WHAT IS SELF-ESTEEM?
• Self-esteem is a term in
psychology to reflect a person’s
overall evaluation or appraisal of
her or his own worth. (Wikipedia)
• In other words, it is how we see
ourselves. It is a collection of our
self-beliefs or feelings.
HOW DO WE GET SELF-ESTEEM?
• Self-esteem is not something we
are born with
• It is something that we learn from
the environment we grow up in
• This includes our parents, peers
and everyone we connect with in
our community
CONCEPT OF SUCCESS
• Children learn this concept at a
very young age
• Children will try to roll over, fail, try
again, fail and keep trying until
they are successful
• When they finally succeed, they
feel good about themselves
• If we encourage them, this will
help build their self-esteem
A HEALTHY SELF-CONCEPT
In order to have a healthy self-concept,
children need:
• to feel love from parents and peers
• encouragement from parents and
peers
• to interact with others in a positive
way to create a positive self-concept
CHILDREN WITH LOW ESTEEM
• Are critical of themselves
• Become withdrawn
• Are disappointed in themselves

• Use negative self-talk
