William the Conqueror's victory over King Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 led to significant changes in England. The Normans established themselves as the new ruling class and brought French words into Old English. Many terms relating to war, government, religion and other domains were adopted from French. Over time, French words underwent sound changes as they integrated into English. The Norman Conquest had a lasting impact on English language and society through the introduction of numerous French-derived vocabulary.
