In the novel The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, the characters are over exaggerated, to state a
clear point that this is not a normal story. The story does not follow a regular story line, but one that
Robert Cormier decides is fit in his mind and he over exaggerates it aswell for an effect to state his
point that, not every time you disturb the universe something good comes out.
Robert Cormier wanted the characters be different, he did not make them how others wanted, being
socially acceptable, he wrote the book how he thought it should have went in his mind, and doing so
he gave the readers some new to read not just the everyday novel. Cormier gives the reader many
examples of figurative language to express the real meaning of the story for example, Caroni watched
the chalk in Brother Leon s hands, the way the teacher pressed it, rolled it, his fingers like the legs of
spiders with a victim in their clutch. (90) In this quote Cormier gives a similar to exaggerate about
how Brother Leon was holding the chalk in his hands. It sends a powerful message to the reader that
Brother Leon is a horrible man, who had no mercy and he is seen by others as a powerful
administrator in the school using quid pro quo in his own evil type of way. Cormier also uses more
figurative language to give a specific emotion that Cormier was trying to express throughout his
novel, that not every time someone disturbs the universe something good comes out of it. What
happened with Renault was bad enough, but there was violence in the air. (209) This quote is the the
example that even though Renault did disturb the universe and did try to stop the chocolate sale, he
failed and something bad happened to him for trying. In the end Jerry s attempts to stop the chocolate

but still undefeated. And many readers dislike Cormiers way to end the book in a way that the hero

In Alice Walker s short story, Everyday Use , the mother daughter conflict theme is portrayed in the
entire story. The oldest daughter Dee constantly believes that she is better than then everyone else in
the family. This has caused a family feud about who gets the quilt. The quilt was very cherished
because it was a family heirloom. Dee has always had a lot of power over her family and she soon
finds out that it is going to end soon. The biggest problem lies between Mama and Dee. This is clearly
illustrated by Dee s selfish behavior, high standards, and her her ignorance about her family s heritage.
Dee s superiority stems from the fact that she sets high standards for Mama, which in turn causes
Mama to feel inferior to Dee. Dee demands Mama to act a certain way, which is reminiscent of a
television show. On TV mother and child embrace and smile in each other s faces. Sometimes the
mother and father weep, the child wraps them in her arms and leans across the table and tell how she
would have made it without her help (paragraph 3). This description is the polar oppositeness of how
Dee acts towards her mother; Mama is well aware of the fact that her own daughter will never
embrace her like the people in the TV shows. Another major flaw of Dee s is that she acts ashamed of
both Mama and her family s background. Dee s impossibly high standards drive the ones who should
be closest to her, her family, away. She is constantly nagging and is persistent at finding things she
thinks need to be fixed, even going so far as being hypocritical about these various fixings. Mama says
she pins on my dress a large orchid, even though she has told me once that she thinks orchids are
tacky flowers (paragraph 4). Dee needs everything to be luxurious and elegant in her life. But even the
first glimpse of leg out of the car tells me it is Dee. Her feet were always near looking, as if God

I find it interesting that for people who have no religious affiliation, or belief in God, form these
groups of nones , atheists, or agonists. What strikes me as interesting is that while they may not
believe or struggle to believe or support a particular faith or religion, they feel the need to form large
groups or organizations that defends their right not to believe. We all have our basic human rights and
freedoms to express ourselves as we see personally fit. So why do people feel the need to defend that
or even hide it? I found this article interesting for various reasons. It really did not surprise me to learn
that almost a quarter of the population in the United States makes up this group of nones. While that
may not seem like the majority of the population, I feel like that number will begin to climb as our
future generations grow up. I think for the longest time our culture and politics were based heavily on
religious influences for fear of backlash and disapproval from the general population. Today people

their religion, color, sex, or even their sexual preference. I think because of these things, people no

December 7, 1993, Colin Ferguson began to execute passengers randomly on a New York commuter

Colin Ferguson was born January 14, 1959 in Kingston, Jamaica. His father Von Herman was the
managing director for Hercules Agencies, a large pharmaceutical company. Mr. Herman was highly
regarded and recognized as a prominent businessman in Jamaica (Montaldo, 2017). Ferguson had four
brothers and afforded the privileges that wealth offers in an extreme poverty area. He graduated from
Calabar High School in 1969 with a grade average that was ranked in the top third of his class
(Montaldo, 2017). In 1978 his father was killed in a car crash and a short time later his mother died
from cancer. He would then suffer the loss of the family fortune. At 23 years old Ferguson left

different than American cultures. A study completed in 1997 concerning 225 Jamaican adults, it was
found that Jamaican men were considered coarse, reckless, aggressive, lazy, tough, arrogant, stern,
disorderly, robust, rigid, autocratic, courageous, and hard headed (Carpenter Walters, 2011). The only
job Ferguson could get were low paying and menial. He blamed racist Americans for this problem
(Montaldo, 2017). He got married to an American citizen who was also of Jamaican descent. They
soon moved to Long Island but Ferguson continued to be frustrated with reports of loss of temper and
outrage and racial bigotry toward white people who he felt stood in his way (Montaldo, 2017). In
Jamaica he was born into one of the top families in Kingston. Government and top military members
attended his father s funeral but in America he was not given this honor which appeared to cause him
to continue his hatred toward white people (Montaldo, 2017). His marriage did not last due to his
