Cord Blood
Cord blood refers to the blood that remains in the blood vessels of the placenta along with the
umbilical cord that it is attached to. Also known as placental blood or umbilical cord blood, cord blood
contains red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. It is also rich in blood forming
(hematopoietic) stem cells. These are similar to the ones found in bone marrow. Due to its similarity
with bone marrow, cord blood may be used for transplantation. Storing this blood can potentially be
used as a form of treatment for a child, should they become ill. The reason for this is because, stem
cells present in the blood can become any human cell. By storing this blood, it not only helps the
individual from whom the extra blood came from

Examples Of Knowledge In Rappaccini s Daughter
In society, especially in the time of the Enlightenment, pursuit of knowledge through the use of
rationality and reason was thought of as every man s goal. Thus, innocence had negative connotations
associated with it. When Romanticism began, thoughts associated with the Enlightenment were
thrown upside down. Nathaniel Hawthorne shows in Rappaccini s Daughter, through the characters of
Giovanni and Beatrice, how innocence is something to be valued. He shows how knowledge is a form
of corruption and how its pursuit is responsible for the ruin of their characters. Giovanni is portrayed
in the beginning of the story as completely innocent and unknowing. He knows little about this new
place where he came to study, and he longs for his hometown. In the physical sense he is a healthy and
handsome young man and is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He believes knowledge is a poison, leading to the decay and the loss on one s innocence. The pursuit
of knowledge turned Rappaccini into a monster. He was so obsessed with science that he would
sacrifice human life...or whatever else was dearest to him, for the sake of a adding so much as a grain
of mustard seed to his store of knowledge. Baglioni s pursuit of knowledge also corrupted him. He
becomes so preoccupied with bringing about Rappaccini s downfall that he himself descends to
Rappaccini s level. He orchestrates the death of Beatrice just to pull ahead in his professional rivalry.
The toxicity of the flowers in the garden is used as a metaphor for corruption or the lack of innocence.
Hawthorne demonstrates how innocence is something that once taken, cannot ever be returned. Once
Beatrice realizes the horrible truth, that she has been contaminated by the poison and transformed by
her own father into such a terrible creature, she wants her innocence back. Thus, when Beatrice drinks
the antidote made by Baglioni, it does not cure her of the poison but kills

The Lady With The Dog Analysis
The Beauty with the Beast
Anton Chekhov s The Lady with the Dog title seems to point to how the main characters first meet
each other, though the capitalization of the words Lady and Dog might point that it has another
meaning. The title then would not be about how Dmitri first knew Anna, but what their roles are at the
beginning of the story. Dmitri was a dog, a beast, a man who seduces women and when he received
what he wants leaves with just memories of the encounter and no remorse. While Anna is a lady,
mannered, pure, and wholesome. The story follows the two and how their love for one another
changes them, from a dog to a man.
Dmitri, before he loved Anna, was a dog, one who looked down on women and only thought of the
pleasures and benefits he could receive from them. Stuck in an unhappy marriage with his wife to the
point that he, did not like to be at home (Chekhov, 62). Dmitri, though enjoys the company of women,
he acknowledged that he could not get on for two days together without the lower race (Chekhov, 62),
the lower race referencing women. Consequently, this disgust of his own wife and desire for women
causes Dmitri to cheat, He had begun being unfaithful to her long ago had been unfaithful to her often
(Chekhov, 62). Dmitri liked to keep all his affairs simple and amusing, whenever one would begin to
be too much work and/or unbearable, he would drop it and proceed to the next one. Though Dmitri is
quite an observant person he would focus on the

Rupert Brooke and Wilfred Owen
Rupert Brooke and Wilfred Owen
Since the threat of war in some part of the world everyday and because of the colossal impact that it
has had on our lives, it doesn t seem surprising that it is a popular theme of poetry. Sonnets are an
extremely passionate form of poetry, used to show how the poet feels in their heart; both Rupert
Brooke and Wilfred Owen create this passion in excellent, but very different ways. Anthem for
Doomed
Youth by Wilfred Owen is a Shakespearean sonnet reflecting on the callous life at war. Owen wrote
this poem during his four months at
Craiglockhart, a war hospital, whilst recovering from trench fever.
Faced with many fatally injured men, this must have inspired him to write a great deal. Unlike ...

Made up of an octave and a sestet, the first stanza follows the
Shakespearean sonnet form, whereas the second follows the Petrarchan sonnet pattern. Together the
two stanzas invite the reader to visualize the prominence of the deceased soldier. Combining England
s traditions, legacy and his patriotism, Brooke talks of the place where he will spend his after life
which is a cross between England and heaven. There is not as much of a connection between the poet
and reader in Brooke s sonnet as he is addressing you If I should die, think only this of me . I prefer
the way in which Owen gets the reader interested by getting them to question their thoughts.
In parts of the poem I feel that Brooke is just an arrogant man;
That there s some corner of a foreign field
That is forever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
With this, Brooke makes it apparent that he believes that wherever he is buried will become purer as
his English body shall turn to dust and become a part of it. I find this overly intense and I am almost
disgusted, as I find it hard to believe that someone could feel so superior by merely being English.
Although Owen s poem is also very intense I find it easier to understand his thought process and can
read it in agreement. Whilst saying this, in Brooke s case, it may just be ignorance and he could quite
easily be excused due to the fact

My Life Of Sports
Sports are a substainsal part of my life. As a person, I am very competitive and I love watching sports
almost as much as I love playing them. My two main athletic passions are softball and baton twirling.
I ve been playing softball since I was four, and nothing has been able to tear me from the field ever
since. I love the fast pace of the game, every at bat is exhilarating, and I always am hoping the ball
will come to me on defense. I have met many of my best friends through softball, and I love the
opportunity to be able to work and play a team sport with amazing people and friends. Along with
softball, I also enjoy basketball and football. My basketball career was brief (due to my shortness), but
I follow the NBA and I m a Warriors and Celtics fan. I have always kind of wished I could play
football, but I enjoy watching the Packers and Broncos, and follow college football go Hawks! My life
is immesly influenced by sports, and I can credit sports for an abundance of memories and years of
fun.
My other, more uncommon sport I compete in is baton twirling. Twirling is a rare and complex sport
that not many compete in, and for that reason, I am known to some as that twirler girl . Baton is like
smashing different types of dance, gymnastics, and aerobics into one, then adding one or a few, silver
sticks. It s an incredibly physically demanding activity that requires a great deal of practice,
perseverance, and patience. I started twirling at age three, so this is is

Affirmative Improvement Essay
Ways to Improve
The current state of Affirmative action has its advantages and disadvantages and by no means is it
perfect. Addressing the disadvantages is a good place to start on the path for improvement. It is ironic
that its detractors now pitch Affirmative action as reverse discrimination when the original program
was designed to overcome discrimination. In order to overcome this disadvantage we cannot simply
eliminate the program because it truly does facilitate the integration and tolerance of women and
minorities in the United States.
Another disadvantage of affirmative action is that the rules in place lower the standards and make
people less accountable. Examples of this have been seen universities and colleges across the country
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The policies of Affirmative action were not designed to reduce racism; they were created to implement
policies for equality. Many racial prejudices have been fuel by past events in this country history that
cannot be undone. The American Physiological institute found that despite their increase for racial
equality white Americans are reluctant to implement reform policies because of negative stereotypes
of African Americans as lazy, welfare dependent or somehow culturally more prone to violence.
(Bobo, Lawrence D. and Fox, Cybelle 2003) To reduce racial prejudices and stereotypes, the country
will need to implement reform that addresses the inequalities and stereotyping that exist today. There
is also the topic of gender prejudices that have been by media. In an article by the Chronicle gave light
on gender stereotypes such as Women are inherently more caring and more relational than men and
Boys have a mathematics gene, or at least a biological tendency to excel in math, that girls do not
possess. (BARNETT and RIVERS, 2004)The article gave valid research that theses stereotypes are
more of a product of social engineering rather than fact based. IT is imperative that affirmative action
review and critique stereotypes in order to absolve them

Preserving The Good Within Ourselves
Preserving the Good within Ourselves: Fiction Superhero shows and movies have become incredibly
popular over the last decade. Whether you re an adult or a child, the variety of superhero shows and
movies appeal to all ages and have become an obsessive source of entertainment. With new
technology, superheroes and villains that were once pages in a comic book have come to life in ways
the older generation of fans would never have imagined. Ever since Christopher Reeve played
Superman in 1978, three sequels and many more remakes followed suit (Yueh). Ever since the original
X men film was released in 2000; half a dozen new movies have been released every year since which
totals to about 61 movies (Yueh). The Avengers along with four other films grossed more than 1
billion dollars in the box office, making movie history. What makes superheroes, as well as villains so
fascinating? For decades, society had found comfort, hope, and inspiration in superheroes. The idea of
having a superhero is fascinating because one person possess inherently good qualities to carry the
burden of others. A superhero is kind and fearless while continuously putting others before
themselves. They usually possess amazing abilities or powers, allowing them to handle a situation in a
way a normal person couldn t. They can be compared to Greek Gods, but because they also have flaws
we are able to relate and connect with them. Superheroes have the capacity to single handily make the

Feminist Criticism In Mr. Tang Girls
Shirley Lim Geok Lin s Mr. Tang Girls is a short story that illustrates the life of the four Malaccan
girls in the second family of Mr. Tang or better known as Ah Kong in the story. This story, set off back
in the 20th century in Malacca, mainly revolves around how Ah Kong tried to control his family
especially the eldest girl, Kim Li and how she finally set herself free by killing him. The theme
victimization and resistance of women against the patriarchy of family by using the feminist literary
tools of male domination, exploitation of women as well as resistance.

whole day and have tea with Ah Kong in order to please him where he wanted them to constituted his
sense of home yet their voices were to be heard like cheerful music in the background, but never

Fertebrate Innate Immune System
Immune system
During evolution process, most organisms have established a sophisticated immune system to protect
and clear the invading pathogens. The immune system of vertebrates has been divided into innate and
adaptive immune system, although, emerging evidences have shown the interplay between the two.
The innate immune system comprises physical barriers, cellular components and humoral responses
that can be activated in the early phase of infection upon interaction with foreign antigens as
immediate response against them and further helps to shape adaptive immune response on the basis of
the nature of stimulant by activating the components of the adaptive immunity. The vertebrate innate
immune system relies on pattern recognition receptors

Why Volkswagen Will Race Ahead Of Auto Peers
Volkswagen (VLKAY), world s third largest automaker behind Toyota (TM) and General Motors
(GM), has been an exceptional performer in the automotive industry, gaining 158% over the last five
years. Although the U.S. is one of the Volkswagens smaller markets, it is a top seller in the Europe and
China. As the company aspires to become the global industry leader by 2018, here are a few reasons to
back up its ambitious claim.
European auto industry poised for a rebound
Europe s beleaguered auto industry endured a six year slump, with auto sales falling to the lowest
level in nearly two decades, as a sluggish economic recovery put a brake of spending. However, going
by the recent data trend, the industry is headed for a revival this year. European auto sale increased
7.6% in February, marking the sixth straight month of sales increase, as steady economic recovery in
Italy, Portugal and Spain spurred demand for new cars, according to the Association of European
Carmakers (ACEA). The improving consumer confidence, amid a recovering economy, is likely to
drive a 2% to 3% upside in 2014.
Volkswagen, Europe s biggest automaker, is best positioned to benefit from the auto industry rebound.
As a matter of fact, it has significantly helped the region s improved sales in recent months, posting
rises of 8.9% and 7.2%, respectively, in January and February this year. If demand holds up,
Volkswagen can considerably outperform the regional market this year. Furthermore, global auto sales

Australian Kooala s Natural Habitats
As an Australian native marsupial, the koala has been listed as endangered across majority of its
natural habitats. At one point, its population had grown to almost 10 million, but has dropped to
100,000 or less still in the wild because of human activity. Many have taken action to restore the
population of the koala. The koala s background proves that their population decline is effected mainly
on humans. Numerous people refer to the koala as a koala bear, but in reality it is a marsupial, similar
to a wombat. It is found in the Australian states of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South
Australia. This nocturnal animal lives mostly in eucalyptus forests where its main food source is the
leaves of the tree. Without disturbance, the koala can live up to 15 years. While it may have no natural
predators in the wild, it does have exposed skin on its face, hands, and feet which can make it
vulnerable to fires and further threaten the population. Although other factors like fires harm koalas,
humans have the most impact on the koala. The koala may not be ... Show more content on

Kurt was an artistic child since the beginning, he would constantly draw and sing and play on a small
drum set. At age eight Kurt became more hateful toward all people because he felt that he didn t fit in
anywhere, and that feeling only amplified when his parents divorced. I remember feeling ashamed, for
some reason, ashamed of my parents Kurt explained in a 1993 Guitar World interview. Divorce wasn t
a common thing at the time, people just didn t split so Kurt felt that he couldn t even face some of his
friends at school anymore. He so desperately wanted the typical family life so he resented his parents
for quite a few years after that. He quickly became depressed and withdrew himself from anything
family oriented. He caused trouble at home which resulted in being kicked out by his mother. This
caused more issues with his home situation leading him to be shifted among aunts, uncles, and even
friends because after a few weeks in each place everyone wanted him to leave.
Things didn t get any easier for Kurt as the years went on. His interest in people and outlook on life
kept rapidly declining. His social influences and interests migrating towards the older kids that were
known as the scum or low lives of the school. At twelve kurt was getting wasted at his first rock

Analysis Of The En Plein Air Paintings By William Cullen...
During the 19th century, the en plein air paintings were introduced to many artists. Since that, natural
light became particular important to the Hudson River School. Also, art and literature were constantly
entwined, such as American Romanticism. Significant individuals became familiar with one another s
work, resulting in inspiration that led to creative works that pay homage to another artists work. For
instance, Asher Brown Durand s Landscape Scene From Thanatopsis was inspired by the romantic
poet William Cullen Bryant, whose work was influenced by the multifaceted cultural creations. Both
Bryant and Durand investigated the themes of men, nature, individualism, and the inner and after
lives. Through detailing natural elements that emphasized the life cycle, Durand created literary art by
paying tributed to Bryant s Thanatopsis . Asher Brown Durand was an American painter, one of the
founders of the Hudson River School of landscape paintings. He was born in 1796, New Jersey, USA.
He died in 1886. He used to be an engraver. He illustrated gift books and annuals, and engraved a
popular series of 72 portraits of antemproary Americans. In 1840, he visited Europe to study the works
of old masters. After he returned, he went to Adirondack Mountain with Thomas Cole to do the en

Rabies Is A Real Threat And Should Not Be Taken Lightly
Are you worried about catching a disease from your pet or another animal? If not, then you should be!
Rabies is a very real threat and should not be taken lightly. It is a zoonotic disease that can affect any
warm blooded creature, even the cute little bunnies. It is a highly infectious disease. Rabies is spread
through saliva and nervous system (CNS) tissue and is caused by the rhabdovirus. A simple lick from
your favorite pet or even a bite from any infected animal can give you this disease. Rabies is most
commonly seen in unvaccinated strays and wild life carrying the disease, such as foxes, raccoons,
skunks, and bats. Knowing all of the clinical signs, how the disease progresses, and your treatment
and prevention options is very important when you could be exposed to this deadly disease. Rabies is
almost always fatal and noticing the clinical signs of an infected animal just might save your life and
help you avoid exposure. Rabies infected patients may exhibit a rapid progression of neurological
signs such as cerebral dysfunction, anxiety, confusion, agitation, and abnormal behavior. Delirium,
hallucination and insomnia may also be noticed with this disease. Infected individuals may also
exhibit an itching sensation at the site of the bite wound, a fever, headache, weakness or discomfort,
and excessive salivation (foaming at the mouth) ( Clinical Signs of Rabies in Animals, 2011). If you

Ray Bradbury Sameness
All Summer in a Day written by Ray Bradbury is a science fiction short story. Margot is from Earth,
living on Venus. Margot and her classmates are excited to see the sun. All of Margot s classmates but
they lock her in a closet and go enjoy the sun while she islocked in the closet. All Summer in a Day
teaches readers that sameness is bad because there is no change and no experimenting with the world.
One way that sameness has a negative impact on the people is the weather. For example, It had been
raining for seven years; thousands upon thousands of days compounded and filled from one end to the
other with rain (Bradbury). On Venus they are not accustomed to change they only experience rain.
They have not seen the sun for seven years. They only experience rain everyday the same thing one
after another. This is a good example of sameness because they only experience rain. It is important to

This presents how separate Margot is and how her classmates recognize that and decide to keep away.
This is bad because we are all different and our differences need to be recognized. I chose this quote
because it empathises how much the children recognize Margot s difference and think it is a bad thing.
Finally, a fourth example of sameness and separation is, They surged about her, caught her up and
bore her, protesting, and then pleading, and then crying, back into a tunnel, a room, a closet, where
they slammed and locker the door (Bradbury). When Margot s classmates lock her in a closet it is
located in the middle of the story and at the climax. It is important to notice that Margot will not see
the sun because she is locked in a closet. It is the make or break part in the story because all Margot
wants is to see the

Not because we re going to be another statistic about the mass shooting in America, but because we

Besides, another part that I like about the speech is when Gonzalez is not only furious at the shooter
but also all the people that live with him, see him express his homicidal tendencies but just ignore, or
who see him buy the guns, go outside, head to school and do nothing about this. The way she blames
all those people is seen as a rationalization. She gives out a clear explanation before justifying with
logical and plausible reasons.
She let people see how strongly and passionately she wants to end gun violence throughout the
speech. The crowd at the rally also totally supports all intense arguments that she made. They clap
their hands, repeat her words and shout out loud their agreement.
To summarize, after her viral rally, there is almost nothing that can catch the nation from paying
attention to the Parkland tragedy at this moment. Some celebrities and media outlets have amplified
her speech and that helps to raise the chances of prevention. She is determined never to lose
momentum in her fight for a stand against gun violence and stricter gun

no desire to be. In the first stanza, the author describes a delightful scene with the sun bright on the
upland slopes (Dunbar 2). This might have been the author describing his life when he graduated high
school, thinking he had so many options with life. After reading into the second stanza the mood
changes, almost becoming gloomy. The author feels caged like this bird as he is trying to beat his
wing/ Till its blood is red on the cruel bars ; ( Dunbar 8 9). Dunbar was held back ... Show more

It has become a religious norm for hundreds of years to treat women like they are less than human and
inferior to men. In the article Women on the Front Lines of Faith vs. State by the Monitor s Editorial
Board it goes on to describe all the tortures that women have had to endure. Hilary Clinton tries to
define the line between faith based bias and human rights (Monitor s Editorial Board 1). In the holy
land of Israel signs were put up at religious synagogues telling women they could not even walk past
the holy sanctuaries with out prosecution. Government workers quickly removed the signs and
denounced the discrimination (Monitor s Editorial Board 2). Israeli woman are known for not even
being able to show their heads in public, the men of this country do not see the women as being equal
in rights and privileges. In Israel it is just normal to treat women differently especially in public, like
they are strictly sexual beings (Monitor s Editorial Board 3). Women are treated as less than humans in
most of these countries. This article was very similar in comparison to this poem, sympathy by Paul
Laurence Dunbar. Dunbar feels the discrimination because of his skin color, and was denied the

Vito Corleone In Francis Ford Coppola s The Godfather
That s my family Kay, that s not me (The Godfather). Francis Ford Coppola s The Godfather
establishes the lives of Vito Corleone and the Corleone crime family of New York. Vito Corleone is a
godlike figure who commands respect because he obeys the codes of his Old World predecessors. He s
a man of honor and a man who is both feared and loved, rather than feared itself. Sicilian men, in Vito
s eyes, are true Italians. Their businesses are separated from their personal lives, and nothing is more
important than the well being and safety of the family. While the film focuses on Vito Corleone as the

He was able to separate himself from the world of organized crime, especially after he turns all his
responsibilities over to Michael. Michael, however, becomes more and more ruthless as he rises to
power. He chooses business over his personal relationships. Vito claimed that family was the most
important thing a man can have in his life, yet Michael doesn t share this same virtue. He s at the peak
of his life where he is now in full control over the family business. Unlike his father who was both
feared and loved, Michael is feared. He s no longer the same man introduced in the beginning of the
film, but instead, a ruthless cold hearted killer who will stop at nothing to climb to the top of the
hierarchy. He s had a taste of power and now, he s ready for more. Francis Coppola s The Godfather is
a film about the importance of family in the midst of mafia involvement, it s about the relationship
between father and son, power, and what it takes to achieve it. However, what the films reveals is that
everyone s view of power is different and that it is something that tears individuals apart no matter the

Reflection Of Sigmund Freud s Theory Of Art
Sigmund Freud established and originated the psychoanalysis with the emphasis on helping the
patients of neurotic illnesses. Freud formulated his method through Joseph Breuer s hypnotic method
that is the free association. He revolutionalized the ideas of how the human mind works; He
challenged the long standing identification of the self with the conscious thinking subject. Freud
established the theory of the unconscious. This becomes a controversial one that is comparable to the
Copernican revolution that the sun is the center of the universe and Darwin s theory of evolution that
man is a descent of the apes; in this analogy, Freud, argued that a large part of what makes up the

The first part is an exposition of Sigmund Freud s aesthetic theory. This discussed the beginning of

that affirmatively can evoke an effect or a feeling but it does not have the sense of apprehension in it.
It is also in this part that Freud s formulation that a poet is regulated by both the fantasy and reality as
he proposes the first poet and the second poet . In the second part of the part of the chapter, discuss the
three fold personality structure of personality, the id, the ego, and the super ego. The id is the seat of
the unconscious, it comprises of the desires and the wishes that are seeking for fulfillment, and it
primarily conforms to the pleasure principle. The ego is the rational conscious part. It acts as the
intermediary between the super ego and the id as well as strive for the fulfillment of the demands of
the id, the super ego, and the reality. Unlike the id the ego is regulated by the reality principle. And the
super ego is developed with the help of the external influences that which is taken from the other
people external authority. It mainly concerns on the operation of man in the society. And on the latter
part, it states that an art is produced with the influence of the three fold personality structure. The id is
the source of inspiration, the ego gives an art a unity and the super ego makes an art to be a form of
sublimation. The last part of the second chapter is the two mental functioning. The primary process
conforms to the id while, the secondary process serves as a guide to the ego. These two are related to
the pleasure and reality principle, respectively. Any work of art is working towards the reconciliation

Brand recognition is a powerful asset for these firms. To maintain recognition and manage cultural
shifts, franchises in the full service sector often make subtle changes to their logos over time. These
slight changes go unnoticed by the seasoned consumers, but appeal to emerging consumer segments
and modern perceptions (see Appendix A). Northlich s makeover initiatives for Frisch s are valuable,

changes did not occur over an extended period of time and are immediately visible for all consumers.
These changes have faced opposition from older consumers as a result. Frisch s traditional marketing

The Abols Of Symbolism In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The...
In life, people see different meanings to the same events based on their perspective. In the same way,
authors place symbols in a book to intensify the characters emotions and further the plot. Nathaniel
Hawthorne uses symbols in The Scarlet Letter such as the color red, sunshine, and various characters,
such as Chillingworth, Hester, and Pearl. Red is a color that can represent passion, sensitivity, or
power. Throughout the novel, the color red represents all of these descriptions. Hawthorne creates red
objects such as the rosebush, the letter A, and a meteor. The rosebush, as described by the author,
...symbolizes some sweet moral blossom, that may be found along the track, or relieve the darkening
close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow, (Hawthorne 34). Being at the door of a dark prison, the
rosebush stands in contrast to the prison, a place of suffering and shame, and instead gives joy to all
who pass by. This symbol foreshadows Hester s future lifestyle and helps develop her character
throughout the story.
A similar theme of red is shown in the scarlet letter. The Puritans shame Hester by forcing her to wear
it, symbolizing her sin; however, she overcomes this shame by helping the needy. The author
describes the scarlet letter, in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic
flourishes of gold thread, appeared the letter A, (Hawthorne 37). The letter is significant because while
the Puritans wanted her to feel ashamed by the letter,

Two Versions of To Build a Fire by Jack London
The story To Build a Fire written by Jack London has two nearly identical versions published in 1902
and 1908 respectively. The latter is better known and more thought provoking because of the
protagonist s death. To begin with, the journey takes place on a cold winter day in Klondike, consists
of a man and his dog. The man is ignorant of the extreme coldness and feels confident about travelling
alone at fifty degrees below zero. However, he breaks through a thin skin of ice unexpectedly and
wets himself halfway to the knees. In order to dry his feet, the man builds a fire, only to have it
extinguished by a pile of snow unloaded from a tree. He tries to set up another fire, yet all attempts
has failed. The man panics and strives to unfreeze his body by running. Not surprisingly, his efforts
are useless, and the man dies of hypothermia at last. The author effectively supports the central
conflict of man versus nature and gives hints about the man s death as resolution by using appropriate
title, descriptive setting, and a large amount of foreshadowing.
First of all, the title is well chosen, for it gives the readers an overview of the story and supports the
plot effectively. Detailed descriptions of how to set up a fire and the man s continuous attempts to do
so reflect that the story evolves around the phrase to build a fire . Throughout his journey, if the man
succeeds in making a fire, it brings warmth, hope, and life; on the other hand, if he fails, it means
coldness

Artificial Intelligence At a time when computer technology is advancing at a rapid pace and when
software developers are convincingly hawking their products as having artificial intelligence, the
inevitable question has begun to take on a certain urgency: Can a computer think? Really think? In

Furthermore, his lack of understanding goes to show, he argues, that computers do not understand

Searle himself does not understand Chinese in the thought experiment, it is perfectly correct to say
that Searle plus look up table understand Chinese. In other words, the entire computer would

An Analysis Of Henrik Ibsen s A Doll s House
A Symbol of the Times
Henrik Ibsen masterfully uses symbolism to add depth and meaning to his play A Doll s House. The
story is about a housewife named Nora who gets into trouble when she forges her father s name to
borrow money for her husband s sake. Many objects take on new meaning in this story, from the
Christmas tree in the opening scene to the slammed door at the end. Ibsen uses Nora as symbol
representing how many women in that time period were treated like objects. The literal meaning of
this engaging, but the use of symbolism is what makes it a truly powerful story.
The Helmers live in nineteenth century Norway. The opening scene is set during the Christmas season,
in the apartment of a somewhat average family where Nora and Torvald are married with three kids.
The story revolves around Nora, and how she forged her dying father s signature to acquire a loan. In
Nora s eyes she had to go behind Torvald s back, so that she could take him to Italy to recover from
his illness. Nora must acquire the money to pay off the loan without her husband knowing. The reason
being that Torvald is very tight with money, and would not spend so much on himself. The man Nora
borrowed from is employed by Torvald, and will soon be fired. Krogstad is his name, and he tells
Nora that if she can convince her husband to let him keep his job, he will not tell Torvald of her
actions. Nora can not acquire the money quick enough, so Krogstad sends a letter to Torvald revealing
Nora s actions.

Essay about Character, Values and Morals in Huckleberry Finn
Character, Values and Morals in Huckleberry Finn
Mark Twain s Huckleberry Finn is perhaps one of the most controversial novels the North American
Continent has ever produced. Since its publication more than a hundred years ago controversy has
surrounded the book. The most basic debate surrounding Twain s masterpiece is whether the book s
language and the character of Jim are presented in a racist manner. Many have called for the book to
be banned from our nation s schools and libraries. Mark Twain s novel is about a young boy who was
raised in the south before slavery was abolished, a place where racism and bigotry were the fabric of

hate for blacks and pretty much for all of society. Huck, as a product of his society, speaks the
language of his society. By choosing as his point of view a young boy from the slave south, Twain is
able to present and challenge the values and assumptions of this time. Among the assumptions and
values of the time that the reader encounters in the book are the strict definitions pertaining to Huck s
world and the people who inhabit it:
The world of Huckleberry Finn presents a curious mixture of Calvinist principles and aristocratic
ideals. . . . We meet most of the fundamentalist Christian sects from their Sunday schools to their
Methodist and Presbyterian churches; from Revivalist camp meetings to lay preachers (like brother
Phelps) and ministers (like the Wilks brothers). We meet representatives of all three classes from
upper and lower orders of the ruling Whites to Blacks. For that is the first division: Whites (who are
people ) and Blacks (just niggers ). People , in their turn are further divided into two castes: the quality
and plain folks.
(Beaver 64 5)
In order for Huck to challenge any of the values and assumptions of the time he must first be
acquainted with them. And he is not only intimately acquainted with the values of his society but he
holds many of its beliefs himself. But Huck longs for freedom away

Online Writing vs Formal English
We have come full circle in forms of communication. From cave man grunts, body and hand gestures,
and pictographic wall paintings, to cubicle man lols (laugh out loud), ttyls (talk to you later), and
smiley face emoticons, we are regressing to an earlier form of interactions. The expressive and
communicative richness of writing is slowly becoming the archeological relics of an electronic
modern society. I am no stranger to this failing. I started high school with a loose grasp of the tools of
writing; I left high school with a, slightly, better grasp of those tools. Now, as my high school years

cyber vernacular is ignored in favor of my own gibberish. Mostly I write to a specific audience not an
unknown reader, and take liberties with my words.
My major failing when I try to assimilate my techno text with a scholastic essay is, I am not used to
communicating in a formal manner to a potentially critical and voluntary reader. With the ambiguous,
sometimes incoherent cyber darts of communiqué; my message is set adrift with little care about how

they are often ambiguous. I write easily discarded words. I cannot use this form for my English class.
In the essays required for school, I have to write carefully and in an engaging way. One pitfall I find

Accessibility About 80% of Canadian claims that they have a family doctor and 64% of the population

USA, healthcare is currently not accessible to all Americans but only to certain societal groups that are
less fortunate. It is estimated that by 2019, the uninsured population in the States may increase to 65.7
million people, or 23.2% of the population. The U.S. population has a constant stable growing rate,
which means the U.S. healthcare systems will have to provide for an even larger population than it
already has. The U.S. population is expected to increase by 325 million by 2020; the population will
increase by about 20%. All this to say that it is crucial that America tries to make healthcare more
accessible and available to the entire population not solely to the indigents and seniors for the better of
the society. If this situation is not resolved, it will only cause more deficiency in the American
healthcare system and making the situation worse than it already is.

The Issue Of Disciplinary Infractions For High School...
On Monday, February 29, 2016, I interviewed Dr. K. Wallace, District Administrator for Jefferson
County Public School District. The interview was on the topic of ethical fairness in education. Dr.
Wallace discussed the issue of disciplinary infractions for high school students. He pointed out that
bullying and acts of violence are becoming a major problem for administrators. According to Dr.
Wallace, administrators must learn how to strike a balance in respecting the rights of children and
eradicating acts of bullying and violence.
According to Dr. Wallace, two students at Jefferson County High School were scheduled a due process
hearing for bullying. He revealed that the two students had made threats on social media and brought
weapons to school. However, the two students alleged that they were the ones being bullied and only
brought the weapons to protect themselves from a gang of girls and their parents. The two young
ladies are academic scholars and have no prior disciplinary history.
Dr. Wallace maintained that there is a need to adopt common sense policies that adequately address
bullying and consequences for it. He contended that all stakeholders must be held accountable in order
to eliminate this issue. Dr. Wallace suggested that school district personnel receive professional
development on properly handling acts of violence and bullying. He also noted that school leaders
must provide their staff with the tools and resources to identify and address bullying. He

Persuasive Essay On Honey Bees
For every one out of three bites we take, it is due to the work of the honey bees. Many of the foods
such as fruits require pollination from a pollinator to be produced. As well as fruits, there are also
vegetables, nuts, seeds, fiber, and hay (Hoyt, 10). All essential to the world and all must be pollinated.
The little insects play a huge role in maintaining natural plant communities and ensuring production of
seeds in most flowering plants. In the United Kingdom, honey bees create an additional crop value of
165 million every year, with no additional cost to farmers (Gross, 2). With the hundreds of species of
bees, they are the world s leading pollinators. It is only now that we see that we have taken pollination
for granted. Praising pollination as one of nature s free services. It is not one of the factors that are
considered when looking at the agricultural possibilities of a given farm area, such as water, fertilizers,
or pesticides (Hoyt, 13). All around the world, there have been years recorded where the honey bees
just suddenly disappear. It is due to all of the agricultural and climate change. Honey bees should not
travel too far from their hive, but recently it is not possible for them to remain close and collect nectar
as well because of the decline of plants they can pollinate (Hoyt, 13). Their voyaging distances have
increased and not every honey bee makes it back to the hive due to the long distances they now have
to travel (Hoyt, 15). To decrease the distance they travel, humans must plant more gardens for the
honey bees to pollinate instead of allowing them to venture out blindly in search of the nectar they
need (Hoyt, 16). If Colony Collapse Disorder were to prevail over the honey bees, it would spell
disaster for the honey business as well as our entire food population. One in ten hives suffers from
Colony Collapse Disorder (Calabro, 8). The good news is that Colony Collapse Disorder has been in
decline over recent years. Some researchers even say that the endangerment of honey bees is a false
case. There are statistics that show that many of the foods that honey bees are responsible for
pollinating such as apples and almonds have actually increased over the years (Calabro, 8). If the food

Setting goals with a team while keeping in mind what your business stands for and the community you
are trying to target. Setting S.M.A.R.T goals is a great way to keep companies on track. One way of
writing effective goals for yourself, your job or your company is to use the S.M.A.R.T. guidelines
(Williams, 2010). S.M.A.R.T. goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. Like any
plan in business come challenges from all who have their hands in the sand. There needs to be strong
commitment to attain the success. With these goals comes effective action plans, tracking progress,

Transformation Of Escherichia Bacteria And Dna
Transformation of Escherichia coli in different concentrations of Plasmid DNA
Introduction
This report discusses an experiment which students have to transform and plate competent Escherichia
coli in different concentrations of plasmid DNA. This experiment uses four concentrations of plasmid
DNA to perform four transformations. These concentrations are namely, 5 µl of distilled water, which
acts as the control in this experiment; 2.5 µl of undiluted plasmid DNA; 1.0µl of undiluted plasmid
DNA; and lastly, 1.0µl of plasmid DNA diluted 1 in 10. Transformation is an important aspect in
genetic engineering as it allows for a particular DNA to enter into another cell. The aim of this
experiment is to be able to perform a cell transformation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then, we placed 100 µl of the E. coli cells into four Eppendorf tubes each and labelled them A, B, C
and D. After filling them up, we placed them into an ice box. After this, we needed to perform the
transformation process by mixing the E. coli cells with different concentrations of plasmid DNA. In
test tube A, we added 5 µl of distilled water to the E. coli cells. In test tube B, we added 2.5 µl of
undiluted plasmid DNA to the E. coli cells. In test tube C, we added 1.0 µl of undiluted plasmid DNA
to the E. coli cells. Lastly, in test tube D, we added 1.0 µl of plasmid DNA diluted 1 in 10 to the E.
coli cells. Then, we used a P100 pipette and mixed all the liquids in all the Eppendorf tubes by
pipetting the solution up and down. Then, we left the Eppendorf tubes along with its contents in the
ice box for twenty minutes. After twenty minutes, we labelled the base of the four agar plates to match
with the appropriate plasmid DNA concentration about to be plated. We also wrote our initials, the
date, and the table number on the base of the agar plate. We then gently lifted up the cover of the agar
plate with just enough space to allow us to plate each tube of cells onto four different agar plates one
agar plate to one plasmid DNA concentration. We used a spreader to spread the cells evenly over the
surface of the agar, being careful not let the spreader touch

Rubella and Neonatal Effects Essay example
Rubella and Neonatal Effects Rubella is an essentially harmless disease that resembles measles,
however, it is highly teratogenic to a developing fetus. If a pregnant woman contracts rubella, the fetus
is at risk to develop Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) which can result in tissue and organ
damage. Proper nursing interventions and teaching should be done to prevent the spread of rubella and
to lower the rates of CRS.
A History and Epidemiology for Rubella
Until the 18th century, rubella was often confused with measles and scarlet fever. In 1952 and 1958,
two German scientist were able to isolate the rubella virus and it was given the name German Measles
until 1866 when a Scottish physician gave it the name Rubella (Duszack, ... Show more content on

After sixteen weeks of gestation, the risk of fetal death, malformation, and miscarriage is much less.
Since the effects of CRS vary with gestational age at the time of infection, accurate gestational dating
should be established, as it is critical to counseling (Dontigny, Arsenault, Martel, 2008, p. 155).
Consequences of Maternal Infection for Unborn Fetus
The rubella Virus is very teratogenic, and should a maternal infection occur, the developing fetus
might develop congenital rubella syndrome. As said earlier, amount of injury to the developing fetus is
highly dependent on what stage of development the fetus is in. The rubella virus targets all organs and
tissues of the body and has a wide range of effects.
Tests to determine Maternal and Fetal Infection
Tests can be done to determine maternal or fetal infection of the rubella virus. According to Dontigny
et al. (2008) if maternal infection is suspected, a serology test using enzyme linked immunoassay
(ELISA) is used to test for rubella specific IgM and IgG antibodies in maternal blood. A rise in rubella
IgG antibodies, a positive serologic test for IgM antobodies and a positive rubella culture are essential
to maternal diagnosis of infection (Dontigny et al., 2008). If maternal infection has been determined,
test to determine if the virus has spread to the fetus should be performed

Walter Benjamin and the past disassociating with present
In Walter Benjamin s Berlin Childhood Around 1900, he applies a variety of concepts with respect to
time: past, present, and future. The concepts are highlighted in his vignettes: Victory Column , The
Telephone , and Butterfly Hunt . Benjamin attempts to imbue his writing with a different structure of
time from what was conventional. He perceives history as a section of moments, and each moment is
an integral whole in its own right, making it equal to the present (Knights). Benjamin also notes that
the ignoring of the past and the focus on the progression of the future causes harmful effects to nature
(Knights). The concept of technological progress appears to give grounds for the domination and
abuse of nature (Patke). Subsequently, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though Benjamin attributes a sense of delight to his image of the Victory Column , there is also a
contrasting affect of death that permeates through the vignette. There is a portico around the Victory
Column, but it is when Benjamin asserts that this portico was itself the inferno a sense of death
becomes apparent. It is evident that Benjamin wants to spotlight the darkness around the column. It
seems that Benjamin is using this past image to illustrate a sense of responsibility for the innocently
suffered of past generations. Benjamin is placing a redemptive quality to the death of the past
individuals. There is a sense of redemption embedded in his past. Benjamin wants it visible that the
Victory is surrounded by death, which is analogous of his present situation. Sigmund Freud agrees
with Benjamin s reluctance on war as he states war Broke out, and it brought disillusion (Freud 172)
and that A future war, because of such great advances in the means of destruction, would mean the
extermination of one or perhaps both adversaries. (Freud 231). If Germany in Benjamin s present is to
obtain a Victory in its oppressive endeavor, it is through mass death, which is proven through the past.
Thus, the Victory Column depicts Benjamin s past delights before his innocence was corrupted by the
future, and an example of how studying the past and its follies can save immense death.
Progression through technological advancement is a process

Media Ethical Issues
What are ethical issues in relation to the workplace and social media? The workplace is known to have
ethical issues, some that many people may not even notice to be an issue. Ethical issues are those that
may be faced when the question of What is right and what is wrong? comes about. In most cases,
people tend to use their grown knowledge, meaning the knowledge that have grown to have from
experiences and from the way they were raised, when in actuality a person should like logically and be
subjective when it comes to making ethical decisions. When it comes to social media, this can be
tricky, because everyone feels entitled to their own opinions, free of speech, and this they are.
However, there are boundaries, as with most things in life. These boundaries are set in place to protect
the workplaces risk of liability, harassment, bullying, and discrimination policies. How can social
media encourage false advertisement in a workplace? Social media is one of the vastest forms of
promotion (meaning advertising), and sometimes people in the workplace use that to their advantage.
In some workplaces people work to promote certain items or services, and sometimes the employees
may go to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. to help promote their service or item. That is
not the issues, the issue comes when company s pay people to say positive things about the company
by leaving fake reviews. This is unethical due to the fact that this is a form of false advertisement,

Also known as placental blood or umbilical cord blood, cord blood contains red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. It is also rich in blood forming (hematopoietic) stem cells. These are similar to the ones found in bone marrow. Due to its similarity with bone marrow, cord blood may be used for transplantation. Storing this blood can potentially be used as a form of treatment for a child, should they become ill. The reason for this is because, stem cells present in the blood can become any human cell. • 3. Examples Of Knowledge In Rappaccini s Daughter In society, especially in the time of the Enlightenment, pursuit of knowledge through the use of rationality and reason was thought of as every man s goal. Thus, innocence had negative connotations associated with it. When Romanticism began, thoughts associated with the Enlightenment were thrown upside down. Nathaniel Hawthorne shows in Rappaccini s Daughter, through the characters of Giovanni and Beatrice, how innocence is something to be valued. He shows how knowledge is a form of corruption and how its pursuit is responsible for the ruin of their characters. Giovanni is portrayed in the beginning of the story as completely innocent and unknowing. He knows little about this new place where he came to study, and he longs for his hometown. In the physical sense he is a healthy and handsome young man and is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He believes knowledge is a poison, leading to the decay and the loss on one s innocence. The pursuit of knowledge turned Rappaccini into a monster. He was so obsessed with science that he would sacrifice human life...or whatever else was dearest to him, for the sake of a adding so much as a grain of mustard seed to his store of knowledge. Baglioni s pursuit of knowledge also corrupted him. He becomes so preoccupied with bringing about Rappaccini s downfall that he himself descends to Rappaccini s level. He orchestrates the death of Beatrice just to pull ahead in his professional rivalry. The toxicity of the flowers in the garden is used as a metaphor for corruption or the lack of innocence. Hawthorne demonstrates how innocence is something that once taken, cannot ever be returned. Once Beatrice realizes the horrible truth, that she has been contaminated by the poison and transformed by her own father into such a terrible creature, she wants her innocence back. The Lady With The Dog Analysis The Beauty with the Beast Anton Chekhov s The Lady with the Dog title seems to point to how the main characters first meet each other, though the capitalization of the words Lady and Dog might point that it has another meaning. The title then would not be about how Dmitri first knew Anna, but what their roles are at the beginning of the story. Dmitri was a dog, a beast, a man who seduces women and when he received what he wants leaves with just memories of the encounter and no remorse. While Anna is a lady, mannered, pure, and wholesome. The story follows the two and how their love for one another changes them, from a dog to a man. Dmitri, before he loved Anna, was a dog, one who looked down on women and only thought of the pleasures and benefits he could receive from them. Stuck in an unhappy marriage with his wife to the point that he, did not like to be at home (Chekhov, 62). Dmitri, though enjoys the company of women, he acknowledged that he could not get on for two days together without the lower race (Chekhov, 62), the lower race referencing women. Consequently, this disgust of his own wife and desire for women causes Dmitri to cheat, He had begun being unfaithful to her long ago had been unfaithful to her often (Chekhov, 62). Dmitri liked to keep all his affairs simple and amusing, whenever one would begin to be too much work and/or unbearable, he would drop it and proceed to the next one. • 5. Rupert Brooke and Wilfred Owen Rupert Brooke and Wilfred Owen Since the threat of war in some part of the world everyday and because of the colossal impact that it has had on our lives, it doesn t seem surprising that it is a popular theme of poetry. Sonnets are an extremely passionate form of poetry, used to show how the poet feels in their heart; both Rupert Brooke and Wilfred Owen create this passion in excellent, but very different ways. Anthem for Doomed Youth by Wilfred Owen is a Shakespearean sonnet reflecting on the callous life at war. Owen wrote this poem during his four months at Craiglockhart, a war hospital, whilst recovering from trench fever. Faced with many fatally injured men, this must have inspired him to write a great deal. Unlike ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Made up of an octave and a sestet, the first stanza follows the Shakespearean sonnet form, whereas the second follows the Petrarchan sonnet pattern. Together the two stanzas invite the reader to visualize the prominence of the deceased soldier. Combining England s traditions, legacy and his patriotism, Brooke talks of the place where he will spend his after life which is a cross between England and heaven. There is not as much of a connection between the poet and reader in Brooke s sonnet as he is addressing you If I should die, think only this of me . I prefer the way in which Owen gets the reader interested by getting them to question their thoughts. In parts of the poem I feel that Brooke is just an arrogant man; That there s some corner of a foreign field That is forever England. There shall be In that rich earth a richer dust concealed; With this, Brooke makes it apparent that he believes that wherever he is buried will become purer as his English body shall turn to dust and become a part of it. I find this overly intense and I am almost disgusted, as I find it hard to believe that someone could feel so superior by merely being English. Although Owen s poem is also very intense I find it easier to understand his thought process and can read it in agreement. Whilst saying this, in Brooke s case, it may just be ignorance and he could quite easily be excused due to the fact ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Affirmative Improvement Essay Ways to Improve The current state of Affirmative action has its advantages and disadvantages and by no means is it perfect. Addressing the disadvantages is a good place to start on the path for improvement. It is ironic that its detractors now pitch Affirmative action as reverse discrimination when the original program was designed to overcome discrimination. In order to overcome this disadvantage we cannot simply eliminate the program because it truly does facilitate the integration and tolerance of women and minorities in the United States. Another disadvantage of affirmative action is that the rules in place lower the standards and make people less accountable. European auto industry poised for a rebound Europe s beleaguered auto industry endured a six year slump, with auto sales falling to the lowest level in nearly two decades, as a sluggish economic recovery put a brake of spending. However, going by the recent data trend, the industry is headed for a revival this year. The ego is the rational conscious part. It acts as the intermediary between the super ego and the id as well as strive for the fulfillment of the demands of the id, the super ego, and the reality. • 31. The Abols Of Symbolism In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The... In life, people see different meanings to the same events based on their perspective. In the same way, authors place symbols in a book to intensify the characters emotions and further the plot. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses symbols in The Scarlet Letter such as the color red, sunshine, and various characters, such as Chillingworth, Hester, and Pearl. Red is a color that can represent passion, sensitivity, or power. Throughout the novel, the color red represents all of these descriptions. Hawthorne creates red objects such as the rosebush, the letter A, and a meteor. The rosebush, as described by the author, ...symbolizes some sweet moral blossom, that may be found along the track, or relieve the darkening close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow, (Hawthorne 34). Being at the door of a dark prison, the rosebush stands in contrast to the prison, a place of suffering and shame, and instead gives joy to all who pass by. This symbol foreshadows Hester s future lifestyle and helps develop her character throughout the story. A similar theme of red is shown in the scarlet letter. The Puritans shame Hester by forcing her to wear it, symbolizing her sin; however, she overcomes this shame by helping the needy. The author describes the scarlet letter, in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread, appeared the letter A, (Hawthorne 37). • 32. Two Versions of To Build a Fire by Jack London The story To Build a Fire written by Jack London has two nearly identical versions published in 1902 and 1908 respectively. The latter is better known and more thought provoking because of the protagonist s death. To begin with, the journey takes place on a cold winter day in Klondike, consists of a man and his dog. The man is ignorant of the extreme coldness and feels confident about travelling alone at fifty degrees below zero. However, he breaks through a thin skin of ice unexpectedly and wets himself halfway to the knees. In order to dry his feet, the man builds a fire, only to have it extinguished by a pile of snow unloaded from a tree. He tries to set up another fire, yet all attempts has failed. The man panics and strives to unfreeze his body by running. Not surprisingly, his efforts are useless, and the man dies of hypothermia at last. The author effectively supports the central conflict of man versus nature and gives hints about the man s death as resolution by using appropriate title, descriptive setting, and a large amount of foreshadowing. First of all, the title is well chosen, for it gives the readers an overview of the story and supports the plot effectively. Detailed descriptions of how to set up a fire and the man s continuous attempts to do so reflect that the story evolves around the phrase to build a fire . Throughout his journey, if the man succeeds in making a fire, it brings warmth, hope, and life; on the other hand, if he fails, it means coldness ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. An Analysis Of Henrik Ibsen s A Doll s House A Symbol of the Times Henrik Ibsen masterfully uses symbolism to add depth and meaning to his play A Doll s House. The story is about a housewife named Nora who gets into trouble when she forges her father s name to borrow money for her husband s sake. Many objects take on new meaning in this story, from the Christmas tree in the opening scene to the slammed door at the end. Ibsen uses Nora as symbol representing how many women in that time period were treated like objects. The literal meaning of this engaging, but the use of symbolism is what makes it a truly powerful story. The Helmers live in nineteenth century Norway. The opening scene is set during the Christmas season, in the apartment of a somewhat average family where Nora and Torvald are married with three kids. The story revolves around Nora, and how she forged her dying father s signature to acquire a loan. In Nora s eyes she had to go behind Torvald s back, so that she could take him to Italy to recover from his illness. Nora must acquire the money to pay off the loan without her husband knowing. In another word, the healthcare in Canada is considered to be highly accessible. Unfortunately, the system does have its flaws in situations such as the aboriginals, the people with disabilities, and for the populations that lives outside the urban areas have less accessible healthcare providers. For many instances, the dweller of the rural and reserves areas would have to travel for hours to find a clinic and for others it is simply not available. Compare to Canada, in the USA, healthcare is currently not accessible to all Americans but only to certain societal groups that are less fortunate. It is estimated that by 2019, the uninsured population in the States may increase to 65.7 million people, or 23.2% of the population. The U.S. population has a constant stable growing rate, which means the U.S. healthcare systems will have to provide for an even larger population than it already has. The U.S. population is expected to increase by 325 million by 2020; the population will increase by about 20%. All this to say that it is crucial that America tries to make healthcare more accessible and available to the entire population not solely to the indigents and seniors for the better of the society. • 42. Persuasive Essay On Honey Bees For every one out of three bites we take, it is due to the work of the honey bees. Many of the foods such as fruits require pollination from a pollinator to be produced. As well as fruits, there are also vegetables, nuts, seeds, fiber, and hay (Hoyt, 10). All essential to the world and all must be pollinated. The little insects play a huge role in maintaining natural plant communities and ensuring production of seeds in most flowering plants. In the United Kingdom, honey bees create an additional crop value of 165 million every year, with no additional cost to farmers (Gross, 2). With the hundreds of species of bees, they are the world s leading pollinators. It is only now that we see that we have taken pollination for granted. Praising pollination as one of nature s free services. It is not one of the factors that are considered when looking at the agricultural possibilities of a given farm area, such as water, fertilizers, or pesticides (Hoyt, 13). All around the world, there have been years recorded where the honey bees just suddenly disappear. It is due to all of the agricultural and climate change. Honey bees should not travel too far from their hive, but recently it is not possible for them to remain close and collect nectar as well because of the decline of plants they can pollinate (Hoyt, 13). Their voyaging distances have increased and not every honey bee makes it back to the hive due to the long distances they now have to travel (Hoyt, 15). To decrease the distance they travel, humans must plant more gardens for the honey bees to pollinate instead of allowing them to venture out blindly in search of the nectar they need (Hoyt, 16). If Colony Collapse Disorder were to prevail over the honey bees, it would spell disaster for the honey business as well as our entire food population. One in ten hives suffers from Colony Collapse Disorder (Calabro, 8). The good news is that Colony Collapse Disorder has been in decline over recent years. • 45. Transformation Of Escherichia Bacteria And Dna Transformation of Escherichia coli in different concentrations of Plasmid DNA Introduction This report discusses an experiment which students have to transform and plate competent Escherichia coli in different concentrations of plasmid DNA. This experiment uses four concentrations of plasmid DNA to perform four transformations. These concentrations are namely, 5 µl of distilled water, which acts as the control in this experiment; 2.5 µl of undiluted plasmid DNA; 1.0µl of undiluted plasmid DNA; and lastly, 1.0µl of plasmid DNA diluted 1 in 10. Transformation is an important aspect in genetic engineering as it allows for a particular DNA to enter into another cell. The aim of this experiment is to be able to perform a cell transformation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then, we placed 100 µl of the E. coli cells into four Eppendorf tubes each and labelled them A, B, C and D. After filling them up, we placed them into an ice box. After this, we needed to perform the transformation process by mixing the E. coli cells with different concentrations of plasmid DNA. In test tube A, we added 5 µl of distilled water to the E. coli cells. In test tube B, we added 2.5 µl of undiluted plasmid DNA to the E. coli cells. In test tube C, we added 1.0 µl of undiluted plasmid DNA to the E. coli cells. Lastly, in test tube D, we added 1.0 µl of plasmid DNA diluted 1 in 10 to the E. coli cells. Then, we used a P100 pipette and mixed all the liquids in all the Eppendorf tubes by pipetting the solution up and down. Then, we left the Eppendorf tubes along with its contents in the ice box for twenty minutes. After twenty minutes, we labelled the base of the four agar plates to match with the appropriate plasmid DNA concentration about to be plated. We also wrote our initials, the date, and the table number on the base of the agar plate. We then gently lifted up the cover of the agar plate with just enough space to allow us to plate each tube of cells onto four different agar plates one agar plate to one plasmid DNA concentration. We used a spreader to spread the cells evenly over the surface of the agar, being careful not let the spreader touch ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Rubella and Neonatal Effects Essay example Rubella and Neonatal Effects Rubella is an essentially harmless disease that resembles measles, however, it is highly teratogenic to a developing fetus. If a pregnant woman contracts rubella, the fetus is at risk to develop Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) which can result in tissue and organ damage. Proper nursing interventions and teaching should be done to prevent the spread of rubella and to lower the rates of CRS. A History and Epidemiology for Rubella Until the 18th century, rubella was often confused with measles and scarlet fever. In 1952 and 1958, two German scientist were able to isolate the rubella virus and it was given the name German Measles until 1866 when a Scottish physician gave it the name Rubella (Duszack, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After sixteen weeks of gestation, the risk of fetal death, malformation, and miscarriage is much less. Since the effects of CRS vary with gestational age at the time of infection, accurate gestational dating should be established, as it is critical to counseling (Dontigny, Arsenault, Martel, 2008, p. 155). Consequences of Maternal Infection for Unborn Fetus The rubella Virus is very teratogenic, and should a maternal infection occur, the developing fetus might develop congenital rubella syndrome. As said earlier, amount of injury to the developing fetus is highly dependent on what stage of development the fetus is in. The rubella virus targets all organs and tissues of the body and has a wide range of effects. Tests to determine Maternal and Fetal Infection Tests can be done to determine maternal or fetal infection of the rubella virus. According to Dontigny et al. (2008) if maternal infection is suspected, a serology test using enzyme linked immunoassay (ELISA) is used to test for rubella specific IgM and IgG antibodies in maternal blood. A rise in rubella IgG antibodies, a positive serologic test for IgM antobodies and a positive rubella culture are essential to maternal diagnosis of infection (Dontigny et al., 2008). If maternal infection has been determined, test to determine if the virus has spread to the fetus should be performed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Walter Benjamin and the past disassociating with present In Walter Benjamin s Berlin Childhood Around 1900, he applies a variety of concepts with respect to time: past, present, and future. The concepts are highlighted in his vignettes: Victory Column , The Telephone , and Butterfly Hunt . Benjamin attempts to imbue his writing with a different structure of time from what was conventional. He perceives history as a section of moments, and each moment is an integral whole in its own right, making it equal to the present (Knights). Benjamin also notes that the ignoring of the past and the focus on the progression of the future causes harmful effects to nature (Knights). The concept of technological progress appears to give grounds for the domination and abuse of nature (Patke). Subsequently, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though Benjamin attributes a sense of delight to his image of the Victory Column , there is also a contrasting affect of death that permeates through the vignette. There is a portico around the Victory Column, but it is when Benjamin asserts that this portico was itself the inferno a sense of death becomes apparent. It is evident that Benjamin wants to spotlight the darkness around the column. It seems that Benjamin is using this past image to illustrate a sense of responsibility for the innocently suffered of past generations. Benjamin is placing a redemptive quality to the death of the past individuals. There is a sense of redemption embedded in his past. Benjamin wants it visible that the Victory is surrounded by death, which is analogous of his present situation. Sigmund Freud agrees with Benjamin s reluctance on war as he states war Broke out, and it brought disillusion (Freud 172) and that A future war, because of such great advances in the means of destruction, would mean the extermination of one or perhaps both adversaries. (Freud 231). If Germany in Benjamin s present is to obtain a Victory in its oppressive endeavor, it is through mass death, which is proven through the past. Thus, the Victory Column depicts Benjamin s past delights before his innocence was corrupted by the future, and an example of how studying the past and its follies can save immense death. Progression through technological advancement is a process ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Media Ethical Issues What are ethical issues in relation to the workplace and social media? The workplace is known to have ethical issues, some that many people may not even notice to be an issue. Ethical issues are those that may be faced when the question of What is right and what is wrong? comes about. In most cases, people tend to use their grown knowledge, meaning the knowledge that have grown to have from experiences and from the way they were raised, when in actuality a person should like logically and be subjective when it comes to making ethical decisions. When it comes to social media, this can be tricky, because everyone feels entitled to their own opinions, free of speech, and this they are. However, there are boundaries, as with most things in life. These boundaries are set in place to protect the workplaces risk of liability, harassment, bullying, and discrimination policies. How can social media encourage false advertisement in a workplace? Social media is one of the vastest forms of promotion (meaning advertising), and sometimes people in the workplace use that to their advantage. In some workplaces people work to promote certain items or services, and sometimes the employees may go to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. to help promote their service or item. That is not the issues, the issue comes when company s pay people to say positive things about the company by leaving fake reviews.
