Guantanamo Bay and Human Rights Violations by the United...
IntroductionGuantanamo Bay, Cuba is originally a naval base that was once used to house
detention facilities for Haitian and Cuban refugees fleeing to the United States. It was also used as
a refueling station for Navy ships. It was then converted into a high level detention facility to
house enemy troops captured in the War on Terror campaign by Secretary of Defense, Donald
Rumsfield. It has three main camps that house the prisoners. These prisoners of war were later
referred to as enemy combatants. They were excluded from the prisoner of war statutes of the
Geneva Convention because of their involvement in a foreign terrorist organization and therefore
earning themselves the title of terrorists. The Guantanamo Bay Detention Center served as the
perfect location to send these terrorists. It allowed the United States to strip them of any due
process or protection that is provided by US law. Due to its location, being in foreign territory they
are only subjected to military law. They are close enough for them to be monitored without
interference of intentional agencies or international oversight. Furthermore, the US Government is
holding these men without due process because they are deemed too dangerous to be released into
the public because of their associations with terrorist organizations and possession of valuable
information relating to National Security such as location of key members of a terrorist groups,
whereabouts. However, the United States cannot release those

Similarities Between Catholic Immigrants And Chinese...
Since the first arrival of Europeans in America and their mass genocide of its native people,
America s inhabitants have been primarily immigrants and their descendants. However, despite this
fact, Americans have a history of mistreating immigrants. Although they are two distinctly different
groups of people with distinctly different cultures the similarities between the treatment of Catholic
and Chinese immigrants in America are immense and bear only a few differences. Both groups
were discriminated against and forced to work horrible jobs for unfair wages, however, only
immigrants from China were banned from permanently immigrating the country completely.
Chinese and Catholic immigrants were discriminated against when they arrived in America and
were pressured to assimilate into the mainstream American culture by losing their own. Catholic
immigrants were particularly hated because many people and their ancestors had come to America
to flee religious persecution from the Catholic Church. Although immigrants... Show more content

However, they were willing to do anything to achieve potential class movement, so they were
often exploited and forced to work jobs with horrible conditions and unfair wages. Resentment
grew toward immigrants in America because they were willing to work for less money to help
their families. Catholic immigrants were considered invaders of the work and Chinese immigrants
were seen as job stealers. In reality, however, most immigrants were working jobs that no one else
was willing to do. Chinese immigrants faced high death and injury potential as they worked on
railroads and in coal mines, and Catholic immigrants did mind numbing assembly line work in
sweatshops and factories. These jobs were not highly sought after and only desperation would force
someone into working these jobs. Immigrants work was essential to society, but they were treated

Andy Warhol Biography
More Than 15 Minutes of Fame Andy Warhol s name is recognized by all kinds of people, art
fanatics, cell phone obsessed teenagers, and even elementary school students. He was one of the
most popular American print artists and helped create Pop Art. Warhol is still one of the most
prominent artists of American culture. His repetitive style, early childhood struggles, and all
around personality is what makes him stand out. Andy Warholwas born on August 6th, 1928 with
the name Andrew Warhola. His parents, Andrej and Julia Warhola, were immigrants from
Czechoslovakia. Julia Warhola cleaned houses and sold handmade metal flowers, and Andrej
Warhola was a coal miner. When Warhol was eight years old, he was diagnosed with rheumatic

1970 s, Warhol wrote more books including The Philosophy of Andy Warhol and Exposures.
Warhol became a celebrity of his time. He went to parties and nightclubs, especially Studio 54
and Max s City Night Club. Warhol was often invited to the White House. He was believed to be
gay because of the homoerotic imagery hidden in his art. If you want to know all about Warhol,
just look at the surface of my paintings and films... and there I am. There s nothing behind it

communicative in public.
In 1987, Warhol got a serious gallbladder infection, and had to get an operation done to get it
removed. The operation went well, but he had a heart attack in recovery and died. When he died,
he had one hundred million dollars. His money was used to start a foundation to promote Visual

The Characteristics Of A Detective Fiction
Detective Fiction Essay
A detective fiction is a literary genre in form of a short story or novel that deals with crimes,
usually murder and detectives are involved to seek out justice for the victims. The detectives
involved in detective fictions can either be private, amateur, or police detectives. There are also
other characters like the suspects and the side kicks. An amateur detective is a detective who has no
license to operate as a private investigator neither is he/she a member of the police force. These
detectives have a different profession, but are not trained in criminal investigation. They have a
passion in crime and delivering justice to the society. On the other hand, a private detective also
known as hard boiled is a male or female detective trained in criminal investigation. Dealing with
crime is his/her profession, therefore, has good physical attributes and uses the gun efficiently. The
two detectives differ in two ways; first, they differ in financial status, secondly they differ on how
they use violence in their investigations.
The first difference between an amateur detective and a private detective is their financial statuses.

In addition, most of them are always poor. A good example is in the Simple Art of Murder by
Raymond Chandler. Raymond writes that, He is a relatively poor man, or he would not be a
detective at all. He is a common man or he could not go among common people, (219). Another
example is the short story Trouble is My Business by Phillip Marlowe. This story presents a
needy private detective. When he is hired, he confesses that, I started to get up from my chair,
then remembered that business had been bad for a month and that I needed the money (Marlowe

The Growing Problem of Music Piracy Essay
The Growing Problem of Music Piracy
At the turn of the millenium, the music industry has been faced with an unforeseen phenomenon
that has affected its very foundation mass scale music piracy. The decline of CD sales in the past
three years have been blamed on the availability of songs that can be downloaded from Internet
sites and service providers like Napster, KaZaA and Morpheus free of charge. Today the issue of
intellectual copyright infringement in music has been taken more seriously than ever before, as
large record labels and companies like Sony and EMI struggle to maintain healthy album sales in
the face of online music piracy. In addition, music piracy affects more than just the corporate world
it affects the very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first illegal music file provider on the Internet was Napster. This program was the brainchild
of a then 18 year old student named Shawn Fanning and upon its release in 1999, the popularity
of his program grew tremendously with every passing day. Thus it was only a matter of time
before the music industry took notice. By December of that year the Recording Industry
Association of America sued Napster for copyright infringement, stating that ?Napster is about
facilitating piracy, and trying to build a business on the backs of artists and copyright
owners.?(McManus) Although Napster would soon lose the battle to the RIAA in court, many
variants of Napster began popping up, most notably Gnutella and KaZaA, which were file
sharing services that offered more of the same free content. By 2003, the US $14 billion music
industry witnessed a 31% CD sales decline since 2000 and continually blamed illegal file sharing
for their woes. Critics of the music industry say however that ?there are other factors to blame
[for poor CD sales], such as stiff competition for the entertainment dollar from video games and
DVDs, fewer hit songs or artists and the high price of CDs.?(Evangelista) Regardless of the
reasoning however, the ethical issue of pirated music is still prevalent.
On a moral standpoint, record labels view people who collect and share copyrighted music without
paying royalties or compensation to the

To what extent can I determine my own destiny Essays
To what extent can I determine my own destiny? Discuss in the light of theories, ideas and research
encountered in the course.
Do I act as I do through choice or are my actions influenced by factors beyond our control? This
uncertainty has concerned psychologists for decades, consequently giving rise to the Autonomy
versus Determinism debate. By definition, autonomy is the belief that we are free to make
decisions and thus control all of our actions, however determinism contradicts this view by
suggesting that all of our actions are entirely determined by the external and internal forces
operating on them. Nowadays It is now commonly documented by most psychologists that it is a
combination of both autonomy and determinism that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Stevens3 1996:169) The Langer and Rodin study (1976) (Lalljee 1996:121) based in an
American nursing home shows the difference between two groups of elderly residents, those that
were given the chance to be autonomous were found that being in control made a critical
difference to their well being and longevity. However the residents that believed their well being
was reliant on the nursing staff were found to be less happy and their mortality rate was higher.
This highlights the fact that to have a happy life no matter what age we need to be autonomous.
Those in favour of determinism believe that behaviour is the product of internal or external forces
over which we have no control. As a result, human behaviour is arranged and therefore determined.
This idea is similar to that of scientific methods e.g. experiments. In an experiment we have the
ability to manipulate the variables, according to determinism all behaviour is causal, by this we
sense that the determinist feels we have the opportunity of controlling all human behaviour.
Supporting the determinist view is the biological approach, according to biological social
psychologists our behaviour is solely determined by our biological systems, they argue that we are
genetically determined. Cox and Klinger 1988 (Toates 1996:55)

name in Salem throw away his good name after claiming to be an adulterer? It is in my good
opinion that Abigail Williams seeks vengeance on John Proctor for taking her innocence.
Elizabeth lied to protect her husband, just like any women would lie to protect her family life,
children and husband. Even someone like Goody Proctor, who has never told a lie before. This
is a natural lie to tell. I beg of you, your Honour, to reconsider your decision on sending Elizabeth
to the jailhouse. You must ensure that this trial is fair. Telling Proctor and Abigail to stand with
their backs facing Elizabeth was not a fair way to question her. You are a noble judge. We saw
John Proctor break down in court and this is not the behavior of a man who is trying to deceive
or undermine the court or the trial. Your Excellency, Proctor is a well respected farmer and his
wife has no mark upon her name. They are good souls who don t deserve to be hanged due to the
lies of Abigail Williams and the girls. Abigail is hell bent on seeking vengeance on Proctor.

Contextual Summary
Mrs. Gruwell goes to Mrs. Campbell, the department chair, to ask if she could use the school s
book on Anne Frank. Mrs. Campbell refuses because she thinks that the students are not capable of
reading Anne Frank. Mrs. Gruwell asks if she can borrow Romeo and Juliet, because it is a gang
story that students can relate to. Mrs. Campbell refuses because she does not trust the students with
books, because students have been damaging the school textbooks. Mrs. Gruwell explains she
wants the students to be interested in learning, but Mrs. Campbell answers, You can t make
someone want an education (Freedom Writers, 38:53). Mrs. Gruwell goes to her co worker for help.

Mrs. Gruwell tries to unite the classroom by playing a game. The Line Game allowed everyone in
the classroom to see that they have something in common. The students are enemies with each
other and they are in the war; however, the Line Game allowed the students to realize that they have
something in common. The Line Game breaks down the wall between the races in the classroom.
In this scene, Mrs. Gruwell practices the Third Dimension, which is equity pedagogy (Banks, 1999,
p. 2). She has incorporated the community culture of students in the classroom. In addition, she has
modified her teaching to facilitate a safe learning environment in the classroom. Specifically, she
used a gang culture, which is a common culture of the whole class, to unite the students to promote
a positive learning environment. The teacher needed a way to connect each and every student in the
class to unite them; therefore, the teacher modified the lesson to include a game. With a game, the
students were able to discover a commonality of cultures among them. Another example of equity
pedagogy in the scene is the use of alternative assessment method. Mrs. Gruwell uses journal as the

Interpreting The Purpose Of The Constitution In The UK
Unlike many nations across the globe, Britain lacks a codified or a written constitution. Britain
relies on unwritten court judgements, conventions and acts of parliament as the constitution.
According to Packman, the constitution is a system of beliefs and laws that a nation uses to
govern. However, most people across the globe do not consider the UK to have a constitution. Yet,
in reality, UK does have a constitution the only difference is that its constitution is found in an
abstract form consisting of diverse conventions and practices laws, which have evolved over the
years. In fact, the key milestone of UK constitution entails the 1689 Bill of rights. Thus, in the
comparative sense, UK has an unmodified Constitution remembering the constitutional laws in the
UK are derived from Acts of Parliament, law reports, or court judgments. In essence, the unwritten
status of the British constitution gives it its distinguishing feature of the constitution.
Importance of constitutional principles
In regard to British Constitution, the aspect of separation of power is not supreme. For instance, the
three arms of the government are founded under the article of United States Constitution, which
give these arms distinct and essential power roles within the federal government. Basically, the key
objective of having three arms of government is to allow separation of power hence avoid
concentration of power to one branch of government. The U.S. Constitution states that the powers of

to foster relationships among the SBUs and work with each other to reduce costs (Geoff Percival,

When investigated, it is evident that Jesus s cursing the tree was not an act of impulsiveness or

European Aggressor In The 1000 s
Throughout most of the 1000 s, Europe was the creator of science and art movements, and the
pioneer of the industrial revolution, leading the world into a new modern age. Europe s
advancements in the past centuries certainly had great benefits for the world, but Europe was not
perfect; in fact, it was far from it. Although Europewas one of the worlds greatest advancers, It was
also one of the worlds greatest aggressors. Europe was responsible for the transatlantic slave trade,
colonizing nearly the entirety of Africa, and the two World Wars. So this dilema begs the question,
was Europe the visionary innovator, or the harmful aggressor in the 1000 s?
Many may argue that Europe s involvement in slavery and the building of colonial empires
makes them the sole aggressor of the entirety of the 1000 s. People who say this do have a good
point. Europe was heavily involved in the slave trade, according to The Abolition Project,
Estimates, based on records of voyages in the archives of port customs and maritime insurance
records, put the total number of African slaves transported by European traders, to at least 12
million people (The Abolition Project). Undoubtedly, slavery is one of the most evil actions in
history, so obviously Europe is an aggressor for its major involvement in it. Europe not only
participated in the slave trade, It was the biggest proponents of it; it was responsible for the
displacement of at least 12 million people. Europe, knowing full well how the slaves would be
treated, took them away from their homeland to suffer racial injustice, beatings, and forced labor.

Our Culture is Defined by those Around Us
Culture is defined to the group of people which learned behavior that has already gave the
instruction from previous generation through next generation by imitation and language (Adler
1983 citing Barnouw 1963). Also Schein (1990) describes that culture is a lesson that a group has
been studied and solved the problem for internal integration and learnt to survive from external
environment for over period of time. For example, behavior, cognition and emotion processes and
in the deepest level which is included perception, language and thought processes such as attitudes
and feelings. For most of organizations nowadays have to face with an increasing of a diversity of
employees which are multicultural employees especially for multinational corporation(MNC)
(Fitzsimmons 2013). To deal with different cultures and nationalities, the companies and managers
have to learn and understand their employees such as common language, knowledge sharing and
performance (Lauring Selmer 2011) then see how multicultural individuals can help and contribute
the organizations (Fitzsimmons, Miska Stahl 2011) and set the policies or principles for

development company s in the process. However, while this is the case, a small firm from the
United Kingdom has managed to find a foothold in the industry.
After years in the doldrums, the British online casino game development scene has seen a bit of a

Wilde Case Summary
Wilde V. City of Normal The new ordinance regulating short term rentals violates Ima Liddle
Wilde right to due process, and right of contract protected under the 14th Amendment. Normal,
Illinois s city ordinance makes the historic 3 story Victorian property valueless, and resulted in a
taking of her property violating the taking clause of the 5th amendment, while also violating her
right to contract with fellow citizen. In Lucas V. South Carolina costal council of 1992, Justice

v. Parrish states The constitution does not recognize an absolute and uncontrollable liberty
(Parrish 301) and that laws are required to safe guard the health, safety, and welfare of the people.
If the city can show a clear benefits the ordinance will have on the community, then liberty of
contract argument is not applicable to this case. In Muller v. Oregon (1908) in the opinion Justice
Brewer states that the state can restrict a person s right of contract without violating the 14th
amendment provisions, and again mentioning that contracts are not absolute and extending to all
contracts . (Oregon 298) In this case restrictions are only placed on rentals shorter than 30 days
and requires the owner to reside in the house. Even with the limitations placed on Ms. Wilde the
property still has value, such as selling the property or renting it longer than 30 days at a time.
Justice Blackmun in dissenting in the Lucas case, states the petitioner still can enjoy other
attributes of ownership, such as the right to exclude others (Lucas 1237). Because the property still
has economic productivity, albeit with some regulation the ordinance does not invoke a taking. In
Nolan v. California Coastal Commission (1987) the Essential Nexus was established, meaning a

Pricing Decisions
1.Pricing decisions
Factors to consider when setting prices All profit organizations and many non profit organizations
must set prices on their products or services. Simply defined, price is the amount of money
charged for a product or service. More broadly, price is the sum of the values consumers exchange
for the benefits of having or using the product or service.
A company s pricing decisions are affected both by internal company factors and by external
environmental factors. These factors are shown in Figure 1. Internal factors include the company s
marketing objectives, marketing mix strategy, costs, and organization. External factors include the
nature of the market and demand, competition, and other environmental factors. ... Show more

We consider ourselves the low cost producers in this industry. Considering that we are a company
with lower costs, we have decided that we can set lower prices that result in greater sales and profits.
We watch our costs carefully. We consider that if it costs our company more than competitors to
produce and sell our product, we will have to charge a higher price or make less profit, and try not
to put it at a competitive disadvan¬tage.
External Factors Affecting Pricing Decisions
The Market and Demand Costs set the lower limits of prices, while the market and demand set the
upper limit. Both consumer and industrial buyers balance the price of a product or service against
the benefits of owning it. Before setting the final price for our product we had to understand the
relationship between the price and the demand for our product. At the beginning we shall see the
people s reaction toward the Lazzzzerlight Product Machine.
Other External Factors
When setting the final price, we must also consider other factors in our external environment. For
example, economic conditions can have a strong impact on the results of our company s pricing
strategies. Economic factors such as inflation, boom or recession, and interest rates affect pricing
decisions because they affect both the costs of producing a product and consumer perceptions of
the product s price and value.

financial position. This is also supported through investigating the trends and variations in the
financial statements and looking at a competitive and economic analysis. A SWOT analysis was
also conducted to focus on the internal and external characteristics of AT T and an industry

Government Vs Government Intervention
The papers of history books, is full of the names of artists who died in poverty, and who weren t
cherished for what they had created. For many years, it has been argued that one of the ways in
which this can be prevented, is the government intervention. Although, it has been amply mentioned
from time to time, by differnet scholars, that governments should not intervene in people s lives,
and the government s stepping in is extenuated in just a scant of situations, but sometimes, there isn
t an alternative way. Although it may seem irrelevant to Art, consider the case of the Steam Engine,
which many believe is invented by James Watt. The truth is this equipment was invented about one
hundred years before Mr. Watt even fathomed such an idea; It was a French physician, who first
came up with the idea of a steam engine, but the government didn t support him, and as a result, his
invention had gone to waste. So the government support is nothing to be neglected in the case of
inventions and technologies.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consider a musician, who is forced to contribute a song to a presidential campaign, the result could
not be interpreted as a pure art, but at the best case, it would be a commercial entity. Undoubtedly,
the probability of these cases to happen, is much more in a country which is ruled by a totalitarian
government. So, when lauding and encouraging the need for the governments to support artists, we
must not forget which kind of government are we talking about. In summary, there are pros and
cons in pushing the argument for the government intervention to support artists. We should
consider both sides : the case of an artist, who is living in extreme pauperization, and his
creativeness is deteriorating; and the case in which an artist s work is being jeopradized by a
totalitarian government that is dictating what should be created and what should

Challenges Facing A Growing Food Shortage And Food Waste...
Most of us, when presented with a foreign meal usually ask the question well, what s in it?
Underlying this question is the notion integrated into all of us that we have a right to know. Now,
we are not always talking about legal rights when we ask. Most times, we simply think the other
person has a moral obligation to tell us. Inarguably, human life is fickle. Physically, we are one of
the weakest beings on this Earth. Hence, this question, simple as it may seem, is crucial in ensuring
our survival. Today, we face the simultaneous challenges of a growing foodshortage and food waste
problem. Considering the nature, characteristics, and source of these problems, it appears that a
deontological perspective can best remedy the situation... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, ironically, even in these bountiful countries, there exists a significant part of the
population that lack access to food. If the manufacturers asked themselves, could I live on the
food I am marketing at the rate I am pushing for consumption? and aligned their own interests
with the interests of everyone else, the quality of food in the market would not be compromised.
Similarly, this logic would also solve the problem of food waste because the person disposing of a
ton of unconsumed food would ask himself what if everyone in the world disposed of a ton of
food today?
Prior attempts from utilitarianism to try to calculate and predict which decisions will yield the
best results has obviously not worked. The result of the cost benefit analysis upon which
governments have decided policies have proven to be inaccurate due to the existence of the food
crisis. The wellness of its people is the fundamental duty of a government. If the government truly
made decisions based solely on its duty to the people and withdrew itself from adverse and
unnecessary politics, we would not find ourselves in this crisis. Large firms spend millions on
lobbying to nurture and fuel their unethical practices. They also spurt out threats of laying off
thousands of workers if their grasp on the market is not sustained. However, on the other hand, the
subsidies continually received by these large firms are costing the people their

When Worlds Collide Essay
In the film When Worlds Collide , the answer to the question How did the American Indigenous
populations impact Spain (and vice versa)? was focused on the changes in wealth, class systems,
and the Spanish conquistadors intentions. The first topic covered in the film is how today s
America and today s world are heavily influenced by the culture, heritage, and history of the Mestizo
race and their Spanish counterparts. The video then explains that the Mestizo race came into
existence after the Spaniards had children with the Natives of the New World . Next, the film
highlights the differences between the cultures of the Spanish and the native indigenous peoples of
Mesoamerica. One of the differences between the two cultures was that the Mesoamericans had a

New York s Bestseller The Other Wes Moore Essay
New York s bestseller The other Wes Moore, by Wes Moore is a story of how two kids with
similar backgrounds including similar names ended up with different outcomes in life. The
author Wes Moore ended with a degree from Oxford University and an internship at the white
house while the other Wes More got sentenced to life in prison for the murder of an off duty
police officer. The book goes into detail on why they ended up so differently and it turns out that
it could have been a number of life changing events and choices. However Malcolm Gladwell who
wrote the book Outliers, would argue that it may have been a result of external factors that would
contribute to the success of the author and the eventual fall of the other Wes Moore. For the
purpose of this paper we will address the author as either Moore or the author Wes Moore and the
other Wes Moore as Weston. Even though both Wes Moore s started off with similar backgrounds,
the difference between their mothers parenting styles and the difference in educational opportunity

their sons. Although both mothers struggle to keep their sons out of trouble, their reaction and

A disaster is generally defined as an event in which illness or injuries surpass resource capabilities

The Controversy Over The Ethics Of Stem Cell Research Essay
The Controversy of Embryonic Stem Cell Research THE 210/04December 2, 2012
There is a debate over the ethics of stem cell research and many people on opposing sides of the
issue are not aware of all aspects. In order to intelligently debate the legal and ethical issues
regarding stem cell research, one must understand what stem cells are, the applications currently
available, and the impact of the research. It is also important to understand the distinction between
adult and embryonic stem cells before exploring their uses and impacts Stem cells possess unique
properties that make them different from all other cells in the body. Most cells do not have the
ability to replicate where stem cells have the potential to multiply indefinitely. Before they have a
specific function in the body, stem cells are essentially blank slates. There are two basic types of
stem cells, which have different empirical properties and ethical implications.
Researchers successfully attained embryonic stem cells from the embryos of mice in 1981, which
led to the discovery of this process in human beings in 1998 (National Institutes of Health, 2001).
Embryonic stem cells are derived from an in vitro embryo between five days and seven weeks.
Regenerative medicine can benefit greatly from the characteristics of embryonic stem cells. This
process enables damaged organs and tissues to heal themselves with the help of implanted stem
cells matching the organ (Hunziker, 2010, p. 1). There are two traits

South African Constitutional Court Of The Republic Of...
South Africa developed its constitution in 1996, the new constitution highlighted the country s
movement from an apartheid ridden and supremacist society to a seemingly fairer more diverse
government.
Many arguments regarding socio economic rights have aimed to disregard the notion that these
rights are incapable of legal enforcement. The argument that socio economic rights cannot be
judicially implemented because to define these rights may prove difficult arguably is fallacious.
In this essay I will use selected cases by the South African Constitutional Court of the Republic of
South Africa demonstrate that judicial enforcement of socio economic rights may not benefit the
vulnerable in society as much as it appears to.
In order to identify its success (or failure), we must first establish what is meant by the term
vulnerable in society. It remains uncertain to determine in a clear expression as to what a
vulnerable person or group is. In general, it is accepted that a vulnerable person is part of the
populace, which is often subject to prejudice and discrimination and deemed to require special
attention or help from governmental agencies in order to be protected against any mis treatment.
Such segregation or abuse could be in view of race, disability, sex or factors such as poverty and
social class.

part in guaranteeing successful security and interpretation for

The adherence to the xylitol toothpaste was likely to have been altered during this time. Assuming
that each child brushed with a quarter of a gram of toothpaste, they would have received less than
four thousandths of a gram of the effective amount of xylitol exposure daily. That is one twentieth
of the amount of xylitol that the children received during the trial. A 14 percent elevation was
previously noted when brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste as opposed to brushing once
with the same fluoride toothpaste in a 2003 Cochrane review evaluating the fraction of prevented
caries. This suggests that the difference isn t significant in the type of toothpaste used whether it be
fluoride or xylitol but predominately how often high caries risk children brush their teeth.
Xylitol toothpaste is less economically feasible, with the cost of the xylitol toothpaste elevated
considerably higher than the average fluoride toothpaste. The commercially available xylitol
toothpaste used in the current study costs three times as much per ounce as over the counter
fluoride toothpastes (Chi, D. L, 2004 p. 6). Because of the greater concentration of xylitol that is

Beatrice, Benedick, Dogberry, Don Pedro, and Claudio, provide multiple examples of what a
tragicomedy has to offer. Shakespeare s dramaMuch Ado About Nothingis both a comedy and a
tragedy due to Dogberry s monologue, Hero s exposure of her unfaithfulness, and Beatrice and
Benedick s love.
For instance, Dogberry s monologue about Conrad s claim he is an ass provides a situation of
comedy. Dogberry, a constable who watches over the city of Messina, was the first to discover...

After the two future lovers were tricked into falling for each other, Hero was accused of her
unfaithfulness to Claudio by being around another man. Beatrice later said to Benedick Kill
Claudio...Not for the wide world. You kill me to deny it. Farewell (Act 4, Scene 1, 74). In her
eyes, Beatrice believes that Hero would do no such thing as cheat on her future husband, and that
Claudio must be murdered for his treason of calling her out in front of the crowd on the most
important day of her life. The idea of a possible death to a main character created a sense of panic
to readers and the thought of lifetime friends fighting to the death seems extremely inhumane.
On the other hand, once the conflict is resolved and Don John is found guilty of the entire
scheme, Beatrice and Benedick begin to joke about their love with each other and try to hide it
from the outside world by stating Do not you love me? Troth no, no more than reason... (Act 5,
Scene 4, 101). Hero then pulls out Beatrice s halting sonnet (Act 5, Scene 4, 101) that is writ in
my cousin s name (Act 5, Scene 4, 101), and Benedick and Beatrice s love is proven to the
world. By mixing some tragic and comedic flares into one scene, the understanding of the work is
brought out and imagery is present to paint a vivid image in any reader s

Cold War Proxy War Essay
Due to how many countries in Africa were used in Cold War proxy wars, an important question is,
Which of the superpowers had a larger influence on Africa? And while the U.S.A. certainly did have
significant sway in Asia, mainly Korea and Vietnam, and in the Middle East in Afghanistan,
relatively, not much was spent, both financially and in a militaristic sense, in Africa. Similarly, the
U.S.S.R. was also spending the majority of their resources in Europeand Asia.
However, when examining where Cuba stood in Africa s proxy wars, one can see that a large
majority of communist and socialist factions in Africa were given aid by Cuba. Therefore, was
Cuba the most influential power in Africa during the Cold War? Or were the U.S.S.R and U.S.A....

MPLA troops became operatives and guerillas in Namibia, aiding in the eventual separation of
Namibia from South African control.
Additionally, in the Congo, Cuba gave support to anti capitalist and colonialist factions in the four
years Congo Civil War or Congo Crisis. During the period, Che Guevara travelled to the Congo as
a military advisor, and trained Congolese guerillas to fight against the ruling forces of Joseph
Mobutu.
Smaller expeditions were sent out by Cuba. In Ethiopia, Cuba followed the Soviet Union and other
communist powers in support of the Derg government in the Ogaden War between Somalia and
Ethiopia. One thousand five hundred Cuban troops were deployed to Israel in the Yom Kippur War
in support of Arab forces.
Importantly, much of the support Cuba sent to Africa during the Cold War was humanitarian aid.
Engineers were sent to build hospitals and schools, where Cuban teachers and doctors were sent.
Roughly thirty thousand African students travelled to Cuba to study at Cuban universities.
Therefore, Cuba became seen not only as a military benefactor in Africa, but also an altruistic
supporter of African

The Choral Poem In The Alchemist
The Choral Poem called The Alchemist has a comparable theme as the book The Alchemist because
they both reflect the importance of taking something simple and transform it not to something
better although the best version of itself. Its to say as Turning lead into gold. To further explanation,
it means to Transforms something useless into something indispensable. In addition to that, When
an individuals strive to become better than they were, everything around them becomes better too.
The theme of the poem and the book encourage humanity that If humanity recognize that they could
be better then become better, don t settle. Don t be the same. Be better.
Furthermore,In the book, Santiago reflects the theme in many different ways. One way in which
Santiago reflects the theme is when he meets the crystal merchant and helped him in the shop so
much that it became the best crystal shop ever. According to the Merchant on page 54, Santiago
has changed this life and himself to the best version of themselves. For instance, in the book, it
says, Crystal Merchant: I ve had this shop for thirty years. I know good crystal from bad, and
everything else there is to know about crystal. I know its dimensions and how it behaves. If we
serve tea in the crystal, the shop is going to expand. And then I ll have to change my way of life.
/ Boy: Well, isn t that good? / Crystal Merchant: I m already used to the way things are. Before
you came, I was thinking about how much time I had wasted in the same place, while my friends
had moved on, and either went bankrupt or did better than they had before. It made me very
depressed. Now, I can see that it hasn t been too bad. The shop is exactly the size I always wanted
it to be. I don t want to change anything, because I don t know how to deal with change. I m
used to the way I am. The boy didn t know what to say. The old man continued, You have been a
real blessing to me. Today, I understand something I didn t see before: every blessing ignored
becomes a curse. I don t want anything else in life. But you are forcing me to look at wealth and
horizons I have never known. Now that I have seen them, and now that I see how immense my
possibilities are, I m going to feel worse than I

Hoefler Co.
For this research assignment, I looked up a company called Hoefler Co. This company designs
and publishes fonts for a huge variety of companies and some of the most famous brands out there
toay. Some fonts are created on a custom basis for editorial, institutional, and corporate clients
while others are designed for immediate sale to the public. They work with brand leaders in every
sector, developing original typefaces for print, web, and mobile environments, and licensing fonts
from our library of more than one thousand designs.
Designer Jonathan Hoefler founded the company in 1989 as The Hoefler Type Foundry

With the original design created as a serif font, this image shows the array of different styles one
font can change into, including ornamental text design. The special character traits of some of
the letters gives this typeface a formal and traditional style with an artistic flair of more
ornamental design. I chose this font as a representation because it holds many similar
characteristics to Times New Roman, which almost everyone is familiar with and/or has used.
The letter Q caught my attention, as well as the individual design of the numbers to accompany
the letters as shown by the 16 towards the middle of the image. Hoefler Co. is consistently
creating typefaces we use on a regular basis, and may not realize come from such a large
company. I feel that typeface is one of the least recognized areas of design, which is ironic because
without font styles, graphic design would almost be non existent. So much of what is
communicated is through letters or images that are inspired by letters. Logos, word marks,
symbols, and font all make up the world of graphic design, and without companies like Hoefler Co.
some of the most recognizable companies would have a very different

A Harbinger Of Danger And Discontent
A Harbinger of Danger and Discontent We collect the content and other information you provide

they are protected and maintain a sense of privacy. Citizens misplace their trust in social media and
technology, and divulge their personal information in ignorance of the repercussions that may arise.
Users say the advances in technology and social media will not affect their privacy; however, it is
proven that these advances can be a harbinger of both danger and discontent. Our nation is built
upon its foundation from the United States Constitution and its Bill of Rights. Included within this
governing document is the Fourth Amendment, the laws and guidelines that gives the people the
right to privacy. Within in this amendment, it is stated that the right of the people to be secure in
their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be
violated (Magruder s American Government 772). Despite the fact that these right are clearly
stated and profound, recent advances in the scopes of technology and social media have violated
the people s privacy by deceiving them into thinking they are protected. It is shown, that one of the
most prominent sources that prove a danger toward privacy, is through social media, specifically
Facebook. This site alone

Health And The Healthiness Of Their Organisations
Work stress is recognised worldwide as a major challenge to workers health and the healthiness
of their organisations (ILO 1986; 1992). Workers who are pushed are additionally more prone to
be morbid, inadequately spurred, less gainful and less protected at work. Their associations are
less inclined to be effective in a focused business sector. Stress can be realized by pressures at
home and at work. Businesses can t more often than not shield labourers from strain emerging
outside of work, yet they can shield them from the strain that emerges through work. Stress at work
can be a genuine issue to the association and in addition to its labour force. Great administration
and great work association are the best types of stress... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Managers would be very much encouraged to acclimate themselves with the pertinent law in

pressure or test and stress and at times it is utilized to reason terrible administration practice.
The pressure at the work environment is unavoidable because of the requests of the
contemporary work environment. Pressure seen as worthy by an individual may even keep
workers ready, stirred, ready to work and learn, contingent upon the accessible assets and
individual attributes. Be that as it may, when that pressure gets to be over the top or generally
unmanageable it prompts stress. Stress can harm your labourers wellbeing and your business
execution. A sound occupation is prone to be one where the pressure on staff are fitting in
connection with their capacities and assets, to the measure of control they have over their work,
and to the bolster they get from individuals who matter to them. As health is not merely the
absence of disease or infirmity but a positive state of complete physical, mental and social well

Justice in The Republic by Plato Essay
Justice in The Republic by Plato
In Plato s The Republic, justice is depicted as a major part in a perfect society. Justice is said to
breed a good society, whereas injustice will breed a bad one. Plato defines justice in dialogue as
keeping what is properly one s own and doing one s own job. (Pg. 146) Under the rules set for
this perfect society, people are to practice the one profession at which they perform best. This
profession also corresponds to a certain social class. Under no circumstances can one change this
profession. Along with a set occupation, Plato has also determined that the perfect community
would regulate what children (and the community) are taught, and to what the children will be
exposed. In Plato s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Suppose a person is exposed to certain injustices that others commit. Plato feels that this exposure
will plant a sort of seed inside a person s head. Thus leading him or her to commit an injustice of
the same kind, or simply increasing the chance that a person will commit a similar act.
However, there is a huge hypocrisy (or disadvantage) within this theory. With Plato s definition of
justice, a person should keep what is his or her own. Some would say that person s history is also
their own. People have a right to know their history, and the truths about their community. Plato
wants to take away passages in stories, lines within songs, and make all characters in plays perfect.
This, in itself, is an injustice to a community. The stories, folklores, and fables of a community are
meant to teach. In American society, children learn not to tell lies from the Boy Who Cried Wolf.
The character in the story was not perfect and committed a bad act; however, children learn from
his mistake. In Plato s perfect society, he takes away what the community rightfully owns.
When adopting Plato s suggested way of life, one must be prepared to sacrifice his or her past
(neglecting his definition of justice). This crucial injustice is needed for the good of Plato s
suggested community. Similarly, in the book Ishmael, the author tells a story about post war
Germany. In this story is a scenario where the Nazi s had won and wiped out all other

Frame Relay and Leased Lines Essay
Frame Relay and Leased Lines
In networking there are many options in having data transferred from one location to another. Two
of which include frame relay and leased lines. Frame relay is a communication method that
transfers data by dividing information into packets and sending them over a virtual network. Frame
relay is a difficult process to understand and to accomplish. Leased lines, however, is the permanent
connection between two stations. Leased lines are simpler to understand and do not take a lot of
effort to achieve.
According to Computer Networks, frame relay came into existence to overcome the complex
protocols caused by slow telephone lines, and expensive computers. Today, telephone lines are fast
and inexpensive, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Switched virtual circuits also can provide bandwidth on demand meaning that when the line is at
its peak carrying information more bandwidth can be made available. Also switched virtual
circuits allow charges for connection to be made only for what the customer uses, unlike leased
lines where you have to pay a flat rate (828 829).
In the May 1999 issue of Computerworld , a trading company decided to change its networking
architecture. DCH (Da Chong Hong), in the past, used a multiple leased line architecture
consisting of over 50 separate lines (See Figure 1). Figure 1 proves the fact that when transferring
data between multiple sites, frame relay decreases the amount of lines that need to be leased. DCH
knew it had to change its architecture to keep up with data rate technological advances. DCH
decided to switch to a networking architecture that consisted of ATM and frame relay. This venture
saved DCH over $129,000 per year. ATM is another form of a packet switching data communication
method.
One problem with transferring information over a frame relay network is the fact at times the
network can become congested. The LAN Times Encyclopedia of Networking reports the fact that
when a frame relay network becomes congested, frames are arbitrarily discarded . The end nodes
are responsible for retransmitting the message frames or either they can be discarded permanently
if the customer wants them to (387). Frame relay also

Airline Deregulation Act Of 1978 Signed
INTRODUCTION
Airline deregulation was the process of removing the government imposed regulations on the entry
of new airlines as well the airline fare limiting the competition and growth of the airline industry. In
the United States, airline deregulation mainly refers to the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 signed
by President Carter. President Carter signed the Act, but the act was proposed initially during
Nixon s administration, and carried through Ford administration. The airlines industry was growing
dramatically during 1960s and mid 1970s. Due to the steady increase in air travel, and strict
regulations imposed by the Civil Aeronautics Board, the industry faced three major difficulties lack
of free and stable market, high ticket prices leading to poor productivity, and rising labor and fuel
costs. Airlines have adopted many new strategies ever since the industry has been deregulated. The
path since the deregulation has been challenging, as the airlines have faced various hurdles such as
terrorism, war, recession, high fuel prices over the years impacting the economic structure of the
United States. These challenges have raised the question concerning whether the deregulation
should be considered or even reversed.
I will start with providing a short history about the deregulation process of the airline industry, in
the next section. The history will assist in understanding the free market that exists today. In the
third section, I will explain the key factors behind

Influence Of American Culture On Consumers
In my opinion, I feel that consumers can get too much of a product. American culture of
consumerism appears to be quite addictive. Shopping can become a drug for some. For example,
with every new clearance rack at any given department store or buying multiple items because
you think there is a big savings when using coupons. Consumers become fueled with the need to
fill a void within their daily lives. In recent years I have notice the change of coupon use
compared to many years ago has become very addictive for some to the point that it is not saving
money. Don t get me wrong, I consider myself to be one who loves discounts and a good savings. I
often hear people say you can never have too much of one product especially if you purchased it

Designing A Computer Controlled Machine
Robots, like any computer controlled machine, can be programmed in their movements. But the
production of control data in the form of coded machine instructions requires programming skills as
well as an understanding of robotics concepts such as kinematics, which lie outside most architects
domain of expertise. To address this problem, the custom robotprogramming library YOUR, which
aims at making robot control intuitively accessible to students, has been implemented. Based on
this, a toolkit of visual programming components for GrasshopperTM, allowing students to directly
assemble graphical components for the control of their robotic fabrication sequences, was
developed. The technologies for controlling robot arms are especially... Show more content on

Robotic fabrication and computational design augment each other in several ways. In addition to
the direct materialization of digitally conceived designs, the physical working model provides
students with a differentiated and sensual feedback on their design, whereby they can immediately
engage with its constructive and structural aspects. As part of an iterative process, these insights
can then be re integrated into the computational design strategy.
Architectural design practice will be increasingly mediated by digital technology in the future.
Digital fabrication technology allows architects to conceive designs both digitally and physically,
and may empower them to take a more active role in the materialization and construction process.
Nested voids
The robotic fabrication process is based on the integration of non standard element prefabrication
and robotic assembly. The model s walls and floors are laser cut out of cardboard sheets, which are
placed on a custom designed feeder system (left). From there the robot picks the elements (centre),
applies glue and places them directly on the model (right).
Mesh towers
For the final tower model, foam blocks are placed on a specially designed feeder. The robot cuts
each of them differently, optimised to transfer the loads and shaped to accommodate various
functions. This

  • 2. Guantanamo Bay and Human Rights Violations by the United... IntroductionGuantanamo Bay, Cuba is originally a naval base that was once used to house detention facilities for Haitian and Cuban refugees fleeing to the United States. It was also used as a refueling station for Navy ships. It was then converted into a high level detention facility to house enemy troops captured in the War on Terror campaign by Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfield. It has three main camps that house the prisoners. These prisoners of war were later referred to as enemy combatants. They were excluded from the prisoner of war statutes of the Geneva Convention because of their involvement in a foreign terrorist organization and therefore earning themselves the title of terrorists. The Guantanamo Bay Detention Center served as the perfect location to send these terrorists. It allowed the United States to strip them of any due process or protection that is provided by US law. Due to its location, being in foreign territory they are only subjected to military law. They are close enough for them to be monitored without interference of intentional agencies or international oversight. Furthermore, the US Government is holding these men without due process because they are deemed too dangerous to be released into the public because of their associations with terrorist organizations and possession of valuable information relating to National Security such as location of key members of a terrorist groups, whereabouts. However, the United States cannot release those ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Similarities Between Catholic Immigrants And Chinese... Since the first arrival of Europeans in America and their mass genocide of its native people, America s inhabitants have been primarily immigrants and their descendants. However, despite this fact, Americans have a history of mistreating immigrants. Although they are two distinctly different groups of people with distinctly different cultures the similarities between the treatment of Catholic and Chinese immigrants in America are immense and bear only a few differences. Both groups were discriminated against and forced to work horrible jobs for unfair wages, however, only immigrants from China were banned from permanently immigrating the country completely. Chinese and Catholic immigrants were discriminated against when they arrived in America and were pressured to assimilate into the mainstream American culture by losing their own. Catholic immigrants were particularly hated because many people and their ancestors had come to America to flee religious persecution from the Catholic Church. Although immigrants... However, they were willing to do anything to achieve potential class movement, so they were often exploited and forced to work jobs with horrible conditions and unfair wages. Resentment grew toward immigrants in America because they were willing to work for less money to help their families. Catholic immigrants were considered invaders of the work and Chinese immigrants were seen as job stealers. In reality, however, most immigrants were working jobs that no one else was willing to do. Chinese immigrants faced high death and injury potential as they worked on railroads and in coal mines, and Catholic immigrants did mind numbing assembly line work in sweatshops and factories. These jobs were not highly sought after and only desperation would force someone into working these jobs. Immigrants work was essential to society, but they were treated as unwanted ... • 7. The Characteristics Of A Detective Fiction Detective Fiction Essay A detective fiction is a literary genre in form of a short story or novel that deals with crimes, usually murder and detectives are involved to seek out justice for the victims. The detectives involved in detective fictions can either be private, amateur, or police detectives. There are also other characters like the suspects and the side kicks. An amateur detective is a detective who has no license to operate as a private investigator neither is he/she a member of the police force. These detectives have a different profession, but are not trained in criminal investigation. They have a passion in crime and delivering justice to the society. On the other hand, a private detective also known as hard boiled is a male or female detective trained in criminal investigation. Dealing with crime is his/her profession, therefore, has good physical attributes and uses the gun efficiently. The two detectives differ in two ways; first, they differ in financial status, secondly they differ on how they use violence in their investigations. The first difference between an amateur detective and a private detective is their financial statuses. An amateur detective is an individual who has another job or rather a ... Another example is the short story Trouble is My Business by Phillip Marlowe. This story presents a needy private detective. The Growing Problem of Music Piracy Essay The Growing Problem of Music Piracy At the turn of the millenium, the music industry has been faced with an unforeseen phenomenon that has affected its very foundation mass scale music piracy. The decline of CD sales in the past three years have been blamed on the availability of songs that can be downloaded from Internet sites and service providers like Napster, KaZaA and Morpheus free of charge. Today the issue of intellectual copyright infringement in music has been taken more seriously than ever before, as large record labels and companies like Sony and EMI struggle to maintain healthy album sales in the face of online music piracy. In addition, music piracy affects more than just the corporate world it affects the very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first illegal music file provider on the Internet was Napster. This program was the brainchild of a then 18 year old student named Shawn Fanning and upon its release in 1999, the popularity of his program grew tremendously with every passing day. Thus it was only a matter of time before the music industry took notice. By December of that year the Recording Industry Association of America sued Napster for copyright infringement, stating that ?Napster is about facilitating piracy, and trying to build a business on the backs of artists and copyright owners.?(McManus) Although Napster would soon lose the battle to the RIAA in court, many variants of Napster began popping up, most notably Gnutella and KaZaA, which were file sharing services that offered more of the same free content. By 2003, the US $14 billion music industry witnessed a 31% CD sales decline since 2000 and continually blamed illegal file sharing for their woes. Critics of the music industry say however that ?there are other factors to blame [for poor CD sales], such as stiff competition for the entertainment dollar from video games and DVDs, fewer hit songs or artists and the high price of CDs.?(Evangelista) Regardless of the reasoning however, the ethical issue of pirated music is still prevalent. • 9. To what extent can I determine my own destiny Essays To what extent can I determine my own destiny? Discuss in the light of theories, ideas and research encountered in the course. Do I act as I do through choice or are my actions influenced by factors beyond our control? This uncertainty has concerned psychologists for decades, consequently giving rise to the Autonomy versus Determinism debate. By definition, autonomy is the belief that we are free to make decisions and thus control all of our actions, however determinism contradicts this view by suggesting that all of our actions are entirely determined by the external and internal forces operating on them. Nowadays It is now commonly documented by most psychologists that it is a combination of both autonomy and determinism that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Stevens3 1996:169) The Langer and Rodin study (1976) (Lalljee 1996:121) based in an American nursing home shows the difference between two groups of elderly residents, those that were given the chance to be autonomous were found that being in control made a critical difference to their well being and longevity. However the residents that believed their well being was reliant on the nursing staff were found to be less happy and their mortality rate was higher. This highlights the fact that to have a happy life no matter what age we need to be autonomous. Those in favour of determinism believe that behaviour is the product of internal or external forces over which we have no control. As a result, human behaviour is arranged and therefore determined. This idea is similar to that of scientific methods e.g. experiments. In an experiment we have the ability to manipulate the variables, according to determinism all behaviour is causal, by this we sense that the determinist feels we have the opportunity of controlling all human behaviour. Supporting the determinist view is the biological approach, according to biological social psychologists our behaviour is solely determined by our biological systems, they argue that we are genetically determined. Why the man with the purest name in Salem throw away his good name after claiming to be an adulterer? It is in my good opinion that Abigail Williams seeks vengeance on John Proctor for taking her innocence. Elizabeth lied to protect her husband, just like any women would lie to protect her family life, children and husband. Even someone like Goody Proctor, who has never told a lie before. This is a natural lie to tell. I beg of you, your Honour, to reconsider your decision on sending Elizabeth to the jailhouse. You must ensure that this trial is fair. Telling Proctor and Abigail to stand with their backs facing Elizabeth was not a fair way to question her. You are a noble judge. We saw John Proctor break down in court and this is not the behavior of a man who is trying to deceive or undermine the court or the trial. Your Excellency, Proctor is a well respected farmer and his wife has no mark upon her name. They are good souls who don t deserve to be hanged due to the lies of Abigail Williams and the girls. The Line Game breaks down the wall between the races in the classroom. In this scene, Mrs. Gruwell practices the Third Dimension, which is equity pedagogy (Banks, 1999, p. 2). She has incorporated the community culture of students in the classroom. In addition, she has modified her teaching to facilitate a safe learning environment in the classroom. The teacher needed a way to connect each and every student in the class to unite them; therefore, the teacher modified the lesson to include a game. • 12. Interpreting The Purpose Of The Constitution In The UK Unlike many nations across the globe, Britain lacks a codified or a written constitution. Britain relies on unwritten court judgements, conventions and acts of parliament as the constitution. According to Packman, the constitution is a system of beliefs and laws that a nation uses to govern. However, most people across the globe do not consider the UK to have a constitution. Yet, in reality, UK does have a constitution the only difference is that its constitution is found in an abstract form consisting of diverse conventions and practices laws, which have evolved over the years. In fact, the key milestone of UK constitution entails the 1689 Bill of rights. Thus, in the comparative sense, UK has an unmodified Constitution remembering the constitutional laws in the UK are derived from Acts of Parliament, law reports, or court judgments. In essence, the unwritten status of the British constitution gives it its distinguishing feature of the constitution. Importance of constitutional principles In regard to British Constitution, the aspect of separation of power is not supreme. For instance, the three arms of the government are founded under the article of United States Constitution, which give these arms distinct and essential power roles within the federal government. Basically, the key objective of having three arms of government is to allow separation of power hence avoid concentration of power to one branch of government. Europe s advancements in the past centuries certainly had great benefits for the world, but Europe was not perfect; in fact, it was far from it. Although Europewas one of the worlds greatest advancers, It was also one of the worlds greatest aggressors. Europe was responsible for the transatlantic slave trade, colonizing nearly the entirety of Africa, and the two World Wars. So this dilema begs the question, was Europe the visionary innovator, or the harmful aggressor in the 1000 s? Many may argue that Europe s involvement in slavery and the building of colonial empires makes them the sole aggressor of the entirety of the 1000 s. People who say this do have a good point. Europe was heavily involved in the slave trade, according to The Abolition Project, Estimates, based on records of voyages in the archives of port customs and maritime insurance records, put the total number of African slaves transported by European traders, to at least 12 million people (The Abolition Project). Undoubtedly, slavery is one of the most evil actions in history, so obviously Europe is an aggressor for its major involvement in it. For many years, it has been argued that one of the ways in which this can be prevented, is the government intervention. Although, it has been amply mentioned from time to time, by differnet scholars, that governments should not intervene in people s lives, and the government s stepping in is extenuated in just a scant of situations, but sometimes, there isn t an alternative way. Although it may seem irrelevant to Art, consider the case of the Steam Engine, which many believe is invented by James Watt. The truth is this equipment was invented about one hundred years before Mr. Watt even fathomed such an idea; It was a French physician, who first came up with the idea of a steam engine, but the government didn t support him, and as a result, his invention had gone to waste. So, when lauding and encouraging the need for the governments to support artists, we must not forget which kind of government are we talking about. The Controversy Over The Ethics Of Stem Cell Research Essay The Controversy of Embryonic Stem Cell Research THE 210/04December 2, 2012 There is a debate over the ethics of stem cell research and many people on opposing sides of the issue are not aware of all aspects. In order to intelligently debate the legal and ethical issues regarding stem cell research, one must understand what stem cells are, the applications currently available, and the impact of the research. It is also important to understand the distinction between adult and embryonic stem cells before exploring their uses and impacts Stem cells possess unique properties that make them different from all other cells in the body. Most cells do not have the ability to replicate where stem cells have the potential to multiply indefinitely. Before they have a specific function in the body, stem cells are essentially blank slates. There are two basic types of stem cells, which have different empirical properties and ethical implications. Researchers successfully attained embryonic stem cells from the embryos of mice in 1981, which led to the discovery of this process in human beings in 1998 (National Institutes of Health, 2001). Embryonic stem cells are derived from an in vitro embryo between five days and seven weeks. Regenerative medicine can benefit greatly from the characteristics of embryonic stem cells. The Xylitol Toothpaste Trial For Children Xylitol Toothpaste Trial for Children Early childhood caries (ECC) is on the rise among U.S. preschool aged children, especially in preschoolers from low income households. (Chi, D.L., Tut, O.K., Milgrom, 2014, p.1) The Xylitol Toothpaste Trial was conducted in four Head Start classrooms located on the Republic of the Marshall Islands on Majuro Atoll. The Washington Institutional Review Board granted the Ministry of Health approval to commence the trial as requested. The adherence to the xylitol toothpaste was likely to have been altered during this time. Assuming that each child brushed with a quarter of a gram of toothpaste, they would have received less than four thousandths of a gram of the effective amount of xylitol exposure daily. That is one twentieth of the amount of xylitol that the children received during the trial. A 14 percent elevation was previously noted when brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste as opposed to brushing once with the same fluoride toothpaste in a 2003 Cochrane review evaluating the fraction of prevented caries. This suggests that the difference isn t significant in the type of toothpaste used whether it be fluoride or xylitol but predominately how often high caries risk children brush their teeth. Xylitol toothpaste is less economically feasible, with the cost of the xylitol toothpaste elevated considerably higher than the average fluoride toothpaste. The commercially available xylitol toothpaste used in the current study costs three times as much per ounce as over the counter fluoride toothpastes (Chi, D. L, 2004 p. 6). Because of the greater concentration of xylitol that is required to make the toothpaste effective elevating the cost above fluoride toothpaste, it is less practical for parents to incorporate xylitol toothpaste in their children s daily oral care ... Justice is said to breed a good society, whereas injustice will breed a bad one. Plato defines justice in dialogue as keeping what is properly one s own and doing one s own job. (Pg. 146) Under the rules set for this perfect society, people are to practice the one profession at which they perform best. This profession also corresponds to a certain social class. Under no circumstances can one change this profession. Thus leading him or her to commit an injustice of the same kind, or simply increasing the chance that a person will commit a similar act. However, there is a huge hypocrisy (or disadvantage) within this theory. With Plato s definition of justice, a person should keep what is his or her own. Some would say that person s history is also their own. People have a right to know their history, and the truths about their community. Plato wants to take away passages in stories, lines within songs, and make all characters in plays perfect. This, in itself, is an injustice to a community. The stories, folklores, and fables of a community are meant to teach. In American society, children learn not to tell lies from the Boy Who Cried Wolf. The character in the story was not perfect and committed a bad act; however, children learn from his mistake. In Plato s perfect society, he takes away what the community rightfully owns. When adopting Plato s suggested way of life, one must be prepared to sacrifice his or her past (neglecting his definition of justice). In the May 1999 issue of Computerworld , a trading company decided to change its networking architecture. DCH (Da Chong Hong), in the past, used a multiple leased line architecture consisting of over 50 separate lines (See Figure 1). Figure 1 proves the fact that when transferring data between multiple sites, frame relay decreases the amount of lines that need to be leased. This venture saved DCH over $129,000 per year. ATM is another form of a packet switching data communication method.
