TGS, in cooperation with St. Petersburg State University and other
Russian academic entities, is pleased to announce the completion of the
first phase of the project.
Geology and Hydrocarbon Systems of the East Russian
Arctic Offshore
The East Russian Arctic shelf, including Laptev, East Siberian and
Chukchi Seas, contains a number of significant sedimentary basins and
represents some of the most promising offshore areas for hydrocarbon
discoveries. Nevertheless, due to the absence of offshore wells, only a
sparse grid of seismic lines and very limited information on the adjacent
land masses, the regional geological structure remains uncertain.
The current evaluation and understanding of regional hydrocarbon
resources of the Laptev Sea and other Arctic areas will be greatly
increased by these comprehensive geological reports, especially when
used in conjunction with new seismic data being acquired by TGS in 2011.
The objective of the project is to obtain a better understanding of the
main characteristics of petroleum geology in the East Siberian
Arctic sedimentary basins. This has been achieved through a series
of regional geological field studies over coastal areas and islands,
followed by analytical works on collected samples, of which the coastal
Laptev Sea area is the first. This project will serve as a basis for future
assessments of the hydrocarbon potential of the Siberian Arctic shelf.
In addition, the samples will provide an invaluable database for future
analysis as exploration progresses.

Petroleum Geology of the Offshore Sedimentary Basins:
ƒƒ Provenance and supply paths for basins’ clastic infill
ƒƒ Rocks composition and depositional environments
ƒƒ Sedimentary processes
ƒƒ Post-sedimentary (diagenetic) processes
ƒƒ Source rocks composition and nature
ƒƒ Distribution of source, reservoir and seal
ƒƒ Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic hydrocarbon systems
and play elements

Basic Approach to the Project
Fieldwork
A number of field studies have been carried out
over several field seasons to collect new data
and rock samples relevant to deciphering the
petroleum geology of the offshore sedimentary
basins. These studies will provide new and
unique information, as the field work will
be carried out in areas which are hardly
accessible.
Laboratory Studies of Samples
Laboratory studies of samples, using current
state-of-the-art techniques and technology,
have been a key part of the project and are a
significant improvement on previous studies in
the East Arctic.

ƒƒ Maturation, chemical and isotopic composition of the organic
matter
ƒƒ Reservoir and seal quality
ƒƒ Thermal evolution of the rocks and provenance study
ƒƒ Study of depositional environments and dating of events
ƒƒ Tectonic/structural evolution and dating of events
Analytical Methods:
ƒƒ Thin/polish section and mineralogical studies
ƒƒ Clay minerals study
ƒƒ Rock evaluation and vitrinite studies
ƒƒ Chemical study (organic and non-organic matter)
ƒƒ Isotopic study (organic and non-organic matter)
ƒƒ (U-Th)/He and/or fission track study
ƒƒ U-Pb detrital zircon dating

Phase I: Laptev Sea Coastal Areas Fieldwork
Lena-Anabar-Khatanga-Taimyr Coastal Areas: the Key to Petroleum
Geology of the Laptev Sea Shelf
The main objective behind the Laptev Sea coastal margin field traverses
is to enhance the knowledge of the area by applying new ideas and
laboratory technologies that were not available 20 years ago when most
of the existing regional studies were carried out.
During the field seasons the Northernmost Siberian Craton, Easternmost
Enisey-Khatanga, Westernmost Anabar-Lena Depressions and Olenek
fold zone have been studied.
Field Projects
ƒƒ Khatanga (1A) area: Palaeozoic to Mesozoic rocks units
ƒƒ Olenek (1B) area: Neoproterozoic to Mesozoic rock units
ƒƒ Lena River (1C) area: Mesozoic and Cenozoic successions
ƒƒ Anabar River and Enisey-Khatanga wells (1D) area
Mesoproterozoic to Mesozoic successions
A total of over 1,000 samples have been collected for further
laboratory studies.

EAST RUSSIAN ARCTIC TGS, in cooperation with St. Petersburg State University and other Russian academic entities, is pleased to announce the completion of the first phase of the project. Geology and Hydrocarbon Systems of the East Russian Arctic Offshore The East Russian Arctic shelf, including Laptev, East Siberian and Chukchi Seas, contains a number of significant sedimentary basins and represents some of the most promising offshore areas for hydrocarbon discoveries. Nevertheless, due to the absence of offshore wells, only a sparse grid of seismic lines and very limited information on the adjacent land masses, the regional geological structure remains uncertain. The current evaluation and understanding of regional hydrocarbon resources of the Laptev Sea and other Arctic areas will be greatly increased by these comprehensive geological reports, especially when used in conjunction with new seismic data being acquired by TGS in 2011. The objective of the project is to obtain a better understanding of the main characteristics of petroleum geology in the East Siberian Arctic sedimentary basins. This has been achieved through a series of regional geological field studies over coastal areas and islands, followed by analytical works on collected samples, of which the coastal Laptev Sea area is the first. This project will serve as a basis for future assessments of the hydrocarbon potential of the Siberian Arctic shelf. In addition, the samples will provide an invaluable database for future analysis as exploration progresses. Main Project Objectives Tectonic Evolution of the Offshore Sedimentary Basins: ƒƒ Structural styles ƒƒ Timing of tectonic/magmatic events ƒƒ Erosion/Uplift/Cooling history ƒƒ Plate tectonic restorations Petroleum Geology of the Offshore Sedimentary Basins: ƒƒ Provenance and supply paths for basins’ clastic infill ƒƒ Rocks composition and depositional environments ƒƒ Sedimentary processes ƒƒ Post-sedimentary (diagenetic) processes ƒƒ Source rocks composition and nature ƒƒ Distribution of source, reservoir and seal ƒƒ Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic hydrocarbon systems and play elements Main sedimentary basins of Eastern Russian Arctic Basic Approach to the Project Fieldwork A number of field studies have been carried out over several field seasons to collect new data and rock samples relevant to deciphering the petroleum geology of the offshore sedimentary basins. These studies will provide new and unique information, as the field work will be carried out in areas which are hardly accessible. Laboratory Studies of Samples Laboratory studies of samples, using current state-of-the-art techniques and technology, have been a key part of the project and are a significant improvement on previous studies in the East Arctic. EAST RUSSIAN ARCTIC Phase I: Laptev Sea Coastal Areas Fieldwork Lena-Anabar-Khatanga-Taimyr Coastal Areas: the Key to Petroleum Geology of the Laptev Sea Shelf The main objective behind the Laptev Sea coastal margin field traverses is to enhance the knowledge of the area by applying new ideas and laboratory technologies that were not available 20 years ago when most of the existing regional studies were carried out. During the field seasons the Northernmost Siberian Craton, Easternmost Enisey-Khatanga, Westernmost Anabar-Lena Depressions and Olenek fold zone have been studied. Field Projects ƒƒ Khatanga (1A) area: Palaeozoic to Mesozoic rocks units ƒƒ Olenek (1B) area: Neoproterozoic to Mesozoic rock units ƒƒ Lena River (1C) area: Mesozoic and Cenozoic successions ƒƒ Anabar River and Enisey-Khatanga wells (1D) area Mesoproterozoic to Mesozoic successions A total of over 1,000 samples have been collected for further laboratory studies.
