Who Invented Gunpowder
Gunpowder was one of the most revolutionary inventions in warfare. It shifted many different aspects
of war including weapons, battlefield tactics and fortifications. Even though gunpowder and
gunpowder weaponry originated from China it was the Europeans who utilized and invested the most
into gunpowder technology. This investment in weaponry is what made Europeans more powerful
than the rest of the world. By the 15th, 16th and 17th century the Europeans had surpassed the
Chinese in the construction of firearms. One of the reasons why the Europeans drove this innovation
was because of the amount of wars that were fought in Europe during this time period. More wars
meant more investments in weapons and tactics. Thus gunpowder brought about a military revolution
which changed the system in which wars were fought. From the beginnings of gunpowder in China to

I will argue that the development of gunpowder and gunpowder weapons brought about a military
revolution in Europe which changed the way wars were fought. The areas of change in warfare I will
be focusing on are ground warfare, naval warfare and siege warfare. I will also look at the beginnings
of gunpowder in China as it is important to understand on the basis on which the Europeans were
expanding on.
The specifics on when and how gunpowder was invented is greatly debated among historians. The
different constituents of gunpowder were known as far back as the 1st Century CE. Charcoal was used
for heating while sulphur and saltpeter were mentioned in texts dating from the 1st century BCE.
Some historians suggest that taoist alchemist during the third century CE knew of the explosive
property of gunpowder but this can t be proven. According to Wang Ling gunpowder was

Slavery Was The Main Cause Of The Civil War
From the formation of America to 1860, the people in this country were divided. This division was a
result of location and personal sentiments. Peace could not continue in a country filled with quarrels
that affected the common American. There is a common misconception that the American Civil War
was fought only over slavery, when in fact there were several other reasons for why the War Between
the States was fought. This being said slavery, the elect ion of Abraham Lincoln and the North and
South dividing are all causes of the civil war. Slavery Slavery was one of the main causes of the civil
war. The North thought slavery was wrong, but the southern and western states disagreed. Slavery was

North and South Divide The north and south divide is what caused the two sides in the war, southern
states believed slavery was right and northern states did not. The northern states wanted to abolish
slavery and the south was not letting the happen. Incidents in the 1820s such as the Nullification Crisis
and so on, is what began the controversy between the north and south. The controversy had begun to
get so big that southerners began to protest , immigrants had begun to flock to the northern areas
which was frightening the southern states. Northern politicians had tried to compromise and ensure the
new states in the union were free soil, which made matters worse and slave owners felt they had the
right to own slaves on their property then. The southern way of life was not being kept to its standards
and people were not happy, the southerners comfort system of living and its cultural influence was

The Writer s Duty Of William Faulkner s Nobel Prize...
Addie Champlin
English II AP
Dr. Payne
September 9 2016
The Writer s Duty In William Faulkner s Nobel Prize acceptance speech, he speaks about the true
purpose of writing and the importance of genuinely putting your heart into your work. He discusses
how the only way writing can truly be valuable is if the author is dedicated to showing the authentic
love the human spirit holds and what that love is capable of accomplishing. A good piece of writing
will show both strength and vulnerability and will not be written for fame or recognition. It will be
written for the sake of creating and spreading a message that is important to the author. In their
memoirs, An American Childhood and The Road from Coorain, Annie Dillard and Jill Ker Conway,
both feel very strongly about their purpose for writing. Conway tends to express her reasons for
writing explicitly, while Dillard chooses to do it more implicitly.
In An American Childhood by Annie Dillard, she clearly demonstrates the meaning of the novel in one
passage that reads, Children wake up and find themselves here, discover themselves to have been here
all along; is this sad? They wake like sleepwalkers, in full stride; they wake like people brought back
from cardiac arrest or from drowning: in medias res, surrounded by familiar people and objects,
equipped with a hundred skills. They know the neighborhood, they can read and write English, they
are old hands at the commonplace mysteries, and yet they feel themselves to have just

Tjx Security Breach Essay
The TJX companies breach has been labeled the largest data breach in the history of security breach
and the ultimate wake up call for corporations (Dash, 2007). TJX is the parent company of chains such
as TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Homegoods, and a host of retail stores across the US and Canada. In January
2007, it was discovered that hackers stole as many as 200 million customer records due to a failed
security system by TJX which resulted in a $4.8 billion dollars worth of damages (Swann, 2007). It is
said that the breach occurred because they did not have any security measures in place to protect
consumer s data such as their debit cards, credit cards, checking account information, and driver s
license numbers. Reports identified three major ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, researchers at Darmstadt Technical University in Germany have demonstrated that a WEP key
can be broken in less than a minute (Berg, Freeman, Schneider, 2008). More important, WEP does not
satisfy industry standards that require the use of the much stronger WPA (Wi Fi Protected Access)
protocol (Berg, Freeman, Schneider, 2008). First, they broke into the store s network and stole
employees usernames and password, which they were able to gained access to the TJX main database
at the corporate headquarters and use those credentials to create their own accounts within the
employee database. Once they gain entry into the corporate network, they were able to breach security
and gather credit card numbers, and any customer information they wanted. The consumer
information was compromised for approximately 18 before TJX became aware of what had been
happening. The TJX data storage practices also appear to have violated industry standards. Reports
indicate that the company was storing the full track contents scanned from each customer s card
(Swann, 2007). Additionally, customer records seem to have contained the card validation code (CVC)
number and the personal identification numbers (PIN) associated with the customer cards. PCI Data

Origins of the N-Word Essay
The words Negro, nigger, and nigga have always been a sensitive topic, yet it is a topic that needs to
be addressed in light of the more common use of its vernacular. One word is used to describe a color,
while the others are used to define a people. It s very clear to many the negative connotation these
words carry, but where did these words come from? Furthermore, is there a difference between the
word nigger and nigga; and why is it that African Americans now use the word nigga to degrade each
other in today s society? These words, in spite of their spelling, still holds the same degrading power
as it did during the time of slavery, and they are still spoken out of cruelty and ignorance, but who is to
blame? Can one still blame the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Europeans no longer used the word to describe a color, but used it to describe a people. No matter
what the origin, this word was used as a weapon to destroy and kill the mind and spirit of a race, and
has become the self fulfilling prophecy for many African Americans today. So many people have
forgotten or either do not realize the destruction behind this racial slur; that it has simply become
another by word with a forgotten history. Ignorance is the state of being uneducated, unaware, or
uniformed. There is an old saying, What you don t know, won t hurt you, but I contend that what you
don t know can stifle you from moving ahead. There are so many young African Americans walking
in ignorance to the history of their race. For example, when I was growing up, my attentive parents
often took opportunities to teach me about and encouraged me not to sit on the back of a public
transportation bus. Their ideology came from the idea that there were many who fought for, were
imprisoned, and even died for my right to sit anywhere on a public bus. However, I consistently
watched as my African American friends immediately flocked to the back of a bus. I used to mentally
ask myself, Do they not know their history?

Plaintiff filed this motion for summary judgment on November 17, 2014. The Court heard oral
argument on December 15, 2014, and took the matter under submission. For the reasons discussed
below, the Court grants the motion. FACTS The material facts are undisputed.1 In September 2008,
Dr. Kyle Wong hired Top Construction as a general contractor to build his custom designed home for
$558,000. Construction began soon after. Top (through its corporate representative Nelson Chu) then
applied for a general commercial liability insurance policy from Navigators Insurance Co.2 On its

scope of misrepresentations: Top and Chu lied about several important facets of their business its size,

Milk Lab Report
Dependency of curd mass on four different types of milk (Non Fat, Low Fat, Reduced Fat, Whole)
using lemon juice
Purpose
The purpose of this experiment was to determine if lemon juice would cause the different fat levels in
milk to affect the curd mass.
Background Information
The major components of milk are water, fat, proteins, lactose, carbohydrates, and minerals
(dairyprocessinghandbook.com) with the main proteins in milk being casein and whey. When the
casein protein separates from the whey, fat, and lactose in the milk, the product is micellar casein.
These micelles have a negative charge, are not soluble in water and moreover, repel each other, which
keeps them suspended in the milk solution.
Milk has a natural pH level that resides just ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Watada s Obligation
Though I cannot definitively say why Watada refused to deploy to Iraq, I can give ideas he possibly
contemplated in his mind. Watada likely viewed the deployment as illegal because he thought the US
did not have ad bellum issues which warranted war. Iraq had not violated our nation s territorial
integrity; they did invade Kuwait, but they had been pushed back onto their territory. We invaded Iraq
out of suspicion that they were constructing weapons of mass destruction, but this was purely
suspicion. Suspicion does not warrant a just cause because we are not attacked in any sense. Despite
this, our government viewed it as a just cause because of Iraq s past hostility, and this was
unacceptable to the young officer. Watada felt that it was his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

By allowing Naval Officers to decide for themselves if they can participate in some conflict, the Navy
will have a good indication of who is committed to the war effort. If they were to refuse the orders,
officers should still be expected to carry out their role obligations as officers in the military. I believe a
good example of this is when Watada requested to be deployed to Afghanistan instead of Iraq. It is
clear in this case that he was not trying to escape his commitments, and all officers should still be held
to this standard. It is possible for everyone who joins the military to contribute to our nation s defense,
it is possible to deploy officers in a manner so that they do not enter a conflict believing their actions

Nineteen Thirty Eight Regardless of the despondency at the prospect of war with Germany generated
throughout the country at large, the Vyses annual show opened as scheduled at Walker s Galleries on
Wednesday, 30th November 1938. It was the Vyses eleventh successive exhibition and although they
did not envisage such a far reaching event, it proved to be their final joint exhibition. Writing in

crises may threaten us, and vogues may change and novelties may date, but Pottery that is

imagination, only a few of us can materialise our fantasies. The Vyses, ever optimistic, exhibited one

control of the atmosphere within the kiln chamber produced such subtle glazes as the blues and

happy accidents produce such glazes. No photograph, however detailed, can illustrate the rosy purples
that suffused the delicate blue Chün glazes (Fig. 149 p.186). Acceding to popular demand, the Vyses

Types Of Conventional Pid Controller
Conventional PID controller is one of the most widely used controllers in industry, it have remained,
by far; the most commonly used in practically all industrial feedback control applications. The main
reason is its relatively simple structure, which can be easily understood and implemented in practice.
On the other hand the recent advancement in fractional calculus has introduced applications of
fractional order calculus in control theory. One of the prime applications of fractional calculus is
fractional order PID controller and it has received a considerable attention in academic studies and in
industrial applications. Fractional order PID controller is an advancement of classical integer order
PID controller. In many cases fractional order PID controller has outperformed classical integer order
PID controller. In the field of automatic control, the fractional order controllers would lead to more
precise and robust control performances. Although it is reasonably true that the fractional order
models require the FOPID controllers to achieve the best performance, in most cases the researchers
consider the fractional order controllers applied to regular linear or non linear dynamics to enhance the
system control performances.
In this chapter, the design of fractional order PID controller is considered in order to minimize certain
performance indices such as integral square error. An artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is used to
tune the parameters of FOPID controller,

Invisible Man Ellison
Over the summer I read a book called Invisible Man by Ralph ellison, not by H.G. Wells, which was
THE Invisible Man . Before even picking the book I narrowed it Down to three, which was Invisible
Man , The Sun Also Rises , and The Color Purple . The way I made my decision on what book to read
was by title. I know most say don t judge a book by its cover ,in this case title, but I had just had a
feeling that Invisible Man was a good one. My hypothesis about what the book was about was that it
was syfy and that he actually had be invisible and he was out looking for a cure.
My definition of invisible is to obviously be unseen or unnoticed by others, but in the book there was
more to definition. The narrator described his invisibility was only because others choose to ignore
him , even throughout the book the narrator remains nameless. The word invisible to the narrator is
neither good or bad, he explains that while he does have his own opinions he however feels like he has

though black holes can be dangerous, they can also be helpful. Stellar black holes are the result of a

A stellar black hole is formed when a gianormous star collapses upon itself. When a stellar black hole

Police Discrimination And Discrimination
Most middle class whites have no idea what it feels like to be subjected to police who are routinely
suspicious, rude, belligerent, and brutal (Benjamin Spock) . In the United States and around the world
different people face discrimination, inequality, and racism because of the color of their skin instead of
content of their character. However, the shocking thing is that the violence can be seen in the
protectors of Peace and Liberty, the Police. They as humans also hold a sense of bias and racism and
act accordingly to their own personal desire instead of by the law. African Americans have cower and
be weary around the police because the police are rude and belligerent. When someone of a certain
race are faced with inequality and discrimination there will be protest and when protest do not work it
becomes riots. The thing that sparked the Watts Riots was when a police officer attacks a black male
and his mother for drinking and driving. In a New York Times article it states, When another officer
began hitting Mr. Frye and his mother, who had rushed to the scene, onlookers started throwing stones
and bottles . This shows that there was fault in Mr. Frye for drinking and drinking but he should have
been fine or arrested instead of being abused and assaulted. The conflicts with the police has been

The International Relations Theory That Best
The international relations theory that best explains Operation Provide Comfort would be the
constructivist theory. However, Turkey s involvement in the operation may also be explained through
subaltern realism. The fact that the nations that comprised the coalition, save for Turkey, conducting
Operation Provide Comfort went through the official channel of the UN shows that the intention was
to act within the norms of the international community for conducting humanitarian interventions.
Had the US decided to act unilaterally, without permission from the other states involved or the UN, it
strongly indicate that the US self interests superseded those of the global community. Furthermore, the
coalition of western powers respected Turkey s sovereignty by keeping the refugees at the border and
providing aid in refugee camps there. Respecting a nations sovereignty, or giving reasonable cause for
violating it, is an essential portion of constructivism as it indicates that states respect the artificially
implemented restraints on themselves that they have set up. Beyond the evidence that strongly
suggests that OPC was conducted in the sphere of constructivism, there is little evidence that would
support any other international relations theory. In a constructivists perspective, the mission devolved
from an international system based operation to a more realists military intervention when it became
Operation Norther Watch (to compliment Operation Southern Watch.) This idea is

F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby
Gatsby s Great American Dream The American Dream in simple terms is the essence of Americanism;
it is the belief that social mobility, prosperity, and financial success are attainable by hard work
regardless of social class and nationality. The American Dream exemplifies what every immigrant
imagines as they walk through Ellis Island or cross the border from Mexico. It is the ethos of America,
the defining image of the average upper middle class family man. This idea of prosperity begins as far
back as the founders of the United States. Benjamin Franklin, one of the most famous Framers in

James Gatz transformation to Jay Gatsby is the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen year old boy would
be likely to invent, and to this conception he was faithful to the end (Fitzgerald 98). Benjamin
Franklin created thirteen virtues that he personally followed that aided his quest for perfection. Of
these thirteen virtues, Gatsby perfected Cleanliness and Order to the fullest extent. Gatsby s practice
of elocution and ability to schedule his business is one example of these specific virtues. Jay Gatsby
often seems to be reminded of his past, but his goal is not to even cover up his past. This goal of
Gatsby s is the beginning of his downfall in the quest towards the perfection of his own American
Dream. The virtues that Gatsby fulfils in some circumstances and does not fulfil in others include
Silence, Temperance, and Sincerity. Franklin s idea of Sincerity is that one should use no hurtful
deceit; think innocently and justly, and, if you speak, speak accordingly (Franklin). Gatsby achieves
this virtue whenever he is in the company of Daisy Buchanan, his love interest of many years. There is
a certain irony to their relationship as Daisy is extremely insincere or grateful for the life she has led.
Even though Gatsby s entire adult life is a lie, there is a sense of youthful love from a man who has
outgrown his youthful pleasures. Daisy Buchanan is related to another of these virtues, Silence.

by the way he talks to other people. Carson is focused on seeing only one way to solve a problem.

I Want To Become A Neonatal Nurse
In my life I have thought about doing or being a lot of different things. But I think that I have made up
my mind and when I get older I want to be a Neonatal Nurse. The reason as to why I want to become a
baby nurse isn t really exciting. I want to be a neonatal nurse because it sounds really interesting and it
sounds like something I would actually enjoy doing for the rest of my life. Since I really want to
become a nurse I would have to create a couple habits in order to obtain my goal. The first habit I
would have to make is learning to listen to people better. I struggle with this because my brain is

Water is probably my biggest fear. Not drinking water but giant body of water, like the ocean or a
lake. For some odd reason I always think I am going to drown every time I get in any type of body of
water. I think that if I am going to try and become less scared of water I need to learn how to do some
stuff first. First, I probably need to learn to swim. I know how to Doggy Paddle but I don t think that
counts when it comes to swimming Atlantic or Pacific. Another thing I need to do is try not to worry
as much when I go out on a boat or just go swimming. I get so stressed to the point that I can t even
have fun because I am so worried of drowning. I plan to reach my goals by doing a couple of things.
How I plan on learning to swim is I m going swim more in the summer in a swimming pool. I would
go to a swimming class but I went to one when I was four, five, and six and it didn t get me anywhere.
The second thing that I am going to do is learn how to relax. Learning how to relax is going to be
harder than learning to swim because I stress over the smallest

The Benefits Of Sweatshops
There are many views with the problem of utilizing sweatshops in developing economies. Many insist
that utilizing sweatshops in developing economies composes exploitation. In certain circumstances,
this may be true, but not all. It is an ongoing controversy of demolishing sweatshops and changing the
laws of labor. Many anti sweatshop activist supports the idea of demolishing sweatshops. Activist
commonly focus on work conditions and low wages causing them to be ill formed of the economy as a

countries benefit from sweatshops. Sweatshops should not be demolished because the employees are

For example, many U.S jobs offer shift differential for employers who work the graveyard shifts . Of
course, some may prefer sleeping at night but they take the alternative for the extra income. It is not
out of the ordinary for workers in these developing countries to tolerate poorer working conditions for
higher pay. It is important for activist to include the economy of these developing countries when
considering the demolishment of sweatshops. Not only are the employees benefited with income, their
economies gain and grow. Many of developing countries gain economic growth due to sweatshops. In
the article Beyond Sweatshops: Employment, Labor Market Security and Global Inequality by James
Heitz he states that access to the markets of affluent countries has become a key component of growth
strategies around the globe ( Heitz p 224 ). A key component to developing an economy is trade.
Additionally, businesses with increasing services brings forth growth to the economy. Sweatshops
allow manufacturing companies to trade goods, as well as bring forth new businesses. Through
developed countries such as the United States developing countries gain technical knowledge,

cases of exploiting sweatshop wages reported in sources and compared those earnings to the living

Bishop Orders His Tomb at Saint Praxed s Church and The Love Song of Alfred J. Prufrock
The span of time from the Victorian age of Literature to the Modernism of the 20th century wrought
many changes in poetry style and literary thinking. While both eras contained elements of self
scrutiny, the various forms and reasoning behind such thinking were vastly different. The Victorian
age, with it s new industrialization of society, brought to poetry and literature the fictional character,
seeing the world from another s eyes. It was also a time in which Victorian authors and intellectuals
found a way to reassert religious ideas (Longman, p. 1790). Society was questioning the ideals of
religion, yet people wanted to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Do I live, am I dead? (13) reveals the uncertainty of the bishops thoughts as he contemplates death,
wondering if others see that he deserves such a fine tomb. In Eliot s poem, Prufrock poses his own
questioning, Do I dare? (38) and Do I dare/ disturb the universe? (45 46) which reflects his own
personal conflict as he struggles to decide on whether he should take action, any action in his own life.
Although these monologues contain the same elements of self questioning, they are vastly different,
both in style and in tone. The bishop of Browning s poem sees himself as a great man, How I earned
the prize! (33). He orders this stately tomb of lapis (102) and antique black basalt (53 54), a tomb so
rich such as a king or queen might be deserving of. This gives us a clear picture that he thinks highly
of himself, and he wants others to see the same, even after he is dead, the tomb much like a shrine of
great importance.
In contrast, Alfred J. Prufrock of Eliot s poem, feels no such greatness in himself. He is filled with vast
uncertainty so that every small decision is wrought with conflict, and as such, he never does anything.
I have measured out my life with coffee spoons (51) shows us that his life was characterized by small
measures, having done no great work. I am no prophet (84) and Am an attendant lord, one that will do

I was raised in the Catholic faith and didn t enjoy attending church. When I was young, I found it

I was already sobbing, which wasn t surprising to me, because I tend to be an emotional person. We
woke up Saturday and went to a few sessions of worship and seminars. Following dinner was mass
and Adoration. Mass was very good since the priest used real world situations and connected the
gospel to our everyday lives. I am not sure what made Saturday nights Adoration so powerful, but it
was the night I felt the hand of Jesus Christ.
The priest took the monstrance off of the altar and proceeded to carry it throughout the fieldhouse. I
started to cry and the person next to me grabbed my hand in support. We then stood with our arms
held high praising the Lord with the hundreds of other people there. My knees began to feel week so I

Story Of An Hour Analysis
In her short story The Story of an Hour, Kate Chopin s brilliant use of words immediately captures the
reader s attention. There is no introduction of characters and no build up to this story. In the opening
sentence, Chopin introduces the readers to Louise Mallard and informs them of her heart condition.
Little do the readers know, this will be a huge factor at the end of the story. The readers also learn that
Louise s husband has died in a railroad accident. With the knowledge of these two events, Chopin
takes the reader on a journey with the widowed Louise Mallard in the last hour of her life with all the
conflicting emotions that go along with it.
Richards and Josephine think they must break the news of Brently s death to Louise as gently as
possible. Josephine tells her in broken sentences; veiled hints that revealed in half concealing.
However, Louise does not hear this news with the same emotions as most women would at the loss of
a loved one. Initially, She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister s arms. When the
storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone. This is the normal and expected
reaction. Suddenly, the mood of the story changes as Louise looks out an open window and observes
the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life. The delicious breath of rain was in the
air . Even Louise seemed to be confused as to what was happening. Now her bosom rose and fell
tumultuously. She was beginning to

The Novel The Green Mile
King s novel The Green Mile, was a depiction of horror and imagery, or as Harold Bloom stated,
visually oriented scenarios. He teased the senses and gave an inevitable emotional twist at the end.
This story follows a special inmate possessed some unworldly powers that changed people s fate,
when he deemed worthy. John Coffey, last name like the drink, only not spelled the same way, (King
16) plays the hand of God in this story, when he saved a life, cured the incurable, punished the guilty,
and changed the life of Paul Edgecomb inevitably. The arrival of John Coffey in fall of 1932 was a
hot, normal day in the E Block cells (King 5). The guards saw this man as not much of a talker, but he
often cried himself to sleep. He was sentenced there for the rape and murder of two little girls; a crime
he did not commit. John Coffey was a large black man in both height and mass, but there was an
oddity sensed about this man. Paul Edgecomb had been acquainted with many inmates over his years,
but this is the first one he offered his hand to (King 19). Even now I don t know why, he stated (King
19). Coffey, a simple man, who talked very little, touched the guards hearts very quickly in his stay.
From the start, it seemed Coffey knew he was going to be killed for the crime he did not commit. [He
was] doomed and [maybe] even perhaps eager to die and put all of the pain and misery behind him (D
Ammassa). He had a hand for healing, even though this man knew that life was

The Art Of War By Sun Tzu
Originally written in Chinese in 514 B.C., The Art of War by Sun Tzu outlines basic, yet crucial
principles and factors in military strategy that Sun Tzu claims would ensure victory in a war. There are
several English translations of Sun Tzu s work, each having a slightly different interpretation due to
the meticulous task of finding exact terms from Chinese to English, but some have been reviewed as
reliable in conveying the true message of Sun Tzu. This includes the importance of considering
economic, political, and geographical factors, objective comparisons of significant aspects between
both opposing sides, handling one s army and officers, and most importantly, the use of deception.

Napoleon s army was in a vulnerable position especially since the Austrian and Russian forces united
and considered to attack him in spring when Napoleon s army would have diminished from their
unpreparedness for winter. After realizing that his army would be at their weakest if he waited to fight

accomplish his goal in deceiving the Allies, Napoleon sent General Savary to their camp pretending to
seek a peace negotiation . This gave the Allies the illusion that Napoleon felt weak and desperate for a
truce. While the Russian commander in chief, General Kutsov, was confident that waiting to attack in
spring was the most advantageous strategy for them, the Tsar was fooled by Napoleon s ploy and over

realizing the disadvantageous position he was in and how it would make it extremely difficult to win

The Power Of Corruption And Absolutism In Movie Analysis...
Corruption and absolutism are ruling France. The movie well describes France as a big corrupted state
where the poverty is on such a bad level, therefore, the people of France are starting to realize that the
king, Louis XVI, should be taken down. The idea of to getting France to change to better is visualized
through the main characters which are not trying to help just France but also the French people.
However, the nobles are making it impossible for anybody, who is not on their side, to even get a
chance to see the king and the noble women have the power of corruption which is shown in many
ways throughout the movie.
The main character, which in the movie is called the Engineer, is a noble from the southwest part of
France. He may not be as rich as the nobles that live in Versailles, but he is honest, straight forward,
compassionate, and pure hearted. He is willing to take action, he understands the poverty, and he is
seeking the progress of France. His family owns a property in the southwest France that is surrounded
by swamps. The swamps are a very good place for mosquitoes to reproduce and, with the poverty
being on such a bad level, the people are starting to get sick and they even die. The fever that the
mosquitoes are transmitting is killing Engineer s people so he is going to do everything he can to stop
it. The Engineer s plan is to go to Versailles and talk to the king about drying out the swamps so his

What Is Self Discipline Essay
We already know that self discipline is important, but do we really need it?
We know about success tools, and we familiarize ourselves with many useful resources that lead us to
success, so why do we need self discipline?
We all have goals for many areas of our lives. Some of us want successful relationships, some like to
get more money, others want simply happiness in their lives and others seek better health with less
weight. These are common goals, and we sometimes fail or succeed in achieving them. The general
question is: Why we don t achieve those goals? Why we don t become successful in these goals?
The general answer is: Lack of self discipline.
Success needs time. It does not happen at once. What you do today will determine the results in your
future. If you change your present, you change your future. If you eat a lot of pizzas and delicious
food today, you will gain weight, and this will show in your future weight. If you spend more money
than what you earn today, you will have less money in the future.
Present steps determine future results.
Self discipline takes place in your present which will lead to your future. ... Show more content on

We also know that successful persons became successful just by following these laws. Many experts
studied successful people for many years and wrote many rich useful books about them. One top
expert in this field, Brian Tracy, claims that one main skill that you need to achieve success is the
resource of self discipline. You may know many laws of success, and you may have a map for your
goals, but this map will not work if you do not exercise self control for your goals. It is a fact that 97%
of people do not write their goals, and this by itself is a major obstacle to success, but simply by
writing the goals is not enough unless it is combined with self discipline. It is your practical map for
success. It is your actual pragmatic steps that lead you to translating your goals into

be a one size fit all administration method. Indeed, the authors emphasize the need for managers to
practice consistently in regard to managerial skills. Otherwise, even the most experienced manager is
likely to fail in the administration of an organization if they neglect the need to practice managerial

To begin with, I learned that once one assumes the position of a manager, one does not have a
significant amount of time to interact with junior staff members or employees in general. To illustrate
this, most managers could walk into the lobby of an organization, and only make eye contact with an
employee, gesture at them, or use body language to express their opinions to the employees. Having
established, this the book enabled me to relate the book s content with my workplace experience.
Indeed, the chief executive officer of our organization hardly has scripted engagement schedules with
most of the employees at our workplace. As a result, we only run into him at the elevator, on the

which the brief moment when a manager interacts with employees is significant in the establishment
of a relationship with employees of the organization that manager heads. In other words, a prudent and
effective manager ought to utilize the brief, unscheduled interaction with employees to foster
productive relationships (Sparrow et al. 74). Such a brief interaction could be used to demonstrate

Examples Of Pathos In The First Lady Michelle Obama
The First Lady Michelle Obama has delivered a speech on October 13, 2016. Mrs. Obama speech was
about the opportunities young people have and the challenges young females face. Michelle Obama is
also giving the speech to persuade people not to vote for Trump because of how disrespectful and
disregarding he is to women. Michelle obama used different rhetorical appeals during her speech.
Michelle used lots of emotions and persuasive language to connect with the audience in front of her.
Pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an
emotional response. For an example Michelle says, Strong men who are truly role models don t need
to put down women to make themselves feel powerful (Obama, 2016). This is an example of pathos
because it is using emotion towards something that is being done to females. She is trying to get men
to stop doing what they are doing to women by using emotion to show how hurtful it actually is. The
emotion she is getting at is pride which men have a lot of. This affects the audience because it s going
to show the men they need to change and being rude to women isn t right. ... Show more content on

from the stem tissue of actively growing trees of P. tremula L.× tremuloides Michx. The cambial
region EST library was prepared from developing xylem tissue, developing and mature phloem and
cambial meristem tissue. The cDNA library was prepared from λgt22a by using Superscript Lambda
System for cDNA synthesis and cloning and packaged into λ particles with the Gigapack II Gold. λ
DNA was isolated form an aliquot of the cDNA library representing 200,000 clones, and the cDNA
inserts were isolated and ligated into pBluescript SK. Bacterial clones of the cambial region from
cDNA library were randomly picked, suspended in 100 µl of Tris/EDTA buffer, lysed and stored at 22

TO STUDY THE OPTICAL LENS OF A HUMAN EYE
Eyes are organs that detect light, and convert it to electro chemical impulses in neurons. The simplest
photoreceptors in conscious vision connect light to movement. In higher organisms the eye is a
complex optical system which collects light from the surrounding environment; regulates its intensity
through a diaphragm; focuses it through an adjustable assembly of lenses to form an image; converts
this image into a set of electrical signals; and transmits these signals to the brain, through complex
neural pathways that connect the eye, via the optic nerve, to the visual cortex and other areas of the
brain. Eyes with resolving power have come in ten fundamentally different ... Show more content on

Possessing detailed hyperspectral color vision, the Mantis shrimp has been reported to have the world
s most complex color vision system.[8] Trilobites, which are now extinct, had unique compound eyes.
They used clear calcite crystals to form the lenses of their eyes. In this, they differ from most other
arthropods, which have soft eyes. The number of lenses in such an eye varied, however: some
trilobites had only one, and some had thousands of lenses in one eye.
In contrast to compound eyes, simple eyes are those that have a single lens. For example, jumping
spiders have a large pair of simple eyes with a narrow field of view, supported by an array of other,
smaller eyes for peripheral vision. Some insect larvae, like caterpillars, have a different type of simple
eye (stemmata) which gives a rough image. Some of the simplest eyes, called ocelli, can be found in
animals like some of the snails, which cannot actually see in the normal sense. They do have
photosensitive cells, but no lens and no other means of projecting an image onto these cells. They can
distinguish between light and dark, but no more. This enables snails to keep out of direct sunlight. In
organisms dwelling near deep sea vents, compound eyes have been secondarily simplified and adapted
to spot the infra red light produced by the hot vents in this way the

The Downfall Of A Dystopian Society
A wise man of his time, Robert Kiyosaki states For something to collapse, not all systems have to shut
down. In most cases, just one system is enough. If just one system, such as the cardiovascular system,
shuts down, death follows . Robert s statement reminds all of a weak dystopian society, fragile enough
to break by one individual. In the dystopian novel, Delirium by Lauren Oliver, major motion picture
Divergent directed by Neil Burger as well as written by Veronica Roth, and published journal How
power corrupts leaders written by Dr. Ronald E. Riggio one sees how a single catalyst leads to the
downfall of the entire society. In all three works, one sees the collapse of a dystopian society is a result
of the triumph of love, the triumph over fear as well as the triumph over the government s own
corrupted power. First of all, in the novel Delirium one can analyze the downfall of a dystopian
civilization due to the triumph of love. Lena Haloway, the protagonist of the novel lives in a world
where the thought and any expression that relates to love is illegal, as well as the entire concept of
loving one another between the opposite sexes is a crime. Lena unknowingly falls in love with an
invalid individual who still needs to go for the curing process for love; Alex. Lena shares her emotions
with him in private, I love you remember they cannot take it! . This is substantial as Lena s inner
feelings are reflective of her love, a rebellious action in her world where love is

Ed Fletcher s Response To The Message
Ed Fletcher was one of the creators of the song The Message by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious
Five, which was released in 1982. This song depicted a horrible scene of blacks living in the ghettos,
which was relevant socially because of the issue of racism that was being addressed, and had been an
issue for a long time. Although the book didn t mention much about his personal life, as a black man it
is obvious why he would want to create a song that addresses racism towards blacks. The Message
takes the approach of describing the awful treatment that people living in the ghettos were receiving,
which was particularly relevant to the artists who created the song, like Ed Fletcher as I just
mentioned, because they were all blacks who had likely experienced this situation. The lyrics used in
the song, such as Got no money to move out, I guess I got no choice, Rats in the front room, roaches
in the back, Junkies in the alley with a baseball bat aid in connecting with the listener s sympathy for
those who experience this, in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This song talks about someone coming home from the war who wasn t treated very well. They lyrics
are very straightforward, depicting a story through words such as, Got in a little hometown jam, so
they put a rifle in my hand; Sent me off to a foreign land to go and kill the yellow man (Google). What
s particularly ironic about this is that a lot of people thought that the song was very patriotic, even
though it s lyrics clearly state the opposite. One reason the book suggested this might have been so
was because people might not have even been listening to the lyrics, hence weakening the impact of
his message. One reason why Springsteen might have created this song was because although he didn
t have this experience himself, a lot of people his age had come home from the war not long before
and received this rough

John Irving’s The Cider House Rules Essay
John Irving s The Cider House Rules
Contemporary society advocates that without love, happiness is impossible. Webester s Dictionary
defines happiness as, a state of well being or contentment. Three types of love which are necessary for
contentment are; familial love, romantic love and friendship. In John Irving s, The Cider House Rules,
Melony s bitterness prevents her from developing these forms of love vital for true happiness. Her
hostility towards others prevents her from developing familial love. Intense animosity and contempt
ruin Melony s romantic relationships. Her bitterness leads to social isolation and the development of
true friendships become impossible.

Like Mrs.Grogan many of the foster parents extend affectionate and loving gestures towards Melony
but are denied an appropriate response. Melony, had several unfortunate experiences in foster homes .
. . Melony had run away from the second and third foster families, alleging that the men in the
families, either fathers or brothers, had taken a sexual interest in her . . . In case number six: the
husband had died of a heart attack shortly after Melony s arrival, and the wife had sent the girl back to
St.Clouds, .
Melony responds to the foster families efforts with viscous abuse. The attitude and hatred she
continually exhibits prevents her from experiencing familial love with the foster families but ruins the
family relationships she is introduced into as well. Melony s bitterness and consequent lack of familial
love will hinder her development of future relationships, ultimately ruin her chances of true happiness.
The relationships within a person s family influence the romantic experiences throughout his/her
lifetime. Romance further satisfies an individual s need for love and belonging. Melony s ongoing
bitterness towards others ruins her romantic relationships.
She experiences few romantic encounters throughout her lifetime, achieving a substandard level of
satisfaction. Melony s first significant romantic relationship is with Homer Wells, and orphan at

Essay on Foxwoods (gambling)
There are many reasons why people gamble and what the advantages and disadvantages are of risking
your bank account on the roll of the dice or the luck of the draw. I originally set out to try and explain
why people gamble, but I realized that gambling is just as much of a business or industry as anything
else. I researched Foxwoods casino, in CT, and the business behind that. From there I will attempt to
explain the cause and effect of gambling. Gambling has made much more sense to me now, and I hope
it will do the same for you.
Foxwoods resort casino, the largest of its kind in North America and most profitable casino in the
world, got its start with the advent of a bingo hall in 1987. At this time the ... Show more content on

All of the success the Pequots have experienced has occurred due to the signing of the Indian Gaming
Regulatory Act (IGRA) on October 17, 1988. This act permitted class III gaming establishments by
American Indian Tribes. The Act stated that Tribal governments were the primary regulators on Indian
Gaming but that the Tribes were required to negotiate with their specific states to conduct a Class III
gambling establishment. This is called the state regulatory layer to state tribal compact agreements.
After the IGRA was passed the Pequots pursued a Malaysian rubber company of Genting International
requesting a loan, which they eventually secured. It was paid off in just seven months. Genting
International also lent the tribe an additional $142 million for expansion and a 610 room hotel and
formed a partnership to build a second 330 room hotel nearby.
The pact between the State of Connecticut and The Mashantucket Pequots gave the Pequots the
exclusive right to operate slot machines. This was amended on April 25, 1994, when the State, the
Mohegan Tribe, and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe singed an agreement that allowed the Mohegan
tribe to operate slot

Big Fish Analysis
Most of the fantasy stories or movies have events in which people transform into creatures or objects
which is known as a metamorphosis, but in magical realism people treat this as normal. For example,
in the movie Big Fish, by Daniel Wallace, the narrator Edward Bloom tells his son s wife a story about
him working at a circus to try and find out more about the love of his life. Edward say in the movie,
On the way to talk to Mr. Calloway I noticed Mr. Calloway s trailer was shaking and a wolf jumps out
and attacks me, as I was on the floor I grabbed a stick and started to play with the wolf. William
continued with, In the morning Mr. Calloway comes out of the woods with the stick I threw in his
mouth. The clowns treated the werewolf as if it were normal and did not pay much attention to Mr.
Calloway s trailer because it happened every full moon. As ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

through supportive therapy such as assisted respiration, and in extreme cases extracorporeal

Even with treatment, HPS has a current mortality rate of approximately 38% (CDC. 2013). The deer
mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) is the most widely dispersed mammal in North America and is the
primary reservoir species for SNV (University of California Agricultural and Natural Resources

scrublands, making this a very ubiquitous species that primarily feed on grains and seeds(University
of California Agricultural and Natural Resources 2013). However deer mice are very adaptable
animals that can change their diets to suit their environment and their diet can consist of invertebrates,
fungi, fruits, and green vegetation. The typical lifespan of deer mice is 2 years and they typically do
not breed during the winter, although in times of abundant food supply and warm temperatures they
may breed year round with liter size varying from three to six young SNV (University of California

deer mice through exchanges of body fluid which may increase with aggressive behaviors amongst

Symbolism Of The Lottery By Shirley Jackson
When incorporated well, symbolism enhances a story s overall impact. Shirley Jackson s short story
The Lottery contains symbolism to affect the readers feelings as well as add interest. The story begins
with the villagers gathering at the square to participate in the lottery. The villagers chat while waiting
for the event to begin. After Mr. Summers comes with a black box, he stirs the pieces of paper in the
box. The narrators describe the lottery as an old ritual that the community continues to respect. Once
Tessie Hutchinson arrives, the lottery starts and the men pick a slip of paper from the black box. Bill
Hutchinson has selected the special slip and Tessie doesn t believe it s fair. The Hutchinson s family
member draw from the box and Tessie ends up with the paper with the black spot. The lottery s
intention is revealed as the community crowds around Tessie, stoning her to death. Jackson constructs
a compelling story with the symbols used, such as the lottery and the stoning.
Jackson uses lotteries, which are generally seen as good things to win, as a representation of the town.
When the story begins, the village seems to be a normal village engaging in a yearly ritual, Nothing
suspicious or deadly with what they are doing so far. As they gather, the men [speak] of planting and
rain, tractors and taxes while the women greeted one another and exchanged bits of gossip (388).
Everything plays out similar to lotteries or a raffle because they have slips of paper to

  • 2. Who Invented Gunpowder Gunpowder was one of the most revolutionary inventions in warfare. It shifted many different aspects of war including weapons, battlefield tactics and fortifications. Even though gunpowder and gunpowder weaponry originated from China it was the Europeans who utilized and invested the most into gunpowder technology. This investment in weaponry is what made Europeans more powerful than the rest of the world. By the 15th, 16th and 17th century the Europeans had surpassed the Chinese in the construction of firearms. One of the reasons why the Europeans drove this innovation was because of the amount of wars that were fought in Europe during this time period. More wars meant more investments in weapons and tactics. Thus gunpowder brought about a military revolution which changed the system in which wars were fought. I will argue that the development of gunpowder and gunpowder weapons brought about a military revolution in Europe which changed the way wars were fought. The areas of change in warfare I will be focusing on are ground warfare, naval warfare and siege warfare. I will also look at the beginnings of gunpowder in China as it is important to understand on the basis on which the Europeans were expanding on. The specifics on when and how gunpowder was invented is greatly debated among historians. The different constituents of gunpowder were known as far back as the 1st Century CE. Charcoal was used for heating while sulphur and saltpeter were mentioned in texts dating from the 1st century BCE. Some historians suggest that taoist alchemist during the third century CE knew of the explosive property of gunpowder but this can t be proven. According to Wang Ling gunpowder was ... Peace could not continue in a country filled with quarrels that affected the common American. There is a common misconception that the American Civil War was fought only over slavery, when in fact there were several other reasons for why the War Between the States was fought. This being said slavery, the elect ion of Abraham Lincoln and the North and South dividing are all causes of the civil war. Slavery Slavery was one of the main causes of the civil war. The controversy had begun to get so big that southerners began to protest , immigrants had begun to flock to the northern areas which was frightening the southern states. Northern politicians had tried to compromise and ensure the new states in the union were free soil, which made matters worse and slave owners felt they had the right to own slaves on their property then. • 4. The Writer s Duty Of William Faulkner s Nobel Prize... Addie Champlin English II AP Dr. Payne September 9 2016 The Writer s Duty In William Faulkner s Nobel Prize acceptance speech, he speaks about the true purpose of writing and the importance of genuinely putting your heart into your work. He discusses how the only way writing can truly be valuable is if the author is dedicated to showing the authentic love the human spirit holds and what that love is capable of accomplishing. A good piece of writing will show both strength and vulnerability and will not be written for fame or recognition. It will be written for the sake of creating and spreading a message that is important to the author. In their memoirs, An American Childhood and The Road from Coorain, Annie Dillard and Jill Ker Conway, both feel very strongly about their purpose for writing. Conway tends to express her reasons for writing explicitly, while Dillard chooses to do it more implicitly. In An American Childhood by Annie Dillard, she clearly demonstrates the meaning of the novel in one passage that reads, Children wake up and find themselves here, discover themselves to have been here all along; is this sad? They wake like sleepwalkers, in full stride; they wake like people brought back from cardiac arrest or from drowning: in medias res, surrounded by familiar people and objects, equipped with a hundred skills. In January 2007, it was discovered that hackers stole as many as 200 million customer records due to a failed security system by TJX which resulted in a $4.8 billion dollars worth of damages (Swann, 2007). More important, WEP does not satisfy industry standards that require the use of the much stronger WPA (Wi Fi Protected Access) protocol (Berg, Freeman, Schneider, 2008). First, they broke into the store s network and stole employees usernames and password, which they were able to gained access to the TJX main database at the corporate headquarters and use those credentials to create their own accounts within the employee database. Once they gain entry into the corporate network, they were able to breach security and gather credit card numbers, and any customer information they wanted. Additionally, customer records seem to have contained the card validation code (CVC) number and the personal identification numbers (PIN) associated with the customer cards. Origins of the N-Word Essay The words Negro, nigger, and nigga have always been a sensitive topic, yet it is a topic that needs to be addressed in light of the more common use of its vernacular. There are so many young African Americans walking in ignorance to the history of their race. For example, when I was growing up, my attentive parents often took opportunities to teach me about and encouraged me not to sit on the back of a public transportation bus. Their ideology came from the idea that there were many who fought for, were imprisoned, and even died for my right to sit anywhere on a public bus. Watada likely viewed the deployment as illegal because he thought the US did not have ad bellum issues which warranted war. We invaded Iraq out of suspicion that they were constructing weapons of mass destruction, but this was purely suspicion. • 11. Types Of Conventional Pid Controller Conventional PID controller is one of the most widely used controllers in industry, it have remained, by far; the most commonly used in practically all industrial feedback control applications. The main reason is its relatively simple structure, which can be easily understood and implemented in practice. On the other hand the recent advancement in fractional calculus has introduced applications of fractional order calculus in control theory. One of the prime applications of fractional calculus is fractional order PID controller and it has received a considerable attention in academic studies and in industrial applications. Fractional order PID controller is an advancement of classical integer order PID controller. In many cases fractional order PID controller has outperformed classical integer order PID controller. In the field of automatic control, the fractional order controllers would lead to more precise and robust control performances. Although it is reasonably true that the fractional order models require the FOPID controllers to achieve the best performance, in most cases the researchers consider the fractional order controllers applied to regular linear or non linear dynamics to enhance the system control performances. In this chapter, the design of fractional order PID controller is considered in order to minimize certain performance indices such as integral square error. However, Turkey s involvement in the operation may also be explained through subaltern realism. The fact that the nations that comprised the coalition, save for Turkey, conducting Operation Provide Comfort went through the official channel of the UN shows that the intention was to act within the norms of the international community for conducting humanitarian interventions. Had the US decided to act unilaterally, without permission from the other states involved or the UN, it strongly indicate that the US self interests superseded those of the global community. Furthermore, the coalition of western powers respected Turkey s sovereignty by keeping the refugees at the border and providing aid in refugee camps there. Respecting a nations sovereignty, or giving reasonable cause for violating it, is an essential portion of constructivism as it indicates that states respect the artificially implemented restraints on themselves that they have set up. I am not sure what made Saturday nights Adoration so powerful, but it was the night I felt the hand of Jesus Christ. The priest took the monstrance off of the altar and proceeded to carry it throughout the fieldhouse. I started to cry and the person next to me grabbed my hand in support. We then stood with our arms held high praising the Lord with the hundreds of other people there. My knees began to feel week so I took a seat, and my new friend beside me put his hand on my shoulder. He teased the senses and gave an inevitable emotional twist at the end. This story follows a special inmate possessed some unworldly powers that changed people s fate, when he deemed worthy. John Coffey, last name like the drink, only not spelled the same way, (King 16) plays the hand of God in this story, when he saved a life, cured the incurable, punished the guilty, and changed the life of Paul Edgecomb inevitably. The arrival of John Coffey in fall of 1932 was a hot, normal day in the E Block cells (King 5). The guards saw this man as not much of a talker, but he often cried himself to sleep. He was sentenced there for the rape and murder of two little girls; a crime he did not commit. Paul Edgecomb had been acquainted with many inmates over his years, but this is the first one he offered his hand to (King 19). Even now I don t know why, he stated (King 19). We know about success tools, and we familiarize ourselves with many useful resources that lead us to success, so why do we need self discipline? We all have goals for many areas of our lives. Some of us want successful relationships, some like to get more money, others want simply happiness in their lives and others seek better health with less weight. These are common goals, and we sometimes fail or succeed in achieving them. The general question is: Why we don t achieve those goals? Why we don t become successful in these goals? The general answer is: Lack of self discipline. Success needs time. It does not happen at once. What you do today will determine the results in your future. If you change your present, you change your future. If you eat a lot of pizzas and delicious food today, you will gain weight, and this will show in your future weight. The number of lenses in such an eye varied, however: some trilobites had only one, and some had thousands of lenses in one eye. In contrast to compound eyes, simple eyes are those that have a single lens. For example, jumping spiders have a large pair of simple eyes with a narrow field of view, supported by an array of other, smaller eyes for peripheral vision. All of the success the Pequots have experienced has occurred due to the signing of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) on October 17, 1988. This act permitted class III gaming establishments by American Indian Tribes. The Act stated that Tribal governments were the primary regulators on Indian Gaming but that the Tribes were required to negotiate with their specific states to conduct a Class III gambling establishment. This is called the state regulatory layer to state tribal compact agreements. After the IGRA was passed the Pequots pursued a Malaysian rubber company of Genting International requesting a loan, which they eventually secured. It was paid off in just seven months. Genting International also lent the tribe an additional $142 million for expansion and a 610 room hotel and formed a partnership to build a second 330 room hotel nearby. SIN NOMBRE VIRUS RISK ASSESMENT IN YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK Hantaviruses are a genus of virus that are single stranded, negative sensed RNA viruses with a tripartite genome, represented by 45 different species across a worldwide distribution (Dearing and Dizney, 2010). They are pathogens primarily hosted by small mammals, in the family Muridae, with rats and mice making up the majority of these hosts. The deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) is the most widely dispersed mammal in North America and is the primary reservoir species for SNV (University of California Agricultural and Natural Resources 2013). Deer mice are nocturnal and are found throughout all types of habitats ranging from forests to scrublands, making this a very ubiquitous species that primarily feed on grains and seeds(University of California Agricultural and Natural Resources 2013). However deer mice are very adaptable animals that can change their diets to suit their environment and their diet can consist of invertebrates, fungi, fruits, and green vegetation. The typical lifespan of deer mice is 2 years and they typically do not breed during the winter, although in times of abundant food supply and warm temperatures they may breed year round with liter size varying from three to six young SNV (University of California Agricultural and Natural Resources 2013). SNV is believed to be transmitted horizontally amongst deer mice through exchanges of body fluid which may increase with aggressive behaviors amongst individuals, such ... • 47. Symbolism Of The Lottery By Shirley Jackson When incorporated well, symbolism enhances a story s overall impact. Shirley Jackson s short story The Lottery contains symbolism to affect the readers feelings as well as add interest. The story begins with the villagers gathering at the square to participate in the lottery. The villagers chat while waiting for the event to begin. After Mr. Summers comes with a black box, he stirs the pieces of paper in the box. The narrators describe the lottery as an old ritual that the community continues to respect. Once Tessie Hutchinson arrives, the lottery starts and the men pick a slip of paper from the black box. Bill Hutchinson has selected the special slip and Tessie doesn t believe it s fair. The Hutchinson s family member draw from the box and Tessie ends up with the paper with the black spot. The lottery s intention is revealed as the community crowds around Tessie, stoning her to death. Jackson constructs a compelling story with the symbols used, such as the lottery and the stoning. Jackson uses lotteries, which are generally seen as good things to win, as a representation of the town. When the story begins, the village seems to be a normal village engaging in a yearly ritual, Nothing suspicious or deadly with what they are doing so far. As they gather, the men [speak] of planting and rain, tractors and taxes while the women greeted one another and exchanged bits of gossip (388). Everything plays out similar to lotteries or a raffle because they have slips of paper to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
