Intersectional Framework Of Criminology
of earlier radical feminists, more contemporary feminist criminologists have since argued for a more
intersectional approach for explaining crime and criminal justice processes (Belknap 2001; Britton
2004; Burgess–Proctor 2006; Chesney–Lind 2006; Daly 1997; Morash 2006; Potter 2006).
Intersectionality strengthens criminology in many ways. In particular, an intersectional framework is
important because it is applicable to all individuals in that it recognizes how some intersecting social
identities (e.g., white, middle–class, men) advantage certain individuals in some respects while
disadvantaging others (e.g., Black, working–class, women) (Burgess–Proctor 2006). In this way, a
more complete understanding of differences in crime patterns is ... Show more content on

Researchers such as Simpson (1989) and Britton (2004) have noted criminology's narrow use of
intersectional perspectives, focusing mostly on whites and Blacks involvement in crime. Both
scholars have advocated strongly for more research examining other racial and ethnic groups (e.g.,
Asian and Hispanic) and their relationship to crime. Simpson (1989: 619) specifically notes how
feminist criminologists have often relied on an "add race and stir" method when it came to studies
on gender and crime, assuming that all women have similar experiences. In order to more fully
integrate feminist and intersectional methods into criminological work, feminist criminologists must
recognize that the standpoint of "woman" is not monolithic, rather they should approach their
research with the understanding that differences among women exist (Burgess–Proctor 2006; Daly
and Chesney–Lind 1988; Flavin 2004; Simpson

Marie Maynard Daly
Throughout Gender and Race in the Physical Sciences, I have been struck by how rarely in STEM
we shed a light on the women of color that already exist and thrive in the sciences. Often, when we
discuss diversity in the sciences, we only discuss it in the frame of a problem. More specifically, we
tend to focus on the problem of there not being enough of these women in the field. As a result of
the lack of attention paid to pioneering women in STEM, many young people of all backgrounds are
inclined to believe that there are no women of color doing great things in the field– that there are no
role models. With this paper, and an on–campus event to be held in the spring, I hope to challenge
people's assumptions about what a scientist looks like, and inspire people through a discussion of
innovative women of color.

Marie Maynard Daly was an African–American biochemist, and the first woman of her race to
receive her doctorate in chemistry in the United States ("Marie Maynard Daly"). Marie's father
enrolled at Cornell University to study chemistry in his youth, but was unable to due to financial
constraints, and was a postal clerk throughout her youth ("Marie M. Daly"). Inspired by her father to

San Mateo County Times Analysis
The San Mateo County Times is an every day daily paper distributed by the MediaNews Group. The
paper is dispersed all through San Mateo County, Monday through Saturday. Before being sold in
1996, it had been distributed for more than 100 years as the San Mateo Times, initially distributed
by Amphlett Publishing Amphlett additionally distributed a week after week "shopping" daily paper,
The San Mateo Post, on Wednesday mornings. The Times gave broad scope of San Mateo County

Personal Narrative Analysis
I am a proud San Francisco native, whose parents come from Mexico and Guatemala. Due to
housing opportunities, my family moved from San Francisco to the Peninsula, where we eventually
rented a house in South San Francisco. South San Francisco is what I consider to be home and my
community. I grew up in a Mexican, single–parent household with my mother and brother.
Alongside my mother, I witnessed and experienced at an early age sexism, racism, and poverty. My
mother was discriminated against the majority of her life not only because she was a woman, but a
Mexican woman at that. Many times, she was unable to get a decent, living–wage job and had to
repeatedly settle for low–paying jobs as a house–cleaner, babysitter, and even selling water filters
door–to–door. I remember playing with the newest toys only when my mom ... Show more content

Actually, I had many teachers that did not believe in me. My expulsion from my first high school
told me that my school had given up on me and I on it. By the time I left high school I wanted to
prove all of the doubters wrong. I saw that my brother, who was a teen father at 17, stopped going to
school and that my mother didn't go past high school either. All of my uncles worked in trades such
as plumbers, painters, welders, and none of them went to college. I was the first person in my entire
family to go to college and graduate from a state university. I realized that in order to change the
oppressive conditions that I had experienced as a Xicano, I had to get an education. Even later into
my educational career I felt that teaching was my passion and I have been actively engaged in it
throughout my life. I decided that I wanted to be a Social Studies teacher because I believe that by
understanding history our society can learn from previous mistakes and build on past ideas for the

Hunters Point: Community Activism
By the 2000s, Bayview–Hunters Point had spoken up for itself loudly in the form of community
activism. In his journal article "No More Power Plants", Joshua Arce (2009) reports on the recent,
successful activism of Ms. Espanola Jackson, a well–known community activist who lived in
Bayview–Hunters Point since 1948. In 2006, Ms. Jackson called for the closure of the coal–burning
Hunters Point Power Plant which caused adverse health effects to district residents. Through Ms.
Jackson's consistent pressure and support from environmentalists and other activists, the plant was
eventually closed down in 2006. All along, Ms. Jackson was fighting for the rights of the low–
income communities of color who had, for a long time, been politically segregated from the rest of
the city. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Residents wanted no more of the pollution attributed to power plants in the area, and the plan to set
up the new fossil fuel plants was unwelcomed. Ms. Jackson brought to recall that, at some time in
the past, a California Independent System Operator (Cal–ISO) representative notified her that
building a new Transbay power line into the district would be sufficient to replace the Potrero Power
Plant (Arce, 2009). By April of 2008, Ms. Jackson and her cohort of community advocates found the
support of San Francisco Supervisors Michela Alioto–Pier, Ross Mirkarimi, Christ Daly, and Tom
Ammiano. Ultimately, the Supervisor's research revealed a plan approved by San Francisco in 2007
to build a Transbay power line into San Francisco from the city of Pittsburg in the East

Carl Sauer Research Paper
Carl Sauer was an American geographer from the United States who lived from 1889 to 1975. He
had a German heritage, being the son of two German immigrants. After attending college at
Wesleyan University, he attained his PhD at the University of Chicago. After establishing himself in
the world of geography, he became a geography professor at the University of Michigan and then
later on at the University of California, Berkeley. He had an extremely decorated career. He was
awarded the Honorary Fellowship Award in 1935 and was also awarded the Daly Medal in 1940,
both by the American Geographical Society. Unlike many geographers, Sauer focused in his studies
on rural areas and landscapes, rather than cities and urban landscapes. To go along with his devotion
to rural areas, he liked history and economics. He also believed that the ways of the world today and
the way humans are participating in everyday life is destroying ... Show more content on

I greatly respect Sauer's willingness to go out to prove a point. He trekked to Latin America to
gather information. Sauer stayed there for an extended period of time to fully understand the
cultures that existed there, the people, the geography, and how everything worked. Someone that
puts in that much effort deserves my admiration. Afterwards he wrote a series of papers from his
studies over there. He also studied soil and soil erosion when he worked with the National Land Use
Committee. I approve of the fact that he ventured out into a more scientific field that he was used to
in order to make a difference in nature. Lastly, at the end of his career he held a conference deemed
"Man's Role in Changing the Face of the Earth", which influenced other scientists. I appreciate ever
ounce of effort that he put in until the end of his career. Working that hard and influencing so many

The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake Of 1906
The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake
Geologic Aspect
On April 18, 1906 at 5:12 a.m. an earthquake of an estimated moment magnitude of 7.8 hit
Northern California. High intensity shaking was felt stretching from Salinas Valley to Eureka on the
North Coast. The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was one of the worst and most fatal earthquakes
in both California's and the United States' history.
California, and thus San Francisco, lies on the San Andres fault. The earthquake was caused when
this fault suddenly shifted, with the rupture spreading for a total of 476 kilometres in northward and
southward direction. "This fault is a continental transform fault, which forms part of the tectonic
boundary between the North American Plate and the Pacific Plate." (1906 Earthquake: How long
was the 1906 Crack? USGS Earthquake Hazards Program – Northern California, Accessed
September 3, 2006). 1 The distance of the fault is of about 1300 kilometres, which runs the length of
California from Cape Mendocino in the north to the Salton Sea in the south. Geologists have
estimated that the fault moved as quickly as 2.74 kilometres per second. The San Andreas Fault, the
source of this disaster, lies ten miles or deeper, at the meeting point of two tectonic plates, the
Pacific and the North American. "The right–lateral strike–slip fault is characterized by mainly lateral
motion in a dextral sense, where the western plate (Pacific plate) moves northward relative to the
eastern plate (North American

A Child Called It By David Pelzer
Summary "A Child Called "It"" is a riveting autobiography about the early childhood of abuse
survivor David Pelzer. His story takes place in the year 1973, where he lived in a California home
just outside of the San Francisco Bay area in Daly City. A time is recalled where David had the
perfect life, with camping trips, special day trips with Mother, and extravagant holiday meals.
Everything seems to be perfect, until one day things get out of control. As Pelzer's relationship with
his mother strained, it seemed the fine line between standard child discipline and abuse was being
crossed one large step at a time. Starting with closed–fisted volleys to the head, Mother's alcohol
abuse and volatile mental state only made matters worse. Throughout the years, Pelzer is given even
worse "punishment" as Mother burns his hand on the stove, forces him to eat his own vomit,
smothers his face in his baby brother's defecation, attempts to drown him, and "accidentally" stabs
him with a knife. In due time, Mother became the head of the household and manipulates each of the
family to either ignore or participate in David's attackings. His father, Stephen Joseph, was
considered his savior for a while but continued to gutlessly allow his wife and ... Show more content

SS is a disorder in which prisoners begin to bond or empathize with their captors, which in turn they
start defend and even support them. In the novel, Dave's brothers are manipulated to follow every
one of their psychotic mother's commands such as outcasting and harming their own brother. This is
possibly due to fear of the same events happening to them, or because it gives them higher standing
over their brother. The author gives evidence to this here, "As soon as we were in the car, she
ordered me to lie on the floor....where her boys took turns stomping me...(p. 142)". Years of
extensive therapy could be needed to cure this dreadful

variety of people to relate to it, since it is solely on child abuse. The poem had an end rhyme scheme
which contributed to the flow and tone of the poem by making it sound more dramatic. Many points

Donald Trump Dahli Lama Analysis

Professional Sports Teams Move Essay
Professional Sports Teams Move – Cities Fight To Keep Them
Professional sports, like most of our popular culture, can be
understood only partly by through its exiting plays and tremendous athletes. Baseball and football
most of all are not only games anymore but also hardcore businesses. As businesses, sports leagues
can be as conniving, deceitful, and manipulative as any other businesses in the world. No matter
what the circumstances are, it seems that Politicians are always some how right around the corner
from the world of sports. These Politicians look to exploit both the cultural and the economic
dimensions of the sports for their own purposes. This is what is known in the sports industry as
"playing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This type of political confrontations enables teams to control debate, leaving city officials playing
defense.      Possibly those who are most effected by the sport's
industry's willingness to abandon a community are the dedicated fans. When Al Davis moved the
Oakland Raiders to Los Angeles, he pulled away from some of sport's most loyal fans and also hurt
his football team. The NFL's Colts and Cardinals have also had failures on the field since their
moves. These three teams are proof that all the greed that was put into the moving of their franchises
hasn't brought them more success or in some cases less success.
In every move there are two sides to the politics. There are the
teams themselves and there are the cities that fight to keep them. In May 1991, Sharon Pratt Dixon,
Mayor of Washington, D.C. said, "We're going to do whatever it takes to keep the Redskins here.
Sports has become an industry, and to the extent that we can guarantee jobs for the District
residents, we will do whatever it takes, including building the stadium ourselves" (Euchner 1), this
is one view of how a city official fights for a team. The other viewpoint is from the side of the team
owner, Al Davis, managing general partner of the Raiders said, "just build it" (Euchner 1). These
viewpoints are why sports teams move and cities fight to keep

The aftermath of the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001 left our country shaken,

1. Reading is very good it can teach us new vocabulary, and how to say the words. We can even
learn new things from reading. Actually I read because I wanted to learn English. If I could not read
I cannot read I cannot read menus, books, signs, and directions, which would not need some body's
help . I can read directions by myself and I am doing it right. Reading could be a hobby for others
but I read for fun. I enjoy reading, so I don't like forcing myself to read.
2. I started reading Arabic when I was five years old, with my parents. When I was growing up my

Summary Of A Child Called It By Dave Pelzer
Author Dave Pelzer was born on December 29th 1960 and was the second of five boys. He grew up
in California where he suffered extreme abuse and mistreatment from his mother as a child for about
8 years and that's what he wrote his books about. At age 18 he joined the U.S. Air Force and served
in the Gulf War. Dave is now an american nonfiction writer for several autobiographical and self–
help books. His most famous book is A Child Called "It". A young boy named David who lived in
Daly City, California had a wonderful family who was very loving and caring up until he was four
years old. He doesn't know what happened but everything changed. His mother started beating him.
Some of the first things she did to him was punch him nonstop or throw him against the mirror in
the bathroom and bang his head so hard against it you could see imprints of his face on the glass and
blood marks and that was just the beginning. Soon she started not to let him eat, he would wake up
in the morning with no breakfast most of the time unless his brothers and some scraps for him
otherwise he would get lunch which was a peanut butter sandwich and a couple of carrots and no
dinner every day. He wore the same clothes for years straight and they haven't been washed ever so
he was humiliated and bullied all the time at school.
The beatings and cruelty from his mom only got worse. One time she was beating him and she
broke his arm really bad and brought him to the hospital and said he fell from a bunk

The blocks from Broadway to Green were too steep for electric cars to ascend and descend unaided;
the counterbalance solved the problem. Passengers would transfer from double truck electric cars at
the top of the hill to a single truck car attached to the cable by a plow. When the car reached the
bottom of the hill, it released the plow and ran on to Bay Street. The counterbalance was the only
United Railroads line which directly reached the 1915 Panama Pacific Exposition, held at the
Marina. The 19–Polk came within a block of the eastern entrance. URR had all the single truck cars
rebuilt as Pay as You Enter (PAYE) cars with multiple unit (MU) capability. The cars ran as trains
during the Exposition due to the heavy passenger loads. After the URR had become the Market
Street Railway, the line was extended to Marina Boulevard on August 29, 1925. MSRy needed to
store a weighted dummy car at the Turk and Fillmore car house so there would be a counterbalance
car for the last run of the night. A regular 22 Fillmore car towed it out to the top of the hill. The
attendant attached it to the cable, and it counterbalanced the last car of the night up the hill. The
counterbalance car stayed in the middle of the intersection of Fillmore and Green, marked with a red

A Child Called It By Dave Pelzer
The book "A Child Called It" is an emotional roller coaster type of book and stomach twisting
subjects appear throughout the chapters. It is an amazing book to read I would recommend it for
teens and young adults that have good emotional stability, because it is very intense but yet eye
opening. It shows you that there is always some else that is worse off then you are. The story takes
place in Daly City, California in 1973. Throughout story the setting switches up from the mother's
house and school. Dave Pelzer didn't really get to do anything so it was pretty plain. The protagonist
is Dave Pelzer who is a young boy that is getting abused and beaten physically and mentally by his
mother daily which is the antagonist Catherine Pelzer. He refers to as the mother or another not so
nice name. Stephen Pelzer is Dave's father who feels bad and tries to help him in the beginning, but
it comes to a point where he gives up, because he can't do anything. Throughout the story his four
brothers appear (Ron,Russell,Stan, and Stephen), teachers, principal, nurse, and his peers which
bully him. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

At 2 a.m. on October 22, 1969, someone claiming to be the Zodiac called Oakland PD demanding
that one of two prominent lawyers, F. Lee Bailey or Melvin Belli, appear on Jim Dunbar's television
talk show in the morning. Bailey was not available, but Belli appeared on the show. Dunbar
appealed to the viewers to keep the lines open, and eventually, someone claiming to be the Zodiac
called several times and said his name was Sam. Belli agreed to meet with him in Daly City, but the
suspect never showed up. Police officers who had heard the Zodiac, listened to "Sam's" voice and
agreed that he was not the Zodiac. Subsequent calls the suspect made to Belli were traced to the
Napa State Hospital, where it was learned that "Sam" was a mental patient. On November 8, 1969,
the Zodiac mailed a card with another cryptogram consisting of 340 characters. On November 9,
1969, he mailed a seven–page letter in which he claimed that two policemen stopped and actually
spoke with him three minutes after he shot Stine. Excerpts from the letter were published in the
Chronicle on November 12, including the Zodiac's claim; that same day, Don Fouke wrote a memo
explaining what had happened that night. The 340 character cipher has never been decoded. Many
possible "solutions" have been suggested, but cannot be accepted since they do away with code
making conventions. On December 20, 1969,

Essay On The Orphan Train
The Orphan Train was written by Christina Baker Kline. The story highlights orphaned children
living in New York's streets that were sent to other states via train for family placement. However,
the children during this time were more looked up as free labor. The Orphan Trains started in the
1850's. This story highlights the 1920's and how the Children's Aid Society provided aid for
orphaned children, which was ever–present as an estimated 30,000 children were homeless in New
York city in the 1850's (Childrensaidsociety.org, n.d.). Molly Ayer and Vivian Daly are the main
characters in the book. Molly, a seventeen–year–old girl, is living with foster parents after her father
died, and mother turned to drugs and deemed unfit to care for Molly. Vivian is 91 years old. As the
story progresses, Vivian tells her life story as an orphaned child in 1929 after she and her family
moved to Ellis Island, New York from Ireland. Vivian was a product from the Orphan Train era, but

The Effects of MTV on American Culture Essay
MTV, formally known as Music Television, is one of the most viewed networks on television today.
Roughly thirty–three years old, it has changed the American culture drastically in more than just one
way. Specifically targeting teens and young adults, the MTV network provides all of the most up to
date gossip on celebrities, highlights the latest fashion trends, promotes versified lifestyles, and
defines the music industry of our generation. However, this so–called "idolized network" has not
always been this way. The American culture has been affected by MTV through the creation of the
network, the transformation from simply just music television to inappropriate reality shows, and
the promotion of inappropriate content. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reality shows can be defined as a catch–all category that includes a wide range of entertainment
programs about real people. The MTV network executives quickly realized how fast the world
around them was changing; so on May 21, 1992, seven random strangers were picked to star on the
show The Real World. This show modernized MTV by connecting viewers to the world and current
culture around them. It also demonstrated that the network was not just about airing the hottest
music videos of the year. Even today, The Real World is stil the forerunner of the American reality
show genre. The reality genre has mass appeal. Because of this, MTV started to create more reality–
based shows. As more reality shows were created, the MTV network made the executive decision to
create another network channel to further the demands of viewers. So, they created M2, formally
known today as MTV2.
As MTV started adding reality shows, the air–time for music videos began to decrease
incrementally. The original purpose for M2 was to broadcast the most recent music videos of the
decade through commercial–free air time both on television and online streaming. This would
hopefully bring in more viewers because of the lack of commercial interruptions. However, because
M2 "was restricted to less widely available digital cable and satellite television, which limited its
audience reach to around 12 million homes by 2000. As time moved on, people wanted more from

California Immigration Dbq
During 1870, the Unites States went under a financial depression, which grew concerns over job
availability, working conditions, and income. As the nation was facing issues, California was having
some of their own that intersected with the nation social structures, economy and policies. One of
the major national issues in the United States and in California, in particular, was the discrimination
against minorities such as African Americans, Asians, and Mexicans. When large numbers of
immigrants migrated to California, there were laws which tried to regulate and enforce deportation.
There were also many programs which were introduced to fix the problems that the great depression
presented the nation. Most of these issues intersected with one another and influenced social

This caused California to start feeling threatened and attempted to regulate immigration in order to
discourage the Chinese from continuing to come into the state. Almost every law introduced by
California to restrict Chinese immigration went against federal laws or treaties. For example, the
Burlingame Treaty of 1868 , gave China "most favored nation status" for trading with the United
States but also established mutual respect for Chinese immigrants in the U.S and U.S. immigrants in
China. California's plan to stop immigration and favor white labor over Chinese went against this
treaty. Even though the Supreme Court did not let California pass laws which would be
discriminating, there were Anti–Chinese Union clubs who had support for some U.S. senators,
congressmen, and other politicians, which encouraged business to employ white citizens rather than
Chinese. At the same time, Anti–Chinese sentiment was also being used by politicians during
election time as a campaign strategy. California's argument against Chinese immigration was that "it
endangered white labor by degrading working labor and reducing wages"

There is minimal information regarding Daly's time in the city of New York, but it is known that he
worked at various jobs such as errand boy, hostler, and stevedore in order to save enough money to
buy passage to the city of San Francisco, California where a sister lived (Shoebotham, 1956),
(Encyclopedia of World Biography, 2004). Upon his arrival in California in 1861, Daly set about

Fortunately, his reputation as a competent miner and team leader, brought him to the attention of the

Nature's laws represent that, in the ghetto, you're not expected to make it out and make something
good of yourself. It's the "law." When Shakur says he learned to walk without feet, it symbolizes
how he is self made, and got through the struggle on his own. While he doesn't specifically mention
it, I attribute him being able to make it out of the ghetto to his education, as he was more privileged
than most of the kids in his surroundings. Growing up, Shakur attended the Baltimore School for the
Arts, where he studied poetry, music, and acting. I believe this gave him the skills to rise above his
surroundings, because his art skills gave him a way to express himself, which lead to his success.
Next, Shakur says, "Funny it seems, but by keeping its dreams, it learned to breathe fresh air"(5–6)
The dream or goal of a rose is to live, as with any plant. Also, the dreams mentioned here could
serve as a double entendre. Shakur, as the rose, could be stating that he just wants to live, as thats
the goal of many urban youth enduring the hardships of living in the projects. "Fresh air" in this
context could be a new

The Zoot Suits : A Time Of War For The United States
The 1940s was a time of war for the United States. World War II had captured the attention of the
world and the attention of many men ready to lay down their lives to fight overseas for their country.
The war in Eastern Europe was not the only fight, though. There was one back home, in the western
United States. It was the fight against racism, injustice, and prejudice. Mexican Americans were the
popular targets and victims of this fight, and their opponents were servicemen, policemen, the press,
and society itself. The cause of the conflict was the clothing the Mexican American male youth wore
and chose to identify with, zoot suits. The zoot suits were more than just a fashion statement. The

The goal of this particular fashion was to be comfortable, unique, and to be fit for dancing, which
the youth spent their free evenings doing, in particular, the jitterbug and the swing (Warren).
The zoot suits were worn not only by Mexican American youths, but also by young, African
Americans, Jewish people, and even Euro–Americans. The ones who tended to wear these suits
mostly came from poor, working class families. As a way to protest and rebel against standard
society, the suits were worn to distinguish themselves from everyone else. The rebellious youths
took pride in their clothing and made it the look of their generation (VintageDancer.com). Zoot suit
wearers were dubbed pachucos and with this look came its own language; Chuco, deriving from the
word pachuco. A mixture of Spanish, English, and old Spanish made up this language of the barrio
youths and gangs (Acuña 248).
Since the zoot suits were so different and frowned upon by middle class citizens, society took to
discriminating against pachucos, calling them criminals and gangsters. The military servicemen
especially had strife with them. A growing conflict between the servicemen and the zoot–suiters
would erupt in a historic event known as the Zoot Suit Riots. Despite the fact that many Mexican
Americans were enlisted in the military, most Euro–American servicemen viewed pachucos as draft

A Child Called It By Dave Pelzer Essay
Introduction The novel A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer is about his abusive childhood at the
hands of his own mother. Pelzer recounts his horrible childhood through his own point of view. He
goes through how his once nurturing mother changed into a vicious tormentor and how he became a
"prisoner of war" within his own home. David is exiled from his own family and dehumanized by
his mother to the point that she refers to him as "It" rather than her son. However, his astounding
will to not let his mother "beat him" gave him the strength to withstand every form of punishment
inflicted on him. (Pelzer, 1995, pp 91) His story stands as a testimony for those who suffered from
child abuse in silence. Due to the breakdown of Pelzer's family and constant abuse, the
Bronfenbrenner ecological systems that should have protected David continuously failed him. Also,
David remain in Piaget's Preoperational Stage and Kohlberg's pre–conventional stage of moral
reasoning. Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Model First of all, David's microsystem consisted
of his mother, father and five brothers. His alienation from the family lead to his hating the
relationships in his mesosystems. He explained that "Inside, [his] soul became so cold [he] hated
everything." (Pelzer, 1995, pp.133) His primary caregiver was the source of his torment and caused
a strange love–hate relationship between him and his mother. David desperately sought to earn his

Research Paper On San Andreas Fault
The San Andreas Fault is a geologic fault zone between two tectonic plates that runs from San
Francisco south to San Diego in California. It is an area of frequent earthquakes caused by the plates
sliding past each other. It is so called because it runs along the San Andreas Valley. The San Andreas
fault was brought dramatically to world attention in 1906 when sudden displacement along the fault
produced the great San Francisco earthquake and fire. This earthquake was but one of many that
have resulted throughout its life of about 15–20 million years. The entire San Andreas fault system
is more than 800 miles long and extends to depths of at least 10 miles within the Earth. The fault is a
complex zone of crushed and broken rock from a few hundred feet to a mile wide. Many smaller
faults branch from and join the San Andreas fault zone. The Pacific plate is moving northwest in
relation to the North American plate, and it is believed that the total displacement along the fault
since its formation more than 30 million years ago has been about 350 mi. Movement along the fault
causes earthquakes several thousand occur annually. The earth moves side to side from time to time
because its outer shell is broken into huge, solid plates floating on a layer of molten rock that has the
consistency of slime. These tectonic plates are constantly jostling each other, like rafts crowded into
a small pond, and its along the boundaries where they meet that most quakes are born. The two

Ballona wetlands natural habitat covered 2002 acres. This area, 800 to 1000 acres, referred to as

partners (now Playa Capital) to develop two thirds of the land with the DreamWorks' "Playa Vista

Playa Capital has agreed to provide for 297 acres of wetland and surrounding area, in exchange for
the right to develop the rest of the land. They have promised to manage and maintain these 297 acres
of land to function as a natural wetland. They have donated $12.5 million for a restoration fund they

With all the restoration and funding being put into Ballona, there are still many environmental

Daly City, California. Dave Pelzer was a boy who was abused by his own mother. He was the boy
who was called "It" in his family house. His Mother would make him eat and drink things that you
couldn't even imagine a mother would do. She treated her son as her slave. David wasn't allowed to
shower or even wear clean clothes. His mother wouldn't feed him until the third day. David would
always go to school with bruises and scratches. His father, on the other hand, would try to do
something but he failed each time he tries to convince David's mother to change her mind.
In the story, The Child Called "It" has many themes but the theme that stood throughout the story
was; no matter how bad things get and no matter how bad you just what it to stop. Always push
yourself and never let the person that hurt you bring you down. For example, in the story, david said,
that he pushed himself because he couldn't let his mother win even though he wanted to just die
someday because of all the torture and hell his mother put him through. He didn't let that stop from

Jollibee Foods Corporation International Expansion Case Analysis Jollibee built its core brand on a
selection of key criteria (core competencies) to ensure that they would succeed in a highly
competitive fast food environment. Jollibee Foods Corp (JFC) business operations catered to
Filipinos eating habits such as satisfying their palettes with spicy hamburgers. JFC store fronts were
also designed to be friendly and inviting; a comfort zone where families could gather to enjoy a
selection of foods with a very local taste. JFC also made every effort in meeting all of their
customer's requirements. These aspects were essential to JFC's overall success which also guided
and aided their expansion through out the country. The preparation ... Show more content on

He was able to immediately expand the number of outlets and deliver profits to the parent company.
Tony Kitchner expanded JFC into 8 new markets and 18 new stores between 1994 and 1996. His
strategy included a full compliment of marketing and human resource divisions. Kitchener's strategy
was to 'plant flags' as a first–mover concept and target expatriates. Kitchner tried to target
expatriates (a niche market) by establishing outlets in other countries such as the Middle East which
would allow the company to gradually enter into unfamiliar markets and give them time to develop
their appeal to a larger base. The risk of this strategy is that it would depend too much on Filipino
expatriates to patronize Jollibee's outlets. Mr. Kitchner also failed to analyze the buying decisions of
expatriates to determine how lifestyle changes in their adopted country could impact their needs and
wants. Tony Kitchner was also very ambitious. His ambitions often led to conflict and his hasty
decisions would ultimately impact the total business operations of JFC. Tony Kitchner believed it
was important to get into markets before the competition as a first–mover. This type of expansion
method is often poorly executed. As a strategy move 'plant the flag' ignored some important facts
such as the costs of establishing new businesses in a foreign country. 'Plant the Flag' also tended to
ignore such considerations as building a competitive business structure which could compete head–

Intersectional Framework Of Criminology

  • 1. Intersectional Framework Of Criminology of earlier radical feminists, more contemporary feminist criminologists have since argued for a more intersectional approach for explaining crime and criminal justice processes (Belknap 2001; Britton 2004; Burgess–Proctor 2006; Chesney–Lind 2006; Daly 1997; Morash 2006; Potter 2006). Intersectionality strengthens criminology in many ways. In particular, an intersectional framework is important because it is applicable to all individuals in that it recognizes how some intersecting social identities (e.g., white, middle–class, men) advantage certain individuals in some respects while disadvantaging others (e.g., Black, working–class, women) (Burgess–Proctor 2006). In this way, a more complete understanding of differences in crime patterns is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Researchers such as Simpson (1989) and Britton (2004) have noted criminology's narrow use of intersectional perspectives, focusing mostly on whites and Blacks involvement in crime. Both scholars have advocated strongly for more research examining other racial and ethnic groups (e.g., Asian and Hispanic) and their relationship to crime. Simpson (1989: 619) specifically notes how feminist criminologists have often relied on an "add race and stir" method when it came to studies on gender and crime, assuming that all women have similar experiences. In order to more fully integrate feminist and intersectional methods into criminological work, feminist criminologists must recognize that the standpoint of "woman" is not monolithic, rather they should approach their research with the understanding that differences among women exist (Burgess–Proctor 2006; Daly and Chesney–Lind 1988; Flavin 2004; Simpson ... • 3. Marie Maynard Daly Throughout Gender and Race in the Physical Sciences, I have been struck by how rarely in STEM we shed a light on the women of color that already exist and thrive in the sciences. Often, when we discuss diversity in the sciences, we only discuss it in the frame of a problem. More specifically, we tend to focus on the problem of there not being enough of these women in the field. As a result of the lack of attention paid to pioneering women in STEM, many young people of all backgrounds are inclined to believe that there are no women of color doing great things in the field– that there are no role models. With this paper, and an on–campus event to be held in the spring, I hope to challenge people's assumptions about what a scientist looks like, and inspire people through a discussion of innovative women of color. Marie Maynard Daly Marie Maynard Daly was an African–American biochemist, and the first woman of her race to receive her doctorate in chemistry in the United States ("Marie Maynard Daly"). Marie's father enrolled at Cornell University to study chemistry in his youth, but was unable to due to financial constraints, and was a postal clerk throughout her youth ("Marie M. Daly"). Inspired by her father to accomplish her own academic goals, she attained her doctorate in only three years at Columbia University, an impressive feat, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 7. Personal Narrative Analysis I am a proud San Francisco native, whose parents come from Mexico and Guatemala. Due to housing opportunities, my family moved from San Francisco to the Peninsula, where we eventually rented a house in South San Francisco. South San Francisco is what I consider to be home and my community. I grew up in a Mexican, single–parent household with my mother and brother. Alongside my mother, I witnessed and experienced at an early age sexism, racism, and poverty. My mother was discriminated against the majority of her life not only because she was a woman, but a Mexican woman at that. Many times, she was unable to get a decent, living–wage job and had to repeatedly settle for low–paying jobs as a house–cleaner, babysitter, and even selling water filters door–to–door. I remember playing with the newest toys only when my mom ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Actually, I had many teachers that did not believe in me. My expulsion from my first high school told me that my school had given up on me and I on it. By the time I left high school I wanted to prove all of the doubters wrong. I saw that my brother, who was a teen father at 17, stopped going to school and that my mother didn't go past high school either. All of my uncles worked in trades such as plumbers, painters, welders, and none of them went to college. I was the first person in my entire family to go to college and graduate from a state university. I realized that in order to change the oppressive conditions that I had experienced as a Xicano, I had to get an education. Even later into my educational career I felt that teaching was my passion and I have been actively engaged in it throughout my life. I decided that I wanted to be a Social Studies teacher because I believe that by understanding history our society can learn from previous mistakes and build on past ideas for the ... • 9. Hunters Point: Community Activism By the 2000s, Bayview–Hunters Point had spoken up for itself loudly in the form of community activism. In his journal article "No More Power Plants", Joshua Arce (2009) reports on the recent, successful activism of Ms. Espanola Jackson, a well–known community activist who lived in Bayview–Hunters Point since 1948. In 2006, Ms. Jackson called for the closure of the coal–burning Hunters Point Power Plant which caused adverse health effects to district residents. Through Ms. Jackson's consistent pressure and support from environmentalists and other activists, the plant was eventually closed down in 2006. All along, Ms. Jackson was fighting for the rights of the low– income communities of color who had, for a long time, been politically segregated from the rest of the city. ... Ms. Jackson brought to recall that, at some time in the past, a California Independent System Operator (Cal–ISO) representative notified her that building a new Transbay power line into the district would be sufficient to replace the Potrero Power Plant (Arce, 2009). By April of 2008, Ms. Jackson and her cohort of community advocates found the support of San Francisco Supervisors Michela Alioto–Pier, Ross Mirkarimi, Christ Daly, and Tom Ammiano. Ultimately, the Supervisor's research revealed a plan approved by San Francisco in 2007 to build a Transbay power line into San Francisco from the city of Pittsburg in the East ... After attending college at Wesleyan University, he attained his PhD at the University of Chicago. After establishing himself in the world of geography, he became a geography professor at the University of Michigan and then later on at the University of California, Berkeley. He had an extremely decorated career. He was awarded the Honorary Fellowship Award in 1935 and was also awarded the Daly Medal in 1940, both by the American Geographical Society. Unlike many geographers, Sauer focused in his studies on rural areas and landscapes, rather than cities and urban landscapes. To go along with his devotion to rural areas, he liked history and economics. He also believed that the ways of the world today and the way humans are participating in everyday life is destroying ... He also studied soil and soil erosion when he worked with the National Land Use Committee. I approve of the fact that he ventured out into a more scientific field that he was used to in order to make a difference in nature. Lastly, at the end of his career he held a conference deemed "Man's Role in Changing the Face of the Earth", which influenced other scientists. I appreciate ever ounce of effort that he put in until the end of his career. Working that hard and influencing so many people is something that one should ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake Of 1906 The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake Geologic Aspect On April 18, 1906 at 5:12 a.m. an earthquake of an estimated moment magnitude of 7.8 hit Northern California. High intensity shaking was felt stretching from Salinas Valley to Eureka on the North Coast. The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was one of the worst and most fatal earthquakes in both California's and the United States' history. California, and thus San Francisco, lies on the San Andres fault. The earthquake was caused when this fault suddenly shifted, with the rupture spreading for a total of 476 kilometres in northward and southward direction. "This fault is a continental transform fault, which forms part of the tectonic boundary between the North American Plate and the Pacific Plate." (1906 Earthquake: How long was the 1906 Crack? USGS Earthquake Hazards Program – Northern California, Accessed September 3, 2006). 1 The distance of the fault is of about 1300 kilometres, which runs the length of California from Cape Mendocino in the north to the Salton Sea in the south. Geologists have estimated that the fault moved as quickly as 2.74 kilometres per second. The San Andreas Fault, the source of this disaster, lies ten miles or deeper, at the meeting point of two tectonic plates, the Pacific and the North American. "The right–lateral strike–slip fault is characterized by mainly lateral motion in a dextral sense, where the western plate (Pacific plate) moves northward relative to the eastern plate (North American ... • 15. A Child Called It By David Pelzer Summary "A Child Called "It"" is a riveting autobiography about the early childhood of abuse survivor David Pelzer. His story takes place in the year 1973, where he lived in a California home just outside of the San Francisco Bay area in Daly City. A time is recalled where David had the perfect life, with camping trips, special day trips with Mother, and extravagant holiday meals. Everything seems to be perfect, until one day things get out of control. As Pelzer's relationship with his mother strained, it seemed the fine line between standard child discipline and abuse was being crossed one large step at a time. Starting with closed–fisted volleys to the head, Mother's alcohol abuse and volatile mental state only made matters worse. Throughout the years, Pelzer is given even worse "punishment" as Mother burns his hand on the stove, forces him to eat his own vomit, smothers his face in his baby brother's defecation, attempts to drown him, and "accidentally" stabs him with a knife. In due time, Mother became the head of the household and manipulates each of the family to either ignore or participate in David's attackings. His father, Stephen Joseph, was considered his savior for a while but continued to gutlessly allow his wife and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This type of political confrontations enables teams to control debate, leaving city officials playing defense.      Possibly those who are most effected by the sport's industry's willingness to abandon a community are the dedicated fans. When Al Davis moved the Oakland Raiders to Los Angeles, he pulled away from some of sport's most loyal fans and also hurt his football team. The NFL's Colts and Cardinals have also had failures on the field since their moves. These three teams are proof that all the greed that was put into the moving of their franchises hasn't brought them more success or in some cases less success.      In every move there are two sides to the politics. There are the teams themselves and there are the cities that fight to keep them. In May 1991, Sharon Pratt Dixon, Mayor of Washington, D.C. said, "We're going to do whatever it takes to keep the Redskins here. Sports has become an industry, and to the extent that we can guarantee jobs for the District residents, we will do whatever it takes, including building the stadium ourselves" (Euchner 1), this is one view of how a city official fights for a team. Roughly thirty–three years old, it has changed the American culture drastically in more than just one way. Specifically targeting teens and young adults, the MTV network provides all of the most up to date gossip on celebrities, highlights the latest fashion trends, promotes versified lifestyles, and defines the music industry of our generation. However, this so–called "idolized network" has not always been this way. The American culture has been affected by MTV through the creation of the network, the transformation from simply just music television to inappropriate reality shows, and the promotion of inappropriate content. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Reality shows can be defined as a catch–all category that includes a wide range of entertainment programs about real people. The MTV network executives quickly realized how fast the world around them was changing; so on May 21, 1992, seven random strangers were picked to star on the show The Real World. This show modernized MTV by connecting viewers to the world and current culture around them. It also demonstrated that the network was not just about airing the hottest music videos of the year. Even today, The Real World is stil the forerunner of the American reality show genre. The reality genre has mass appeal. Because of this, MTV started to create more reality– based shows. As more reality shows were created, the MTV network made the executive decision to create another network channel to further the demands of viewers. So, they created M2, formally known today as MTV2. As MTV started adding reality shows, the air–time for music videos began to decrease incrementally. The original purpose for M2 was to broadcast the most recent music videos of the decade through commercial–free air time both on television and online streaming. This would hopefully bring in more viewers because of the lack of commercial interruptions. However, because M2 "was restricted to less widely available digital cable and satellite television, which limited its audience reach to around 12 million homes by 2000. As the nation was facing issues, California was having some of their own that intersected with the nation social structures, economy and policies. One of the major national issues in the United States and in California, in particular, was the discrimination against minorities such as African Americans, Asians, and Mexicans. This caused California to start feeling threatened and attempted to regulate immigration in order to discourage the Chinese from continuing to come into the state. Almost every law introduced by California to restrict Chinese immigration went against federal laws or treaties. For example, the Burlingame Treaty of 1868 , gave China "most favored nation status" for trading with the United States but also established mutual respect for Chinese immigrants in the U.S and U.S. immigrants in China. California's plan to stop immigration and favor white labor over Chinese went against this treaty. Even though the Supreme Court did not let California pass laws which would be discriminating, there were Anti–Chinese Union clubs who had support for some U.S. senators, congressmen, and other politicians, which encouraged business to employ white citizens rather than Chinese. At the same time, Anti–Chinese sentiment was also being used by politicians during election time as a campaign strategy. Daly Research Paper There is minimal information regarding Daly's time in the city of New York, but it is known that he worked at various jobs such as errand boy, hostler, and stevedore in order to save enough money to buy passage to the city of San Francisco, California where a sister lived (Shoebotham, 1956), (Encyclopedia of World Biography, 2004). Upon his arrival in California in 1861, Daly set about making his fortune. Despite his lack of formal education, Daly was an intelligent, ambitious, and driven individual (Encyclopedia of World Biography, 2004). Daly remained in Virginia City until mid–summer 1869, when a devastating fire broke out in the Comstock Lode. Daly, realizing that the boom was ending, followed the hordes of miners seeking riches to various camps in Nevada, such as White Pine, Mineral Hill, and Eureka (Shoebotham, 1956). The prospects for continued success were dim and Daly was at a loss as to where to go next. Fortunately, his reputation as a competent miner and team leader, brought him to the attention of the Walker Brothers in Salt Lake City, Utah and in 1871, Daly moved to Alta to take charge of the Emma mine there (Shoebotham, 1956). Under Daly's supervision, the Emma quickly doubled production and when his instinct told him the mine was playing out, Daly suggested to the Walker Brothers that they divest themselves of their interest in the mine (Shoebotham, 1956). They followed his advice and pleased with the results, the company promoted Daly to superintendent of the Walker Properties in the Ophir and Dry Canyon districts outside of Salt Lake City, Utah (Shoebotham, 1956). Nature's laws represent that, in the ghetto, you're not expected to make it out and make something good of yourself. It's the "law." When Shakur says he learned to walk without feet, it symbolizes how he is self made, and got through the struggle on his own. While he doesn't specifically mention it, I attribute him being able to make it out of the ghetto to his education, as he was more privileged than most of the kids in his surroundings. Growing up, Shakur attended the Baltimore School for the Arts, where he studied poetry, music, and acting. I believe this gave him the skills to rise above his surroundings, because his art skills gave him a way to express himself, which lead to his success. Next, Shakur says, "Funny it seems, but by keeping its dreams, it learned to breathe fresh air"(5–6) The dream or goal of a rose is to live, as with any plant. World War II had captured the attention of the world and the attention of many men ready to lay down their lives to fight overseas for their country. The war in Eastern Europe was not the only fight, though. There was one back home, in the western United States. It was the fight against racism, injustice, and prejudice. Mexican Americans were the popular targets and victims of this fight, and their opponents were servicemen, policemen, the press, and society itself. The zoot suits were worn not only by Mexican American youths, but also by young, African Americans, Jewish people, and even Euro–Americans. The ones who tended to wear these suits mostly came from poor, working class families. As a way to protest and rebel against standard society, the suits were worn to distinguish themselves from everyone else. The rebellious youths took pride in their clothing and made it the look of their generation (VintageDancer.com). Zoot suit wearers were dubbed pachucos and with this look came its own language; Chuco, deriving from the word pachuco. A mixture of Spanish, English, and old Spanish made up this language of the barrio youths and gangs (Acuña 248). Since the zoot suits were so different and frowned upon by middle class citizens, society took to discriminating against pachucos, calling them criminals and gangsters. The military servicemen especially had strife with them. A growing conflict between the servicemen and the zoot–suiters would erupt in a historic event known as the Zoot Suit Riots. Despite the fact that many Mexican Americans were enlisted in the military, most Euro–American servicemen viewed pachucos as draft dodgers and regarded them as unpatriotic because of the unnecessary amount of ... • 64. A Child Called It By Dave Pelzer Essay Introduction The novel A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer is about his abusive childhood at the hands of his own mother. Pelzer recounts his horrible childhood through his own point of view. He goes through how his once nurturing mother changed into a vicious tormentor and how he became a "prisoner of war" within his own home. David is exiled from his own family and dehumanized by his mother to the point that she refers to him as "It" rather than her son. However, his astounding will to not let his mother "beat him" gave him the strength to withstand every form of punishment inflicted on him. (Pelzer, 1995, pp 91) His story stands as a testimony for those who suffered from child abuse in silence. Due to the breakdown of Pelzer's family and constant abuse, the Bronfenbrenner ecological systems that should have protected David continuously failed him. Also, David remain in Piaget's Preoperational Stage and Kohlberg's pre–conventional stage of moral reasoning. Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Model First of all, David's microsystem consisted of his mother, father and five brothers. His alienation from the family lead to his hating the relationships in his mesosystems. He explained that "Inside, [his] soul became so cold [he] hated everything." It is an area of frequent earthquakes caused by the plates sliding past each other. It is so called because it runs along the San Andreas Valley. The San Andreas fault was brought dramatically to world attention in 1906 when sudden displacement along the fault produced the great San Francisco earthquake and fire. This earthquake was but one of many that have resulted throughout its life of about 15–20 million years. The entire San Andreas fault system is more than 800 miles long and extends to depths of at least 10 miles within the Earth. The fault is a complex zone of crushed and broken rock from a few hundred feet to a mile wide. Many smaller faults branch from and join the San Andreas fault zone. The Pacific plate is moving northwest in relation to the North American plate, and it is believed that the total displacement along the fault since its formation more than 30 million years ago has been about 350 mi. Movement along the fault causes earthquakes several thousand occur annually. The earth moves side to side from time to time because its outer shell is broken into huge, solid plates floating on a layer of molten rock that has the consistency of slime. These tectonic plates are constantly jostling each other, like rafts crowded into a small pond, and its along the boundaries where they meet that most quakes are born. The two plates ... Kitchener's strategy was to 'plant flags' as a first–mover concept and target expatriates. Kitchner tried to target expatriates (a niche market) by establishing outlets in other countries such as the Middle East which would allow the company to gradually enter into unfamiliar markets and give them time to develop their appeal to a larger base. The risk of this strategy is that it would depend too much on Filipino expatriates to patronize Jollibee's outlets. Mr. Kitchner also failed to analyze the buying decisions of expatriates to determine how lifestyle changes in their adopted country could impact their needs and wants. Tony Kitchner was also very ambitious. His ambitions often led to conflict and his hasty decisions would ultimately impact the total business operations of JFC.
