1. Public Health Midwives (PHMs) have played an important role in Sri Lanka's primary healthcare system for over a century, providing maternal and child health services, especially in rural areas where access to healthcare is limited. 2. The study finds that PHMs' performance management in Sri Lanka is inadequately implemented, with deficiencies in setting performance goals and standards, performance reviews, career growth opportunities, and compensation. 3. By strengthening PHM training programs and increasing their numbers through expanded public funding, Sri Lanka can better maintain essential rural healthcare workers and improve national health outcomes like reduced maternal and child mortality.
