In the case of Re Holborn Air Raid Distress Fund [1946] Ch 194, a fund collected by employees
of a definite firm to provide money for the assistance of distress suffered by any employees as a
result of air raids could not be charitable. The welfares were limited to the employees of a
company which , as we shall see , is too limited a class anyway , but the deciding factor for Lord
Greene MR was the counseling nature of the fund. Charities must in general be for the benefit of
the public or of a section of the public and the meaning of these relationship was considered in
the case of Oppenheim v Tobacco Securities Trust [1951] AC 297 where in this case, a fund was
formed to provide education for the children of the employees and former employees of British
American Tobacco Ltd. These established a significant number of people, it was predictable that the

Essay On Scopes Trial
The Scopes Trial Project...
Evolution vs. Creationism
John Scopes: He was a teacher in Tennessee who went on trial for teaching evolution in his
classroom. This is a big deal because at this time the were many religious people. He saw this case
as a chance to stand up for academic freedom. After days on the trial, the jury only took a few
minutes to decide that Scopes was guilty. Later on, he conviction was overturned.
John Butler: He was on the opposing side of evolution. He had a strong strong concern for education
. He believed that it wasn t right that parents could raise their child God fearing only to be robbed
of their faith by learning about evolution. He made the law that made it unlawful for any teacher to
teach evolution in the classroom. Which basically meant that they couldn t teach anything that didn
t go along with what was in the bible.
William Jennings Bryan: He was on the opposing side of Scopes. He was also a former presidential
candidate. During the trial, he gave impressive orations. Bryan was one of ... Show more content on

Some were long lasting and others were short. The Prezi by Bryan Lidman states, Another religious
repercussion the Scopes Trial had was the fact that, even to this very day, those who hold the
fundamental belief system of their religions (especially Christianity) protest and heatedly debate
over evolution being taught in public schools, when creationism is not allowed to be taught in
science courses. The mere fact that the way students should be taught in science, and what
should be taught in public school courses, is still a hot topic in today s day and age shows how
large and important the Scopes case was in the minds of the American people. A large, immediate
effect of the Scopes Trial was how quickly it captured, not only America s, but the whole world s
interest. This is saying that one of the main effects of the case was with religion. The people wanted

Nihilism According To Nietzsche
The nihilism analysis has been prevalent position over the past few years. Its anticipated purpose is
to demand questions about the norms made in a philosophical debate. These contain the notion that
one must actually suggest and preserve an idea in order to contextualize one s idea.
Tacitly, this philosophy, nihilism, seems new to most people and to philosophy as a whole.
Especially from a Western standpoint. But Nietzsche conducts an unapologetic attack on what
society has deemed as conformist morality. And at the end of the 19th Century (when he died) this
could have struck many as more progressive rather than conservative. Many during that time,
however, saw it as pure sacrilege. The entrenched on both sides have made it difficult... Show more

As a communications major, the focus should not be on the words themselves, but rather on the
more in depth meaning of those words. Zarathustra says the coined phrase and follows up with,
We have killed Him. In laymen s terms, the scientific certainty has made God archaic and
outdated. But really, there is an underlayment here. The underlying idea that it is not just God (this
supernatural icon in the sky) that is dead, but rather the idea that many of the absolutes that we
discussed previously have died. One specifically being morality. These outmoded morals cannot
direct the humans in a more intricate world/society. There are many discussions that have been
had about this phrase and what it could mean, but the most significant is that the value itself is
prospectively weak. Humans have transformed into this complicated being, and constrained by
this badness of morals. There is one woman who would argue in a Newsweek article that
Nietzsche through objective morality. Karen Armstrong of Newsweek states in the article History
of God that ...Nietzsche was right to say that human beings killed God. Even fundamentalists
(whose faith is essentially modern and innovative) bear to the fact that men and women can no
longer be religious in the same way as their ancestors. In the postmodern world, it was generally
understood that while reason was indispensable for mathematics, science, or politics. It could, not
by itself give human beings access to the divine. But the extraordinary success of scientific
rationalism in the modern world has made reason the only path to truth. We assume that God is an
objective fact, like the atom, whose existence can be proved empirically. When we find the
demonstration unconvincing, we lose faith. Our neglect of the esthetic of prayer, liturgy, and
mythology has indeed killed our sense of the divine. 1 Nietzsche labels this as a bit of

The Planetary System Of The Earth And Moon
Abstract The planetary system consisting of the Earth and Moon has been closely examined since
the birth of man. The Moon is a scientifically important planet that preserves a unique history of
planetary formation and early development, as well as recording the historical space environment
and cosmic radiation for billions of years. Due to its proximity to the Earth, the Moonhas also been
a target for human exploration and long term extraterrestrial habitation. Knowledge of the Moon s
characteristics and its resources has become especially important for planning future space travel
from Earth. Relationships between the Earth and Moon in origin, composition, and orbital
dynamics are critical to scientific understanding as well as to the ultimate goals of lunar
infrastructure development and habitation. The Moon has several unique characteristics when
compared to the Earth which stem primarily from its lack of water, atmosphere, and biological
life. Unlike on Earth, sedimentation on the Moon occurs primarily as a result of meteoroid
impacts, but also by other means. Lunar soil is the fine fraction of the regolith found on the surface
of the Moon. Its properties can differ significantly from those of terrestrial soil. The physical
properties of lunar soil result from mechanical disintegration of basaltic and anorthositic rock,
caused by meteoric impact and bombardment over billions of years. Weathering is primarily
mechanical, in which the lunar terrain is

Texas is unlike other states in that is so full of history that has, to this day, continued to form our
cultures, views, and laws. It is important to recognize the countries that have played a role in
creating the great State of Texas, and we do so by flying the six flags of the countries/republics
that have, at one point or another in history, laid claim to this land. These six flags are: the Spanish
flag, the French Flag, the Mexican flag, the flag of the Republic of Texas, the flag of the
Confederate States of America, and lastly the flag that currently flies over Texas, the flag of the
United States. Together these six different flags created a unique state that has taken all of the

Sam Houston was the president of the new nation, but he knew very quickly that Texas would
not be stable enough to stand alone. His first act was to petition for statehood to become an
official state of the United States but was denied because Texas was a slave state and would
need a free state to be added at the same time to keep the balance. So, from 1836 1845 the
Republic of Texas was on its own, fighting to survive with hostile Indians in the area and a
struggling economy. Just like the Mexicans, the Texans chose to encourage immigrants to come
and settle on the land. The Adelsverein Society encouraged German immigrants to come to Texas to
stimulate the economy, which worked well because by 1847 this society had brought more than
7,000 Germans to Texas (Mora). The German immigrants brought a rich culture to Texas. From
foods like bratwurst and dumplings, to music like polka that inspires our Tejano music today, it is

Examples Of Conspiracy In Angels And Demons
The title of this project, conspiracy, is taken from Dan Brown s novel Angles and Demons. The
story of the novel is shown to be a result of the conspiracy formed by a member of the Church
society. In a dictionary, the word conspiracy is defined as the act of secretly planning to do
something that is harmful or illegal . However, this is not it. Conspiracyis formed to achieve goals
which are made not by the people, but by their greed for power, wealth and respect. In Angels and
Demons, power is shown to be the main reason for the formation of conspiracy. Dan Brownhas
successfully highlighted in his book the kinds of people who form conspiracies. One can see that
the people who are apparently the most trustworthy, respectful and who happen to have a chance
in attaining power are the ones who secretly make plans to harm those who stand in their way of
achieving success . In this novel, such person is shown to be Carlo Ventresca, who is the... Show

All we need to do is be alert. We need to be aware of our own interests, our own attraction
towards things that may look beneficial to us but might end up destroying us as well as others
around us. Politicizing is interesting, undoubtedly. But is it good? Is it worth our time and hard
work? For all we know, our basic needs are to be happy and enjoy our lives. We might get
happiness on some others sorrows. But that happiness has a price. It costs us an entire worry
free life. Each and every day, we might end up getting worried of being accused of a crime that
we know we have committed. This is what happens when we conspire and get involved into
politics. And this is what we need to beware of. We must reflect on the consequences of our
actions and decisions that others will face, and even more, what we will ourselves face one day.

Essay on The Sociological Imagination
My personal condensed definition of the sociological imagination is that it is the idea one should
be aware of the societal structures around themselves, and how those structures can influence a
person and vice versa. In addition, I think that having a sociological imagination also involves a
deep appreciation for the importance of society and culture. Consequently, for a person that has
completed a basic introduction to sociologycollege course and actually paid attention, I would hope
that they have been exposed to some basic taste of the sociological imagination.
Over the past three and a half years as a student of Sociology at State University, I believe my own
sociological imagination has grown exponentially, and I have been ... Show more content on

In regards to what Mills originally thought about this concept, he wrote that the sociological
imagination enables its possessor to understand the larger historical scene in terms of its
meaning for the inner life and the external career of a variety of individuals. It enables him to
take into account how individuals, in the welter of their daily experience, often become falsely
conscious of their social positions (Mills 1959:5). In many ways, Mills own definition of this
concept is focused on shifting a person s viewpoint of the world from a singular and
individualistic ideal to a viewpoint that looks more about the societal and historical view of the
world, especially within the context of a person s current placement in social history.
However, as I mentioned earlier, other sociologists have also formulated the same general
concept that Mills touched upon in his sociological imagination. An example is the work of
Peter Berger and his idea about having a sociological perspective. Specifically, one of Berger s key
elements of his sociological perspective as having involves a process of seeing through the
facades of social structures.... (Berger 1963:29). In addition, Berger believes that being
sociologically aware allows a sense of consciousness that Berger argues is a pre requisite to true
freedom ; thus, he always thought of sociology as a form of

Grades
Grades in the realm of education are standardized measurements of varying levels of comprehension
within a subject area.
Grades can be assigned in letters (for example, A, B, C, D, or F), as a range (for example 4.0
1.0), as a number out of a possible total (for example out of 20 or 100), as descriptors (excellent,
great, satisfactory, needs improvement), in percentages, or, as is common in some post secondary
institutions in some countries, as a Grade Point Average (GPA). GPA is calculated by taking the
number of grade points a student earned in a given period of time divided by the total number of
credits taken.[1] The GPA can be used by potential employers or further post secondary institutions
to assess and compare applicants. A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was done primarily for the students benefit, since they were not permitted to move on to the
next level until they demonstrated their mastery of the current one. It was also the earliest example
of a narrative report card.
With the passage of compulsory attendance laws at the elementary level during the late nineteenth
and early twentieth centuries, the number of students entering high schools increased rapidly.
Between 1870 and 1910 the number of public high schools in the United States increased from 500
to 10,000. As a result, subject area instruction in high schools became increasingly specific and
student populations became more diverse. While elementary teachers continued to use written
descriptions and narrative reports to document student learning, high school teachers began using
percentages and other similar markings to certify students accomplishments in different subject
areas. This was the beginning of the grading and reporting systems that exist today.
The shift to percentage grading was gradual, and few American educators questioned it. The
practice seemed a natural by product of the increased demands on high school teachers, who now
faced classrooms with growing numbers of students. But in 1912 a study by two Wisconsin
researchers seriously challenged the reliability of percentage grades as accurate indicators of
students achievement.
In their study, Daniel Starch and Edward Charles Elliott showed that high school

Managing Human Capital Is Important Element Of The...
CHAPTER ONE
1.Introduction
1.1.Background of the study
The success and failure of every organization depends on the type of employees they have and their
ability to add values to achieve their organization objective. Human capital is an important element
of the intangible assets of an organization (Armstrong and Baron, 2007).
Managing human capital is therefore an approach to managing people that regards them an asset and
stress that; competitive advantage is achieved by strategic investments in those assets through
employee engagement and retention, talent management, learning and development programs

Relationship Between Layoffs And Voluntary Turnover
Relationship between Layoffs and Voluntary Turnover As the world accelerates in advancements
such as technology, the society is now capable of reaching greater heights in efficiency more than
ever. The benefit of efficiency is not wasting any limited resources and time; however, it is not
much so when business owners attempt to become more efficient by laying off their employees. In
the business field, this strategy is called downsizing and it reduces the number of employees to
operate the business more efficiently or especially during a crisis when the economy is unstable and
the business cannot afford to maintain the current number of employees. As more and more

Psychological Spillover. This implies that a layoff experience gives a looser tie to the subsequent
employment, which means that an individual feels psychological contract violations and
amplified feelings of distrust, job insecurity, and he or she pays a greater attention to external
job opportunities. These are all factors that can potentially lead to voluntary turnover. A
psychological contract is the reciprocal exchange agreement between employee and employing
organization, as perceived by the worker. A new employee has this general schema ( a set of
expectations) of a psychological contract between him and his employer and when he is laid off,
it negatively impacts the same general schema and it transfers over to his subsequent
employment. Accordingly, once he starts working at his new job, he has lower expectations and
feels less obligated to the employer leading to an increased likelihood of voluntary turnover. It is
a similar situation with the other factors. When an individual is laid off and finds a new
employment, he will start off with the corresponding trust and job security he felt when he was
laid off which was heavily brought down thus far, and he pays a greater attention to external job
opportunities because he does not trust nor feel a sturdy job security, therefore leading up to an

Rosalind Franklin was born in the year 1920 in London, England to a socially well connected,
upper class [Jewish] family (Famous Scientists Rosalind Franklin). The second of five children
to be born to Ellis Franklin and Muriel Waley (Elkin). Franklin was close to her siblings, David,

typically enjoyed by boys such as sports and competition, but she still showed a zeal and passion

Rosalind s sister, spoke about Rosalind, saying that she was highly intelligent, logical, determined

Intersectionality Reflection
The first similarities I noticed within all four of my lists is that there were multiple words that

noticed that many words related to who I was as a family member and as a student. The
differences that were noted within these lists are how some people saw me as an individual,
whereas as others placed my characteristics as part of a group. I noticed here how many different
words, from different people, who knew me in their own ways came together to describe one
thing. This is where I believe intersectionality comes to show how humans are shaped and molded

Financial Statements Of Cash Flow
The statement of cash flow is one of the financial statements that shareholders tend to evaluate to
ensure that all transactions are properly stated in each of the three activities mentioned above;
operating, investing, and financing. The statement of cash flows is also commonly overlooked by
both the balance sheets and income statements numbers.
The cash flow statement is important for the business as it brings valuable information that can
help evaluate a corporation. The statement will show if the business is low on money even if the
financial statements shows that is profitable. It will reflect if the owner withdrew to much cash from
the corporation. It will also reflect the principal payment of a loan and the correct amount used to
acquire equipment, property, and other assets that the income statement will not show. The absence
of this statement can hinder the operation of a business as the owner could easily fall in the
negative (loss) by not having eyes on the cash out flow exceeding the cash inflow.
Therefore, the adaptation of having a statement of cash flows becomes essential to any business or
organization. With the adaption of such a system personnel such as stakeholders become essential.
Stakeholders are a key role personnel when it comes to motivating the employees, acquiring
resources to assist on the final decision or final project, provide a valuable input, and ultimately
build trust with to increase consensus at the final decision making. The

On August 6, Lewinsky appeared before the grand jury to begin her testimony, and on August 17

President Clinton acknowledged to prosecutors from the office of the independent counsel that
he had had an extramarital affair with Ms. Lewinsky. In four hours of closed door testimony,
conducted in the Map Room of the White House, Clinton spoke live via closed circuit television
to a grand jury in a nearby federal courthouse. He was the first sitting president ever to testify
before a grand jury investigating his conduct. That evening, President Clinton also gave a four

relationship with Lewinsky. In the brief speech, which was wrought with legalisms, the word sex
was never spoken, and the word regret was used only in reference to his admission that he misled
the public and his family. Five weeks later, on February 12, the Senate voted on whether to
remove Clinton from office. The president was acquitted on both articles of impeachment. The
prosecution needed a two thirds majority to convict but failed to achieve even a bare majority.

Although it was brief, I have had the opportunity to meet with individuals who have had to work
within the sex industry, and learn the genesis of when it started. The film also made me realize
that I have much work to do on the way I express my curiosity towards other lifestyles. When
Sofia was in the shortbus , I kept laughing at the horrified look on her face because I could
absolutely see myself doing that. I appreciate people s sexual liberations, but the idea of having
sex so openly is baffling. I m almost envious of that sort of freedom, and believe that feeling
would help me build rapport with clients who choose to do so. Self disclosing my admiration
would provide a sense of unconditional regard I hope all my clients would feel. The film also
reaffirmed that my comfort level working with LGBT clients remains the same until I m given
the chance to attain more real life experience. I was initially curious how James and Jaime were
going to react with a married non gay female therapist, but they obviously responded well to her
(besides the slap). The thought that she was Asian American came to mind as to why they
responded to her so quickly, because Asian Americans are also considered to be an oppressed

The Russian Annexation Of Crimea
Introduction
This research paper aims to address issues relating primarily to the Russian annexation of Crimea
in 2014. Annexation in itself brings forth an array of issues under international law, and the
problem this paper looks into is whether the acquisition of the Crimean territory by the Russian
Federation was valid in terms of international law, as well as analysing the arguments brought
forward by Russia in defence of its actions leading up to the annexation of the Crimean territory.
Aspects relating to the use of force principle will be critically discussed, as well as issues relating
to infringement of state sovereignty.
1.1 The Research Problem
The main problem upon which this paper is based and aims to address relates to valid acquisition
of territory in terms of international law. Theories of acquisition of territory will be assessed as
well as their current standing under international law. Methods of acquiring territory will be
addressed, and the issues relating to the methods utilised by Russia in their annexation of the
Crimean territory will be analysed and a discussion will ensue as to whether there is any validity in
these arguments under international law with regard to annexation.
1.2 The Research Questions and Research Hypothesis
The questions this research paper will address is whether the specific methods utilised by the
Russian Federation were valid means of acquiring territory in terms of international law, elaborated

American Colonies Dbq
During the 1600s and 1700s, the English colonists established colonies in North America. There are
many reasons and people that were responsible for this movement.
For freedom or because of politics, many of the English colonists fled the English rule. Though,
there are two other reasons, economy and religion, that heavily influenced the creation and success
of the colonies; especially the Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and other Southern colonies.
Therefore, English colonists established some colonies in North America for economic and
religious reasons.
The Pennsylvania and Maryland colonies were established for religious reasons. First there was

In Virginia their economy was based on tobacco sales. It was so valuable because it couldn t be
grown in England. English tobacco imports from America in 1620 to 1775 went up in weight
from 0.1 to 102.0 million pounds. Overall Virginia s profit came mainly from tobacco exports.
Along with the increase of tobacco, the number of slaves, in Virginia especially, also went up in
this time period. This was because the colonists used slaves to farm the tobacco; the more
tobacco the more slaves they needed . Virginia had resources besides tobacco, too; they were
pigs and corn. The other Southern colonies, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, had
many other natural resources that made them a perfect spot for founding a colony, as well.
These resources were helpful for getting the colonies started, as well as providing a steady
profit from trading and selling. North Carolina had Naval stores, corn, rice, pigs, and tobacco. In
South Carolina, just like the North, had Naval stores, corn, rice, and pigs; South Carolina had
something else, indigo. This was also a valuable resource, as it could only be found in certain
places. Georgia had indigo too; as well as pigs and rice. Virginia had a strong economy because of
their tobacco production. The other southern colonies also had an abundance of other valuable

Analysis Of The Ramayana And The Ramana
A.K. Ramanujan says that in India and in Southeast Asian, no one ever reads the Ramayana and the
Mahabharata for the first time (Ramanujan 1991, p. 46). In this statement I think Ramanujan is
trying to say that even though these epics are written no one learns about them through the written
text. Being from an Indian family and hearing stories from my parents childhoods I would think
most us know the epics through stories or some visual context. I learnt about the Mahabharata by
hearing people talk about it. I am more familiar with the story of the Ramayanaby celebrating the
festival of lights. I learnt that we lit diyas to create a path for the returning Lord Ramaafter his 14
year exile. Until I became a part of my Asian 239L class did I read the Mahabharata and the
Ramayana. I have always seen the televised versions and heard stories from people. I would agree
with Ramanujan as from class we learnt about the various versions of the Ramayana though Indian
Hindu culture and the non Indian Hindu culture.
For this essay I will be looking at the Ramayana and it various Indian and non Indian versions to
understand why Ramanujan claims that the people of India and Southeast Asia never read the
Ramayana for the first time. I will also look at how the mediums through which people learn about
the epics affect the storyline and performances. There are many versions of the Ramayana which
include written and visual formats. The major differences with the written versions entail

Summer, characterized by its heavy rainfall, runs from July to mid September. Average
temperatures fall between the 70s and mid 80s. Because of the amount of humidity, fog tends to be
prevalent most summer days, with the coastal line suffering the heavy doses. July and August see
the most rainfall, with an average of 15 inches per month. Weather hazards continue in the form of
thunderstorms and the occasional monsoon.
Autumn, which falls between September and November, has average temperatures ranging from
the 50s to the 60s. Clear skies and less rain make for better visibility during the fall. No major
hazards exist during this season.
Looking at the weather from a military perspective, it is easy to conclude that rotary wing assets

According to the Department of Health (2003), Cancer Research UK (2010) and the Office of
National Statistics (2004), despite of the drop of statistics of smokers, there are still individuals
who would try smoking especially the young people between the ages of eleven to sixteen. In the
report of the three offices they listed the main reasons why young people smoke and these are
experimentation, to look mature or part of their image, there are older people smokes around
them, especially their parents, and peer pressures (DH, 2003) (ONS, 2004) (CR UK, 2010).
This experimentation can be attributed through social learning theory, where psychologists and
theorists Julian Rotter and Albert Bandura describe it as how we learn from others. Watching
others can provide information on which kind of behaviour leads to what consequences (Adams
and Bromley, 1998). Parents have strong influence among us. If we are surrounded by our
family who smokes, there is a strong possibility that we will imitate them. We also looked at
other people such as our peers, actors and singers. Seeing these people smoking can also lead us
to emulate them and try smoking. Once we learn to smoke, we keep smoking until it will be hard
for us to stop.
Another motive in experimentation among the young people came from advertising. One example
from one Tobacco Company which says I am no longer my mother s

Cinderella Short Story Essay
Through a historical analysis, we see that many aspects of the story are representative of the
time. The story is set in Germany in the 1800s. To start, the story begins with the death of
Cinderella s birth mom who became sick . . . and died (Grimm). This is because death was quite
common in the mid 1800s [and] life expectancies were only in the high thirties or early forties
(Huber). Soon after the father took himself another wife (Grimm). This is because in the 1800s
second wives were quite common, (P. Smith 107) as the main role of the man was to marry to
produce a male heir. Since the father only had Cinderella, a daughter, it was his role to remarry
and have a male to inherit his land and belongings. Remarrying was also a norm of the time for
child rearing. While the role of the man was to produce an heir, the role of the woman was to
take care of the children. Taking care of the children was typically in the hands of the mother
(Eidson). The stepmother s role would have been to watch over the children as the husband was
gone. This occurs several times throughout the story as the stepmother watches over Cinderella as
the husband goes to the fair . . . and festivals (Grimm). Women would remarry because they were
limited in resources (P. Smith 107) without a man, so it is not unusual the stepmother remarried as
well. By remarrying, the stepmother is provided for by the husband. The husband provides a home
for the girls and buys dresses,

that when it confronts the host with that infectious agent, the immune system can adequately

Doors Opening, Closing On Us, By Marge Piercy
The word doors can have different meanings. Literally, they are a slab of material that separates
something from another, usually a room. Figuratively they can have many meanings, for example,
they can symbolize a growth or a development. In addition, doors can show, an important point
where someone turns from a child into an adult, or they can symbolize celebrations held to
commemorate these special transitions. Doors can also be used to describe life s most important
parts, such as being born or passing away. The Giveris a book by Lois Lowry, it is about a boy

African Americans And African American Culture
Based on my life experiences, the characteristics described by McNamara and Burns (2009) were
essentially consistent with my experiences and perception of the African American culture. One
common characteristic is that African Americans are much more likely to live in poverty and
poverty stricken areas than White Americans (McNamara Burns, 2009). What I have learned it is
not as simple as African Americans are poorer than White Americans. While the statement is true, it
is simplistic. There are many reasons and. causes for the disparity in wealth and income between
African Americans and White American. One explanation given by McNamara and Burns (2009) is
that African Americans lived in slavery for over two centuries in what is now the United States. This
is one cause, but to rely on this as the reason for the disparity is simplistic. Slavery was outlawed
only to be replaced by discrimination against African Americans (McNamara Burns, 2009). While
the law changed, the attitudes of people did not. No law can force how a person thinks. The
attitudes of White Americans continued to see African Americans are having less rights than White
Americans (Williams, n.d.). This was especially true in the South where in the majority of the
states slavery was legal (McNamara Burns, 2009). The attitudes and discrimination are still evident
today in all areas of life. The criminal justicesystem purports to be color blind when it comes to the

The Book of the City of Ladies Essay
The Book of the City of Ladies
During the renaissance many different views of leadership surfaced.
Christine de Pizan s The Book of the City of Ladies, Niccolo
Machiavelli s The Prince, and William Shakespeare s Richard III each present distinct views of
what would make a good leader during the renaissance period. Shakespeare and Christine de Pizan
s views align most closely with Plato s. Christine de Pizan s view also aligns with
Augustine s medieval view of leadership. Machiavelli s view, however, strays the farthest from Plato
and Augustine.
In The Book of the City of Ladies, Christine presents an allegorical city made up of great ladies
from history. Allegorical characters

Through these characters, collectively known as the Virtues, Christine shows that virtue, both public
and private, holds utmost importance to a good leader. The examples used by the Virtues to
dispel lies about women help a one see a glimpse of Christine s ideal leader. The leaders used by
Christine share many similar qualities, but chief amongst these is virtue. All of Christine s
characters possess some redeeming quality which supercedes any wrong done. Christine s virtue
comes from God and manifests itself through morally virtuous characteristics. This can be seen in
the example of Valentina Visconti, the duchess of
Orleans, who Christine describes as, A lady who is strong and constant in heart, filled with
devotion to her lord and good teaching for her children, well informed in government, just
toward all, sensible in her conduct, and virtuous in all things (213). Christine places the highest
value on leaders who lead by example. Christine devotes a large section of the City of Ladies to
martyrs, saying of them women who are crowned in glory and whose fair lives serve as excellent
examples for every woman above all other wisdom. For this reason these women are the most
outstanding of our City (219).
Machiavelli takes a drastically different view on renaissance leadership, placing emphasis on

Learning Standards And High Level Of Thinking Skills
Currently in education there is a push for teachers to have rigorous learning standards and high
expectations for all their students, by challenging their students with a higher level of thinking
skills. Since the release of A Nation At Risk (National Commission on Excellence in Education,
1983) the debate about the quality of America s schools has grown exponentially (Blackburn
Williamson, 2009, p.1). Furthermore, with the implementation of No Child Left Behind in 2001,
the discussion raised to a new level. For the first time, schools were held liable for the success of
every student.
However, with an increasing amount of expectations being placed on the students to demonstrate
their abilities on standardized tests, teachers feel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So often educators only look at a students ability level when predicting achievement, ignoring that
the efficacies of these students play an influential role also (Scott, 1996, p.197).
Using students ability as the primary predictor for students achievement while disregarding
motivation, self efficacy and students mindset is detrimental to any student, because adolescent
students in middle school tend to become more performance oriented and less mastery oriented than
they were in elementary school (Anderman Mueller, 2010, p. 206). Moreover, it is particularly
perilous to students who receive special education services, because for many of them it can be a
turning point towards a diminishing future (Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development, 1989, p.
20). Adverse academic occurrences during middle school can have detrimental effects on students
motivation to learn (Anderman Mueller, 2010).
Chapter Two consists of a review of the literature relevant to the theories of mindset, self efficacy,
motivation, and attribution. In addition, any research that has been conducted that relates to these
theories will also be reviewed in this chapter. Furthermore, there will be a review of how the

Obama s Leadership During the Hurricane Sandy Disaster
Hurricane Sandy is probably one of the most devastating natural disasters in recent human history.
This is no exaggeration, as implied by its status as superstorm and its tongue in cheek nomination
as Frankenstorm. And indeed, there has been a significant scale of damage to property and in
some cases even to life itself. As the President of the United States of America, President Barack
Obama took it upon himself to personally visit the states that were hardest hit, and to offer support
where he could. This in itself may not be extremely unusual for a current president. However,
Obama took time out of a very busy election campaign, which he was by no means certain of
winning, to lend both personal, emotional, and financial support before, during, and after the storm.
Before the storm, the President set aside his drive to win the election to fulfill his duties as
current president, in his own words, to save lives. (Fisher, 2012). For the President, this meant
acting as crisis manager and disaster official by putting the Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) on alert, ensuring that food and water provisions were in place, and speaking
with all the governors of the affected states to ensure that they had measures in place to help and
support their citizens through the crisis. He also had the difficult task of ensuring that the country
set its political differences aside at a time when these differences were at the forefront of every
consciousness in the country.

My Consequences Of Crafting
My attention on crafting was it was, though, I almost failed to notice the trio of seven foot tall
dinosaurs skulking through the bush on the right side of the road... Almost. One was closing in
from in front and to the right, behind to the right, and the last almost directly to the right A
pincer with the one in the center to finish me off. Definitely not something a friendly lumbering
herbivore would do. No siree. I glanced left and right, eyeing the six foot fencing on either side
with slack, rusted cables that gave little comfort. And looking up the road I could see two wide
breaks in the fence where the poles were flat out gone. Trampled down most likely. The thing was
as holed as swiss cheese. So it was useless, and then... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Almost as one, they fled out of my range with the swarm on their heels. I watched the area they d
left before something clicked. They d communicated. I replayed the last minute in my head as I
walked. The first had called out and... yes, the other had been in retreat as well, but at the call, the
other two changed direction... and it had been the three of them working together, I was certain of
it, like... a pack. So something like the dino equivalent of wolves then? Interesting. Well, interesting
in that they might be telling each other they were retreating. A dinosaurwhatever person would
probably be dancing in glee. They never quite left, though. As I walked they ghosting in and out of
range, lingering at the edge of my awareness until I rebuffed them. Interesting, in a different sense,
but they weren t quite pushing it. Watching how they acted, I almost wanted to say they were
testing how the swarm reacted when they got too close. But that level of pattern recognition...
Communication was one thing, but that was a bit much. Nearing a junction in the road the sock
on my right foot slipped down under my heel, but I ignored it. Instead, I stopped at the fork to
look down both roads, standing on the rail where it crossed with another. Left and right, staying on
the road I was on would lead wherever, but the left was a road that connected with another

Its anticipated purpose is to demand questions about the norms made in a philosophical debate. These contain the notion that one must actually suggest and preserve an idea in order to contextualize one s idea. Tacitly, this philosophy, nihilism, seems new to most people and to philosophy as a whole. Especially from a Western standpoint. But Nietzsche conducts an unapologetic attack on what society has deemed as conformist morality. The underlying idea that it is not just God (this supernatural icon in the sky) that is dead, but rather the idea that many of the absolutes that we discussed previously have died. One specifically being morality. These outmoded morals cannot direct the humans in a more intricate world/society. Due to its proximity to the Earth, the Moonhas also been a target for human exploration and long term extraterrestrial habitation. In regards to what Mills originally thought about this concept, he wrote that the sociological imagination enables its possessor to understand the larger historical scene in terms of its meaning for the inner life and the external career of a variety of individuals. It enables him to take into account how individuals, in the welter of their daily experience, often become falsely conscious of their social positions (Mills 1959:5). In many ways, Mills own definition of this concept is focused on shifting a person s viewpoint of the world from a singular and individualistic ideal to a viewpoint that looks more about the societal and historical view of the world, especially within the context of a person s current placement in social history. However, as I mentioned earlier, other sociologists have also formulated the same general concept that Mills touched upon in his sociological imagination. An example is the work of Peter Berger and his idea about having a sociological perspective. Specifically, one of Berger s key elements of his sociological perspective as having involves a process of seeing through the facades of social structures.... (Berger 1963:29). With the passage of compulsory attendance laws at the elementary level during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the number of students entering high schools increased rapidly. Between 1870 and 1910 the number of public high schools in the United States increased from 500 to 10,000. As a result, subject area instruction in high schools became increasingly specific and student populations became more diverse. While elementary teachers continued to use written descriptions and narrative reports to document student learning, high school teachers began using percentages and other similar markings to certify students accomplishments in different subject areas. This was the beginning of the grading and reporting systems that exist today. The shift to percentage grading was gradual, and few American educators questioned it. The practice seemed a natural by product of the increased demands on high school teachers, who now faced classrooms with growing numbers of students. But in 1912 a study by two Wisconsin researchers seriously challenged the reliability of percentage grades as accurate indicators of students achievement. Though, there are two other reasons, economy and religion, that heavily influenced the creation and success of the colonies; especially the Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and other Southern colonies. The other Southern colonies, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, had many other natural resources that made them a perfect spot for founding a colony, as well. These resources were helpful for getting the colonies started, as well as providing a steady profit from trading and selling. North Carolina had Naval stores, corn, rice, pigs, and tobacco. Ramanujan says that in India and in Southeast Asian, no one ever reads the Ramayana and the Mahabharata for the first time (Ramanujan 1991, p. 46). In this statement I think Ramanujan is trying to say that even though these epics are written no one learns about them through the written text. Being from an Indian family and hearing stories from my parents childhoods I would think most us know the epics through stories or some visual context. I learnt about the Mahabharata by hearing people talk about it. I am more familiar with the story of the Ramayanaby celebrating the festival of lights. To start, the story begins with the death of Cinderella s birth mom who became sick . . . and died (Grimm). This is because death was quite common in the mid 1800s [and] life expectancies were only in the high thirties or early forties (Huber). Soon after the father took himself another wife (Grimm). This is because in the 1800s second wives were quite common, (P. Smith 107) as the main role of the man was to marry to produce a male heir. Since the father only had Cinderella, a daughter, it was his role to remarry and have a male to inherit his land and belongings. Remarrying was also a norm of the time for child rearing. While the role of the man was to produce an heir, the role of the woman was to take care of the children. Taking care of the children was typically in the hands of the mother (Eidson). The stepmother s role would have been to watch over the children as the husband was gone. This occurs several times throughout the story as the stepmother watches over Cinderella as the husband goes to the fair . . . and festivals (Grimm). Women would remarry because they were limited in resources (P. Smith 107) without a man, so it is not unusual the stepmother remarried as well. One common characteristic is that African Americans are much more likely to live in poverty and poverty stricken areas than White Americans (McNamara Burns, 2009). What I have learned it is not as simple as African Americans are poorer than White Americans. While the statement is true, it is simplistic. There are many reasons and. causes for the disparity in wealth and income between African Americans and White American. One explanation given by McNamara and Burns (2009) is that African Americans lived in slavery for over two centuries in what is now the United States. This is one cause, but to rely on this as the reason for the disparity is simplistic. Slavery was outlawed only to be replaced by discrimination against African Americans (McNamara Burns, 2009). The attitudes of White Americans continued to see African Americans are having less rights than White Americans (Williams, n.d.). Since the release of A Nation At Risk (National Commission on Excellence in Education, 1983) the debate about the quality of America s schools has grown exponentially (Blackburn Williamson, 2009, p.1). Furthermore, with the implementation of No Child Left Behind in 2001, the discussion raised to a new level. For the first time, schools were held liable for the success of every student. However, with an increasing amount of expectations being placed on the students to demonstrate their abilities on standardized tests, teachers feel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So often educators only look at a students ability level when predicting achievement, ignoring that the efficacies of these students play an influential role also (Scott, 1996, p.197). Using students ability as the primary predictor for students achievement while disregarding motivation, self efficacy and students mindset is detrimental to any student, because adolescent students in middle school tend to become more performance oriented and less mastery oriented than they were in elementary school (Anderman Mueller, 2010, p. 206). Moreover, it is particularly perilous to students who receive special education services, because for many of them it can be a turning point towards a diminishing future (Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development, 1989, p. 20). Adverse academic occurrences during middle school can have detrimental effects on students motivation to learn (Anderman Mueller, 2010). Chapter Two consists of a review of the literature relevant to the theories of mindset, self efficacy, motivation, and attribution. In addition, any research that has been conducted that relates to these theories will also be reviewed in this chapter. Furthermore, there will be a review of how the ... • 47. Obama s Leadership During the Hurricane Sandy Disaster Hurricane Sandy is probably one of the most devastating natural disasters in recent human history. This is no exaggeration, as implied by its status as superstorm and its tongue in cheek nomination as Frankenstorm. And indeed, there has been a significant scale of damage to property and in some cases even to life itself. As the President of the United States of America, President Barack Obama took it upon himself to personally visit the states that were hardest hit, and to offer support where he could. This in itself may not be extremely unusual for a current president. However, Obama took time out of a very busy election campaign, which he was by no means certain of winning, to lend both personal, emotional, and financial support before, during, and after the storm. Before the storm, the President set aside his drive to win the election to fulfill his duties as current president, in his own words, to save lives. (Fisher, 2012). For the President, this meant acting as crisis manager and disaster official by putting the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on alert, ensuring that food and water provisions were in place, and speaking with all the governors of the affected states to ensure that they had measures in place to help and support their citizens through the crisis. He also had the difficult task of ensuring that the country set its political differences aside at a time when these differences were at the forefront of every consciousness in the country. ... • 48. My Consequences Of Crafting My attention on crafting was it was, though, I almost failed to notice the trio of seven foot tall dinosaurs skulking through the bush on the right side of the road... Almost. One was closing in from in front and to the right, behind to the right, and the last almost directly to the right A pincer with the one in the center to finish me off. Definitely not something a friendly lumbering herbivore would do. No siree. I glanced left and right, eyeing the six foot fencing on either side with slack, rusted cables that gave little comfort. And looking up the road I could see two wide breaks in the fence where the poles were flat out gone. Trampled down most likely. The thing was as holed as swiss cheese. So it was useless, and then... I replayed the last minute in my head as I walked. The first had called out and... yes, the other had been in retreat as well, but at the call, the other two changed direction... and it had been the three of them working together, I was certain of it, like... a pack. So something like the dino equivalent of wolves then? Interesting. Well, interesting in that they might be telling each other they were retreating. A dinosaurwhatever person would probably be dancing in glee. They never quite left, though. As I walked they ghosting in and out of range, lingering at the edge of my awareness until I rebuffed them. Interesting, in a different sense, but they weren t quite pushing it. Watching how they acted, I almost wanted to say they were testing how the swarm reacted when they got too close. But that level of pattern recognition... Communication was one thing, but that was a bit much. Nearing a junction in the road the sock on my right foot slipped down under my heel, but I ignored it. Instead, I stopped at the fork to look down both roads, standing on the rail where it crossed with another. Left and right, staying on the road I was on would lead wherever, but the left was a road that connected with another ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
