This document provides details on the planning and initial work for creating caricature models of the band The Cure in a low poly art style for a project. It discusses the band members that will be modeled - Robert Smith, Porl Thompson, Simon Gallup, and Boris Williams. Reference images and initial sketches of exaggerated facial features are shown. A basic low poly body model is created to build the characters from. Next steps include refining Simon and Boris' caricatures, starting character models for Robert and Porl, and creating a simple background scene from a Cure music video.

Plant” and “The Glove”

3. Style
From my initial research I’ve found 3 different types of caricaturing, the stereotypical drawing
that exaggerates all the facial features of the subject, the digital manipulation where a photo
Is taken and distorted in places. I personally don’t like this method because it seems too lazy and
The results are less appealing. The third method is a very simple drawing where all the features
Are distorted. I think this method is the best for this project because our final results will need to
Be low poly and simple, with most of the detail coming from the textures.
A range of these methods can be found on my Pinterest board here
4. Setting and Background
I will be basing my background off one of The Cure’s music videos
“Love song”. This is one of their biggest songs so I will also base my
designs on it.
I can create the walls with cubes and pyramids and the stalagmites
with distorted cubes and pyramids.
5. Clothing
This is the picture that ill be basing the characters clothing off, they
are often seen wearing this attire. It will also be very easy to
replicate in low poly which is very important. I want to keep the
poly count very low because of the bands hair style which I
imagine will take a lot of polygons.
6. Robert Smith
These are the images that I based the
caricatures on. I noticed that he has a large
forehead, dark eyes and a double chin so I
exaggerated them. Below are the sketches I
created for him.
7. Porl Thompson
Porl was easy to do, he has a very flappy
face with a huge nose, I also gave him no
eyes because of his sad face.
8. Simon Gallup
Simon was quite difficult because he has
so few outstanding features apart from
his nose. Because of this I gave him a pot
shaped face and pointed nose. I would
like to have done better with this one but
there wasn’t much I could do with it,
especially since all the photos of him are
so varied
9. Boris Williams
Boris was also a bit difficult I gave him
glasses so that I wouldn’t have to model
eyes later, I also gave him a larger nose
and crooked teeth.
10. Modelling
So far I have only modelled the base body for the caricatures, this
body will be used as a start point for all 4 of my characters.
This is the body ive created, its 113 polys but I
can still reduce that. Its based loosely off the outfit
that the band wore in the video earlier.
I think it looks quite good when turbosmoothed,
It just need editing slightly
11. To do list
I will be looking into Simon and Boris’ history and personality to help create a
better caricature for them both.
I will begin creating models based on Porl and Robert to get a better idea of my
polygon limitations .
I will create a simple background to place the characters in. It will be based off
the same video as the outfits.
