Russian Well Database
TGS has been building an extensive database of digital well log data and associated well and
seismic information throughout Russia for many years. These data have been acquired from a
variety of verified sources and are now available to clients worldwide as individual wells, multi-
well purchases or commitments over extended contract periods.
Deliverables
For each well TGS will typically deliver a ‘well package’ comprising:
1. Images- Scanned images, where available, of all original
logs and occasionally reports. These images are typically
scanned at 300 dpi, rectified, de-speckled and cleaned up to
enhance the quality and delivered as black and white TIFF files.
2. Standard LAS – TGS creates from the images or from existing
digital files a standard log suite comprising, where available,
GR, SP, Neutron, Density, Resistivity, Sonic, Tension, Caliper,
Temperature and other standard Russian style wireline logs.
Where multiple runs of the same log type are available these
are spliced to create a single log run. These data are validated
against the images, where available, for quality assurance and
output as standard LAS 2.0 files.
Where images are unavailable TGS uses its extensive
knowledge of the region and familiarity with the data to
visually QC and verify the logs. However, despite using its
best endeavors, TGS is unable to warrant or provide any
guarantees regarding the quality of these data where its
normal validation techniques are not possible.
3. LAS+ - The Standard LAS product above is then further
processed to provide a high quality, fit for purpose, ready to
use, interpretation ready dataset, referred to as LAS+.
These data are typically depth-matched and edited to remove
cased-hole and bad-hole sections and to generally improve
the quality of the data. All GR curves will be converted
to pseudo-API units for a more familiar comparison with
Western Style logging, all header data will be captured and
translated into English and a Western Style Verification plot
created in PDF. All edits, depth-shifts and corrections are
recorded as comments in the header data. All available log
header information captured and translated.

Data Sets
Digital Well Logs
TGS has accumulated an unparalleled commercial library of
approximately 24,000 wells covering all of the major basins in
Russia and typically supplied as a well package comprising
images, standard LAS and LAS+ data as described above. A large
proportion of this library relates to the prolific West Siberia
basin where TGS has digital curve data for over 21,000 wells.
Digital Databases
In addition to the digital curve data above, TGS has acquired
the exclusive rights to market two databases of Russian well
data comprising information on approximately 55,000 and
50,000 wells respectively plus seismic navigation and license
block records. See Appendix 2 for a detailed list of the data
available and described below.
Miscellaneous
TGS is continually supplementing its database with images,
reports, maps and other material as well as additional well logs
and digital log data. In addition to the well logs, TGS is also
offering packages of scanned material grouped by field, basin
and region for over 400 items. Through brokerage agreements
with various institutes and organizations, TGS is able to offer
a wide range of regional studies and reports, often including
large amounts of well and seismic data.
General Russia Database
This database comprises a single table with 55,795 well records
covering Russia and the Former Soviet Union countries. The
table definition includes field name, well number, latitude,
longitude, operator and owner, elevation, TD, well class,
status, result, formation, age and lithology at TD, spud date,
completion date, casing records, liner records, tested zones,
producing formation, age and lithology. However, not all of
these attributes are available for each well.
West Siberia Database
This database, covering West Siberia, is available as both MS
Access and ARC GIS versions, the latter enabling immediate
graphical and spatial querying of the data and overlaying of
the various datasets described in the Appendix 2 table. With
various attribute tables for approximately 52,600 wells, 2,400
seismic surveys and 1,200 licenses, this database is essential
for any company actively working the West Siberia area.
