After the recent Ebola outbreak, global health experts have turned to resilience frameworks used by other fields such as agriculture and engineering to understand how to build health systems that can withstand shocks, including infectious disease outbreaks, natural disasters, and political conflict. Speakers will first briefly outline each of the five key elements of the Resilience Framework, adapted from the Rockefeller Foundation and presented in a Lancet article in 2015, that can be applied to health systems. Participants will then work in small groups to discuss which health systems interventions should be pursued in response to a one-page description of an unnamed country. Speakers will then reveal what real-world interventions they designed for the country example and answer questions.
Behaviour change
Behaviour change is a complex process influenced by numerous factors at the individual and societal levels. There are several key stages in the process:
1) Knowledge and awareness of the issue and potential solutions.
2) Developing positive attitudes and intentions to change behaviour.
3) Translating intentions into action through skills development and addressing environmental barriers.
4) Maintaining changed behaviours over time with support.
Successful behaviour change interventions identify relevant target populations, goals, and influencing factors to design strategies addressing where individuals and groups are along the continuum from unaware to actively maintaining new behaviours.

Sight in particular influences our emotions, taste, and hearing by changing how we interpret what we see.
Sense Perception
Our perception is influenced by expectations, language, and interpretation. We adjust how we perceive things and use context to resolve ambiguity. However, perception is limited by our biology and neurobiology. For example, we cannot perceive things that happen very fast or slow, or we may have conditions like visual agnosia that limit recognition.

Selective Attention
At any moment we are conscious of a very limited amount of all that we are capable of experiencing. One example of this selective attention is the cocktail party effect—attending to only one voice among many. Another example is inattentional blindness, which refers to our blocking of a brief visual interruption when focusing on other sights.
Perceptual Illusions
Visual and auditory illusions were fascinating scientists even as psychology emerged. Explaining illusions required an understanding of how we transform sensations into meaningful perceptions, so the study of perception became one of psychology’s first concerns. Conflict between visual and other sensory information is usually resolved with the mind’s accepting the visual data, a tendency known as visual capture.
Perceptual Organization
From a top-down perspective, we see how we transform sensory information into meaningful perceptions when we are aided by knowledge and expectations.
The early Gestalt psychologists were impressed with the seemingly innate way we organize fragmentary sensory data into whole perceptions. Our minds structure the information that comes to us in several demonstrable ways:
Form Perception
To recognize an object, we must first perceive it (see it as a figure) as distinct from its surroundings (the ground). We must also organize the figure into a meaningful form. Several Gestalt principles—proximity, similarity, continuity, connectedness, and closure—describe this process.
Depth Perception
Research on the visual cliff revealed that many species perceive the world in three dimensions at, or very soon after, birth. We transform two-dimensional retinal images into three-dimensional perceptions by using binocular cues, such as retinal disparity, and monocular cues, such as the relative sizes of objects.
Motion Perception
Our brain computes motion as objects move across or toward the retina. Large objects appear to move more slowly than smaller objects. A quick succession of images, as in a motion picture or on a lighted sign, can also create an illusion of movement.
Perceptual Constancy
Having perceived an object as a coherent figure and having located it in space, how then do we recognize it—despite the varying images that it may cast on our retinas? Size, shape, and lightness constancies describe how objects appear to have unchanging characteristics regardless of their distance, shape, or motion. These constancies explain several of the well-known visual illusions. For example, familiarity with the size-distance relationships in a carpentered world of rectangular shapes makes people more susceptible to the Müller-Lyer illusion.
Perceptual Interpretation
The most direct tests of the nature-nurture issue come from experiments that modify human perceptions.
Sensory Deprivation and Restored Vision
For many species, infancy is a critical period during which experience must activate the brain’s innate visual mechanisms. If cataract removal restores eyesight to adults who were blind from birth, they remain unable to perceive the world normally. Generally, they can distinguish figure from ground and can perceive colors, but they are unable to recognize shapes and forms. In controlled experiments, animals have been reared with severely restricted visual input. When their visual exposure is returned to normal, they, too, suffer enduring visual handicaps.
Perceptual Adaptation
Human vision is remarkably adaptable. Given glasses that shift the world slightly to the left or right, or even turn it upside down, people manage to adapt their movements and, with practice, to move about with ease.

Clear evidence that perception is influenced by our experience—our learned assumptions and beliefs—as well as by sensory input comes from the many demonstrations of perceptual set and context effects. The schemas we have learned help us to interpret otherwise ambiguous stimu

- 2. What is perception? Perception - The awareness of things through our five senses ● sight ● sound ● touch ● taste ● smell
- 3. Primary Knowledge Most primary knowledge which we pick up as we experience more things can be gained through perception. We have the ability to learn from our mistakes which can easily link to the perception of different situations.
- 5. Perception consists of two elements: Sensation — provided by the world Interpretation — provided by our minds Visual illusions involve interpretation
- 6. - 10. Unconscious Many of our perceptions of the world happen at an unconscious level. Constantly making unconscious inferences about our experiences.
- 11. Examples of Unconscious - Sight- seeing the world upside down - Image in the bathroom mirror - person walking towards you - the world as blobs of color
- 12. Selectivity Count the number of times the white team passes the ball in this video. Everyone who counts correctly will be granted a surprise!

Selectivity of perception ● Our minds would overload on information if our perception was not selective. ● Personal interests/moods act as filters. ● Contrast and intensity are important factors. Example: -Bomb vs. Ticking clock ● We have evolved to be sensitive to moving objects. ● emotions can alter your perception of things. Examples: -Love -Fear
- 14. Seeing and Believing —Believing is seeing
- 15. Beliefs affect our perception ● Science ● History ● Art
- 16. Eye-Witness Testimony ● Unreliable ● Memory ● Reconstructed
- 17. Appearance vs Reality Though our perception is a great source of knowledge, we can at times misinterpret and fail to notice things we see and remember.
- 18. Confirmation by Another Sense A way to distinguish appearance from reality is to use another sense to confirm what something is.
- 19. Coherence Another way to discern appearance from reality is through coherence. If something you see doesn't fit within your overall experience of the world, then you’re probably mistaken
- 20. Independent Testimony The final way to determine appearance from reality is to get the testimony of another person.
- 21. Ultimate Reality What is there when we strip away the interpretation that our sense-organs impose on us?
- 22. Our experiences are subjective Colors, sounds and tastes do not exist out there independent of our experience of these sensations.
- 23. Physical vs Experienced Sensation ● Experienced sound - the actual crash that we hear ● Physical Sound - vibrations in the air
- 24. Theories of Reality Common-sense Realism: The way we perceive the world mirrors the way the world is.
- 25. Problems with Common Sense Realism Variability of Perception - More plausible that the object doesn’t change, but our perception does.
- 26. Scientific Realism There is an ultimate reality, but it isn’t what we experience.
- 27. Phenomenalism Beyond our experience of reality, there is nothing to be said.

- Visual illusions are relevant to our study of perception because they support the notion that our brain tries to make informed decisions about reality. As with the case of illusions, these inferences are not always accurate.
