Literary Analysis Of A Farewell To Arms
Haunting yet passionate, A Farewell to Arms allows readers to perceive the story from a soldier s point
of view. Hemingway depicts the harsh war with sensory but blunt details. His expression of words has
an emotional appeal on the reader, allowing his or her to put themselves in the shoes of any character.
For example, on page 73 Hemingway writes, There was sunlight coming through the shutters. I saw
the big armoire, the bare walls, and two chairs. My legs in dirty bandages, stuck straight out of the
bed. Hemingway fully describes what is seen and this permits his audience to have a full picture in
their mind.
Hemingway includes important quotes throughout the novel. On page 26, Miss Barkley starts, You did
say you loved me, didn t you? and Henry replies, Yes, I lied, I love you. I had not said it before. Later,
she brings up the rotten game they play as their affection isn t completely real. The men at the mess
begin to talk about protesting war on page 61, You are a foreigner. You are a patriot. And the ones who
would not make war? Can they stop it? I don t know. They speak of this earlier in the book (page 43)
as well but they can never fully understand how war starts or ends. On page 99, Henry and Barkley
speak of their love, I only wanted it for you. There isn t a me. I m you. Don t make up a separate me.
Another quote on page 200, Henry explains that he is over his obligation of being a part of the army
by saying, Anger was washed away in

The Reconstruction Era During The Civil War
The Reconstruction Era beginning in 1865 marked the period where white men and recently freed
African Americans quarreled over the concept of equality on the basis of race as well as where
freedom extended to. After the Civil War, there was a power struggle between the Republican and
Democratic parties as they had extremely distinct ideas on whether African Americans should be free
and hold citizen rights. African Americans were able to achieve citizenship as well as have equality
through the 14th amendment, however the struggle did not finish here, tensions between races
remained throughout the decades and the actual use of the amendment was not widespread. During
this time, two influential men were able to experience each side of this political spectrum. Robert
Smalls was a former slave who was able to gain positions in congress and advocated for political
equality throughout the southern states. Wade Hampton, was a highly educated southern planter, war
leader and senator who never accepted racial equality, always seeking to end all attempts of reform
alongside the Democratic Party. The Reconstruction proposed by congress was meant to abolish
slavery and enforce fair labor laws. As this sounds ideal, both Smalls and Hampton were bitterly
disappointed with it and would agree that Reconstruction was a failure despite their contrasting
political views. In a speech in 1876 Robert Smalls advocates against the removal of federal troops
located in the South to enforce the new

What Occurred During The Renaissance
Giancarlo Velasquez
The Renaissance
The renaissance was a period of major advancements. From art to technology and from literature to
architecture. Artists, inventors, playwrights, architects all played huge rolls during the renaissance.
The reason why the renaissance happened was because towards the end of the Black Plague many
people were dying so they wanted to change their lifestyle. People wanted to change the way they do
things. There wasn t just one Black Plague there were a bundle of them. Since they were tired of many
people dying they chose to change how they do things. Art had a major impact during the renaissance.
The most famous artists that made a huge impact in art were Michelangelo, Rapheal, Donatello,
Leonardo, and Masaccio. You may remember the first four artist named from the hit tv show/movie
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (tmnt). But your probably thinking who the heck is Masaccio. Well he
is the guy that Michelangelo, Rapheal, Donatello, Leonardo all learned from. The funny thing is that
Masaccios nickname is the splinter which is also from the tv show. But never mind the whole tv show
and what not. Let s focus on how did Michelangelo, Rapheal, Donatello, Leonardo change art or
advanced art. Michelangelo was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now technology probably had one the biggest or greatest role during the renaissance. There were
many and I mean many inventions during that helped change people s daily lives. Some inventions
that were made during the renaissance is the printing press, mechanical clock, small piano, lenses for
near sighted people, telescope, blood transfusion. The reason why technology had a huge role is
because it changed people s lives for example the mechanical clock with out it people would be late
for school or work, or printing press without it the bible would ve never been created. So see how
technology had a major role during the

User Fees
State and local governments over the past several decades have seen a dramatic decrease in state and
local government revenue. This is partly due to the reduction of the amount of revenue states and local
governments can obtain from property taxes due constraints and the reduction in federal and state aid
at the local level. As a result, state and local governments have turned to the idea of charging user fees.
User fees are a fees charged for the use of a products or services. Unlike a tax, which is imposed on
the general population of a state or local municipality, a user fee is only charged to an individual when
that individual uses that product or service. An example of a user fee would a toll charge. Not all
citizens must pay a toll charge. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People are willing to except an increase in user fees because there is nothing forcing a person to pay
any particular user fee. Increasing taxes is hard because the general population must pay a tax increase
whether they disagree with the increase or not. If an individual does not agree with the increase in a
particular fee then they simple can schoose to not use a particular service or product. Additionally,
user fees also allow for local government to diversify revenue sources. Meaning that user fees can be
generated from different sources such as golf course fees, swimming pool fees and fees for entrances
to national parks. The fees charged tend to have prices that reflect the true cost of production. This
means that individuals pay fees that tend to reflect the actual cost of operating a product or service.
People begin to see a direct link between payment and benefit. At the same time individuals see the
benefit of user fees related to the benefits provided, local governments are able to track which services
local communities want. This reduces the amount of money local governments spend on products and
services there community does not

The Letter From Birmingham Jail
The 1960 s was a sad time when segregation existed. Although the colored people were technically
free, were they really free? This time in history was filled with colored people being disgraced,
threatened, held in captivity, and vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will and drown your
sisters and brothers at whim; when you have seen hate filled policemen curse, kick and even kill your
black brothers and sister (King). Children ripped apart from their families, not being able to socialize
with certain people, or even go to the local amusement park. It was a hard time to be a colored person,
and there was one hope. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed that one day blacks and whites could one
day come together peacefully. King tried to do what he believed was right with everything in his will
to finally join forces and not be talked down on by whites. In the Letter from Birmingham Jail he
includes several events that affect not only him but thousands of others emotionally, he uses creative
examples to get his points across, and lastly King includes multiple past and present historical facts.
King uses a vast amount of emotion into his letter to the clergymen. He believes it will show people
how much the colored people go through and hurt physically and emotionally. Colored people are
humiliated everywhere they go, by Caucasian people or even the local grocery stores that have racial
signs posted out front. There came the opportunity to talk with leaders of

How Background and Upbringing Effect a Child, Especially...
In the first few pages of Wild, it describes the present being of strayed but is quickly followed by
flashbacks to her past. These flashbacks are a reminder of how the story has reached the point where it
opened, on the Pacific Coast Trail (PCT). This book is more than a memoir recounting just her hike up
the western coast; it is a story of her life s journey. It explains how who she presently is directly
determined by who she used to be. Each step on the trail is another step forward in her growth. Her
challenges in her youth created background to give her strength and independence on the PCT. Her

Instead they explain how he blamed his father s leaving as the reason for him never being a good
person with a good set of ethics and morals. To extent it is fair to say that the morals of one father was
different than the others but as Cheryl Strayed puts it in Wild, The father s job is to teach his children
how to be warriors, to give them the confidence to get on the horse to ride into battle when it s
necessary to do so. If you don t get that from your father, you have to teach yourself. (Part 4) Yes,
there is some responsibility for a father to act appropriately, but it is not a justifiable excuse for a child
without a father to say they cannot do the same things as a child with an engaged father. Strayed
proved that in her own journey because in taking the Hike on the PCT she was recognizing she could
no longer excuse her lapses in character or her lack of paternal care. Strayed wasn t doing drugs
because of her father never being there, she was doing drugs because she felt that was what people
without father who cared did. However If Strayed wanted to change she didn t need a father. By
stopping and changing the course of her life Strayed proves the defeated Wes wrong and confirms the
claim that it was not the actions of another during her up bringing that affected her being a good
person, but her reaction to the actions of another in her youth that impacted how she thought and went

Markan Priority Of The Gospel Of Mark
Markan Priority is a term used to claim that Matthew and Luke borrowed stories from Mark, because
scholars suggest Mark was written first. It is presumed that the Gospel of Mark was written first
because of how detailed each story is. The Gospels of Mark, Matthew, and Luke share stories of such
high similarity that the wording and sequence is repeated. When comparing Mark s Gospel to others,
Matthew and Luke seem to have more of a summary of events that have already been told.
One account that is in Mark and no other gospel is the arrest of Jesus in Mark 14:51. Mark speaks of a
young man who followed Jesus that says when Jesus is arrested he flings his linen cloth and fled
naked. This account is after the disciples have already fled.

Fossil Fuels Are Non Renewable
Fossil fuels were formed 300 millions of years ago before the time of dinosaurs (Energy Quest, 2012).
Prehistoric plants and animals formed the fossil fuels millions of years ago (U.S. Department of
Energy, 2013). There are three main fossil fuels that we use oil, coal, and natural gas (Energy Quest,
2012). Fossil fuels are non renewable because they take many millions of years to make (Energy
Quest, 2012). Also, once the fossil fuels are made, they can never be made again. That is why many
people try to save energy by conserving energy (Energy Quest).
The first type of fossil fuels is oil. Oil is found between folds of rocks and in areas that are porous and
contain oils within the rock itself (Energy Quest 2012). Also companies ... Show more content on

Department of Energy). Coal is hidden beneath the earth surface; it was easiest to find was where it
appeared as one of many layers of material along a side of a hill (U.S. Department of Energy). Today
coal mining sites can be around 500 feet underground (U.S. Department of Energy, 2012). Today use
coal to generate electricity that s are burned in power plants (U.S. Department of Energy, 2012). There
are four types of coal that we mine today: anthracite, bituminous, subbitminous, and lignite (Energy
Quest, 2012).
Natural gas is the third type of fossil fuels we use everyday. Natural gas was found BCE (Before the
Common Ear) (Energy Quest, 2012). This fossil fuel is lighter than air and is made up of a gas call
methane (Energy Quest, 2012). Methane is a simple compound that contains many carbon atoms and
surrounded by four hydrogen atoms (U.S. Department of Energy). Natural gas is found near petroleum
underground and can be pumped from underground traveling in pipelines to where the gas can be
stored (Energy Quest, 2012). Natural gas is used for cooking, heating and fueling other appliances
(U.S. Department of Energy, 2012). This type of fossil fuel does not have an odor but companies add a
chemical that smells like rotten eggs (U.S. Department of Energy). Natural gas can be found in three
formations: shale formations, sandstone beds, and coal seams (U.S. Department of Energy s, 2012).

Effects Of Foreign Direct Investment On Agricultural...
ABSTRACT
This research investigates and empirically examines the effects of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on
agricultural output and economic growth in Kenya. The methodology involves estimating an
economic growth model using panel data of the period from 1990 to 2013. By applying the OLS
method, the results indicate that FDIhas a negative effect on the economy overall, while combining
with other factors such as labour, GCF and exports. However, on its own, FDI s prove to have a
positive but insignificant effect on GDP.
CHAPTER ONE
Introduction Statement
Claims that the Foreign Direct Investment in Agriculture in Kenya have brought about many benefits
as opposed to the vices are wrong. In his book, Multinational Corporations in Political Economy of
Kenya, Langdon investigates multinational Corporations performances in Kenya in the mid 1970 s
and concluded that their impact was overwhelmingly negative to the economy of Kenya. He argued
that the MNC s in Kenya after independence to date became powerful instruments for profit making, a
great deal of which profit was repatriated. They produced fewer spread effects in form of employment
or linkage than local entrepreneurs would spur.
1.0 Introduction
Agriculture is the beating hub of the Kenyan economy. The agriculture sector is the single largest
sector of the economy accounting for about one quarter of GDP. About 18 per cent of growth in GDP
in 2012 was from the sector, up from 7.5 per cent recorded in 2011. The sector

Analysis Of The Movie Empire Falls By Richard Russo
Empire Falls, written by Richard Russo, encompasses several concepts of the American identity and
what it means to be an American. Russo focuses on the small town life in New England, illustrating a
compelling story while narrating the lives of several different characters. While these characters seem
to be different at the surface, they actually share several similarities. The characters of Empire Falls
share the same outlook of life. Despite the American freedom they have, they will typically follow the
path of life that they were born into and never question why. Overall, Empire Falls is a town of
acceptance, accepting ones place in society as it is. The citizens of Empire Falls do not question their
path of life and simply accept the basic truth of their lives. This speaks volumes for our country. Are
we a country that will simply accept our set path of life? Or rather fight for what we believe in, despite
the negative connotations it may bring. Through extensive analysis of the protagonist Miles Roby and
other important characters in the novel, we will begin to what it means to be an American through a
different perspective.
Miles Roby works at the restaurant, Empire Grill, spending his days flipping burgers and counting
change. He is the epitome of the Cognitive Dissonance Theory. Cognitive Dissonance is used to
describe people who are having a conflict between their personal beliefs and own reality. For example,
Miles is in a dead end job in a dying town. He knows

It s actually a very simple quantitative stock ranking scheme. It uses return on capital and earnings
yield as inputs. Return on capital is the metric that shows whether a business is a good one or not.
Earnings yield is the metric that shows whether a company is cheap or not. Greenblatt suggests using
these measures to identify good but cheap businesses, and buy them. That s the secret behind the
magic formula . In The Little Book That Beats The Market, Greenblatt calculated hypothetical returns
for the 1988 2004 period. The magic formula returned an average 30.8% per year, while the market
return was 12.3% and the S P 500 returned an average 12.4%. So this formula beats the market by
18% per year.
The two things he looks at are earnings yield, which is how cheap the company is. A simple earnings
yield would be the inverse of the P/E ratio or earnings to price. So, in other words, if something
earned $2 and it cost you $10 a share, you d have a 20% earnings yield.
It uses a more sophisticated metric than just earnings, than just price. But the concept is the same. It
uses EBIT earnings before interest and taxes and compares that to enterprise value, which is the
market value of a company s stock plus the long term debt that a company has. That adjusts for
companies that have

Sectionalism In The 19th Century
Henry Clay once wrote: I know of no South, no North, no East, no West to which I owe my allegiance.
The Union is my country. (Pearson) He was referring to sense of Nationalism, a feeling that people
have of being loyal to and proud of their country. Nationalism is desire to consider the greater good of
the country. When specific geographic areas put their own needs and beliefs over the entire country,
sectionalism is born. Sectionalism is an identification with a geographic section and the cultural,
social, economic, and political interests of that section. (Sectionalism Facts) Sectionalism is a loyalty
to a section, rather than the country as a whole. Sectionalism can be traced back to the Manifest
Destiny which is an opinion that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Southerners relied on slaves to produce the cotton and considered those slaves as property, but
Northerners felt that slavery was in violation of the Constitutional right to liberty, the pursuit of
happiness, and equal rights. As the country expanded west and more states were added, there were
more issues with sectionalism. When Missouri requested statehood, they wanted to be admitted as a
slave state. If they had been allowed to join, the free states would have been outnumbered. Maine also
wanted to become a free state. To keep the balance of the nation, Henry Clay suggested the Missouri
Compromise that both states be admitted at the same time to keep the balance. (Cornell, p. 214) This
action continued to keep the country divided based upon the regional attitudes of slavery, however, it
did relieve the tension of what would happen if there wasn t a balance anymore. The Compromise of
1850 included the Fugitive Slave Law which also was an act of sectionalism. (Cornell, p. 347) Under
this law, runaway slaves could not be free if they escaped to the North, but rather they must be
returned to their owners. This law created more tension between the North and South because a
Northerner could be held accountable for harboring a fugitive if they helped a slave

The Laocoon Group
The Laocoon Group from page 96 in our text (Fig. 3.30). This statue depicts a scene from Virgil s
Aeneid. The scene takes place shortly after attempting to warn the Trojan s not to bring the horse into
the city, Laocoon goes to the altar of Poseidon with his sons to make a sacrifice when all three are
attacked and killed by two sea serpents sent by the gods. This was because of the warning and it is
even mentioned that is specifically for throwing his spear at the horse and piercing it.
One reason I chose this piece is because of the intricacy of this beautiful work. The expressions on the
faces of not only on Laocoon and his sons but also the serpents truly bring to life the words of Virgil
in the Aeneid. The anguish on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In particular the Pyramid of Chefren which is protected by the Sphinx, a mythical creature with the
body of a lion and the head of a human. The book mentions, The aloof tranquility of the human face,
perhaps a portrait of the pharaoh (Page 14, Culture and Values). This is another example of how the art
in Egypt was more to glorify the rulers than a tribute to the gods. Even the purpose of the pyramids
shows that they thought they would go to another existence and rule there as well, taking great
amounts of their material possessions from this world with them.
There is a similar theme in some of the Chinese art we have seen in our text and that I have found on
the internet. For example, The Great Wall of China shows the power of the emperor and his ability to
use that power. This was done to some extent by the Greeks (such as the Parthenon) but there was
always a theme of the gods reflecting their protection. In Chinese architecture we see animals such as
lions and mythical creatures such as dragons protecting the buildings which are a contrast of the gods
protecting the buildings of Greece.
The statues discovered near the tomb of Shih Huang ti showing that the belief of life after death and
protection of the dead is very important as with the Egyptians. These examples of Chinese are

Aboriginals Are The Indigenous People Of Australia
Aboriginals are the indigenous people of Australia. Australia was invaded by the British in 1788 and
forced the Aboriginals off their land and into training camps and reserves (Murray, 2001). The
Aboriginal population greatly declined due to diseases introduced by the British and the lack of
nutrition; the invasion also disconnected nations from one another (Murry, 2001). There are over five
hundred nations in Australia, and many of them are still hunter gathers living in remote areas of
Australia (Altman, 2007). All of the nations articulate through different languages (Riley, 2014).

Aboriginals believe that people and the environment are split into two halves: one half mirrors the
other which represents land, air, water, and geographical features (Riley, 2014). They also believe that
to understand the universe, the two mirror images must come together. In traditional nations and
languages, they have their own guidelines for moiety (Riley, 2014). Children will either inherit the
mother s or the father s moiety and can only marry someone with a different moiety (Riley, 2014).
People who have the same moiety are considered siblings and support one another (Riley, 2014).
When support is provided by someone, it is to be paid back by either the person receiving the support
or by someone in the family (Riley, 2014). Aboriginals don t have cousins comparable to modern
cultures; they have brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers (Riley, 2014).
Totems
Totems comprise the second level of the kinship system; they create a balance among the nations
(Riley, 2014). Every person receives their own totem which becomes their responsibility, and each
person has four totems that represent their nation, clan, family and individuality (Riley, 2014). Totems
link a person to the universe and symbolize their strengths and weaknesses (Riley, 2014). The totems
from the nation, clan, and family are predetermined, but the individual totem is given by an elder in
the community; it can be received at a young age or later in life when their identity is determined

Immaculee Ilibagiz Influence On Forgiveness
Immaculeé Ilibagiza was born in Rwanda in 1972. She had a mother, father and two older brothers.
When Immaculeé was 22 years old she experienced the loss of her whole family within the Rwanda
holocaust. When their nation started war, Immaculeé was hidden within a pastor s small bathroom
with a group of seven other women for three months. Although her experience was long and horrific
she made it worthwhile by learning to forgive even the unforgivable through the power of forgiveness
and faith. After she had finally been able to escape the genocide, she became an immigrant of the
United States and started writing books of her experiences and how she was able to keep her sanity.
She devoted her life to helping others forgive and heal, especially those who have been victims of

of the Center for Development of Disadvantaged People (CDDP) one of a few recognized non profit
organizations in India. The case is an example how technological innovation and human capital can be
used to improve the life for the poor.
This rat trap entrepreneurship was a social entrepreneurship because the inventor used the resources to
cater to the needs of poor people. Prior to the innovation of the new trap, Irula villagers ... Show more

Lastly, Sethu seemed to be the first one who addressed the problem in how Irula people catch rats, so
he had the first mover advantage. In addition, it was not likely that other social entrepreneurs would
come and compete with Sethu in the near future. Hence, the Irulas did not have other choices but use
Sethu s new traps if they wanted to change the way to catch rats.
3. What characteristics of the entrepreneur enabled their success?
Sethu had many characteristics of an ideal social entrepreneur. Among those characteristics, the thing
distinguishing him from others may be his concern for the community. Being inspired by Mahatma
Gandhi the Father of the Nation, Sethu always thought of ways to bring a better life for the poor in
India. This is probably the reason why he realized the problem of the old way of catching rats of the
Irulas and did not stop thinking of a solution.
In addition, Sethu obtained an appropriate education and experience in doing social entrepreneurship.
Sethu studied in Gandhi s school in India, where he was instructed to use Gandhi s method to improve
lives for the poor, solve human conflicts and introduce new ideas. After graduation, he worked for an
NGO to accumulate experience before establishing his own NGO in 1998. His education and
experience were the foundation for his innovativeness, which contributed to the invention of the rat
trap.
Finally, the most vital factor leading

Daisy Miller Research Paper
In the novel Daisy Miller, writer Henry James shows the different cultures between American and
European. Henry James more like the American culture, he had confidence in American culture and
believed that America was a country of democracy and freedom. For his novels he always set against a
larger international background, usually between America and Europe by showing the two different
culture with two different groups of people representing two different value systems. The pattern of
his novels is use young American man or her destiny to show the conflict between two cultures. The
immature boy or girl would be cruelly wronged, betrayed and beguiled at the hand, those who pretend
to stand for the highest possible socialization. James usually uses marriage and love as a focal point ...

In this novel from those characteristics we can find how Henry James set this up. Europeans were
more concerned with are, more cultured and more aware of social situations. Americans were innocent
and have more moral issues. When James lived in Europe and he knew the European culture that the
rules you live by cannot be changed. So he uses Daisy Miller as represent American as freedom, but
Daisy Miller has never become the American girl in Europe. Just like Giovanelli tells Winterbourne
that Daisy was: the most beautiful young lady I ever saw, and the most amiable... and the most
innocent. In my opinion, if a person wants to successfully deal with a new culture. He must first learn
to affirm and respect different rules in that culture. Because those rules are the rich experience of
unman experience. Then, he should adjust himself in a way based on who you are and how you live,
so you can fit in the current situation. At the end you should be able to socialize in a way that fits the
old rule you usually live by and the new rule you live by

Case Study Of Blockbuster
Introduction of Blockbuster
Blockbuster is the largest movie rental retailer. With its opening in 1985, Blockbuster has pursued an
ambiguous program of growth and expansion. Currently, Blockbuster owns and operates over 9,000
stores both domestically and internationally. In addition, Blockbuster franchises about a quarter of its
stores. It is important to note that Blockbuster is undergoing a managerial struggle at the present time.
The current CEO, John Antioco, and a major shareholder, Carl Icahn, are disputing Blockbuster s
strategy. Mr. Antioco has threatened to resign if Mr. Icahn succeeds at attaining a position on the
Board of Directors1. Mr. Antioco believes that Blockbuster needs to develop new strategy to respond

It could package soundtracks with movies to increase revenue, or sell and advertise popular
soundtracks at the front of the store to increase sales. Admittedly, there are only a few soundtracks that
gain mass popularity with consumers, and perhaps a very limited inventory of soundtracks for sale
could be advantageous.
Diversification: Developing new products in new markets can be a riskier strategy given the unproven
market place. However, if innovation is a business value it may be worth the risk as long as you
understand what s at stake.
Introduce Visa cards: Blockbuster should unveil Visa cards that earn the user credit toward video
rentals and music purchases. This would be a very creative idea and it would also help them to cater
the European and Asian markets.
Other products: Further expansion and success in the international market can be achieved by
introducing new books on audiotape and soft drinks should be sold at Blockbuster.
Venturing: Venture into other music businesses through a joint venture for example Virgin Records.
SWOT Analysis
Strength:
Blockbuster is a generally perceived name in the feature rental business sector, being the first move

The Environmental Effects Of Landfills
Not many people know that their trash ends up in a landfill or what it is doing to the environment.
When trash ends up in a landfill it builds up in to a lager pile, starts to release toxic gases, and pollutes
the ground it sits on. Most of the time the trash is burned to make more room for more trash. Landfills
have a big effect on the environment. Landfills make gas composition. Is there a way to use LFG to
our benefit? How many landfills are being used for their gases in the United States? Some companies
are working on using the toxic gases to our benefit. Even animals are being affected by the trash in
landfills. What can people do to help reduce the trash in landfills? When trash ends up in a landfill it
does not decompose like compost it just sits there because there is lack of oxygen and low amounts of
moisture, so it does not break down very rapidly. Because the trash just sits there, it starts to release
gases like sulfur dioxide, methane, ammonia, hydrogen, and nitrogen oxide. All of those are very toxic
for the environment. The gases in a landfill can move thought soil and collect inside building or
homes that are nearby. These gases can cause health problems for people that breathe them in or are
nearby.
Once hydrogen sulfide and ammonia are in the air, it causes coughing, and irritation to people s eyes,
nose, and even the throat. Out of both chemicals, hydrogen sulfide has a foul smell, such as, rotten
eggs while ammonia has a stronger foul smell, such as

Impact Of Management On The Globalization Of Business
Impact of management in the globalization of business
Ruth Wills
University of the People
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to show impact of management in the globalization of business. The
following topics are addressed in this paper:
1. Definition of Multi National Corporation
2. Cultures and Norms
3. Management Style and Culture Shock
4. Management Style of a Multi National Corporation : Toyota Motors
5. Ethical and Economic challenges faced
Multinational Corporation
A Multinational corporation is a corporation that does business in two or more countries. It has its
home base in its own country, but has branches or subsidiaries in other countries. Their home base is
the company s identity. For example ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From a management view, global workforce is diversified and unchartered territory since every
country, even in the same region, is different. For example, Singapore is in the same region as
Malaysia but its labor laws and business norms are different. A modern thinking management must be
aware of the cultural differences, customs, geographic needs, governmental trade requirements and
even gender biases in some countries. An example of this would be workers in Bangladesh may
oppose a female supervisor. Managers also need to understand the customs, policies, politics and
history of the foreign country; and the religious practices of a foreign country for example in Brunei or
Malaysia the observance of Ramadan and Friday is prayer day.
Managers interested in venturing into the global market should be aware of the best way to approach
global demographics from a business to consumer perspective, taking an international product or
service and localizing it successfully. Source: Boundless. The Challenge of Globalization. (Boundless

Should Whistleblowers Be Protected
12/6/14
Should Whistleblowers Be Protected? * Introduction
The corruption rate in a community that does not support or protect reporting illegal activities is
significantly high. Employees who work in public or private organizations are the first to identify
wrongdoings in a workplace since they have up to date information. Whistleblowing can be an
essential tool to identify and report these actions in the public, private and non profit sectors.
However, by revealing wrongdoings, whistleblowers often take high personal risks. Lacking strong
legal protection might increase the change of facing dismissal, harassment and other forms of
retaliation ( Whistleblower protection , 2012).

* The False Claims Act
During the civil war, the False Claims Act (FCA) was passed to prevent the fraud committed by
companies that were selling supplies to the Union Army. The Act contained qui tam provisions which
authorized citizens to speak out against those deceiving companies. The public awareness of the FCA
has been growing since the passage of the 1986 amendments. The number of whistleblowers cases
that were filed has grown significantly to more than 6,000 cases in 2014 (Kusserow, 2014).
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has reported in 2013 that it has secured about $3.8 billion from
civil cases that involve fraud against the government. More than 70 percent of the recoveries, which
translated to $2.9 billion, were from lawsuits filed under the qui tam provision of the law. This
significant amount of recovery was the second largest annual recovery and fourth year in a row which
the DOJ has recuperated. Through this process, over $17 billion has been recovered since January
2009. This number is nearly half of the total amount of money that was recovered since the Act was
amended in 1986. Whistleblowers or the qui tam provisions which permit individuals to blow the
whistle was the main cause of the spectacular amount of recovery (Kusserow, 2014).
When the government succeed in winning the case, the whistleblower receives up to 30 percent of the

Identity In Shakespeare s Hamlet And Henry V
At first glance, the Shakespearean plays Hamlet and Henry V are not similar. This is because they
truly are not similar not in genre, since Hamlet is a tragedy and Henry V is a historical play; not in
plot, since the protagonist in Hamlet hides in the shadows of conflict while the protagonist of Henry V
charges head first into it; and certainly not in tone, where Hamlet is disastrous and Henry V is
triumphant. It is these dissimilarities of context that make Henry and Hamlet s similarities in identity
all the more interesting. Both Shakespearean protagonists are faced with extreme circumstances, and
in such extreme circumstances, they both resort to the same human response: they question. In both
plays and both characters, Shakespeare seems to explore the depth of such questions as they pertain to
human identity and as they pertain to each character s sense of control, thus seeming to pose a
question himself: what does it mean to control one s identity? To examine Shakespeare s exploration
of identity as a means of control, it is important to understand what all constitutes each character s
identity. In the case of Henry, for one, it is apparent that the actions of his past alter his perceived
identity throughout the play. Before Henry speaks his first lines in the play, the Bishop of Ely calls
Henry a true lover of the holy Church, to which the Archbishop of Canterbury replies, The courses of
[Henry s] youth promised it not (1.1.23 24). This reckless reputation follows Henry further into the
play when an ambassador from France delivers a message to Henry from the Dauphin: ...the prince
our master says that you savor too much of your youth and bids you to be advised there s naught in
France that can be with a nimble galliard won: you cannot revel into dukedoms there (1.2.250 254).
Along with this message, the Dauphin included a gift of tennis balls meant to further insult Henry.
Even later in the play, after the English won the battle at Harfleur, the noble Frenchmen continue to
underestimate Henry s ability as a leader: What a wretched and peevish fellow is this King of England,
to mope with his fat brained followers so far out of his knowledge (3.8.120 122). What these instances
show is that the

I have long been fighting for a change in the law when it comes to family policy, so that children have
the right to know and have a relationship with both parents (elphicke.com). On February 25, 2013 Mr.
Elphicke introduced a bill to Parliament which would help support Charlie s goal to put the children
first. Mr. Elphicke told Parliament that around 3 million kids in the United Kingdom are living with
separated parents and around 1 million children do not have contact with either of their parents. The
push for this bill by Charlie Elphicke was finally recognized by Parliament on March 13, 2014 when
the Children and Families Act was passed by both Houses. Another issue that Charlie Elphicke is
trying to get ahold of is the tax avoidance of big multi national businesses. I spoke up for the need to
reform our tax law fundamentally. To make sure that tax on profits from business carried out in the
UK is paid (www.elphicke.com). Mr. Elphicke says that the problem is not the British businesses, but
the companies who are world wide and do not pay the proper corporation tax that they should pay.
April 16, 2012 was the first day that the Finance Bill was debated in Parliament and this is the bill that
sets the taxes and the tax law. Charlie set forth a couple of ideas in this Bill about anti avoidance
measures. The first principle is that business tax rates should be low, simple and attractive. Britain
should be open for business, but open for business on a level playing field for national and
international companies (www.elphicke.com). After years of continuing to debate and pushing
forward the idea, under the Labour party income tax receipts went up, while the corporation tax stayed
the same. To this day, Charlie Elphicke is continuing to call out many corporations for the
continuation of tax avoidance he

Prohibition In The 20 s
During the Roaring Twenties, the flapper girl s outfit wasn t complete without her hipflask. Flapper
girls were rebellious and rejected society s norms and laws. Similarly, though Prohibition in the 20 s
outlawed alcohol in the US, it was often met with rebellious attitudes and illegal trades, allowing
many to acquire alcohol even during the height of Prohibition. The US today struggle with similar
problems as prohibition on marijuana is often ignored and many black market trades allow people to
have access to marijuana in the US. In the article Today s War on Drugs:Prohibition then and now,

The people were not afraid to break the law and acquire alcohol, so many people in the US bribed law
enforcements and completely avoided the law itself. Similarly today, although law enforcement is not
bribed, there are lots of smuggling of drugs into the US, especially through the border with Mexico.
Law enforcement struggles to keep the whole border pacified, and thus, smugglers often past the
border and provided goods. Because of the fact that the public was willing to buy alcohol even though
it was illegal, and the struggles of law enforcement to control the crowd, the Prohibition led to a
failure, and the prohibition on marijuana today is faltering because of this. Since the law enforcement
couldn t handle the smuggling problem, the society continued to do illegal acts to acquire alcohol, thus
undermining and destroying the whole point of Prohibition. Similarly, the US faces a similar problem
with marijuana smuggling. However, though the smuggle of marijuana and the increasing problem of
prohibition on marijuana is evident, the US refuses to legalize marijuana, similar to the actions taken
in the 20 s, hoping that the problem will be fixed soon. Even so, the problem of marijuana prohibition
is clear as the Prohibition in the

Omnivore s Dilemma Summary
The Omnivore s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, by Michael Pollan, is about one man s
journey through the food production system and how he arrives at the conclusion that although
hunting and gathering may be an excellent means to keep oneself healthy, it is really up to the
individual as to what they are willing to put in their body. Pollan begins section 1 ( Industrial Corn )
by analyzing how far the practice of shopping for groceries at the supermarket has taken modern
society from the natural environment the food is (presumably) gathered from. He cites the florescent
lighting, comparing it to the less harsh rays of the sun. From here, Pollan relates the story of a corn
farmer from Iowa, George Naylor, to expound upon the impact

How Did The Treaty Of Versailles Punish Germany
The Treaty of Versailles is a peace treaty, where it basically punishes Germany. It makes them
powerless to a point that they cannot be able to create another war. This treaty was way too harsh on
the Germans. It is a fact that they were not the only ones fighting in the war, and they should not be
the only one, who should be punished. Everyone must take responsibilities for their drastic decisions.
All of the major countries had a role in this war, not only Germany. The Germans were stripped down
of everything they had. It left Germans helplessly and made to live in poverty. In order to pay off the
damages that were made, they were treated like slaves. Instead of making peace with Germany, the
Treaty of Versailles was sparking another fire

Comparison Between Modern Day Music And Langston Hughes...
Comparison of modern day music to Langston Hughes and Paul Laurence Dunbar Poetry has changed
over the course of many years and numerous events in history.Music, as well, changed the sound and
lyrical meanings due to many events in history. Whether music is poetry or not can be argued, but I
believe music is an art represented through sound and lyrics. Music is a form of poetry with a little
tune to it. Music has a message to it just as poetry would. Modern day music can reflect on many
things, just as poetry sometimes refers to events going on in the world. Many years ago a very
controversial topic was the discussion of slavery, and later the inequality of colored men to whites.
Popular American poets, Paul Laurence Dunbar and Langston Hughes, are two of the very few who
would talk about these controversies. Their poetry consisted of slavery, racial relations and inequality,
opportunity, and hope. Their poetry captures the despair and faith in the colored people through all
their oppression. Modern day music genre and style of hip hop or rap is a style created by African
Americans. Present day rap artists, J Cole and Kendrick Lamar, are two rap artists who have
revolutionized music and have become idolized by many African Americans. The two are known for
discussing the reality of what it is like being a black man in today s society. The poems of Hughes and
Dunbar are very comparable to the songs of Cole and Lamar that discuss oppression, inequality, and
hope within black

A Blonde Curtain Of Hair
A blonde curtain of hair stands between me and the girl, who keeps her head down and tucked into her
knees as if ashamed to be near me. My eyes dart around the room, but all I see is black, black walls,

She looks up and my sister s face is the one that greets me. Emma, I want to say Em, what s going on?
But my lips won t move. No sound is heard throughout the room until I hear her voice Why Alice!
Why did you try to save me! Maybe you could have saved yourself! Tears roll down her face as she
stands walking to where I lay in my wooden coffin . She walks over to me and closes the case.
You failed me.
Those words echo through my mind again and again as I wake, shooting up from my cot, my breath

Health Decline and Population Growth of the Neolithic...
As discussed in class by Dr. Birch, the term Neolithic was coined to refer to new techniques of
grinding and polishing stone tools. The significance of the Neolithic, however, is related to the
creation of an entirely new economy, not just the difference in artifacts. During the Neolithic
Revolution many groups became dependent on domesticated foods, meaning at least 50 percent of
their diet consisted of domesticated foods (Kottack 2011:234). These Neolithic economies, whose
primary diet consisted of agriculture, were associated with substantial changes in daily life. Until
recently, scientists believed that these changes were for the improvement of human life. Most
anthropologists and archaeologists agreed that hunter gatherer societies were far more labor intensive,
disease filled, and generally a had lower quality of life. This has all changed with new studies and
characterizations in the fields of anthropology and archaeology. Among these studies and
characterizations of hunter gatherers are those collected in Man the Hunter which suggests that
Paleolithic populations had abundant resources and could be considered the earliest affluent society
(Armelagos et al 1991:13). These new findings have causes anthropologists to wonder if populations
during the Neolithic really did increase and if these populations were healthier than those of the
Paleolithic. Was the Neolithic Revolution a good thing for the human species? Scientists believe the
population growth witnessed

  • 2. Literary Analysis Of A Farewell To Arms Haunting yet passionate, A Farewell to Arms allows readers to perceive the story from a soldier s point of view. Hemingway depicts the harsh war with sensory but blunt details. His expression of words has an emotional appeal on the reader, allowing his or her to put themselves in the shoes of any character. For example, on page 73 Hemingway writes, There was sunlight coming through the shutters. I saw the big armoire, the bare walls, and two chairs. My legs in dirty bandages, stuck straight out of the bed. Hemingway fully describes what is seen and this permits his audience to have a full picture in their mind. Hemingway includes important quotes throughout the novel. On page 26, Miss Barkley starts, You did say you loved me, didn t you? and Henry replies, Yes, I lied, I love you. I had not said it before. Later, she brings up the rotten game they play as their affection isn t completely real. The men at the mess begin to talk about protesting war on page 61, You are a foreigner. You are a patriot. And the ones who would not make war? Can they stop it? I don t know. They speak of this earlier in the book (page 43) as well but they can never fully understand how war starts or ends. On page 99, Henry and Barkley speak of their love, I only wanted it for you. There isn t a me. I m you. Don t make up a separate me. Another quote on page 200, Henry explains that he is over his obligation of being a part of the army by saying, Anger was washed away in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Reconstruction Era During The Civil War The Reconstruction Era beginning in 1865 marked the period where white men and recently freed African Americans quarreled over the concept of equality on the basis of race as well as where freedom extended to. After the Civil War, there was a power struggle between the Republican and Democratic parties as they had extremely distinct ideas on whether African Americans should be free and hold citizen rights. African Americans were able to achieve citizenship as well as have equality through the 14th amendment, however the struggle did not finish here, tensions between races remained throughout the decades and the actual use of the amendment was not widespread. During this time, two influential men were able to experience each side of this political spectrum. Robert Smalls was a former slave who was able to gain positions in congress and advocated for political equality throughout the southern states. Wade Hampton, was a highly educated southern planter, war leader and senator who never accepted racial equality, always seeking to end all attempts of reform alongside the Democratic Party. The Reconstruction proposed by congress was meant to abolish slavery and enforce fair labor laws. As this sounds ideal, both Smalls and Hampton were bitterly disappointed with it and would agree that Reconstruction was a failure despite their contrasting political views. In a speech in 1876 Robert Smalls advocates against the removal of federal troops located in the South to enforce the new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. What Occurred During The Renaissance Giancarlo Velasquez The Renaissance The renaissance was a period of major advancements. From art to technology and from literature to architecture. Artists, inventors, playwrights, architects all played huge rolls during the renaissance. The reason why the renaissance happened was because towards the end of the Black Plague many people were dying so they wanted to change their lifestyle. People wanted to change the way they do things. There wasn t just one Black Plague there were a bundle of them. Since they were tired of many people dying they chose to change how they do things. Art had a major impact during the renaissance. The most famous artists that made a huge impact in art were Michelangelo, Rapheal, Donatello, Leonardo, and Masaccio. You may remember the first four artist named from the hit tv show/movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (tmnt). But your probably thinking who the heck is Masaccio. Well he is the guy that Michelangelo, Rapheal, Donatello, Leonardo all learned from. The funny thing is that Masaccios nickname is the splinter which is also from the tv show. But never mind the whole tv show and what not. Let s focus on how did Michelangelo, Rapheal, Donatello, Leonardo change art or advanced art. Michelangelo was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now technology probably had one the biggest or greatest role during the renaissance. The reason why technology had a huge role is because it changed people s lives for example the mechanical clock with out it people would be late for school or work, or printing press without it the bible would ve never been created. • 5. User Fees State and local governments over the past several decades have seen a dramatic decrease in state and local government revenue. This is partly due to the reduction of the amount of revenue states and local governments can obtain from property taxes due constraints and the reduction in federal and state aid at the local level. As a result, state and local governments have turned to the idea of charging user fees. User fees are a fees charged for the use of a products or services. Unlike a tax, which is imposed on the general population of a state or local municipality, a user fee is only charged to an individual when that individual uses that product or service. An example of a user fee would a toll charge. Not all citizens must pay a toll charge. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People are willing to except an increase in user fees because there is nothing forcing a person to pay any particular user fee. Increasing taxes is hard because the general population must pay a tax increase whether they disagree with the increase or not. If an individual does not agree with the increase in a particular fee then they simple can schoose to not use a particular service or product. Additionally, user fees also allow for local government to diversify revenue sources. Meaning that user fees can be generated from different sources such as golf course fees, swimming pool fees and fees for entrances to national parks. The fees charged tend to have prices that reflect the true cost of production. This means that individuals pay fees that tend to reflect the actual cost of operating a product or service. People begin to see a direct link between payment and benefit. At the same time individuals see the benefit of user fees related to the benefits provided, local governments are able to track which services local communities want. This reduces the amount of money local governments spend on products and services there community does not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Letter From Birmingham Jail The 1960 s was a sad time when segregation existed. Although the colored people were technically free, were they really free? This time in history was filled with colored people being disgraced, threatened, held in captivity, and vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will and drown your sisters and brothers at whim; when you have seen hate filled policemen curse, kick and even kill your black brothers and sister (King). Children ripped apart from their families, not being able to socialize with certain people, or even go to the local amusement park. It was a hard time to be a colored person, and there was one hope. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed that one day blacks and whites could one day come together peacefully. King tried to do what he believed was right with everything in his will to finally join forces and not be talked down on by whites. In the Letter from Birmingham Jail he includes several events that affect not only him but thousands of others emotionally, he uses creative examples to get his points across, and lastly King includes multiple past and present historical facts. King uses a vast amount of emotion into his letter to the clergymen. He believes it will show people how much the colored people go through and hurt physically and emotionally. Colored people are humiliated everywhere they go, by Caucasian people or even the local grocery stores that have racial signs posted out front. There came the opportunity to talk with leaders of ... These flashbacks are a reminder of how the story has reached the point where it opened, on the Pacific Coast Trail (PCT). This book is more than a memoir recounting just her hike up the western coast; it is a story of her life s journey. It explains how who she presently is directly determined by who she used to be. Each step on the trail is another step forward in her growth. Her challenges in her youth created background to give her strength and independence on the PCT. Her beat the odds mentality instilled in her during her upbringing gave her the will to successfully finish the hike and more importantly find the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead they explain how he blamed his father s leaving as the reason for him never being a good person with a good set of ethics and morals. To extent it is fair to say that the morals of one father was different than the others but as Cheryl Strayed puts it in Wild, The father s job is to teach his children how to be warriors, to give them the confidence to get on the horse to ride into battle when it s necessary to do so. If you don t get that from your father, you have to teach yourself. (Part 4) Yes, there is some responsibility for a father to act appropriately, but it is not a justifiable excuse for a child without a father to say they cannot do the same things as a child with an engaged father. Strayed proved that in her own journey because in taking the Hike on the PCT she was recognizing she could no longer excuse her lapses in character or her lack of paternal care. Strayed wasn t doing drugs because of her father never being there, she was doing drugs because she felt that was what people without father who cared did. However If Strayed wanted to change she didn t need a father. It is presumed that the Gospel of Mark was written first because of how detailed each story is. The Gospels of Mark, Matthew, and Luke share stories of such high similarity that the wording and sequence is repeated. When comparing Mark s Gospel to others, Matthew and Luke seem to have more of a summary of events that have already been told. One account that is in Mark and no other gospel is the arrest of Jesus in Mark 14:51. Mark speaks of a young man who followed Jesus that says when Jesus is arrested he flings his linen cloth and fled naked. This account is after the disciples have already fled. ... • 10. Effects Of Foreign Direct Investment On Agricultural... ABSTRACT This research investigates and empirically examines the effects of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on agricultural output and economic growth in Kenya. The methodology involves estimating an economic growth model using panel data of the period from 1990 to 2013. By applying the OLS method, the results indicate that FDIhas a negative effect on the economy overall, while combining with other factors such as labour, GCF and exports. However, on its own, FDI s prove to have a positive but insignificant effect on GDP. CHAPTER ONE Introduction Statement Claims that the Foreign Direct Investment in Agriculture in Kenya have brought about many benefits as opposed to the vices are wrong. In his book, Multinational Corporations in Political Economy of Kenya, Langdon investigates multinational Corporations performances in Kenya in the mid 1970 s and concluded that their impact was overwhelmingly negative to the economy of Kenya. He argued that the MNC s in Kenya after independence to date became powerful instruments for profit making, a great deal of which profit was repatriated. They produced fewer spread effects in form of employment or linkage than local entrepreneurs would spur. 1.0 Introduction Agriculture is the beating hub of the Kenyan economy. The agriculture sector is the single largest sector of the economy accounting for about one quarter of GDP. About 18 per cent of growth in GDP in 2012 was from the sector, up from 7.5 per cent recorded in 2011. The sector ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Analysis Of The Movie Empire Falls By Richard Russo Empire Falls, written by Richard Russo, encompasses several concepts of the American identity and what it means to be an American. Russo focuses on the small town life in New England, illustrating a compelling story while narrating the lives of several different characters. While these characters seem to be different at the surface, they actually share several similarities. The characters of Empire Falls share the same outlook of life. Despite the American freedom they have, they will typically follow the path of life that they were born into and never question why. Overall, Empire Falls is a town of acceptance, accepting ones place in society as it is. The citizens of Empire Falls do not question their path of life and simply accept the basic truth of their lives. This speaks volumes for our country. Are we a country that will simply accept our set path of life? Or rather fight for what we believe in, despite the negative connotations it may bring. Through extensive analysis of the protagonist Miles Roby and other important characters in the novel, we will begin to what it means to be an American through a different perspective. Miles Roby works at the restaurant, Empire Grill, spending his days flipping burgers and counting change. He is the epitome of the Cognitive Dissonance Theory. It s actually a very simple quantitative stock ranking scheme. It uses return on capital and earnings yield as inputs. Return on capital is the metric that shows whether a business is a good one or not. Earnings yield is the metric that shows whether a company is cheap or not. Greenblatt suggests using these measures to identify good but cheap businesses, and buy them. That s the secret behind the magic formula . In The Little Book That Beats The Market, Greenblatt calculated hypothetical returns for the 1988 2004 period. The magic formula returned an average 30.8% per year, while the market return was 12.3% and the S P 500 returned an average 12.4%. So this formula beats the market by 18% per year. The two things he looks at are earnings yield, which is how cheap the company is. A simple earnings yield would be the inverse of the P/E ratio or earnings to price. So, in other words, if something earned $2 and it cost you $10 a share, you d have a 20% earnings yield. It uses a more sophisticated metric than just earnings, than just price. But the concept is the same. It uses EBIT earnings before interest and taxes and compares that to enterprise value, which is the market value of a company s stock plus the long term debt that a company has. That adjusts for companies that have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When specific geographic areas put their own needs and beliefs over the entire country, sectionalism is born. Sectionalism is an identification with a geographic section and the cultural, social, economic, and political interests of that section. Southerners relied on slaves to produce the cotton and considered those slaves as property, but Northerners felt that slavery was in violation of the Constitutional right to liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and equal rights. As the country expanded west and more states were added, there were more issues with sectionalism. When Missouri requested statehood, they wanted to be admitted as a slave state. If they had been allowed to join, the free states would have been outnumbered. Maine also wanted to become a free state. To keep the balance of the nation, Henry Clay suggested the Missouri Compromise that both states be admitted at the same time to keep the balance. (Cornell, p. 214) This action continued to keep the country divided based upon the regional attitudes of slavery, however, it did relieve the tension of what would happen if there wasn t a balance anymore. The Compromise of 1850 included the Fugitive Slave Law which also was an act of sectionalism. (Cornell, p. 347) Under this law, runaway slaves could not be free if they escaped to the North, but rather they must be returned to their owners. Even the purpose of the pyramids shows that they thought they would go to another existence and rule there as well, taking great amounts of their material possessions from this world with them. There is a similar theme in some of the Chinese art we have seen in our text and that I have found on the internet. For example, The Great Wall of China shows the power of the emperor and his ability to use that power. This was done to some extent by the Greeks (such as the Parthenon) but there was always a theme of the gods reflecting their protection. In Chinese architecture we see animals such as lions and mythical creatures such as dragons protecting the buildings which are a contrast of the gods protecting the buildings of Greece. How many landfills are being used for their gases in the United States? Some companies are working on using the toxic gases to our benefit. Even animals are being affected by the trash in landfills. What can people do to help reduce the trash in landfills? When trash ends up in a landfill it does not decompose like compost it just sits there because there is lack of oxygen and low amounts of moisture, so it does not break down very rapidly. • 27. Identity In Shakespeare s Hamlet And Henry V At first glance, the Shakespearean plays Hamlet and Henry V are not similar. This is because they truly are not similar not in genre, since Hamlet is a tragedy and Henry V is a historical play; not in plot, since the protagonist in Hamlet hides in the shadows of conflict while the protagonist of Henry V charges head first into it; and certainly not in tone, where Hamlet is disastrous and Henry V is triumphant. It is these dissimilarities of context that make Henry and Hamlet s similarities in identity all the more interesting. Both Shakespearean protagonists are faced with extreme circumstances, and in such extreme circumstances, they both resort to the same human response: they question. In both plays and both characters, Shakespeare seems to explore the depth of such questions as they pertain to human identity and as they pertain to each character s sense of control, thus seeming to pose a question himself: what does it mean to control one s identity? To examine Shakespeare s exploration of identity as a means of control, it is important to understand what all constitutes each character s identity. In the case of Henry, for one, it is apparent that the actions of his past alter his perceived identity throughout the play. Before Henry speaks his first lines in the play, the Bishop of Ely calls Henry a true lover of the holy Church, to which the Archbishop of Canterbury replies, The courses of [Henry s] youth promised it not (1.1.23 24). This reckless reputation follows Henry further into the play when an ambassador from France delivers a message to Henry from the Dauphin: ...the prince our master says that you savor too much of your youth and bids you to be advised there s naught in France that can be with a nimble galliard won: you cannot revel into dukedoms there (1.2.250 254). Along with this message, the Dauphin included a gift of tennis balls meant to further insult Henry. Even later in the play, after the English won the battle at Harfleur, the noble Frenchmen continue to underestimate Henry s ability as a leader: What a wretched and peevish fellow is this King of England, to mope with his fat brained followers so far out of his knowledge (3.8.120 122). What these instances show is that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I have long been fighting for a change in the law when it comes to family policy, so that children have the right to know and have a relationship with both parents (elphicke.com). On February 25, 2013 Mr. Elphicke introduced a bill to Parliament which would help support Charlie s goal to put the children first. Mr. Elphicke told Parliament that around 3 million kids in the United Kingdom are living with separated parents and around 1 million children do not have contact with either of their parents. The push for this bill by Charlie Elphicke was finally recognized by Parliament on March 13, 2014 when the Children and Families Act was passed by both Houses. Another issue that Charlie Elphicke is trying to get ahold of is the tax avoidance of big multi national businesses. I spoke up for the need to reform our tax law fundamentally. To make sure that tax on profits from business carried out in the UK is paid (www.elphicke.com). Mr. Elphicke says that the problem is not the British businesses, but the companies who are world wide and do not pay the proper corporation tax that they should pay. April 16, 2012 was the first day that the Finance Bill was debated in Parliament and this is the bill that sets the taxes and the tax law. Charlie set forth a couple of ideas in this Bill about anti avoidance measures. The first principle is that business tax rates should be low, simple and attractive. Britain should be open for business, but open for business on a level playing field for national and international companies (www.elphicke.com). After years of continuing to debate and pushing forward the idea, under the Labour party income tax receipts went up, while the corporation tax stayed the same. To this day, Charlie Elphicke is continuing to call out many corporations for the continuation of tax avoidance he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Similarly, though Prohibition in the 20 s outlawed alcohol in the US, it was often met with rebellious attitudes and illegal trades, allowing many to acquire alcohol even during the height of Prohibition. The US today struggle with similar problems as prohibition on marijuana is often ignored and many black market trades allow people to have access to marijuana in the US. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The people were not afraid to break the law and acquire alcohol, so many people in the US bribed law enforcements and completely avoided the law itself. Similarly today, although law enforcement is not bribed, there are lots of smuggling of drugs into the US, especially through the border with Mexico. Law enforcement struggles to keep the whole border pacified, and thus, smugglers often past the border and provided goods. Because of the fact that the public was willing to buy alcohol even though it was illegal, and the struggles of law enforcement to control the crowd, the Prohibition led to a failure, and the prohibition on marijuana today is faltering because of this. Since the law enforcement couldn t handle the smuggling problem, the society continued to do illegal acts to acquire alcohol, thus undermining and destroying the whole point of Prohibition. Similarly, the US faces a similar problem with marijuana smuggling. However, though the smuggle of marijuana and the increasing problem of prohibition on marijuana is evident, the US refuses to legalize marijuana, similar to the actions taken in the 20 s, hoping that the problem will be fixed soon. Even so, the problem of marijuana prohibition is clear as the Prohibition in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Omnivore s Dilemma Summary The Omnivore s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, by Michael Pollan, is about one man s journey through the food production system and how he arrives at the conclusion that although hunting and gathering may be an excellent means to keep oneself healthy, it is really up to the individual as to what they are willing to put in their body. Pollan begins section 1 ( Industrial Corn ) by analyzing how far the practice of shopping for groceries at the supermarket has taken modern society from the natural environment the food is (presumably) gathered from. He cites the florescent lighting, comparing it to the less harsh rays of the sun. From here, Pollan relates the story of a corn farmer from Iowa, George Naylor, to expound upon the impact ... All of the major countries had a role in this war, not only Germany. The Germans were stripped down of everything they had. It left Germans helplessly and made to live in poverty. • 37. Comparison Between Modern Day Music And Langston Hughes... Comparison of modern day music to Langston Hughes and Paul Laurence Dunbar Poetry has changed over the course of many years and numerous events in history.Music, as well, changed the sound and lyrical meanings due to many events in history. Whether music is poetry or not can be argued, but I believe music is an art represented through sound and lyrics. Music is a form of poetry with a little tune to it. Music has a message to it just as poetry would. Modern day music can reflect on many things, just as poetry sometimes refers to events going on in the world. Many years ago a very controversial topic was the discussion of slavery, and later the inequality of colored men to whites. Popular American poets, Paul Laurence Dunbar and Langston Hughes, are two of the very few who would talk about these controversies. Their poetry consisted of slavery, racial relations and inequality, opportunity, and hope. Their poetry captures the despair and faith in the colored people through all their oppression. Modern day music genre and style of hip hop or rap is a style created by African Americans. Present day rap artists, J Cole and Kendrick Lamar, are two rap artists who have revolutionized music and have become idolized by many African Americans. The two are known for discussing the reality of what it is like being a black man in today s society. The poems of Hughes and Dunbar are very comparable to the songs of Cole and Lamar that discuss oppression, inequality, and hope within black ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My eyes dart around the room, but all I see is black, black walls, black floors, and the black dress draped over the blonde girl s pale frame. She looks up and my sister s face is the one that greets me. Emma, I want to say Em, what s going on? But my lips won t move. No sound is heard throughout the room until I hear her voice Why Alice! Why did you try to save me! Maybe you could have saved yourself! Tears roll down her face as she stands walking to where I lay in my wooden coffin . She walks over to me and closes the case. You failed me. Those words echo through my mind again and again as I wake, shooting up from my cot, my breath heavy and my entire body damp with sweat. • 39. Health Decline and Population Growth of the Neolithic... As discussed in class by Dr. Birch, the term Neolithic was coined to refer to new techniques of grinding and polishing stone tools. The significance of the Neolithic, however, is related to the creation of an entirely new economy, not just the difference in artifacts. During the Neolithic Revolution many groups became dependent on domesticated foods, meaning at least 50 percent of their diet consisted of domesticated foods (Kottack 2011:234). These Neolithic economies, whose primary diet consisted of agriculture, were associated with substantial changes in daily life. Until recently, scientists believed that these changes were for the improvement of human life. Most anthropologists and archaeologists agreed that hunter gatherer societies were far more labor intensive, disease filled, and generally a had lower quality of life. This has all changed with new studies and characterizations in the fields of anthropology and archaeology. Among these studies and characterizations of hunter gatherers are those collected in Man the Hunter which suggests that Paleolithic populations had abundant resources and could be considered the earliest affluent society (Armelagos et al 1991:13). These new findings have causes anthropologists to wonder if populations during the Neolithic really did increase and if these populations were healthier than those of the Paleolithic. Was the Neolithic Revolution a good thing for the human species? Scientists believe the population growth witnessed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
