THe Nature of Emotions
Emotion: Movere (Latin root)- to move
Primary Emotions: happiness, fear, anger, surprise, and disgust
James-Lange Theory: “Emotions are essentially physical in nature, and bodily
changes come before, and cause, emotional changes.”
Role Of Beliefs: social emotions- ambition, contempt, embarrassment, envy,
gratitude, guilt, jealousy,pride,shame, sympathy.
Emotional Energy
Emotions As Ways Of Knowing
Emotion as an obstacle
A) distorts other forms
1 perception: emotional coloring aware of certain aspects to the exclusion of others. Ex: Love & Hate
2 reson: holding beliefs w/ too much passion can prevent open mindedness.
3 language: likely to use slanted and emotive language & stop listening
B) We tend to rationalise our pre-existing prejudices
1 we tend to rationalise when there is conflict b/w 2 or more beliefs
2 at its worst we form illusory self confirming beliefs.
powerful emo. → biased percep. → fallacious reasoning
→ emo.lang. → more powerful emo.
C) Irrational behavior
1 some emotions are short sighted
2 turbulent emo. distorts thinking and behaving intelligently.
3 therefore to avoid this stoics advocate apathy without passion
Emotion as a Source of Knowledge
emotion reason
furious getting
annoyed
solving a
math problem
“some recent studies of brain-damaged patients in fact suggest life that if you
did not have any emotion then your life would quickly disintegrate.
Intuition or an Intuitive Feeling
3 types of Intuition
● Core Intuitions-fundamental intuitions about life, universe and
everything
1. Our core logic and reasoning comes from intuition
● Subject-Specific Intuitions-intuitions we have about areas of knowledge
(science and ethics)
1. Physics
2. Biology
3. Ethics
● Social Intuitions-intuitions about other people
Natural vs. Educated Intuitions
Conclusion
1) Emotions provide us with the enthusiasm to keep working(eg. persistence)
2) Emotions sometimes are used to justify our beliefs
3) Emotions are physical but influenced by culture and beliefs
4) Emotions can color our perception, inflame our language, and make us
develop the ‘ My theory right or wrong’ kind of attitude.
5) Rationalization
Rather than say that emotions are different from reason, we can say that
emotions are more or less rational
6) There is a sense that all knowledge is based on intuition, but the problem is
it differs from one person to another
7) Education is to unscramble human intuition
