Living In Shanty Town
Have you ever in your life been dirt poor? Have you ever had to scavenge for things to trade or to
build your house with? The people of Shanty Town have been scavenging for a little while now.
Everyone who lives in Shanty Town has to scavenge for scrap so that they can trade that scrap for
food and maybe even clothes if the right person comes through town. It is 2030 and a devastating
thirteen year world war has left many countries to collapse and left in trash and ruins. It has only
been two years since they remaining countries (China, Russia, Germany, and Japan) have signed a
truce, but secretly, each country is just rebuilding their troops to have another war for total control
of the world. They have forgotten about the used to be once... Show more content on

and sister which consisted of canned spinach and a couple of biscuits. He went out scavenging
again to look for more scrap and out there he saw a strange looking girl. Most of the town had
turned to crime to feed themselves. Seeing that this girl had a large amount of money on her, he
went to sneak up on her and steal the money, but she started to walk away so he quickened his
pace. Before he got to her, she opened a trap door and hopped inside. Confused that he had never
discovered this door out here he went up closer to it. It was camouflaged to look like a bunch of
junk and actually remembered walking past it the other day. Quietly, he opened it up and jumped
through the hole to land on a stone floor seven feet down. He crept through a somewhat open
hallway to a door. It was a wooden door with a door knob. He turned it and was thankful that it did

Paradox Of Personalization
A huge group of people is against the Internet which was born in the 1900s and has grown up too
fast. Sue Halpern in her article Mind Control and the Internet mentions to the paradox of
personalization and the self expression promoted by the Internet through Twitter and Facebook.
People on the Internet write comments for many blog posts that are disrespectful. This problem is
not just about controversial subject same as sports or politics, but for almost anything. The next
point that Sue explains is about marketing that means corporations use people to advertise their
product on Facebook s pages. When someone click on the like button on a Facebook s page for a
product, may an ad for that product appears on the pages of their friends. Twitanalyzer

Similarities Between The Weary Blues And Lepanto
Poem Analysis: The Weary Blues by Langston Hughes and Lepanto by G. K. Chesterton Poetry has
been used across different contexts, particularly in historical settings. At one point, compositions
such as poems were written in an effort to document certain dimensions that prevailed during
specific times and periods. Interestingly, compositions written in different contexts possessed
definite similarities regardless of aspects such as the setting of the poem or the time or period
during which the literary element was developed. Following this fact, the respective discourse will
concentrate on two particular poems. These comprise The Weary Blues by Langston Hughes and
Lepanto by G. K. Chesterton. From a physical standpoint, both poems do not possess any
corresponding features in respect to the settings that they respectively... Show more content on

K. Chesterton are written in different contexts with each poem documenting some of the influences
that characterized the respective literary compositions. Hughes poem, The Weary Blues was written
during the 1920s period based on its representation of an African American persona (The Negro) as
the lead and sole character in a setting that does not gratify his basic needs. At the time, the social
framework was heavily defined by racial segregation between the white majority and the African
American population, which largely comprised slaves. Additionally, regulations such as the Jim
Crow Laws succeeded in the reinforcement of racism by establishing a social based boundary
between white people and African Americans. The hardships that the latter encountered at the time
influenced the creation as well as development of different literary compositions. Topics that were
covered at the time focused on issues surrounding bigotry such as illiteracy, destitution,
infringement on personal rights, unemployment, social immobility, and significant racial

Difference Between Impressionism And Impressionism

English Composition

Realism and Impressionism Art has progressed in many ways throughout history; two prominent
styles however that define the evolution of art are Realism and Impressionism. Realism is defined
as treatment of forms, colors, space, etc., in such a manner as to emphasize their correspondence to
actuality or to ordinary visual experience (realism). Two artists that are well known for this style of
art are Gustave Courbet and Jean François Millet. Impressionism is defined as a style of painting
developed in the last third of the 19th century, characterized chiefly by short brushstrokes of bright
colors in immediate juxtaposition to represent the effect of light on objects (impressionism). Claude
Monet and Pierre Auguste Renoir are pioneers of defining the Impressionist movement. These
artists use a variety of techniques, perspectives, subject matter, as well as influences to create the
art we see hanging in museums today. Realism is easily identified when we analyze the works of
Gustave Courbet and Jean François Millet. 19th century French painter Courbet is even known for
creating the term Realism. Courbet aspired to find liberty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Both of these art styles use similar subject matter such as landscapes and everyday
life(Timmons). The scenes are simply presented in a different way. All of the above artists use
color and light to depict shapes and give the viewer perspective yet color and light in both styles
is used in an extremely contradictory manner. Each of these art styles are meant to depict true
forms of objects and how the artist chose to interpret them is what defines each artform as a
whole(Timmons). Realism is what we see, Impressionism is how we see is how Joshua Timmons
describes these movements in order to provide a better understanding of how the artist has decided

Maple Syrp Disease
Maple Syrup Urine Disease is a potently fatal disorder which affects the body s ability of
breaking down three Branched chain amino acids: isoleucine, leucine and valine. The inability
of breaking down the three branched amino acid chain is due to defect in an enzyme called
branched chain alpha ketoacid dehydrogenase. Which is the enzyme responsible for breaking
down isoleucine, leucine and valine. This will result in high levels of the branched amino acids
in plasma and alpha ketoacid in urine. The presence of alpha ketoacid in urine will result in a
burned maple syrup odder. Hence the name, Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD). Maple Syrup
disease is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern. Both of the parents have to be a carrier of the

Experiment On The Concentration Of Acetic Acid
Year 11 Chemistry Summative Practical
CHEMICAL QUANTITIES
Aim:
To calculate the concentration of acetic acid in vinegar, CH3COOH via titration methods.
Apparatus:
0.100 M standard solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH)
Household vinegar (CH3COOH)
Phenolphthalein indicator
Distilled water
200ml volumetric flask
250 ml conical flask
20ml volumetric pipette
Burette
Retort stand
Filter funnel
Method:
Before the commencement of the practical, all necessary glassware and measurement tools were
rinsed appropriately. The pipette was rinsed three times with vinegar solution, whereas the
volumetric flask was rinsed three times with distilled water. 20mL of the vinegar solution was
measured and transferred to the volumetric flask, where it was diluted with distilled water by filling
the flask to the 200mL graduation line. A 20ml aliquot of the aforementioned solution was
extracted from the volumetric flask via the volumetric pipette and subsequently transferred to the
conical flask. Three drops of phenolphthalein indicator were then added. The burette was filled with
the provided NaOH solution of 0.1M, with volume measurements taken from the bottom of the
meniscus. The conical flask was placed under the burette, from which a rough titration of the
vinegar solution began. Titrations halted once a permanent color change was visible in the conical
flask. This process was repeated until three concordant titre values were obtained.

Summary Of Who Invented The Lightbulb
Elizabeth Palermo, the staff writer of Live Science magazine that focuses on innovative progresses
in areas as science, technology, environment, history and etc. Palermo writes about science and
technology. George Washington University was a graduate school where Palermo graduated with
B.A. Palermo s article Who Invented the Lightbulb? gave interesting facts about scientists and
physicist who desired to succeed in developing the first lightbulb that help light up the world.
The articles Who Invented the Lightbulb? contain valuable insights about the history of lightbulb.
The author organized her article in chronological order to point out that Thomas Edison was not first
scientist who wanted to succeed on inventing lightbulb. Long before Edison created his laboratory,
many other inventors tried unsuccessfully to invent not just a lightbulb, but the lightbulb that can

technology was introduced to the world. Starting with Italian inventor named Alessandro Volta,

One of the most popular myths that she wrote about was a myth about the invention of the

chemists, and inventors who spent more than a half of their lives in the laboratories to create first
lightbulb that would be working and not only providing light but be a very efficient source of light.
The author explains that Edison used lightbulbs concepts of previous inventors and by using then
tested more than a thousand materials that would be more durable, efficient, and unexpansive to
hold the light. After many tests, Edison finally found a material that would last a fairly long

The Monarch Butterfly Annual Migration
Introduction
The monarch butterfly annual migration is a visually spectacular feat, in terms of the number of
butterflies flying to their overwintering sites and as well as the masses that congregates at the
overwintering sites in Mexico. The idea that monarch butterflies exhibited migratory behavior was
once controversial, it was not until Fred Urquhart and his colleagues pioneered a tagging work with
the eastern North American population for decades that revealed the long distance of the monarch
migration. The tagging efforts that began in 1937 lead to the discovery of their overwintering sites
in Mexico in 1975. With its long distance traveled and the nature of the predictable and the
repetitive nature of its annual migration. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Environmental factors such as the decrease in day length, cooler temperature and aging milkweed
trigger the monarch to begin its migration, although the precise environmental trigger that initiates
migration is not well understood. When spring arrives, they become reproductively active, mate
and leave Mexico to re migrate north. During the remigration northward the females lay fertilized
eggs on newly emerged milkweeds in the southern parts of the United States (Reppert and others
2010). Their offspring s will also continue the migration up northward to repopulate the northern
section of the monarch habitat range. Even though the monarch migration is repetitive and cyclic in
nature, their migration cycle is multigenerational. It takes about two generations of spring and
summer butterflies that are following the progressive northward emergence of milkweeds to
repopulate the entire range and therefore completing the migration cycle (Reppert and others 2010).
Time Compensated Sun Compass (The Navigational process)
The Monarch butterfly uses a map and a compass like other long distance migrants. The map sense
is needed to determine which direction they are to fly and to stop. The compass sense is utilized so
that the migrants can orient in the southern direction throughout the course of their migration. It
has been shown that the monarch may not have a true map sense, although the monarch

The Pseudo Effect Of Synthetic Cannabinoid
The Pseudo Effect of Synthetic Cannabinoid
As of November of 2016, 26 out of 50 states in the U.S. have legalized cannabis for either medical
or recreational use. Many of the remaining states have decriminalized the possession of small
quantities and others are on the ballot to legalize the plant. Most would agree that the legalization
of cannabis alone is one of the most controversial topics in the recent years. However, there is a
newer, better and more sought after product in the market. Synthetic cannabinoid has multiple street
names such as K2 and Spice . The line of product is now in popular demand due to its similar
effect, convenience and price compared to the raw cannabis bud. However, this synthetic
cannabinoid has caused a high number of patients to visit the emergency room as well as reports to
local poison control centers, and must be further examined to fully understand its short term as well
as long term effects.
There are several species of cannabis. The two that are most common are Cannabis sativa and
Cannabis indica. These two species vary in appearance as well as effects, and through
crossbreeding, unlimited strain varieties are created. For an infrequent user, smoking any strain of
cannabis may feel the same. However, when comparing these two species, the difference is
immense. Cannabis indica plants are short, have wider leaves and give users the feeling of
calmness and relaxation. On the contrary, Cannabis sativa plants are tall, have

Feminism In Sarah Waters Affinity Extract
Throughout this essay I will be closely analysing how feminism plays an exceedingly prominent
role in Sarah Waters Affinity extract. Feminism refers to the advocacy of women s rights and the
inclination of equality, both of which are controversial and arguable throughout the reading. I will
not only be evaluating how women are treated by men but take notice to how the women in the
extract react to the disrespect. The powerful genderrole of the man was particularity profane as I
will talk in more detail about later on.
Feminism comes into view early on in the extract when we are introduced to Miss Isherwood who

Pearl Harbor Air Raid Analysis
Because of the sudden attacks, the air raid on Pearl Harbor had three very unusual features
regarding the injuries for the medical personnel to deal with. First, there was a great number of
casuaIties received at the hospitals in a short period of time; second, many patients had been
overboard at some point and were covered with fuel oil; third, there was a very high percentage of
burn cases (Hayden). How did the hospitals handle all of these tragedies at once and remain
successful?
Just 36 hours before the air raid, a lecture was given to all the medical personnel in the area about
how to handle the quantities of wounded in an attack setting. After, they had a scenario were
stress was placed on the personnel to quickly and adequately clean wounds by soap and water,
followed by the surgical removal of lacerated or contaminated tissue. Three criteria were to be
fulfilled: (1) obtaining normal color, (2) bleeding, and (3) muscle contraction. When this was
completed, the next step was to place in the wound an adequate amount of a sulfonamide drug,
either sulfanilamide and sulfathiazole. No wounds were to be sutured, but instead left wide open or

It is very common for the news media to cover political topics that impact our society and
American culture. Presidential campaigns are becoming increasingly vicious as news sources
dig up harmful dirt to impact approval ratings and the candidates chances of winning the

campaign of 2016. The information distributed by the various news media sites impacted the
opinions and voting of many Americans. The tragic event of 9/11 had a lasting impact on the
American people and their stance on War. The information received from the government and
news media made many Americans feel ok with going to war and that is was the necessary thing
to do. Sometimes the information presented my not always to the full story as society is told
only what they want them to hear. The issue around Prop 8 and the right for marriage equality
was also a hot topic that got a lot of attention. Religious people felt like marriage should only be
between a man and a woman as other people felt like all people deserve equal rights and denying
the right for same sex marriage was a violation of civil rights. Soon after the LGBT community was

Biblical Allusions in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald tells the story of a world lost to superficiality and greed.
Falsehood and deception are the currency which fuels the characters in the novel. Dwelling in this
fallen world, Fitzgerald has placed a fallen god. Gatsby is bathed in descriptions that identify him
as the Son of God. Fitzgeraldmakes a conscious effort to clothe this character with imagery and
actions to make him the patron deity of this fallen world, but Gatsbyis too much enveloped by his
surroundings to save them and is consumed in the attempt. Despite the biblicalallusions, strong
images and explicit statements identifying Gatsby with Christ, the prevailing tone of the novel

22:14). At the party, one of the girls states that Gatsby doesn t want trouble with anybody (48).
Jesus described himself as gentle and lowly in heart and commanded his followers to turn the
other cheek (Mt. 11:29, 5:29). When Nick prepares to leave the party, he looks for Gatsby to
apologize for not having known him in the garden (57). These words echo two major biblical
images. First, Adam hides from God in the Garden of Eden. Even more closely tied to this image
is the scene at the empty tomb where Mary Magdalene mistakes the risen Jesus for the gardener.
Gatsby s mysterious origins allude to the confusion about Jesus authority. Tom asks where is he
from, I mean? And what does he do? (53) When Jesus preaches in the synagogue at Nazareth, the
people ask Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works? (Mt. 13:34) On at least
two occasions, Gatsby tells Nick that they are going up : first in the hydroplane and later when
they ride up to New York for lunch (57, 68). This ascendant diction suggests that, like Jesus, Gatsby
had come from God and was going to God (Jn. 13:3). It also follows the biblical convention by
which all travel to Jerusalem is described by the Hebrew word aliah : to go up. Fitzgerald even put
Jesus words on Gatsby s lips, as in the car when Gatsby asks Nick what s your opinion of me

Bilingual Education to ban or not to ban?
When we speak about this country The United States of America we automatically think of the
great number of languages people speak in this country. Take California as an example. It is one of
the border states of America, and this state is made up mostly of immigrants. As a result, most
people in this state are either bilingual or even trilingual. In order for the immigrant students to
become integrated into this country, they must learn English, and Bilingual Education can help them
assimilate faster to this new country. Nevertheless, people continue to vote against and ban
Bilingual Education because they believe that if the student is here in America, he or she should be
treated the same as the native speakers in order to save money and for him or her to better fit in.
Even though many people criticize bilingual education, I personally am one of the supportive fans
of it because Bilingual Education allows new immigrant students to learn English at a reasonable
pace, assimilate to a new environment, maintain their academic specialties, and not to fall behind.
What is Bilingual Education? The term refers to the practice of teaching non English speaking
children in their native language, and was developed in the 1960 s; these programs were intended
to allow students to progress in science, math and social studies while they learned English in a
separate class.

The s Theory Of Structural Empowerment
With the global nursing shortage, organizations are looking for strategies to retain nurses. One
strategy for nurse retention is, encouraging nurses to get certified, according to research studies.
The population affected by nurse certification is the nurse, the patient, and the organization.
Organizations need to invest into getting nurses certified in their specialty area. Research proves
that certified nurses self perception is a sense of empowerment. The Iowa Model of Evidence
Based Practice will be utilized to guide the change to practice. A literature search was conducted
using one of the world s largest database search engines, the Academic Search Complete (EBSCO).
The search resulted in over 300 journal articles, which were then evaluated and categorized using
the evidence hierarchy rating system. The theoretical framework was the Kanter s theory of
structural empowerment. Fostering the nurses self perception of empowerment, which comes with
being certified is a mediator of personal growth; increased competence and confidence; enhanced
knowledge and self esteem; and ultimately retention. Specialty nursecertification proves the nurse
continued commitment to education and practice, which are ongoing instead of episodic, and thus
more consistent with the changes in healthcare. With the rising cuts in healthcare a constraint
organization may face with the implementation of a plan to encourage nurses to get certified is
funding.

Proteins Are Colonic Epithelial Receptors For C. Difficile...
Finally, a paper published in September 2016 reveals that frizzled proteins are colonic epithelial
receptors for C. difficile toxin B [22]. As they are introducing their studies of identifying
potential TcdB receptors, they highlight some downfalls in previous studies, such as the fact
that whilst CSPG4 was showed as an interacting receptor with Toxin B in HeLa and HT29 cells
[17], CSPG4 is not actually present in the colonic epithelium [23]. Also, they comment on the
fact that PVRL3 was shown only to be associated with TcdB cytotoxicity and not proof of
PVRL3 acting as a receptor itself [13], however, there was evidence of PVRL3 interaction with
TcdB, as discussed above [14]. This study used a genome wide screen via CRISPR/Cas9
mutagenesis and identification of TcdB resistant mutants, which identified the Wnt receptor
frizzled family (FZDs) as TcdB receptors [22]. This mutant screening with native TcdB also
confirmed CSPG4 as TcdB receptor and further studies showed it is CROP dependent [17, 22].
The highest ranking mutant of plasma membranes when screened with the truncated TcdB1 1830
was FZD2, a member of the Wnt receptor frizzled family (FZDs) [22]. In healthy cells, the Wnt
signaling, in which FZD proteins contribute to, are critical signal pathways involved in
proliferation and self renewal function of colonic epithelial cells [24, 25]. TcdB competes for Wnt
to bind to these regions, inhibiting Wnt signaling, which in turn affects the health of colonic cells
[22]. It

Italian Piano Research Paper
Two types of stringed keyboard instrument were available to the household or court musician
from the 16th century to the middle of the 18th: the harpsichord and its near relations, the spinet
and virginal; and the clavichord. In the harpsichord family the string is plucked by a small
plectrum, originally of quill. The variety of sound from these plucked instruments is achieved not
primarily by finger pressure, but more subtly by phrasing and articulation. Variety of tonal color
can be obtained, on a harpsichord by judicious choice of registration. The harpsichord was used
both for solo performance and accompanying in chamber groups and in larger ensembles of the
period. It typically had two sets of strings per key, tuned either to the same pitch or with one set
sounding an octave higher (a 4 register). The registers were controlled by hand stops above the
keyboard. Two manuals (keyboards) were to be found on certain larger instruments, which usually

Egypt And Mesopotamia
Architecture in Egypt and Mesopotamia When you think about ancient architecture, what questions
arise? Do you ask yourself about its history, durability, and structure? For example, Egypt is
known for its pyramids, while Mesopotamia is known for its temple. Both are influential and
recognizable after so many years and will continue to be for years to come, those questions come
without a doubt to mind. In the following paragraphs, these questions will be answered and
explained in depth regarding these two civilizations, Egyptand Mesopotamia.
In Egypt, architecture started in what was considered to be the Early Dynamic period and
construction lasted about 20 to 40 years to complete. The Pyramids were built to honor ... Show

Egyptians used sand and stones, whereas Mesopotamians used clay and mud. Egypt structures are
visited by tourists year around. However, the Meidum Pyramid did cease to last and collapsed
because it was resting on sand versus rocks. In which, the Mesopotamians mud brick technique was
later adapted by the Egyptians. Unfortunately, for Mesopotamia there is only one structure that still
remains, a few were reconstructed and others were just gathered from archeological evidence.
Historical evidence collected indicate climate change, affected the soil caused by mineral salt
leading to broken bricks. Another reason for the reconstruction was power domination by the
Elamites, they destroyed and rebuilt on the same location either being the same structure or ones
similar to the previous with modifications.
These two civilizations have brought the most memorable structures, considering the techniques
used and unique designs. Egypt will always be admired for the Great Pyramid of Giza, known as
one of the last original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World ( Mark, 2016 ). The great pyramid of
Giza was constructed as a tomb for Pharaoh Khufu, including three chambers with two mortuary
temples and three known as satellite pyramids dedicated to Khufu s wives. Architectures also

Pharaoh Djoser, it was surrounded by decorations and ceremonial structures. The Great Sphinx of

Evaluation Of Single Cylinder Direct Injection Essay
This paper presents exergetic evaluation of single cylinder direct injection, water cooled diesel
engine at varying operating conditions. Normally, first law of thermodynamics has been used to
analyze the engine cycle process. However recent research indicates that the first law of
thermodynamics is inadequate to study the diesel engineperformance. Exergy analysis is used to
determine in detail the amounts of losses in a system and locations where they occur, and the
processes that cause them so the application of exergy analysis for diesel engine allows
determining the sources of irreversibilities and obtaining more accurate information about engine
efficiency. An Exergy based performance analysis is based on the second law of thermodynamics
that overcomes the limitation of an energy based analysis.
Consider the advantages of second law of thermodynamics over first law, this study includes
exergy analysis of single cylinder, 4 stroke, water cooled, on a single cylinder 8.1 kW direct
injection, diesel engine. In this study first and second laws of thermodynamics ae applied to
analyze the quantity and quality of energy in diesel engine cycle. The experimental data were
collected using steady state test condition which enables the accurate measurements of air, fuel,
and cling water flow rates, engine load, and all relevant temperatures. Each experiment was
performed at five different speeds between 1300 rev/min and 2400 rev/min at intervals of 300 rev

The Greco-Persian Wars
The division and unification of Greek city states could have come from many different things,
however war seems to be the common attribute. War is able to divide and unify societies,
cultures, and religions throughout the world. Separation is also a cause of war, for example, civil
wars have happened all around the world in order to break apart a governing body.
According to history.com, Athens and Sparta, both powerful Greek city states, fought as allies in
the Greco Persian Wars between 499 and 449 B.C. In the wake of the Persian retreat, however,
Athens grew more powerful and tensions rose, escalating into nearly three decades of war. In
many cases, differences or opposing ideas and beliefs bring the destruction of war. For example,

The Art Institute Of Chicago
Next time you are walking through the Art Institute of Chicago I would highly recommend a visit
to the Gift of Edlis|Neeson Collection, located on the second floor, gallery 292A. Here you will
find a tantalizing array of modern day contemporary art that delivers a sensory overload wherever
you turn. Nestled in between the copiousness of talent you will find three offerings from a
prominent living contemporary artist called Jasper Johnstitled Alphabet (1959), Figure 4 (1959),
and Target (1961). Although at times his work faced rejection from the critics of individualism of
abstract expressionists his life s journey sculptured his path to who he is as a person and who he
has become as a modern day renowned contemporary artist.
In 1958, gallery owner Leo Castelli discovered Johns while visiting the Rauschenberg s studio. This
was an important time in Johns art career as his style had started to settle more into contemporary art
due to his personal relationship with Robert Rauschenberg. According to The Society for
Contemporary Art Castelli gave him his first solo show. It was here that Alfred Barr, the founding
director of New York s Museum of Modern Art
, purchased four works from this show. In the latter
part of the 1950 s, Jasper Johns arose as the shinning star in the American art scene (Wildfire
Media 2015). His paintings of maps, flags, and targets led the artistic community away from
Abstract Expressionism toward a new emphasis of Neo Dada and Pop Art. Today, as

Personalized Learning Is Bad For Students
Why Personalized Learning Is Bad For Students
The debate of personalized learning has risen up in school districts all across the United States.
Hearing about the personalization of learning, which is a structured curriculum solely based on the
students needs. Teachers soon turn into tutors, helping each individual studentwith their own
struggles and questions. Since each student has their own schedule, classrooms aren t conducted in
the same manner students are glued to their own computers in the classroom. This means no
projects, no field trips and no learning methods to grasp the students attention and get them on
bored with learning. With that said, not one learning method is guaranteed to suit all students.

Just because a student can pass a focus area (10 multiple choice questions) doesn t mean that they

The film, Before Sunset, is about a couple who spent a passionate day together and separated get

landmarks and classical architecture are pervading over the city and it represents a history of
France. Another unique about the Paris is that unlike any other cities, Paris makes the best use of

Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz
Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz
This part basically focuses on how Mintz tries to tie together the disparate geographies from
Northern Europe up to the Caribbean. It will be documented that Sweetness and Power by Sidney
Mintz actually discusses and illuminates the economic and social history revolving around sugar
consumption and production in Europe as well as its colonies, predominantly focusing on England.
Mintz examines the structure of power, which made it probable for sugar to actually turn out to be
the first luxury turned necessity that propelled a revolution within lifestyle and diet, principally
within the working class in the upsurge of capitalism and Industrial Revolution. Mintz further
argues that the contribution of sugar to several developed countries has been substantial, and that,
as a result of the history of sugar in England plus the restructuring within the working class,
individuals in United States and the United Kingdom have actually lost their autonomy towards
food . From the novel we will realize that Mintz essentially attempts to bring together the disparate
geographies basically from Northern Europe up to Caribbean. This has purely been due to the
production of sugar in Europe. It has resulted to trades between the neighboring countries which has
increased the interactions between the people through trade contracts. This evident as Mintz argues
that The development of plantation production beyond the Americas represented the

The Relationship between Strategic Planning and Effective...
Critically evaluate significance strategic planning relates effective leadership
Introduction
Leadership is the set of capabilities that a person has to influence the minds of people in a group
of persons, making this team to work with enthusiasm, but the reality is different, in achieving
goals and objectives. (Koys, 2001, pp26 33) It is also understood as the ability to take initiative,
manage, hold, promote, encourage, motivate and evaluate a group or team. (Goffee and Jones,
2000, pp117 28) In business management leadership is the exercise of executive activity in a project
effectively and efficiently, whether personal or institutional management (within the administrative
process of the organization).
Literature review
In the analysis of organizational development is necessary to have a good agent of change, which
is a person who deliberately acts on the environment to facilitate or promote the implementation of
the projected change. In this regard, Block (2003, pp45 49), he adds any person or system that
contributes through direct or indirect to the implementation of change is a change agent.
However, the dictionary of Aurelio Buarque de Holanda, defines the word agent, as one who
practices the action, acting, author, originator, sponsor, promoter, promoter. But that makes sense to
adapt the Cameron et al. (1999, pp4 9), we can say that the agent of organizational development, is

there s treacherous undercurrents all the time. I think I m standing on solid ground, but then I

and sociological themes. It addresses issues such as lack of formal training and opportunity to

She is actually a complex character which the filmmakers use to highlight various concepts of
popular and sociological culture. Firstly she is shown to be a woman who is judged by those
around her because of how she looks and how she has a knack for behaving erratically. She is
even judged by the women who she works with as they consider her nothing short of White
Trash because of how she dresses and because of the mess her personal life is in. Secondly, they
construct the concept of an individual s capability regardless of their gender and class through
Erin s character. She does not have formal training of being a lawyer yet she is able to
understand the technicalities of law based on her own intelligence and capabilities. Thirdly, they
handle the struggle of proving yourself despite being a woman in the 1990 s. According to the
US census of 1990, despite starting to become more professionally aware women occupied
clerical and administrative support positions in the 1990 s ( We The American Women , 1993).
They were underrepresented in holding professional titles such as doctors, lawyers etc. Erin is an
antithesis to this concept. Even though she begs for a secretarial position at the beginning of the

Via the Amicus, employees are challenged to keep the Responsible Business message top of

remaining profitable. A very difficult feat in a country as diverse as South Africa.
The introduction and subsequent adoption of a regulatory recommendation like King III provides
companies with the opportunity to activate their vision, culture, strategy and brand to not only
benefit the companies but their employees, communities and the environment that they operate in.
Companies do not only rely on the laws and regulations that govern them to keep them accountable,
they then also get the input of their various stakeholders. The community now has the opportunity
to influence the direction of the companies that operate around them challenging them on whether
they do or do not uphold their values and providing a platform for companies to do right by the
communities. The group s structures, processes and culture enhance governance and ethics. My
observation though is that the bigger a company, the longer and more complex the process of
applying ethics and governance

Management was not allowing adequate time for maintenance work. It was reported that two
months before the explosion a maintenance worker could not complete repair work on mining
equipment because it was needed for work underground. Because management allowed broken
equipment to be involved in dangerous mining operations this would be a human hazard.
Maintenance workers were also required to modify machinery in order to conform to safety
regulations. This is a human hazard because workers are required to work with machinery that
could possibly be dangerous and employees maybe using the machinery improperly. Management
did not encourage the development of an occupational health and safety committee. The company
never encouraged the committee to meet and discuss safety concerns and management was not

investigations into this problem produced irregularities. Many orders issued by mining inspectors

How Is Edmund Relevant In The Chronicles Of Narnia

that it explains and enhances the character of Edmund. Edmund is a crucial character like

Comparing The Hero In The Last Of The Mohicans
American Romanticism set the tone for typical American literature. James Fenimore Cooper set
the bar with the archetypal traits that define American literature, appearing from books like The
Last of the Mohicans to current films like Indiana Jones s adventure Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Three of the archetypal traits that appear in both timeless classics and current masterpieces are a
brave faultless hero, daring rescues, and loyal companions. The first and most important part of
almost any story is its hero. What makes the heroes in American Romantic literature so special
is their bravery, skillfulness, and faultlessness. The main hero in The Last of the Mohicans,
Natty Bumppo, is a brave and skilled Native American who makes wise decisions and never
makes a mistake. He may be temporarily overcome by the enemy, but he always bounces back
and takes what is his, through reasoning with a chieftain or through force against a military
leader. Similarly, Indiana Jones is also brave and skilled with a whip, but he is less faultless. His
fear of snakes deters him in some situations, but he always overcomes his fear to save the day. Both

trend of introducing twists and turns into a story to keep the audience on edge. The Last of the

The credibility of a person depends on many different elements. Credibility can pertain to
trustworthiness and expertise. Trustworthiness is affected by things like reliability and
characteristics of the person. Expertise is affected by credentials and proven skill (Flanagin,
Metzger, 4). The same person may be perceived as credible at one point in time, but may lack
credibility later in time. Credibility is largely based on what we as a society are experiencing
during that time period. Small things may affect credibility that we would not originally think
to include. If a person were to see an ad every day about a certain lawyer, they might think of the
lawyer if it comes a time for them to need a lawyer. But if someone were to hear about how
wonderful a certain lawyer is from a friend or coworker, that person would be more likely to use
that lawyer if the need arose. It stands to reason that people are more likely to trust people they
know blindly when it comes to credibility. Appearance is another aspect of credibility that would
not always be considered. Much of the time it is subconscious, but people are more likely to trust
a person or service if the staff or spokesperson is attractive physically

In the second pilot study we estimated the effect of global and specific cognitive functions in
restricting participation in daily life activities. The Self Reported ICF Brief Core Set Scale for HL
in its simple and initial version, obviously, reveals that memory and hearing dysfunctions and
inability to listen and communicate effectively were the major problems that limit and restrict
participation in social interactions followed by attention deficits, temperament and personality,
emotional problems, and sensation of tinnitus. These finding were verified and confirmed by the
standardized outcome measures. In regards to the environmental factors, it is interesting that the
majority of the participants rated background noise and loud sound as barriers, while majority
rated family support, family attitude, and social attitude as facilitators that have a relevant
influence on functioning. For older adults HA users, the majority rated HAs use as facilitators,

to change the world... For the better or the worst. Hashirama was a very humble and kind person

clans as they were seen as the leaders and created an alliance. During their time of peace they

The Man From U.n.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E
I recently went to go see The Man from U.N.C.L.E., a movie reboot of the television series of the
same name that ran from 1964 1968 starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum. I never saw the
original television series, so I went into the movie theater with no idea what to expect.
The movie is set in the 1960s, during the height of the Cold War. A Nazi nuclear scientist who
collaborated with the Unites States after the end of World War II has gone missing. His research
could fast track nuclear weapon making and therefore upset the uneasy balance that has held since
the end of the war. C.I.A. agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) is sent to collect the scientist s
estranged daughter, Gabby Teller (Alicia Vikander), from East Berlin to have her help locate her
father. KGB agent Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) is sent on the same mission for the Soviet Union
, but fails to stop Napoleon and Gabby from escaping over the Berlin Wall. When it becomes clear
that the scientists is being held by an Italian criminal organization that were Nazi sympathizers, the
C.I.A. and KGB decide to run a joint operation with their top two spies to retrieve him in order to
ensure there is not another war. Gabby is brought along to help them infiltrate the organization
since her uncle is one of the members.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E has not done overly well in the box office, but I found it an enjoyable
movie. Enjoyable does not mean that it was a well made movie, a few of the

What It Means To Be A Peak Performer
In this discussion I will explain what it means to be a peak performer . A peak performer, is
someone who take risk and move beyond secure comfort zones. They make small steps that lead
to long term goals, continually acquire new skills, and perfect their competence. When you take
a risk, that means your doing something that you re not sure about. In life we re all faced with
many challenges that requires us to take certain risk. The key to it all is perfecting your mistakes
while working toward your goal. In this unit I learned that a peak performer is someone who sets
a goal and take the proper steps to reach them. Someone that s not perfect, but yet there re open to
new ideas and new ways of learning. After reading this unit I would say

Techniques for Estimating Task Duration in Project Management
TECHNIQUES FOR ESTIMATING TASK DURATIONS IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT As
part of planning a project, tasks are assigned to project team members. Durations for task
completion are also specified. Task duration estimation is necessary since it helps in cost and
resource estimation. Iranmanesh and Mokhtari (2008), further affirmed the importance of project
duration estimation by saying that, estimation of time and cost to complete work in a project and
follow up them during implementation are major contributors to success or failure of a project, and
hence very salient for the Project Manager. According to Hill, Thomas and Allen (2000),
developing accurate estimates of overall project duration and its separate activities, is critical in...

The project was in northern Ghana, where it was difficult to get fingerlings. We therefore
contracted an expert to raise the fingerlings for us. This made a huge impact on the project
success where a Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development travelled all the
way from Accra to Wa to partake in a symbolic harvest of the first stock of fish. The project was
described as a great innovation that provided an alternative source of sustainable livelihood in the
dry season for community members of northern Ghana. Seeking expert advice made us
implemented the project as if we were professionals in fish culture. Three point technique: This
technique is also known as Programme Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT). It originated in
the 1950s during the U.S.N. Nautilus nuclear submarine project. This technique takes into account
task variability and uses weighted averages of task duration. Therefore the risk associated time
variations are minimized (Wysocki, 2009). The technique requires the following three estimates:
Optimistic (O) Shortest duration one experience if everything goes right Pessimistic (P) Duration
one experience if everything that could go wrong actually went wrong yet the task was completed.
Most likely (M) The duration they usually experience in performing the task. E = O+4M+P 6

of expert advice. In this

The people of Shanty Town have been scavenging for a little while now. Everyone who lives in Shanty Town has to scavenge for scrap so that they can trade that scrap for food and maybe even clothes if the right person comes through town. It is 2030 and a devastating thirteen year world war has left many countries to collapse and left in trash and ruins. It has only been two years since they remaining countries (China, Russia, Germany, and Japan) have signed a truce, but secretly, each country is just rebuilding their troops to have another war for total control of the world. He went out scavenging again to look for more scrap and out there he saw a strange looking girl. Most of the town had turned to crime to feed themselves. Seeing that this girl had a large amount of money on her, he went to sneak up on her and steal the money, but she started to walk away so he quickened his pace. Before he got to her, she opened a trap door and hopped inside. Confused that he had never discovered this door out here he went up closer to it. It was camouflaged to look like a bunch of junk and actually remembered walking past it the other day. Quietly, he opened it up and jumped through the hole to land on a stone floor seven feet down. He crept through a somewhat open hallway to a door. It was a wooden door with a door knob. He turned it and was thankful that it did not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Chesterton Poetry has been used across different contexts, particularly in historical settings. At one point, compositions such as poems were written in an effort to document certain dimensions that prevailed during specific times and periods. Interestingly, compositions written in different contexts possessed definite similarities regardless of aspects such as the setting of the poem or the time or period during which the literary element was developed. At the time, the social framework was heavily defined by racial segregation between the white majority and the African American population, which largely comprised slaves. Additionally, regulations such as the Jim Crow Laws succeeded in the reinforcement of racism by establishing a social based boundary between white people and African Americans. • 5. Difference Between Impressionism And Impressionism Emily Musick Erin Brabazon English Composition 31 January 2016 Realism and Impressionism Art has progressed in many ways throughout history; two prominent styles however that define the evolution of art are Realism and Impressionism. Realism is defined as treatment of forms, colors, space, etc., in such a manner as to emphasize their correspondence to actuality or to ordinary visual experience (realism). Two artists that are well known for this style of art are Gustave Courbet and Jean FranГ§ois Millet. Impressionism is defined as a style of painting developed in the last third of the 19th century, characterized chiefly by short brushstrokes of bright colors in immediate juxtaposition to represent the effect of light on objects (impressionism). Claude Monet and Pierre Auguste Renoir are pioneers of defining the Impressionist movement. These artists use a variety of techniques, perspectives, subject matter, as well as influences to create the art we see hanging in museums today. Realism is easily identified when we analyze the works of Gustave Courbet and Jean FranГ§ois Millet. 19th century French painter Courbet is even known for creating the term Realism. During the remigration northward the females lay fertilized eggs on newly emerged milkweeds in the southern parts of the United States (Reppert and others 2010). Their offspring s will also continue the migration up northward to repopulate the northern section of the monarch habitat range. Even though the monarch migration is repetitive and cyclic in nature, their migration cycle is multigenerational. When Nick prepares to leave the party, he looks for Gatsby to apologize for not having known him in the garden (57). These words echo two major biblical images. First, Adam hides from God in the Garden of Eden. Even more closely tied to this image is the scene at the empty tomb where Mary Magdalene mistakes the risen Jesus for the gardener. When we speak about this country The United States of America we automatically think of the great number of languages people speak in this country. Take California as an example. It is one of the border states of America, and this state is made up mostly of immigrants. As a result, most people in this state are either bilingual or even trilingual. In order for the immigrant students to become integrated into this country, they must learn English, and Bilingual Education can help them assimilate faster to this new country. Nevertheless, people continue to vote against and ban Bilingual Education because they believe that if the student is here in America, he or she should be treated the same as the native speakers in order to save money and for him or her to better fit in. Even though many people criticize bilingual education, I personally am one of the supportive fans of it because Bilingual Education allows new immigrant students to learn English at a reasonable pace, assimilate to a new environment, maintain their academic specialties, and not to fall behind. One strategy for nurse retention is, encouraging nurses to get certified, according to research studies. The population affected by nurse certification is the nurse, the patient, and the organization. Organizations need to invest into getting nurses certified in their specialty area. Research proves that certified nurses self perception is a sense of empowerment. The Iowa Model of Evidence Based Practice will be utilized to guide the change to practice. A literature search was conducted using one of the world s largest database search engines, the Academic Search Complete (EBSCO). • 20. Proteins Are Colonic Epithelial Receptors For C. Difficile... Finally, a paper published in September 2016 reveals that frizzled proteins are colonic epithelial receptors for C. difficile toxin B [22]. As they are introducing their studies of identifying potential TcdB receptors, they highlight some downfalls in previous studies, such as the fact that whilst CSPG4 was showed as an interacting receptor with Toxin B in HeLa and HT29 cells [17], CSPG4 is not actually present in the colonic epithelium [23]. Also, they comment on the fact that PVRL3 was shown only to be associated with TcdB cytotoxicity and not proof of PVRL3 acting as a receptor itself [13], however, there was evidence of PVRL3 interaction with TcdB, as discussed above [14]. This study used a genome wide screen via CRISPR/Cas9 mutagenesis and identification of TcdB resistant mutants, which identified the Wnt receptor frizzled family (FZDs) as TcdB receptors [22]. This mutant screening with native TcdB also confirmed CSPG4 as TcdB receptor and further studies showed it is CROP dependent [17, 22]. The highest ranking mutant of plasma membranes when screened with the truncated TcdB1 1830 was FZD2, a member of the Wnt receptor frizzled family (FZDs) [22]. In healthy cells, the Wnt signaling, in which FZD proteins contribute to, are critical signal pathways involved in proliferation and self renewal function of colonic epithelial cells [24, 25]. TcdB competes for Wnt to bind to these regions, inhibiting Wnt signaling, which in turn affects the health of colonic cells [22]. It ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 26. The Art Institute Of Chicago Next time you are walking through the Art Institute of Chicago I would highly recommend a visit to the Gift of Edlis|Neeson Collection, located on the second floor, gallery 292A. Here you will find a tantalizing array of modern day contemporary art that delivers a sensory overload wherever you turn. Nestled in between the copiousness of talent you will find three offerings from a prominent living contemporary artist called Jasper Johnstitled Alphabet (1959), Figure 4 (1959), and Target (1961). Although at times his work faced rejection from the critics of individualism of abstract expressionists his life s journey sculptured his path to who he is as a person and who he has become as a modern day renowned contemporary artist. In 1958, gallery owner Leo Castelli discovered Johns while visiting the Rauschenberg s studio. This was an important time in Johns art career as his style had started to settle more into contemporary art due to his personal relationship with Robert Rauschenberg. According to The Society for Contemporary Art Castelli gave him his first solo show. It was here that Alfred Barr, the founding director of New York s Museum of Modern Art , purchased four works from this show. In the latter part of the 1950 s, Jasper Johns arose as the shinning star in the American art scene (Wildfire Media 2015). His paintings of maps, flags, and targets led the artistic community away from Abstract Expressionism toward a new emphasis of Neo Dada and Pop Art. Today, as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It will be documented that Sweetness and Power by Sidney Mintz actually discusses and illuminates the economic and social history revolving around sugar consumption and production in Europe as well as its colonies, predominantly focusing on England. Mintz examines the structure of power, which made it probable for sugar to actually turn out to be the first luxury turned necessity that propelled a revolution within lifestyle and diet, principally within the working class in the upsurge of capitalism and Industrial Revolution. Mintz further argues that the contribution of sugar to several developed countries has been substantial, and that, as a result of the history of sugar in England plus the restructuring within the working class, individuals in United States and the United Kingdom have actually lost their autonomy towards food . From the novel we will realize that Mintz essentially attempts to bring together the disparate geographies basically from Northern Europe up to Caribbean. James Fenimore Cooper set the bar with the archetypal traits that define American literature, appearing from books like The Last of the Mohicans to current films like Indiana Jones s adventure Raiders of the Lost Ark. Three of the archetypal traits that appear in both timeless classics and current masterpieces are a brave faultless hero, daring rescues, and loyal companions. The first and most important part of almost any story is its hero. What makes the heroes in American Romantic literature so special is their bravery, skillfulness, and faultlessness. The main hero in The Last of the Mohicans, Natty Bumppo, is a brave and skilled Native American who makes wise decisions and never makes a mistake. He may be temporarily overcome by the enemy, but he always bounces back and takes what is his, through reasoning with a chieftain or through force against a military leader. Similarly, Indiana Jones is also brave and skilled with a whip, but he is less faultless. His fear of snakes deters him in some situations, but he always overcomes his fear to save the day. Expertise is affected by credentials and proven skill (Flanagin, Metzger, 4). The same person may be perceived as credible at one point in time, but may lack credibility later in time. Credibility is largely based on what we as a society are experiencing during that time period. Small things may affect credibility that we would not originally think to include. If a person were to see an ad every day about a certain lawyer, they might think of the lawyer if it comes a time for them to need a lawyer. But if someone were to hear about how wonderful a certain lawyer is from a friend or coworker, that person would be more likely to use that lawyer if the need arose. Techniques for Estimating Task Duration in Project Management TECHNIQUES FOR ESTIMATING TASK DURATIONS IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT As part of planning a project, tasks are assigned to project team members. Durations for task completion are also specified. Task duration estimation is necessary since it helps in cost and resource estimation. Iranmanesh and Mokhtari (2008), further affirmed the importance of project duration estimation by saying that, estimation of time and cost to complete work in a project and follow up them during implementation are major contributors to success or failure of a project, and hence very salient for the Project Manager.
