Taipai 101 Tower is a 508m tall skyscraper located in Taipei, Taiwan. It has 101 floors and was designed by C.Y. Lee & Partners with structural engineering by Thornton Tomasetti. The tower uses tuned mass dampers and a strong foundation of 380 piles to resist earthquakes and typhoon winds common in coastal Taipei. It is a landmark in Taipei known for its eco-friendly design including energy efficiency, rainwater harvesting, and prohibiting smoking.

3. 1.The Engineering Design
 It’s height is 508m(1667 ft) from its ground to tip.
 It has got 101 floors , floor area is 412,500 m2 and 61 elevators.
 Architect - C.Y. Lee & Partners.
 Structural Designer – Thornton Tomasetti.
 Main Contracters – KTRT Joint Venture And Samsung C&T.
 This structure is owned by Taipei Financial Center Corporation and is managed
by international division of retail properties.
 It has got one of the world’s fastest moving Elevater which could travel at a
speed of 55 ft/sec.
 It is located in Xinyi District, Taipei, Taiwan.

5. 1.2 CONSTRUCTION PROCESS
 380 piles with 3 inch concrete slab.
 Mega columns - 8 cm thick steel and 10,000 psi concrete infill to
provide overturning.
 Walls – 5&7 degree slope.
 106,000 tons of steel ,grade 60-25% stronger.
 6 cranes on site – steel placement.
 Taipei being a coastal city the main problems are:
 Weak soil conditions,
 Typhoon winds,
 Large Potential Earth quakes.

6. 1.3 The column system of the
structure
 The columns are box sections constructed of steel plates ,
filled with concrete for added strength as well as stiffness till
the 62nd floor.
 On the perimeter, up to the 26th floor has the two ’super-
columns’ ,two ‘sub-super-columns’, and two corner columns.

7. 1.4 Various Systems in the
structure
 Slabs used composite and are typically 13.5 cm thick.
 Tunned Mass Damper systems are used in this structure.
 It uses 800 ton TMD which occupy 5 of it’s floors.
 The building have strong grip to the earth as it is piled for 40-
60m deep.
 Its an Energy Saving ”Office Tower”.
 Garbage Sorting and Recycling programme.
 Rain water Harvesting and Grey water Harvesting.
 An Eco-Friendly No-Smoking Environment.
