The Norman Conquest of England in 1066 marked the end of the Viking Age and led to the development of a centralized, feudal state under William the Conqueror. The Normans, who were descended from Vikings that settled in northern France, invaded and defeated the Anglo-Saxons led by King Harold at the Battle of Hastings. William became King of England and established a Norman rule that changed the English language and system of government.
