The Importance Of My Experience At A College Band Camp
Have you ever spent a week at a college band camp? Unfortunately, it does not resemble the iconic
scene from the classic film, American Pie. This narrative depicts why I decided to attend
Southwestern rather than other colleges such as Oklahoma State University, University of
Oklahoma, and Wichita State University. My fellow band friends and I took a three hour journey to
Weatherford from Blackwell to attend the Southwestern Band Camp for four days. As soon as we
reached our destination, I realized that this was where I wanted to be. When I stepped out of the
cramped car, a cool breeze blew across my face. On this ninety–four degree mid–summer day, band
kids were walking aimlessly trying to find the correct building to go to. As for myself, I knew
exactly where to go. Check–in was at 1PM in the Oklahoma Hall and luckily for us, I had scoped
out the campus on Google maps to try and figure everything out. I knew once we exited the car that
we needed to cross the street and head towards the building that looked like an "x". Once we had
checked in and placed our suitcases placed in the assigned dorms, we got our instruments out and
headed towards the Fine Arts building. Auditions were separated by the type of instrument you
played. Unfortunately, I had to separate from my friends since I played the bass clarinet and they
played the saxophone. I had lost my way several times. Students were pacing the hallways and loud
jabber between fellow instrumentalists about the etude could

Project At Tulsa County Youth Services
I acquired my service learning hours by participating in a group that volunteered at Tulsa County
Youth Services. My group encountered many difficulties and challenges before finally securing a
project at Tulsa County Youth Services that would allow for us to fulfill our eight–hour requirement
for the service–learning project. Initially, we had planned to volunteer at Rogers County Youth
Services, but these plans dissipated as we learned that it was extremely difficult to simply set up a
meeting between our group and their organization's director. Luckily, I came across group volunteer
opportunities at Tulsa County Youth Services while contemplating how we would be able to fulfill
our community service hours with the difficulties that were then experiencing with Rogers County
Youth Services. Looking back, I think it was easier to set up a group project with Tulsa County
Youth Services because they are a much larger–scale organization when being compared to Rogers
County Youth Services. Tulsa County Youth Service's communications coordinator was easily able
to set our group up with date, time, and project that would fulfill the requirements for the group
project. Collectively speaking, our entire group felt privileged to share this experience at Tulsa
County Youth Services and we all were very impressed by the tremendous amount of services that
were offered by Tulsa County Youth Services. Our group decided to complete our volunteer service
with Tulsa County Youth Services by

Trail Of Tears Analysis
Trusting, amicable, and helpful outcomes in life are not always expected, but almost always
exceeded. This relates much with the storyline of this saddening era in our history – which can be
represented with segments from this story. The Trail of Tears refers to the forceful relocation and
eventual movement of the Native American ancestral communities, from the South Eastern regions
of the U.S, as a result of the enactment of the Indian Removal Act in the year 1830. In the year
1838, in line with Andrew Jackson's policy of the Indians' removal, the Cherokee community was
forced to surrender its land to the east of Mississippi River and migrate to the present day
Oklahoma. This journey was referred to as the 'Trail of Tears,' mainly due to its devastating effects it
had to the Indian people. The migrants faced extreme hunger, diseases and fatigue due to the forced
march while more than 4,000 people died. John G. Burnett, a young, staunch, sagacious soldier
during the Trail of Tears, helps throughout traumatic and emotional experiences at just the age of 18.
It was horrendous. His actions, however, were the complete opposite. In the story "A Soldier
Recalls: The Trail of Tears," the theme can be looked at as: 'Trusting, amicable, and helpful
outcomes in life are not always expected, but are almost always exceeded.' due to the outstanding
first person, emotive storyline that is represented by this proposed theme. John G. Burnett was not
only a auxiliary adolescent man, he was

The Dust Bowl
The Dust Bowl was a treacherous storm, which occurred in the years of the 1930's, which affected
the Midwestern people, an example the farmers, which taught us new technologies and methods of
farming. John Steinbeck wrote in his novel from 1939 The Grapes of Wrath: "And then the
dispossessed were drawn west– from Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas; from Nevada and
Arkansas, families, tribes, dusted out, Caravans, carloads, and homeless. Totals of 20,000, 50,000,
100,000, and 200,000 people. They streamed over the mountains, hungry and restless. We got no
place to live. Like ants scurrying for work, food, and most of all for land." The early thirties opened
with prosperity and growth. At the time the Midwest was full of agricultural ... Show more content

Although the dirt storms were fewer in 1934, it was the year, which brought the Dust Bowl national
attention. In May, a severe storm blew dirt from Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas as Far as New York
City and Washington D.C. In spite of the terrific storm in May, the year 1934 was pleasant respite
from the blowing dirt and tornadoes of the previous year. But nature had another trick up her sleeve,
the year was extremely hot with new records being made and broken at regular intervals. Before the
year had run its course, hundreds of people in Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas had died
from the heat. In 1935, this storm was followed by another and another in rapid succession. A
description of the storm of coming was made by a farmer:" The storm caused a tremendous amount
of damage and suffering. A giant dust storm engulfs Boise City. Tremendous winds rolled up to two
miles high, and stretched out a hundred miles with speeds faster than 50 miles per hour. The storms
destroyed vast areas of the Great Plains farmland. The methods of fighting the dust were as many,
and varied as were the means of finding a way to get something to eat and wear. Every possible
crack was filled, sheets were placed over the windows and blankets were hung behind the doors.
Often the places were so tightly plugged against all the dust that the houses became extremely hot
and stuffy. The clouds appeared on the horizons with a thunderous roar. Turbulent dust clouds rolled

Essay on Southeastern Native American Literature
Southeastern Native American Literature
Native American literature from the Southeastern United States is deeply rooted in the oral traditions
of the various tribes that have historically called that region home. While the tribes most integrally
associated with the Southeastern U.S. in the American popular mind––the FIVE CIVILIZED
TRIBES (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole)––were forcibly relocated to Indian
Territory (present–day Oklahoma) from their ancestral territories in the American South,
descendents of those tribes have created compelling literary works that have kept alive their tribal
identities and histories by incorporating traditional themes and narrative elements. While reflecting
profound awareness of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additional books have showcased the storytelling traditions of other tribes, including Creation
Myths and Legends of the Creek Indians, edited by Bill Grantham (2002); Nations Remembered: An
Oral History of the Cherokees, Chickasaws, Choctaws, Creeks, and Seminoles in Oklahoma, 1865–
1907, edited by Theda Perdue (1993); and Native American Legends: Southeastern Legends––Tales
from the Natchez, Caddo, Biloxi, Chickasaw, and Other Nations, edited by George E. Lankford and
W. K. McNeil (1987).
Members of the Five Civilized Tribes were at the vanguard of Native American literature during the
nineteenth century. The earliest work of fiction in English by an author of native descent is generally
thought to be Poor Sarah, or Religion Exemplified in the Life and Death of an Indian Woman, a
1823 pamphlet probably written by Elias Boudinot (ca. 1804–1839). A formally educated member
of the Cherokee tribe who was born in Georgia, Boudinot was the editor of the bilingual newspaper
The Cherokee Phoenix, the first periodical published by Native Americans. Poor Sarah was not
commercial fiction––it was a propagandistic tract from a religious advocate. The first overtly
commercial work of fiction written by a Native American was Life and Adventures of Joaquin
Murieta, the Celebrated California Bandit (1854), a best–selling novel set in California during

Cherokee Removal Speech
The Cherokee Indians have lived on the North American continent far longer than anyone of British
decent. Yet they were removed in a brutal manner from their homeland, on which they have lived for
countless centuries. This journey of removal is called the Trail of Tears, which had a horrendous
effect on the Cherokees.
In 1791, the United States began negotiations with the Cherokee nation. However, Americans began
moving onto Cherokee land and forcing them away due to want/need of land for farming and other
purposes. This began a series of events that led to their removal. In 1828 the state of Georgia passed
a law that stated, "as of June 1, 1830 the Cherokee Nation would be null and void, it would no
longer be seen as a nation to the state of Georgia."
During the nineteenth century as many as one hundred thousand Natives were forcefully moved
westward. Those removed came from five different tribes. These were the Cherokee, Chickasaw,
Choctaw, Creek, and the Seminoles who were forced to move during the decade of the Indian
Removal Act of 1830.The tribe that was most affected by this was the Cherokee was a tribe that who
experienced one of the most horrific removals in our nation's history. The Cherokee stated, "The
Cherokee removal was named Nunna dual Tsung (Trail Where They Cried)." Although to us it is
known as the Trail of Tears.
The Cherokees faced the final blow in 1835 when the Treaty of New Echota was passed. This treaty
stated that the Cherokees would receive

The Cherokee Language Is Still Alive
The question is if the Cherokee language is still alive. Is this language still spoken? Yes, it is. The
Cherokee language is classified linguistically as a member of the Iroquoian family, spoken by the
Cherokee people, originally inhabiting Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina,
Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee. As a consequence of colonization, however, the
Cherokee nation almost suffered destruction during the infamous Trail of Tears, 1838–1839, the
forced removal of more than fifteen thousand people. Now, in the twenty–first century, the Cherokee
make up one of the biggest Native American tribes within the U.S. with over 300,000 members.
Despite their language's gravely endangered status, they are within the top ten of large groups of
indigenous language speakers. However, they had to overcome many struggles. Among members of
Cherokee Nation in the northeast of Oklahoma, there are only a few under the age of 40 who can be
considered fluent speakers of the Cherokee language (Cherokee Nation, 2003). This survey by the
Cherokee Nation was conducted of 115,026 Cherokee citizens who live within the 14 counties of the
Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. Thus, children are not acquiring the language at home as there is a
lack of parents being native speakers. Consequently, UNESCO (2003) labels Cherokee as "definitely
endangered." But how come the parents and even the parents of parents do not speak their native
tongue anymore? To answer this, one must know

Cherokee Population Losses During Trail Of Tears : A New...
Thornton, Russell "Cherokee Population Losses During Trail of Tears: A New Perspective and a
New Estimate." Ethnohistory, Vol. 31, No. 4 (Autumn, 1984): 289–300
Currently, when the losses suffered by the Cherokee Nation as a result of their forced removal are
discussed, there is a focus on the loss in numbers. However, Russell Thornton's "Cherokee
Population Losses During Trail of Tears: A New Perspective and a New Estimate" clearly presents a
new, suitably researched perspective that argues the focus should not be only on those that died, but
also on those that never lived. Thornton is a professor at UCLA in the Anthropology department. He
has a number of degrees related to this study, including a Ph.D. in Sociology and a postdoctoral in
Social Relations from Harvard, and specializes in Native American studies. He is clearly
appropriately acquainted with this field, and his knowledge of the subject matter is evident in this
piece. However, he also cites a number of papers and books by other authors, so as not to rely purely
on his knowledge.
Thornton asserts in his abstract that the number of Cherokees who died may have been twice the
currently accepted number. However, this is not what he says the number of Cherokees lost should
be based on. He argues that the losses of the Cherokee Nation should be determined based upon the
number of Cherokee who would have lived, not the ones who died, a vital distinction when one
considers the drastic reduction in birth rate

Texas Biomes
Our ecosystem is described depending on the location we are located in. There is different plants,
animals, and environments in different environmental regions. For this paper we are focusing on the
six different biomes structures we have in the state of Texas. The first biome I am going to discuss is
the Central Prairies and Woodlands biome. This biome is located in the middle of biome 2 and 3
covering all of the coastal area from the Gulf of Mexico. The precipitation gradient in this area is the
highest in the state of Texas. Averaging from 75–115 cm/yr. this concludes that it's a high
precipitation area which means that the land in that area is green and hydrated. Since this biome
extends from the south were the coast is all the way to the top of eastern Texas the temperature
varies depending on the location you are looking at the further north its colder and the more south
you go the hotter, humid it gets. The kinds of plants that are in this regions are mostly tall green ...

This biome is located to the western part of texas. The elevations range from 2500 feet to more than
8749 feet at the Guadalupe peak. The vegetation in this region are creosote–tarbush desert scrub,
deser grassland, yucca, and juniper. Ranching is the primary industry in the trans–pecos region. The
animals located in this region are the eastern collared lizard, rat snake, Mexican long–tongued bat,
Texas antelope squirrel and the bighorn sheep. Now the last biome is the Western Plains located in
the North Western part of the state. This area has a moderate amount of rainfall with 40–55 cm/yr.
This biome is home to the rolling plains and the high plains. Elevations range from 3000 to 4500
feet above sea level. The vegetation in this plains are shortgrass prairies dominated by buffalo grass.

The Impact Of The Tulsa Race Riot On The Greenwood District
How did the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 impact the Greenwood District
The Tulsa Race Riot impacted so many people and all it gets is a paragraph or one page in an
Oklahoma history textbook. This event put Tulsa on the map and it barely gets any recognition. How
are people supposed to change the world if information is constantly hidden? The riot didn't
completely leave a negative impact. Don't be fooled, it was terrible and extremely destructive, but
some good came out of it. For example, in my case I swell with pride when I hear about how
successful and booming the black community was in Tulsa. It makes me appreciate my hometown
and what it has to offer. The Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 impacted the Greenwood District by creating
more roots in Tulsa, destroying the lives and homes of families, and hiding the significance of
Greenwood and how prosperous it was.
Where does someone get their views, traditions, and fears from if they don't identify with a culture?
There is literally a culture for everything. There's a millennial culture, gaming culture, food culture,
etc.–you name it! Culture itself is the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual
achievement regarded collectively. Whether one knows it or not, they identify with something. In
the book "Tulsa's Historic Greenwood District" by Hannibal B. Johnson it states "A people without
the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots–Marcus Garvey."

Abstract
In this paper I will discuss the history of the Cherokee Indians in the United States. First by
describing the tribes pre–Columbian history to include the settlement dates and known cultural
details. Then a brief description of the cultural and religious beliefs of the tribe will be given, as well
as the tribe's history after contact with settlers. Finally discussing John Ross, who he was and how
he affected the Cherokee Indians.
Cherokee Indians The word Cherokee is believed to have evolved from a Choctaw word meaning
"Cave People". It was picked up and used by Europeans and eventually accepted the adopted by

Use of a caste system was a part of the Cherokees 'social structures before contacts with whites. The
white south created its own social caste system with white planters as the aristocracy and the African
slave at the peon (Bullard, F.B. 1989). The colonists who settled in the south were different than
their counterparts in the North. The main heritage of the southern colonists was the Celtic in contrast
to the English heritage of the colonists who settled in the north. The Celtic heritage these southerner
colonists brought to North America from Europe had a profound effect on their folkways as well as
influencing their Indian neighbors. Traditional Cherokee lands had incorporated ass of Kentucky,
much of Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, North Carolina and a small part of Virginia
and what is now West Virginia. The spatial proximity was one reason for the development of an
identity with the Southern colonist and their institutions and traditions (Bullard, F.B. 1989). Indian
agent for the United States, George Butler, commented that he felt the majority of the material
progress in the Indian Territory was a result of slavery. The age of masters measured in the
distribution in slaves provides evidence for the upward mobility of slavery for the Cherokee. The
principal difference from the white south was the treatment of slaves in the Cherokee Nation. The
Cherokee avoided mistreatment of the slaves and Major Ridge's wife

Community College Trip Advantages
On February 23rd, 37 McAlester High School Juniors visited the Southeast Campus of Oklahoma's
largest community college. Tulsa Community College is not only the state's largest community
college with better than 26,000 students, it is one of Oklahoma's most aggressive colleges offering
more than 220 Associate Degrees and professional certifications. The excursion was just one of
EOSC's GEAR UP for Success grant's annual planned college visits. As part of the mission of the
GEAR UP Program, students are offered tours of the various colleges and universities across
Southeastern Oklahoma's vast region. By knowing what is "out there" and the different advantages
and disadvantages for each of the institutions of higher education, students are able to make better
informed choices in selecting the college or university that offers the best fit for the individual
student.
The Southeast Campus of TCC offers students associate degrees in Allied Health, Business and

On How the American Indians Were Removed from Their Land
"One by one Indian peoples were removed to the West. The Delaware, the Ottawa, Shawnee,
Pawnee and Potawatomi, the Sauk and Fox, Miami and Kickapoo, the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek
and Seminole. In all some 90 thousand Indians were relocated. The Cherokee were among the last to
go. Some reluctantly agreed to move. Others were driven from their homes at bayonet point. Almost
two thousands of them died along the route they remembered as the Trail of Tears." For decades, the
state of Georgia sought to enforce its authority over the Cherokee Nation, but its efforts had little
effect until the election of President Andrew Jackson, a longtime supporter of Indian removal. In
1838 the U.S. government forced the Cherokee Indians out of their land ... Show more content on

He was going to relocate the eastern tribes beyond the Mississippi River. Another President of the
United States, James Monroe, wrote a letter to Andrew Jackson that stated, "I have long viewed
treaties with the Indians an absurdity not to be reconciled to the principles of our government." The
Choctaw relocation began in 1830, seven years later the Chickasaw were removed. In 1836 the
Creek were removed by force that was followed by the negotiations that started in 1832. The
Seminole removal triggered a 7 year war that ended in 1843. They had been given 2 years to pack
and move, and after the two years they would be moved by force. The government sent 7,000 troops
to start the moving process. The Indians were forced off their land at bayonet point. They were not
given any extra time to pack, they started loading and the whites took their homes and lands as soon
as they were gone. Being forced out of their land and to another affected the Indians more than most
people know. About four thousand Cherokee people died on their way to the new land, some died of
cold, hunger, or diseases. Some of the Indians later committed arson and murder because of how
hard it was for them to get over the treatment of their people. In

Trail Of Tears Research Paper
The Trail of Tears was the forced relocation and movement of Native Americans, including many
members of the Cherokee, Muscogee (Creek), Seminole, and Choctaw nations among others in the
United States, from their homelands to Indian Territory (present day Oklahoma) in the Western
United States. The phrase originated from a description of the removal of the Choctaw Nation in
1831.[1] Many Native Americans suffered from exposure, disease, and starvation while on route to
their destinations, and many died, including 4,000 of the 15,000 relocated Cherokee.[2]
In 1831, the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee–Creek, and Seminole (sometimes
collectively referred to as the Five Civilized Tribes) were living as autonomous nations in what
would be called the American Deep South. The process of cultural transformation (proposed by
George Washington and Henry Knox) was gaining momentum, especially among the Cherokee and
Choctaw.[3] Andrew Jackson continued the removal of the Native Americans with the passage of
the Indian Removal Act of 1830. In 1831 the Choctaw were the first to be removed, and they
became the model for all other removals. After the Choctaw, the Seminole were removed in 1832,
the Creek in 1834, then the Chickasaw in 1837, and finally the Cherokee in 1838.[4] After removal,
some Native Americans remained in their ancient homelands – the Choctaw are found in
Mississippi, the Seminole in Florida, the Creek in Alabama, and the Cherokee in North Carolina. A

The Indian Removal Act: Where are the Civilized Tribes Now?
Where are they now? In the 1830s, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act which forcibly
relocated the 5 "Civilized" Indian Tribes: Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole. Even
though they were slowly integrating American culture and were showing great progress toward
civilization. The Indians were forced to adapt to the new, foreign environment they were sent to or
be killed by American soldiers because for one they were considered "dangerous savages". To them
their environment shaped their sense of identity, so when they were relocated they had a undergo a
drastic change to survive which had great effects on the tribes' futures. For example, the Cherokee

Especially since the difficulty they faced trying to adapt to their new environment could have
spelled doom for the 5 "Civilized" Indian Tribes. Another effect that the Indian Removal Act caused
is that it changed how the Indians lived their lives. Initially, when the Indians first settled in their
new lands they faced some difficulty trying to adapt. For example, when the Cherokee planted crops
along Arkansas River, the crops were washed away because the river regularly flooded. For the
Choctaws, they had to leave behind their homes, field, crops, and whatever livestock they possessed.
For the Chickasaws, their was no land in the new Indian Territory for them to occupy, so they sold
their land to the U.S. and used the money to lease land from the Choctaws. Now they can live on the
annual money payments without the need to establish farms. To the Chickasaws, the removal led
them to a cash economy and a political situation that lessened their dependance on the natural
environment. The removal act caused the Cherokee to modify their farming methods to suit the new
environment, caused the Choctaws to restock their supplies from scratch, and changed Chickasaws
from a tribe that relied on agriculture to one that relied on business. Therefore, it changing how the
Indians lived their lives.
The last effect of the Indian Removal Act is that it had negative effects on the economy. The Indian

Examples Of Native American Oppression
The Oppression of Native Americans in Early America
An often forgotten group of oppressed people are Native Americans. Many gloss over or just ignore
the injustices they have faced. Such examples of their oppression are prevalent but often neglected.
Such as how they were faced with many injustices from american settlers as they tried to force them
from their land , the countless massacres, and lastly the atrocities they faced on the trail of tears.
To go more indepth about this topic Native Americans were faced with many injustices. They were
being forced from their land by Georgia and many other states:
"In the 1820s and 1830s Georgia conducted a relentless campaign to remove the Cherokees, who
held territory within the borders of Georgia, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows how little European settlers thought of Native Americans. Even their dead were given no
consideration and they were stolen from even as they were being forced from their land. This was
just adding to the numerous amounts of ways Native Americans were oppressed as they were
stripped of even basic rights in death and their plight ignored due to greed. This making their already
dangerous trip worse as they lost valuable sources of food and transportation without their cattle and
horses.
In conclusion the oppression of Native Americans is an often overlooked subject. It's important to
learn about this and be aware of it because many Native Americans still live on reservations. Their
oppression has not yet dissipated completely and not until recently, as recently as 1962, were they
allowed to vote in every state. So we must be well informed in order to continue to dissipate Native
American oppression and try to correct the mistakes of the

Texas Geography
The geography of Texas is hugely varied, from beaches to mountains. You can break Texas down
into four main regions, divided by rivers, escarpments and other natural features. Texas has all the
locations you might need: forests, cliffs, mountainous desert that could pass for Mars, NASA's
Johnson Space Center and even a coastline. The Lone Star state is often divided into four regions:
the Gulf Coastal Plains, the Interior Lowlands, also called the North Central Plains, the Great Plains
and the Basin and Range or Mountains and Basins region. Each region has unique landforms and
natural features. The first region of Texas is the Gulf Coastal Plains. The Gulf Coast stretches along
the Gulf of Mexico for hundreds of miles. Cities such as Corpus Christi, Galveston, and Houston are
in the Gulf Coast region. Near the gulf waters you can see marshes, barrier islands, estuaries, where
salty sea water and fresh river water meet, and bays. As you travel west, you can see prairies and
grasslands. The Gulf Coast is home to many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Farming is common here because of the fertile soil. So there are many kinds of crops grown in this
region. There also commonly short prairie grass. Climate in the region/area can be extreme. In the
winters its cold, but in the summer it can be the hottest area in Texas. The average rainfall is 20 – 30
inches a year and during the spring there can be violent storms and tornadoes. Landforms in the

The Forceful Effects Of The Trail Of Tears
The Trail of Tears refers to the forceful relocation and eventual movement of the Native American
communities from the South Eastern regions of the U.S. as a result of the enactment of the Indian
Removal Act in the year 1830. In the year 1838, in line with Andrew Jackson's policy of the Indians'
removal, the Cherokee community was forced to surrender its land to the east of Mississippi River
and migrate to the present day Oklahoma. This journey was referred to as the "Trail of Tears" mainly
due to its devastating effects it had to the Indian people. The migrants faced extreme hunger,
diseases and exhaustion due to the forced march while more than 50,000 people died (Cave, 2003).
The Trail of Tears resulted in a devastating effect for the Indians such as extreme hunger, diseases
and exhaustion due to long walk and massive injustices and abuse of fundamental human rights.
According to Perdue (2008), the Trail of Tears is regarded as one of the tragic eras in the U.S.
history mainly due to the forceful relocation of the Indians. This is also considered as the beginning
of the Indian extermination by the U.S. government even though they had lived in the country
several centuries before the white settlers set their foot in America. After the American Revolution
and the eventual creation of the U.S., the Indians were regarded as a separate nation within a
sovereign country even though they were fully committed to a peaceful coexistence with the white
settlers. However, the white

The Destruction Of The Black Nation
They can still hear the screams. The smoke still burns their lungs. The events are a recurring
nightmare. While concealed from the 700,000 citizens dwelling and working in Tulsa, Oklahoma,
they trod upon the grounds of the site of one of the most horrid race riots in America's history.
However, the witnesses of this atrocity would never be able to rid the images that were burned into
their minds. The Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 transpired in what was considered to be the Promise Land
for the black populous (See Appendix A). For years the African Americans had struggled to build a
safe haven for themselves, yet their efforts were destroyed in a single night (See Appendix B).1

On November 16, 1907, Oklahoma received its statehood with much rejoicing from whites and
blacks alike.7 However, blacks soon realized that Oklahoma statehood may not be ideal. Within a
month, Oklahoma's first senate bill had been approved which stated that "every railway company,
urban or suburban car company, street car or interurban car or railway company . . . shall provide
separate coaches or compartments as hereinafter provided for the accommodation of the white and

Oklahoma despite the segregation law.
Declared as "The Black Wall Street," the Greenwood section of Tulsa was the center of African
American life in Oklahoma.9 Since the white section of Tulsa did not possess stores catering to
blacks, several entrepreneuring black males decided to construct a district that indulged the needs of
the African Americans.10 Therefore, Greenwood was established on a street called Greenwood

An Informative Essay On Wild Turkeys
The wild turkey is an animal most people have heard of because of hunting reasons, but do you
know the basic facts? The wild turkey species has 6 subspecies; these include the eastern wild
turkey, Osceola (Florida) wild turkey, Rio Grande wild turkey, Merriam's wild turkey, Gould's wild
turkey, and Ocellated wild turkey. These turkeys are different in color but are mostly the same
because they are the same species of animal. The wild turkey is dark in color, either brown, black, or
a similar color. Their wings are dark and are boldly barred with white. The rump and tail of the
animal are tipped with a rustic color or white. The final part of the animal, the bare skin of the head
and neck, are varieties of red, blue, or gray. Both male and female measurements for the wild turkey
species are the same. The length is 43.3–45.3 inches. The wingspan is 49.2–56.7 inches. The weight
is 88.2–381 ounces. These birds are very large, round animals with long legs and wide rounded tails,

Native Americans And Native American Nations
Introduction
Native Americans have existed for thousands of years, developing a rich heritage that characterizes
the value of the group. Today it is estimated that there are more than 2.5 million Native Americans
living in the United–States and this population is steadily growing. Although they account for only 1
percent of the total U.S. population, they have been described as including 50 percent of the
diversity that exists in this country. This diversity among Native American nations is illustrated by
250 languages and more than 500 tribes. One of these tribes is called the Cherokee Indians and this
research paper is going to deal with them. Cherokee were probably the most acculturated Indians in
the nineteenth century. They were one of the first Indian groups to successfully transform their
aboriginal landscape into a new cultural landscape that sometimes surpassed their white frontier
neighbors. They had a lots of powerful traditions focusing on the tribe first, the clan second, and the
family third in terms of importance and duty. The family was the centrality of the circle and the
individual was traditionally simply not allowed to upset the order of the family. Traditional beliefs
permit us to think that "being Indians" was obviously not about the blood that flew in their veins,
but how they lived in a cultural and traditional way in respecting the sacredness of the American
way of life.
However, two hundred years ago, the Cherokee Indians were removed from their

Voices From The Heartland By Julie Carson Essay
Voices from the Heartland is an anthology of essays that relates the stories of Oklahoma women.
The authors share their experiences about their lives in Oklahoma: childhood experiences,
relationships with neighbors, devastating times, life–changing events. The essays are organized
under a set of themes, not limiting the contributors to a specific topic. Some of the pieces are light–
hearted, such as Julie Carson's essay about her left–handedness, while others deal with the struggles
the authors have gone through because of their gender. While the gender issues accentuated in the
book are conveyed by Oklahoma women, they are relevant to women everywhere, in America, other
industrialized nations, as well as developing countries.
Women are often confined to a set of ideals and expectations because of one simple fact: they are
women. Many of the women who contributed to this book have faced gender stereotyping and
discrimination. Instead of allowing traditional social norms to confine them to an unwanted lifestyle,
they challenged these conventional ideals, risking failure and facing condemnation from strangers as
well as people close to them. People often associate feminism with negativity and pessimism. In
"Feminism is a Dirty Word," Cindy Simon Rosenthal talks about how people refuse to define
themselves as a "feminist." However, the movement does not advocate for women's special
privileges. Feminism celebrates social equality and supports the utilization of all talents.

I Want To Be A Veterinarian
The career I chose to do when I get older is to be a Veterinarian. The job title is a "Vet". This career
is about helping animals stay healthy. I chose this career because I've always had an interest in
learning all about animals, more importantly my love for them. Also, I want to be able to help save
them and find new ways to keep them healthy. My parents and some other family members have
always said I have a special bond with animals. Veterinarian services are held in either a clinic,
hospital, or even sometimes mobile. When working in a hospital they do more severe surgeries
and/or treatments. For example, if a dog got hit by a car causing a life threatening injury more than
likely it would need immediate care. When working in a clinic, they mainly do check ups and minor
surgeries. For example, a dog getting spayed or neutered. "Work can be emotionally stressful." says
(BLS). Veterinarians work full time "40 hours a week" says (Veterinarian), but if I was to work in a
hospital, I would be on call for the most part, because "emergencies can happen at anytime." says
(Mckay, Rosenburg). "May have to respond to emergencies outside of scheduled hours." says
(BLS). Veterinarian clinics and hospitals are all over the country. In order to be a successful
veterinarian, they must find respite. The work of a veterinarian is stressful and in order to be one

Westward Expansion
The United States encouraged settlement in the West during and after the Civil War. The Homestead
Act of 1862 gave families up to 160 acres of land if they agreed to live on it for five years. The
completion of the railroads to the West following the Civil War opened vast areas of the region to
settlement and economic development. White settlers from the East poured across the Mississippi to
mine, farm, and ranch. African–American settlers also came West from the Deep South, convinced
by promoters of all–black Western towns that prosperity could be found there. Chinese railroad
workers further added to the diversity of the region's population.
Westward expansion was especially important in the Reconstruction Era that followed the Civil War.
Additionally, it contributed to the conflagration of the many issues that ignited the Civil War; as the
United States gained more territory, the question of whether the new states would be free soil or
slave–holding states was hotly debated. After the Civil War, the West offered inspiration to citizens
hopeful of taking part in and expanding the ideals of a free labor society. As the Republican party
and special interests' groups desired a more active government, those who were opposed saw the
West as a place untouched by government authority. It was America in its most raw, idealist form.
Settlement from the East transformed the Great Plains. The huge herds of American bison that
roamed the plains were virtually wiped out, and

Character Analysis Of August Osage County
August: Osage County is a well–acted play that is generally about a family that falls apart. That is
something that almost everybody has in common. This play could very well be realistic according to
the situations that were being displayed, dialogue being used and the setting of the play. The play
speaks about real people in everyday situations, dealing with common problems that almost
everybody's family has once had to deal with such as suicide, divorce, children growing up faster
than expected and much more. These types of situations go on in our everyday lives. Also, within
this play it presents an everyday conversation in a succinct, direct way. The dialogue hits with full
force within the context of the play and the drama plays out between the characters. Additionally,
the most realistic factor in the play was the set design. The setting is in a large county home outside
of Pawhuska, Oklahoma which reflects the society and culture in which people live. The set design
fitting in with the play being almost a three–story home with a kitchen, dining room, Violet's room
door and an attic. This everyday setting helped contribute to the power of the play, making it easier
for the audience to be able to understand and relate to. Watching the August: Osage County play
wasn't as interesting as the script itself, but it was many aspects in the play that kept my attention.
Pertaining to acting, Violet's character was played to perfection. With her character being sixty–three

"Quantie's weak body shuddered from a blast of cold wind. Still, the proud wife of the Cherokee
chief John Ross wrapped a woolen blanket around her shoulders and grabbed the reins." Leading the
final group of Cherokee Indians from their home lands, Chief John Ross thought of an old story that
was told by the chiefs before him, of a place where the earth and sky met in the west, this was the
place where death awaits. He could not help but fear that this place of death was where his beloved
people were being taken after years of persecution and injustice at the hands of white Americans, the

Many Americans saw this act as the government sanctioning of brutality and inhuman treatment of
the Indian people and actively protested its passing.
President Jackson thought of the Indians as children who needed his guidance and justified their
removal as a way of protecting the Indians from the hatred and harassment of the white Americans
and as a measure that would allow them to govern themselves in a new land. A passage from the
Removal Act reads as follows, "no state could achieve proper culture, civilization, and progress, as
long as Indians remained within its boundaries". This statement gives a more accurate description of
how the American Congress and the President thought of all Indians in America and the Removal
Act gave them the justification to further American expansion into Indian tribal lands.
By the late 1830s, more than 40 treaties were signed by what was then called the Five Civilized
Tribes, which consisted of the Cherokee, Choctaws, Chickasaws, Creeks, and Seminoles. Many of
these tribes exchanged over 40,000 miles of land in seven states. Three–quarters of Alabama and
Florida, as well as parts of Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Kentucky and North Carolina became
property of the United States after they were traded for lands west of the Mississippi river, which is
now Northern Oklahoma. These treaties were signed by the Five Tribes in hopes that the American
government would allow them to retain some of their indigenous lands,

Cherokee Population Losses During Trail Of Tears : A New...
Thornton asserts in his abstract that the number of Cherokees who died may have
been twice the currently accepted number. However, this is not what he says the number of
Cherokees . He argues that the losses of the Cherokee Nation should be determined based upon the
number of Cherokee who would have lived, not the ones who died, a vital distinction when one
considers the drastic reduction in birth rate immediately following removal. However, when reading
this article, one must take into account the potential for bias outside of confidence in one's research.
It is possible that as a Cherokee,

Human Trafficking Is The Second Largest Form Of Organized...
Human Trafficking in Oklahoma
Individuals all over the world are at risk of being abducted and sold into some form of human
trafficking or forced prostitution. Worldwide, human trafficking is the second largest form of
organized crime. This is especially true in Oklahoma. Interstate Highways Forty, Thirty–five, and
Forty–four all three run through Oklahoma, stretching from coast to coast, and from Mexico to
Canada. These highways make Oklahoma an ideal crossroads for human trafficking. Because of
these highways, new cases of this epidemic emerge in Oklahoma every day. For example, in June of
2015, five residents of Oklahoma City were indicted by a federal grand jury for operating an escort
service, providing underage females to men in exchange for money (Justice News). Everyone is at
risk of becoming a victim of human trafficking, especially females. I am particularly concerned
about this ever–increasing trend for the safety of my wife and other members of my family. There
are steps, however, that we as Oklahomans can take to protect ourselves, and those we care about to
reduce this despicable crime. The first step we must take is to increase public awareness of the
problem. Like so many other problems, people assume that such a tragedy could never happen to
them. Second, Oklahoma State Legislature must increase the penalty upon conviction of human
trafficking. Finally, Oklahoma Legislature must prohibit gentleman's clubs statewide. The society
we live in views females as

My Experience At Band Camp Helped Me Choose Southwestern

  • 1. The Importance Of My Experience At A College Band Camp Have you ever spent a week at a college band camp? Unfortunately, it does not resemble the iconic scene from the classic film, American Pie. This narrative depicts why I decided to attend Southwestern rather than other colleges such as Oklahoma State University, University of Oklahoma, and Wichita State University. My fellow band friends and I took a three hour journey to Weatherford from Blackwell to attend the Southwestern Band Camp for four days. As soon as we reached our destination, I realized that this was where I wanted to be. When I stepped out of the cramped car, a cool breeze blew across my face. On this ninety–four degree mid–summer day, band kids were walking aimlessly trying to find the correct building to go to. As for myself, I knew exactly where to go. Check–in was at 1PM in the Oklahoma Hall and luckily for us, I had scoped out the campus on Google maps to try and figure everything out. I knew once we exited the car that we needed to cross the street and head towards the building that looked like an "x". Once we had checked in and placed our suitcases placed in the assigned dorms, we got our instruments out and headed towards the Fine Arts building. Auditions were separated by the type of instrument you played. Unfortunately, I had to separate from my friends since I played the bass clarinet and they played the saxophone. I had lost my way several times. Students were pacing the hallways and loud jabber between fellow instrumentalists about the etude could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Project At Tulsa County Youth Services I acquired my service learning hours by participating in a group that volunteered at Tulsa County Youth Services. My group encountered many difficulties and challenges before finally securing a project at Tulsa County Youth Services that would allow for us to fulfill our eight–hour requirement for the service–learning project. Initially, we had planned to volunteer at Rogers County Youth Services, but these plans dissipated as we learned that it was extremely difficult to simply set up a meeting between our group and their organization's director. Luckily, I came across group volunteer opportunities at Tulsa County Youth Services while contemplating how we would be able to fulfill our community service hours with the difficulties that were then experiencing with Rogers County Youth Services. Looking back, I think it was easier to set up a group project with Tulsa County Youth Services because they are a much larger–scale organization when being compared to Rogers County Youth Services. Tulsa County Youth Service's communications coordinator was easily able to set our group up with date, time, and project that would fulfill the requirements for the group project. Collectively speaking, our entire group felt privileged to share this experience at Tulsa County Youth Services and we all were very impressed by the tremendous amount of services that were offered by Tulsa County Youth Services. Our group decided to complete our volunteer service with Tulsa County Youth Services by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Trail Of Tears Analysis Trusting, amicable, and helpful outcomes in life are not always expected, but almost always exceeded. This relates much with the storyline of this saddening era in our history – which can be represented with segments from this story. The Trail of Tears refers to the forceful relocation and eventual movement of the Native American ancestral communities, from the South Eastern regions of the U.S, as a result of the enactment of the Indian Removal Act in the year 1830. In the year 1838, in line with Andrew Jackson's policy of the Indians' removal, the Cherokee community was forced to surrender its land to the east of Mississippi River and migrate to the present day Oklahoma. This journey was referred to as the 'Trail of Tears,' mainly due to its devastating effects it had to the Indian people. The migrants faced extreme hunger, diseases and fatigue due to the forced march while more than 4,000 people died. John G. Burnett, a young, staunch, sagacious soldier during the Trail of Tears, helps throughout traumatic and emotional experiences at just the age of 18. It was horrendous. His actions, however, were the complete opposite. In the story "A Soldier Recalls: The Trail of Tears," the theme can be looked at as: 'Trusting, amicable, and helpful outcomes in life are not always expected, but are almost always exceeded.' due to the outstanding first person, emotive storyline that is represented by this proposed theme. John G. Burnett was not only a auxiliary adolescent man, he was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Dust Bowl The Dust Bowl was a treacherous storm, which occurred in the years of the 1930's, which affected the Midwestern people, an example the farmers, which taught us new technologies and methods of farming. John Steinbeck wrote in his novel from 1939 The Grapes of Wrath: "And then the dispossessed were drawn west– from Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas; from Nevada and Arkansas, families, tribes, dusted out, Caravans, carloads, and homeless. Totals of 20,000, 50,000, 100,000, and 200,000 people. They streamed over the mountains, hungry and restless. We got no place to live. Like ants scurrying for work, food, and most of all for land." The early thirties opened with prosperity and growth. At the time the Midwest was full of agricultural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the dirt storms were fewer in 1934, it was the year, which brought the Dust Bowl national attention. In May, a severe storm blew dirt from Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas as Far as New York City and Washington D.C. In spite of the terrific storm in May, the year 1934 was pleasant respite from the blowing dirt and tornadoes of the previous year. But nature had another trick up her sleeve, the year was extremely hot with new records being made and broken at regular intervals. Before the year had run its course, hundreds of people in Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas had died from the heat. In 1935, this storm was followed by another and another in rapid succession. A description of the storm of coming was made by a farmer:" The storm caused a tremendous amount of damage and suffering. A giant dust storm engulfs Boise City. Tremendous winds rolled up to two miles high, and stretched out a hundred miles with speeds faster than 50 miles per hour. The storms destroyed vast areas of the Great Plains farmland. The methods of fighting the dust were as many, and varied as were the means of finding a way to get something to eat and wear. Every possible crack was filled, sheets were placed over the windows and blankets were hung behind the doors. Often the places were so tightly plugged against all the dust that the houses became extremely hot and stuffy. The clouds appeared on the horizons with a thunderous roar. Turbulent dust clouds rolled in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While the tribes most integrally associated with the Southeastern U.S. in the American popular mind––the FIVE CIVILIZED TRIBES (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole)––were forcibly relocated to Indian Territory (present–day Oklahoma) from their ancestral territories in the American South, descendents of those tribes have created compelling literary works that have kept alive their tribal identities and histories by incorporating traditional themes and narrative elements. While reflecting profound awareness of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lankford and W. K. McNeil (1987). Members of the Five Civilized Tribes were at the vanguard of Native American literature during the nineteenth century. The earliest work of fiction in English by an author of native descent is generally thought to be Poor Sarah, or Religion Exemplified in the Life and Death of an Indian Woman, a 1823 pamphlet probably written by Elias Boudinot (ca. 1804–1839). A formally educated member of the Cherokee tribe who was born in Georgia, Boudinot was the editor of the bilingual newspaper The Cherokee Phoenix, the first periodical published by Native Americans. Poor Sarah was not commercial fiction––it was a propagandistic tract from a religious advocate. The first overtly commercial work of fiction written by a Native American was Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murieta, the Celebrated California Bandit (1854), a best–selling novel set in California during ... • 15. Cherokee Removal Speech The Cherokee Indians have lived on the North American continent far longer than anyone of British decent. Yet they were removed in a brutal manner from their homeland, on which they have lived for countless centuries. This journey of removal is called the Trail of Tears, which had a horrendous effect on the Cherokees. In 1791, the United States began negotiations with the Cherokee nation. However, Americans began moving onto Cherokee land and forcing them away due to want/need of land for farming and other purposes. This began a series of events that led to their removal. In 1828 the state of Georgia passed a law that stated, "as of June 1, 1830 the Cherokee Nation would be null and void, it would no longer be seen as a nation to the state of Georgia." During the nineteenth century as many as one hundred thousand Natives were forcefully moved westward. Those removed came from five different tribes. These were the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and the Seminoles who were forced to move during the decade of the Indian Removal Act of 1830.The tribe that was most affected by this was the Cherokee was a tribe that who experienced one of the most horrific removals in our nation's history. The Cherokee stated, "The Cherokee removal was named Nunna dual Tsung (Trail Where They Cried)." Although to us it is known as the Trail of Tears. • 17. The Cherokee Language Is Still Alive The question is if the Cherokee language is still alive. Is this language still spoken? Yes, it is. The Cherokee language is classified linguistically as a member of the Iroquoian family, spoken by the Cherokee people, originally inhabiting Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee. As a consequence of colonization, however, the Cherokee nation almost suffered destruction during the infamous Trail of Tears, 1838–1839, the forced removal of more than fifteen thousand people. Now, in the twenty–first century, the Cherokee make up one of the biggest Native American tribes within the U.S. with over 300,000 members. Despite their language's gravely endangered status, they are within the top ten of large groups of indigenous language speakers. However, they had to overcome many struggles. Among members of Cherokee Nation in the northeast of Oklahoma, there are only a few under the age of 40 who can be considered fluent speakers of the Cherokee language (Cherokee Nation, 2003). This survey by the Cherokee Nation was conducted of 115,026 Cherokee citizens who live within the 14 counties of the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. Thus, children are not acquiring the language at home as there is a lack of parents being native speakers. Consequently, UNESCO (2003) labels Cherokee as "definitely endangered." But how come the parents and even the parents of parents do not speak their native tongue anymore? To answer this, one must know ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ethnohistory, Vol. 31, No. 4 (Autumn, 1984): 289–300 Currently, when the losses suffered by the Cherokee Nation as a result of their forced removal are discussed, there is a focus on the loss in numbers. However, Russell Thornton's "Cherokee Population Losses During Trail of Tears: A New Perspective and a New Estimate" clearly presents a new, suitably researched perspective that argues the focus should not be only on those that died, but also on those that never lived. Thornton is a professor at UCLA in the Anthropology department. He has a number of degrees related to this study, including a Ph.D. in Sociology and a postdoctoral in Social Relations from Harvard, and specializes in Native American studies. He is clearly appropriately acquainted with this field, and his knowledge of the subject matter is evident in this piece. However, he also cites a number of papers and books by other authors, so as not to rely purely on his knowledge. Thornton asserts in his abstract that the number of Cherokees who died may have been twice the currently accepted number. However, this is not what he says the number of Cherokees lost should be based on. He argues that the losses of the Cherokee Nation should be determined based upon the number of Cherokee who would have lived, not the ones who died, a vital distinction when one considers the drastic reduction in birth rate ... • 21. Texas Biomes Our ecosystem is described depending on the location we are located in. There is different plants, animals, and environments in different environmental regions. For this paper we are focusing on the six different biomes structures we have in the state of Texas. The first biome I am going to discuss is the Central Prairies and Woodlands biome. This biome is located in the middle of biome 2 and 3 covering all of the coastal area from the Gulf of Mexico. The precipitation gradient in this area is the highest in the state of Texas. Averaging from 75–115 cm/yr. this concludes that it's a high precipitation area which means that the land in that area is green and hydrated. Since this biome extends from the south were the coast is all the way to the top of eastern Texas the temperature varies depending on the location you are looking at the further north its colder and the more south you go the hotter, humid it gets. The Impact Of The Tulsa Race Riot On The Greenwood District How did the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 impact the Greenwood District The Tulsa Race Riot impacted so many people and all it gets is a paragraph or one page in an Oklahoma history textbook. This event put Tulsa on the map and it barely gets any recognition. How are people supposed to change the world if information is constantly hidden? The riot didn't completely leave a negative impact. Don't be fooled, it was terrible and extremely destructive, but some good came out of it. For example, in my case I swell with pride when I hear about how successful and booming the black community was in Tulsa. It makes me appreciate my hometown and what it has to offer. The Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 impacted the Greenwood District by creating more roots in Tulsa, destroying the lives and homes of families, and hiding the significance of Greenwood and how prosperous it was. Where does someone get their views, traditions, and fears from if they don't identify with a culture? There is literally a culture for everything. There's a millennial culture, gaming culture, food culture, etc.–you name it! Culture itself is the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively. Whether one knows it or not, they identify with something. In the book "Tulsa's Historic Greenwood District" by Hannibal B. Johnson it states "A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots–Marcus Garvey." (Johnson Page 9). This quote ... The white south created its own social caste system with white planters as the aristocracy and the African slave at the peon (Bullard, F.B. 1989). The colonists who settled in the south were different than their counterparts in the North. The main heritage of the southern colonists was the Celtic in contrast to the English heritage of the colonists who settled in the north. The Celtic heritage these southerner colonists brought to North America from Europe had a profound effect on their folkways as well as influencing their Indian neighbors. Traditional Cherokee lands had incorporated ass of Kentucky, much of Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, North Carolina and a small part of Virginia and what is now West Virginia. The spatial proximity was one reason for the development of an identity with the Southern colonist and their institutions and traditions (Bullard, F.B. 1989). Indian agent for the United States, George Butler, commented that he felt the majority of the material progress in the Indian Territory was a result of slavery. The Delaware, the Ottawa, Shawnee, Pawnee and Potawatomi, the Sauk and Fox, Miami and Kickapoo, the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek and Seminole. In all some 90 thousand Indians were relocated. The Cherokee were among the last to go. Some reluctantly agreed to move. Others were driven from their homes at bayonet point. Almost two thousands of them died along the route they remembered as the Trail of Tears." • 31. Trail Of Tears Research Paper The Trail of Tears was the forced relocation and movement of Native Americans, including many members of the Cherokee, Muscogee (Creek), Seminole, and Choctaw nations among others in the United States, from their homelands to Indian Territory (present day Oklahoma) in the Western United States. The phrase originated from a description of the removal of the Choctaw Nation in 1831.[1] Many Native Americans suffered from exposure, disease, and starvation while on route to their destinations, and many died, including 4,000 of the 15,000 relocated Cherokee.[2] In 1831, the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee–Creek, and Seminole (sometimes collectively referred to as the Five Civilized Tribes) were living as autonomous nations in what would be called the American Deep South. The process of cultural transformation (proposed by George Washington and Henry Knox) was gaining momentum, especially among the Cherokee and Choctaw.[3] Andrew Jackson continued the removal of the Native Americans with the passage of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. In 1831 the Choctaw were the first to be removed, and they became the model for all other removals. After the Choctaw, the Seminole were removed in 1832, the Creek in 1834, then the Chickasaw in 1837, and finally the Cherokee in 1838.[4] After removal, some Native Americans remained in their ancient homelands – the Choctaw are found in Mississippi, the Seminole in Florida, the Creek in Alabama, and the Cherokee in North Carolina. Especially since the difficulty they faced trying to adapt to their new environment could have spelled doom for the 5 "Civilized" Indian Tribes. Another effect that the Indian Removal Act caused is that it changed how the Indians lived their lives. Initially, when the Indians first settled in their new lands they faced some difficulty trying to adapt. For example, when the Cherokee planted crops along Arkansas River, the crops were washed away because the river regularly flooded. For the Choctaws, they had to leave behind their homes, field, crops, and whatever livestock they possessed. For the Chickasaws, their was no land in the new Indian Territory for them to occupy, so they sold their land to the U.S. and used the money to lease land from the Choctaws. Now they can live on the annual money payments without the need to establish farms. To the Chickasaws, the removal led them to a cash economy and a political situation that lessened their dependance on the natural environment. The removal act caused the Cherokee to modify their farming methods to suit the new environment, caused the Choctaws to restock their supplies from scratch, and changed Chickasaws from a tribe that relied on agriculture to one that relied on business. Therefore, it changing how the Indians lived their lives. The last effect of the Indian Removal Act is that it had negative effects on the economy. The Forceful Effects Of The Trail Of Tears The Trail of Tears refers to the forceful relocation and eventual movement of the Native American communities from the South Eastern regions of the U.S. as a result of the enactment of the Indian Removal Act in the year 1830. In the year 1838, in line with Andrew Jackson's policy of the Indians' removal, the Cherokee community was forced to surrender its land to the east of Mississippi River and migrate to the present day Oklahoma. This journey was referred to as the "Trail of Tears" mainly due to its devastating effects it had to the Indian people. The migrants faced extreme hunger, diseases and exhaustion due to the forced march while more than 50,000 people died (Cave, 2003). The Trail of Tears resulted in a devastating effect for the Indians such as extreme hunger, diseases and exhaustion due to long walk and massive injustices and abuse of fundamental human rights. According to Perdue (2008), the Trail of Tears is regarded as one of the tragic eras in the U.S. history mainly due to the forceful relocation of the Indians. This is also considered as the beginning of the Indian extermination by the U.S. government even though they had lived in the country several centuries before the white settlers set their foot in America. Although they account for only 1 percent of the total U.S. population, they have been described as including 50 percent of the diversity that exists in this country. This diversity among Native American nations is illustrated by 250 languages and more than 500 tribes. They were one of the first Indian groups to successfully transform their aboriginal landscape into a new cultural landscape that sometimes surpassed their white frontier neighbors. They had a lots of powerful traditions focusing on the tribe first, the clan second, and the family third in terms of importance and duty. The family was the centrality of the circle and the individual was traditionally simply not allowed to upset the order of the family. • 51. Voices From The Heartland By Julie Carson Essay Voices from the Heartland is an anthology of essays that relates the stories of Oklahoma women. The authors share their experiences about their lives in Oklahoma: childhood experiences, relationships with neighbors, devastating times, life–changing events. The essays are organized under a set of themes, not limiting the contributors to a specific topic. Some of the pieces are light– hearted, such as Julie Carson's essay about her left–handedness, while others deal with the struggles the authors have gone through because of their gender. While the gender issues accentuated in the book are conveyed by Oklahoma women, they are relevant to women everywhere, in America, other industrialized nations, as well as developing countries. Women are often confined to a set of ideals and expectations because of one simple fact: they are women. Many of the women who contributed to this book have faced gender stereotyping and discrimination. Instead of allowing traditional social norms to confine them to an unwanted lifestyle, they challenged these conventional ideals, risking failure and facing condemnation from strangers as well as people close to them. People often associate feminism with negativity and pessimism. In "Feminism is a Dirty Word," Cindy Simon Rosenthal talks about how people refuse to define themselves as a "feminist." However, the movement does not advocate for women's special privileges. Feminism celebrates social equality and supports the utilization of all talents. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 53. I Want To Be A Veterinarian The career I chose to do when I get older is to be a Veterinarian. The job title is a "Vet". This career is about helping animals stay healthy. I chose this career because I've always had an interest in learning all about animals, more importantly my love for them. Also, I want to be able to help save them and find new ways to keep them healthy. My parents and some other family members have always said I have a special bond with animals. Veterinarian services are held in either a clinic, hospital, or even sometimes mobile. When working in a hospital they do more severe surgeries and/or treatments. For example, if a dog got hit by a car causing a life threatening injury more than likely it would need immediate care. When working in a clinic, they mainly do check ups and minor surgeries. For example, a dog getting spayed or neutered. "Work can be emotionally stressful." says (BLS). Veterinarians work full time "40 hours a week" says (Veterinarian), but if I was to work in a hospital, I would be on call for the most part, because "emergencies can happen at anytime." says (Mckay, Rosenburg). "May have to respond to emergencies outside of scheduled hours." says (BLS). Veterinarian clinics and hospitals are all over the country. In order to be a successful veterinarian, they must find respite. The work of a veterinarian is stressful and in order to be one they have to have a lot of dedication. I need to have a lot of fortitude. There is a lot of talking and researching new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 55. Westward Expansion The United States encouraged settlement in the West during and after the Civil War. The Homestead Act of 1862 gave families up to 160 acres of land if they agreed to live on it for five years. The completion of the railroads to the West following the Civil War opened vast areas of the region to settlement and economic development. White settlers from the East poured across the Mississippi to mine, farm, and ranch. African–American settlers also came West from the Deep South, convinced by promoters of all–black Western towns that prosperity could be found there. Chinese railroad workers further added to the diversity of the region's population. Westward expansion was especially important in the Reconstruction Era that followed the Civil War. Additionally, it contributed to the conflagration of the many issues that ignited the Civil War; as the United States gained more territory, the question of whether the new states would be free soil or slave–holding states was hotly debated. After the Civil War, the West offered inspiration to citizens hopeful of taking part in and expanding the ideals of a free labor society. As the Republican party and special interests' groups desired a more active government, those who were opposed saw the West as a place untouched by government authority. It was America in its most raw, idealist form. Settlement from the East transformed the Great Plains. The huge herds of American bison that roamed the plains were virtually wiped out, and ... • 57. Character Analysis Of August Osage County August: Osage County is a well–acted play that is generally about a family that falls apart. That is something that almost everybody has in common. This play could very well be realistic according to the situations that were being displayed, dialogue being used and the setting of the play. The play speaks about real people in everyday situations, dealing with common problems that almost everybody's family has once had to deal with such as suicide, divorce, children growing up faster than expected and much more. These types of situations go on in our everyday lives. Also, within this play it presents an everyday conversation in a succinct, direct way. The dialogue hits with full force within the context of the play and the drama plays out between the characters. Additionally, the most realistic factor in the play was the set design. The setting is in a large county home outside of Pawhuska, Oklahoma which reflects the society and culture in which people live. The set design fitting in with the play being almost a three–story home with a kitchen, dining room, Violet's room door and an attic. This everyday setting helped contribute to the power of the play, making it easier for the audience to be able to understand and relate to. Watching the August: Osage County play wasn't as interesting as the script itself, but it was many aspects in the play that kept my attention. Pertaining to acting, Violet's character was played to perfection. With her character being sixty–three ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Still, the proud wife of the Cherokee chief John Ross wrapped a woolen blanket around her shoulders and grabbed the reins." Leading the final group of Cherokee Indians from their home lands, Chief John Ross thought of an old story that was told by the chiefs before him, of a place where the earth and sky met in the west, this was the place where death awaits. He could not help but fear that this place of death was where his beloved people were being taken after years of persecution and injustice at the hands of white Americans, the proud Indian people were being forced to vacate their lands, leaving behind their homes, businesses and almost everything they owned while traveling to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many Americans saw this act as the government sanctioning of brutality and inhuman treatment of the Indian people and actively protested its passing. President Jackson thought of the Indians as children who needed his guidance and justified their removal as a way of protecting the Indians from the hatred and harassment of the white Americans and as a measure that would allow them to govern themselves in a new land. A passage from the Removal Act reads as follows, "no state could achieve proper culture, civilization, and progress, as long as Indians remained within its boundaries". This statement gives a more accurate description of how the American Congress and the President thought of all Indians in America and the Removal Act gave them the justification to further American expansion into Indian tribal lands. By the late 1830s, more than 40 treaties were signed by what was then called the Five Civilized Tribes, which consisted of the Cherokee, Choctaws, Chickasaws, Creeks, and Seminoles. Many of these tribes exchanged over 40,000 miles of land in seven states. Three–quarters of Alabama and Florida, as well as parts of Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Kentucky and North Carolina became property of the United States after they were traded for lands west of the Mississippi river, which is now Northern Oklahoma. European Exploration Of The Indian Territory European Exploration of the Indian Territory Exploration of the "New World" and the Indian Territory can be summed down to one major component, greed. Greed for power. Greed for gold. Greed for pocket lining commerce. Greed for allies. Greed for more souls to serve the Christian God. Greed for more land. Greed to protect what they have conquered. All different, but all from the same root. The Indian Territory is touched by all forms of this greed, and the approach maybe different but both brought fundamental change to the territory. • 76. Cherokee Population Losses During Trail Of Tears : A New... Currently, when the losses suffered by the Cherokee Nation as a result of their forced removal are discussed, there is a focus on the loss in numbers. However, this is not what he says the number of Cherokees . He argues that the losses of the Cherokee Nation should be determined based upon the number of Cherokee who would have lived, not the ones who died, a vital distinction when one considers the drastic reduction in birth rate immediately following removal. However, when reading this article, one must take into account the potential for bias outside of confidence in one's research. It is possible that as a Cherokee, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Human Trafficking in Oklahoma Individuals all over the world are at risk of being abducted and sold into some form of human trafficking or forced prostitution. Worldwide, human trafficking is the second largest form of organized crime. This is especially true in Oklahoma. Interstate Highways Forty, Thirty–five, and Forty–four all three run through Oklahoma, stretching from coast to coast, and from Mexico to Canada. These highways make Oklahoma an ideal crossroads for human trafficking. Because of these highways, new cases of this epidemic emerge in Oklahoma every day. For example, in June of 2015, five residents of Oklahoma City were indicted by a federal grand jury for operating an escort service, providing underage females to men in exchange for money (Justice News). Everyone is at risk of becoming a victim of human trafficking, especially females. I am particularly concerned about this ever–increasing trend for the safety of my wife and other members of my family. There are steps, however, that we as Oklahomans can take to protect ourselves, and those we care about to reduce this despicable crime. The first step we must take is to increase public awareness of the problem. Like so many other problems, people assume that such a tragedy could never happen to them. Second, Oklahoma State Legislature must increase the penalty upon conviction of human trafficking. Finally, Oklahoma Legislature must prohibit gentleman's clubs statewide.
