The old woman across the street is sleeping with her dead boyfriend. In the story A Rose for
Emily, the author, William Faulkner, enlightens his readers about an old, burden of a woman
named Emily. He goes back into time and list events in her life that led up to the shocking
conclusion when the reader finds out she has been sleeping with her dead sweetheart. This main
ending leaves all readers in shock and their stomachs a little weak. In my instance the story built up
my curiosity with pieces to a puzzle that I tried to solve, and I was able to put them together at the
end to visualize the shocking conclusion.
My initial curios reaction to the short story A rose for Emily began right off the back when
Faulkner states when Miss Emily Grierson died (121). This was Faulkner s way of introducing
the reader to the main character Emily. This would leave any reader questioning who exactly is
this Emily girl, and how did she die. I realize Emily is the main character not too shortly after and
expected to learn more about her in the story. Another episode in the story that sparked my initial
curious reaction is when Faulkner explains to the reader that the townspeople thought of Emily as
a tradition, a duty, and a care; a sort of hereditary obligation upon the town (121) The four
descriptive words tradition, duty, care, and obligation, all triggered me to wonder why she was

literature, specifically literature from the Anglo Saxon period and the English Renaissance. These

the themes in the literature from these periods shift from the bravado of glory and honor to the
quieter aspects of life.

Research has proposed a visual phenomenon that implies that everyone has a visual blind spot a
small region in each eye that cannot see our surroundings. This phenomenon brings about the
theory of inattentional blindness; that we sometimes miss opportunities or events because we are
focusing on something else. The concept rose from Harvard psychologists Daniel J Simons and
Christopher F Chabris 1999 Gorillas in our midst study. Their aim was to study the psychology of
vision, doing so by creating four 75 seconds films involving two team of 3 players, one team
wearing white tops and the other wearing black, moving around passing 2 balls continuously. Two
conditions were used; after 44 48 s either a woman holding an umbrella would appear in the film
or a woman in a gorilla costume would appear. Participants were asked to watch and observe the

Conflict theory is the theory that human behavior in social contexts is the result of conflicts
between competing groups, as different social groups, be they class , gender or race defined,
have unequal power and access to power, yet all groups compete for limited resources. This
inevitably gives rise to tension and conflict, albeit often of the subtle variety, as oftentimes the
conflicts between groups have been institutionalized in society to such a degree that the conflicts
and tensions are such an expected part of society that the conflict, and inequality, itself
