The way in which one views the world and forms an opinion about it is entirely based on what they
have experience throughout their lives. This idea was presented in a very long winded essay by John
Berger. While keeping this idea in the back of my mind I analyze image D form the Orphan Black
Stills that we were provided without any prior knowledge of what story this TV show was supposed to
tell. After viewing the episode in which the still I had chosen to decipher my views on what occurred
changed a surprising amount simply from the context now provided. With context to frame the still it
shows how even a seemingly innocent image can be very different than how it is first presented; even
when viewed in hundreds of different locations simultaneously. This potentially challenges John
Berger belief that the way one sees something is based primarily on a set context highlighted by one s
life experiences; but instead one s life experiences highlight what they see with the context helps them

Broken Spears Summary
The book, Broken Spears was an interesting reading that talked about the Spanish conquest of
Tenochtitlan. Throughout the book, it becomes clear that the Spanish were successful in their conquest
as a result of a number of factors.The Spanish were intimidating in appearance and in their weaponry.
They had animals that the Aztecs had never seen before. They also formed alliances with rival tribes,
like the Tlaxcaltecas tribe. Finally, one of the key reasons that the Spaniards were able to successfully
conquer the Aztecs was due to the fact that Motecuhzoma himself, believed that Cortes and his men
were gods. In regards appearance, the Spanish were essentially covered from head to toe in iron armor.
Even the weapons they carried were covered in iron. The Aztecs were unaccustomed to the iron clad
individuals. In regards to weaponry, the Spanish were, even more, intimidating in the fact that they
had cannons. The Aztecs describe the cannon to Motecuhzoma, a thing like a ball of stone comes out
of its entrails: it comes shooting sparks and raining fire...smoke that comes out of it has a pestilent
odor. The odor penetrates even the brain and causes great discomfort ( 30). For me personally, the only
reason I can think of for Cortes to fire off a cannon was to show dominance over the Indians. For
people who had never even heard of a cannon before, it is understandable that the Native Americans

Aquinas Just War Essay
St. Thomas Aquinas is another great theologian of the Catholic Church who believed in Just War
Theory. St. Aquinas explained three conditions under which war could be justified. First, there must be
a Sovereign authority under which war is waged, and a private individual has no capacity to wage war.
Aquinas argues that, those in authority are responsible for the general good of the city, kingdom or
province under them, and they are allowed by law to use the sword to defend that good from internal
disturbance from evildoers. In the same way, Aquinas argues that it is the responsibility of the
authority to use the sword to defend the common good from external foes. Therefore, it is Aquina s

This seems to agree with the position of St. Augustine in that; there must be wrongs commited by the
side that is fought. However, Augustine specifies that the group must have commited injustice to
humanity while Aquinas says that the group must have commited some fault which makes it deserve
the war. The condition that the group must deserve to be fought creates a problem of determining the
degree of fault that justifies war. Aquinas leaves the decision to the authorities to determine what kind
of fault makes a group to deserve being fought. However, Aquinas should have stated what conditions
make a group deserve war rather than leaving it to the authorities to avoid people going to war by ill
will. In contrast to Aquinas, Augustine was describing a defensive war necessitated by injustices,
while Aquinas seems to talk of offensive war. An analysis of the two theorists shows that Augustine is
for the idea that war should be avoided at all costs, while Aquinas would justify many
