1. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to the full product?
In my Preliminary task I did not have to learn a great deal on camera angles as all I really
focused on was the 180degree rule. Whereas, in my main task I had to focus more on the
actual angles, things like; the size of the shot, the head and nose room (anticipatory
framing), the camera movement, panning and tilting. The reason why i had to learn this is
because i wanted to make my angels correct. During my preliminary task I practiced a lot
on the camera to make sure my camera skills were advancing and so that i had a better
knowledge of where the framing should be.
I feel that I have learnt a better understanding of mise-en-scene as in my preliminary task
there was no thought given to representation: hair, make-up, props, costume, lighting and
the location. In my main task i had to use all of them things to represent the issue in my
introduction. I used things such as; a fish tank with three fish inside, to resemble my main
characters and how they are trapped inside a dead end with no way out. I used a trophy to
give a clue that my character had some sort of connection with sports. I also set my
location inside a house which was not low budget or on an estate but was a small lower/
middle class house. The reason why i chose to set my location there is because i wanted
to challenge the stereotypical saying only estates have issues with neglect and drugs etc.
but anywhere can to.
In my preliminary task I did not have to add sound beyond the diegetic dialogue, no titles
and no sound track. However, In my main task this was very important as I had to add my
title sequence to make my film intro loo professional. The editing occurred a lot of different
things in my main task then my preliminary task. When I was editing my preliminary task I
did not have to use any title sequence, no soundtrack or no sound beyond diegetic
dialogue. But in my main task I have added music (non-diegetic sound against diegetic
sound) to create tension to the audience. I had to add a title sequence to introduce the
main characters, the director, the music composer etc. I also had to add the film title.
In my main task I learnt more on the genre of social realism and what it really meant and
the conventions of the genre. For example, the technical code of lighting is used in some
way in all film genres. It is a convention of the ‘social realism’ genre, Low key lighting is
used to create suspense and a dull scene to make the film look more efficient and realistic
- an integral part of any social realism film.
Whilst I was creating my preliminary task I had no thought given to representation such as;
Hair and make-up, props, costume, lighting, location and how all of these create meaning.
On the other hand, representation had a substantial impact on my main task as my
location in my main task shows that he is from a middle/lower classed family or upbringing
and lives in a small house. Also, the costume of a tracksuit and running shoes resembles
that he has something to do with sports.
Camera angels was not a massive deal in my preliminary task as all I needed to now was
the 180 degree rule and how it worked. However, throughout my main task I have learnt
that the camera angles are an important part to a film. The camera angles are what brings
a scene suspense and keeps the audience clawed in, it can also tell us a lot more about
the characters and what part their role is. For example; a birds eye angle (high angle)
which is looking down on an object/person makes them look small and scared, but when
2. the camera is looking up (low angle) makes the object/person look very big and
intimidating. This is an issue of ‘bully VS victim’
