Tet Turning Point
Important congressional and media voices reacted with even greater skepticism toward administration
claims that Tet constituted an unequivocal military triumph for the United States. The professional
media correspondents basically did their job and reported the dramatic turn of events as it was
happening. Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News World Report, the country s three leading weekly news
magazines, characterized Tet as a major psychological setback for the United States. Cronkite s stark
evaluation was a turning point in America s reaction to the Tet attacks, just as Tet marked a turning
point in the U.S. experience in Vietnam. If I ve lost Cronkite, President Lyndon Johnson lamented, I
ve lost middle America. Needless to say ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After early 1968 it was evident that the United States would not soon or successfully conclude its
involvement in Indochina. The size and breadth of the attack were stunning enough, but the images
coming out of South Vietnam in the early days added to the shock and impact of the Tet Offensive.
Television reports showed the fighting on the embassy grounds, chaos in the streets of Saigon, the
assassination of an NLF prisoner by a South Vietnamese general on a Saigon street, and pitched
battles in other cities such as Hue, while the Associated Press reported an American officer in the
village of Ben Tre stating that, we had to destroy it in order to save it. As Kathleen Turner, author of
Lyndon B. Johnson s Dual War, writes, With Tet...the fighting was suddenly, inescapably, terrifyingly
close to the Saigon based news teams. The proximity of the battle guaranteed extensive coverage by
media institutions: it was easily accessible, and it was for many the first extended view of the enemy.
Walter Cronkite on the first reports of Tet asking, What the hell is going? I thought we were winning
the war! Tet dominated the news coverage on television, newspapers, and magazines as people
followed the fighting in Saigon, Hue, and Khe Sanh and saw the destruction and dislocation that was
occurring throughout

Jeremy Bentham Principles Of Utilitarianism
Jeremy Bentham was born in Houndsditch, London on 15 February 1748. He was the eldest son of
Alicia Whitehorn, née Grove, who on 3 October 1745 had entered into he second marriage with
Jeremiah Bentham, a successful practitioner in the Court of Chancery. Six further children were born,
of whom only the youngest, Samuel, born in 1757, survived beyond infancy. Death was never far
away and on 6 January 1759, when Jeremy was ten years old, he lost his mother. By 1755 he was
considered robust enough to go to Westminster School. It was in 1769 that Bentham found a purpose
for his life. All the pieces of the jigsaw suddenly came into place. His later reflections on this period of
his life reveal an exposure to a very different literature from the ... Show more content on

Bentham brought together various elements from these thinkers to construct his version of the
principle of UTILITY.
UTILITARIANISM:
Jeremy Bentham was a leading theorist in Anglo American philosophy of law and one of the founders
of utilitarianism. He developed this idea of a utility and a utilitarian calculus in the Introduction to the
Principles of Morals and Legislation (1781).In the beginning of that work Bentham wrote: Nature has
placed mankind under the governance of two sovereign masters, pain and pleasure. It is for them alone
to point out what we ought to do, as well as to determine what we shall do. On the one hand the
standard of right and wrong, on the other the chain of causes and effects, are fastened to their throne.
They govern us in all we do, in all we say, in all we think: every effort we can make to throw off our
subjection, will serve but to demonstrate and confirm it.
Bentham believed that pain and pleasure not only explain our actions but also help us define what is
good and moral. He believed that this foundation could provide a basis for social, legal, and moral
reform in society. To determine whether an action is moral you merely have to calculate the good

Role Of The Private Limited Company
1.0 Introduction Incorporation is forming of a new corporation. A corporation is like a legal entity that
can be effectively recognized as a person under the law. The corporation may be a non profit
organization or a business. It is not affected by the death of any member. A sole trader is the most
simple structure of business. This structure is less expensive to set up because there are very few legal
and tax formalities. Operating your business as a sole trader means you trade on your own and control
and manage the business. In Private Limited Company there is a minimum two to a maximum of fifty
people, these people make financial contributions to their business and they have limited liability.

The Corporations Act 2001 and Australian Securities and Investments Commission Act 2001 are two
statutes. Traditionally, governance of corporate law has been viewed as a thing for State legislation.
However, in 1989 the Commonwealth government developed legislation that aimed to take over

Manifesto about Street Art
Art became an integral and most crucial thing in lives of most people. It helps people to represent their
feelings through their art works, whereas other people are using art in order to get profit. People are
learning arts in schools and universities and using it in their lives for different proposes. However, art
seems to be good for all people, there is only one type of it which is usually not welcomed in countries
Street art . According to Johan Slogan, Nowadays art (2010, 13 14), street art known to us as a graffiti

Passing painted streets I often wonder why most people think that graffiti is vandalism?
In my opinion, professionally made graffiti is very beautiful. Graffiti is very popular throughout the
world. If it s done by really talented person , the pattern may become a work of art. Let s start with the
fact that graffiti transforms abandoned buildings , fences , telephone booths . Drawings must be drawn
on an old , dirty and ruined walls. It would be nice if we could have a special place for graffiti. In
addition, graffiti artists want to be heard , and they are trying to explain something to people . Painting
a picture , artists express themselves . They want to decorate this gray and boring world . In addition ,
there are some famous unusual paintings that are made by the best artists . When people look at these
colorful pictures on the buildings , they think of something warm and good.
Of course sometimes artists go beyond, but almost every graffiti has a deep meaning, and more often
the picture on the wall is the best way to arrange protest. Or do you really think that strike is better
than draw on the walls?
Imagine a city where graffiti wasn t illegal, a city where everybody drew whatever they liked. Where
every street was awash with a million colours and little

The Story Of A Cottage
In a cottage far far away there lived a girl named June. June lived with her mother and father. Every
day, June and her mother would go out and find new flowers to look at and to see. June s mother s
favorite flower was a petal flower and the only place that had the petal flower was by the Witch s
house. Once in awhile June and her mother would go out and try to see the flower without getting
caught by the mean old Witch. While June and her mom went flower hunting her father would go out
and try to sell the different types of flowers that they picked.
One day, the mother was getting old and sadly died. June was only 15, but she had to keep finding
new flowers to keep her dad and her alive. Her mother was buried near the grassy field by ... Show

made them, that is why you can t find them anywhere else , The Witch explained. The Witch took
something out of her cabinet and threw it onto June. She threw a goat potion because all of a sudden
June turned into a goat. Why did everything turn so small? , cried June. You fool, said the Witch, you
have turned into a Goat, and you will be like that for the rest of your life if you can find three roses.
You have to tomorrow night to break the curse, but if you don t you will be a goat forever. June has
seen roses before. Roses were located on the way to the petal flowers, because she made her trip here

journey. The duck stopped in her path and repeted his saying, If you fix things, other things will be
fixed! Ramo I am on a very important journey. If I cant find three roses by tomorrow I will be stuck
like this forever, June cried. Can I join you? Ramo said. Sure , June commented.

Heredity and Sex Essay
Heredity and Sex
When analyzing the major accomplishments of the 20th century it is imperative to include the
achievements in biology, which have revolutionized our understanding of life s process and of disease.
Already in the second half of the 19th century implications to future progress in the biological world
were being made. Darwin had outlined the evolution in animal species, Mendel had discovered some
basic rules for inheritance, and Weissman and other embryologists were beginning to decipher how an
organism develops. (Britannica, 1) However there was one key element missing, how all these
advances were correlated? The important information that unified these three fields (heredity,
evolution, and development) came at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Internalist studies gained importance in the 1890 s to 1900 due to the success of German physiology
and experimental embryologists. And the years of 1905 1915 brought a stress of heredity, where
research was focused on chromosomes. (Masienschein, 458) Not one specific approach provided a full
account of sex determination, however with the convergence of different approaches a new approach
was manifested, which reshaped tradition of developmental study. (Maienschein, 458)
Thomas Hunt Morgan advocated the internalist developmental search for a theory of sex
determination and production. In 1903 he concluded that both male and females elements exist in all
kind of eggs and they are not predetermined as being either male or female. However his evidence
remained inconclusive as to whether the nucleus or cytoplasm provided the determining influence on
sex. (Maienschein, 467) Morgan acknowledge that there were two types of sex theories, the
morphological (preexistence of sex in germ cells) and physiological (individual physiological process
of development). Even in 1910 after receiving the Nobel Prize for research in sex limited inheritance,
Morgan remained declined to regard the chromosomes as responsible for determining development.
He thought they played a role, but could not see them as determinants. (467) Eventually, the internalist
set aside explicit concern about physiological

The economic rationale for the method of multiple valuation method is the law of one price, i.e.,
identical assets should sell for the same price. To compute the multiple valuation method we needed to
define the peer group first. Apple, IBM and HP are not suitable because of their bigger dimension
(market capitalization, Debt, Equity and Share price). Also, to be comparable, firms need to be similar
in terms of risk, profitability, and growth. Once the comparable companies were identified, the
multiples were computed and a comparison was established between the peer group s market
capitalization and share price and those of the target company (Sun). In this context, where a company
wants to acquire another, corporate executive are interested in assessing a target s total value,
reflecting both debt (we assumed net debt in this case) and equity. In this case, the enterprise value is a
better basis for the valuation. That way we used the EV/EBITDA ratio, which resulted in a
meaningless value as Sun s EBITDA is negative. EV/Sales ratio should then be used. In fact, the
EV/Sales ratio raised the firm s valuation to $16375,51 Million against its $6198,17 Million market
capitalization. We can also use the Price Earnings (P/E) ratio, which provides an indication of how
much investors are willing to pay for a company s earnings. To

Powwow Research Paper
I only remember going to one powwow in my life. It was several years ago when I was just a child at
the Cherokee National Holiday celebration. I have seen some other Native dancers at different events
but never formal powwows. I have always wanted to see more, but I have never had an opportunity to
see another one. So, when I saw I had an assignment where I was required to go to an American
Indian event, I knew I wanted to see another powwow. I looked on the Oklahoma Tourism website and
found the nearest one to where I live. It was the Restoring Harmony / Stand to Power Powwow at the
Westside YMCA in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I learned a lot about modern tribal initiatives dealing with

The regalia that the dancers were wearing was absolutely beautiful and the amount of craftsmanship
that some of them put in were awe inspiring. I watched several of the dance contests. The Tiny Tots
contest was so adorable and was great to see such young children actively participating in their
culture. Another favorite was what they called the Golden Age dancers, where community elders took
the stage. It meant so much to them, which was very profound. One of the older women looked very
similar to my grandmother and reminded me of her. The centerpiece of the entire celebration of when
the men s fancy dance contest occurred. These were people at the top of their craft dressed in beautiful
regalia. The realization that really struck me was just how modern a lot of the clothing and items were.
Some dancers wore noticeable machine made pieces; other wore bright neon colors that do not exist in
nature. I remember the powwow (probably a little over a decade ago), where most of clothing was
hand sewn and beaded. This change was something I did not expect, but comes with modernization of
any culture or tradition. Seeing how the dancers and the powwow itself have adapted to contemporary
times while also holding on to the essentials of their traditions was so fascinating to see

Fall Of Acre Mongols
Out of the Mongols, Christians, and Muslim, the most barbaric warriors would have to be the
Muslims. Examples that support this answer comes from the text The Fall of Acre. When the Muslims
would conquer a castle on their way to Acre, they would step over the enemies corpses while
marching and the city of Acre was burned within the walls. The Muslims couldn t break the Christians
at Acre so they made a truce between the crusaders and the Muslims slewed them into captivity in
Babylon. On one account of an Islamic historian he stated that a single one of the Muslim warriors
would enter a village or a quarter wherein were many people, and would continue to slay them one
after another, none daring to stretch forth his hand against this horseman.

A Futuristic World Where Legalized Murder Is Sanctioned, A...
In a futuristic world where legalized murder is sanctioned, a detective investigates the death of a
former member of a elite group of police.
STORY COMMENTS (on first 30 pages)
THE 11th COMMANDMENT is a sci fi, action thriller with some dark comedy. The first 30 pages
offer an imaginative and visionary future world. The tone blends serious situations with humor. There
s also a film noir style to the script, as well as some comic book like features.
The opening sets the tone, although the first four pages feel overly written and could be clearer. What
is clear is that the man is after something and/or something is after the man.
The introduction of Harry feels refreshing. He s a character that the audience comes to really like. He

The Cee Cee Boyd scenes feel very comic bookish, which doesn t flow well with the earlier tone.
Boyd presents as an exaggerated type character. The purpose of adding a subplot about code books
and evading earth is unclear in regards to how this fits with someone killing the elite group of police.
The idea of legalized killing makes for a strong concept. There s a lot that can be done within this
world that allows people to get permits to kill.
There are some other nice visuals such as the cross forming a shadow over the man s face.
There s no doubt that the major strength of the first 30 pages is the lead hero, Harry. He s a really
likable guy. There s something charming about him and cynical. He s smart and it s a lot of fun to
watch him put the clues at a crime scene together. He shares good chemistry with McEvoy. There are
also nice hints to his backstory that creates good conflict between Harry and the other detectives.
McEvoy is another intriguing characters. She s very likable too. The introduction of McEvoy is strong
and she shares good chemistry with Harry.
Her reasons for asking him on the case, however, are not convincing. She hasn t even started the
investigation, so why she would contact him now isn t clear.
Sabrina feels like she has potential to be a very intriguing character with a secret. She s a tough
waitress and it s fun to see her stick a fork into it.

Family vacations also could have changed my life as it allows for more family time, memories, and

you should never give up. Never giving up is important in sports as you can always come back and
win. In light of all my reasons I chose to play a full time summer sport, travel softball, instead of
going on family vacations.
The road I chose to not take was to go on family vacations in the summer. Had I gone on family
vacations I would have experienced more family time, created more memories, and had the adventures
of a lifetime with my family. Being able to experience more family time would allow me to make
more lasting memories with my grandparents. I could have made family memories with my relatives
which could last me lifetimes. The family adventures could have been memorable and possibly
sparked a new career interest.
My life could be very different had I made this choice. Possible changes could have been having more

Essay about Annexation Of Texas
Thesis: The nine years of Texas s independence were long and seemed to be dragged out. Were those
nine years unnecessary and could it have been done in a shorter period of time?
13 October 1834 was the first revolutionary meeting of the American citizens who d settled in Mexico,
in the area soon to be known as Texas. The people attempted a movement that soon was laid to rest by
the Mexican Congress. Attempts at independence were silenced for the time being and the elections of
1835 proceeded forward. With Santa Anna moving to control Mexico, and taxes increasing, Texans
grew restless and rowdy.

The declaration made it clear that Santa Anna felt that any American who lived in texas had
overstepped Mexican authority, and needed to be punished. Word was sent to San Felipe to the
chairman of the Committee of Safety Stephen Austin, who in turn sent word to the volunteer
companies they had established that war was their only resource (SOS 2).
As these preparations occurred, the Mexicans pumped another 500 troops into the texas territory.
These troops marched for Bexar where they searched for artillery. The Texans mustered up a force of
168 men to attack the Mexican troops. On 1 October 1835 the Texans, led by elected Colonel John H.
Moore marched upon the troops with a six pound cannon and a set of smaller firearms. The Texans
emerged with a flawless victory from their battle with the Mexican troops, not losing a single man.
The Battle of Gonzales had just opened the war for the Independence of texas.
Finally, after a year of fighting and the battles of Goliad, Concepcion, and San Patricio Texans
declared independence from Mexico on 2 March 1836 (SOS). Expecting and hoping for the United
States to annex the new nation for hospitality in America, protection from the Mexican government,
and of course most of the Texans were American anyway.

Colors, Letters and Numbers Essay
Colors, Letters and Numbers. The three things that have been with us from infancy, to adolescence
until now. No one ever thought that the symbols that were on our building blocks would symbolize
what they do today. The movie Colors glorified bloods (red) and crips (blue) to some extent. It made a
lot of teens and younger kids want to be apart of a gang because it seems cool, or maybe they just had
nothing else better to do. The whole gang theme seems to be catching on through out all aspects of

We need our own brand of Genocide to combat these gangs and secure our future.
Before I could dive into the gang sub culture I had to ask the obvious question. What is a gang? A
gang is a group of people who want to be seen as different from others and want others to perceive
them as a distinct group. This group is organized, has leadership, and is committing criminal acts in
the community. Gangs have been in existence for as long as there have been inhabitants of this world.
Even the word Thug dates back to India in 1200 Ad as a word they used to describe a gang of
criminals. In the United States we grew up with a different kind of thug, like pirates and gangsters,
therefore, gangs, undoubtedly, are not a new concept. For decades, these gangsters weren t thought of
as all that bad. In fact they may have been loved by the community, or the public as a whole. I feel this
is a major part of the reason why teens join gangs. The Media glorification of Al Capone and Lucky
Luciano made men like Elliot Ness seem like one of the bad guys. Being apart of something bigger
than them maybe also what attracts teens to gangs. Just the thought of being a part of something
bigger than them makes some teens salivate. Teens who come from houses where there might be an
adult with a drug problem or something of that nature are more prone to join a gang than someone
who lives with both parents in a somewhat normal home. The family aspect of the gang is almost like

Most People Find Themselves Getting Lost To Soothing Sounds
Most people find themselves getting lost to soothing sounds of music, both the melodies and lyrics are
able to take them to another world. A world of serenity and peace, a world where there is no longer
anything but the sweet sounds of a song. It s funny how something so trivial can possibly have such a
great effect on a person. They ignore the horrors around them as they are too busy focusing on how a
simple chain of notes and rhythms can be so beautiful regardless of what the song itself might be
about. In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, he writes a book centered around a time period rampant

With the use of third person, Zusak is also able to almost directly display how people are able to find
light in the darkest of places through others. The youngest kids were soothed by her voice, and
everyone else saw visions of the whistler running from the crime scene (381). Even when the
characters are faced with the danger of the air raids, Zusak uses this story of Leisel to show how
people rely on finding their own distraction within others in order to maintain calm and not expect the
worst. He is able to implement a beacon of light for very scared people that is incredibly effective.
Narrative point of view is pivotal in being able to identify just how there can always be something
hopeful and beautiful within any situation even if everything surrounding it is nothing but dark.
Symbolism is used in order to show the juxtaposition presented by the ideas of good and evil found
within mankind s nature. One instance of symbolism used by Zusak is stealing. Zusak uses the two
most youthful characters to display the act of thievery. In one particular moment it is Rudy who
decides to defect from Leisel and go on his own to try and steal something for some feeling of
retribution. It feels good, doesn t it? To steal something back (483). Through stealing, several of Zusak
s characters gain a new sense of control over their lives even when they are forced under the control of
other powers. For Zusak to use stealing, something traditionally

The Extinction of Pleistocene Mammals Essay
During the late Pleistocene, a mystery occurred in which large mammals went extinct in North
America while they survived in other parts of the world. Scientists studying the late Pleistocene
extinction provided a plethora of explanations, including overkill by humans, extraterrestrial events,
and climate changes (Faith and Surovell, 2009). However, there was no unified explanation that they
all agreed upon. Taking note of this, J. Tyler Faith and Todd A. Surovell conducted tests to discover
whether the extinction was a single event or a long term process. Their findings were important to
other scientists in the same field, as they served as a guideline for their explanations of catalysts of the

to form, they concluded that a large group of comets might have impacted the Earth, causing the
Pleistocene extinction (Kennett et. al, 2009). Although the research done on late Pleistocene
extinctions was extensive, the conclusions for these explanatory models contradicted one another.
Amid these conclusions, Faith and Surovell derived their question from the fact that one cannot
develop explanations for this phenomenon without knowing whether the extinction was a long term
process or a single event. They hypothesized that the extinction during the North American late
Pleistocene was a single event that occurred between 12,000 and 10,000 radiocarbon years B.P. (Faith
and Surovell, 2009).
In order to test their hypothesis, they created a statistical test. The statistical test used data of the
occurrences of the fossils of extinct Pleistocene mammals in layers of rock and terminal Pleistocene
radiocarbon dates for a given taxon, or taxon dates. These dates were all rated as reliable or of
intermediate reliability. They found a pattern in the data specific to North American Pleistocene
mammals: the last

Stereotypes And Self Image Issues
People define themselves by what others say about them. Means names get tossed around. People get
categorized by their looks. The standards of beauty have become very high. Kids learn to mend
themselves from the words but they hurt. Some never recover from those experiences. Other take it
with them and it creates bigger problems. Self image issues can arise. People are cruel, especially in
school with their peers. The administration and teachers write it off as normal. Kids are mean to each
other, but making someone so depressed that they don t want to go on is excessive. Often times people
tease each other about weight. In Brunswick High School some of the teachers make comments about
over weight kids. Students make comments about how girls

Figurative Language In The Chocolate War By Robert Cormier
In the novel The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, the characters are over exaggerated, to state a
clear point that this is not a normal story. The story does not follow a regular story line, but one that
Robert Cormier decides is fit in his mind and he over exaggerates it aswell for an effect to state his
point that, not every time you disturb the universe something good comes out.
Robert Cormier wanted the characters be different, he did not make them how others wanted, being
socially acceptable, he wrote the book how he thought it should have went in his mind, and doing so
he gave the readers some new to read not just the everyday novel. Cormier gives the reader many
examples of figurative language to express the real meaning of the story for example, Caroni watched
the chalk in Brother Leon s hands, the way the teacher pressed it, rolled it, his fingers like the legs of
spiders with a victim in their clutch. (90) In this quote Cormier gives a similar to exaggerate about
how Brother Leon was holding the chalk in his hands. It sends a powerful message to the reader that
Brother Leon is a horrible man, who had no mercy and he is seen by others as a powerful
administrator in the school using quid pro quo in his own evil type of way. Cormier also uses more
figurative language to give a specific emotion that Cormier was trying to express throughout his
novel, that not every time someone disturbs the universe something good comes out of it. What
happened with Renault was bad enough, but there was violence in the air. (209) This quote is the the
example that even though Renault did disturb the universe and did try to stop the chocolate sale, he
failed and something bad happened to him for trying. In the end Jerry s attempts to stop the chocolate
sales failed, and still there was still violence in the air meaning the enemy he tried to defeat was angry,
but still undefeated. And many readers dislike Cormiers way to end the book in a way that the hero
does not defeat the villain(s). Like Richard Peck said The young will understand the outcome. They
won t like it but they ll understand. (10) And this is exactly what Cormier had in mind when he was
writing the book, that the readers wouldn t like the ending, but

Hinduism, Christianity, And Islam
Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam are three very prominent religions in today s world. Although God
is an extremely significant figure in all three religions, each sect offers a unique approach in
describing God. Each faith has readings from sacred books that discuss their own individual beliefs on
how God s disciples should act in order to achieve eternal salvation. The Pillar of Edicts , written by
Ashoka, is a summary of the Hindu faith, which discusses the concept of dharma in relation to how
the Hindu people must live their daily lives. Additionally, the Bhagavad Gita, a very popular and
sacred text found in the Hindu church, establishes the Hindu concept of salvation and life after death.
In the holy bible, chapters five through seven in the book of Matthew presents fundamentals of the
Christian faith. The Quran, the most cherished text in Islam, is the revelation of God s word. It
explains what it means to follow God s commandments and constructs the Islamic philosophy. All
three religions discuss their unique approach on how to obtain eternal life through obeying God. The
Pillar of Edicts outlines the principle of dharma, which is basically the consciousness of right and
wrong behaviors. Ashoka, a warrior and emperor in India, inscribed the seven edicts on rocks and
pillars that have been discovered in India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. The first pillar proposed
by Ashoka proclaims that without a love for the Dhamma, this being the same as dharma ,

Mother Daughter Conflict In Everyday Use By Alice Walker
In Alice Walker s short story, Everyday Use , the mother daughter conflict theme is portrayed in the
entire story. The oldest daughter Dee constantly believes that she is better than then everyone else in
the family. This has caused a family feud about who gets the quilt. The quilt was very cherished
because it was a family heirloom. Dee has always had a lot of power over her family and she soon
finds out that it is going to end soon. The biggest problem lies between Mama and Dee. This is clearly
illustrated by Dee s selfish behavior, high standards, and her her ignorance about her family s heritage.
Dee s superiority stems from the fact that she sets high standards for Mama, which in turn causes
Mama to feel inferior to Dee. Dee demands Mama to act a certain way, which is reminiscent of a
television show. On TV mother and child embrace and smile in each other s faces. Sometimes the
mother and father weep, the child wraps them in her arms and leans across the table and tell how she
would have made it without her help (paragraph 3). This description is the polar oppositeness of how
Dee acts towards her mother; Mama is well aware of the fact that her own daughter will never
embrace her like the people in the TV shows. Another major flaw of Dee s is that she acts ashamed of
both Mama and her family s background. Dee s impossibly high standards drive the ones who should
be closest to her, her family, away. She is constantly nagging and is persistent at finding things she
thinks need to be fixed, even going so far as being hypocritical about these various fixings. Mama says
she pins on my dress a large orchid, even though she has told me once that she thinks orchids are
tacky flowers (paragraph 4). Dee needs everything to be luxurious and elegant in her life. But even the
first glimpse of leg out of the car tells me it is Dee. Her feet were always near looking, as if God
himself had shaped them with a certain style (paragraph 19). As seen through this excerpt, Mama puts
Dee on a high pedestal and even relates her daughters foot to God. Dee s selfishness is also portrayed
through her verbal skills. She is often manipulating others through her speech and can talk her way
through just about anything. A

The, Atheists, Or Agonists
I find it interesting that for people who have no religious affiliation, or belief in God, form these
groups of nones , atheists, or agonists. What strikes me as interesting is that while they may not
believe or struggle to believe or support a particular faith or religion, they feel the need to form large
groups or organizations that defends their right not to believe. We all have our basic human rights and
freedoms to express ourselves as we see personally fit. So why do people feel the need to defend that
or even hide it? I found this article interesting for various reasons. It really did not surprise me to learn
that almost a quarter of the population in the United States makes up this group of nones. While that
may not seem like the majority of the population, I feel like that number will begin to climb as our
future generations grow up. I think for the longest time our culture and politics were based heavily on
religious influences for fear of backlash and disapproval from the general population. Today people
are encouraged to be open and to be themselves. We are encouraged to accept all people regardless of
their religion, color, sex, or even their sexual preference. I think because of these things, people no
longer feel like they have to hide their true identity for fear that their religious communities or even
the social community will not accept them. Maybe for these reasons people lost faith in the religious
community as well. Many of these beliefs

Colin Ferguson Research Paper
December 7, 1993, Colin Ferguson began to execute passengers randomly on a New York commuter
train (Who is Colin Ferguson, 2017). After killing six passengers and injuring nineteen others, he was
finally subdued by three of the other passengers (Who is Colin Ferguson, 2017).
Colin Ferguson was born January 14, 1959 in Kingston, Jamaica. His father Von Herman was the
managing director for Hercules Agencies, a large pharmaceutical company. Mr. Herman was highly
regarded and recognized as a prominent businessman in Jamaica (Montaldo, 2017). Ferguson had four
brothers and afforded the privileges that wealth offers in an extreme poverty area. He graduated from
Calabar High School in 1969 with a grade average that was ranked in the top third of his class
(Montaldo, 2017). In 1978 his father was killed in a car crash and a short time later his mother died
from cancer. He would then suffer the loss of the family fortune. At 23 years old Ferguson left
Kingston, Jamaica and moved to the U.S. on a Visitor s Visa (Montaldo, 2017). Jamaican culture is
different than American cultures. A study completed in 1997 concerning 225 Jamaican adults, it was
found that Jamaican men were considered coarse, reckless, aggressive, lazy, tough, arrogant, stern,
disorderly, robust, rigid, autocratic, courageous, and hard headed (Carpenter Walters, 2011). The only
job Ferguson could get were low paying and menial. He blamed racist Americans for this problem
(Montaldo, 2017). He got married to an American citizen who was also of Jamaican descent. They
soon moved to Long Island but Ferguson continued to be frustrated with reports of loss of temper and
outrage and racial bigotry toward white people who he felt stood in his way (Montaldo, 2017). In
Jamaica he was born into one of the top families in Kingston. Government and top military members
attended his father s funeral but in America he was not given this honor which appeared to cause him
to continue his hatred toward white people (Montaldo, 2017). His marriage did not last due to his
violent nature. Shortly after his divorce Ferguson was injured at work and he started attending Nassau
Community College with a strong academic performance. However, one

Stradbroke Island Case Study
Stradbroke Island s sandmining industry grew from modest beginnings where as early as 1948 hand
mining using shovels and trucks on the beach was established. Over numerous decades this soon
developed into present days use of large scale dredging. The establishment of aerial ropeways to
transport minerals for processing to Dunwich began in 1956 where the commencement of dredge
mining was initiated. Only a decade later, the concentrations of the rich black mineral being mined
were exhausted to the point that the miners moved their operations to the fore dunes. Whilst the
mining only caused minimal disruption to the environment, as the industry began to expand in the
1970s so did the impact on North Stradbroke s ecosystem. Sand mining company Consolidated Rutile
Limited (CRL) instigated dredge mining on Stradbroke s high dunes in 1979, this radically altered the
landscape of North Stradbroke Island (Sweet, C 2010). Another notable change in the history of sand

Michigan s Landforms
The shape of Michigan is something very unique to us. Anytime you look at a map of the Earth, you
can find Michigan in two seconds. If you re in the Upper Peninsula, you can point to exactly where
you are. Or if you want to tell someone where a city is located in Michigan, and you don t have a map,
you can just hold up your hand and point. For those of us born and raised in Michigan, it seems like a
completely normal thing to do. The shape of Michigan is really unique, with two separate peninsulas
to tell the story of how our state was shaped into the land we see today. Water has been the
predominant factor in shaping Michigan, starting with glaciers over ten million years ago, to rivers,
rain and lakes that still shape it today. Water ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These formations caused the water level in many lakes to drop, and flow into rivers. With the weight
of the glacier removed from the land, isotonic equilibrium occurred. The region began to rise, at a rate
of about thirty centimeters per century (Leelanau, 2004). Water levels in the upper basin began to rise,
forming lakes that filled the Michigan, Huron and Superior basins. Today, this isotonic rebound is still
occurring, but at a rate of 53 centimeters per century. The rebound occurs at different rates across the
area that was covered by the glacier. The difference in rates emerges from the difference in weight of
the glacier. Areas that are rising the fastest today are those that had a thicker or heavier glacial ice, or
those areas that had ice covering those most recently. Because of the difference in rates, the lower
basin rose more slowly that the northern outlets (Leelanau, 2004). As the water changed directions to
flow through the St. Clair River, the shape of the Great Lakes reached a point close to what they are at
today. The shorelines and water level has changed, but the basic flow of water has stayed the same for

The Anxiety Of Incest In The Nineteenth Century
Hatib Kadir
Connoly defines Incest as a marriage with their near consanguinity. Incest was widely practiced up to
the nineteenth century. He explores the anxiety of Incest from two perspectives, phonology and
physiology approach. But I got an impression that his presentation was more exploring on the latter
one. One of the anxieties that came from the incest was about genetic disease. The arrival of new
asylum, such as prison and hospital, and the professionalization medical and science became the key
roles in prohibiting the incest. The anxiety toward incest was more because of the physiological
reasons, rather than the abstract philosophical theories. The bad effect of incest is observable. In the
domain of the progressive science, scientists proved the detrimental effects of incest. On the other
hand, people also believe that Incest will exaggerate the bad side and the peculiarity of the family for
their next generation. People not only afraid of infectious disease but also hereditary disease. The end
of the 19th century was also a moment where people started to think that reproduction was also an
issue. Thus, by prohibiting incest, people believed that they could reproduce a wealth family. ... Show

Upper Cost Of College Students
Most people in this world do not get to experience the privileges that the richest do. The average
person does not get to live in a mansion, or on the beach, or even eat at the fanciest five star
restaurants. If someone does not have enough money to buy something or go somewhere, he/she
simply cannot do it. Lehigh University, in itself, is an example of this. As a rather costly private
school, only students who can afford the annual tuition are able to attend. The price changes the
probability that students will attend it, decreasing interest from many of the potential applicants. Price,

This is made obvious by the incredibly high prices of the food and beverages located at this dining
hall, compared to those of the other two dining halls. At the other two dining halls, Rathbone and
Lower Cort, one meal swipe is equivalent to about $4.50 and that gets a student unlimited food. At
Upper Cort however, each food item has its own price, often each more than one meal swipe, therefore
ultimately costing two or even three times as much as a normal meal. For an average college student,
who is poor do to all of the costs and money spending opportunities around them at all times, this is a
luxury. Because most college students are limited on meal swipes by their individual meal plans, they
cannot afford this. The students who have more money though, the elite in this situation, are at the
advantage because they can enjoy the privilege of eating at the Upper Cort balcony, if they find it that
is. The fact that this does greatly increase a student s probability to enter the balcony is true, but it
does not mean that the student is guaranteed to enter the room itself. After all, it is tucked away in a
nook, as shown in Exhibit C, where only those with prior knowledge of it are likely to find it.This
means that the while being tucked away does not cause students to not come to it, it definitely
decreases the probability that any given individual will choose to dine there. Just as the location of the
balcony changes the probability that students will go there, the amount of money that the students
have also determines the probability that they will end up eating there. If someone has more money,
they would be more probable than an individual who lacks the funds to eat there, to dine

The Causes And Consequences Of Low Birth Weight
The Causes and Consequences of Low Birth Weight
Low Birth rate is defined by the World health Organization as a baby weighing under 2,499 grams or
less regardless of gestational age. (WHO) This is a Prominent issue in our world today because on
average 30 million low birth weight babies are born every year. There are many factors that can causes
low birth weight such as premature birth, substances that affect the mother s health, father s support,
stress, the mothers age and race, and insufficient prenatal care. Low birth weight is important to
prevent and treat because it can lead multiple life threatening consequences, some of which can
remain with the child for life.
Pre mature birth is the number one cause of low birth weight in the United States. A baby is
considered pre mature if they are delivered before the thirty seventh week of pregnancy. This occurs
when the mother goes into labor to early. This can become very dangerous for the baby because it had
less time to develop in the womb leading to developmental issues. Symptoms of premature birth
include a large head in comparison to the body size, respiratory distress, trouble maintaining body
heat, eye damage. There are three types of pre term are Extremely preterm a child born less than 28
weeks, very preterm born between 28 to 32 weeks, and moderate to late preterm born between 32 to
37 weeks.
There are many substances that an expecting mother can consume that can cause the child be born
with a low birth weight.

Educational Inequality in the U.S. Essay
The United States is a country based on equal opportunity; every citizen is to be given the same
chance as another to succeed. This includes the government providing the opportunity of equal
education to all children. All children are provided schools to attend. However, the quality of one
school compared to another is undoubtedly unfair. Former teacher John Kozol, when being transferred
to a new school, said, The shock from going from one of the poorest schools to one of the wealthiest
cannot be overstated (Kozol 2). The education gap between higher and lower income schools is
obvious: therefore, the United States is making the effort to provide an equal education with
questionable results. The United States has a shameful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The schools from poorer towns and cities do not have the financial assets available to them to hire the
kind of teachers that schools with more money have the capability to employ. The resources available
to an urban, lower income school are to be equal to those available to a suburban, higher income
school. Two schools in New York, one from a wealthy school district and one from a poor district,
were given computers. The State provided the same number of computers to each school, therefore
claiming to evenly supporting each school. However, the school with the poorer children had a larger
number of students; the nicer school had twice the number of computers in proportion to the number
of their students (Kozol 84). It seems that the biggest factor keeping the children of lower income
homes behind is the school funding available. The poorer school district does not have the money to
spend on the things a wealthier district may, but there is no real evidence that spending money makes
much difference in the outcome of a child s education. In many cases, family and background have a
greater influence on how well a child does in school (Kozol 176 77). Richard Kahlenberg, a member

Love Sonnets In Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 By William...
Sonnets written in Elizabethan England were usually after Petrarch s works. Petrarch was a man who
was in love with a girl name Laura de Noves. He wrote 366 poems about his love for this woman from
the year 1327 all the way until 1368. His works were very stereotypical love poems that included lines
like, She ruled in beauty o er this heart of mine, / A noble lady in a humble home, / And now her time
for heavenly bliss has come, / Tis I am mortal proved, and she divine. Petrarch wrote in such a way to
charm a woman, as did many other writers of his time. However, there is one writer who took a
different approach when writing about the woman he admired. This man considered on the greatest
writers in the English language; William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is a reverse portrayal of Petrarch s
ideas of a love sonnet and what it should be. Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is often also referred to as My
mistress eyes, which adds emphasis to the first line, My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun. As the
opening line, this makes readers aware of what they are about to encounter throughout the sonnet. In
this work Shakespeare is simply mocking the work of writers like Petrarch, and we as readers love it.
Metaphors making comparisons to nature are often used to show the beauty of something when
writing. William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130, makes the same comparisons, however he makes the
metaphors in favor of the natural features rather than his mistress. Shakespeare isn t being rude to his
mistress by doing so; he is taking things at face value and being blatantly honest. The sonnet has been
included below for easier comparison. Notice that each negative metaphor in the first part of the
sonnet takes up only one line, and does not rhyme. Later in the poem Shakespeare expands the
comparisons to two lines. This has multiple effects on the poem such as allowing it to expand. By

time travel Essay
For many years time travel was the stuff of science fiction. This was all just part of the world s
imagination until recently. Scientists now believe that the current laws of physics allow us to travel
though time. They believe that we can now travel back to see our founding fathers sign the declaration
of independence. We could travel to 2999 to witness the birth of the next new millennium. Such travel
would require a machine capable of withstanding great pressures and incredible amounts of speed.
The act of actually traveling though time is for the most part, agreed upon, but the implications of
such travel is not so decided upon. Many different theorists have different views of what could happen
and some go, as far as to say that if we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To get the other half we have to convert our thinking from moving though time to moving though
space time (Hewitt 213). When we move, we not only move through space, we move though time.
This is the idea of space time. If a person were to stand still, they would be moving only though time.
If they moved a little bit, they would be moving though space a little bit, but still mostly though time.
If one were to travel at the speed of light, what changes would they experience in time? The answer is
simple; they would be traveling through space, with no travel though time (Hewitt 214). They would
be as ageless as light, for light travels though space only (not time) and is timeless. gt; The frame of
reference of a photon, a particle of light, a trip across the universe would take no time at all (Hewitt
214).
To understand how traveling though time would work, we must first understand how time and space
can be stretched. Motion in space affects motion in time. Whenever we move through space, we to
some degree alter our rate of motion in time. This is known as time dilation, a stretching of time that
occurs ever so slightly for everyday speeds, but significantly for speeds approaching the speed of
light. If we were to attempt to travel to the nearest star, Alpha Centauri, which is 4 light years away,
even traveling at the speed of light would take 8 years round trip (Hewitt 228). The center of our
galaxies is something like 30000 light years away and at the speed of light

Installation Art And Its Impact On Art

Installation art is living art which makes it relevant in our daily lives. It can be seen on display in

The Impact Of Debussy s Influence On The Works Of Richard...
In 1888, Debussy traveled to Bayreuth, hearing Parsifal and Meistersinger there, followed by Tristan
the next year. His trips to Bayreuth mark the beginning of Debussy s intentional shift away from
Wagner. Wagner s domination of the French musical society occurred gradually over a period of about
forty years. Elaine Brody writes that in the 1840s the French regarded Wagner as a madman; by the
1880s they had placed him on a pedestal. Debussy himself was became swept up in the fervor of
Wagnerism. While the Debussy heard Wagner s Tristan while in Rome, it was Parsifal that had the
biggest impact on the French composer. But despite the overwhelming support for Wagner s music,
Debussy returned from Bayreuth feeling that he needed to free himself from the German s influence;
he wanted to to develop a style that was characteristically French and free of German influences. ...

After returning from Rome, Debussy began frequenting bistros, literary cafes, and attended gatherings
at Edmond Bailly s shop of rare books, where he read books exposing him to religious symbolism.
Through his newly acquired connections, he was invited to attend Staphane Mallarmé s Tuesday
evening salon. At these events, he participated in discussions of literature, art, music, and heard many
works by Mallarmé and other Symbolists. Mallarmé s notion of of the arabesque is something that
Debussy latched onto. Barbara Kelly described Debussy s concept of arabesque as an undulating
melodic line, independent of any notion of development of themes...subject to varied repetition. This
is a concept that would prevail through Debussy s mature compositional

June Boyce-Tillman s Hildegard Network
Life: Hildegard of Bingen, who lived from 1098 to 1179, was the tenth child of a noble couple who
promised her to the service of the church as a tithe. At eight years old, Hildegard entered into the
Benedictine monastery at Mount St. Disibode to start her formal education. Raised by a religious
recluse, Hildegard lived in a stone cell with a single window and took her vows at the age of fourteen.
As a child, Hildegard experienced vivid visions, which she kept hidden throughout her childhood.
However, these visions intensified later in life and she was reportedly able to foretell the future. At age
eighteen, Hildegard took her vows to become a nun. After the death of her teacher, Hildegard became
the head of the community at twenty years old. Around the year 1150, she founded her own convent in
Rupertsberg, Germany on the Rhine River near Bingen. At age forty two, Hildegard experienced the
mystical vision that transformed her life. After falling ill, she began to record a detailed recount of the
vision in her manuscript entitled Scivias, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

perception of offshore oil drilling. Five million barrels of oil over a three month period flooded the

Role Of Pharmacy In Pharmacy
Pharmacy as a profession plays a very important part in the overall wellbeing of a patient. This is an
occupation that deals with the administration and pharmacology of medications. A pharmacist is part
of the team that ensures that a patient is nursed to full health, thereby improving the quality of life. I
was twelve years old when I decided that whatever occupation I end up doing, I will be positively
impacting the health of people. I made this decision one summer after school just let out when I got
inflicted with typhoid. I was very upset not just because of the severe pain, but also because I couldn t
go out and play since the illness didn t seem to be dissipating even after a few days. It is common
practice in Nigeria for people to self medicate with drugs like Paracetamol and Panadol. This is
because hospital bills are very expensive and treatment doesn t begin until payment is made.
Therefore, my mom administered these painkillers to me for the first couple of days although my
condition continued to worsen. Finally, we went to the hospital where I was diagnosed with typhoid
and directed to a pharmacist. A few days after taking the medications given to me by the pharmacist, I
started feeling better. This just goes to show that a doctor s job is incomplete without a pharmacist.
There have also been other instances where I have marveled at the wonder that is medicine. For
example, when my mom got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and it wasn t an issue so long as she

Situation: Lenovo is trying to smoothly enter the global market by leveraging the IBM acquisition.
Problem: To create a brand image and brand recognition before the IBM logo disappears from the

Lenovo used the IBM logo to ensure customers that ThinkPad would be in good care and provide
good service even with the changing ownership. Moreover, Lenovo moved away from IBM with the
objective of launching its own master brand with the help from ThinkPad sub brand. One example,

innovation not Lenovo in April 2005. Lenovo needed to develop itself as an innovative company.
Acquisition with the IBM helped Lenovo to move quickly in the international market. We would use
the IBM logo not only to go global but for the loyal customer base and flagship. Once the consumers
are convinced about Lenovo s capability as a brand and the reputation that will help to build the loyal
customer base for the new brand Lenovo. Slowly, Lenovo designed new products showing the
combination of innovation and efficiency The 3000 family . A 3000 number was chosen instead of a

Essay on James Joyce s Dubliners
Dubliners
James Joyce wrote the book Dubliners; Joyce expresses many different types of emotions throughout
the book. The emotions portray individuals in society, and light and dark. The emotions of individuals
are examined throughout the stories by other members in society. The stories that express the ideas
are: The Encounter, Eveline , and The Dead. The symbolism of individuals in society expresses many
different situations that are happening in the characters lives. The symbolism of light goes along with
the idea of feeling happy and enjoying life. The theme of dark shows the individuals fighting, and
having a negative outlook on life.

The story of Eveline shows the images of the girl s past being the image of dark, and her future the
image of light. The promise made between her and her mother holds her back from moving on with
her life. She feels that she is confused with leaving or staying. She remembered the last night of her
mother s illness; she was again in the close dark room at the other side of the hall and outside she
heard a melancholy air of Italy (33). The feeling of being portrayed of being lost between her past and
her future. She wants more, but doesn t want to go against her mothers wish. The story of Eveline
gives different perspectives of the society. The society plays a major factor in the roles of the
characters with the decisions they make. She feels parted from her family and the society puts a toll on
her feelings. In her home anyway she had shelter and food; she had those who she had known all her
life about her (30). The life she used to have is different than the life she wants to take with Frank.
Frank feels pressured to make the right decisions to make him look good in the society. Eveline
expresses how much the society has an impact on the individuals and how they interact with each
other.
The confusion of the Dead shows many different images of the themes of light and dark. The images
show the characters feelings at harsh,

This form tends to be used more in the Japanese forms than in U.S. The fact is that there are many
differences between U.S, and Japanese accounting practices as well as the management accounting
practices. Management accounting accounts for only one component of a company s total
management system and the role of that system cannot be completely understood without considering
the organizational context and the goals that are to be achieved.
United States companies such as Ford Motor Company tend to put more emphasis on manufacturing
costs after the fact. The Japanese tend to stress the proactive use of managerial accounting to promote
the success and innovation of the products that are introduced. The accounting system used by the two
is similar in some ways and differ in many others. The key area where they tend to come together is
the bottom line which is where the final numbers are clear. Some feel as though to further shed light
on how U.S. and Japanese companies differ, they must consider the goal, context and the process of
the accounting practices.
When visiting Toyota s website, the same flashy graphics are displayed as their American competitor s
website, Ford. Looking deeper for differences in generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
between Toyota and Ford, the financial results for both companies can be viewed online. The Ford

Breast Feeding Persuasive Speech
One issue I would like to change today is breast feeding. I think it should be normalized. Yes, women
today have many benefits, thanks to our ancestors but I think this is an important issue today for
several women. How is it fair that we have spots dedicated to smokers but don t have a place where a
woman can feel secure while acting on a natural habit such as breast feeding her infant? Society is full
of harsh hypocrites. It s ok for woman to be braless wearing a tight shirt with her nipples poking
through them but it s wrong for a woman to nurse her child? If it was up to me I would strike and

Sojourner was a formal slave who participated in both the abolition of slavery and the women s right

transformed into a legend. She was an impressive speaker, preacher, activist, and abolitionist. She is
well known for her Ain t I a women? speech that she gave at the women s convention in Akron, Ohio,

The Role of Women in Doyle´s A Scandal in Bohemia Essay
Doyle s A Scandal in Bohemia follows the story of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes on his
adventures to retrieve a disgraceful photograph of Irene Adler and the King of Bohemia. The king,
now engaged to a different woman, is fearful that Adler may use the photo as blackmail. In A Scandal
in Bohemia, the apparent role of women is minuscule. The only female emphasis is on one woman,
who is the object of Holmes detective inquiries. In A Scandal in Bohemia, society places women at a
subordinate level, pushing them to the background and therefore never allowing the reader to fully
understand their character. Watson describes women as second class citizens at the start of the story
without directly saying so. Watson comments: My own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The King also fears the revelation of the scandalous photograph simply because it lies in the hands of
a woman. His interests to dominate this woman, Irene Adler, are evident in the callous actions the
King directs towards her. The King states, Five attempts have been made. Twice burglars in my pay
ransacked her house. Once we diverted her luggage when she traveled. Twice she has been waylaid.
There has been no result (218). This disdain and oblivion towards Adler s privacy leads one to
reassess the King s motives. Is he actually interested in the photograph or do his actions focus solely
on hurting Irene Adler? The King wants the upper hand on this beautiful, yet extremely intelligent
woman. The King s attitude towards his future wife and his former lover, Irene Adler, fits into society
s narrowly defined roles of women. In British Victorian society, women were the nurtures and the
protectors of the children, and what some deemed as only monetarily valuable items. This female
instinct to nurture is one stereotype that is greatly reflected in the personality of Irene Adler. Adler s
willingness to help is a quality that Watson, as well as other men in society, felt all women should
possess. Watson acknowledges this nurturing tendency when he says, but I know that I never felt more
heartily ashamed of myself when I saw the beautiful creature against which I was conspiring, or the
grace and kindliness with which she

  • 2. Tet Turning Point Important congressional and media voices reacted with even greater skepticism toward administration claims that Tet constituted an unequivocal military triumph for the United States. The professional media correspondents basically did their job and reported the dramatic turn of events as it was happening. Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News World Report, the country s three leading weekly news magazines, characterized Tet as a major psychological setback for the United States. Cronkite s stark evaluation was a turning point in America s reaction to the Tet attacks, just as Tet marked a turning point in the U.S. experience in Vietnam. If I ve lost Cronkite, President Lyndon Johnson lamented, I ve lost middle America. Needless to say ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After early 1968 it was evident that the United States would not soon or successfully conclude its involvement in Indochina. The size and breadth of the attack were stunning enough, but the images coming out of South Vietnam in the early days added to the shock and impact of the Tet Offensive. Television reports showed the fighting on the embassy grounds, chaos in the streets of Saigon, the assassination of an NLF prisoner by a South Vietnamese general on a Saigon street, and pitched battles in other cities such as Hue, while the Associated Press reported an American officer in the village of Ben Tre stating that, we had to destroy it in order to save it. As Kathleen Turner, author of Lyndon B. Johnson s Dual War, writes, With Tet...the fighting was suddenly, inescapably, terrifyingly close to the Saigon based news teams. The proximity of the battle guaranteed extensive coverage by media institutions: it was easily accessible, and it was for many the first extended view of the enemy. Walter Cronkite on the first reports of Tet asking, What the hell is going? I thought we were winning the war! Tet dominated the news coverage on television, newspapers, and magazines as people followed the fighting in Saigon, Hue, and Khe Sanh and saw the destruction and dislocation that was occurring throughout ... • 3. Jeremy Bentham Principles Of Utilitarianism Jeremy Bentham was born in Houndsditch, London on 15 February 1748. He was the eldest son of Alicia Whitehorn, née Grove, who on 3 October 1745 had entered into he second marriage with Jeremiah Bentham, a successful practitioner in the Court of Chancery. Six further children were born, of whom only the youngest, Samuel, born in 1757, survived beyond infancy. Death was never far away and on 6 January 1759, when Jeremy was ten years old, he lost his mother. By 1755 he was considered robust enough to go to Westminster School. It was in 1769 that Bentham found a purpose for his life. All the pieces of the jigsaw suddenly came into place. His later reflections on this period of his life reveal an exposure to a very different literature from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bentham brought together various elements from these thinkers to construct his version of the principle of UTILITY. UTILITARIANISM: Jeremy Bentham was a leading theorist in Anglo American philosophy of law and one of the founders of utilitarianism. He developed this idea of a utility and a utilitarian calculus in the Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation (1781).In the beginning of that work Bentham wrote: Nature has placed mankind under the governance of two sovereign masters, pain and pleasure. It is for them alone to point out what we ought to do, as well as to determine what we shall do. On the one hand the standard of right and wrong, on the other the chain of causes and effects, are fastened to their throne. They govern us in all we do, in all we say, in all we think: every effort we can make to throw off our subjection, will serve but to demonstrate and confirm it. Bentham believed that pain and pleasure not only explain our actions but also help us define what is good and moral. He believed that this foundation could provide a basis for social, legal, and moral reform in society. To determine whether an action is moral you merely have to calculate the good ... Drawings must be drawn on an old , dirty and ruined walls. It would be nice if we could have a special place for graffiti. In addition, graffiti artists want to be heard , and they are trying to explain something to people . Painting a picture , artists express themselves . They want to decorate this gray and boring world . In addition , there are some famous unusual paintings that are made by the best artists . When people look at these colorful pictures on the buildings , they think of something warm and good. Of course sometimes artists go beyond, but almost every graffiti has a deep meaning, and more often the picture on the wall is the best way to arrange protest. Every day, June and her mother would go out and find new flowers to look at and to see. • 7. Heredity and Sex Essay Heredity and Sex When analyzing the major accomplishments of the 20th century it is imperative to include the achievements in biology, which have revolutionized our understanding of life s process and of disease. Already in the second half of the 19th century implications to future progress in the biological world were being made. Darwin had outlined the evolution in animal species, Mendel had discovered some basic rules for inheritance, and Weissman and other embryologists were beginning to decipher how an organism develops. (Britannica, 1) However there was one key element missing, how all these advances were correlated? The important information that unified these three fields (heredity, evolution, and development) came at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Internalist studies gained importance in the 1890 s to 1900 due to the success of German physiology and experimental embryologists. And the years of 1905 1915 brought a stress of heredity, where research was focused on chromosomes. (Masienschein, 458) Not one specific approach provided a full account of sex determination, however with the convergence of different approaches a new approach was manifested, which reshaped tradition of developmental study. (Maienschein, 458) Thomas Hunt Morgan advocated the internalist developmental search for a theory of sex determination and production. In 1903 he concluded that both male and females elements exist in all kind of eggs and they are not predetermined as being either male or female. However his evidence remained inconclusive as to whether the nucleus or cytoplasm provided the determining influence on sex. (Maienschein, 467) Morgan acknowledge that there were two types of sex theories, the morphological (preexistence of sex in germ cells) and physiological (individual physiological process of development). Even in 1910 after receiving the Nobel Prize for research in sex limited inheritance, Morgan remained declined to regard the chromosomes as responsible for determining development. He thought they played a role, but could not see them as determinants. (467) Eventually, the internalist set aside explicit concern about physiological ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The IT industry is extremely competitive and companies are always searching for new ideas and new ways to evolve to be constantly one step ahead of its competitors. The economic rationale for the method of multiple valuation method is the law of one price, i.e., identical assets should sell for the same price. To compute the multiple valuation method we needed to define the peer group first. Apple, IBM and HP are not suitable because of their bigger dimension (market capitalization, Debt, Equity and Share price). Also, to be comparable, firms need to be similar in terms of risk, profitability, and growth. Once the comparable companies were identified, the multiples were computed and a comparison was established between the peer group s market capitalization and share price and those of the target company (Sun). In this context, where a company wants to acquire another, corporate executive are interested in assessing a target s total value, reflecting both debt (we assumed net debt in this case) and equity. In this case, the enterprise value is a better basis for the valuation. That way we used the EV/EBITDA ratio, which resulted in a meaningless value as Sun s EBITDA is negative. EV/Sales ratio should then be used. In fact, the EV/Sales ratio raised the firm s valuation to $16375,51 Million against its $6198,17 Million market capitalization. We can also use the Price Earnings (P/E) ratio, which provides an indication of how much investors are willing to pay for a company s earnings. To ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I have seen some other Native dancers at different events but never formal powwows. I have always wanted to see more, but I have never had an opportunity to see another one. So, when I saw I had an assignment where I was required to go to an American Indian event, I knew I wanted to see another powwow. I looked on the Oklahoma Tourism website and found the nearest one to where I live. It was the Restoring Harmony / Stand to Power Powwow at the Westside YMCA in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I learned a lot about modern tribal initiatives dealing with health, culture, and intertribal relations. The 11th Annual Restoring ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The regalia that the dancers were wearing was absolutely beautiful and the amount of craftsmanship that some of them put in were awe inspiring. I watched several of the dance contests. The Tiny Tots contest was so adorable and was great to see such young children actively participating in their culture. Another favorite was what they called the Golden Age dancers, where community elders took the stage. It meant so much to them, which was very profound. One of the older women looked very similar to my grandmother and reminded me of her. The centerpiece of the entire celebration of when the men s fancy dance contest occurred. These were people at the top of their craft dressed in beautiful regalia. The realization that really struck me was just how modern a lot of the clothing and items were. Some dancers wore noticeable machine made pieces; other wore bright neon colors that do not exist in nature. I remember the powwow (probably a little over a decade ago), where most of clothing was hand sewn and beaded. This change was something I did not expect, but comes with modernization of any culture or tradition. Seeing how the dancers and the powwow itself have adapted to contemporary times while also holding on to the essentials of their traditions was so fascinating to see ... Examples that support this answer comes from the text The Fall of Acre. When the Muslims would conquer a castle on their way to Acre, they would step over the enemies corpses while marching and the city of Acre was burned within the walls. The Muslims couldn t break the Christians at Acre so they made a truce between the crusaders and the Muslims slewed them into captivity in Babylon. STORY COMMENTS (on first 30 pages) THE 11th COMMANDMENT is a sci fi, action thriller with some dark comedy. The first 30 pages offer an imaginative and visionary future world. The tone blends serious situations with humor. There s also a film noir style to the script, as well as some comic book like features. The idea of legalized killing makes for a strong concept. There s a lot that can be done within this world that allows people to get permits to kill. There are some other nice visuals such as the cross forming a shadow over the man s face. There s no doubt that the major strength of the first 30 pages is the lead hero, Harry. This group is organized, has leadership, and is committing criminal acts in the community. Gangs have been in existence for as long as there have been inhabitants of this world. Even the word Thug dates back to India in 1200 Ad as a word they used to describe a gang of criminals. Scientists studying the late Pleistocene extinction provided a plethora of explanations, including overkill by humans, extraterrestrial events, and climate changes (Faith and Surovell, 2009). However, there was no unified explanation that they all agreed upon. Taking note of this, J. Tyler Faith and Todd A. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some scientists have attributed the extinction to an extraterrestrial event. In 2009, another group of scientists found nanodiamonds in the sediment layer dating back to the Younger Dryas a period of glacial dewarming. Because these nanodiamonds needed conditions similar to that of cosmic impacts to form, they concluded that a large group of comets might have impacted the Earth, causing the Pleistocene extinction (Kennett et. al, 2009). Although the research done on late Pleistocene extinctions was extensive, the conclusions for these explanatory models contradicted one another. Amid these conclusions, Faith and Surovell derived their question from the fact that one cannot develop explanations for this phenomenon without knowing whether the extinction was a long term process or a single event. They hypothesized that the extinction during the North American late Pleistocene was a single event that occurred between 12,000 and 10,000 radiocarbon years B.P. (Faith and Surovell, 2009). In order to test their hypothesis, they created a statistical test. • 20. Figurative Language In The Chocolate War By Robert Cormier In the novel The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, the characters are over exaggerated, to state a clear point that this is not a normal story. The story does not follow a regular story line, but one that Robert Cormier decides is fit in his mind and he over exaggerates it aswell for an effect to state his point that, not every time you disturb the universe something good comes out. Robert Cormier wanted the characters be different, he did not make them how others wanted, being socially acceptable, he wrote the book how he thought it should have went in his mind, and doing so he gave the readers some new to read not just the everyday novel. Cormier gives the reader many examples of figurative language to express the real meaning of the story for example, Caroni watched the chalk in Brother Leon s hands, the way the teacher pressed it, rolled it, his fingers like the legs of spiders with a victim in their clutch. (90) In this quote Cormier gives a similar to exaggerate about how Brother Leon was holding the chalk in his hands. It sends a powerful message to the reader that Brother Leon is a horrible man, who had no mercy and he is seen by others as a powerful administrator in the school using quid pro quo in his own evil type of way. Cormier also uses more figurative language to give a specific emotion that Cormier was trying to express throughout his novel, that not every time someone disturbs the universe something good comes out of it. What happened with Renault was bad enough, but there was violence in the air. (209) This quote is the the example that even though Renault did disturb the universe and did try to stop the chocolate sale, he failed and something bad happened to him for trying. In the end Jerry s attempts to stop the chocolate sales failed, and still there was still violence in the air meaning the enemy he tried to defeat was angry, but still undefeated. And many readers dislike Cormiers way to end the book in a way that the hero does not defeat the villain(s). Like Richard Peck said The young will understand the outcome. They won t like it but they ll understand. (10) And this is exactly what Cormier had in mind when he was writing the book, that the readers wouldn t like the ending, but ... Although God is an extremely significant figure in all three religions, each sect offers a unique approach in describing God. Each faith has readings from sacred books that discuss their own individual beliefs on how God s disciples should act in order to achieve eternal salvation. The Pillar of Edicts , written by Ashoka, is a summary of the Hindu faith, which discusses the concept of dharma in relation to how the Hindu people must live their daily lives. Additionally, the Bhagavad Gita, a very popular and sacred text found in the Hindu church, establishes the Hindu concept of salvation and life after death. • 22. Mother Daughter Conflict In Everyday Use By Alice Walker In Alice Walker s short story, Everyday Use , the mother daughter conflict theme is portrayed in the entire story. The oldest daughter Dee constantly believes that she is better than then everyone else in the family. This has caused a family feud about who gets the quilt. The quilt was very cherished because it was a family heirloom. Dee has always had a lot of power over her family and she soon finds out that it is going to end soon. The biggest problem lies between Mama and Dee. This is clearly illustrated by Dee s selfish behavior, high standards, and her her ignorance about her family s heritage. Dee s superiority stems from the fact that she sets high standards for Mama, which in turn causes Mama to feel inferior to Dee. Dee demands Mama to act a certain way, which is reminiscent of a television show. On TV mother and child embrace and smile in each other s faces. Sometimes the mother and father weep, the child wraps them in her arms and leans across the table and tell how she would have made it without her help (paragraph 3). This description is the polar oppositeness of how Dee acts towards her mother; Mama is well aware of the fact that her own daughter will never embrace her like the people in the TV shows. Another major flaw of Dee s is that she acts ashamed of both Mama and her family s background. Dee s impossibly high standards drive the ones who should be closest to her, her family, away. She is constantly nagging and is persistent at finding things she thinks need to be fixed, even going so far as being hypocritical about these various fixings. Mama says she pins on my dress a large orchid, even though she has told me once that she thinks orchids are tacky flowers (paragraph 4). Dee needs everything to be luxurious and elegant in her life. But even the first glimpse of leg out of the car tells me it is Dee. Her feet were always near looking, as if God himself had shaped them with a certain style (paragraph 19). As seen through this excerpt, Mama puts Dee on a high pedestal and even relates her daughters foot to God. Dee s selfishness is also portrayed through her verbal skills. She is often manipulating others through her speech and can talk her way through just about anything. A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What strikes me as interesting is that while they may not believe or struggle to believe or support a particular faith or religion, they feel the need to form large groups or organizations that defends their right not to believe. We all have our basic human rights and freedoms to express ourselves as we see personally fit. So why do people feel the need to defend that or even hide it? I found this article interesting for various reasons. It really did not surprise me to learn that almost a quarter of the population in the United States makes up this group of nones. While that may not seem like the majority of the population, I feel like that number will begin to climb as our future generations grow up. I think for the longest time our culture and politics were based heavily on religious influences for fear of backlash and disapproval from the general population. Today people are encouraged to be open and to be themselves. We are encouraged to accept all people regardless of their religion, color, sex, or even their sexual preference. I think because of these things, people no longer feel like they have to hide their true identity for fear that their religious communities or even the social community will not accept them. • 31. Upper Cost Of College Students Most people in this world do not get to experience the privileges that the richest do. The average person does not get to live in a mansion, or on the beach, or even eat at the fanciest five star restaurants. If someone does not have enough money to buy something or go somewhere, he/she simply cannot do it. Lehigh University, in itself, is an example of this. As a rather costly private school, only students who can afford the annual tuition are able to attend. The price changes the probability that students will attend it, decreasing interest from many of the potential applicants. At the other two dining halls, Rathbone and Lower Cort, one meal swipe is equivalent to about $4.50 and that gets a student unlimited food. At Upper Cort however, each food item has its own price, often each more than one meal swipe, therefore ultimately costing two or even three times as much as a normal meal. For an average college student, who is poor do to all of the costs and money spending opportunities around them at all times, this is a luxury. Because most college students are limited on meal swipes by their individual meal plans, they cannot afford this. The students who have more money though, the elite in this situation, are at the advantage because they can enjoy the privilege of eating at the Upper Cort balcony, if they find it that is. The fact that this does greatly increase a student s probability to enter the balcony is true, but it does not mean that the student is guaranteed to enter the room itself. After all, it is tucked away in a nook, as shown in Exhibit C, where only those with prior knowledge of it are likely to find it.This means that the while being tucked away does not cause students to not come to it, it definitely decreases the probability that any given individual will choose to dine there. Just as the location of the balcony changes the probability that students will go there, the amount of money that the students have also determines the probability that they will end up eating there. • 35. Educational Inequality in the U.S. Essay The United States is a country based on equal opportunity; every citizen is to be given the same chance as another to succeed. This includes the government providing the opportunity of equal education to all children. All children are provided schools to attend. However, the quality of one school compared to another is undoubtedly unfair. Former teacher John Kozol, when being transferred to a new school, said, The shock from going from one of the poorest schools to one of the wealthiest cannot be overstated (Kozol 2). The education gap between higher and lower income schools is obvious: therefore, the United States is making the effort to provide an equal education with questionable results. The schools from poorer towns and cities do not have the financial assets available to them to hire the kind of teachers that schools with more money have the capability to employ. The resources available to an urban, lower income school are to be equal to those available to a suburban, higher income school. Two schools in New York, one from a wealthy school district and one from a poor district, were given computers. The State provided the same number of computers to each school, therefore claiming to evenly supporting each school. However, the school with the poorer children had a larger number of students; the nicer school had twice the number of computers in proportion to the number of their students (Kozol 84). It seems that the biggest factor keeping the children of lower income homes behind is the school funding available. The poorer school district does not have the money to spend on the things a wealthier district may, but there is no real evidence that spending money makes much difference in the outcome of a child s education. In many cases, family and background have a greater influence on how well a child does in school (Kozol 176 77). • 36. Love Sonnets In Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 By William... Sonnets written in Elizabethan England were usually after Petrarch s works. Petrarch was a man who was in love with a girl name Laura de Noves. He wrote 366 poems about his love for this woman from the year 1327 all the way until 1368. His works were very stereotypical love poems that included lines like, She ruled in beauty o er this heart of mine, / A noble lady in a humble home, / And now her time for heavenly bliss has come, / Tis I am mortal proved, and she divine. Petrarch wrote in such a way to charm a woman, as did many other writers of his time. However, there is one writer who took a different approach when writing about the woman he admired. This man considered on the greatest writers in the English language; William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is a reverse portrayal of Petrarch s ideas of a love sonnet and what it should be. Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is often also referred to as My mistress eyes, which adds emphasis to the first line, My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun. As the opening line, this makes readers aware of what they are about to encounter throughout the sonnet. In this work Shakespeare is simply mocking the work of writers like Petrarch, and we as readers love it. Metaphors making comparisons to nature are often used to show the beauty of something when writing. William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130, makes the same comparisons, however he makes the metaphors in favor of the natural features rather than his mistress. Shakespeare isn t being rude to his mistress by doing so; he is taking things at face value and being blatantly honest. The sonnet has been included below for easier comparison. Notice that each negative metaphor in the first part of the sonnet takes up only one line, and does not rhyme. Later in the poem Shakespeare expands the comparisons to two lines. This has multiple effects on the poem such as allowing it to expand. By allowing expansion, the sonnet is prevented from being stagnant. Although Shakespeare was mocking other writer s forms of love poems, I feel that he had a much deeper and more meaningful purpose to his sardonic writing. Shakespeare wanted to show that women can be beautiful without having cheeks as red as rose, or eyes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If they moved a little bit, they would be moving though space a little bit, but still mostly though time. If one were to travel at the speed of light, what changes would they experience in time? The answer is simple; they would be traveling through space, with no travel though time (Hewitt 214). Whenever we move through space, we to some degree alter our rate of motion in time. This is known as time dilation, a stretching of time that occurs ever so slightly for everyday speeds, but significantly for speeds approaching the speed of light.
