Taking a Look at Hurricanes
Hurricanes are first formed when warm ocean water makes energy for the hurricane and causes
evaporation making air and clouds. The ocean water temperature has to achieve at least 80 degrees
fahrenheit for it to provide energy for the hurricane. The winds will then end up colliding and force
the winds upwards. After the winds have flown upward, they will flow outward above the storm which
will make the air rise. Lastly, the light winds outside the storm will let it grow into a national storm.
There are many tropical stages a storm has to go through before reaching the final hurricane stage. The
first stage is called a tropical wave. A tropical wave storm is basically a low pressured storm following
the trade winds. The second stage is called a Tropical Disturbance. A tropical disturbance is an area of
thunderstorms that will usually form in the tropics area. These storms only last for about a day at the
most and usually produce heavy rain and gusty winds. The third stage is called a Tropical Cyclone. A
tropical cyclone is similar to a tropical wave. It produces a low pressure storm but they develop
usually over tropical and sub tropical waters. The fourth stage is called a Tropical Depression. A
tropical depression is a medium pressure storm with winds approximately 38 mph or less. These
storms are one of the first stages when meteorologists are studying a certain storm forming. The fifth
stage is called a Tropical Storm. These storms are very common because they are the

Methods of Research
Research, systematic inquiry aimed at the discovery of new knowledge, is a central ingredient of the
scientific method in psychology. It provides the key to understanding the degree to which hypotheses
(and the theories behind them) are accurate. Just as we can apply different theories and hypotheses to
explain the same phenomena, we can use a number of alternative methods to conduct research.
In this exercise, you will learn more about several methods of research that psychologists use to gain
new knowledge about human behavior and ethical concerns psychologists face when conducting
research.
1. You are conducting research on sex differences in e mails. Your hypothesis is that men use more ...

Additionally, the habitat or environment cannot be controlled when making the observations.
3. You have decided to conduct a survey on whether a given political candidate will be popular with
Latino voters.
* What is an advantage of the survey method?
The survey method can be advantageous to show that a political candidate would be popular amongst
Latino votes because a larger population can be surveyed. This would show the attitudes of those
surveyed. * What is a disadvantage of the survey method?
The disadvantage is that the participants may not accurately or honestly answer the questions for fear
of having socially unacceptable attitudes.
4. You have decided to use the case study method to investigate a mother s experience in raising a
child with autism.
* What is an advantage of the case study method?
When studying a child with autism the case study method provides an in depth and intense
investigation of the individual and their behaviors. This provides a better understanding of the
individual.
* What is a disadvantage of the case study method?
The disadvantage is that the child is unique and the results couldn t be associated to the larger
populations because the results may not apply to all or represent the larger population accurately.
5. When conducting research what are some of the ethical concerns that must be addressed?

Nathan In The Poisonwood Bible
9) Share your thoughts on why the author never has Nathan Price narrate directly. Everything you
know about Nathan must be derived from what others said about him. Consider why Kingsolver chose
to omit Nathan s narration.
Nathan Price is not given a voice in The Poisonwood Bible because the story does not revolve around
him personally. The story revolves around his wife and four daughters, who are heavily affected by all
of his decisions and actions. Nathan indeed is the center of all the tragedy and hardship that the girls
endure, but Nathan does not suffer his own consequences, until his ultimate demise at the hand of the
Congolese. Also, I believe Kingsolver wanted a precise image of Nathan in the reader s mind
whenever he was found throughout the story. She wanted to depict him as abhorrent and repulsive, so
the readers despise him even more. Nathan is the center of pain for the Price family. First, he forces
them to leave their luxurious home in Bethlehem, Georgia, and move all the way to the Congo,
isolated from their modern society. All four of the children are deprived from a proper education, and
the entire family is restricted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Every time Nathan was present in the story I was immediately displeased and wanted him gone. His
vulgar comments and actions anger the reader so much, and Kingsolver wanted that image to stay. She
wanted the readers to hate him so they can sympathize with Orleanna and her daughters. If she
included his narrations in the book, the reader could possibly see his soft side, and his anger. His
frustration has to have a root somewhere (his horrific experience in the war), and with the exposure of
his own thoughts and feelings, the reader would be able to witness them and have a new opinion of
him. For the purpose of The Poisonwood Bible though, Nathan had to remain the antagonist and stay

A Discussion Of Campaign Finance Regulation
In his discussion of campaign finance regulation, Christiano argues that with cases of gatekeeper
mechanism and opinion formation mechanism, campaign expenditures should be regulated to prevent
drowning out of the opinions of nonaffluents. He proposes that certain regulations will actually help
protect and promote freedom of expression, and suggests to limit expenditures and distribute vouchers
during campaign periods. Using a prima facie equation, I will argue against the claim that Christiano s
restrictions interfere unduly with freedom of expression and defend his proposal as a valid resolution
to the problem of drowning out.
Christiano identifies two mechanisms by which expenditures influence a political system and drowns
out the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most obvious criticism of Christiano s proposal is that regardless of a regulation s intent or effect,
regulation of campaign expenditures is an infringement on freedom of expression. Many consider one
s allocation of one s own resources to be a mode of expression, and the Supreme Court has generally
upheld this view in Buckley vs. Valeon and Citizens United vs. FEC. In this sense, limiting campaign
expenditure is specifically limiting those who are able and willing to provide private expenditures
from doing so. Such a limitation can been seen as a violation of freedom of expression, and Christiano
s proposal to limit certain expressions in order to promote freedom of expression can seem absurd.
Christiano, however, argues that this temporary limitation is not an unduly interference because the
cost of campaign regulation on freedom of expression is surpassed by its benefits for freedom of
expression. He admits that the affluents will be restricted from fully wielding their economic
advantages, but he claims that this limitation will preserve and promote diversity of opinions during
the campaign period and also ensure long run development of discussions. Because campaign
regulations will prevent diversity of ideas from being diluted by drowning out, political discussion

John Locke And The Declaration Of The Rights Of Man
To enlighten is to give intellectual or spiritual light to someone. The Enlightenment period in Europe
in the 17th and 18th centuries was an intellectual movement that inspired thought, question, and
reason in people across the continent. It was the age of new ideals that forever altered the course of
our world today and will always be a time where tradition was no longer the primary way in which
people led their lives. Several Enlightenment thinkers such as Voltaire, Rousseau, and Hobbes have
influenced multiple government systems to reform their ways by inspiring revolution. Natural Rights
creates a democratic republic government where supreme power rests with the people and allows them
to elect representatives to operate their country, therefore upsetting citizens since absolute monarchies
rule. Natural Rights spawns uprisings and revolution in countries because people believe it to be their
right to have shared power which is evident through multiple documents such as The English Bill of
Rights, U.S. Constitution, and The Declaration of the Rights of Man.
John Locke s idea of Natural Rights created a whole new aspect of how the government should be
constructed. Natural Rights is the freedoms people are born with and should be protected by the
government, if not then the citizens have the right to overthrow the government since their rights are
not being preserved. This Enlightenment ideal is an important aspect in both today s world and during
revolutionary periods

Open Letter From Birmingham Jail Research Paper
In April of 1963, eight clergymen published an open letter: it was a plea for A Call for Unity.
Birmingham, Alabama was one of the most racially segregated cities in the U.S. There were separate
water fountains, separate doors, separate seats on the bus, separate schools, and separate hospitals.
This was happening due to one of the court rulings which was Separate but equal but actually it wasn t
equal. For example, the white hospitals were in better condition compared to the Black hospitals.
However, many Blacks didn t agree with this so they decided to demonstrate in order to get their equal
rights. As Easter was approaching, many people were making holiday purchases. The protesters took
advantage and started creating demonstrations. Martin Luther King Jr. created multiple demonstrations

Clergymen in Birmingham, Alabama published an open letter to those who opposed the desegregation
laws and to the protestors in order for them to understand that the public demonstrations aren t solving
the problem. The only way to solve this problem is by taking it to the court. This open letter

The Pros And Cons Of The Good Friday Agreement
The Good Friday Agreement says that they will let the majority vote then that will determine if
Northern Ireland unites with Ireland. This agreement allows Northern Ireland to be a part of the
United Kingdom for as long as the majority desires to be. (Bollens, page 57). Although there was
always a majority of Protestants in Northern Ireland, there has been a shift to more Catholics now.
Professor Bollens, projects that within the next 10 to 15 years the shift from Protestants to Catholics is
going to be so distinguished that there will probably be a vote for Northern Ireland to join Ireland and
that it will join (lec., Feb 6th). Since the younger generations are identifying with the Catholics more,
he projects that it will take 10 to 15 years because they need to wait until there are a significant
amount of people at or above the voting age in order to have a successful outcome. If that were to
happen then Britain would not have a choice but to agree. Yet, we would have to see if ... Show more

George S. Patton Rhetorical Analysis
General George S Patton, also known as Old Blood and Guts, was by far one of the greatest and most
controversial generals within the U.S army during World War 2. Renowned for his leadership of the
Third Army, he was the center of controversy, such as the time when he called for war against the
Soviets (Wilcox, 2010, p. 112). In doing this, General George S. Patton painted himself as an agitator,
which is an individual who speaks of the violation or misappropriation of the present form of society,
but he does not hold it ultimately responsible for social ills (Lowenthal, 1948). According to the
Portrait of the American Agitator, the average agitator George S. Patton fits this description quite well,
in the sense that he refused to capitulate to what could be deemed in today s terms as political
correctness. Unfortunately, as history has demonstrated, those who speak out against public opinion
are often scorned, ostracized and even subject to violence. Within Blumenson s book, The Patton
Papers, George S. Patton shares his unpopular opinion of the Germans in a letter to his wife Beatrice:
The stuff in the papers about fraternization is all wet... All that sort of writing is done by Jews to get
revenge. Actually the Germans are the only decent people left in Europe. It s a choice between them
and the Russians. I prefer the Germans. So do our cousins... (p. 744).
Inarguably, these words written by Patton were possibly some of the most dangerous statements he

Personality Theory Research Paper
Another part of creating a personality theory is the debate between uniqueness versus commonality
which I have briefly discussed. I believe that every person is unique because no two people have gone
through identical life experiences, nor have they been influenced in the exact same way by their
environments and people around them. With that being said, I also believe that human beings have
many things in common like how they deal with and react to certain situations. We are also alike in
our need for a place in the world and acceptance from others. Because I believe that humans are both
unique and common, I believe that both idiographic and nomothetic research are important in learning
how humans behave and who they will become. A lot of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another theory that is very reminiscent of behaviorism is the mechanistic theory in which humans do
not engage in cognition, but rather respond automatically to stimuli in their environment. The
animalistic theory also does not give humans enough credit, which would be the exact opposite of
humanistic psychology. It states that we as humans act in the same ways as animals, namely primates,
and while we do share some behaviors and some amount of intelligence, I do not think that there are
enough commonalities to completely say that we are the same. Another theory of human nature is the
evolutionary psychological theory which states that we have inherent behaviors that have been passed
down through the generations since the inception of humankind. I think that the theory of evolutionary
psychology does have some grounds because humans as a species have adapted and we are born with
certain knowledge and gut instincts about the world, but I do not think that this theory can completely
encapsulate human nature. I do not agree with the humanistic theory of human nature because I do not
believe that humans are born good, but instead mostly neutral and that we engage in whatever
practices or behaviors that we have decided to engage

A Comparative Study Between Islamic Law And Srilankan...
Matrimonial rights of women s under Islamic law (sharia law) (A comparative analyze between
Islamic law and srilankan Muslim law) Introduction to the Islamic law
Islamic law is a very great jurisprudence worldwide, Islamic law is defined as the law according to the
Muslim faith and as interpreted from the Quran also known as Sharia law. The sacred law of Islam is
an all embracing body of religious duties, the totality of Allah s commands that regulate the life of
every Muslim in all its aspects. Important feature of Muslim law is the fact that there is no clear
separation of Mosque (is a place of worship for followers of Islam) and state. Under Islamic law, the
religion of Islam and the government are one. Islamic law is controlled, ruled and regulated by the
Islamic religion; a theocracy. Islamic law purports to regulate all public and private behavior including
personal hygiene, diet, sexual conduct, and child rearing. Islamic law now prevails in countries all
over the Middle East and elsewhere covering 20 per cent of the world s population. Despite its relative
inflexibility, in some ways, Islamic law is superior to other systems of law, such as the preference
given to arbitration in civil disputes. Islamic law composed of following elements
* Sharia:
* Quran
* Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (generally known as Hadith) * Sunnah, literally means path.
* The Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad consists of his sayings, actions, approval and disapprovals. *

Augmented Reality
ABSTRACT Augmented reality (AR) has been defined by Barfield and Caudell (2001) as a system in
which a participant wears a see through display (or views video of the real world with an opaque
HMD) that allows graphics or text to be projected in the real world. Other modalities can be included
in AR and information can be subtracted from the real world using augmentation. AR is a computer
generated, interactive, three dimensional environment in which a person is immersed. AR is a field of
computer research that combines the actual scene, viewed by the user, and a virtual scene, generated
by the computer, that augments the scene with additional information. Augmented reality offers a
major advancement for the military s use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the introduction of Augmented Reality (AR) as being coined the term in the early nineties, we
were able to apply virtual objects within physical reality.Combining techniques of Sutherland/Sproull
s first optical see through Head Mounted Display (HMD) from the early 1960 s with complex, real
time computer generated wiring diagrams and manuals. Both were registered with each other and
manuals were embedded within the actual aircraft for intensely detailed procedures. Augmented
reality (AR) refers to computer displays that add virtual information to a user s sensory perceptions.
Most AR research focuses on see through devices, usually worn on the head that overlay graphics and
text on the user s view of his or her surroundings. In general it superimposes graphics over a real
world environment in real time. Getting the right information at the right time and the right place is
the key in all these applications. Personal digital assistants such as the Palm and the Pocket PC can
provide timely information using wireless networking and Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers
that constantly track the handheld devices. But what makes augmented reality different is how the
information is presented: not on a separate display but integrated with the user s perceptions. This kind
of interface minimizes the extra mental effort that a user has to expend when switching his or her
attention back and forth

Target Essay
Ads and commercials are on everything from the billboards you see going down the highway to the
ads you hear on the radio or TV. Every company uses them in different ways to try to appeal to
different audiences. Whether it s the older generations or the parents of newborn babies, all companies
try to appeal to people in order to sell their products. Target is a department store that has been around
since 1962 and they have grown and prospered ever since the beginning. Target is a branch off of the
Dayton Dry Goods Company started in 1902 by George Draper Dayton. Throughout the years the

the store rather than just what they need for themselves or the house at that moment (Wells). Target
shows the variety of items in their stores to help show the women in their store that different items that
they could find while browsing the store. By showing the different products, it helps make the women
want to go there because they can get away from the busyness of life by spending times wondering the
isles of Target. Not only can the women get away from the stressfulness of life, if they are in a rush
they can get everything they could need in one stop. Women make up over two thirds of the grocery
shoppers (Goodman). Of course, not all of these women are staying at home mom s or spouses so they
need to get their shopping done so that they can get back to the other parts of their lives. The same
way that Target is trying to appeal to women who like to browse when they shop, they are appealing to
those who need to get their shopping done in one quick stop. When showing all the grocery items

Formal Analysis, Contextualizing, and Compare and Contrast...
A formal analysis, contextualizing, and compare and contrast of the Egyptian sculpture of Isis
nurturing Horus and the Byzantine icon, The Virgin of Vladimir
This essay aims to investigate two different time periods in the history of art. It will scrutinize the
influence that the respective societal contexts had on the different artists, which in turn, caused them
to arrange the formal elements in a specific way. I will be examining an Egyptian sculpture of the god
Isis nursing Horus, her son, as well as the Vladimir Virgin icon, which dates from the Byzantine era.
Experts vary on the precise lifetime of the Ancient Egyptian civilization, but according to Mason
(2007:10) it existed from 3100 BCE up to 30 BCE. The Byzantine era, which ... Show more content

Although the surface of the artwork has been fairly damaged by smoke from burning candles and
incense, there is still a suggestion of the bright circular halos which had once crowned both the Virgin
and the child. Cooper relates the symbolism of the circle as one which expresses archetypal wholeness
and totality and therefore divinity (1982:19). The upper body of Mary appears very large, especially in
comparison with the Christ child, whose body fits into her bosom, which is generally associated with
comfort. Almost as though she tries to console him concerning his future death (Tansey amp; Kleiner,
1996: 312).
Examining the Ancient Egyptian civilization reveals much about the nature of its art. The art was
mainly religious in content and purpose and, as the religious dogma remained unchanged for nearly
3000 years, so did the art (Piper, 1991: 24). Because Isis and Horus are divine beings, they had to be
portrayed with limited human expression according to strict formal conventions, in keeping with their
divinity (Mason, 2007:13). The sculpture is fairly flat on the back side of the throne, for the sake of
functionality. It was not intended to be seen in the round , but was most probably placed against the
wall of a tomb (Ancient Egypt Myth amp; History, 2002: 439). In fact, this sculpture was not made

Reputation of these woman depended on secrecy as well, if a woman was involved with affairs, she
would be humiliated and find no suitors. Furthermore, a man s image in society would be stained if he
was caught in affairs, particularly with lower class women, such as Yugao as he only secretly visited
her when everyone in her household was asleep. If the secret of an affair is leaked out or known
amongst the women the men are associated with, it can cause jealously. It is believed that the vengeful
spirit of one of Genji s affair, Lady Rokujo learned of Genji s relationship with Aoi and Yagao and

died shortly after childbirth due to lady Rokujo, Thus, it can be said that many people in the
aristocracy of the Heian period lived a life where secrecy affected many parts of their culture such as
communication, attraction, and reputation. The standards of beauty was very different during these
times, compared to modern standards of beauty. The standard look for a beautiful woman was to have

Analysis Of The Article Culture And Society
This week s materials seem to give me a huge hit. They give me headache for sure, but they also
enlighten me. Of the three materials, the one I like the most is the one entitled Culture is ordinary. I
really enjoy reading this article. For me, it is like reading a journal or personal experience. It feels so
intimate, especially the experience shared. Compared to the other pieces, the book Culture and Society
or the article the Analysis of Culture, this particular article offers a different impression. True, the
shortness of the article first grabbed my attention. However, it does not necessarily mean that it does
not provide a poignant information. On the contrary, it gives me a more contextual and personal
information about what culture is. In addition, this article reminds me of my own cultural experience.
The title of the article, Culture is ordinary, somewhat brings me the message that one does not need to
travel far just to find out what culture is because as emphasized by Williams we can easily find out
culture from where they live; from the common thing in life, straight from your own door. For me, the
way Williams begins his discussion by giving the readers the description of his hometown (trip) is apt
to give a sense that culture is ordinary; that culture is not something unreachable or unseen, for it is
here, around us. The introduction also serves to reinforce how ordinary and simple culture is that it is
drawn from the everyday life. The bus route is

Japan s Attack on Pearl Harbour Essay
Japan s Attack on Pearl Harbour
In December 1941, Pearl Harbour was attacked by the Japanese. It was the consequence of a series of
events which brought tension between Japan and America to boiling point. Japan was a country
growing in power and stature and America soon came to realise that this growth could prove a threat
to them. America aimed to stop Japan s growth in its tracks as they realised that if the situation was
left to evolve much longer then the situation may be out of their control. However, it can be argued
that by not seriously dealing with this threat until the 1940 s, America had left things too late and
faced an opponent who would not back down.

At the Washington Conferences in 1921, America reasoned with the Japanese government and decided
that Japan s naval bases and naval arms would be limited. For every 5 ships that America had, Japan
would be allowed a maximum of 3. Although Japan agreed, they still aimed to expand more so that
they could become one of the major world powers.
The Great Depression in America hit Japan with force. Japan was affected because America s trade
was vital to Japan s survival. Trade with America became limited and Japans economic prosperity was
at risk. Japan needed more imports. The army decided on a militaristic option and seized Manchuria,
as it had rich supplies of raw materials such as coal, iron ore, timber and rice. They believed that by
expanding, Japan could become more powerful. As Japanese troops were already stationed in
Manchuria, it proved an easy target for the Japanese. The Americans, focusing on their own needs, did
not interfere with the seizing of Manchuria. This proved to be a bad decision for them as their trade
links with China were badly affected, but more importantly Because of the success in Manchuria the
military gained power. The public became more enthusiastic and supportive of militaristic
nationalism. This led to the military running the government by the late 1930s as many people

Catcher In The Rye Quotes Analysis
Anyway, it was the Saturday of the football game. [...] I remember around three o clock that afternoon
I was standing way the hell up on top of Thomsen Hill. [...] You could see the whole field from there,
and you could see the two teams bashing each other all over the place. [...] You could hear them all
yelling. (Chapter 1 Page 2) This quote is significant to The Catcher in the Rye because it displays the
ongoing theme of isolation throughout the novel. Holden clues the readers immediately by illustrating
that while everyone is off at the football, he prefers to be by himself. Holden often isolates himself
from others because in his mind he believes everyone is fake from just observing them and doesn t
take the chance to connect with them. 2. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Holden appears to have a good mental life, but it often weakens him. He does not feel the need to
worry like the phony s because worrying is all consuming. However, worrying about something other
than the present reality for him seems to be involved with the fantasies which lead him to search for
some greater fulfillment in life. All the worrying seems to be a defence against the hardship of reality.
Holden blocks out the reality with his imagination because the life he has created in his head is way
better than reality. 10. Most guys at Pencey just talked about having sexual intercourse with girls all
the time like Ackley, for instance but old Stradlater really did it. I was personally acquainted with at
least two girls he gave the time to. That s the truth. (Chapter 7 Page 48) The significance of this quote
is that Holden expresses the theme of not wanting to grow up. Holden explains that the only think
guys his age want to do is have sex with girls all the time, however, he clearly shows no interest in
having sex but really just wants someone to talk. He mentions that he is a virgin and even thought
many opportunities arise he never takes them. This is significant to the theme of not wanting to grow
up because Holden proves to the readers that he is not ready to become and adult and what comes with
it. Holden is nervous to become that intimate with another person and prefers to just imagine it in his

Barbie Body Image Essay
When a young girl looks into the mirror and does not see the beauty of herself, but instead sees her
flaws and imperfections, her confidence drops, and so does her self worth. The leading cause for this
issue is the unrealistic body image that Barbie models to girls. Why is this happening in our society
and how can we help?
This is happening because we give our children dolls that are thin, tall, blonde, and very unrealistic;
we give our children Barbies. We are giving our children figures as role models, but those models are
impossible to attain. Barbie lives a in a perfect happy world, where she has everything she wants and
can be whatever she wants to be. That is what we all want, that is why barbies are enticing toys. But,
the problem is that young girls can start to associate the unattainable Barbie figure with happiness.
The Barbie body image is planted into their minds. When they can not fulfill the Barbie body image, it
makes them feel less confident. Sometimes eating disorders develop because of this. It is ... Show

Stingless Bee Essay
It is believed that the bees have appeared on Earth about 125 million years ago in conjunction to
Angiosperms. The tribe Meliponini or native bees (Hymenoptera, Apidae) comprises about 300
species that in addition to obtaining food resources in plant species, they use them as a shelter. In
Brazil these bees are found in all ecosystems, and the Caatinga, despite environmental limitations,
comprises the largest number of stingless bees worldwide. The presence and the quality of the arboreal
vegetation present in an area is essential to the establishment of the stingless bees, showing an urgent
demand for research on these animals and their interactions in the places where they occur. Therefore,
this chapter aimed to evaluate the prevalence of

Development of the Periodic Table, X Rays and the...
Chemistry has been the way of life for millions of years! It helps us develop new concepts of thinking
and finding solutions to our problems. Did you know that fire was the first chemical reaction humans
learned to use and control? (worldbook.com) Chemistry has helped our world come up with new,
advanced technology to benefit us all. Chemistry played a role in developing the periodic table, x rays,
and the telescope. Primarily, the Periodic Table of Elements was primarily thought to be developed by
Dmitri Mendeleev. However, Antoine Lavoisier first established the modern concept of the element in
the late 1700s (worldbook). Mendeleev published his version of the periodic table in 1869. Also, many

If it weren t for x rays, how would doctors be able to detect abnormalities within a patient? The x ray
was accidently discovered by physicist Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895. He discovered it when he was
experimenting with electric flow currents in a cathode ray tube and saw a piece of barium
platinocyanide giving off light while he was working with the tube. His theory was that when the
electrons of the cathode ray tube hits the wall of the tube an unknown radiation, went across the room
and hit the chemical, and then caused a fluorescence.(paraphrase, Encyclopedia Britannica). Also, he
thought since he couldn t find any light refraction or things similar to light, that this new found thing
was unrelated to light. He named it X Radiation, this is also known as Rontgen Radiation. (Fun fact:
Roentgen can be spelled without the first e.) Rontgen also experimented further and learned that
paper, aluminum, and other metal things were transparent with this new invention. His first x ray was
of his wife s hand. He looked at the bones in her hand and he looked at the insides of metal objects
with his new found machine. Also, Roentgen received a Nobel Prize for his discovery. However,

The Spot Of The Corner
The Spot in the Corner Life is made of a huge collection of experiences, whether good or bad, that
leave an impression on oneself. Some of these experiences are recorded in memory, and others simply
forgotten. In any case, all these experiences take part in a particular place. So, depending on the type
of experience, these specific places acquire some significance. For example, many married couples
can identify the exact location where they decided to join their lives as well as they can remember
exactly where they got the first kiss. All memory has a context of space and time; for this reason, with
the passage of time we can give more meaning to some places than others. When I was younger, I did
not realize the significance of many places that were an important part of my life until I was thousands
of miles away from them. But I can identify one particular place that has been connected to my life
experiences for a long time. My most significant place was a corner in the second floor s living room
of my house in my hometown in Bolivia. This particular place marked the changing rhythm of my life,
since I was a little boy until I left my country. In the beginning this place was only one spot in the west
part of a living room that almost never was used. The first time I saw this spot it was only a boring
place with an old bookshelf with four drawers and a picture hanging on the wall. The first part that
caught my attention in that place was just that picture, which at first

The Hipster s Effect On Society And Address The Future Of...
The Oxford dictionary defines a hipster as a person who follows the latest styles and fashions,
especially those regarded as being outside the cultural mainstream (Fowler, Fowler and Murray,
1964). Since hipsters are a modern phenomenon, definitions are often broad and contradictory. There
also exists little scholarship concerning the subject since their subcultural formation must be analyzed
while it is still in formation. The lack of interest in academia contrasts to the immense quantity of
opinions regarding the phenomenon made by journalists, bloggers and layman experts (Scheimer,
2013). This essay will attempt to fill the gap in anthropological literature. We will focus on the hipster

The word referred to their behaviour and their way of dressing. Towards the end of the 50s, this group
of people came to be known as the Beatnik generation. (Rasmussen, Boas, Rasmussen, King and

attitude and left wing ideology are all rooted in Beatnik subculture.
Although there is no tangible definition, most attempts at defining elements of the hipster subcultural
identity agrees that hipsters are young, typically between 20 and 35 years old, most likely white and
from a middle class background. They can be either male or female. They are most likely studying
towards an arts degree or have recently graduated. Hipsters are interested in alternative culture: left of
center politics, indie music, independent films, thrift store or vintage fashion, Apple products and a
diet of locally grown, organic or vegetarian/vegan food (Scheimer, 2013). None of these interests are
set in stone, with there being a multitude of nameless, hipster subgroups who selectively embrace or
shun the items or opinions above.
Unlike previous youth groups, hipsters aim toward becoming individuals rather than as part of a
group. Whereas other youth groups are unified by their common label, a hipster is opposed to being
defined and labelled as such. Since categorizations imply

Financial Position of Tesco PLC
Introduction The relevance of evaluating both the financial performance as well as position of Tesco
PLC cannot be overstated. This is more so the case given the need to determine the stability and
viability of the company going forward. This text seeks to evaluate the financial performance as well

case, the evaluation will be based on the company s recently published annual accounts.
Tesco PLC: Company Background Yahoo! Finance (2012) describes Tesco PLC as a company that
operates stores that primarily offer food products, as well as general merchandise, clothing products,

financial as well as banking (retail) services (Yahoo! Finance, 2012). Taking into consideration the
number of branches it has in various parts of the world, Tesco PLC can be regarded one of the largest
retailers around the globe. Having been established sometimes in the year 1919 by Jack Cohen, the
company has surely come a long way (Tesco, 2012). The phenomenal growth of Tesco PLC over time
can largely be attributed to both the unwavering vision of the founder and the selection of a competent
team of managers to run the company s operations during its growth phase. Currently, the company

Romeo and Juliet have a love for each other, unlike any other love story. They sacrifice plenty of
things for eachother. Even if it s from hiding things that could get them killed to actually dying for

for eachother, and sacrificing things. In this essay, you will learn about now Romeo and Juliet love is
real, and not just lust. They go places, lose their lives, sacrifice things, and more for each other. The

COMPSTAT and the Newark Police Department Essay
The COMPSTAT ( Compare Statistics) system was developed by the New York Police Department in
1994 and is credited with having a significant impact on the reduction of major crimes in New York
city. COMPSTAT is internationally recognized as having become an extremely successful tool,
incorporating accurate crime intelligence analysis methods and streamlining law enforcement
management processes, including the seeding of power to local district commanders. In broad strokes,
COMPSTAT can be described as a series of process used for the collection and analysis of criminal
intelligence data which in turn assists commanders in developing effective strategies and tactics to

DDPIA is a integral part of that process that involves the gathering and analysis of timely and accurate
criminal intelligence information, crime statistics and other data such as emergency incident and
management information, traffic data, and individual anecdotal information such as routine police
reports. Criminal statistical information is crucial to COMPSTAT to enable analysts to structure
information in ways that can assist managerial decision making processes. Through the compilation of
a wide range of data sources it is possible to search for and determine larger patterns and trends, which
in turn allows commanders to make strategic decisions about resources, manpower, operations, plain
clothes operations and beat policing activities.
What changes in strategy have taken place as a result of the implementation process?
The COMPSTAT process has not changed the fundamental approach to policing at the grass roots
level. Traditional law enforcement tactics, which have long been a staple in police activities across the
board, still remain the preferred method for dealing with crime on the street. However, it is important
to note that the DDPIA process

A Midwife’s Tale by Martha Ballard Essay
When Thomas Jefferson wrote the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence, it became
one of his greatest legacies. In the first line he wrote, We hold these truths to be self evident, that all

The word men in the Declaration in the early 1700 and 1800 s meant exactly that, but even then it only

will not stop until he finishes the job. When I came up to the tree I thought Little Ann had treed Old
Dan. She was sitting on her haunches staring up and bawling the tree bark. There, a good fifteen feet
from the ground, with his hind legs planted firmly in the center of a big limb, and his front feet against
the trunk of the tree, stood Old Dan, bawling for all he was worth (Rawls 109). Old Dan is so obsessed
with catching the coons that he would jump out of the tree to catch it even if he died. Little Ann is
nervous at this point so she decided to call to Billy for help, and even after Billy got older and down
from the tree he started to climb back up. Little Ann saw Old Dan get sucked into a muskrat done so
she was smart enough to call for Billy and Billy didn t know what was going on she started to dig
where she saw Old Dan go under. She was digging in a small hole about the size of a big apple. It was
the air hole for a muskrat den. I pulled Little Ann away from the hole, knelt down, and put my ear to
it. I could hear something, and feel a vibration in the ground. It was an eerie sound and seemed to be
coming from far away. I listened. Finally I understood what the noise was. It was the voice of Old Dan
(Rawls 107). After she dug the beginning of the hole Billy started to hear the bawl of Old Dan
underground and Billy was able to pull Old Dan out. Her cunning ability to almost be able to
communicate with Billy allowed her to show Billy that Old Dan was stuck underground. Old Dan and
Little Ann share many differences that are good and bad but when it becomes time to hunt Little Ann
uses her brain to find and tree the coon and Old Dan uses his brawn to catch and finish the

Cognitive Neuroscience Paper
Cognitive Neuroscience is the study of the structure and function of the human brain and how it plays
a role in in our everyday mental processes. To date the idea of how the mind and body are connect and
able to interact is still being studied. As Banich (2011) states, it is the the critical part that links the
brain and mind which also encompasses neural processes. Neuroscience gives a With the definition of
cognitive neuroscience in mind, it is important to consider how the body is affected by the mind.
While the mind body issue is still not fully settled it has advanced to where we know that the mind is
considered psychological and the body is neurological (Solso,2008) psychologists and philosophers
are still debating wether they coexist

‘Federal Government Increasingly Dominates State...
A2 politics Jess Waldron
Federal government increasingly dominates state governments in the USA. Discuss
The United States of America have a federal constitution, where the President of the United States,
Congress, and the judiciary share powers, and the federal government shares sovereignty with the
state governments. This is the stark opposite to the unitary system in the UK where sovereignty lies in
parliament and some powers are given to local assemblies. There are many types of federalism; all
have been a dominant influence in the American political system at some point due to the style of
leadership brought in by each new presidential candidate. Throughout U.S. history, the division of
power between the federal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Federalism is a dual (split in two) system of sovereignty, splitting power between a central
government and various state governments. Both the federal and state governments can directly
govern citizens through their own officials and laws. The resulting Constitution allowed powers for
both federal and state governments. Each had some separate powers and some shared powers.
A federalist called John Marshall, as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, made decisions
favoring a strong federal government over state government power. In Marbury v. Madison (1803)
Marshall used judicial review (where the Court is the government body to decide whether laws are
constitutional), this was used in accordance with the principles and power established by the
Constitution. By the late 1930s, the Great Depression resulted in a dramatic change. The idea of
federalism and Marshall s earlier positions returned. In West Coast Hotel Co. v. Parrish (1937) the
Court extended federal power to regulate some economic activities within states. Under a broadened
Commerce Clause interpretation, federal powers expanded at the expense of state powers and
emphasis on the Tenth Amendment declined. The Court in NLRB v. United States (1936) reaffirmed
the Wagner Act which brought labor relations under federal oversight. In addition, the Social Security
Act creating a national retirement fund, passed in 1935.

Negative Effects Of Egocentrism
We are a social species. We reproduce sexually and thus our relationships with those around us are
essential to our ability to succeed as an individual. With these ideas in mind, society has come to
denounce egocentrism and to view those who are prone to it as undesirable and incapable of success.
Egocentrism is defined in the Oxford dictionary as Thinking only of oneself, without regard for the
feelings or desires of others. In the eyes of most, to think only of oneself is to be parasitic to all others.
To lack empathy is to be inherently indifferent which precedes unsuccessfulness. Why is it then that
there are so many stories of cruel billionaire businessman mistreating their employees and loved ones?
How can people that disregard the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, in my experience, for an egomaniac money, sex, and other transient pleasures are just as
good as long term relationships. Love and happiness are chemical cocktails. These chemicals present
themselves just as readily in fleeting relationships; commitment is unnecessary to their appearance.
More than that, a self centered person, barring any mental illness, can choose whether they behave
egocentrically or benevolently in their relationships depending on what they find advantageous. But,
the instability of relationships among the egocentric can also be harmful to their empathetic friends
and romantic partners. This case is a bit more tricky, it can be somewhat difficult to just choose to hate
someone even if exposure to them is harmful. Is it really fair to let egotism go unchecked if it
destabilizes relationships and causes emotionally harmed to the less naturally egotistical? Truthfully,
one must manage their own relationships. If one experiences emotional distress due to someone else s
self obsession it is his own fault for becoming involved with an egomaniac. Egocentrism is inherently
harmful to interpersonal relationships, but that is the problem of the egomaniac and nobody

An Analysis Of Esther And Plath s Life
I. Genres
A. Autobiographical novel and Autobiography Literary conventions common to autobiographical
works are usually written in the first person, which is the way in which a person might tell their own
story. In this case, Esther is telling her story, first in a series of flashbacks and then in the present
tense. The awful way in which the protagonist, Esther, views the events around her and the gory
descriptions she offers, seem to represent not only horrible events, but also the tortured mind of the
writer. The fact that Esther is fixated on suicide and that suicide and death are constant topics in the
novel are the most obvious reasons to see the work as autobiographical. There are specific events that
happen to Esther in the novel that have been researched and have been determine to have happened to
Plath in exactly the same manner or are very similar to events in Plath s life. Esther and Plath both had
fathers who died when they were young. Esther and Plath both won writing internships at a magazine
in New York City. Esther and Plath both had Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Luke Ferretter, author
of Sylvia Plath s Fiction: A Critical Study, argues that Esther s description of her ECT is a way for
Plath to tell her own story about the experience (21). Another validation of the autobiographical nature
of The Bell Jar comes from an unexpected source in an unexpected way. Literary scholar Lois Ames
offers a surprising insight into why many consider

Education And Education In Jane Austen s Emma
The 18th to 19th century was a revolutionary time period for women. Jane Austen s Emma was
published during a time where women were campaigning for women s suffrage and for female
education. Emma is a book about a girl that vows not to fall in love, but plays matchmaker for her
friend and acquaintances. The book shows readers what 18th century England looked like for women.
Upper class women were allowed to get an education; however, the education they were taught was
vastly different than men s education. Women learned how to weave and learn French while men
learned about government, culture, philosophy from around the world, etc. However, Emma also
introduces revolutionary concepts like education for women and the radical ideas Mary Wollstonecraft
s A Vindication of Women s Right demonstrated. The beginning of the book summarizes life in
England for women during the 18th century. Women had little opportunity to develop a respectable
position in society because of their lack of intellectual proficiency. This was because of the sexualized
education present during 18th century England. The only way women could move through social
hierarchy was through marriage. An important theme of Emma is marriage and status. In the text,
Volume 1, Chapter 4, Emma states, The yeomanry are precisely the order of people with whom I feel I
can have nothing to do. A degree or two lower, and a creditable appearance might interest me; I might
hope to be useful to their families in some way or

The Peasants Revolt The Movie Essay
The Protestant Reformation was a religious movement to reform Catholicism leading to the creation
of Protestantism. Many movies try to portray the religious movement, but one stands out from the
others. The film Luther did not accurately portray the social and political aspects of the Protestant
Reformation. The film does not give enough detail to historically represent the German peasants and
nobility; it also dramatizes political characters and events to specifically target Luther s enemies,
giving inaccurate information in the process.
The film lacks the detail to historically portray the social aspects successfully because the plot orbits
around Martin Luther; it omits different aspects of the Peasants Revolt, specifically the relationship
between the German peasants and nobility. Throughout the film, Eric Till the director eliminates most
of the interaction between the German peasants and nobility allowing the film to revolve around
Luther. The Peasants Revolt erupted due to German nobles placing unrealistic taxes on peasants, but
the movie prioritized another cause: The whole world s been turned upside down by that madman
Luther (Luther 2003). Peasants from Wittenberg claimed that Luther s ideas lived on after his
kidnapping and inspired peasants to separate themselves from the Catholic Church. Till disregards the
importance of taxation and gives the viewers inaccurate information: Heading Wimpheling s
complaints were protests against the Vatican s systematic

Mental Illness
Mental Illness In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
Mental Illness In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
Abstract
Mental illness is a prominent problem in today s troublesome world. Each day many people are
diagnosed with a mental illness, most commonly depression. The human mind becomes tarnished
when a person has a mental illness, and often the illness takes over a person s life completely. Mental
illness is a serious problem and often goes untreated or misdiagnosed. The darkness within a person s
mind is one of the toughest aspects of life for people to conquer and many lose themselves in the fight.
To further understand mental illness, it would be easiest to peer into the life of someone with one of
these illnesses. For example, taking a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While filming the movie, which eventually became one of his biggest successes, he fell in love with
his on screen wife Michelle Williams. The love sprouted after Williams had injured her knee and
Ledger took it upon himself to care for her. Their love grew so quickly that Williams was pregnant
before the film was finished. Their child, Matilda was born in October of 2005. The two girls were the
loves of his life which he was quite open about. During the following couple years, Heath s fame
increased and the demand for his work grew, keeping him away from home more and more. This led
to a break in the relationship between him and Michelle. They separated, and this sent Ledger into the
darkest place he d ever been. He was crushed and depressed over the fact that he couldn t spend time
with his daughter. This depression, coupled with anxiety and insomnia that he had experienced for
most of his adult life, led to him taking a plethora of prescription pills to counteract his illnesses.
Eventually, this barrage of medications on his body caught up with him, and he passed away due to
accidental overdose on January 22, 2008. The story of Ledger s life is saddening to say the least, and
just goes to show that mental illness is a silent killer that can take the life of any unsuspecting victim
caught in its path (Pendleton, 2008).
After reading Frankenstein by author Mary Shelly, it is easy to see that the novel s protagonist, Victor
Frankenstein, is a

  • 2. Taking a Look at Hurricanes Hurricanes are first formed when warm ocean water makes energy for the hurricane and causes evaporation making air and clouds. The ocean water temperature has to achieve at least 80 degrees fahrenheit for it to provide energy for the hurricane. The winds will then end up colliding and force the winds upwards. After the winds have flown upward, they will flow outward above the storm which will make the air rise. Lastly, the light winds outside the storm will let it grow into a national storm. There are many tropical stages a storm has to go through before reaching the final hurricane stage. The first stage is called a tropical wave. A tropical wave storm is basically a low pressured storm following the trade winds. The second stage is called a Tropical Disturbance. A tropical disturbance is an area of thunderstorms that will usually form in the tropics area. These storms only last for about a day at the most and usually produce heavy rain and gusty winds. The third stage is called a Tropical Cyclone. A tropical cyclone is similar to a tropical wave. It produces a low pressure storm but they develop usually over tropical and sub tropical waters. The fourth stage is called a Tropical Depression. A tropical depression is a medium pressure storm with winds approximately 38 mph or less. These storms are one of the first stages when meteorologists are studying a certain storm forming. The fifth stage is called a Tropical Storm. These storms are very common because they are the ... It provides the key to understanding the degree to which hypotheses (and the theories behind them) are accurate. Just as we can apply different theories and hypotheses to explain the same phenomena, we can use a number of alternative methods to conduct research. In this exercise, you will learn more about several methods of research that psychologists use to gain new knowledge about human behavior and ethical concerns psychologists face when conducting research. 1. You have decided to conduct a survey on whether a given political candidate will be popular with Latino voters. * What is an advantage of the survey method? The survey method can be advantageous to show that a political candidate would be popular amongst Latino votes because a larger population can be surveyed. This would show the attitudes of those surveyed. * What is a disadvantage of the survey method? The disadvantage is that the participants may not accurately or honestly answer the questions for fear of having socially unacceptable attitudes. 4. You have decided to use the case study method to investigate a mother s experience in raising a child with autism. * What is an advantage of the case study method? When studying a child with autism the case study method provides an in depth and intense investigation of the individual and their behaviors. This provides a better understanding of the individual. * What is a disadvantage of the case study method? The disadvantage is that the child is unique and the results couldn t be associated to the larger populations because the results may not apply to all or represent the larger population accurately.

  • 5. Nathan In The Poisonwood Bible 9) Share your thoughts on why the author never has Nathan Price narrate directly. Everything you know about Nathan must be derived from what others said about him. Consider why Kingsolver chose to omit Nathan s narration. Nathan Price is not given a voice in The Poisonwood Bible because the story does not revolve around him personally. The story revolves around his wife and four daughters, who are heavily affected by all of his decisions and actions. Nathan indeed is the center of all the tragedy and hardship that the girls endure, but Nathan does not suffer his own consequences, until his ultimate demise at the hand of the Congolese. Also, I believe Kingsolver wanted a precise image of Nathan in the reader s mind whenever he was found throughout the story. She wanted to depict him as abhorrent and repulsive, so the readers despise him even more. Nathan is the center of pain for the Price family. First, he forces them to leave their luxurious home in Bethlehem, Georgia, and move all the way to the Congo, isolated from their modern society. All four of the children are deprived from a proper education, and the entire family is restricted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Every time Nathan was present in the story I was immediately displeased and wanted him gone. His vulgar comments and actions anger the reader so much, and Kingsolver wanted that image to stay. She wanted the readers to hate him so they can sympathize with Orleanna and her daughters. If she included his narrations in the book, the reader could possibly see his soft side, and his anger. His frustration has to have a root somewhere (his horrific experience in the war), and with the exposure of his own thoughts and feelings, the reader would be able to witness them and have a new opinion of him. For the purpose of The Poisonwood Bible though, Nathan had to remain the antagonist and stay the bad ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. A Discussion Of Campaign Finance Regulation In his discussion of campaign finance regulation, Christiano argues that with cases of gatekeeper mechanism and opinion formation mechanism, campaign expenditures should be regulated to prevent drowning out of the opinions of nonaffluents. He proposes that certain regulations will actually help protect and promote freedom of expression, and suggests to limit expenditures and distribute vouchers during campaign periods. Using a prima facie equation, I will argue against the claim that Christiano s restrictions interfere unduly with freedom of expression and defend his proposal as a valid resolution to the problem of drowning out. Christiano identifies two mechanisms by which expenditures influence a political system and drowns out the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most obvious criticism of Christiano s proposal is that regardless of a regulation s intent or effect, regulation of campaign expenditures is an infringement on freedom of expression. Many consider one s allocation of one s own resources to be a mode of expression, and the Supreme Court has generally upheld this view in Buckley vs. Valeon and Citizens United vs. FEC. In this sense, limiting campaign expenditure is specifically limiting those who are able and willing to provide private expenditures from doing so. Such a limitation can been seen as a violation of freedom of expression, and Christiano s proposal to limit certain expressions in order to promote freedom of expression can seem absurd. Christiano, however, argues that this temporary limitation is not an unduly interference because the cost of campaign regulation on freedom of expression is surpassed by its benefits for freedom of expression. He admits that the affluents will be restricted from fully wielding their economic advantages, but he claims that this limitation will preserve and promote diversity of opinions during the campaign period and also ensure long run development of discussions. Because campaign regulations will prevent diversity of ideas from being diluted by drowning out, political discussion will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. John Locke And The Declaration Of The Rights Of Man To enlighten is to give intellectual or spiritual light to someone. The Enlightenment period in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries was an intellectual movement that inspired thought, question, and reason in people across the continent. It was the age of new ideals that forever altered the course of our world today and will always be a time where tradition was no longer the primary way in which people led their lives. Several Enlightenment thinkers such as Voltaire, Rousseau, and Hobbes have influenced multiple government systems to reform their ways by inspiring revolution. Natural Rights creates a democratic republic government where supreme power rests with the people and allows them to elect representatives to operate their country, therefore upsetting citizens since absolute monarchies rule. Natural Rights spawns uprisings and revolution in countries because people believe it to be their right to have shared power which is evident through multiple documents such as The English Bill of Rights, U.S. Constitution, and The Declaration of the Rights of Man. John Locke s idea of Natural Rights created a whole new aspect of how the government should be constructed. Natural Rights is the freedoms people are born with and should be protected by the government, if not then the citizens have the right to overthrow the government since their rights are not being preserved. This Enlightenment ideal is an important aspect in both today s world and during revolutionary periods ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This agreement allows Northern Ireland to be a part of the United Kingdom for as long as the majority desires to be. (Bollens, page 57). Professor Bollens, projects that within the next 10 to 15 years the shift from Protestants to Catholics is going to be so distinguished that there will probably be a vote for Northern Ireland to join Ireland and that it will join (lec., Feb 6th). Since the younger generations are identifying with the Catholics more, he projects that it will take 10 to 15 years because they need to wait until there are a significant amount of people at or above the voting age in order to have a successful outcome. • 11. George S. Patton Rhetorical Analysis General George S Patton, also known as Old Blood and Guts, was by far one of the greatest and most controversial generals within the U.S army during World War 2. Renowned for his leadership of the Third Army, he was the center of controversy, such as the time when he called for war against the Soviets (Wilcox, 2010, p. 112). In doing this, General George S. Patton painted himself as an agitator, which is an individual who speaks of the violation or misappropriation of the present form of society, but he does not hold it ultimately responsible for social ills (Lowenthal, 1948). According to the Portrait of the American Agitator, the average agitator George S. Patton fits this description quite well, in the sense that he refused to capitulate to what could be deemed in today s terms as political correctness. Unfortunately, as history has demonstrated, those who speak out against public opinion are often scorned, ostracized and even subject to violence. Within Blumenson s book, The Patton Papers, George S. Patton shares his unpopular opinion of the Germans in a letter to his wife Beatrice: The stuff in the papers about fraternization is all wet... All that sort of writing is done by Jews to get revenge. Actually the Germans are the only decent people left in Europe. It s a choice between them and the Russians. I prefer the Germans. • 12. Personality Theory Research Paper Another part of creating a personality theory is the debate between uniqueness versus commonality which I have briefly discussed. I believe that every person is unique because no two people have gone through identical life experiences, nor have they been influenced in the exact same way by their environments and people around them. With that being said, I also believe that human beings have many things in common like how they deal with and react to certain situations. We are also alike in our need for a place in the world and acceptance from others. Because I believe that humans are both unique and common, I believe that both idiographic and nomothetic research are important in learning how humans behave and who they will become. A lot of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another theory that is very reminiscent of behaviorism is the mechanistic theory in which humans do not engage in cognition, but rather respond automatically to stimuli in their environment. The animalistic theory also does not give humans enough credit, which would be the exact opposite of humanistic psychology. It states that we as humans act in the same ways as animals, namely primates, and while we do share some behaviors and some amount of intelligence, I do not think that there are enough commonalities to completely say that we are the same. Another theory of human nature is the evolutionary psychological theory which states that we have inherent behaviors that have been passed down through the generations since the inception of humankind. I think that the theory of evolutionary psychology does have some grounds because humans as a species have adapted and we are born with certain knowledge and gut instincts about the world, but I do not think that this theory can completely encapsulate human nature. I do not agree with the humanistic theory of human nature because I do not believe that humans are born good, but instead mostly neutral and that we engage in whatever practices or behaviors that we have decided to engage ... • 13. A Comparative Study Between Islamic Law And Srilankan... Matrimonial rights of women s under Islamic law (sharia law) (A comparative analyze between Islamic law and srilankan Muslim law) Introduction to the Islamic law Islamic law is a very great jurisprudence worldwide, Islamic law is defined as the law according to the Muslim faith and as interpreted from the Quran also known as Sharia law. The sacred law of Islam is an all embracing body of religious duties, the totality of Allah s commands that regulate the life of every Muslim in all its aspects. Important feature of Muslim law is the fact that there is no clear separation of Mosque (is a place of worship for followers of Islam) and state. Under Islamic law, the religion of Islam and the government are one. Islamic law is controlled, ruled and regulated by the Islamic religion; a theocracy. Islamic law purports to regulate all public and private behavior including personal hygiene, diet, sexual conduct, and child rearing. Islamic law now prevails in countries all over the Middle East and elsewhere covering 20 per cent of the world s population. Despite its relative inflexibility, in some ways, Islamic law is superior to other systems of law, such as the preference given to arbitration in civil disputes. Augmented Reality ABSTRACT Augmented reality (AR) has been defined by Barfield and Caudell (2001) as a system in which a participant wears a see through display (or views video of the real world with an opaque HMD) that allows graphics or text to be projected in the real world. Other modalities can be included in AR and information can be subtracted from the real world using augmentation. AR is a computer generated, interactive, three dimensional environment in which a person is immersed. AR is a field of computer research that combines the actual scene, viewed by the user, and a virtual scene, generated by the computer, that augments the scene with additional information. With the introduction of Augmented Reality (AR) as being coined the term in the early nineties, we were able to apply virtual objects within physical reality.Combining techniques of Sutherland/Sproull s first optical see through Head Mounted Display (HMD) from the early 1960 s with complex, real time computer generated wiring diagrams and manuals. Both were registered with each other and manuals were embedded within the actual aircraft for intensely detailed procedures. Augmented reality (AR) refers to computer displays that add virtual information to a user s sensory perceptions. Most AR research focuses on see through devices, usually worn on the head that overlay graphics and text on the user s view of his or her surroundings. In general it superimposes graphics over a real world environment in real time. Getting the right information at the right time and the right place is the key in all these applications. Personal digital assistants such as the Palm and the Pocket PC can provide timely information using wireless networking and Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers that constantly track the handheld devices. But what makes augmented reality different is how the information is presented: not on a separate display but integrated with the user s perceptions. This kind of interface minimizes the extra mental effort that a user has to expend when switching his or her attention back and forth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It will scrutinize the influence that the respective societal contexts had on the different artists, which in turn, caused them to arrange the formal elements in a specific way. I will be examining an Egyptian sculpture of the god Isis nursing Horus, her son, as well as the Vladimir Virgin icon, which dates from the Byzantine era. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the surface of the artwork has been fairly damaged by smoke from burning candles and incense, there is still a suggestion of the bright circular halos which had once crowned both the Virgin and the child. Cooper relates the symbolism of the circle as one which expresses archetypal wholeness and totality and therefore divinity (1982:19). The upper body of Mary appears very large, especially in comparison with the Christ child, whose body fits into her bosom, which is generally associated with comfort. Almost as though she tries to console him concerning his future death (Tansey amp; Kleiner, 1996: 312). Examining the Ancient Egyptian civilization reveals much about the nature of its art. The art was mainly religious in content and purpose and, as the religious dogma remained unchanged for nearly 3000 years, so did the art (Piper, 1991: 24). Because Isis and Horus are divine beings, they had to be portrayed with limited human expression according to strict formal conventions, in keeping with their divinity (Mason, 2007:13). The sculpture is fairly flat on the back side of the throne, for the sake of functionality. It was not intended to be seen in the round , but was most probably placed against the wall of a tomb (Ancient Egypt Myth amp; History, 2002: 439). In fact, this sculpture was not made ... If the secret of an affair is leaked out or known amongst the women the men are associated with, it can cause jealously. True, the shortness of the article first grabbed my attention. However, it does not necessarily mean that it does not provide a poignant information. On the contrary, it gives me a more contextual and personal information about what culture is. In addition, this article reminds me of my own cultural experience. The title of the article, Culture is ordinary, somewhat brings me the message that one does not need to travel far just to find out what culture is because as emphasized by Williams we can easily find out culture from where they live; from the common thing in life, straight from your own door. For me, the way Williams begins his discussion by giving the readers the description of his hometown (trip) is apt to give a sense that culture is ordinary; that culture is not something unreachable or unseen, for it is here, around us. The introduction also serves to reinforce how ordinary and simple culture is that it is drawn from the everyday life. The bus route is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was the consequence of a series of events which brought tension between Japan and America to boiling point. Japan was a country growing in power and stature and America soon came to realise that this growth could prove a threat to them. America aimed to stop Japan s growth in its tracks as they realised that if the situation was left to evolve much longer then the situation may be out of their control. For every 5 ships that America had, Japan would be allowed a maximum of 3. Although Japan agreed, they still aimed to expand more so that they could become one of the major world powers. The Great Depression in America hit Japan with force. Japan was affected because America s trade was vital to Japan s survival. Trade with America became limited and Japans economic prosperity was at risk. Japan needed more imports. The army decided on a militaristic option and seized Manchuria, as it had rich supplies of raw materials such as coal, iron ore, timber and rice. They believed that by expanding, Japan could become more powerful. As Japanese troops were already stationed in Manchuria, it proved an easy target for the Japanese. The Americans, focusing on their own needs, did not interfere with the seizing of Manchuria. This proved to be a bad decision for them as their trade links with China were badly affected, but more importantly Because of the success in Manchuria the military gained power. The public became more enthusiastic and supportive of militaristic nationalism. This led to the military running the government by the late 1930s as many people supported ... [...] You could see the whole field from there, and you could see the two teams bashing each other all over the place. [...] You could hear them all yelling. (Chapter 1 Page 2) This quote is significant to The Catcher in the Rye because it displays the ongoing theme of isolation throughout the novel. Barbie Body Image Essay When a young girl looks into the mirror and does not see the beauty of herself, but instead sees her flaws and imperfections, her confidence drops, and so does her self worth. The leading cause for this issue is the unrealistic body image that Barbie models to girls. Why is this happening in our society and how can we help? This is happening because we give our children dolls that are thin, tall, blonde, and very unrealistic; we give our children Barbies. We are giving our children figures as role models, but those models are impossible to attain. Barbie lives a in a perfect happy world, where she has everything she wants and can be whatever she wants to be. That is what we all want, that is why barbies are enticing toys. Some of these experiences are recorded in memory, and others simply forgotten. In any case, all these experiences take part in a particular place. So, depending on the type of experience, these specific places acquire some significance. For example, many married couples can identify the exact location where they decided to join their lives as well as they can remember exactly where they got the first kiss. All memory has a context of space and time; for this reason, with the passage of time we can give more meaning to some places than others. When I was younger, I did not realize the significance of many places that were an important part of my life until I was thousands of miles away from them. But I can identify one particular place that has been connected to my life experiences for a long time. My most significant place was a corner in the second floor s living room of my house in my hometown in Bolivia. Old Dan is strong but he is not too smart because he s completely obsessed with catching coons and will not stop until he finishes the job. When I came up to the tree I thought Little Ann had treed Old Dan. She was sitting on her haunches staring up and bawling the tree bark. There, a good fifteen feet from the ground, with his hind legs planted firmly in the center of a big limb, and his front feet against the trunk of the tree, stood Old Dan, bawling for all he was worth (Rawls 109). Old Dan is so obsessed with catching the coons that he would jump out of the tree to catch it even if he died. Little Ann is nervous at this point so she decided to call to Billy for help, and even after Billy got older and down from the tree he started to climb back up. Little Ann saw Old Dan get sucked into a muskrat done so she was smart enough to call for Billy and Billy didn t know what was going on she started to dig where she saw Old Dan go under. She was digging in a small hole about the size of a big apple. It was the air hole for a muskrat den. I pulled Little Ann away from the hole, knelt down, and put my ear to it. I could hear something, and feel a vibration in the ground. It was an eerie sound and seemed to be coming from far away. I listened. Finally I understood what the noise was. It was the voice of Old Dan (Rawls 107). After she dug the beginning of the hole Billy started to hear the bawl of Old Dan underground and Billy was able to pull Old Dan out. Her cunning ability to almost be able to communicate with Billy allowed her to show Billy that Old Dan was stuck underground. • 42. ‘Federal Government Increasingly Dominates State... A2 politics Jess Waldron Federal government increasingly dominates state governments in the USA. Discuss The United States of America have a federal constitution, where the President of the United States, Congress, and the judiciary share powers, and the federal government shares sovereignty with the state governments. This is the stark opposite to the unitary system in the UK where sovereignty lies in parliament and some powers are given to local assemblies. There are many types of federalism; all have been a dominant influence in the American political system at some point due to the style of leadership brought in by each new presidential candidate. Throughout U.S. history, the division of power between the federal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Federalism is a dual (split in two) system of sovereignty, splitting power between a central government and various state governments. Both the federal and state governments can directly govern citizens through their own officials and laws. The resulting Constitution allowed powers for both federal and state governments. Each had some separate powers and some shared powers. A federalist called John Marshall, as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, made decisions favoring a strong federal government over state government power. In Marbury v. Madison (1803) Marshall used judicial review (where the Court is the government body to decide whether laws are constitutional), this was used in accordance with the principles and power established by the Constitution. By the late 1930s, the Great Depression resulted in a dramatic change. The idea of federalism and Marshall s earlier positions returned. In West Coast Hotel Co. v. Parrish (1937) the Court extended federal power to regulate some economic activities within states. Under a broadened Commerce Clause interpretation, federal powers expanded at the expense of state powers and emphasis on the Tenth Amendment declined. The Court in NLRB v. United States (1936) reaffirmed the Wagner Act which brought labor relations under federal oversight. In addition, the Social Security Act creating a national retirement fund, passed in 1935. ... • 43. Negative Effects Of Egocentrism We are a social species. We reproduce sexually and thus our relationships with those around us are essential to our ability to succeed as an individual. With these ideas in mind, society has come to denounce egocentrism and to view those who are prone to it as undesirable and incapable of success. Egocentrism is defined in the Oxford dictionary as Thinking only of oneself, without regard for the feelings or desires of others. In the eyes of most, to think only of oneself is to be parasitic to all others. To lack empathy is to be inherently indifferent which precedes unsuccessfulness. Why is it then that there are so many stories of cruel billionaire businessman mistreating their employees and loved ones? How can people that disregard the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, in my experience, for an egomaniac money, sex, and other transient pleasures are just as good as long term relationships. Love and happiness are chemical cocktails. These chemicals present themselves just as readily in fleeting relationships; commitment is unnecessary to their appearance. More than that, a self centered person, barring any mental illness, can choose whether they behave egocentrically or benevolently in their relationships depending on what they find advantageous. But, the instability of relationships among the egocentric can also be harmful to their empathetic friends and romantic partners. This case is a bit more tricky, it can be somewhat difficult to just choose to hate someone even if exposure to them is harmful. Is it really fair to let egotism go unchecked if it destabilizes relationships and causes emotionally harmed to the less naturally egotistical? Truthfully, one must manage their own relationships. If one experiences emotional distress due to someone else s self obsession it is his own fault for becoming involved with an egomaniac. Egocentrism is inherently harmful to interpersonal relationships, but that is the problem of the egomaniac and nobody ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. An Analysis Of Esther And Plath s Life I. Genres A. Autobiographical novel and Autobiography Literary conventions common to autobiographical works are usually written in the first person, which is the way in which a person might tell their own story. In this case, Esther is telling her story, first in a series of flashbacks and then in the present tense. The awful way in which the protagonist, Esther, views the events around her and the gory descriptions she offers, seem to represent not only horrible events, but also the tortured mind of the writer. The fact that Esther is fixated on suicide and that suicide and death are constant topics in the novel are the most obvious reasons to see the work as autobiographical. There are specific events that happen to Esther in the novel that have been researched and have been determine to have happened to Plath in exactly the same manner or are very similar to events in Plath s life. Esther and Plath both had fathers who died when they were young. Esther and Plath both won writing internships at a magazine in New York City. Esther and Plath both had Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Luke Ferretter, author of Sylvia Plath s Fiction: A Critical Study, argues that Esther s description of her ECT is a way for Plath to tell her own story about the experience (21). Another validation of the autobiographical nature of The Bell Jar comes from an unexpected source in an unexpected way. Literary scholar Lois Ames offers a surprising insight into why many consider ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Education And Education In Jane Austen s Emma The 18th to 19th century was a revolutionary time period for women. Jane Austen s Emma was published during a time where women were campaigning for women s suffrage and for female education. Emma is a book about a girl that vows not to fall in love, but plays matchmaker for her friend and acquaintances. The book shows readers what 18th century England looked like for women. Upper class women were allowed to get an education; however, the education they were taught was vastly different than men s education. Women learned how to weave and learn French while men learned about government, culture, philosophy from around the world, etc. However, Emma also introduces revolutionary concepts like education for women and the radical ideas Mary Wollstonecraft s A Vindication of Women s Right demonstrated. The beginning of the book summarizes life in England for women during the 18th century. Women had little opportunity to develop a respectable position in society because of their lack of intellectual proficiency. This was because of the sexualized education present during 18th century England. The only way women could move through social hierarchy was through marriage. An important theme of Emma is marriage and status. In the text, Volume 1, Chapter 4, Emma states, The yeomanry are precisely the order of people with whom I feel I can have nothing to do. A degree or two lower, and a creditable appearance might interest me; I might hope to be useful to their families in some way or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. The Peasants Revolt The Movie Essay The Protestant Reformation was a religious movement to reform Catholicism leading to the creation of Protestantism. Many movies try to portray the religious movement, but one stands out from the others. The film Luther did not accurately portray the social and political aspects of the Protestant Reformation. The film does not give enough detail to historically represent the German peasants and nobility; it also dramatizes political characters and events to specifically target Luther s enemies, giving inaccurate information in the process. The film lacks the detail to historically portray the social aspects successfully because the plot orbits around Martin Luther; it omits different aspects of the Peasants Revolt, specifically the relationship between the German peasants and nobility. Throughout the film, Eric Till the director eliminates most of the interaction between the German peasants and nobility allowing the film to revolve around Luther. The Peasants Revolt erupted due to German nobles placing unrealistic taxes on peasants, but the movie prioritized another cause: The whole world s been turned upside down by that madman Luther (Luther 2003). Peasants from Wittenberg claimed that Luther s ideas lived on after his kidnapping and inspired peasants to separate themselves from the Catholic Church. Till disregards the importance of taxation and gives the viewers inaccurate information: Heading Wimpheling s complaints were protests against the Vatican s systematic ... Their child, Matilda was born in October of 2005. The two girls were the loves of his life which he was quite open about. During the following couple years, Heath s fame increased and the demand for his work grew, keeping him away from home more and more. This led to a break in the relationship between him and Michelle. They separated, and this sent Ledger into the darkest place he d ever been. He was crushed and depressed over the fact that he couldn t spend time with his daughter.
