Anesthesia Paper
The Study of Anesthesia: History, Chemistry, and Activity By Cordell Jones The Description of
Anesthesia, It s Effects, its Careers, and it s Future By Cordell Jones Introduction In 1591, a young
mother was dragged from her home and taken away. Her mercy pleas were ignored, and she was
thrown intro a pit and buried alive. What was this mother s crime? She had given birth to twin sons,
and during her labor she had asked for some pain relief. The Church regarded the pain of childbirth as
a punishment justly inflicted by God. The ultimate intent of her persecution was to discourage other
women from making the same decision. You can tell today s society is less diluted by medicine and
anesthesia. Now if ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The anesthetic was developed by scientists at Baxter Laboratories. It was used in clinical use in Japan
in 1990. Third, sodium pentothal was founded in the early 1930s by Ernest H. Volwiler and Donalee
L. Tabern, working for Abbot Laboratories. It was first used in humans on March 8, 1934, by Dr.
Ralph M. Walters in a study of its properties. Three months later, Dr. John S. Lundy started a clinical
trial of thiopental at the mayo Clinic at request of Abbott. (Wikipedia, 2010) Fourth, halothane was
first synthesized by C. W. Suckling of Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in 1951 and was first used
by M. Johnstone in Manchester in 1956. Halothane became popular as a nonflammable general
anesthetic replacing other volatile anesthetics such as diethyl ether and cyclopropane. (Wikipedia,
2010) Halothane is no longer used in the U.S. because of its problems, such as it took it a long time to
put a patient asleep and then longer to wake the patient back up. Plus if the patient is put under for a
longer amount of time during a operation more gas will build up in the fats and then later go up to the
brain. (Kervin, 2010) Fifth, lidocaine, the first amino amide type local anesthetic of its time, was first
synthesized under the name Xylocaine by Swedish chemist Niles Löfgren in 1943. Bengt Lundqvist
performed the first injection experiment on himself. It was first marketed in 1949. (Wikipedia, 2010)

Animal Testing And Its Effects On Human Health
Millions of animals suffer and die unnecessarily each year as they become subjects for medical testing
and other horrendous experiments. Although some people believe such activities are necessary to
progress in medical research, in reality it does very little to improve human health and development.
For decades, drug and chemical safety assessments have been based on laboratory experimentations
involving rabbits, dogs, rodents, and other animals. Consequently, nine out of ten drugs proven safe
and effective in animals fail when given to humans. Animal testing is unreliable and unnecessary and
there are more effective research methods out there that do not come at the expense of innocent
animals lives. Everyone acknowledges that animals and humans are similar in more ways than one.
Animal testing has proven to be a valuable asset in scientific research, cosmetic manufacturing, and
drug development ( About Us ). Animal research, testing, and experimentation has assisted other
countries, for example, in the United Kingdom over 400,000 people with Type 1 diabetes now have
insulin to rely on. Animal research and testing has played a part in almost every medical breakthrough
of the last century. It has saved hundreds of millions of lives worldwide... Former UK Home Office
Minister Joan Ryan. According to the House of Lords Select Committee experimentations on animals
have contributed greatly to scientific advances . While it all may be true, we fail to

Roe V. Wade Summary
while at the same time not talk over the reader s head or bore them to death with legal writing. Mr.
Forsythe has collected original research that has exposed new pieces of evidences about important
problems dealing with the legal reasoning choices and the pieces of evidences mentioned in the people
s majority opinions.
There are several things to learn about this particular aspect of the legal system, however, the one that
stuck out the most is the understanding of words when it comes to certain laws. The meaning of words
in a written law and how people interpret or understand them is extremely important, especially when
dealing with such a controversial case. For example, Roe has two vital rulings that are based on the
Fourteenth Amendment, which says that no state shall deprive any person of liberty (pg. 7). The
Justices, who decided this case, interpreted the terms liberty and unborn in certain ways that favored
their ruling in Roe v. Wade. According to Forsythe, the Justices first interpreted liberty to include a
right to privacy and held that abortion is part of that right to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Wade the most intriguing thing about this book is that the Justices pushed aside any procedural
questions concerning this case and decided the abortion law with no factual records. The book
describes how in the lower court hearings of this case both sides did not present any actual evidence,
there were no trials that went on, and the judges didn t even bother to look at the evidence. The same
thing goes for the higher up courts. The federal court hearings went along without looking into any
medical concerns or any other indications as well. They also did not involve any witnesses that could
have been subjected for cross examination. To make matters seem worse the federal statute of 1970
made it so that no intermediate appellate court could conduct a screening for any possible

Discuss The Arguments In Favour Of British Imperialism
Dirks argues we should look past colonial justifications of higher principles such as Liberty,
Democracy or a civilising impulse and recognise them as excuses for domination and exploitation .
However, the confident and aggrandising attitude is crucial to understanding why the British presumed
that their white settler colonies would desire a closer union, and why others were excluded. J. S. Mill
s, who studied the empire as a scholar and as an official of the East India Company thought that
different types of possessions [are] to be governed in different ways depending on the stages of
civilisation they had reached and because of this civilising aim any failure was blamed on the
precolonial past . As Sullivan has noted, like James ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the difficulties of a creating an agreed constitutional formula exposed that a coherent
ideology was out of grasp. Political structures and Britain s role within them were of particular
concern as for Froude one free people cannot govern another free people . An anonymous article in
1873 argued for a really Imperial Parliament in place of the English, Welsh and Scotch, and Irish one
that wrongly goes by that name . There was particular concern over Britain s future role; whether it
would be first amongst equals, maintain her status, or be equal with perhaps power centred not in
Westminster, but in a federal head. Dilke argued that the issue of central government as the choice of
capital will, here as in Canada, be a matter of peculiar difficulty . Also, ambiguous vocabulary with
federations , confederations , and commonwealths whilst in one way was a strength in attracting many
to the cause, meant disagreement was inevitable. Bell compares Seeley with anti Imperialist and
opponent Goldwin Smith to show that they shared a broad consensus about the world and Britain s
place within it, as Smith, nicknamed Little Englander advocated unity, but contrasting Seeley, believed
it would come from residue loyalty to England. Furthermore, Dilke, who had already raised concern

Analysis Of The Book Bastard Out Of Carolina By...
The book, Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison, is about relationships between family
members, the social class, white trash , and abuse. In the book, there is a young girl by the name of
Ruth Anne Boatwright, but goes by the name of Bone. Bone s mother had her at the young age of 17
years old. Her whole life, Bone, didn t have a steady father figure. Anney Boatwright, Bone s mother,
married a man and out of that relationship, her sister was born. Soon after Anney married him, he died
in a tragic car accident. The next man she married was Glen Waddell. This is when the problems
came. Glen Waddell had some issues of his own and throughout the book, he took it out on Bone. At
this point, Bone and Daddy Glen s relationship throughout the book took a turn and their relationship
consisted of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. In the book, Daddy Glen would physically abuse
Bone for nothing. Bone never did anything wrong to him to deserve what he did to her. Bone and
Daddy Glen never got along from the beginning. Daddy Glen s reputation for a hot temper made
people very careful how they talked to him (Bastard Out of Carolina 55). Glen had a temper and when
he got mad, he would take it out on Bone. Daddy Glen looked at me standing there. I know how much
your mamma loves you, he said, putting his hand on my arm, squeezing tight. When he let me go,
there was a bruise, and Mama saw it right away. Glen, you don t know your own strength! No. He was

Government Regulation By The Private Sector Essay
Introduction
Today, our nation is under constant attack by hackers, terrorist groups and other enemies.
Unfortunately regardless of how innovative our government or private sectors have become with
securing the network systems, the frequency and intensity of the attacks have only increased. Over the
last decade, security breaches and cyber attacks have highlighted how dependent our nation is on its
critical infrastructure. It was concluded that a total of 54% of cyber attacks targeted the US in 2013
(Watkins, n.d). Through experiences such as September 11, 2001, it has become apparent how
interconnected our infrastructure is and the exposure to targeted attacks we face as a nation (Katen,
2004). With the private industry owning over 85% of our nation s critical infrastructure, it is important
for the government to create and maintain regulations which should be followed by all agencies and
private sectors in order to protect our national security. There are several concerns about government
regulation by the private sector and how it will affect their consumers privacy and the company s
finances. However, the Cybersecurity Act of 2015 ensures user s privacy while sharing information
between companies and agencies. Furthermore, there are several effects on national security resulting
from failure to comply with government regulation, meeting only the minimum requirements and
exceeding the minimum requirement. With that being said, it has become part of the private

Brian Williams To Blame
Brian Williams is a newscaster and was formerly the anchor on the Nightly News which aired on
NBC. He began his career in broadcasting in 1981 working for a news station in Kansas, shortly after
he moved to New York City to work for WCBS. In 1993, Williams won his first Emmy for a report he
did on the stock market collapse which gained him his position at NBC. At NBC, Williams started out
as a White House correspondent. In 1996, he graduated from correspondent to anchor of CNBC and
MSNBC on the show The News with Brian Williams. Then in 2004, Williams took over as anchor for

Williams claimed that he was on one of the helicopters hit when he was reporting in Iraq in 2003,
however, he was actually on an unaffected helicopter that was flying nearby. Another claim that
Williams made was that he looked into the eyes of Egyptian soldiers that were riding horseback while
covering the Arab Spring in 2011. Yet according to Daily Mail (2015) this did not happen either;
Williams was on a balcony watching over Tahrir Square from a safe distance. The embellished stories
that Williams told do not alter the news value they just make him look more heroic. Much like the
flight engineer Lance Reynolds noted, Williams is trying to participate in events that he does not
deserve to participate in (Farhi, February 2015). Williams is brave to report on dangerous event
around the world, yet that does not give him the right to put himself in a story as the hero or as he said
himself steal anyone s valor . While the details that Williams added to each of his stories do not
change them significantly that cannot justify his actions. Williams ruined his own career because it is

The Nibelung Hero s Journey
A Hero s Journey consists of particularly long trials and tribulations, internally and externally, that
could shape their character into becoming a true hero or one that for all intents and purposes, fails on
their mission. Campbell has designed his own version of that, with set stages of the path that are
central to the model of the hero s story. The Ring of the Nibelung is a text written by Richard Wagner
consisting of four operas, one of which is titled The Valkyrie. In the Valkyrie, a character named
Sigmund is introduced to us, and his story follows pretty closely with what Joseph Campbell defines
as a Hero s Journey in his book Pathways to Bliss. In it, he argues that every time someone is labeled
as a hero in a story, there is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Sigmund s hero s journey, he eventually is sent the child of Signy and Siggeir as his first trial in
order to build up to his eventual goal of killing Siggeir. He kills two sons through testing them, and
finally stumbles upon a third boy ten years later named Sinfiotli. He immediately hits it off with
Sigmund, he has skin as touch as rocks and Sigmund can see his younger self in this child. Sigmund
and Sinfiotli ultimately attempt to murder Siggeir, but are captured and thrown in pit torture. Once
they sneak out of the pit they kill everyone who works in the castle, sparing Signy only to discover
that Sinfiotli is actually the son of Sigmund and Signy. It is at this exact moment that Sigmund s
journey aligns with how Campbell describes apotheosis, where you realize that you are what you are
seeking, he finds out that he has been seeking someone to aid him in killing Siggeir when he was the
one to do it in the end anyway, with his own flesh and blood son (Campbell 118). Even though the
circumstances were somewhat less than ideal, apotheosis allows Sigmund to discover himself towards
the end of his journey; Sinfiotli is literally Sigmund s offspring, he was the one to help his father kill
Siggeir, and he is what Sigmund was unconsciously seeking. In another compelling example, my
mother realized that what she had spent her time all along doing was searching for herself. In her
marriage she thought she found love but instead found only narcissism and manipulation, driving her
to understand that all she needed to seek in life was herself. She experienced her apotheosis moment
as she broke free and became herself. My mom is what she was seeking, Sigmund is who he was
seeking, their challenging existence led them to the point

What Would Jesus Do
What would Jesus do in regards to the social justice issue of immigration? Would he give immigrants
a fair and unbiased opportunity in a new country, or would he turn his back towards these hopeful
people? The Catholic Church teaches us that Jesus would support immigrants, live by the Catholic
Social Justice Themes and the Christian Feminist model of Justice, and give these people a fighting
chance in a new country. These ideologies represent hope, a more promising future for immigration,
and a change in how we see one another.
The two Catholic Social Justice themes that relate best to the issue of immigration are the themes of
global solidarity and rights and responsibilities.
Global solidarity is an important aspect of social life because it teaches us that people are an
interdependent race and that we all fit together into a larger and more unified community. We are all
one people, despite our many racial, economic, national, ideological, and religious differences. The
Catholic Social Teaching of global solidarity tells us that we are all brothers and sisters and that we
must take it upon ourselves to care for one another. We as humans are inherently social beings, so it is
biologically important for us to live together in communion. We find the most success and are the
most happy when we come together and exist as one, proving how important it is for immigrants to
live amongst us as one nation. It is crucial that our country welcome immigrants into the U.S. with

What Is Marriage Like In The 1800s
In life especially, 2,000 years ago, there was a path that women were expected to take. Marriage being
the number one decision and path they were supposed to endure. Today, women role in society has
changed tremendously since the 1800s. Women are now a little more equal to men. In Chopin, Kate.
The Story of an Hour and Hawthorne, Nathaniel. The Birth mark, two stories about gender role and

somethings were flawed.

direction from their instructor and make sure that everything make sans and it is spell correctly. For
example I was taught that the best way to writing an essay is to organize all the ideas, then write the

Religious Role In Canterbury Tales
During the Middle Ages in Medieval Europe, the Roman Catholic Church played an important role in
practically every aspect of life. It dominated and had a tremendous control over everyone. They
specifically had control over the decision of who goes to Heaven and who goes to Hell therefore
creating a sort of fear amongst people who believed that their souls were the most important thing they
had and that the only way for their souls to go Heaven was through the church. For this reason exactly,
some religious figures started to take advantage of their position knowing how devoted people were to
the church. This led to the formation of stereotypes towards them and triggered distaste toward the
church. Chaucer was one mainly affected by religion and the church; it played an important role in his
poem the Canterbury Tales where he used religious ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

In the book Omnivore s Dilemma and the article Eat Food: Food Defined by Michael Pollan, Pollan
informs us of the dangers of eating processed foods. He goes on to explain that in the modern age of
today, our diets are majorly composed of processed food, leading to health complications such as
obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Pollan advises us that we must stop eating processed food and
instead eat real food, in which he lists ways of obtaining real food, such as going to farmer s markets.
However I challenge Pollan s approach to obtaining real food as it is too costly and complicated, and
instead I will propose a different approach to obtaining real food by traditional means of hunting and
gathering. In the following I will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rules such as staying away from foods that our ancestors wouldn t recognize or contain high fructose
corn syrup. Pollan claims that buying food from farmers solves the complicated issue of our diets. I
don t believe this solves the omnivore s dilemma, it further complicates it. Pollan fails to define what
real food is, if he could have just specifically defined it as an organically grown or living specimen
that contains biological cells, and isn t processed, it would prevent us from second guessing while
shopping for real food. Also, even though we should eat more real foods, there have been cases of
produce being infected with bacteria or chemicals, meat being injected with chemically made steroids
and hormones. Obtaining real food isn t as easy as reading the food labels or staying away from the
center of the grocery store as Pollan describes it. After observing the potential flaws of Pollan s
approach to obtaining real food, I have found ways of obtaining real all natural food, without over
spending or worrying about processed ingredients and bacteria/steroids. I strongly believe we can
achieve this by using traditional ways of obtaining food, such as hunting, fishing, and house
gardening/farming. I myself and like many others have taken action to obtain real food, food that is
100% natural, food that we know exactly where it comes from.

Analysis Of A Valediction Forbidding Mourning
[Felicia Johnson]
[Literature 1102]
[05/04/2016]
An Analysis of A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning
All relationships must withstand the test of time and distance. When separating, a couple will
experience both physical and emotional anguish. Soulmates are said to experience a love with a
deeper connection. In this complex yet completely romantic poem, A Valediction: Forbidding
Mourning , John Donne employs conceit, symbolism, and tone to poetically paint a picture of the true
love that exist between a man and his wife. John Donne was born on January22, 1572 to a Catholic
family in England. ( John Donne Biography ) In his twenties Donne spent a lot of money on women,
books and traveling. ( John Donne Biography ) In 1601 Donne became a member of Parliament and
married Anne More. ( John Donne Biography ) Neither of the families approved of this union, and as a
result Donne was imprisoned for a while.( John Donne Biography ) The couple experienced financial
difficulty for 8 years until Donne was payed a proper dowry.( John Donne Biography ) John Donne
renounced his religion and became royal Chaplin in 1615. It was then that the world would have a
taste of the things that would later make him famous ( John Donne Biography ). He was known for the
eloquent sermons that made great use of his famous and elaborate metaphors. Donne fathered twelve
children. Donne s wife Anne died while giving birth to their twelfth child ( John Donne Biography ).

How Do Masks Affect The Use Of Mask
In this essay, I will argue that the use of masks is vital in creating a believable and consistent character
for performance. The techniques I have used in masks not only help define a character but have
improved my improvisation skills.
Jacques Lecoq wanted to explore the hidden gestures, emotions and underlying states of a character,
which we express through mimages [2002: P.109]. I incorporated both the mimages and Seven States
of Tension to help me to determine how my mask; Draco, would react in different situations.
As John Martin states, every part says something [2004: p.68]. This is something I tried to captivate in
my development of Draco. However, before I could look at how Draco would react with masks, I
needed to understand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Copying the arched eyebrow on the mask I found a smarmy, nasally voice, I enjoyed doing this as it
helped me to achieve the temperament of Draco; Choleric. I had to make sure I did not differentiate
from his features. As Rudlin states: You a prisoner of the mask [1994: P.35], thus meaning I was
bound by Draco s expressions.
Clocking was essential for Draco as he needed to constantly hold the audience s attention. It also
helped to pinpoint key moments; looking at the dirty rag, clock the audience, placing the rag
elsewhere. This moment also tied in with the characteristics of the Arlecchino.
Toby Wilsher states that countermask is one of the simplest but most effective tools [2007: p.30]. As
the countermask would help me achieve any emotion despite Draco s features I could flip him from
trickster to turmoil. It also affected my centre, taking me from a centre of my chest to my knees centre,
bringing Draco to the floor as his ever present sneer faded into a frown and a wail.
All the techniques I used to develop Draco helped me in creating a character. Each exercise helped me
to pin point Draco further and explore him in ways that non mask theatre would not. I prefer to act
with a mask however, it is easy to slip out of character, therefore the face of the mask must always be
pulled. I found if my facial expression slipped, the entire character began to

Intel Uses Total Quality Management
Intel, also known as Integrated Electronics, is a company that manufactures and sells various types of
electronic equipment and hardware. It was founded by Gordon Moore and Robert Noyce in 1968 and
has since grown to be a commonly used consumer brand. Intel must ensure that its products are
consistently well made, especially when its products affect the consumer s experience with the
technology he or she is using. Because Intel must implement quality in a wide variety of products, the
best practice for the company is to have a physical separation between its departments and to focus on
the quality of each individual aspect of its product creation; this will allow each department to
specialize in their work functions and allow the company to separate each task effectively.
Intel uses total quality management (TQM) to enhance the quality of its products, particularly its
microprocessors. TQM is a customer oriented philosophy which is centered on quality to result in
customer delight (Mystica, Bai 10). The overall goal of TQM is to focus on the following three pillars:
continuous improvement, involvement of everyone, and achievement of customer satisfaction. The
third pillar, achievement of customer satisfaction, has allowed Intel to fully implement TQM. It has
helped to improve the communities around it by transferring its knowledge of the total quality concept
to local schools and helping them to apply those principles (Anfuso). Because of Intel s quality
management

Ode To A Nightingale Essay
Ode to a Nightingale
In Ode to a Nightingale, John Keats, the author and narrator, used descript terminology to express the
deep rooted pain he was suffering during his battle with tuberculosis. This poem has eight paragraphs
or verses of ten lines each and doesn t follow any specific rhyme scheme. In the first paragraph, Keats
gave away the mood of the whole poem with his metaphors for his emotional and physical sufferings,
for example: My heart aches, and drowsy numbness pains
My sense (1 2) Keats then went on to explain to the reader that he was speaking to the light winged
Dryad in the poem.
This bird symbolizes a Nightingale that to many, depicts the happiness and vibrance of life with the
way it seems to gracefully hover over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He expresses that with the phrase:
And with thee fade away into the forest dim (20) Keats explained that he had wanted to wander off
into the forest so no one would ve had to be bothered by him. In paragraph four, Keats had spoken to
the Nightingale and told it to go off and leave him alone because he already had known that death was
coming and didn t want to be reminded of his sad fate. Keats went on to say: I cannot see what flowers
are at my feet, Nor what soft incense hangs upon the boughs, But, in embalmed darkness... (41 43)
This meant he didn t know what was about to happen, only that he was going to die. He then
illustrated all the creatures and things that would live long past him; The grass, the thicket, and the
fruit tree wild... (45)
In paragraph six, Keats had listened to the Darkling or Nightingale singing and this had reminded him
of how at one time in his life he questioned death and was even infatuated by it because death was an
unknown universe when he composed: ...for many a time I have been half in love with easeful
Death, Call d him soft names... (51 53) But quickly after he had recalled that memory he stated: Still
wouldst thou sing, and I have ears in vain To thy high requiem become a sod. (59 60)
Here he was saying how the Darkling sounded beautiful when it sang but that was just a mask for the
fate that it was taking him to; death. Thou was not born for death, immortal Bird! (61) The immortal

Economic Espionage Essay
Economic Espionage act (1996) states that
Whoever, intending or knowing that the offense will benefit any foreign government, foreign
instrumentality, or foreign agent, knowingly without authorization copies, duplicates, sketches, draws,

not more than $500,000 or imprisoned not more than 15 years, or both. .

According to a Annual Report to Congress on Foreign Economic Collection and Industrial Espionage
(2008), a wide variety of foreign entities have attempted to illegally acquire trade secrets and US
technology a problem attributed to outsourcing research and development. Most companies in the
United States have been encouraging outsourcing research and development as a means improving
themselves in terms of products being universally usable. This has led such companies setting up
bases in foreign countries where such research is carried out. These bases have well been used as a
gateway for economical espionage since foreign entities can easily access such bases and access
information on the said companies or U.S in general. This may be through employees in such bases,
spies or even hacking information systems that are connected the ones in the U.S. Acquisition of
information and technology from such companies has well been used to either disable operations of
such bases or setting up rival companies. It is worth noting that espionage from such bases is hard
trace or quantify. This is because the jurisdiction of such states cannot be influenced or forced to take
measures of such activities due to the nation s sovereignty. Legal cases in such incidents are left
pending for fear of bad international relations and investigations are hardly finished. Economic

Superheroes In The Watchmen Character Analysis
I heard joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he s depressed. Life seems harsh, and cruel. Says he feels
all alone in threatening world. Doctor says: Treatment is simple. The great clown Pagliacci is in town.
Go see him. That should pick you up. Man bursts into tears. But doctor... he says I am Pagliacci. Good
joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains (Moore. 64).
The quote is a perfect representation of how complex and psychologically damaged the characters
truly are, proof of their sad and lonesome lives. Almost all of the characters had some sort of dark and
significant event which allowed them to become what they are known as. Thus, transforming them
into characters hardly any normal person can relate with, a chain each one of the characters must bear.
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? (Who watches the watchmen?) Superheroes in the Watchmen are given
liberties to enact certain rules, but how does the public really know if said heroes are following the
same rules they abide. It is a testament to the large amount of power granted to certain authoritative
figures and how that said figure is able to abuse that power. I believe that these two quotes in a way,
coincide, while the Watchmen are rescuing others, who is there to rescue the Watchmen? That sad and
unpleasant truth is evidence, that in the end, there is simply no one that can offer Pagliacci the
treatment he desperately needs.
Is this what happens to us? A life of conflict with no time for friends... so that when it s done, only our
enemies leave roses (Moore. 43).
Stated by Rorschach after the death of the Comedian, the quote represents the burdens of a busy life of
crime fighting and its effect towards the man under the mask. The Comedian, due to his behavior and
lack morals, was disliked by the heroes fought beside him, thus, often being lonely. In itself is a
tragedy, that the character who is named The Comedian , was never really happy, despite always
having a grin and his signature smiley face button.
Any two or more students who submit the same quote selection and/or analysis will earn zeroes for the
Summer Reading Assessment.

Rise Of Carthage Research Paper
After so many battles, such as against the Latins, Etruscans, and the Samnites, Rome was at her
strongest than ever before. The Romans had such great power, that they wanted more than just the
conquering of Italy (Morey, 1901). In the ambition for more, the Romans encountered the city of
Carthage which was a growing city building upon their strength that Rome wished acquire (Morey,
1901). In the following we will take a look at how the city of Carthage began, the power that each city
contained, and how such ambitions led to Rome becoming a great naval power.
The rise of the Carthaginians
According to Morey (1901), Carthage came to be the capital of a great commercial empire on the
northern coast of Africa. Carthage was first known as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Romans delayed in whether deciding to help out or not, but soon realized that if they didn t,
Carthage would be called and acquire part of the island (Morey, 1901). It was due to their late arrival,
that a Carthaginian garrison had been already admitted in the city and conquered most of the
surrounding cities of the island (Morey, 1901). The Romans, though, achieved the possession of
Messana (Morey, 1901). The king of Syracuse along with the Carthaginians attempted to remove the
Romans out of Sicily (Morey, 1901). But the Romans showed their greater strength at land against
both, the king and the Carthaginians, and which led the king to overturn their alliance in favor of the
Romans (Morey, 1901).
The Romans then knew that in order to win the battle against the Carthaginians, they would need a
stronger navy to fight at sea (Morey, 1901). So the Romans constructed 100 replica vessels of a
Carthaginian vessel that had wrecked in the coast of Italy, within 60 days (Morey, 1901). At the same
time, Roman soldiers were being trained to row the vessels, and train to encounter the Carthaginians
hand to hand while at sea (Morey,

Odysseus And Amari And Epic Hero Journeys In The Odyssey...
Every now and then we read different stories, but we see the same things. In the Odyssey and Copper
Sun, the two main characters, Odysseus and Amari, shared the same qualities and Epic Hero journeys.
They had many obstacles and tribulations, but they worked through them to make it to their
destination. Odysseus and Amari have many similarities as well as differences. When an epic hero,
like Amari and Odysseus, has the opportunity to face the unknown, or has a crisis, and has something
to gain, this starts the beginning of their journey called The Call. During this period, the heroes go
through things, in their eyes, that is unimaginable or wasn t expected. Odysseus s call was more
voluntary and exciting than Amari s call because his Call was when he won the Trojan War and could
return home after ten years. Amari s Call was when she and a few others from her tribe were captured
and taken as slaves after her family was killed and her village destroyed. Odysseus had a choice but
Amari did not. Before The Call , Amari and Odysseus characteristics affected and predestined their
journey. Two epic hero qualities, Noble Birth and Cultural Legend, set up Amari and Odysseus path.
Odysseus Noble Birth quality was that he was the son of Laertes, a hero, and his Cultural Legend was
being a war hero and the King of Ithaca. Amari s Noble Birth quality was that her family was
considered royalty because her father was an elder of her tribe, Ewe, he was a favored storyteller, and
her family was skilled weavers. Her Cultural Legend couldn t be fulfilled because she was to inherit
the family business of weaving. Although Amari didn t become a Cultural Legend, they both had
purpose due to their family s high rank in their culture. The next stage in an epic hero s journey is The
Threshold. This is where the hero takes off and meets helpers and mentors along the way. Odysseus
threshold was when Zeus guards and guides him, blessing him or punishing him for his actions. Amari
s Threshold was when she got on the slave ships to sail to America, meeting a mentor named Afi, who
encourages her and helps her through their long journey across the seas. She also meets a man named
Bill who helped her escape nights from abuse and

  • 2. Anesthesia Paper The Study of Anesthesia: History, Chemistry, and Activity By Cordell Jones The Description of Anesthesia, It s Effects, its Careers, and it s Future By Cordell Jones Introduction In 1591, a young mother was dragged from her home and taken away. Her mercy pleas were ignored, and she was thrown intro a pit and buried alive. What was this mother s crime? She had given birth to twin sons, and during her labor she had asked for some pain relief. The Church regarded the pain of childbirth as a punishment justly inflicted by God. The ultimate intent of her persecution was to discourage other women from making the same decision. You can tell today s society is less diluted by medicine and anesthesia. Now if ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The anesthetic was developed by scientists at Baxter Laboratories. It was used in clinical use in Japan in 1990. Third, sodium pentothal was founded in the early 1930s by Ernest H. Volwiler and Donalee L. Tabern, working for Abbot Laboratories. It was first used in humans on March 8, 1934, by Dr. Ralph M. Walters in a study of its properties. Three months later, Dr. John S. Lundy started a clinical trial of thiopental at the mayo Clinic at request of Abbott. (Wikipedia, 2010) Fourth, halothane was first synthesized by C. W. Suckling of Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in 1951 and was first used by M. Johnstone in Manchester in 1956. Halothane became popular as a nonflammable general anesthetic replacing other volatile anesthetics such as diethyl ether and cyclopropane. (Wikipedia, 2010) Halothane is no longer used in the U.S. because of its problems, such as it took it a long time to put a patient asleep and then longer to wake the patient back up. Plus if the patient is put under for a longer amount of time during a operation more gas will build up in the fats and then later go up to the brain. (Kervin, 2010) Fifth, lidocaine, the first amino amide type local anesthetic of its time, was first synthesized under the name Xylocaine by Swedish chemist Niles Löfgren in 1943. Bengt Lundqvist performed the first injection experiment on himself. It was first marketed in 1949. (Wikipedia, 2010) Lastly, benzocaine was fist synthesized in 1890 by German ... • 3. Animal Testing And Its Effects On Human Health Millions of animals suffer and die unnecessarily each year as they become subjects for medical testing and other horrendous experiments. Although some people believe such activities are necessary to progress in medical research, in reality it does very little to improve human health and development. For decades, drug and chemical safety assessments have been based on laboratory experimentations involving rabbits, dogs, rodents, and other animals. Consequently, nine out of ten drugs proven safe and effective in animals fail when given to humans. Animal testing is unreliable and unnecessary and there are more effective research methods out there that do not come at the expense of innocent animals lives. Everyone acknowledges that animals and humans are similar in more ways than one. Animal testing has proven to be a valuable asset in scientific research, cosmetic manufacturing, and drug development ( About Us ). Animal research, testing, and experimentation has assisted other countries, for example, in the United Kingdom over 400,000 people with Type 1 diabetes now have insulin to rely on. Animal research and testing has played a part in almost every medical breakthrough of the last century. It has saved hundreds of millions of lives worldwide... Former UK Home Office Minister Joan Ryan. According to the House of Lords Select Committee experimentations on animals have contributed greatly to scientific advances . • 4. Roe V. Wade Summary while at the same time not talk over the reader s head or bore them to death with legal writing. Mr. Forsythe has collected original research that has exposed new pieces of evidences about important problems dealing with the legal reasoning choices and the pieces of evidences mentioned in the people s majority opinions. There are several things to learn about this particular aspect of the legal system, however, the one that stuck out the most is the understanding of words when it comes to certain laws. The meaning of words in a written law and how people interpret or understand them is extremely important, especially when dealing with such a controversial case. For example, Roe has two vital rulings that are based on the Fourteenth Amendment, which says that no state shall deprive any person of liberty (pg. 7). The Justices, who decided this case, interpreted the terms liberty and unborn in certain ways that favored their ruling in Roe v. Wade. According to Forsythe, the Justices first interpreted liberty to include a right to privacy and held that abortion is part of that right to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wade the most intriguing thing about this book is that the Justices pushed aside any procedural questions concerning this case and decided the abortion law with no factual records. The book describes how in the lower court hearings of this case both sides did not present any actual evidence, there were no trials that went on, and the judges didn t even bother to look at the evidence. The same thing goes for the higher up courts. The federal court hearings went along without looking into any medical concerns or any other indications as well. They also did not involve any witnesses that could have been subjected for cross examination. To make matters seem worse the federal statute of 1970 made it so that no intermediate appellate court could conduct a screening for any possible ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Discuss The Arguments In Favour Of British Imperialism Dirks argues we should look past colonial justifications of higher principles such as Liberty, Democracy or a civilising impulse and recognise them as excuses for domination and exploitation . However, the confident and aggrandising attitude is crucial to understanding why the British presumed that their white settler colonies would desire a closer union, and why others were excluded. J. S. Mill s, who studied the empire as a scholar and as an official of the East India Company thought that different types of possessions [are] to be governed in different ways depending on the stages of civilisation they had reached and because of this civilising aim any failure was blamed on the precolonial past . As Sullivan has noted, like James ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the difficulties of a creating an agreed constitutional formula exposed that a coherent ideology was out of grasp. Political structures and Britain s role within them were of particular concern as for Froude one free people cannot govern another free people . An anonymous article in 1873 argued for a really Imperial Parliament in place of the English, Welsh and Scotch, and Irish one that wrongly goes by that name . There was particular concern over Britain s future role; whether it would be first amongst equals, maintain her status, or be equal with perhaps power centred not in Westminster, but in a federal head. Dilke argued that the issue of central government as the choice of capital will, here as in Canada, be a matter of peculiar difficulty . Also, ambiguous vocabulary with federations , confederations , and commonwealths whilst in one way was a strength in attracting many to the cause, meant disagreement was inevitable. Bell compares Seeley with anti Imperialist and opponent Goldwin Smith to show that they shared a broad consensus about the world and Britain s place within it, as Smith, nicknamed Little Englander advocated unity, but contrasting Seeley, believed it would come from residue loyalty to England. At this point, Bone and Daddy Glen s relationship throughout the book took a turn and their relationship consisted of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. In the book, Daddy Glen would physically abuse Bone for nothing. Bone never did anything wrong to him to deserve what he did to her. Bone and Daddy Glen never got along from the beginning. Daddy Glen s reputation for a hot temper made people very careful how they talked to him (Bastard Out of Carolina 55). Glen had a temper and when he got mad, he would take it out on Bone. Daddy Glen looked at me standing there. I know how much your mamma loves you, he said, putting his hand on my arm, squeezing tight. When he let me go, there was a bruise, and Mama saw it right away. • 9. Government Regulation By The Private Sector Essay Introduction Today, our nation is under constant attack by hackers, terrorist groups and other enemies. Unfortunately regardless of how innovative our government or private sectors have become with securing the network systems, the frequency and intensity of the attacks have only increased. Over the last decade, security breaches and cyber attacks have highlighted how dependent our nation is on its critical infrastructure. It was concluded that a total of 54% of cyber attacks targeted the US in 2013 (Watkins, n.d). Through experiences such as September 11, 2001, it has become apparent how interconnected our infrastructure is and the exposure to targeted attacks we face as a nation (Katen, 2004). With the private industry owning over 85% of our nation s critical infrastructure, it is important for the government to create and maintain regulations which should be followed by all agencies and private sectors in order to protect our national security. There are several concerns about government regulation by the private sector and how it will affect their consumers privacy and the company s finances. However, the Cybersecurity Act of 2015 ensures user s privacy while sharing information between companies and agencies. Furthermore, there are several effects on national security resulting from failure to comply with government regulation, meeting only the minimum requirements and exceeding the minimum requirement. Yet according to Daily Mail (2015) this did not happen either; Williams was on a balcony watching over Tahrir Square from a safe distance. The embellished stories that Williams told do not alter the news value they just make him look more heroic. Much like the flight engineer Lance Reynolds noted, Williams is trying to participate in events that he does not deserve to participate in (Farhi, February 2015). • 13. The Nibelung Hero s Journey A Hero s Journey consists of particularly long trials and tribulations, internally and externally, that could shape their character into becoming a true hero or one that for all intents and purposes, fails on their mission. Campbell has designed his own version of that, with set stages of the path that are central to the model of the hero s story. The Ring of the Nibelung is a text written by Richard Wagner consisting of four operas, one of which is titled The Valkyrie. In the Valkyrie, a character named Sigmund is introduced to us, and his story follows pretty closely with what Joseph Campbell defines as a Hero s Journey in his book Pathways to Bliss. In Sigmund s hero s journey, he eventually is sent the child of Signy and Siggeir as his first trial in order to build up to his eventual goal of killing Siggeir. He kills two sons through testing them, and finally stumbles upon a third boy ten years later named Sinfiotli. He immediately hits it off with Sigmund, he has skin as touch as rocks and Sigmund can see his younger self in this child. Sigmund and Sinfiotli ultimately attempt to murder Siggeir, but are captured and thrown in pit torture. Once they sneak out of the pit they kill everyone who works in the castle, sparing Signy only to discover that Sinfiotli is actually the son of Sigmund and Signy. It is at this exact moment that Sigmund s journey aligns with how Campbell describes apotheosis, where you realize that you are what you are seeking, he finds out that he has been seeking someone to aid him in killing Siggeir when he was the one to do it in the end anyway, with his own flesh and blood son (Campbell 118). Even though the circumstances were somewhat less than ideal, apotheosis allows Sigmund to discover himself towards the end of his journey; Sinfiotli is literally Sigmund s offspring, he was the one to help his father kill Siggeir, and he is what Sigmund was unconsciously seeking. In another compelling example, my mother realized that what she had spent her time all along doing was searching for herself. In her marriage she thought she found love but instead found only narcissism and manipulation, driving her to understand that all she needed to seek in life was herself. She experienced her apotheosis moment as she broke free and became herself. My mom is what she was seeking, Sigmund is who he was seeking, their challenging existence led them to the point ... • 14. What Would Jesus Do What would Jesus do in regards to the social justice issue of immigration? Would he give immigrants a fair and unbiased opportunity in a new country, or would he turn his back towards these hopeful people? The Catholic Church teaches us that Jesus would support immigrants, live by the Catholic Social Justice Themes and the Christian Feminist model of Justice, and give these people a fighting chance in a new country. These ideologies represent hope, a more promising future for immigration, and a change in how we see one another. The two Catholic Social Justice themes that relate best to the issue of immigration are the themes of global solidarity and rights and responsibilities. Global solidarity is an important aspect of social life because it teaches us that people are an interdependent race and that we all fit together into a larger and more unified community. We are all one people, despite our many racial, economic, national, ideological, and religious differences. The Catholic Social Teaching of global solidarity tells us that we are all brothers and sisters and that we must take it upon ourselves to care for one another. We as humans are inherently social beings, so it is biologically important for us to live together in communion. We find the most success and are the most happy when we come together and exist as one, proving how important it is for immigrants to live amongst us as one nation. They specifically had control over the decision of who goes to Heaven and who goes to Hell therefore creating a sort of fear amongst people who believed that their souls were the most important thing they had and that the only way for their souls to go Heaven was through the church. For this reason exactly, some religious figures started to take advantage of their position knowing how devoted people were to the church. Pollan advises us that we must stop eating processed food and instead eat real food, in which he lists ways of obtaining real food, such as going to farmer s markets. Pollan fails to define what real food is, if he could have just specifically defined it as an organically grown or living specimen that contains biological cells, and isn t processed, it would prevent us from second guessing while shopping for real food. Intel must ensure that its products are consistently well made, especially when its products affect the consumer s experience with the technology he or she is using. Doctor says: Treatment is simple. The great clown Pagliacci is in town. Go see him. That should pick you up. Man bursts into tears. But doctor... he says I am Pagliacci. Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains (Moore. 64). The quote is a perfect representation of how complex and psychologically damaged the characters truly are, proof of their sad and lonesome lives. Almost all of the characters had some sort of dark and significant event which allowed them to become what they are known as. Thus, transforming them into characters hardly any normal person can relate with, a chain each one of the characters must bear. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? (Who watches the watchmen?) Superheroes in the Watchmen are given liberties to enact certain rules, but how does the public really know if said heroes are following the same rules they abide. It is a testament to the large amount of power granted to certain authoritative figures and how that said figure is able to abuse that power. I believe that these two quotes in a way, coincide, while the Watchmen are rescuing others, who is there to rescue the Watchmen? That sad and unpleasant truth is evidence, that in the end, there is simply no one that can offer Pagliacci the treatment he desperately needs. Is this what happens to us? • 32. Odysseus And Amari And Epic Hero Journeys In The Odyssey... Every now and then we read different stories, but we see the same things. In the Odyssey and Copper Sun, the two main characters, Odysseus and Amari, shared the same qualities and Epic Hero journeys. They had many obstacles and tribulations, but they worked through them to make it to their destination. Odysseus and Amari have many similarities as well as differences. When an epic hero, like Amari and Odysseus, has the opportunity to face the unknown, or has a crisis, and has something to gain, this starts the beginning of their journey called The Call. During this period, the heroes go through things, in their eyes, that is unimaginable or wasn t expected. Odysseus s call was more voluntary and exciting than Amari s call because his Call was when he won the Trojan War and could return home after ten years. Amari s Call was when she and a few others from her tribe were captured and taken as slaves after her family was killed and her village destroyed. Odysseus had a choice but Amari did not. Before The Call , Amari and Odysseus characteristics affected and predestined their journey. Two epic hero qualities, Noble Birth and Cultural Legend, set up Amari and Odysseus path. Odysseus Noble Birth quality was that he was the son of Laertes, a hero, and his Cultural Legend was being a war hero and the King of Ithaca. Amari s Noble Birth quality was that her family was considered royalty because her father was an elder of her tribe, Ewe, he was a favored storyteller, and her family was skilled weavers. Her Cultural Legend couldn t be fulfilled because she was to inherit the family business of weaving. Although Amari didn t become a Cultural Legend, they both had purpose due to their family s high rank in their culture. The next stage in an epic hero s journey is The Threshold. This is where the hero takes off and meets helpers and mentors along the way. Odysseus threshold was when Zeus guards and guides him, blessing him or punishing him for his actions. Amari s Threshold was when she got on the slave ships to sail to America, meeting a mentor named Afi, who encourages her and helps her through their long journey across the seas. She also meets a man named Bill who helped her escape nights from abuse and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
