with nonsense humor. Eliot s influences made a huge impact on his writing. He was completely immersed in the works from Greek and Roman literature, as well as modern and medieval Europe. Eliot also greatly love the Rubiyat of Omar Khayyam. Much of this influence was evident in the work. One of Eliot s greatest influences was Ezra Pound. Eliot met Ezra Pound in 1914, and that meeting proved to be of great significance to Eliot s writing career. Ezra ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Group Mind The Group Mind People change to the atmosphere. If you are with a friend you can watch how this attitude changes from when he is with you to when he is set in the group mind around other peers. You can also look at yourself. Humans act on their natural instincts and if you look at yourself and how you act when you are alone compared to how you act in the group mind setting, you will see that you almost dumb yourself down to a level that you think will help you fit in with your friends. If we could just open our eyes, we would see how repetitive and dumb we think inside of our group minds. Then when I was with my friends it completely changed into dirty, mindless jokes and wanting to do things that I would never want my parents to know about. I noticed that no matter who I was around I found it hard to just be myself and the fact that I have been unconsciously doing it all this time made me think of what it would be like if I was just myself or different from what everybody thinks of me. Unfortunately, I never could bring up the courage to be different, so I started to change some of the little things that I did around my friends. I began to lose the interest of my friends and they didn t invite me to as many things or call me to go hang out. Surprisingly, I was ok with it. Changing the way that I acted with my friends made me realize that they were never really my friends. They just accepted me because I wore cool clothes and talked about the stuff that was important to the group. I know now that they are all just acquaintances that I have had some fun times with. As Doris Lessing says in her essay, When we re in a group mind, we tend to think as that group does. It is the hardest thing in the world to maintain an individual dissent opinion as a member of a group. The world is filled with group minds, not only in people but in societies as well. If the majority of a society takes a stance on a subject the rest that don t actually agree in their mind will unconsciously conform to the group mind and agree. The group mind is very ... • 8. The Legacy of John F. Kennedy Essay Our Fellow American The late president John Fitzgerald Kennedy once said, Sure it s a big job; but I don t know anyone who can do it better than I can ( John F. The thirty fifth president of the United States was born May 29, 1917, in Brookline, Massachusetts. He was the youngest president ever, as well as the first and only Roman Catholic president (Bass, et al.). His presidency was shortened by an assassin on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. In short, every American ought to have the right to be treated as he would wish to be treated, as one would wish his children to be treated. Despite Kennedy s assassination shortly after this proclamation, the Civil Rights Act passed through Congress just weeks later under President Johnson. As JFK intended, the Civil Rights Act afforded equal rights to whites and blacks alike (Kozak). Kennedy is remembered for following through on promises made during his campaign. One of Kennedy s memorable feats in domestic affairs was the advancement of our space program (Armstrong, Lovell, Cernan). In a 1961 address to Congress he said, First, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth. SWAT, which first stood for Special Weapons Attack Team, and then was later changed to Special Weapons and Tactics, was founded by Daryl Gates who was a police commander for the Los Angeles Police Department. SWAT teams are different from regular law enforcement in the fact that they are far more advanced and handle far more advanced and dangerous situations. They use more powerful weapons and more experienced policing tactics. They could be considered the elite members of law enforcement. SWAT teams do not just deal with the normal criminal. They handle the extreme criminals who often defy law enforcement. SWAT teams were founded in an effort the lower the massively high crime rate that was dominating the late 1990s. In response to sudden changes occurring and traditional values being challenged, various reform movements during 1825 1850 began to focus on democratic ideals. The rise of religious revivals, movements for equal rights and protecting liberties of different social groups, want to advance society technologically, and desire to bring order and control helped reform the society to live up to the nation s founding ideals. Society was now exposed to knowledge such as: philosophy, current events, and political information which brought up the level of education of the common man. Ernest Hemingway s novel, A Farewell to Arms, follows the life of the Italian Speaking, American Frederic Henry as he joins the war on behalf of the Italians, is injured by a bombshell, and flees after his recovery. In his most popular novel, A Farewell to Arms , Hemingway utilizes the motif of whorehouses, sporadic syntax during Henry s rampant drunkenness, and understatement when Henry encounters death to illustrate how war morally decays the ordinary man. I wasn t blaspheming, I was asking for information. You are drunk, baby. Who made me drunk? I made you drunk because I love you and because America is in the war. (Hemingway 71) Through this ambiguous sentence structure, it is difficult to tell who says, comments, or argues with who. By utilizing this perplexing syntax Hemingway shows how being drunk affects Henry s state of mind. Henry is unable to tell right from wrong, or if the comment made is actually blasphemy or not. Henry s mindstate is altered, as evident by Hemingway s use of muddled syntax, as a result of the alcohol; in addition, Henry only got drunk because he was given alcohol after his injuries in the war. Thus, the war morally decayed Henry s mind through alcohol to the point of not being able to discern right from wrong. • 15. What Every American Should Know By Eric Liu Interpretative essay What every American should know by Eric Liu thoroughly examines the issue of cultural literacy and its place in modern America. It takes on a convincing argument against E.D. Hirsch s book on the same which included some 5000 things that he thought define cultural literacy and every American should know. Liu argues that America has changed over time, becoming more multicultural, and to capture the cultural literacy of the country, no one person should sit down and come up with what they think everyone else should know. Instead he suggests that in order to capture the view of the nation, every American should be involved in the making of the list. The most engaging part of this article is Liu s idea that this new list that is crowd sourced should always change according to the times. It should not be cast in stone because things in this day and age change really fast; what is a hit this month will be old news in the next one. This is what cultural literacy really is; keeping up with what is going on around you and being open to learn new things as they emerge. This can also be said of education; in order to stay educated in any field, you have to be in the know of in terms of new developments. The conversation and debates on cultural literacy should continue in every place in America since it helps us to understand and be tolerant of other cultures around us (Gay 2010). • 23. The Gap Between Spoken Speakers And Non Fluent Speakers Of... Carol Woodard, Guy Haskins, Grace Schaefer, and Linda Smolen address the issue of bridging the gap between fluent speakers and non fluent speakers of English in classrooms in the United States. The article explains how an urban school had tested the children in kindergarten and the results of the test showed a nearly two year lag in oral language development (2004, p.92). The large gap in oral language development of the less fluent speakers can be detrimental to their education. The school has to try to bridge the gap quickly in the early years of the student s education; in order to catch the students up to the developmentally appropriate level of oral language before it s too late. If the school is unable to bridge the gap the less fluent speakers may be delayed in their reading and writing skills. The school implemented a talk table to bridge the gap in oral language development (Woodard, Haskins, Schaefer, Smolen, 2004, p. 92). The research method the school decided to use was observations of the students progress, surveys, and pretest and posttest. The teacher in charge of each classroom was responsible for carefully observing and recording the students progress throughout the program. The teachers utilized their state s curriculum standards as a grading scale of how well the students were doing and to monitor the progress they were making. • 28. The Five Eighty Eight By John Cheever What personality traits do we display with our actions? Our personalities are shaped by our life experiences and the people around us. They re shaped by our upbringing, the way our parents treated us and the many thing we learned from them. They re shaped by our past experiences whether a being on the receiving end of a kind deed by another person, or the receiving end of a gross injustice. These experiences shape our personalities and in turn shape how we view the world and treat those around us. John Cheever s The Five Forty Eight is the story about a woman trying to put herself back together after being broken, albeit in a slightly questionable way. Miss Dent is a woman who previously spent 8 months in a hospital, and is still clearly a bit unhinged. She is a fragile woman who becomes attached to Mr. Blake after he hires her as his secretary. Mr. Blake sees how vulnerable she is and takes advantage of her, afterwards having an employee fire her and keep her from seeing him. Months later Miss Dent stalks Mr. Blake, cornering him on the Five Forty Eight. Mr. Blake is terrified, but Miss Dent claims she will not kill him as long as he listens to her. After Miss Dent has made him feel the way he made her, she leaves him on the platform; weeping as he made her, but unharmed. Many aspects of Mr. Blake s personality are displayed throughout the story as we observe his thoughts and the way he treats others. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also (John 15:20, New International Version). Christian leaders need core attributes of God s styles and approaches, support and linkage from scriptures, and knowledge of his leadership models of truth for effective leadership. However, these perspectives will gave me a better appreciation and insight of who God is and who I can be with his guidance. Core Attributes There are many people in scripture that God has placed in leadership roles. Jesus himself, David, Moses, Paul, Peter, Abraham and many others are some of those leaders. There are core attributes discussed in the lecture that personally reflect my opinion of what an effective leader of Christ needs such as, a shared vision, model of the way, empowerment of others, challenge of the process, and encouragement of the heart. Direct Democracy Vs Representative Democracy Essay Direct Democracy vs Representative Democracy The term Democracy is derived from two Greek words, demos, meaning people, and kratos, meaning rule. These two words form the word democracy which means rule by the people. Aristotle, and other ancient Greek political philosophers, used the phrase, `the governors are to be the governed , or as we have come to know it, `rule and be ruled in turn . The two major types of democracy are Representative Democracy and Direct Democracy. Clearly the arguments for and against each form of democracy are plentiful. However, it is my belief that theoretically, Direct Democracy is the superior form of political rule. Due to problems with in the direct democratic system, its use as a practical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is not even thinkable that all citizens will agree on what good is. Rousseau recognized this and accepted a term of majority rule. Those who voted against a policy which is found to be the best for the general, must have been thinking of personal gains, rather than the gains of the entire society. The feature which distinguishes direct democracy from other forms of government is the idea of agreement and the key to agreement is discussion. It is impossible to reach an agreement without discussion, because it is not right to think that everybody will have the same opinion on all matters. But, it is very possible, that through discussion an agreement could be reached by all members. Representation, on the other hand allows a select few to make decisions in their own best interest, which is not necessarily the best interest of the society. However, direct democracy is not the perfect method to produce a union of the community. For a direct democracy to work, face to face communication between all members of the community is needed. The only way this is possible is to meet in large groups. Due to the fear of high tension, many citizens will not participate in these large group meeting. So in order for these fearful people to voice their opinions they must get together in smaller, less tensions groups, where they are not as timid to say as they wish to see happen. A direct democracy can only work in a small group, so as a form of government for an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He also realized that many people could not access dental care. Thus, these revelations and his long term interest to make a difference in the world convinced him that dentistry was the best career for him. Also, Anthony learned that the work of a dentist was both an art and science. By others this crew is called the Edina Rugby Club; however, I think of each and every one one of these young men as brothers. Without the sport of rugby, I would not have had the great fortune of meeting so many teammates of different distinctive personalities, backgrounds and ethnicity. There are kids from the high schoolband to the math club to the varsity football team who make up this crew. Given the responsibility to lead these young men, I have grown as a teammate and also as a human being. I have developed the ability to respect everyone, regardless of who they are, where they are from, and what they believe in. I learn from these young men and let them teach me different things about each of their cultures that without rugby I might never have learned. When I consider each teammate, despite different ethnicities and backgrounds, I see that they are no different than me. I have learned to respect people not for where they come from or what they believe in, but for who they are and how they conduct themselves as a young man. With that being said, I still have the utmost respect for each individual s personal beliefs and history. However, as a leader I feel that if we can get by the stereotypical norms of categorizing people we will find ourselves not only having greater success as leaders but as a society as a whole. Ultimately, those who lead are responsible for teaching the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Almost everyone that could be asked could pick a side on these topics and their even smaller debated parts: Jedi versus Sith, Captain Kirk versus Captain Piccard, etc. Superhero movies are almost always a hit every year for the summer box office. Except superheroes were not always everyone s favorite, nor socially accepted in America. This was originally subject matter that stayed within the confines of a certain social class, the nerds and geeks. Nerd culture rose within mainstream culture and media through a staunch refusal to be put to the side and belittled when it did hit big. It has stayed largely and long enough so that most people will tell you that superheroes and space pilots and all culture is nerd culture now. (Rosenberg, Alyssa) But something that stung even worse than a towel snap was often getting labeled a nerd or a geek. Ryan Britt opens up his series of essays Luke Skywalker Can t Read and Other Geeky Truths talking about being in middle school in 1994 in the boys locker room. Being called queer and loser were common but the label of nerd or geek was something even worse. The concept is brought up and examined in Malcolm Gladwell s book The Power of Context: The Rise and Fall of New York City Crime. The idea is shown in real examples in both Leslie Bell s book Hard to Get: Twenty Something Women and the Paradox of Sexual Freedom and Jean Twenge An Army of One: Me. The concept that one is affected by his or her environmentor context is a radical idea due to it going against the traditional concept that an individual is the product of their upbringing and past experiences. This statistic demonstrates how an individual a product of their environment since the Generation Me college men had a much higher self esteem then the men in 1968 due to the Generation Me men being in an environment that had such a high(find better word) focus on self esteem. The individual being a product of environment and context is further demonstrated by this quote from Twenge During the 1970s when the nation s children shifted from the late Baby Boom to the early years of GenX kids self esteem declined, probably because of societal instability. Rampant divorce, a wobble economy, soaring crime rates, and swinging singles culture made the 1970s a difficult time to be a kid. (Twenge 493). The children of the 70s were a product of the context of the time which was unstable and un nurturing for children and it caused their self esteems to be lower than previous generations and future generations. Generation Me has a very high self esteem and can be borderline narcissistic according to Twenge due to the constant reminder of the self being most important. This idea of being in an environment where there is a constant reminder of something causing that thing to effect the individual is shown in Malcolm Gladwell s work, instead of being self esteem it is a new ... Machiavelli s Film Mr. Smith Goes To Washington NiccolГІ Machiavelli was notorious for his actions and writings as a politician and philosopher, among many other political and humanitarian titles. He lived in a time period during which Italy was rife with political conflict, with city states battling each other for power. Machiavelli formated specific opinions based on his experiences and what he witnessed of others whilst being in and out of the throes of Italian government. He ended up writing one of his most famous works, The Prince, in an attempt to return back to power. Within this work, he analyzes the complexities of governance in a sort of how to guide style meant for a would be ruler. The significance of his analysis comes from his unsentimental and realistic view of human nature... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The politics of our government today have become increasingly corrupted, which plays to Machiavelli s disbelief in a more benevolent human nature. In the film Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, a young senator truly possesses the honesty and virtuosity that most politicians exude and gets completely and utterly chewed up and spit out by the governmental system. When trying to put a bill into motion, his political comrades fail to support him and betray him in order to maintain their self interests. Both in films like these and in real life, virtue tends to become a thing of presentation in order to gain public approval and loyalty. A highly relevant instance of this is our current presidential election. Both of our candidates have their evident faults, but they have made appeals to the ethos and pathos of American citizens and tried to come off as virtuous in their own ways. Social media completely promotes these tactics, and the government s politics and their connection to appearance over virtue aligns with Machiavelli s principles. It is evident that the advice he provided to future rulers in The Prince has evolved and ingrained itself within the very core of America s political ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Angela had never seen such rich culture in Harlem in contrast to what she had seen and/or experienced in Philadelphia. She saw a different culture of black people in Harlem that didn t shame her as a black woman. This theory does help prove that Tomlinson does have good point when she said that Fauset strategically placed her main character in a socially heterogeneous background which allows Angela to see race through a new lens. Some critics have said that Fauset could have done a better job utilizing the beauty and essence of the Harlem Renaissance Era to have which disagrees with Tomlinson s theory about Fauset s underline moral of the story.
