Our Iceberg Is Melting, By John Kotter
Once upon a time a colony of penguins was living in the frozen Antarctic on an
iceberg near what we call today Cape Washington. From the first sentence of John
Kotter s bestselling book, Our Iceberg Is Melting, it is difficult to tell that one is
about to read a great fable about how to manage change in business as well as
everyday life. ! The following summary will explain the key moments of the fable
and how they relate to our lives. First, let s introduce some of the more important
penguins the Leadership Council members. Louis, the head of the Leadership
Council, could perhaps be considered the CEO of the penguincolony. Alice is a smart,
aggressive member of the council, and is Fred s loyal confidant. Buddy is a young
penguin council member who may not be the brightest bulb in the box, but brings an
element of trust among the council members. Fred is the most curious of all of the
penguins; although he was an unknown penguin in the beginning, he ultimately
plays a very important role in the change process. Jordan, also known as the
Professor, was the brains of the council; he could perhaps be considered the
researcher of the group. Although the penguins start out simply as individuals, in the
end, they are a well working team capable of effectively managing change. Fred, a
quite curious penguin, studies the wonderful iceberg that the penguins consider
home. He comes across a problem which suggests that their beloved iceberg may be
in danger of
Bentham Vs Kant
This paper offers an analysis of Immanuel Kant and Jeremy Bentham in order to
argue that both of their moral theories are two different ethical principles.
Nevertheless, many of their reasonings are applied in moral debates and are relevant
in today s society. Both of these philosophers brought back moral philosophyand
provided different approaches on how an individual should follow moral principles.
In the first part of this essay, I will analysis Kant s moral philosophy, such as context
of right and wrong, the meaning of the text, and provide evidence that these
principles is applied in today s moral debate. Then, I will discuss Bentham s moral
philosophy using the same steps of analysis. The Fundamental Principles of the
Metaphysics of Morals by Immanuel Kant(1724 1804) believes in the reasonable and
free compliance of one s will to follow and abide by the moral law. This position
provides an ethical foundation for what is recognized as morality. For Kant, the moral
value of an act is not determined from its expected consequences, but from the
representation of law itself.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A simple way to define the difference is that hypothetical imperatives dictate if you
want this, then you ought to do this. The goals are based on self interest. On the other
hand, categorical imperatives are unconditional and mandate that we recognize there
is only one true imperative; always take the moral ground. According to Kant, moral
truths are not received from on high through divine revelation or inspiration. Rather,
they are based on reasons that make sense to all people who bother to think about
The Accidental Entrepreneur Essay
What happens when your paychecks stop? I am no longer employed. Perhaps this is
the time for me to pursue self employment! Starting a small business in this tough
economy won t be easy. But after experiencing workplace bullying, the most
devastating experience any employee can be subjected to, I am willing to consider
the risks. Bhide (1999) found in his research most startups derive from individuals
seeking self employment rather than the conduct of an entrepreneurial effort to
develop new products, markets, technologies, and so on (p. 19).

Your relationship continues as long as you owe the money, and once it is paid back,
your relationship with the lender ends. Debt financing can be short or long term.
This type of financing can be personal savings, family and friends, banks,
government guaranteed loans such as the Small Business Administration, and
offices of economic development. The advantages to debt financing include control
over the destiny of the business, own all the profit, and the interest on debt
financing is tax deductible. The disadvantages to debt financing are too much debt
can cause problems. If you begin to rely on it, and do not have the revenue to pay it

Equity financing is the type of financing in which there is an exchange of money

normally occurs with venture capitalists and angel investors. Venture capitalists are
mostly interested in companies that have a solid track record and are expected to

The reasons for these variations reside in determinants that relate to socio cultural
environments, physical environments, and the economic policies of the regions
(Dutton and McLaren 1460). Healthcare agencies and provincial health authorities
are working together to develop awareness programs about the dangers of
increased BMI in an effort to be proactive in the face of the rising tide of increased
BMIs. Health Consequences Social determinants of health impact the health status
of individuals (Mikkonen and Raphael 7). These determinants are related to the
conditions that impact the way in in which individuals live. For example,
employment, income that individuals earn, gender, housing situation, education,
job security, employment, health services, Aboriginal status, race and disability
(Mikkonen and Raphael i). These determinants are also regionally specific and
account for the variation in regional differences in obesity rates. As well, obesity is
not a blanket term; there are three classes of obesity in Canada. Individuals with a
BMI between 25 30 are considered overweight. BMIs 30 are divided in the three
classes: 30 34.9 is designated as Class I; BMIs between 35 39.9 is designated as
class II; and class III are individuals with BMIs measuring 40 (Brierley 156). These
classes determine treatment options from therapeutic lifestyle changes to treatment

Because Meijer s is supposedly a big store, I made some tips for you! The first store
is that Meijer s is not big, just busy. These tips are important so please highlight
and re read if necessary. First, all around the store, there are red and black phones.
The black is for employees, the red ones, are for YOU. Almost every store is different
depending on the location, for example in Ohio, or in Grand RapidsMichigan. So, if
you ask your greeter where a map is of the store you can see the different
departments, this is important because there are at least three red phones in each
department, as well as SOME price scan stations. Red phones help organize your
questions to the specific departments, for example if you wanta fishing license,...

Leave your carts, NOT YOUR PERSONALS, but your carts with the greeter. Take
the kids, or leave your amigo, electric cart, with the greeter, grab your walker and
then pee. Many vendors come in the store, to fill ice or stock bread, or even give
you free samples, they may be wearing uniforms, but, THEY DON T WORK FOR
MEIJER S. Refrain from asking where the butter is, but you can ask for recipes! If
you see a mess, don t ask them to clean it, use a red phone in your area or ask the
person in that department, this is important because we are a busy store. And we
wouldn t want to be taking care of a mess in grocery when we are supposed to be
organizing the flowers, right? Onto complaints, the best way to complain is to a
store director, a cashier, or to customer service. It is why we have it, among other
things, to be honest we all care about your complaints, but it is better from your
mouth than ours. Fast lanes, there are ALWAYS, ALWAYS, at most three
employees working the fast lanes. LOOK AROUND, if your machine is
malfunctioning, or you need then to check an ID, be patient and wait. Don t ask
someone passing by, or even the greeters, just wait, their coming. The final big two
tips, in general, are amigos and blue carts. Where do I start, treat Meijer s with
respect, please, don t push or leave carts AND amigos all over the place. If the
amigos are dead, ask an employee to call for help. DO NOT LEAVE CARTS IN OR

HUMAN BEINGS ROLE IN RELATION TO THE ENVIRONMENT
Introduction
The environment can be described as all those elements, both the living and the non
living that surrounds us. The environment can also refer to the condition within
which individuals, animals and plants lives. Mankind has a role to play in the
environment, which mainly concerns taking care of the environment as well as
improving it. Since, we as human beings are different from animals as we have a gift
consciousness, we have an obligation of being improvers of the environment through
ensuring that we observe environmental consciousness and that we avoid all those
practices that negatively affects the environment and cause ecological crisis and
problems. This essay will use the article Towards a Buddhist Environmental Ethics
by Rita M Gross to help in the answering of the question What is our appropriate
role in relation the environment? The essay will additionally look into the concept of
deep ecology by Bill Devall and George Sessions to get a deeper understanding of
the ecology and our relationship with it, a concept that will help us to be in a better
position to answer our appropriate role concerning the environment.
Human beings sometimes fail to understand the important role that the environment
plays in ensuring our survival and well being because they have little knowledge
about the environment, which makes them have less concern about it. The concept of
deep ecology, which refers to a more
The Battle Of Saratoga And Indian War
Boom! Boom! Boom! Do you hear that? That s what led to the revolution. Some
events that led to the revolution are: The French and Indian War, The Battle of
Saratoga and many other events. The American Revolution was between the
Americans led by George Washington , and the British led by General Howe and
General Cornwallis. The two enemies have been fighting for several of years.
There are series of wars that led to the revolution. These series if wars lasted for
several of years also. This is were the war begins. The Navigation Act was passed
between 1650 and 1696. It limited colonial trade by using the system of
merchantalism. It forbade colonist from trading specific items such as sugar and
cotton. The colonist reactions were different though. They would end up protesting
about the unfair taxes, and requirements they were expected to follow under the
act. England responded to these protest by saying it would benefit everyone
because there was was a steady market for these goods in England. Not all colonist
agreed. Some resorted to smuggling items in and out of the colonies because of the
way the British were treating them. Do you know what the French and Indian war
was over? The war was between the British and French over the fur trade. The trade
smacked the British and the colonist right in the face. Prime Minister, George
Grenville, asked parliament to pass higher taxes on the colonies to pay for the war
debt and protection. Colonist believed that

responsible for saving its species. The tortoises in Galapagos were almost in near
extinction and this because the very few males that are on the island did not seem an

a breeding center in Santa Cruz but is from a speciescalled Chelnoidis Hoodensis,
which is a species that that is only found in Espanola. Knowing the history of this

Judy Attfield Gender
I have chosen to discuss Judy Attfield s text, FORM/female FOLLOWS
FUNCTION/male: Feminist Critiques of Design because she talks to her audience
about her present and historical experience of what it is like to be a female
designer in what people consider to be a more masculine line of work. Attfield
allows her feminism to flourish in a distinctive style of writing which not only
engages the reader but also the problematic practice of being a female designer.
Attfield discusses the current situation of discrimination and inequality in the
design business that she has faced by telling the reader that she is providing the
normally silent with the power of speech. The designer s statement instinctively
intrigues the reader by alluding that the text is speaking for people that haven t had
their voices heard before as it is written by a female designer. Attfield s portrayal of
the women in her book, showing it in a fresh light due to the reader being able to tell
that what they are reading is a text by one of the silent who can speak passionately of
the discrimination received by women in the design industry. Throughout the text it
seems that the author has been objectified to the same prejudice due to her ... Show

Betrayal In The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe
In the novel, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, betrayal takes place in
many situations and it is almost always followed by forgiveness. Some of the
motives behind the betrayal in the novel include fear, spite, temptation, pride,
selfishness, and doing what is right. In C.S. Lewis s The Lion, The Witch, and The
Wardrobe, Lewis includes the recurring theme of betrayal and forgiveness. The first
examples of betrayal are by Mr.Tumnus. After he first plans to betray Lucy, he then
changes his mind and betrays the White Witch instead. When Lucy first enters
Narnia through the wardrobe, she runs into a Faun who introduces himself as
Mr.Tumnus. Upon finding out Lucy is a human, he befriends her and invites her to
his home where he secretly plans to betray her and take her to the White Witch, who
ordered all creatures of Narnia to report any sightings of humans. He later confesses
to Lucy his intentions when first meeting her, but says that he changed his mind

The Effect of Ph on a Food Preservative Essay
The Effect of pH on a Food Preservative
September 18, 2012
Objective:
To study the affect of pH on a food preservative.
Chemical Equation: C6H5COONa + HCL C6H5COOH + NaCl
Procedure:
This experiment was started with a clear solution of sodium benzoate and HCl was
added to it, ultimately producing benzoic acid. First, .3395 g of sodium benzoate was
weighed, then it was dissolved in water, causing it to disassociate into ions. Next,
3M of HCl were added drop wise to the solution until it reached a pH of 2, thus
introducing the hydronium ion. This addition caused a white, solid benzoic acid to
precipitate out of the solution. A vacuum filtration system was used to separate the
solid from the liquid. What was once ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once, the precipitate was ready to be placed in the oven there was not enough time
to allow for it to dry for 10 minutes. The precipitate was only in the oven for about 5
minutes, therefore, when weighed there was excess liquid in the precipitate. The final
weight of the precipitate was .45 g which was more than the amount that was started
with. From this end weight, it can be deduced that there was excess liquid in the end
result.
Post Lab: 1. The experiment began with a clear solution of sodium benzoate, once
3 M of HCl were added to achieve a pH of 2, the clear solution became a precipitate.
Sodium benzoate was water soluble, but the yield of benzoic acid became quite
insoluble in water.
3b. Although, a low amount of HCl was used, the waste can still cause health risks
and risks to the environment because it was not just one person doing the
experiment, therefore increasing the waste of HCl. Water was also used to wash the
vial to remove all solids that might be sticking to the side of the vial, therefore,
wasting water, which is not green.
4. If you start adding NaOH to the solution in small amounts, NaOH neutralizes
part of the HCl, (moles of HCl to moles of NaOH) so the pH begins to increase
slowly, this raises the soluability. This allows for the equivalent point to be reached:
moles of HCl = moles of NaOH. By continuing to add the NaOH, pH will
Information Security And The Security Essay
While information security has many benefits in our technologically advancing
environment, it also comes with its own set of issues. Three of the top issues in
keeping information secure are lack of awareness, complacency, and no root cause
analysis. Even more recently, we have experienced issues with information security
and allegations of election hacking.
Some of our biggest challenges come with keeping information secure in the business
world. Auburn University researchers teamed up with the International Information
Systems Security Certificate Consortium to identify and rank the top information and
security issues. Using a worldwide sample of 874 certified information system
security specialists, they ranked a list of top 25 information security issues based on
which ones were most critical facing organizations today. These 25 issues were: 1.)
Top management support 2.) User awareness training and education 3.) Malware 4.)
Patch management 5.) Vulnerability and risk management 6.) Policy related issues
7.) Organizational culture 8.) Access control and identity management 9.) Internal
threats 10.) Business continuity and disaster preparation 11.) Low funding and
inadequate budgets 12.) Protection of privileged information 13.) Network security
architecture 14.) Security training for IT staff 15.) Justifying security expenditures
16.) Inherent insecurity of networks and information systems 17.) Governance 18.)

Pursuit Of Nature In Frankenstein
A novel s setting contributes to the atmosphere of a story in a myriad of ways.
Setting provides insight of a character s point of view, the culture of a specific
time, and transports the reader to another world. In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein,
Shelley describes breathtaking scenes of nature in immense detail. Her descriptions
of the Alps and the destroyed tree relate to the pursuit of knowledge, power and the
idea of playing God , by providing places of contemplation and comparison for a
reader to ponder on these issues.
The symbol of the blasted oak tree is a recurring image. Before Frankenstein leaves
for university, Shelley introduces the great oak tree. This sets the stage for his
potential development. The largely self educated Frankenstein is only beginning his
pursuit of knowledge. During a storm, the oak tree is struck by lightning.
Frankenstein narrates, ...the oak had disappeared, and nothing remained but a blasted
stump...It was not splintered by shock, but entirely reduced to thin ribands of wood. I
never beheld anything so utterly destroyed (Shelley 34). The image of the destroyed
tree foreshadows what will become of Frankenstein s pursuit of knowledge.
Frankenstein comments on this premonition, Destiny was too potent, and her
immutable laws had decreed my utter and terrible destruction (Shelley 35). He does
not yet see himself as the tree, nonetheless, Shelley hints at his demise by describing
the blasted tree.
The words Shelley chooses to describe the

How Steinbeck creates sympathy in Of Mice and Men
Steinbeck creates sympathy in Of Mice and Men. Discuss in relation to one character
Of Mice and Men is a novella set on a ranch in the Northern western state of

surrounding or neighbouring urban areas. Similar concepts are greenways or green
wedges which have a linear character and may run through an urban area instead of
around it. In essence, a green belt is an invisible line encircling a certain area,
preventing development of the area allowing wildlife to return and be established.

Baculovirus Research Paper
Biopesticides Several microbes (viruses, bacteria and fungi) are being developed
as suitable biopestecides for management of insect and nematodal pests. Some
fungi have good potential of their use as bionematicides to control nema todal pests
of vegetables, fruit and cereal crops. Some bacterial and fungal products are also
use to control disease of roots and shoots of plants. Baculovirus family of insect
pathogens are reliable vehicles for carrying genes into insect cells. Recombinant
baculovirus vectors are being developed for geneexpression and protein production in
both insect cellcultures and living larvae. Therapeutic agents, vaccines, reagents, and
pesticides are some of the products that can be made by this unusual method (Knight,
1991). High production levels of biologically active products can be achieved in this
way. Under the control of strong baculovirus derived promoter sequence, productivity

Baculovirus normally contain gene called egt that blocks molting in the insect
host, giving it more time to eat. Deleting the egt gene from baculovirus

enhances baculovirus effectiveness. Splicing the genes that encode the paralytic
insect toxin produced by predatory mites into baculovirus can kill infected insect

larvae infected with this recombinant virus stop feeding 40 hours after the infection,
instead of the usual 96%. For crop pest, the same scorpion toxin has been added to
an AcNPV vector, decreasing the average time to kill Heliothis virescens larvae from

This paper will formulate a solution to the potential communication deficit. As Lois
Edmund wrote in his studies that conflict is not static; rather, it evolves over time
(Edmund, 2010) further recommendations will be suggested in this paper to address
the marketing, finance, accounting, legal and ethical issues, possible global impact
and the affected organizational polices over the next two five year period. Problem
Several factors combined like the general contractor undergoing several labor force
changes in past projects, the customer having little knowledge of the construction
process and the construction industry suffering from the lack of communication in
several projects (Mitkus, et al., 2014) state claim that a communication deficit exists.
The communication deficit can prompt conflict in several areas of the project and
have a tremendous negative impact on the overall success of the project. A qualitative
study by Mitkus Mitkus revealed that inefficient communication between the project
manager, project team, and customer had a negative impact on quality and customer
acceptance (Mitkus, et al., 2014). The study also revealed several root causes of the
communication deficit (Mitkus, et al., 2014): (a).No written plan (b).Communication
was not taken seriously (c).Lack of interpersonal communication (face to face)
(d).Stakeholders not clearly identified (e).Unestablished communication channels (f).

The Inevitability Of Organisational Accidents
Introduction:
The aim of this essay is to determine the inevitability of organisational accidents. An
organisational accident is defined as an undesired or potentially disastrous event that
is caused by the decisions and actions of the company. This essay will argue that
organisational accidents cannot be avoided. As a first step, this essay will detail
Perrow s Normal Accident Theory in which he asserts that the implementation of
complex systems by organisations / companies has resulted in unpreventable
organisational accidents. The 2011 Fukasmi nuclear accident will be explained to
support this assertion. As a second step, human error by those in the organisation as a
factor which causes accidents will be analysed through Reason s ... Show more

As a ramification, it is difficult for human operators to anticipate faults within the
system and prevent and manage the risks incurred by an operational accident
accordingly, making them incomprehensible . Therefore, organisational accidents in
complex systems are inevitable as despite defensive measures implemented to
mitigate their risk, such as the training of operators and regular maintenance, the
fragile design of the systems is the core reason why accidents occur.
A notable example of an inevitable accident occurring in a complex system is the
Fukasma dhi nuclear accident. On the 11th March 2011 a 9.0 magnitude earthquake,
named the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred off the coast of Japan. The
earthquake caused two tsunamis, which disabled the power supply and cooling of
three Fukushima Daiichi reactors . Within three days, the three main cores melted
due to the disabling. Large amounts of radioactive material was released into the
atmosphere. According to Perrow, the nuclear accident is classified as a normal
accident, because the earthquake was the catalyst of the unforeseen cascading failure
within the nuclear power plant s complex system.
Human Error
Human error is a primary factor that makes organisational accidents unavoidable.
Human error is defined as a human decision or action in which
Different Directors Perspectives in King Lear Essay
All texts can be read and understood, interpreted and represented in many different
ways according to the views of the responder and their context. Many different
interpretations of King Lear have been made, each valuing and highlighting different
aspects and themes of the play. It is necessary for these interpretations to be made
and adapted in order for King Learto have relevance within the context of the society.
Each interpretation of the text extracts and concentrates on certain ideas, issues,
themes, values of the play, altering the way the play is received amongst audiences
and critics.

The changeable use of voice by the actor in this production was used to show his
volatile character. Critics of this early play comment on the straight faced that Lear
conveys while asking the question which one of you, shall we say, doth love us
most? The replies from Gonerill and Regan are given an absurdist notion by the
bizarre over reactions. Their realistic language is contrasted to their two faced body
language.
The plot of the play, from confusion to order was designed in similarity with the set.
The stage gradually worn out until during the last scene it spears as an earthquake
had struck. Lear s costume also deteriorated at the same time with his character. He
began the play in rich robe that distinguishes him as King however later his costume
changed to leather and boots and by the last scene he was dressed in rags. This
erosion of appearance conveys quick emotional, mental break down. Also Lear s
frustrated and dissatisfied facial expression made this more suggestive to the
audiences own explanation.
The storm scene in King Lear is one of the most involving scenes the play. During
this scene Shakespeare gives the storm as a personality and it echoes Lear s inner
confusion. It allows Lear to grow a sense of human weakness and humbleness. Brook
s interpretation of the storm scene remains consistent with his simple Shakespearean
techniques. Wobble boards and symbols are used for thunder and

A big proponent of ESL learning, what my case study consists of, can be compared to
David Kolb s framework of experiential learning. Kolb s experiential learning cycle
features four stages: the concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract

involves doing or having an experience. The second stage, reflective observation,
involves reviewing or reflecting on the experience. The third stage, abstract
conceptualisation, involves concluding or learning from the experience. The fourth
stage, active experimentation, involves planning or trying out what you learned.

A Marxist reading enables the critic to see Catch 22, by Joseph Heller, as not simply

such a capitalist mode of production generates a materialistic view of the world, in

An Analysis of Moulin Rouge
Moulin Rouge(2001) is an Oscar winning master piece from director Baz
Luhrmann. It followed the success and recognition of Romeo + Juliet (1996) and
Strictly Ballroom (1992). All three films were recognized for Luhrmann s
characteristic style. His films feature stylistic choices such as blue and red lighting,
the use of rapid cuts and vibrant, period accurate costume. To analyze Luhrmann s
use of the four elements of the stylistic system, I will consider two specific scenes
from the film, namely El Tango De Roxanne and the first meeting between the Duke,
Christian and Satine. Although they both feature singing and dancing, the mood
evoked by each contrasts completely.
Every film uses the stylistic system to structure a narrative that ... Show more content

To follow the dialogue, Luhrmann crosses the axis of action. Bordwell and
Thompson define the axis of action as; the imaginary line that passes from side to
side through the main actors, defining all the spatial relations of all the elements of
the scene as being to the right or left. The camera is not supposed to cross the axis
at a cut and thus reverse those spatial relations. (2008, pg 477). Luhrmann manages
to cross the axis of action by moving his camera around the outside of the group of
characters. This way, the audiencedoesn t get disorientated by a constant changing of
character positions but also enables them to see all the characters in relation to one
another and their reactions to the dialogue.
When the music begins and the characters are doing choreographed dance steps, the
takes become longer and the shot scale is long to medium. This is done specifically
so that the audience can take in all the action and spectacle in each shot. Luhrmann
also makes use of quick camera movements; such as the whip pan (quick rotation on
the horizontal axis) when moving from character to character during the song which
once again enforces how busy the scene is.
The entire scene takes place in the elephant outside the Moulin Rouge which is
Satine s private boudoir and the place that she entertains all her male guests. The

The Opera Of Turandot By Giacomo Puccini
Opera Paper Turandot Turandot is a dramatic opera that was performed in the
Metropolitan Opera in 2009. Turandot was written by Giacomo Puccini. This
rendition of Turandot was produced by Franco Zeffirelli, and directed by Andris
Nelsons. In this beautiful performance of Turandot, we see Maria Guleghina as
Princess Turandot, Mariana Poplavskaya as Lui and Calaf as play by Marcello
Giodani. With all of these talented actors and show personnel, this production
remains one of the best known film adaptations of Turandot. The composer of
Turandot is Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini, who
was born on December 28, 1858 in the small town of Lucca Italy. Puccini came
from 5 generations of musicians and began writing operas at the age of 21. His
realistic verismo style, which means truth or reality in Italian, allowed him to
identify with his characters in a realistic way and his operas reflect real life
situations. Puccini liked to write operas with heroines rather than heroes. His
operas almost always include a death for the sake of love. Despite his operatic
genius, Puccini only wrote ten operas in his lifetime. He died on November 22,
1924 at the age of 66. At the time of his death, he was only one act short of
completing Turandot. His close friend and fellow composer, Arturo Toscanini
,
finished Turandot shortly after his death. Puccini has been referred to by many critics
as the greatest composer of Italian operaafter Verdi (Brittanica.com).
Nuremberg Research Paper
PROBLEM DEFINTION IN THE URBAN CONTEXT Nuremberg, Germany is a
city that is well known throughout the records of history. Post World War II,
Nuremberg was the center for justice to trial various Nazi and German officials
from their heinous war crimes. After the Nuremberg trials, Nuremberg began to
urbanize like the rest of Germany recovering from World War II by redeveloping
neighborhoods and streets. Most of the streets were designed to be small and
inaccessible by more than a few cars at a time. As the German population increased
and more Germans moved to the cityof Nuremberg, the amount of cars populating the
city also began to rise. With the increasing amount of cars came the abundance of

Within the first two months after the removal of cars, there air quality in the
surrounding areas actually deteriorated because of the changing of weather
(Pluske) However, after one year of the car removal, air pollution within the road
closure significantly decreased and Nuremberg had a decrease of Nitrous Oxide
by over 30% because of the elimination of cars. This can be directly seen in the
figure below. The figure describes the change of spatial air structure of NO2 from
the 1980s to the late 1990 s where the upwind pushes the air out of the city and
then circulates back to the city. From the years of 1981 1985 which was before the

pollution reached a peak percentage in the middle of the city, however, after the
removal of cars it can be seen that there is a downward trend of nitrious oxide within

Comparison Between Hard Times and Communist
Manifesto
Throughout history, a divide has always existed between the rich and poor in
society. However, during the Industrial Revolution in Victorian England, this rift
reached its peak. The working class labored for long hours and received miniscule
wages, whereas the bourgeoisie grew abundantly wealthy through the labor of the
working class. Published in 1848 and 1854 respectively, Karl Marxs The Communist
Manifesto and Charles Dickens Hard Times both comment on these troubles. While
Hard Times is a novel which tells a story and The Communist Manifesto is a short
publication which tries to bring about social change, both writings offer a sharp
critique of the class antagonism brought about by capitalism at the height of the

Furthermore, like many members of the bourgeoisie, Bounderby tries to better
himself at the expense of the proletarians. While Bounderby was a member of the
lower class in his youth, he has completely turned his back on them. He treats the
proletarians with contempt, and he believes that all the proletarians desire to be
fed on turtle soup and venison, with a gold spoon. Dickens is creating an irony
here. Bounderby believes that all the proletarians want to get rich without
working, yet the proletarians are actually doing all the excruciating work in the
society. However, the wealth is not going to the proletarians but to Bounderby
himself. In contrast, the protagonist of the novel is Stephen Blackpool, who
represents the average proletarian. He is not very educated, he works long hours at
a difficult factory job, and he gets paid very little for this job. Blackpool is a tragic
character who is constantly being taken advantage of by members of higher
classes. Bounderby takes advantage of Blackpool through wage labor, and Tom
Gradgrind takes advantage of him by framing him for the bank robbery. This all
leads to a life full of sufferings, including exile from Coketown and an untimely
death. Blackpool would be a perfect model for Marx in order to showcase the
sufferings of the proletarians in Victorian England. Bounderby had complete control
over Blackpool. Bounderby could decide
Franz Joseph Haydn s Symphony No. 94 Symphony
When listening to Classical music I think of rich, precise, high quality, and pristine
music that either gives you relaxing feeling or gives you that want to dance feeling.
One of my favorite composers of this era was Franz Joseph Haydn and he
incorporated both of these feelings in his arrangements.
Franz Joseph Haydn was born in 1732 in Austria. He struggled early in life and
worked as a freelance musician. He began his career singing soprano at Saint
Stephen s Cathedral and later started giving keyboard lessons, playing in street
bands, and singing or playing violin and organ at three different churches every
Sunday (Wright, C. M., 2014, p.159, para. 2). In 1779, Haydn signed a contract with

94 Surprise Symphony. The genre of this musical composition is a symphony and it
consists of a three movement minuet and trio. The piece has a stately dance feel to it
with a very solid rhythm, nice melody, and a rich full sound. It is written in ternary
form and the entire minuet trio minuet forms an ABA arrangement (Wright, C.M.,
2014, p. 166). The divisions between sections of the piece are well indicated and
recognized by a change of theme, instrumentation, and volume. I really liked the way
the timpani helped accentuate the beat and help give the piece a driving tempo at
times. The woodwinds and strings also flowed well together as if telling a story.
Some of the things that stuck out to me and make this an enjoyable symphony were
the rich full sound of the orchestra instruments along with the bouncy rhythm and
tempo. While listening to the arrangement I could hardly sit still, the music just made
me want to move with it. It gave me the mental image of a large stately ballroom
with numerous dancers dancing about. I also liked the way different sections of the
arrangement were easily recognized by a change in volume and
Freudian Literary Analysis Of Doubt By John Patrick
Shanley
Freudian(Psychoanalytical) Literary Analysis of Doubt
Doubt by John Patrick Shanley is about a nun who is entirely convinced that a priest
had done something inappropriate to one of the students and taken advantage of the
fact that the student (Donald Muller) is an African American. Sister Aloysius
Beauvier, the nun, concluded that Father Flynn, the priest, had been forcing Donald
Muller to drink wine and molesting him. With the help of a naive nun named Sister
James, Sister Aloysius attempted to investigate her assumption of Father Flynn s
actions even if it meant contacting Donald s mother. Sister Aloysius is a stereotypical
splenetic Catholic School nun who believes that being an unsympathetic and
oppressive person to the students is the most effective method in order to make the
students oblige to her commands. The literary theory chosen for this literature work
is the Freudian literary theory. Freudian literary theory is based on the works of
Sigmund Freud and workings of the mind and instinct as well as sexuality. The play
Doubt and Freudian literary theory can be related because Freud s work reveals
the id, ego and superego and how it affects a person. Id is a natural instinct. Ego
ensures that the impulses of the id is expressed in an acceptable behavior. Superego
provides guidelines and morals for making judgments. (Brizee) Sister Aloysius id
desires to get rid of Father Flynn immediately. Her superego is diminished since she
lied to Father Flynn. Her ego is shown

It was predicted that given three different antacids, milk of magnesia, mylanta, and

HCl. When milk of magnesia was dropped into the HCl solution, it took an average
of 25 drops to neutralize the HCl from three different trials. When mylanta was

hypothesized that milk of magnesia would take the fewest number of drops to

of experimental errors could have been that the antacid and HCl weren t completely

experimental errors could be improved by tapping and swirling the test tube tilted to

How A Buyer Has Numerous Benefit Options For The

A buyer has numerous benefit options to choose from. The following are the
suggested options:

Under this benefit design, patients are signified to a COE for evaluation and

the provider is paid a bundled payment. If an individual does not qualify for the

These approaches give the patient a broad choice of providers and some financial
incentive in the form of lower cost sharing to seek care from a provider participating
in the bundled payment program. However, to create enough steerage to these
providers, the incentives will have to be significant; providers may think twice about
participating in bundled payment if patients still have a broad choice of providers.
Purchasers are likely to be more successful at getting providers to accept bundled
payment if providers can expect greater patient volume when they do. To achieve
maximum savings and better patient outcomes by driving volume to high value
providers, CPR recommends benefit design approaches that create incentives for
enrollees to seek care from them. Options 1 and 2 above are examples of benefit
designs that are more likely to yield higher results than those strategies that offer
modest benefit design differentials between a bundled payment provider and a non
bundled payment provider. In the end, determining your benefit design strategy
comes first; designing and developing the network will follow.
Employee education and benefit designs that either encourage or require the use of
treatment decision support (TDS) tools can help consumers feel better about their
treatment decisions and prepare them for more aggressive benefit strategies that steer

The Effects Of Alcohol On The Drinking Culture Of
America
Throughout the eighteen hundreds saloons were the site of rockus drinking, profane
drunkards, and unthinking violence. This drinking culture was defined by
masculinity and by free flowing alcohol that permeated all throughout America, city
to city. The saloons became so popular with working men because it was time they
could spend away from their wives and their homes. In Catherine Murdock s book
Domesticating Drink she argues that these elements of saloon culture, exclusivity,
inebriety, and violence, were eliminated by the increase in popularity of mixed sex
speakeasies, cocktail parties, and the overall domestication of drink. But this
conclusion misinterprets the history of alcohol from Prohibition to the present.
Although alcohol is now consumed without the exclusively of the past, it has evolved
to be over sexualized and associated with a masculine culture of binge drinkingover
sexualized and domestic violence. The domestication of drink did allow women to
integrate into the drinking cultureof America and allowed women to join the drinking
population if they choose to drink. Murdock was correct in saying that the exclusivity
of the all male saloon culture crumbled in the nineteen teens and onwards into the
twenties, thirties, and forties. One of the most important transitions was that alcohol
became far more prevalent in the household setting (165). The rise of cocktail parties
gave women an opportunity to drink that was softened feminized enough to remove

Hull House In The Late 1800 s
According to the law, civil rights are something that everyone is given. However,
history has shown that this is not always the case. In the late 1800 s blacks were
segregated from whites, and forced to obey different laws. There were not many
places where people from any place, of any race could learn together or interact. Hull
House was one place where all people of any religion, race, or country came together
and changed the course of history.
Hull House was not the first of its kind, but it may have been the first of its kind in
America. It was founded by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr in 1889. Addams and
Starr hoped that Hull House would bring some light into these people s lives.

For example, Hull House acted as a base for many unions fighting for women s
suffrage and child labor. Jane Addams (one of the founders) was an activist and
lead a fight against sweatshops. Moreover, she was very passionate with her
protest and many factory owners did not agree. Specifically, one representative
from a manufacturers association tried to bribe her with $50,000 to stop her efforts
against sweatshops, but Addams refused (Scholastic.com). Despite all the
obstacles, her attempts were successful when in 1893 Illinois passed a bill that
banned children under 14 years old to work in workshops or factories. Another main
success of the Hull House organization was their work in forming the first Juvenile
Court of Chicago in 1899. Evidently, this was a pressing issue because many young
immigrant children were thrown in jail with adult criminals for petty crimes like
stealing coal, fruit, or vegetables to help support their families. The Hull House
organization even provided the first probation officers for the

Though painstaking at times, the joyous satisfaction that is attained when each of
these challenges are met with innovative solutions has no words to explain and has
thus been the prime reason for me to take up my undergraduation in Chemical

completely changed: I moved from Poland to the United States. It was definitely one
of the greatest challenges during high school. New surroundings, lack of friends to
confide in and language barrier were some of the biggest problems. It was not easy
to adjust at first, but I pushed myself to get better grades and acclimate to this new
way of living. I am proud of the fact that I did not qualify to take ESL since my
level of English was already high. Unfortunately, my freshman year grades are
transferred from Poland, where the school system is different and it is
exceptionally difficult to get As. Also, my sophomore year was my first year in
the US, and I did not do as good in school and I would want to, because of the
factors I have mentioned above. I know that solitude will not be a problem at

Compare And Contrast The Gettysburg Address And The
Second...
Two very influential speeches, The Gettysburg Address and The Second Inaugural
Address were both spoken by Abraham Lincoln. The time period of the speeches is
quite interesting, the first taking place before The Civil War and the second one,
after The Civil War. His word choice is elaborate and precis, which makes it quite
easy to analysis what he is trying to put forward in his speeches. Although some
may argue that Lincoln had other ideas in mind, it is quite evident that his vision of
America was heavily based around equality of all people. His underlined intentions,
the information he puts forward, and his words about religion are all strong
examples of his views on the situation of equality in America. This can be further
explained by analyzing the two speeches in question. Before anything else, it is very
important to analyze the intentions behind his speeches. This will give insight into
what exactly Lincoln s vision of America was and how he strives to obtain that. The
Gettysburg Address speaks mostly of equality of all men and what that means during
The Civil War. On the other hand, The Second Inaugural Address addresses his
thoughts after America has been through over four years of fighting in The Civil
War. These thoughts include the conflicting views about war on either side and the
mention of slavery as well. With all this being said, both speeches seem to hold the
same intention. Lincoln mentions slavery and equality in both excerpts and his
thought seem not
Honolulu Harbor Medical Clinic Executive Summary
A significant volunteer experience that augmented my leadership skills and
expanded my understanding of medicine was at the Honolulu Harbor Medical Clinic
sponsored by the Seafarer s Ministry. The Seafarer s Ministry provides spiritual,
emotional, and social support for the undocumented foreign fishermen docked at
Honolulu Harbor. The clinic began with few volunteers and two doctors who
provided medical care to undocumented foreign fishermen from a box of supplies out
of a truck. This expanded my capacity to understanding, to humbly accept
circumstances and encouraged me to practice medicinewith culturally sensitivity.
As a volunteer, I scribed, organized the stock medications, and mentored incoming
volunteers on the clinic processes. With

Aylmer s Struggle for Perfection in Nathaniel Hawthome s, The Birthmark
Aylmer s struggle for scientific perfection transcends human possibility in Nathaniel
Hawthome s The Birthmark. He attempts to perfect that which nature rendered
imperfect. When the quest for human achievement opposes divine design it has no
chance of succeeding. This key element in Aylmer s twisted love leads to the demise
of what he seeks so desperately to perfect, his beautiful wife. Georgianna s fatal flaw
of humanity (Hawthorne 167), the birthmark, blocks her from perfection in his eyes,
and thus blemishes Aylmer s prideful ideals. Her alleged inferiorityto science leads to
her death and Aylmer s complete failure as both a scientist and a spouse. ... Show

in what Aylmer deemed an almost fearful distinctness (166). Aylmer s fearful
distinction shows how utterly engrossing and preoccupying his feelings of hatred for
the mark had become. Many admire the mark as a distinction of Georgianna s innate
beauty and uniqueness. Some, however, deem it the very mark that completely
obliterates all semblance of her beauty by claiming that the birthmark quite destroyed
the effect of Georgianna s beauty (166). Aylmer represents the latter group. Most,
however, if they did not adore it ... contented themselves with wishing it away so that
the world might possess one living specimen of ideal loveliness without the
semblance of a flaw (166). Aylmer proceeds much farther than this by completely
eradicating the birthmark and killing his wife.
The conflict between Aylmer s love of science and love for Georgianna leads to her
tragic death. The birthmark continually taints his ideal love of woman. As far as
Aylmer is concerned, the only thing that keeps Georgianna from perfection is the
birthmark; ... seeing her otherwise so perfect, he found this one defect grow more
and more intolerable... (167). This man, intrinsically scientific, would not deem it
necessary to attempt perfection if he did not possess a love for and deep attachment
to science: ... had Aylmer not been a scientist, a daring experimenter, the birthmark
on his wife s cheek would hardly have come to obsess him (Brooks and

When creating a training program for an organization, ensuring the well being of
the employees are considered so they are able to deliver the most valuable
outcomes with their jobs by being successful and perform at a high level of

supervisors or management. Along with the advancements, this is also a platform
for less absences or turnovers and a better reputation in the work field to attract
better inquiries from potential employees. (Treven, 2015) Cultural diversity
management programs aim to bring awareness and skill based training. The purpose
of this training is to show the diverse groups within an organization which can
improve the productivity between employees. This training will also help
management understand and value each one of their employees and differences
they may have. Cultural diversity training is designed to show how diversity, we all

underlining issues. (Treven, 2015) Diversity may be a source of problem solving

Film Analysis Of Blade Runner
EDITED VERSION
Blade Runner
Ridley Scott directed Blade Runner (1982) after his latest hit Alien (1979) This is
the start of major fame and recognition in his career and he is still cementing his
unique vision onto the industry. The Film is located in a dark futuristic city yet
vibrant with neon lights and crowds of people but this world has lots of backstory
with off world colonies and advanced technology. The film is loosely based on a
novel called Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968) By Philip K. Dick both
having the same plot and sharing the same world. Blade Runner has a dark futuristic
city vibe yet vibrant with neon lights and crowds of people. The way Scott makes
us move through the city in a bird s eye view at odd angles when moving to a new
location draws a sense of awe seeing these massive structures and this endless
sprawling city in its midst. Camera work is used to make you feel claustrophobic in
this packed tight city. The set was almost entirely filmed indoors making this movie
very dark, with an ambient controlled environment.
The creative process that went into this movie is astounding! Huge model pieces
were put to together to show off the megastructures in 2019 Los Angeles. Almost
every set piece serves a purpose in convincing this forced reality upon you. It s one
thing to see the world of Blade Runner and another to hear the great work of music
the film has. An exquisite masterpiece, composer Vangelis has crafted. Blending very

Vera Wang Advertising Analysis
Vera Wang is one of the most iconic designers in fashion today and this ad takes
advantage of her recognition. This image, most likely from a fashion magazine,
promotes Vera Wang s dress line. The advertisement uses three significant contrasts to
draw the buyer in. First, the model in the actual dress line. Second, the flourishing
background the models are put in. It makes you think about what the photographer
was trying to portray. Lastly, the display case made the models are standing in and
around. The modelin the front draws in the buyer, but the case is see through,
allowing the viewer to see the model standing on the back side and part of the
models arm to the left. The image suggests that someone who wears Vera Wang
can
have multiple styles and still feel good in whatever type of style that is.
The greenery background gives the ad an interesting contrast. This is a nature
setting, as implied by the grass and plants. Most of this background is not very
visible, as the models take up most of the advertisement. The brightness of the
plants suggest this photo was taken midday when the sun was at its peak. It was
taken with a shallow depth of field, meaning the background is blurred and the
main focus is on the objects in the front of the photo, The greenery is not very
green, but fades into the background. There are no animals in the trees in the back,
maybe suggesting this was taken in a place without a lot of wildlife, or the fact that
there s no resources for these
The Deepwater Horizon Is An Oil Drilling Rig
The Deepwater Horizon is an oil drilling rig that was built in South Korea by
Hyundai Heavy Industries in 2001. The rig was a massive mobile drill as it was
measured to be 396 by 256 feet (Report). Additionally, it was considered to be an
exploratory rig, not an actual excavator rig. The rig was commissioned to Transocean
which later leased it to British Petroleum, an oil and gas company. The oil rig was
once well known as it set the world record for the deepest oil and gas well ... 35,055
feet (http://www.nola.com/news/gulf oil spill/index.ssf/2010/04
/deepwater_horizon_rig_had_hist.html). However, in a more recent event, it is well
known for the worst man made environmental disaster in United States history. The
disaster would occur 50 miles from Louisiana, at the Macondo well. The well was
leased to BP in 2008 and drilling operation began in 2009. It had a crew of 146
people. The intention of drill the Macondo well was to create a route between the
gas and oil supply that was under the sea floor.
The disaster occurred on April 20, 2010, when the mobile drill unit, Deepwater
Horizon was beginning final preparations to end drilling operations in the
Macondo well. The plan was to seal the well and extract hydrocarbons at a later
time and move on to a new drilling site. This, however, would not be the case as the
rig experienced an explosion on board the drill. At around 10:00 p.m., the rig
unexpectedly began to shake and a loud surging noise was accompanied by natural
gas,
The M M Campaign Essay
Brand campaigns is generally regarded as application of specific activities created
to promote a product. Companies typically employ it when they want to increase
their sales. Use of one or an integrated media techniques may come into effects, for
instance, use of television, print and social media. The point is to capture the target
audience s attention as well as generate response from them. This is exactly what M
M managed to do with its Better with M campaign where they used unique
advertising and marketingapproaches that had emotional and psychological effect on
the target market. The M M campaign use of personification and personalization was
a brilliant move that cemented the company as leaders in candy and chocolate
manufacturing. Several slogans and ads run through people s TV screen during the
whole campaign period, and the fascinating aspect is that the were really engaging
and funny. The campaign featured super bowl commercial, digital ads, in store
displays, and perhaps the most critical cause related marketing.
This is analysis of the Better with M campaign. This paper explores how M M
devised and implemented successful advertising campaign through message strategy,
persuasive focus, persuasive appeal and correct execution. This will be done by
reviewing literature on marketing and advertising concepts. I will also look at the
cost used to implement this strategy and whether it was channelled in the right way.
Finally, the paper will examine the outcome of

Then, I will discuss Bentham s moral philosophy using the same steps of analysis. The Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Morals by Immanuel Kant(1724 1804) believes in the reasonable and free compliance of one s will to follow and abide by the moral law. This position provides an ethical foundation for what is recognized as morality. HUMAN BEINGS ROLE IN RELATION TO THE ENVIRONMENT Introduction The environment can be described as all those elements, both the living and the non living that surrounds us. The environment can also refer to the condition within which individuals, animals and plants lives. Mankind has a role to play in the environment, which mainly concerns taking care of the environment as well as improving it. Since, we as human beings are different from animals as we have a gift consciousness, we have an obligation of being improvers of the environment through ensuring that we observe environmental consciousness and that we avoid all those practices that negatively affects the environment and cause ecological crisis and problems. This essay will use the article Towards a Buddhist Environmental Ethics by Rita M Gross to help in the answering of the question What is our appropriate role in relation the environment? The essay will additionally look into the concept of deep ecology by Bill Devall and George Sessions to get a deeper understanding of the ecology and our relationship with it, a concept that will help us to be in a better position to answer our appropriate role concerning the environment. Human beings sometimes fail to understand the important role that the environment plays in ensuring our survival and well being because they have little knowledge about the environment, which makes them have less concern about it. The concept of deep ecology, which refers to a more

Judy Attfield Gender I have chosen to discuss Judy Attfield s text, FORM/female FOLLOWS FUNCTION/male: Feminist Critiques of Design because she talks to her audience about her present and historical experience of what it is like to be a female designer in what people consider to be a more masculine line of work. Attfield allows her feminism to flourish in a distinctive style of writing which not only engages the reader but also the problematic practice of being a female designer. Chemical Equation: C6H5COONa + HCL C6H5COOH + NaCl Procedure: This experiment was started with a clear solution of sodium benzoate and HCl was added to it, ultimately producing benzoic acid. First, .3395 g of sodium benzoate was weighed, then it was dissolved in water, causing it to disassociate into ions. Next, 3M of HCl were added drop wise to the solution until it reached a pH of 2, thus introducing the hydronium ion. This addition caused a white, solid benzoic acid to precipitate out of the solution. A vacuum filtration system was used to separate the solid from the liquid. What was once ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once, the precipitate was ready to be placed in the oven there was not enough time to allow for it to dry for 10 minutes. The precipitate was only in the oven for about 5 minutes, therefore, when weighed there was excess liquid in the precipitate. The final weight of the precipitate was .45 g which was more than the amount that was started with. From this end weight, it can be deduced that there was excess liquid in the end result. Post Lab: 1. The experiment began with a clear solution of sodium benzoate, once 3 M of HCl were added to achieve a pH of 2, the clear solution became a precipitate. Sodium benzoate was water soluble, but the yield of benzoic acid became quite insoluble in water. 3b. Although, a low amount of HCl was used, the waste can still cause health risks and risks to the environment because it was not just one person doing the experiment, therefore increasing the waste of HCl. Water was also used to wash the vial to remove all solids that might be sticking to the side of the vial, therefore, wasting water, which is not green. 4. If you start adding NaOH to the solution in small amounts, NaOH neutralizes part of the HCl, (moles of HCl to moles of NaOH) so the pH begins to increase slowly, this raises the soluability. This allows for the equivalent point to be reached: moles of HCl = moles of NaOH. By continuing to add the NaOH, pH will

Setting provides insight of a character s point of view, the culture of a specific time, and transports the reader to another world. In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, Shelley describes breathtaking scenes of nature in immense detail. Her descriptions of the Alps and the destroyed tree relate to the pursuit of knowledge, power and the idea of playing God , by providing places of contemplation and comparison for a reader to ponder on these issues. The symbol of the blasted oak tree is a recurring image. Before Frankenstein leaves for university, Shelley introduces the great oak tree. This sets the stage for his potential development. The largely self educated Frankenstein is only beginning his pursuit of knowledge. During a storm, the oak tree is struck by lightning. Frankenstein narrates, ...the oak had disappeared, and nothing remained but a blasted stump...It was not splintered by shock, but entirely reduced to thin ribands of wood. I never beheld anything so utterly destroyed (Shelley 34). The image of the destroyed tree foreshadows what will become of Frankenstein s pursuit of knowledge. He does not yet see himself as the tree, nonetheless, Shelley hints at his demise by describing the blasted tree. The words Shelley chooses to describe the

As a first step, this essay will detail Perrow s Normal Accident Theory in which he asserts that the implementation of complex systems by organisations / companies has resulted in unpreventable organisational accidents. As a ramification, it is difficult for human operators to anticipate faults within the system and prevent and manage the risks incurred by an operational accident accordingly, making them incomprehensible . Therefore, organisational accidents in complex systems are inevitable as despite defensive measures implemented to mitigate their risk, such as the training of operators and regular maintenance, the fragile design of the systems is the core reason why accidents occur. A notable example of an inevitable accident occurring in a complex system is the Fukasma dhi nuclear accident. On the 11th March 2011 a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, named the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred off the coast of Japan. The earthquake caused two tsunamis, which disabled the power supply and cooling of three Fukushima Daiichi reactors . Within three days, the three main cores melted due to the disabling. Large amounts of radioactive material was released into the atmosphere. According to Perrow, the nuclear accident is classified as a normal accident, because the earthquake was the catalyst of the unforeseen cascading failure within the nuclear power plant s complex system. Human Error Human error is a primary factor that makes organisational accidents unavoidable. Human error is defined as a human decision or action in which

Such an allusion to a vulgar object demonstrates the impersonality and callous inhumanity of war, where courage, bravery and humans themselves account for little. Yossarian here is illustrated as a mere production unit, a worker . Marxist critics argue that capitalism, which dominates US politics, turns peoples into things, it reifies them. In Marxist terms, such a capitalist mode of production generates a materialistic view of the world, in which ultimately all of us function as objects and become alienated from ourselves. Yossarian cannot go home because his superiors require him for their own personal gain, and it makes no difference what justification they might give for making him stay. The rest of Yossarian s squadron has a false consciousness ; they are accepting of the overbearing military system, ironically calling Yossarian, crazy . They re trying to kill me, Yossarian told him calmly. Clevinger answered. They re trying to kill everyone . And what difference does that
  • 28. An Analysis of Moulin Rouge Moulin Rouge(2001) is an Oscar winning master piece from director Baz Luhrmann. It followed the success and recognition of Romeo + Juliet (1996) and Strictly Ballroom (1992). All three films were recognized for Luhrmann s characteristic style. His films feature stylistic choices such as blue and red lighting, the use of rapid cuts and vibrant, period accurate costume. To analyze Luhrmann s use of the four elements of the stylistic system, I will consider two specific scenes from the film, namely El Tango De Roxanne and the first meeting between the Duke, Christian and Satine. Although they both feature singing and dancing, the mood evoked by each contrasts completely. Every film uses the stylistic system to structure a narrative that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To follow the dialogue, Luhrmann crosses the axis of action. Bordwell and Thompson define the axis of action as; the imaginary line that passes from side to side through the main actors, defining all the spatial relations of all the elements of the scene as being to the right or left. The camera is not supposed to cross the axis at a cut and thus reverse those spatial relations. (2008, pg 477). Luhrmann manages to cross the axis of action by moving his camera around the outside of the group of characters. This way, the audiencedoesn t get disorientated by a constant changing of character positions but also enables them to see all the characters in relation to one another and their reactions to the dialogue. When the music begins and the characters are doing choreographed dance steps, the takes become longer and the shot scale is long to medium. This is done specifically so that the audience can take in all the action and spectacle in each shot. Luhrmann also makes use of quick camera movements; such as the whip pan (quick rotation on the horizontal axis) when moving from character to character during the song which once again enforces how busy the scene is. The entire scene takes place in the elephant outside the Moulin Rouge which is Satine s private boudoir and the place that she entertains all her male guests. The dГ©cor inside is very oriental and opulent; the predominant colours are red and gold with rich

  • 30. The Opera Of Turandot By Giacomo Puccini Opera Paper Turandot Turandot is a dramatic opera that was performed in the Metropolitan Opera in 2009. Turandot was written by Giacomo Puccini. This rendition of Turandot was produced by Franco Zeffirelli, and directed by Andris Nelsons. In this beautiful performance of Turandot, we see Maria Guleghina as Princess Turandot, Mariana Poplavskaya as Lui and Calaf as play by Marcello Giodani. With all of these talented actors and show personnel, this production remains one of the best known film adaptations of Turandot. The composer of Turandot is Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini, who was born on December 28, 1858 in the small town of Lucca Italy. Puccini came from 5 generations of musicians and began writing operas at the age of 21. His realistic verismo style, which means truth or reality in Italian, allowed him to identify with his characters in a realistic way and his operas reflect real life situations. Puccini liked to write operas with heroines rather than heroes. His operas almost always include a death for the sake of love. Despite his operatic genius, Puccini only wrote ten operas in his lifetime. He died on November 22, 1924 at the age of 66. At the time of his death, he was only one act short of completing Turandot. His close friend and fellow composer, Arturo Toscanini , finished Turandot shortly after his death. Puccini has been referred to by many critics as the greatest composer of Italian operaafter Verdi (Brittanica.com).

Post World War II, Nuremberg was the center for justice to trial various Nazi and German officials from their heinous war crimes. After the Nuremberg trials, Nuremberg began to urbanize like the rest of Germany recovering from World War II by redeveloping neighborhoods and streets. Most of the streets were designed to be small and inaccessible by more than a few cars at a time. This can be directly seen in the figure below. The figure describes the change of spatial air structure of NO2 from the 1980s to the late 1990 s where the upwind pushes the air out of the city and then circulates back to the city. However, during the Industrial Revolution in Victorian England, this rift reached its peak. The working class labored for long hours and received miniscule wages, whereas the bourgeoisie grew abundantly wealthy through the labor of the working class. Published in 1848 and 1854 respectively, Karl Marxs The Communist Manifesto and Charles Dickens Hard Times both comment on these troubles. While Hard Times is a novel which tells a story and The Communist Manifesto is a short publication which tries to bring about social change, both writings offer a sharp critique of the class antagonism brought about by capitalism at the height of the Industrial... While Bounderby was a member of the lower class in his youth, he has completely turned his back on them. He treats the proletarians with contempt, and he believes that all the proletarians desire to be fed on turtle soup and venison, with a gold spoon. Dickens is creating an irony here. Bounderby believes that all the proletarians want to get rich without working, yet the proletarians are actually doing all the excruciating work in the society. However, the wealth is not going to the proletarians but to Bounderby himself. In contrast, the protagonist of the novel is Stephen Blackpool, who represents the average proletarian. He is not very educated, he works long hours at a difficult factory job, and he gets paid very little for this job. Blackpool is a tragic character who is constantly being taken advantage of by members of higher classes. Bounderby takes advantage of Blackpool through wage labor, and Tom Gradgrind takes advantage of him by framing him for the bank robbery. This all leads to a life full of sufferings, including exile from Coketown and an untimely death. Blackpool would be a perfect model for Marx in order to showcase the sufferings of the proletarians in Victorian England. Bounderby had complete control over Blackpool. Bounderby could decide

Franz Joseph Haydn s Symphony No. 94 Symphony When listening to Classical music I think of rich, precise, high quality, and pristine music that either gives you relaxing feeling or gives you that want to dance feeling. One of my favorite composers of this era was Franz Joseph Haydn and he incorporated both of these feelings in his arrangements. Franz Joseph Haydn was born in 1732 in Austria. He struggled early in life and worked as a freelance musician. He began his career singing soprano at Saint Stephen s Cathedral and later started giving keyboard lessons, playing in street bands, and singing or playing violin and organ at three different churches every Sunday (Wright, C. The genre of this musical composition is a symphony and it consists of a three movement minuet and trio. The piece has a stately dance feel to it with a very solid rhythm, nice melody, and a rich full sound. It is written in ternary form and the entire minuet trio minuet forms an ABA arrangement (Wright, C.M., 2014, p. 166). The divisions between sections of the piece are well indicated and recognized by a change of theme, instrumentation, and volume. I really liked the way the timpani helped accentuate the beat and help give the piece a driving tempo at times. The woodwinds and strings also flowed well together as if telling a story. Some of the things that stuck out to me and make this an enjoyable symphony were the rich full sound of the orchestra instruments along with the bouncy rhythm and tempo. While listening to the arrangement I could hardly sit still, the music just made me want to move with it. It gave me the mental image of a large stately ballroom with numerous dancers dancing about. I also liked the way different sections of the arrangement were easily recognized by a change in volume and

Freudian Literary Analysis Of Doubt By John Patrick Shanley Freudian(Psychoanalytical) Literary Analysis of Doubt Doubt by John Patrick Shanley is about a nun who is entirely convinced that a priest had done something inappropriate to one of the students and taken advantage of the fact that the student (Donald Muller) is an African American. Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the nun, concluded that Father Flynn, the priest, had been forcing Donald Muller to drink wine and molesting him. With the help of a naive nun named Sister James, Sister Aloysius attempted to investigate her assumption of Father Flynn s actions even if it meant contacting Donald s mother. Sister Aloysius is a stereotypical splenetic Catholic School nun who believes that being an unsympathetic and oppressive person to the students is the most effective method in order to make the students oblige to her commands. The literary theory chosen for this literature work is the Freudian literary theory. Freudian literary theory is based on the works of Sigmund Freud and workings of the mind and instinct as well as sexuality. The play Doubt and Freudian literary theory can be related because Freud s work reveals the id, ego and superego and how it affects a person. Id is a natural instinct. Ego ensures that the impulses of the id is expressed in an acceptable behavior. Superego provides guidelines and morals for making judgments. These approaches give the patient a broad choice of providers and some financial incentive in the form of lower cost sharing to seek care from a provider participating in the bundled payment program. However, to create enough steerage to these providers, the incentives will have to be significant; providers may think twice about participating in bundled payment if patients still have a broad choice of providers. Purchasers are likely to be more successful at getting providers to accept bundled payment if providers can expect greater patient volume when they do. To achieve maximum savings and better patient outcomes by driving volume to high value providers, CPR recommends benefit design approaches that create incentives for enrollees to seek care from them. Options 1 and 2 above are examples of benefit designs that are more likely to yield higher results than those strategies that offer modest benefit design differentials between a bundled payment provider and a non bundled payment provider. Employee education and benefit designs that either encourage or require the use of treatment decision support (TDS) tools can help consumers feel better about their treatment decisions and prepare them for more aggressive benefit strategies that steer patients

This drinking culture was defined by masculinity and by free flowing alcohol that permeated all throughout America, city to city. The saloons became so popular with working men because it was time they could spend away from their wives and their homes. In Catherine Murdock s book Domesticating Drink she argues that these elements of saloon culture, exclusivity, inebriety, and violence, were eliminated by the increase in popularity of mixed sex speakeasies, cocktail parties, and the overall domestication of drink. But this conclusion misinterprets the history of alcohol from Prohibition to the present. Although alcohol is now consumed without the exclusively of the past, it has evolved to be over sexualized and associated with a masculine culture of binge drinkingover sexualized and domestic violence. The domestication of drink did allow women to integrate into the drinking cultureof America and allowed women to join the drinking population if they choose to drink. Murdock was correct in saying that the exclusivity of the all male saloon culture crumbled in the nineteen teens and onwards into the twenties, thirties, and forties. One of the most important transitions was that alcohol became far more prevalent in the household setting (165). The rise of cocktail parties gave women an opportunity to drink that was softened feminized enough to remove its most

The time period of the speeches is quite interesting, the first taking place before The Civil War and the second one, after The Civil War. His word choice is elaborate and precis, which makes it quite easy to analysis what he is trying to put forward in his speeches. Although some may argue that Lincoln had other ideas in mind, it is quite evident that his vision of America was heavily based around equality of all people. His underlined intentions, the information he puts forward, and his words about religion are all strong examples of his views on the situation of equality in America. This can be further explained by analyzing the two speeches in question. Before anything else, it is very important to analyze the intentions behind his speeches. This will give insight into what exactly Lincoln s vision of America was and how he strives to obtain that. These thoughts include the conflicting views about war on either side and the mention of slavery as well. With all this being said, both speeches seem to hold the same intention. Lincoln mentions slavery and equality in both excerpts and his thought seem not

Aylmer proceeds much farther than this by completely eradicating the birthmark and killing his wife. The conflict between Aylmer s love of science and love for Georgianna leads to her tragic death. The birthmark continually taints his ideal love of woman. As far as Aylmer is concerned, the only thing that keeps Georgianna from perfection is the birthmark; ... seeing her otherwise so perfect, he found this one defect grow more and more intolerable... (167). This man, intrinsically scientific, would not deem it necessary to attempt perfection if he did not possess a love for and deep attachment to science: ... had Aylmer not been a scientist, a daring experimenter, the birthmark on his wife s cheek would hardly have come to obsess him (Brooks and

Film Analysis Of Blade Runner EDITED VERSION Blade Runner Ridley Scott directed Blade Runner (1982) after his latest hit Alien (1979) This is the start of major fame and recognition in his career and he is still cementing his unique vision onto the industry. The Film is located in a dark futuristic city yet vibrant with neon lights and crowds of people but this world has lots of backstory with off world colonies and advanced technology. The film is loosely based on a novel called Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968) By Philip K. Dick both having the same plot and sharing the same world. Blade Runner has a dark futuristic city vibe yet vibrant with neon lights and crowds of people. The way Scott makes us move through the city in a bird s eye view at odd angles when moving to a new location draws a sense of awe seeing these massive structures and this endless sprawling city in its midst. Camera work is used to make you feel claustrophobic in this packed tight city. The set was almost entirely filmed indoors making this movie very dark, with an ambient controlled environment. The creative process that went into this movie is astounding! Huge model pieces were put to together to show off the megastructures in 2019 Los Angeles. Almost every set piece serves a purpose in convincing this forced reality upon you. It s one thing to see the world of Blade Runner and another to hear the great work of music the film has. An exquisite masterpiece, composer Vangelis has crafted. Blending very well many sounds

This image, most likely from a fashion magazine, promotes Vera Wang s dress line. The advertisement uses three significant contrasts to draw the buyer in. First, the model in the actual dress line. Second, the flourishing background the models are put in. It makes you think about what the photographer was trying to portray. Lastly, the display case made the models are standing in and around. The modelin the front draws in the buyer, but the case is see through, allowing the viewer to see the model standing on the back side and part of the models arm to the left. The image suggests that someone who wears Vera Wang can have multiple styles and still feel good in whatever type of style that is. The greenery background gives the ad an interesting contrast. This is a nature setting, as implied by the grass and plants. Most of this background is not very visible, as the models take up most of the advertisement. The brightness of the plants suggest this photo was taken midday when the sun was at its peak. It was taken with a shallow depth of field, meaning the background is blurred and the main focus is on the objects in the front of the photo, The greenery is not very green, but fades into the background. There are no animals in the trees in the back, maybe suggesting this was taken in a place without a lot of wildlife, or the fact that there s no resources for these
